Induced seismicity has received a lot of attention in recent years. This new natural phenomenon appeared as a result of active human influence on nature. The phenomenon has been detected in places of natural gas and oil recovery, and geological storage of CO[subscript 2]. One of the main reasons for the observed seismic activity is associated with the adsorption-induced deformation of rocks. We present experimental data and a simple model describing adsorption-induced deformation using the example of the Berea sandstone. We suggest a simplified experiment for the undergraduate university laboratory.

Microseismicity in subsurface geologic environments, such as sandstone gas reservoirs, is expected in the presence of liquid or gas injection. Although difficult to predict, the potential for microseismic events is important to field-scale projects, such as geologic storage of CO2, whereby the gas is injected into natural sandstone formations. We conjecture that a primary factor causing microseismicity is the existence of metastable states in a granular porous medium and provide experimental evidence for its validity. External perturbation triggers abrupt relaxation events which, with a certain probability, can grow into macroscopic microseismic events. Here, the triggering perturbation is produced by cooling to a cryogenic temperature. As the "sensor" for the abrupt relaxation events, we use thin Al films deposited on the sandstone surface. We show that as the temperature is varied, the films' resistance exhibits sharp jumps, which we attribute to mechanical restructuring or microfractures in the fabric of the sandstone. We checked the superconducting characteristics of the Al thin films on the sandstone and found microwave-induced Shapiro steps on the voltage–current diagrams. Such quantized steps provide indications that the film is made of a network of nanobridges, which makes it even more sensitive to abrupt relaxation events occurring in the substrate, i.e., in the underlying sandstone. We fabricate nanolayer alumina capacitor and apply high electric fields, close to 1 GV m−1, to inject charges in the dielectric. Asymmetric charge distributions have been achieved due to the selectivity of the quantum tunneling process. Namely, the electrons near the Fermi level cannot tunnel intoregions near the cathode, where the total energy would be less than the potential energy. This mechanism exhibits a strong tendency to populate charge traps located near the anode, i.e. the regions where their potential energy is the lowest. Such spatially selective charging of the dielectric allows a permanent bulk charge storage in the dielectric layer, even if the capacitor plates are short-circuited, provided that the temperature is sufficiently low so that the conductivity of the dielectric is negligible. The stored charge can be recovered if the temperature is increased above ~250 K for the dielectric tested, i.e. Al2O3. In our experiments, the total charge stored in the dielectric was up to seven and a half times higher than the charge stored on the capacitor plates. Also, measurements of the breakdown voltage show that the breakdown electric field, i.e. the dielectric strength, is independent of the thickness of the dielectric. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report a superconducting kinetic inductance memory (SKIM) element, which can be controlled exclusively by the bias supercurrent, without involving magnetic fields and heating elements. The SKIM is nonvolatile memory. The device is made of two Nb Dayem bridges, and it can operate reliably up to 2.8 K. The achieved error rate is as low as one in 105 operations. A highly focused electron beam can be used to shape nanodevices. We demonstrate electron beam etching of nanoholes through multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) and niobium nanowires. Nanoholes, as small as ∼2.5 nm in diameter, can be reproducibly fabricated. This technique can also be used to fabricate constrictions and larger nanoholes in MWNTs. We argue that with some improvement, this technique might be used to pattern suspended graphene by the removal of targeted single atoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The maximum entropy production principle (MEPP) is a type of entropy optimization which demands that complex non-equilibrium systems should organize such that the rate of the entropy production ismaximized. Our take on this principle is that to prove or disprove the validity of theMEPP and to test the scope of its applicability, it is necessary to conduct experiments in which the entropy produced per unit time is measured with a high precision. Thus we study electric-field-induced self-assembly in suspensions of carbon nanotubes and realize precise measurements of the entropy production rate (EPR). As a strong voltage is applied the suspended nanotubes merge together into a conducting cloud which produces Joule heat and, correspondingly, produces entropy. We introduce two types of EPR, which have qualitatively different significance: global EPR (g-EPR) and the entropy production rate of the dissipative cloud itself (DC-EPR). The following results are obtained: (1) As the system reaches the maximum of the DC-EPR, it becomes stable because the applied voltage acts as a stabilizing thermodynamic potential; (2)We discover metastable states characterized by high, near-maximum values of the DC-EPR. Under certain conditions, such efficient entropy-producing regimes can only be achieved if the system is allowed to initially evolve under mildly non-equilibrium conditions, namely at a reduced voltage; (3) Without such a "training" period the system typically is not able to reach the allowed maximum of the DC-EPR if the bias is high; (4) We observe that the DC-EPR maximum is achieved within a time, Te, the evolution time, which scales as a power-law function of the applied voltage; (5) Finally, we present a clear example in which the g-EPR theoretical maximum can never be achieved. Yet, under a wide range of conditions, the system can self-organize and achieve a dissipative regime in which the DC-EPR equals its theoretical maximum. