The North African margin of Gondwana formed by subduction and accretion during Ediacaran to Cambrian times. Sections of this active margin were incorporated during the late Paleozoic to the Variscan and Appalachian orogens. In the Variscan realm, these sections define in some regions a Cadomian basement comprising thick metasedimentary series associated with coeval subduction-related magmatic rock dated in the range 650–500 Ma. In the Cap de Creus Massif (Eastern Pyrenean domain), the Cadomian metasedimentary rocks formed from sediments derived from mixed felsic and intermediate/mafic sources, intruded by granitoid and minor mafic igneous rocks. These series were formed in a peri -Gondwanan volcanic arc setting, like other Cadomian series described in the SW of the Iberian Massif, such as Serie Negra Group of the Ossa Morena Complex. However, the Nd model ages of the Cap de Creus metasedimentary samples range from 1431 to 1620 Ma and are younger than those of their SW Iberia equivalents. This result can be interpreted as an indication of an eastern location in the Ediacaran - Cambrian peri -Gondwanan magmatic arc. Furthermore, the Cadomian series in the Central Iberian Zone have even younger Nd model ages than those of SW and NE Iberia. We present two end-member paleogeographic models consistent with reconstruction of the initial location of the Cap de Creus Massif and its relations with other domains (Ossa Morena Complex and Central Iberian Zone) in this sector of the North African Gondwanan margin. In the Precambrian dolomites in the central Sichuan Basin, a substantial paleo-oil system previously existed, which has since evolved into a dry gas system that is currently in place. The genesis of this paleo-oil system remained poorly understood, leaving uncertainties regarding the timing of oil charging and associated source rocks. Integration of Re–Os geochronometry with basin modeling allows temporal-spatial constraints on the ancient petroleum system to be established. Two texturally distinct generations of reservoir bitumen were identified. Late-generation bitumen yielded a geologically meaningful Re–Os age of 189 ± 20 Ma (MSWD = 10.4, 2σ), distinct from the previously documented Re–Os ages such as the 414 ± 44 Ma reported by Shi et al. (2020). This new age, along with the ∼414 Ma, aligns within uncertainties with the two relative timings derived from our independent basin model (ca. 450–390 Ma and 260–180 Ma), revealing two temporally distinct oil generation-migration events. The date of ∼189 Ma also lends support to the previous oil charge timing inferred from fluid inclusions. We evaluated the imprecisions of these two Re–Os ages and considered them to result from a narrow spread in 187Re/188Os, and variations in initial Os isotopic compositions (Os i) due to the giant size of the petroleum system and a long duration of oil generation from source kitchen over a large geographical area in this play. Effects of asphaltene precipitation, due to uplift-induced decompression of the migrating oils, may also have contributed to the scatter. Separating the samples based on Os i produced a higher precision age (184.1 ± 5.7 Ma, Model 1) with an MSWD of 0.97. The first oil charge is relatively weak as shown by the basin model and observed bitumen volumes, and it had not been well preserved due to significant reservoir exhumation by Caledonian tectonism. Consequently, the younger oil charge is considered to be the principal precursor to the current dry gas accumulations. Os isotope histories for four potential source units were constructed using publicly available Re–Os data. Comparisons between bitumen and rock Os compositions tend to support the lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation as the predominant source unit for the two major paleo-oil charges. However, contributions from the Duoshantuo, Dengying, and Maidiping source rocks can not be precluded. Alkaline rocks of prevailing sodic composition form major ring complexes and stocks along a seismically active N–S structural lineament parallel to the Paraguay river course. All these occurrences are encompassed by the Alto Paraguay Province, their rocks corresponding to the oldest known alkaline magmatic activity in the Paraná Basin, with a Middle Triassic age of 241.5 ± 1.3 Ma. Intrusive rocks ranging from silica-undersaturated (nepheline and/or sodalite syenites) to silica-oversaturated (quartz syenites and alkali granites) and their fine-grained counterparts constitute the most abundant rock-types. Clinopyroxenes, associated amphiboles and varying amounts of biotite are the main mafic minerals present. Alkali feldspar (mainly mesoperthites and subordinate sanidine and anorthoclase) and feldspathoids (nepheline and/or sodalite) are widespread. A late-stage magmatic to metasomatic/deuteric mineral assemblage is mostly typical of miaskitic to agpaitic rocks of the Cerro Boggiani complex, whereas rare accessory silicate minerals are found in peralkaline syenites of the Cerro Siete Cabezas major intrusion. Positive Nb–Ta and Zr–Hf anomalies and negative Sr, P, and Ti spikes are common features to the whole province. REE behavior shows enrichment in LREE and strong LREE/HREE fractionation with various parallel subtrends. Radiometric dates of key rock units indicate that a remnant Late Mesozoic ocean of the Huatung Basin is still preserved today east of the South China Sea (SCS). We integrate regional geology with a Cretaceous oceanic basement in the vicinity of the Huatung Basin to reconstruct the Huatung Plate east of the Eurasian continent. Results of geophysical investigations, four expeditions of deep-sea drilling and a renaissance of regional geology allow us to propose a hypothesis that the mechanism responsible for the SCS opening was raised from strike-slip fault on the east. The hypothesis suggests that the SCS opening could highly relate to the strike-slip faults inherited from Late Mesozoic structures onshore–offshore the SE Cathaysia Block to develop rhombic-shaped extensional basins en echelon on the thinned Eurasian continental crust in the Early Cenozoic. It was followed by sinistral strike-slip movements along the boundary between the Eurasian Plate and the Huatung Plate driven by oblique subduction