For any prime p, the theory of p-local compact groups is modelled on the p-local homotopy theory of classifying spaces of compact Lie groups and p-compact groups and generalises the earlier concept of p-local finite groups. These objects have maximal tori and Weyl groups, although the Weyl groups need not be generated by pseudoreflections. In this paper, we study the rational p-adic cohomology of the classifying space of a p-local compact group and prove that just as for compact Lie groups, it is isomorphic to the ring of invariants of the Weyl group action on the cohomology of the classifying space of the maximal torus. This is applied to show that unstable Adams operations on p-local compact groups are determined in the appropriate sense by the map they induce on rational cohomology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A barley straw was modified by a surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride, and used as an adsorbent for acid (acid blue 40) and reactive dye (reactive black 5) adsorption in aqueous solution. Characterization of the modified barley straw was performed using N2 adsorption, titration, and FT-IR analysis. It was found that the surfactant modified barley straw exhibits higher adsorption to acid blue 40 than reactive black 5 and adsorption of the dyes is influenced by several parameters such as dye initial concentration, adsorbent dosage, solution pH, and adsorption temperature. Adsorption isotherms show that maximum adsorption of acid blue 40 and reactive black 5 is 1.02×10¿4 and 2.54×10¿5 mol/g, respectively. Desorption studies show that both dyes are strongly bounded with the adsorbent and exhibit low desorption. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Introduction. We assess the attitudes of Spanish doctors towards immigrant patients. Material and method. Design: cross-sectional descriptive study carried out in January-June 2003. Sample and setting. Family doctors and third-year residents of 15 health care centers in Zaragoza, Spain. Instrument: specifically designed interview answered in anonymously and on a voluntary basis. Results. A total of 62.3 % of the sample responded. Nearly 75 % of the doctors had received training on immigration, mainly from a theoretical point of view. Almost 25 % of immigrant consultations are not related to health matters. Doctors think that immigrant patients somatize more than Spanish ones but they do not suffer from more psychiatric illness. They also think immigrants show less treatment compliance and are more demanding. They disagree about possible racial biases in diagnosis or treatment of these patients. Spanish doctors consider that the different ethnic groups present similar management difficulties. The group with the most negative stereotype was the patients from Muslim North African countries. The mod two cohomology of the three connective covering of S3 has the formformula herewhere x2n is in degree 2n and n = 2. If F denotes the homotopy theoretic fibre of the map S3 ’ B2S1 of degree 2, then the mod2 cohomology of F is also of the same form for n = 1. Notice (cf. Section 7 of the present paper) that the existence of spaces whose cohomology has this form for high values of n would immediately provide Arf invariant elements in the stable stem. Hence, it is worthwhile to determine for what values of n the above algebra can be realized as the mod2 cohomology of some space. The purpose of this paper is to construct a further example of a space with such a cohomology algebra for n = 4 and to show that no other values of n are admissible.