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article describes how nanotube chains decay and the entropy production drops to very low values if the noise exceeds certain threshold value through a simple theoretical model. The efficiency of conventional techniques used to harvest energy in nuclear reactors lies around 35%. This limit exists, because the nuclear energy is converted to electrical energy via heat engines. We study an alternative approach where the kinetic energy of nuclear reaction products is directly converted into electric energy in a stack of charged capacitors with a gap size of 500 nm and graphene electrodes. Graphene is expected to be chemically and mechanically stable in high-radiation environments, because its tensile strength of 130 GPa is very large, about 100 times larger than most metals. The dielectric strength of such nanocapacitors exceeds 1 GV/m, because avalanching is suppressed at small gap sizes. In a 1 GV/m electric field charged nuclear reaction products, such as 5.6 MeV alpha particles, come to rest in of a stack with 5000 nanocapacitors. We show that during the deceleration process more than 90% of kinetic energy of charged nuclear reaction products is converted to electric energy and stored as electric energy in the stack. Each stack is 2.5-mm thick and produces a high-voltage DC current. A device with a 1-Ci241Am source is expected to generate 22 mW of electric power. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phase slips are topological fluctuations that carry the superconducting order-parameter field between distinct current-carrying states. Owing to these phase slips, superconducting nanowires acquire electrical resistance. In such wires, it is well known that at higher temperatures phase slips occur through the process of thermal barrier-crossing by the order-parameter field. At low temperatures, the general expectation is that phase slips should proceed through quantum tunnelling events, which are known as quantum phase slips. However, resistive measurements have produced evidence both for and against the occurrence of quantum phase slips. Here, we report evidence for the observation of individual quantum phase-slip events in homogeneous ultranarrow wires at high bias currents. We accomplish this through measurements of the distribution of switching currents for which the width exhibits a rather counter-intuitive, monotonic increase with decreasing temperature. Importantly, measurements show that in nanowires with larger critical currents, quantum fluctuations dominate thermal fluctuations up to higher temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A thin-film Fabry-Perot superconducting resonator is used to reveal the Little and Parks (LP) effect [Phys. Rev. Lett. 9, 9 (1962)], even at temperatures much lower than the critical temperature. A pair of parallel nanowires is incorporated into the resonator at the point of the supercurrent antinode. As the magnetic field is ramped, Meissner currents develop, changing the resonance frequency of the resonator. The LP oscillation is revealed as a periodic set of distorted parabolas observed in the transmission of the resonator and corresponds to the states of the wire loop having different vorticities. The effect of dielectric friction on the rate of charge separation in type II ZnSe/CdS semiconductor nanorods has been investigated using picosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The spatial separation of an excited electron-hole pair was estimated from the redshift in band edge absorption corresponding to the decrease in the exciton binding energy. The present study identifies a considerable effect of the solvent polarity on the rate of charge separation in semiconductor heterostructures, which should be taken into account when selecting nanorod caging media, such as solvents or polymer matrices. We perform measurements of the switching current distributions of three w ≈ 120 nm wide, 4 nm thick NbN superconducting strips which are used for single-photon detectors. These strips are much wider than the diameter of the vortex cores, so they are classified as quasi-two-dimensional (quasi-2D). We discover evidence of macroscopic quantum tunneling by observing the saturation of the standard deviation of the switching distributions at temperatures around 2 K. We analyze our results using the Kurkijärvi-Garg model and find that the escape temperature also saturates at low temperatures, confirming that at sufficiently low temperatures, macroscopic quantum tunneling is possible in quasi-2D strips and can contribute to dark counts observed in single photon detectors. At the highest temperatures the system enters a multiple phase-slip regime. In this range single phase-slips are unable to produce dark counts and the fluctuations in the switching current are reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Room-temperature quasi-ballistic electron transport in double-wall carbon nanotubes (DWNT) is demonstrated. Conductance dependence on the length was measured by submerging DWNTs into liquid mercury. The conductance plots show plateaus, indicating weak dependence of the