of the Huatung Plate to the northwest coupled with slab-pull force by southward subduction of the Proto-SCS to open up the triangle-shaped oceanic East Sub-basin in the Early Oligocene (33/34 Ma). The spreading ridge then propagated southwestward in the step-over segment between the Zhongnan-Lile and the Red River strike-slip fault systems to open the triangle-shaped oceanic Southwest Sub-basin by 23 Ma. The plate boundary fault was subsequently converted into the Manila Trench when the Eocene Sierra Madre arc of the Huatung Plate had moved from the south to its present latitude by the Middle Miocene. In this work, we report the geochemical, whole-rock Sr-, Nd-, and Hf-isotopes, and zircon U–Pb age and Hf–O isotopic compositions for six granitic intrusions in northeastern Fujian, coastal region of southeastern China, to elucidate the petrogenesis of aluminous and peralkaline A-type granites in this region. Zircon U–Pb dating of these rocks (including porphyritic syenites, porphyritic granites, alkali-feldspar granites, and arfvedsonite granites) yielded Late Cretaceous ages of 94–98 Ma. Mineral assemblage and geochemical features suggested that the arfvedsonite granites were peralkaline A-type but the porphyritic syenites, porphyritic granites, and alkali-feldspar granites were aluminous A-type. Geochemical data, whole-rock Nd–Hf isotopes (ε Nd (t) = −5.5 to −4.0, ε Hf (t) = −3.6 to 0), and the zircon Hf–O isotopes (ε Hf (t) = −3.0 to +1.4, δ18O = 5.4‰–6.0‰) indicated that the porphyritic syenites were produced by partial melting of crustal rocks in the lower crust. The porphyritic granites and alkali-feldspar granites had similar geochemical features and zircon Hf–O isotopic composition with the porphyritic syenites, suggesting that they were formed by feldspar-dominant crystal fractionation of deep crust derived syenitic magma under shallow crustal level. Compared with the aluminous A-type granites, the peralkaline A-type granites had lower abundance of Al 2 O 3 , MgO, CaO, Ba, and Sr, higher abundance of SiO 2 and HFSE, as well as higher ratio of total FeO/MgO, Ga/Al, and Rb/Sr. However, the whole-rock Nd-, Hf- and zircon Hf–O isotopic compositions of the peralkaline and aluminous A-type granites were similar. It could be inferred that the peralkaline A-type granites were formed by crystal fractionation of aluminous A-type granitic magmas. Since the studied A-type granitic intrusions were coeval with the bimodal volcanic rocks and the extensional basins in the coastal region of southeastern China, they were likely produced in an extensional setting, possibly during lithospheric thinning that resulted from the subduction of the paleo-Pacific plate beneath southeastern China. • Aluminous and peralkaline A-type granites were crystallized at 94–98 Ma. • Aluminous and peralkaline A-type granites were derived from a common source. • Aluminous A-type granite was produced by partial melting of lower crustal rocks. • Peralkaline A-type granite was formed via crystal fractionation. We describe a new species of the fossil genus Laurinoxylon from the El Bosque Formation (Eocene), Chiapas, Mexico. The new species is characterized by: diffuse porous wood with indistinct growth rings; solitary vessels and in radial multiples of two to three vessels per radial multiple; simple perforation plates; alternate intervessel pits: septate and non-septate fibers; round vessel-ray parenchyma pits, horizontally and vertically elongated with reduced borders; axial parenchyma scanty paratracheal, vasicentric, apotracheal diffuse; heterogeneous rays, and oil cells associated to the ray parenchyma and among the fibers. This fossil genus has been described before from the Cretaceous to the Neogene, worldwide. This is the first formal record of Laurinoxylon and the first Eocene macrofossil report of Lauraceae from Mexico. This new species supports the hypothesis that the Lauraceae had a wide distribution during the past and that Mexico may be an important region for the diversification of the family as evidenced by its fossil record dating from the Late Cretaceous and by the high number of genera and species that currently grow in Mexico. • A continuum of Paleoproterozoic heritage, seen in Nd model ages, from N to S in the Bushmanland Domain (BD), with the Buffels River shear zone simply a regional discontinuity. • The southern BD (SBD) has a greater juvenile component than the northern BD (NBD), becoming more dominant post-1.10 Ga. • Orthogneisses derived from crustal magmas with subduction-influenced signatures with mixed Meso- to Paleoproterozoic model ages. The timing of tectonomagmatic events and petrogenesis of ortho- and paragneisses within the high-grade southern Bushmanland Domain (SBD) of the Namaqua Metamorphic Province is, largely, poorly constrained. U-Pb age dating and whole rock lithogeochemistry of the rocks of the upper granulite facies Kliprand dome provide constraints with regards to the evolution of the SBD during the 1.2–1.0 Ga Namaquan Orogeny. The SBD has a greater juvenile component, particularly added between ∼1.1 and 1.02 Ga, compared to the northern Bushmanland Domain (NBD). This is reflected in marginally younger T DM model ages (1.60–1.95 Ga) than for the NBD (∼1.9–2.4 Ga), and higher ε Nd(t) values for magmatic rocks, particularly for the late- to post-tectonic Spektakel Suite (SS), concentrated in the SBD. The ∼1.06 Ga Klein Lieslap Charnockite of the SS was derived from reworking of radiogenic Paleoproterozoic arc crust, but has a large juvenile depleted component compared to that of the ∼1.19 Ga Grootberg Gneiss of the syn-tectonic Little Namaqualand Suite. SBD mafic magmas were derived from low degrees of partial melting of subduction-influenced enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle. The pre-tectonic ∼1.17 Ga Oorkraal Suite shows limited crustal contamination of mantle-derived melts. The post-tectonic ∼1.05 Ga Koperberg Suite was derived from deeper mantle melting than that in the NBD, but shows less crustal contamination. The supracrustal Kamiesberg Group was derived from mixed, reworked Meso- to Paleoproterozoic crust that showed a more dominant depleted component compared to that in the NBD. Incongruent anatexis of the paragneisses gave rise to