Abstract

Plastic scintillator strips are considered as one of the promising solutions for the cost-effective construction of total-body positron emission tomography, (PET) system. The purpose of the performed measurements is to compare the transparency of long plastic scintillators with dimensions 6 mm x 24 mm x 1000 mm and with all surfaces polished. Six different types of commercial, general purpose, blue-emitting plastic scintillators with low attenuation of visible light were tested, namely: polyvinyl toluene-based BC-408, EJ-200, RP-408, and polystyrene-based Epic, SP32 and UPS-923A. For determination of the best type of plastic scintillator for totalbody Jagiellonian positron emission tomograph (TB-J-PET) construction, emission and transmission spectra, and technical attenuation length (TAL) of blue light-emitting by the scintillators were measured and compared. The TAL values were determined with the use of UV lamp as excitation source, and photodiode as light detector. Emission spectra of investigated scintillators have maxima in the range from 420 nm to 429 nm. The BC-408 and EJ-200 have the highest transmittance values of about 90% at the maximum emission wavelength measured through a 6 mm thick scintillator strip and the highest technical attenuation length reaching about 2000 mm, allowing assembly of long detection modules for time-of-flight (TOF) J-PET scanners. Influence of the 6 mm x 6 mm, 12 mm x 6 mm, 24 mm x 6 mm cross-sections of the 1000 mm long EJ-200 plastic scintillator on the TAL and signal intensity was measured. Abstract

The 4-pentyl-4′-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) molecule conformation and structure alignment have been investigated by means of temperature variable Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy in a wide temperature range (from −90 to 50 °C) covering the 5CB glass-like, metastable and stable crystalline, nematic and isotropic phases defined by differential scanning calorimetry measurements. The corresponding FTIR absorption and PL emission bands reflect a strong dipolar association and a formation of at least two types of 5CB dimeric structures with antiparallel or parallel orientation in the planar configuration. No formation of hydrogen bonds between the cyano groups and hydrogen atoms of the adjacent benzene ring has been found. Besides, a small amount of the 5CB monomer structure has been shown to be present in all phases. The observed temperature-induced changes in the IR and PL spectra can be used as an independent source of experimental information on conformational equilibria and structure alignment of 5CB in different states under the phase transitions. Abstract

The thermal analysis and infrared (IR) spectroscopy were used to study cyclohexanol irreversible transformations from an orientationally disordered plastic state to metastable III and then to a stable II crystalline phase. It was found that the orientational glass transition in cyclohexanol occurs at Tg ∼ 163.5 K. Solid–solid transition from orientationally disordered phase I to metastable phase III occurs at 195 K. Crystal phase III nucleates at Ta = 203 K and converts into phase I at T = 233.7 K. The stable crystal phase II is formed by nucleation at 213 K. It converts into phase I at T = 250 K. It is shown by IR spectroscopy that the phase transitions in solid cyclohexanol are correlated with conformational changes in the cyclohexanol molecule. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The effect of the 5CB liquid crystal cooling rate on its luminescence spectra at the low temperature (T = 4.2 K) has been found and studied for two types of nanocomposites: 5CB liquid crystal, doped by carbon nanotubes (NT) or so-called hybrid nanoparticles (NT + OMMT). Hybrid nanoparticles were prepared from organomodified layered montmorillonite minerals (OMMT) with the addition of carbon nanotubes. Experiments have been carried out at two cooling rates, 2 and 10 K/min. Structure of the luminescence spectral bands is associated with 5CB crystallization peculiarities and formation of its glass-like state under different cooling regimes of the isotropic phase. The reasons for the short-wavelength shifts of the luminescence peaks for the 5CB–(NT + OMMT) sample compared to the 5CB–NT one are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
