As companies respond to intensifying competitive pressures and challenges, they ask more and more of their employees. But organizations often have very little to show for the efforts of their talented and engaged workers. By selecting fewer initiatives with greater impact, companies can make their strategies more powerful. A strategic initiative is worthwhile only if it does one or more of the following: •It creates value for customers by raising their willingness to pay. As your company finds ways to innovate or to improve existing products, the maximum price people will be willing to pay for the offering rises. •It creates value for employees by making work more attractive. Offering better jobs lowers the minimum compensation that you have to offer to attract talent to your business. •It creates value for suppliers by reducing their operating cost. As suppliers’ costs go down, the lowest price they would be willing to accept for their goods falls. As companies expand the total amount of value created for their customers, employees, and suppliers, they position themselves for enduring financial success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The average U.S. household contains a trove of potentially reusable goods worth roughly $4,500. That’s a lot of trapped value, and companies are at last getting serious about accessing it—by developing new resale capabilities. Resale has been with us for a very long time, of course—at yard sales, on used-car lots, in classified ads. But the magnitude of the market is changing, boosted by Gen Z consumers and a growing demand for sustainability. Some major brands, including Apple, Nike, Rolex, and Walmart, are moving into the market. And GlobalData estimates that the total resale market in the United States is around $175 billion. In this article, Robertson, a former dean of the Wharton School, focuses on the potential benefits of resale and helps leaders think about whether resale makes sense for their brands. Drawing on inter- views with executives who work at companies that are actively pursuing resale and at third-party plat- forms that have become important partners in the resale ecosystem, he offers five guidelines for resale success: (1) design friction-free processes, (2) work with a third-party platform, (3) transition to the Gen Z consumer, (4) integrate brand-loyalty initiatives, and (5) build an integrated portfolio. Privacy and antitrust are on a collision course. Large firms with monopoly power or near-monopoly power can build products that ostensibly enhance user privacy while raising rivals' costs and allowing monopolist firms to gain footholds in secondary markets. In this Note, I use the example of Apple's privacy changes, the impact these changes had on digital advertising, and Apple's subsequent expansion of its own digital marketing offerings as a motivating example of how current antitrust doctrine is ill-equipped to handle this new form of monopolist behavior. Privacy is the latest example of an "incommensurability" problem in the final stage of the standard rule of reason analysis. Even if a plaintiff can demonstrate competitive harm from privacy-preserving conduct, courts are constrained in what type of relief they can order. Fortunately, one of the main federal antitrust enforcers--the Federal Trade Commission--is also the source of much of federal privacy law. It has the authority and expertise to promulgate rules pursuant to section 18 of the Federal Trade Commission Act to address anticompetitive privacy and strike the appropriate balance between competition and consumer protection. Much of the Commission's privacy enforcement has reflected the heavily criticized "notice-and-choice" privacy framework. However, the Commission's recent initiation of the Magnusson-Moss rulemaking process signals an opening to not only move beyond this framework, but also to consider both competition and privacy in the formation of any rule regulating technology firms. Stock market prediction and its analysis is a growing topic and is a field to research in today's world. Even though the analysis is quite tough there are large number of data sets that have been available for the prediction to be done. In order to increase the quality of the output, this project seeks to forecast the stock market utilizing financial news, analyst opinions, and quotes. It suggests a cutting-edge technique for forecasting the closing price of the stock market. Several researchers have made various contributions in this field of chaotic forecast. The conventional methods up until now have been fundamental and technical analyses. This project's goal is to assess the viability and effectiveness of LSTM and Exponential Moving average for stock market forecasting. EMA works on with regression model and LSTM works in form of 0 and 1 where 0 denotes no input is taken and 1 denotes all the input have taken. In this paper, we have taken datasets of 4 different companies i.e. UniquLo, Netflix, Apple and Amazon with graphical analysis for more clarity. Our paper presents that Moving average method of predicting stock market is more accurate than LSTM with an accuracy difference of 7.76%. The accuracy of MA was 92% and for LSTM was 84.24%. The article discusses whether Apple should develop a touchscreen Mac. While Apple has