crosscutting garnetiferous quartzofeldspathic segregations, notably the strongly peraluminous ∼1.07 Ga Ibequas Leucogranite. D 2 deformation, at ∼1.11–1.09 Ga, resulted in penetrative foliation. D 3 deformation, related to the development of a sub-vertical foliation in the limbs of F 2 folds, is constrained to ∼1.07–1.06 Ga, between emplacement of the Ibequas Leucogranite and the Koperberg Suite. Peak granulite facies M 3 metamorphism occurred at ∼1.05–1.02 Ga. These age constraints are similar to those of the NBD reflecting a synchronous tectonomagmatic and kinematic history. Phylogeny of birch mice is estimated using sequences of ten nuclear genes and one mitochondrial gene. Based on the results of tree reconstructions and molecular dating, five major lineages are recognized: "tianschanica," "concolor," "caudata," "betulina," and "caucasica." It is established that the three latter lineages constitute a clade and that the long‐tailed birch mouse Sicista caudata is the sister group of the "caucasica" lineage. The "tianschanica" lineage is placed as the sister branch to all other species, however, with insufficient support. The cytochrome b tree is generally concordant with the nuclear topology. The molecular clock results suggest that the radiation among the main lineages occurred in the Late Miocene–Early Pliocene (6.0–4.7 Mya). The correspondence between molecular dating and the fossil record is discussed. Based on nuclear data, a high level of divergence between cryptic species in the "tianschanica" lineage is confirmed. Extensive Mesozoic outcrops exposed in the Aaiun-Tarfaya Basin, in the Atlantic margin of Morocco, have been overlooked for decades. Original subdivisions and dating of rocks, performed more than five decades ago, have survived until today virtually without any update. In the north eastern margin of the basin, key Mesozoic sections have been revisited. Its coastal position next to the Variscan Anti-Atlas Orogen allows insight into the interplay between local tectonics and eustasy during deposition of sedimentary sequences on passive margins. High-resolution stratigraphy and sedimentology have allowed for an improved understanding of the depositional systems and evolution during the early opening of the Atlantic and provided a valuable control point recording the syn - and early post-rift evolution of the basin. Three formations are described: (i) a basal continental red bed unit unconformably overlying the Palaezoic Variscan basement of the Ifni Inlier; (ii) a unit dominated by intertidal clastics and microbial carbonates, and (iii) a shallow marine unit comprising mixed siliciclastic-carbonates. Despite the sedimentological affinity of these outcrops to Triassic or Lower Jurassic deposits elsewhere in Morocco, these units had previously been assigned an Early Cretaceous age, based on limited non-conclusive fossil fauna and basin-scale lithostratigraphic correlation. New collections of macrofauna have yielded a Bathonian age for the upper part of the succession and a possible Triassic/Early Jurassic for the lower part. The whole succession displays an overall transgressive trend not consistent with the eustatic Bathonian sea-level fall. Local post-rift tectonic pulses exhuming the Western Anti-Atlas coupled with eustasy are responsible for increased sediment supply at this time. Enhanced tectonic subsidence, overcoming sea-level fall, is interpreted to be the main driver for creation of accommodation and preservation of this sequence. Resumed sedimentation on structural heights offshore suggests exhumation of the Western Anti-Atlas ceased by the early Callovian, reducing clastic input to the region and allowing the development of a carbonate platform. Variable regional exhumation and local tectonics along the Moroccan margin during the early post-rift stage influenced the highly variable nature of clastic vs carbonate deposition, thickness distribution and depositional environments at this time. Order Diplobathrida is a major clade of camerate crinoids spanning the Ordovician–Mississippian, yet phylogenetic relationships have only been inferred for Ordovician taxa. This has hampered efforts to construct a comprehensive tree of life for crinoids and develop a classification scheme that adequately reflects diplobathrid evolutionary history. Here, I apply maximum parsimony and Bayesian phylogenetic approaches to the fossil record of diplobathrids to infer the largest tree of fossil crinoids to date, with over 100 genera included. Recovered trees provide a framework for evaluating the current classification of diplobathrids. Notably, previous suborder divisions are not supported, and superfamily divisions will require significant modification. Although numerous revisions are required for families, most can be retained through reassignment of genera. In addition, recovered trees were used to produce phylogeny‐based estimates of diplobathrid lineage diversity. By accounting for ghost lineages, phylogeny‐based richness estimates offer greater insight into diversification and extinction dynamics than traditional taxonomy‐based approaches alone and provide a detailed summary of the ~150 million‐year evolutionary history of Diplobathrida. This study constitutes a major step toward producing a phylogeny of the Crinoidea and documenting crinoid diversity dynamics. The Xitle volcano is part of the Quaternary Chichinautzin volcanic field, located in the southern portion of the Valley of Mexico. The Xitle lavas were emplaced on the archaeological site of Cuicuilco, one of the first urban settlements of the Preclassic period in Mexico. This eruption had a great impact, since it caused great economic and social changes, favoring the consolidation of Teotihuacan as the dominant city in the Valley of Mexico. Available radiometric studies place the age of the eruption between 4000 to 1500 years BP (before present) and there is evidence that Cuicuilco abandonment was due to an eruption between 200 BC (Before Christ) and 200 AD (Anno Domini/after Christ) without exact definition about the age of this event. Therefore, contributing to the accuracy of the age of the eruption continues to be of great interest. The results of new archaeomagnetic dating of rock samples from a sequence