electrode–tube–electrode electrical resistance on the length of the connecting nanotube. We infer a mean free path between 0.6 and 10 μm for ∼80% of the DWNTs, which is in good agreement with calculations based on the electron scattering by acoustic phonons and by disorder. We present a study of superconducting nanowires shunted with an external resistor, geared towards understanding and controlling coherence and dissipation in nanowires. The dynamics is probed by measuring the evolution of the V-I characteristics and the distributions of switching and retrapping currents upon varying the shunt resistor and temperature. Theoretical analysis of the experiments indicates that as the value of the shunt resistance is decreased, the dynamics turns more coherent, presumably due to stabilization of phase-slip centers in the wire, and furthermore the switching current approaches the Bardeen's prediction for equilibrium depairing current. By a detailed comparison between theory and experiment, we make headway into identifying regimes in which the quasi-one-dimensional wire can effectively be described by a zero-dimensional circuit model analogous to the resistively and capacitively shunted Josephson junction model of Stewart and McCumber. We report on observations of a superconductor-normal pulsing regime in microwave (GHz) coplanar waveguide resonators consisting of superconducting MoGe films interrupted by a gap that is bridged by one or more suspended superconducting nanowires. This regime, which involves MHz-frequency oscillations in the amplitude of the supercurrent in the resonator, is achieved when the steady-state amplitude of the current in the driven resonator exceeds the critical current of the nanowires. Thus we are able to determine the temperature dependence of the critical current, which agrees well with the corresponding Bardeen formula. The pulsing regime manifests itself as an apparent "crater" on top of the fundamental Lorentzian peak of the resonator. Once the pulsing regime is achieved at a fixed drive power, however, it remains stable for a range of drive frequencies corresponding to subcritical steady-state currents in the resonator. We develop a phenomenological model of resonator-nanowire systems from which we are able to obtain a quantitative description of the amplitude oscillations and also, inter alia, to investigate thermal relaxation processes in superconducting nanowires. For the case of resonators comprising two parallel nanowires and subject to an external magnetic field, we find field-driven oscillations of the onset power for the amplitude oscillations, as well as the occurrence (for values of the magnetic field that strongly frustrate the nanowires) of a distinct steady state in which the pulsing is replaced by stochastic amplitude fluctuations. We conclude by giving a brief discussion of how circuit-quantum electrodynamics-based systems have the potential to facilitate nondestructive measurements of the current-phase relationship of superconducting nanowires and, hence, of the rate at which quantum phase slips take place in superconducting nanowires. Abstract: We report measurements of magnetoresistance in bilayer graphene as a function of gate voltage (carrier density) and temperature. We examine multiple contributions to the magnetoresistance, including those of weak localization (WL), universal conductance fluctuations (UCF), and inhomogeneous charge transport. A clear WL signal is evident at all measured gate voltages (in the hole doped regime) and temperature ranges (from 0.25 to 4.3K), and the phase coherence length extracted from the WL data does not saturate at low temperatures. The WL data is fit to demonstrate that the electron–electron Nyquist scattering is the major source of phase decoherence. A decrease in UCF amplitude with increase in gate voltage and temperature is shown to be consistent with a corresponding decrease in the phase coherence length. In addition, a weak positive magnetoresistance at higher magnetic fields is observed, and attributed to inhomogeneous charge transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report experiments on quantum dot single-electron-tunneling (SET) transistors made from short multiwall nanotubes and threaded by magnetic flux. Such systems allow us to probe the electronic energy spectrum of the nanotube and its dependence on the magnetic field. Evidence is provided for the interconversion between gapped (semiconducting) and ungapped (metallic) states. Our tubes exhibit h/e-period magnetic flux dependence, in agreement with simple tight-binding calculations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a type of transmon split-junction qubit which can be tuned by Meissner screening currents flowing in the adjacent superconducting film electrodes. The best detected relaxation time (T1) was of the order of 50μs and the dephasing time (T2) about 40μs. The achieved period of oscillation with magnetic field was much smaller than in the usual SQUID-based transmon qubits; thus a strong effective field amplification has been realized. This Meissner qubit allows a strong mixing of the current flowing in the qubit junctions and the currents generated by the Abrikosov vortices. We present a quantitative analysis of the radiation-free relaxation in qubits coupled to the Abrikosov vortices. The observation of coherent quantum oscillations provides strong evidence that the position of the vortex as well as its velocity do not have to accept exact values but can be smeared in the quantum mechanical sense. The eventual relaxation of such states contributes to an increased relaxation rate of the qubit coupled to vortices.