been insistent that the iPad and Mac are different devices for different use cases, a recent patent suggests that Apple may be interested in developing a touchscreen notebook. Two-in-one devices, such as the Microsoft Surface, offer greater flexibility and can be used as both a notebook and a tablet. However, using a touchscreen device in 'laptop mode' can be uncomfortable, and there are limitations to iPadOS that make it less functional than macOS. Ultimately, Apple may be intentionally keeping the iPad and Mac separate to encourage users to buy both devices. The article concludes that while Apple may eventually change its mind and release a touchscreen computer, it may be better for the company to continue improving its existing iPad and Mac offerings. We analyze whether industry competition influences analyst coverage decisions and whether analysts benefit from covering product market competitors. We find that analysts are more likely to cover a firm when this firm competes with more firms already covered by the analyst. We also find that the intensity of competition among these competitors is additionally important to the coverage decision. Moreover, we find that analysts who cover product market competitors are more likely to obtain analyst star status. These results are consistent with the importance to analysts of industry competition and product market knowledge accumulated through covering product market competitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study was to examine the validity of two wearable smartwatches (the Apple Watch 6 (AW) and the Galaxy Watch 4 (GW)) and smartphone applications (Apple Health for iPhone mobiles and Samsung Health for Android mobiles) for estimating step counts in daily life. A total of 104 healthy adults (36 AW, 25 GW, and 43 smartphone application users) were engaged in daily activities for 24 h while wearing an ActivPAL accelerometer on the thigh and a smartwatch on the wrist. The validities of the smartwatch and smartphone estimates of step counts were evaluated relative to criterion values obtained from an ActivPAL accelerometer. The strongest relationship between the ActivPAL accelerometer and the devices was found for the AW (r = 0.99, p < 0.001), followed by the GW (r = 0.82, p < 0.001), and the smartphone applications (r = 0.93, p < 0.001). For overall group comparisons, the MAPE (Mean Absolute Percentage Error) values (computed as the average absolute value of the group-level errors) were 6.4%, 10.5%, and 29.6% for the AW, GW, and smartphone applications, respectively. The results of the present study indicate that the AW and GW showed strong validity in measuring steps, while the smartphone applications did not provide reliable step counts in free-living conditions. - Abstract
This paper aims to explore key pillars of supply chain competitiveness (SCC) and understand how top supply chains remain competitive in the long term. The research design is divided into two phases. First, an extensive review of the scholarly SCC literature is conducted to identify the core pillars that help achieve SCC. Second, the literature published in practitioner outlets on the five selected companies of Gartner's Supply Chain Top 25 is scrutinized to understand how top supply chains apply the core pillars of SCC in practice. A total of 193 scientific and practitioner articles were analyzed to develop the key pillars of SCC. This study identified six key pillars of SCC in the literature: innovation, sustainability, collaboration, information technology, agility, and flexibility. It has been found that a combination of these pillars, if not all, will be required to remain competitive in the post-COVID-19 era. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HUMAN facial recognition software , *FACIAL paralysis , *FACIAL nerve , *APPLICATION software , *EVALUATION methodology - Abstract
While subjective methods like the Yanagihara system and the House-Brackmann system are standard in evaluating facial paralysis, they are limited by intra- and inter-observer variability. Meanwhile, quantitative objective methods such as electroneurography and electromyography are time-consuming. Our aim was to introduce a swift, objective, and quantitative method for evaluating facial movements. We developed an application software (app) that utilizes the facial recognition functionality of the iPhone (Apple Inc., Cupertino, USA) for facial movement evaluation. This app leverages the phone's front camera, infrared radiation, and infrared camera to provide detailed three-dimensional facial topology. It quantitatively compares left and right facial movements by region and displays the movement ratio of the affected side to the opposite side. Evaluations using the app were conducted on both normal and facial palsy subjects and were compared with conventional methods. Our app provided an intuitive user experience, completing evaluations in under a minute, and thus proving practical for regular use. Its evaluation scores correlated highly with the Yanagihara system, the House-Brackmann system, and electromyography. Furthermore, the app outperformed conventional methods in assessing detailed facial movements. Our novel iPhone app offers a valuable tool for the comprehensive and efficient evaluation of facial