of lava flows from Xitle volcano located within the campus of the University of Mexico (UNAM) campus are presented below. A full geomagnetic vector and the field prediction model SHA.DIF.14K were used for such determinations. Two eruptive periods are identified, the first between 1742 and 1491 BC and the second, related to the eruption of Xitle volcano, between 79 BC and 595 AD. The age of the second period is compatible with the hypothesis of gradual abandonment of Cuicuilco and coincides with the accepted ages for the volcano's most important eruptive period. Establishing temporal constraints on major volcanic eruptions is limited by the precision of existing geochronometers. Prior work on the La Garita caldera (Colorado, USA), created by the eruption of the Fish Canyon Tuff, failed to resolve temporal differences between pre-, syn-, and post-collapse eruptive units. Here, we report 40Ar/39Ar geochronologic data supporting a ~100 ka eruptive history of the La Garita caldera, and resolving the timing of the pre-caldera Pagosa Peak Dacite, syn-caldera Fish Canyon Tuff, and post-caldera dacite of Nutras Creek. Minimizing uncertainty in neutron fluence by rotating samples during irradiation and employing Bayesian statistical interpretation of analytical data enables resolution of the ~60 ka pre-caldera eruptive history and a hiatus of 0-20 ka prior to the eruption of post-caldera lavas. The improved precision demonstrated using these methods provides previously unresolvable temporal constraints on physical processes in the La Garita magmatic system and underscores the potential of unraveling other closely spaced events in geologic time. Abstract Jurassic adakitic rocks in the southern Lhasa subterrane are relatively rare, poorly documented, and their petrogenesis and geodynamic setting are unclear. To explore these issues, we present zircon U–Pb ages along with Hf isotopic, whole-rock geochemical, and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopic data for hornblende quartz diorite porphyry (HQDP) and quartz diorite porphyry (QDP) in the Ruocuo area, southern margin of the Lhasa terrane, Tibet. Zircon U–Pb dating for these rocks indicates that they were emplaced in the Early–Middle Jurassic (182–170 Ma). Geochemically, HQDP and QDP both show characteristics of adakites, with intermediate SiO 2 (60.62–65.63 wt% and 57.46–60.04 wt%, respectively), relatively high Al 2 O 3 (14.23–18.23 wt% and 18.32–20.14 wt%, respectively) and Sr (344–571 ppm and 514–614 ppm, respectively), and low Y (9.12–13.0 ppm and 11.0–14.9 ppm, respectively) and Yb (0.93–1.31 ppm and 1.08–1.52 ppm, respectively). In addition, they show relatively low ratios of (87Sr/86Sr) i (0.7038–0.7045), (206Pb/204Pb) i (18.31–18.42), (207Pb/204Pb) i (15.56–15.66), and (208Pb/204Pb) i (38.36–38.77) and relatively high values of ε Nd (t) (+5.54 to +6.33) and ε Hf (t) (+11.8 to +17.3). The Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf isotopes of HQDP and QDP are similar to those of the Yarlung Tsangpo ophiolites, indicating that they were predominantly generated by the partial melting of the subducted Neo-Tethys oceanic slab. The subducted Neo-Tethys oceanic slab-derived adakitic rocks that are present in the southern Lhasa subterrane provide strong evidence for proving the presence of oceanic subduction during the Early–Middle Jurassic. By combining our results with the previously reported results, we suggest that the Ruocuo adakitic rocks and Early Mesozoic (Late Triassic to Middle Jurassic) magmatic rocks in the southern Lhasa subterrane formed in a magmatic arc setting related to the northward subduction of the Neo-Tethys oceanic slab, that the initial subduction of the Neo-Tethys oceanic slab occurred prior to the Early Jurassic, and that the upwelling asthenosphere, triggered by the roll-back of the subducted Neo-Tethys oceanic slab, provided the heat that was required for slab melting. However, contrasting these results with the geochemical characteristics of the No. 2 deposit in the Xiongcun Cu–Au district leads us to consider that the Early–Middle Jurassic subducted oceanic slab-derived adakitic porphyries contain a greater potential for porphyry Cu–Au mineralization than the Early Mesozoic normal magmatic rocks in the southern Lhasa subterrane. Furthermore, mineralized Jurassic porphyry has been reported in the Ruocuo area, adjacent to the northern Xigaze forearc basin, indicating that the northern Xigaze forearc basin also has the potential for subduction-related porphyry Cu–Au mineralization. Horsetails (Equisetum, Equisetaceae) are one of the oldest groups of vascular plants with a nearly continuous fossil record dating back to the Carboniferous. Only a few studies have addressed relationships among and within the extant members of this fern genus. We here present the first complete phylogenetic analysis of one or more samples of all extant species covering the full geographical range. Using three plastid loci, we evaluate species limits, taxon circumscription and inter-relationships. Several known hybrids were also included to confirm their parentage. All species for which we included multiple samples are found to form discrete groups, but many infraspecific taxa appear not to warrant recognition. We found strong support for the placement of E. bogotense as sister to the rest of the genus, supporting recognition of a third subgenus in Equisetum, described in this paper as E. subgenus Paramochaete. We have evidence for acceptance of additional species, E. braunii and E. xylochaetum. We accept the American E. praealtum as separate from E. hyemale and we tentatively recognize two varieties in E. ramosissimum. Abstract Cetartiodactyla comprises one of the most diverse mammal radiations. Currently, 23 families, 131 genera and more than 330 species are recognized. Several studies have been trying to resolve its phylogenetic relationships. The most comprehensive dated phylogenetic hypothesis available includes only 55% of the extant species, precluding a clear understanding of ecological and evolutionary patterns in Cetartiodactyla. Here, we gathered all mitochondrial genetic data available in GenBank to build a robust Cetartiodactyla calibrated phylogenetic tree using 21 fossil calibration points. We found mitogenomic data for 225 species and included other 93 species from which there was at least one mitochondrial gene available. Using a Bayesian approach, we generated a dated tree comprising 90% of the extant Cetartiodactyla species (n = 318). The major lineages showed robust support and families divergence times are congruent with the available fossil evidence and with previously published phylogenetic hypotheses. By making available a dated phylogeny with extensively sampled clades, we expect to foster future studies on the origin, tempo and mode of Cetartiodactyla diversification. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents new zircon U-Pb geochronology, Hf isotopic, and whole-rock major- and trace-element geochemical data that provide insights into the petrogenesis and tectonic history of the Riwanchaka granodiorite porphyries of Central Qiangtang, Tibet. Zircon U-Pb ages of 236-230 Ma indicate an early Late Triassic age of emplacement of the porphyries, and zircon Hf isotopic data yield εHf(t) values of - 7.0 to - 1.5 and ancient zircon Hf crustal model ages (TDMC) of 1524-1220 Ma. The granodiorite porphyries are characterized by low K2O contents, high Mg# values, and relatively high Cr and Ni contents. They are classified as I-type calc-alkaline granite and are considered to have formed through the anatexis of ancient mafic crustal rocks with contributions from mantle-derived components. The geochemistry and isotopic compositions of all samples are similar to those of magmatic rocks that originated in the South Qiangtang crust. However, field observations indicate that the pluton intrudes the North Qiangtang crust, and we propose that the granodiorite porphyries were derived by partial melting of subducted continental crust of the South Qiangtang terrane. These new data have been integrated with data from previous studies to construct a new model of slab rollback during northward subduction of the Southern Qiangtang continental crust at ca. 245-226 Ma, thereby improving our understanding of magmatic processes involved in continental subduction in collision settings. The Pliocene-Quaternary volcanics in NE Turkey are mainly hornblende-phyric trachyandesites having a narrow range of SiO2 from 61.88 to 63.00 wt.% and exhibiting adakitic signatures with their Na2O (3.67-4.27 wt.%), Al2O3 (16.19-16.80 wt.%), Y (14.1-16.5 ppm) contents and K2O/Na2O (0.87-1.12), Sr/Y (44.24-54.90), and La/Yb (36.80-43.88) ratios. Plagioclases as the main mineral phases show a wide range of compositions, and weak normal and reverse zoning. Hornblendes are generally edenite and pargasite (Mg#: 0.39-0.74). Clinopyroxenes are augite (Mg#: 0.58-0.76). Biotites have Mg# ranging from 0.45 to 0.66. The textural and compositional variations indicate disequilibrium crystallization possibly arising from magma mixing. The U-Pb zircon dating of the adakitic volcanics yielded 3.4-1.9 Ma. The studied rocks display moderate light rare earth element /heavy rare earth element ratios and enrichment in the lithophile element and depletion in high field strength element, implying that the parental magmas were derived from mantle sources previously enriched by slab-derived fluids and/or subducted sediments. The crystallization temperature and pressure estimations based on the clinopyroxene thermobarometry range from 1144 to 1186°C and from 3.92 to 7.97 kbar, respectively. Hornblende thermobarometry, oxygen fugacity, and hygrometer calculations yielded results as 908-993°C at a pressure of 2.87-5.22 kbar, water content of 4.4-8.4 wt.%, and relative oxygen fugacity (ΔNNO log units) of −0.6 to 0.9, respectively. Biotite thermobarometry suggests relatively higher oxygen fugacity conditions (10-13.33 to 10-17.60) at temperatures of 676-819°C and at pressures from 1.15 to 1.76 kbar. In the light of the obtained data and modelling, it can be concluded that the magmas of the adakitic volcanics were derived from enriched mantle source through relatively higher partial melting and experienced magma mixing with melts at the crustal level. Additionally, the fractional crystallization and assimilation-fractional crystallization processes may have played an important role during the evolution of the studied volcanics. Abstract The provenance of sediments in western Taiwan has been the subject of debate in recent years. Previous investigators, solely based on the U-Pb zircon geochronology for the detrital grains, all advocated the important roles, but with varying emphasis, of drainage systems in the South China Block. Influence of the Changjiang (Yangtze) River from the far-source Yangtze block versus nearby systems like Zhujiang, Minjiang and Jiulongjiang Rivers in the Cathaysia block has been the main issue. However, the fundamental question of whether the provenance is really the South China Block has never been evaluated. Here we report both the U-Pb zircon and Electron MicroProbe (EMP) monazite age data for seven sediment samples from two sides of the Taiwan Strait and synthesize the published data for all these rivers and sedimentary strata in western Taiwan to tackle this problem. The lack of, or insufficient, ~1.8 Ga monazites in the sediments of river mouths for all drainage systems in the South China Block makes them unlikely to be the source of Miocene sediments in western Taiwan where ~1.8 Ga monazite grains occupy 14.5–33.3% of the total age population. With reference to the tectonic evolution of the coastal southeast China-Taiwan region during Early Cretaceous to recent time, we propose a new explanation that invokes a now-concealed microcontinent along the Manila Trench. This microcontinent, probably related to a Paleoproterozoic orogen in Gondwana, eventually collided with the South China Block causing uplift of the easternmost structural element—the Pingtan-Dongshan Metamorphic Belt (PDMB) at ca. 130–120 Ma. It then drifted away sometime after 100 Ma and split into two parts with one becoming today's Palawan-Mindoro terrain of the Philippines. As indicated by the geophysical data near southern Taiwan, the remainder of this split microcontinent had subducted underneath the Philippine Sea plate along Manila Trench as a result of the opening of the South China Sea at ~33 Ma. Both the Peikang