palsy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The proposed model is a Deep Learning (DL) based method employing Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks for forecasting stocks. The aim of this approach is forecasting stock prices of Apple Inc. using statistics on previous stock prices obtained from Tiingo. The proposed model consists of several stages of processing and modelling, including data cleaning, feature selection, feature scaling, model building, model evaluation, model improvement, and prediction. Cleaning, organising, and transforming raw data into a format appropriate for analysis are all parts of data pre-processing. Feature engineering involves the data extraction and selection of relevant features for accuracy improvement of the model. The scaling of features involves normalising the data to prevent bias in the model. The LSTM models are built and evaluated using multiple metrics such as Mean Squared Error (MAE) and Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE). The model is iteratively improved using a combination of hyperparameter tuning and feature engineering. Finally, the model is then used to forecast stock prices for the following 30 days, and the accuracy of the forecasts is determined. The proposed methodology is designed to outperform traditional LSTM models for predicting the future price of stock by incorporating novel techniques, for feature engineering and model refinement. The suggested design is a comprehensive approach for forecasting future stock prices using DL based techniques. The model is designed to be flexible and adaptable, allowing for customization for different datasets and prediction horizons. It represents a significant improvement over existing LSTM models for stock price prediction to be valuable in a variety of financial industry applications. This paper collects data from Tiingo API and uses stacked LSTM to train the model. The experimental results give only 0.0813 RMSE, which proves that the model is more accurate and precise. Background: 'Candidatus Phytoplasma mali', the causal agent of apple proliferation disease, exerts influence on its host plant through various effector proteins, including SAP11CaPm which interacts with different TEOSINTE BRANCHED1/ CYCLOIDEA/ PROLIFERATING CELL FACTOR 1 and 2 (TCP) transcription factors. This study examines the transcriptional response of the plant upon early expression of SAP11CaPm. For that purpose, leaves of Nicotiana occidentalis H.-M. Wheeler were Agrobacterium-infiltrated to induce transient expression of SAP11CaPm and changes in the transcriptome were recorded until 5 days post infiltration. Results: The RNA-seq analysis revealed that presence of SAP11CaPm in leaves leads to downregulation of genes involved in defense response and related to photosynthetic processes, while expression of genes involved in energy production was enhanced. Conclusions: The results indicate that early SAP11CaPm expression might be important for the colonization of the host plant since phytoplasmas lack many metabolic genes and are thus dependent on metabolites from their host plant. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Apple Inc. switched its product launch from onsite events to pre-recorded online broadcasts. Yet this form has been carried on even though the pandemic has faded. It is unclear if this shift was accompanied by a move in language complexity and how the communication effect was influenced. This study analysed Apple's product launch events from 2016 to 2022 using quantitative linguistics metrics such as lexical complexity, word token length, entropy, readability, and sentence length distribution. The analysis adopted the reach-effect-durability framework for interpreting the effects of strategic communication. The results showed that Apple's online product launch events featured richer and longer words, increased text difficulty, and a decrease in the proportion of short sentences. Such changes happened in a balanced manner that can be interpreted in view of the driving and restraining forces resulting from the mode shift of the launch event. This study demonstrates the feasibility of assessing efforts and strategies used in a communication campaign through quantitative text analysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper builds on Khan's work on Amazon by transferring her normative framework to Apple. It explores the company's anti-competitive business practices, main antitrust concerns, and the currently proposed reform measures from an innovative business ethics and law (i.e., ordoliberal) perspective. The paper argues that one of the key issues with Apple is the company's closed ecosystem combined with its role as an internet gatekeeper. The E.U.'s Digital Markets Act, which aims to open Apple's ecosystem – via data portability, interoperability, and multi-homing requirements – is a necessary step in the right direction. Yet, it is insufficient to prevent the lock-in effects of a 'walled product garden' and ensure complete device and platform neutrality. That is, additional steps must be taken to overcome Apple's dual role as a platform operator and service provider and inhibit the company from engaging in anti-competitive business conduct. This paper proposes a new test for unit root processes with a partial quadratic trend