and Kuanyin basement highs in the offshore western Taiwan represent the unsubducted remnants of this microcontinent and also the major suppliers of Late Oligocene-Miocene sediments in western Taiwan. On the other hand, the Eocene-Early Oligocene strata of the Hsuehshan Range in central Taiwan show both zircon and monazite age patterns resembling the Eocene-Early Oligocene and recent sediments of the Zhujiang drainage system, indicating the southwestern origin of the protolith Taiwan. This scenario also matches the recent proposition that part of the Central Range belongs to the deep-level accretionary prism of a Miocene subduction system. The Early Caledonian folded region of the southern framing of the Siberian platform, between the Zavkhan and Tuva-Mongolian terranes, contains blocks of the Songino ledge crystalline rocks. In the Bayan Nuur block (southern part of the Songino ledge), the Neoproterozoic (890–780 Ma) Bayan Nuur gneiss-migmatitic and Kholbo Nuur metaterrigenous-volcanogenic complexes are distinguished. The zone of their junction is traced by thrust structures, which are reflected in all structural-material complexes of the Bayan Nuur block. There are tectonic slabs in the junction zone. Their peculiarity is the presence of rocks formed before the formation of thrust gabbro-ultrabasite complex and post-thrust gabbroids and gabbro-diorites. The upper limit of the thrust formation interval is defined by Bayan Nuur pluton granitoids having the age of 790 ± 3 Ma and by gabbroids and anorthosites of Onzula tectonic plate giving the ages of 785 ± 3 and 784 ± 3 Ma. The lower limit of the thrust formation interval is determined by the age of the Bayan Nuur ultrametamorphic granitoid complex (802 ± 6 Ma). Bodies of massive (post-thrust) pegmatoid gabbros and rocks of gabbro-ultrabasite complex possessing clearly manifested thrust-associated structures are recognized in the tectonic slab of the ridge reaching the area of Mount Sant Uul. These rocks are dated at 782 ± 2 and 806 ± 10 Ma, respectively (ID-TIMS). The data indicate that the post-thrust and pre-thrust units cannot be parts of a united layered complex. The Hegenshan–Heihe Suture (HHS) is an important suture zone between the Xing'an and Songliao–Xilinhot blocks in the eastern Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). Many studies have examined the northern and southern parts of this suture zone, but the middle segment remains under-researched and controversial. This paper presents new research into Permian felsic rocks along the middle segment of the HHS, including alkaline granites, rhyolites, and granodiorites. Zircon U–Pb dating of these rocks yielded precise Permian ages of 300.4 ± 2.5, 292.8 ± 2.7, and 293.1 ± 2.2 Ma. The alkaline granites and the rhyolites are A-type rocks that were derived from lower crustal protoliths, with the melting of these protoliths caused by asthenospheric upwelling associated with lithospheric delamination. In comparison, the granodiorites are I-type granites were generated from a mantle-derived magmatic source. The petrogenesis of these granites also involved the assimilation of sedimentary rocks and fractional crystallization. This Permian magmatism occurred during post-collisional extension following the amalgamation of the Xing'an and Songliao–Xilinhot blocks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract The Re-Os geochronometer can be applied to date petroleum, which is the end product of complex natural processes. Improved interpretation of natural Re-Os datasets requires identification of key controlling factors for Re-Os systematics and their isotopic imprint in oils. Here, we focus on the role of water in (re)setting the Re-Os geochronometer in oils, as formation waters and oils often coexist in basinal systems. To quantify Re-Os systematics during water-oil interaction, we performed a series of equilibration experiments between different oils and dilute aqueous solutions doped with Re and Os. The investigated parameters include the oil composition, water to oil ratio, interaction time and the initial Re-Os content in the aqueous solution. In experiments performed across a high concentration gradient, the oils fully homogenized with respect to their Os isotopic composition but had variable 187Re/188Os ratios. This indicates that the Re-Os geochronometer has been reset during water-oil interaction. However, in experiments investigating partial isotopic overprint, the crude oil and its maltene and asphaltene fractions preserved their isochron-derived age. Thus, the Re-Os radiometric clock of a single crude oil sample remains intact, even during partial equilibration of the 187Os/188Os ratio. The present work aims to synthesize the origin and phylogeny of the European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus), of the Family Leporidae, Order Lagomorpha. Lagomorpha is an order of mammals which splits into two living families: Family Leporidae and Family Ochotonidae. Lagomorpha may have descended from the group of mimotonids (Anagaloidea). The diversity of Lagomorphs was certainly higher in the past than in the present, with around 75 genera and more than 230 species represented in the fossil record. These statistics of fossil record are evidences supporting that lagomorph lineages are declining in the present times. The living genera of the Family Leporidae emerged in the early Miocene, with the two most diverse genera, Genus Lepus (hare species) and Genus Sylvilagus (cottontail rabbits), first recorded in the fossil deposits dating back about 8.6 and 7.2 million years ago, respectively. The literature is scarce regarding the phylogeny of Genus Oryctolagus. The genus Oryctolagus comprises a single species (O. cuniculus) and six subspecies, and is the ancestor of all domesticated breeds. The paradox of this species is that, although the group to whom it belongs is in decline, the European rabbit is a species with an extraordinary plasticity, giving birth to a multitude of breeds and varieties of shape and color. Abstract Large Igneous Provinces mark important and consequential events that span almost the entirety of the Earth's history. These punctuated geologically significant events that include earth processes from the core to the