on an unknown break date, denoted as the URQ process herein. Such a process is extremely similar to the explosive bubble process, and both can capture the sharp rise in prices. We develop the asymptotic distributions under the local-to-unity hypothesis, which covers the URQ null and explosive root alternatives. Simulations show that the test has good finite sample performances and can differentiate explosive bubble processes from URQ processes. An application to the Kweichow Moutai and Apple stocks, which exhibit striking price rises during their respective sample periods, shows that both prices follow URQ processes. We further provide a fundamental analysis. The significant increases in earnings, returns, dividends, and fundamental score after the partial quadratic trend occurs provide evidence that a fundamental improvement rather than a bubble mainly drives such drastic price rises. This research investigates the mediating role of perceived brand authenticity (PBA) between brand experience (BE) and brand love (BL) of global high-tech brands Apple and Samsung. A quantitative study was conducted in Japan, India, and Portugal. The research found evidence that PBA is a multidimensional, reflective-formative higher-order construct composed of two lower-order components namely PBA Core and PBA Peripheral. The findings also contribute to understand how consumers are impacted by different BE and PBA dimensions using the lens of consumer culture theory and how BL is formed as a social-cultural phenomena. Finally, the study demonstrates for the first time that relationship intensity and self-authenticity moderate the effect of BE on PBA. Although limited to three countries and high-tech brands, the findings are of relevance to global brands by raising awareness that culture plays a key role in how consumers perceive authentic brand experiences and how passionate feelings for global brands can be strengthened. NONRELATIONAL databases , *CLOUD computing , *OPEN source software , *METADATA , *CLOUD storage - Abstract
FoundationDB is an open-source transactional key-value store created more than 10 years ago. It is one of the first systems to combine the flexibility and scalability of NoSQL architectures with the power of ACID transactions. FoundationDB adopts an unbundled architecture that decouples an in-memory transaction management system, a distributed storage system, and a built-in distributed configuration system. Each sub-system can be independently provisioned and configured to achieve scalability, high availability, and fault tolerance. FoundationDB includes a deterministic simulation framework, used to test every new feature under a myriad of possible faults. This rigorous testing makes FoundationDB extremely stable and allows developers to introduce and release new features in a rapid cadence. FoundationDB offers a minimal and carefully chosen feature set, which has enabled a range of disparate systems to be built as layers on top. FoundationDB is the underpinning of cloud infrastructure at Apple, Snowflake, and other companies, due to its consistency, robustness, and availability for storing user data, system metadata and configuration, and other critical information. Virtually all managers in consumer businesses recognize major social, economic, and technological trends. But many do not consider the profound ways in which trends—especially those that seem unrelated to their core markets—influence consumers’ aspirations, attitudes, and behaviors. As a result, companies may be ceding to rivals an opportunity to transform the industry. For instance, the impact of the digital revolution on consumers’ daily lives is hardly a revelation. But it may be less obvious that heavy digital users tend to focus on short-term goals, demand immediate gratification, and expect to multitask. That insight, the authors argue, is as important for a company that sells lipstick as it is for one that sells smartphones. The authors present a process for identifying the trends that could reshape a business and three strategies for leveraging trends to create new value propositions: Infuse aspects of the trend into the product category to augment traditional offerings, as Coach did with its lower-priced Poppy handbags. Combine aspects of the trend with attributes of the category to produce offerings that transcend it, as Nike did with its Nike+ sports kit and web service. Or counteract negative effects of the trend with new products and services that reaffirm the category’s values, as iToys did with its ME2 video game, which encourages children to be physically active. IPHONE (Smartphone) , *BUSINESS planning - Abstract
Apple's approach to opening up the iPhone is causing problems for consumers, developers, the EU, and Apple itself. The European Union's Digital Markets Act (DMA) has forced Apple to comply with regulations targeting its business practices. However, Apple's compliance seems to focus on satisfying the letter of the law rather than the spirit, which has led to criticism from European regulators. Apple's strategy appears to be incremental compliance, making minimal changes and waiting for further guidance from regulators. This approach carries risks, as Apple needs to maintain a good relationship with regulators to avoid punishment. [Extracted from the article]