atmosphere have been linked to climate changes, mass extinctions, and even large-scale tectonic shifts. To begin to understand the role LIPs play in these important moments across Earth's lifespan, a thorough understanding of how they form in the first place is imperative. The ∼180 Ma Karoo Continental Flood Basalt (CFB) Province has been heavily studied with one of the largest geochemical and geochronological databases available for a CFB; providing an excellent avenue to study in detail the petrogenesis of these large collections of magma. However, despite this large dataset, the origin of the Karoo CFBs is still debated, with many different and conflicting models proposed. Disparities in these models can often be traced down to the degree of influence a plume and/or the sub-continental lithospheric mantle (SCLM) had during the genesis of this magmatic province. Nine sills intruded into the Western Cape Province of the Karoo Basin were investigated using 40Ar/39Ar geochronology, whole rock geochemistry, and Sr, Nd, Pb isotopes. Five of these sills are peculiar as they contain hydrated minerals (biotite and hornblende), an unusual feature for Karoo basaltic rocks. Biotite and/or hornblende separates yielded statistically indistinguishable 40Ar/39Ar ages as plagioclase separates; indicating that the biotite and hornblende found within these samples are primary features requiring that water was present in the magma during the crystallization of those sills. Major and trace element geochemistry place these rocks into the low-Ti suite of the Karoo CFBs. Trace elements indicate the involvement of fluids over sediment within the source region for these Karoo magmas. All samples from the Western Cape Province display enriched Sr–Nd–Pb initial values with large variations in elemental concentrations for a restricted range of isotopic ratios. Assimilation models indicate these enriched isotopic contents and observed trends are not the result of crustal contamination and are representative of the composition of the source. The trace element and isotopic geochemistry as well as the primary hydrated minerals indicate that water present in the system at the time of formation came directly from one of the mantle sources, supporting the hypothesis that the SCLM was metasomatized by fluids plausibly as a result of the Proterozoic Kibaran Orogeny and/or the Permian Cape Orogeny. This first direct evidence of water within the mantle sources of tholeiitic CFBs, until now only theorized and modeled, potentially changes the fundamentals in how we approach our considerations of CFB generation as a whole. Complexly zoned microcrystals of uraninite were encountered in orthogneiss from the central Tauern Window in Austria (K1 gneiss, Felbertal scheelite mine) and analysed in-situ for U, Th and Pb with state-of-the-art FE-SEM/EDX techniques. A three times finer spatial resolution was achieved using an acceleration voltage of 8 kV, compared to the classic 15–20 kV set-up of U–Th–total Pb electron microprobe dating. The lower voltage allows a spheroid of material with a diameter of only 0.3 µm to be selectively analysed. Careful tests on three uraninite reference materials show that the low-voltage method yields sufficient precision and accuracy for U–Th–total Pb uraninite dating, with errors on individual spot ages in the order of 10–30 Ma. By means of this innovative analysis technique, small-scale age zoning patterns could be resolved and dated in the uraninite microcrystals from the orthogneiss. Based on microstructures observed in backscattered electron images we interpret that an older uraninite generation in the rock, with a late Permian formation age (~260 Ma), was recycled two times through a coupled dissolution–reprecipitation process at ~210 Ma and at ~30 Ma. The younger dissolution–reprecipitation phase at ~30 Ma coincides with the Alpine regional metamorphism (lower amphibolite facies). The two older ages (~210 Ma and ~260 Ma) have been previously recognized in rocks from the Tauern Window by uraninite dating, but it is the first time here that both are recorded in the same rock and even the same uraninite grain. The present study shows that recrystallized accessory uraninite can provide a sensitive geological "hard disk" where several discrete thermal events of an area are stored. Aim: We investigated whether the fossil‐rich and cosmopolitan buckthorn family (Rhamnaceae, dating back to the Cretaceous) was influenced by vicariance events following the Gondwanan breakup. To answer this question, we focused on the ziziphoid lineage of the buckthorn family, because extant ziziphoid taxa comprise tribes and genera exclusively or at least predominantly distributed in the Southern Hemisphere (Australia, Africa, and South America). Location: World‐wide. Methods: We generated a DNA alignment of 26,989 bp (from plastid, mitochondrial, and nuclear genomes), comprising 575 taxa of Rhamnaceae and related families, including all major lineages within Rhamnaceae and closely related families. We used nine internal fossils to set constraints in our molecular dating analyses. We used 'BioGeoBEARS' in R to reconstruct ancestral areas in order to infer the impact of vicariance events on the ziziphoids caused by Gondwanan fragmentation. Results: Our biogeographic analyses illustrate that the ziziphoid lineage was influenced by both long‐distance dispersal and Gondwanan breakup vicariance events. Yet, these vicariance events cannot explain all divergence events at the backbone of this lineage. Main conclusions: Our study highlights that a taxon's distribution throughout the Northern Hemisphere can be the result of vicariance, but this process may be obliterated by more recent long‐distance dispersal (LDD). Our study also highlights that sufficiently old taxa may sometimes constitute better models to investigate the impact of Gondwanan‐driven vicariance than taxa with a current disjunct distribution in the Southern Hemisphere. Sıcak Çermik (Sivas) is an important geothermal and recent travertine formation area in Central Anatolia. The majority of travertines found in the region comprise fissure-ridge type travertines according to morphological classification. At the location called Tepe Çermik within the travertine area, fill containing fossil bone fragments of Equus sp., Bovidae and other abundant animals formed within the fracture axis of a N-S striking fissure-ridge travertine developed under control of tectonic forces. The finds of these fossils in fissure-ridge travertines linked to tectonic forces indicates formation of a unique fossil environment created under the control of these forces. The Accelerator Mass Spectrometry Radiocarbon Dating analyses of fossils from the study area determined the fills were older than 43,000 years. The U/Th age of a sample from the most recently-formed banded travertine in the axis of the fracture was identified as 278,540 ± 18,436 years. As a result, the ages of fossils found within this fill are thought to be between 43,000 and 278,540 ± 18,436 years old. The high amount of perissodactyla and artiodactyla fossils found within fill in the axis of the fissure-ridge travertine probably indicates the presence of hominids who chose the region for hunting or settlement. The Equus sp. and Bovidae fossil samples found in the axis of the fracture indicate that in the dry and cold glacial period the paleogeography in a large portion of Anatolia comprised desert-like steppe. Precise time constraints of the main extrusive phase of the Emeishan large igneous province (ELIP) remain unresolved because basalts commonly do not contain suitable minerals for U-Pb dating, whereas previous 40Ar/39Ar studies on basalts yielded tectonothermal overprint ages. The timing for the ELIP was deduced from indirect dating of minor intrusions of ultramafic/mafic and felsic compositions by geochronological methods and geological correlations. The extrusive part of the ELIP consists of an older low-Ti and younger high-Ti basalt phases. We have found fresh samples of plagioclase-phyric rocks at the lower Qiaojia extrusive section (the Yunnan province of China), which belong to the ELIP unit of the high-Ti basalt series. 40Ar/39Ar dating on plagioclase from two samples conducted at two different laboratories using different age standards yielded statistically indistinguishable results with the weighted mean age of 260.1 ± 1.2 Ma for five individual measurements. This provides the direct constraints on the onset of the ELIP high-Ti basalt extrusive phase. The obtained age is within the error or slightly older than the age of the Guadalupian-Lopingian boundary and felsic ignimbrite capping the ELIP lava succession (both dated at 259.1 ± 0.5 Ma). Our new data are strengthening the short duration of the, at least, high-Ti phase of the ELIP volcanism and its temporal link with the end-Guadalupian mass extinction. Abstract: Petrological modelling of granulite‐facies mafic and semipelitic migmatites from Cairn Leuchan, northeast Scotland, has provided new constraints on the pressure (P) and temperature (T) conditions of high‐grade metamorphism in the type‐locality Barrow zones. Phase diagrams constructed in the Na2O–CaO–K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–O2 system have constrained the P−T conditions of peak metamorphism in the Glen Muick region of the upper sillimanite zone (Sill+Kfs) to have been at least ∼840°C at ∼9 kbar (high‐P granulite facies). These conditions are ∼120°C and ∼3 kbar higher than those recorded by lower sillimanite zone (Sill+Ms) units located only a few kilometres away to the southeast at Glen Girnock, indicating the presence of a significant thermal and barometric high exposed within the Scottish Dalradian, and supporting previous suppositions of a potential tectonic break between the two regions. U–Pb zircon geochronology performed on these mafic migmatites produced ages of c. 540–470 Ma from grains with both igneous and metamorphic morphological characteristics. Their basaltic protoliths likely formed during a period of volcanism dated at c. 570 Ma, associated with passive‐margin extension prior to the onset of Iapetus Ocean closure, and high‐grade metamorphism and partial melting is interpreted to have taken place at c. 470 Ma, synchronous with sillimanite‐grade metamorphism recorded elsewhere in the Dalradian. These high‐grade Cairn Leuchan lithologies are interpreted as representing a fragment of Grampian Terrane lower crust that was exhumed via displacement along a steeply dipping tectonic discontinuity related to the Portsoy–Duchray Hill Lineament, and are not pre‐Caledonian Mesoproterozoic basement, as suggested by some previous studies. Veins within some mafic migmatites in the Cairn Leuchan area, composed almost entirely (>80%) of garnet, with minor quartz, plagioclase, amphibole, and clinopyroxene, are interconnected with leucosomes and are interpreted to represent former garnet‐bearing melt segregations that have been locally drained of almost all melt. Thus, mafic components of the lower crust, currently underlying relatively lower grade metasediments exposed to the southeast, may represent a potential source rock for widely documented, post‐orogenic felsic plutons, sills, and dykes that occur throughout the Grampian Terrane. Abstract: This study presents Lu–Hf geochronology of zoned garnet in high‐P eclogites from the North Qilian orogenic belt. Selected samples have ~mm‐sized garnet grains that have been sampled with a micro‐drill and analysed for dating. The Lu–Hf dates of bulk garnet separates, micro‐drilled garnet cores and the remnant, rim‐enriched garnet were determined by two‐point isochrons, with cores being consistently older than the bulk‐ and rim‐enriched garnet. The bulk garnet separates of each sample define identical garnet–whole rock isochron date of c. 457 Ma. Consistent U–Pb zircon dates of 455 ± 8 Ma were obtained from the eclogite. The Lu–Hf dates of the drilled cores and rim‐rich separates suggest a minimum garnet growth interval of 468.9 ± 2.4 and 452.1 ± 1.6 Ma. Major and Lu element profiles in the majority of garnet grains show well‐preserved Rayleigh‐style fractionated bell‐shaped Mn and Lu zoning profiles, and increasing Mg from core to rim. Pseudosection modelling indicates that garnet grew along a P–T path from ~470–525°C and ~2.4–2.6 GPa. The exceptional high‐Mn garnet core in one sample indicates an early growth during epidote–blueschist facies metamorphism at <460°C and <0.8 GPa. Therefore, the Lu–Hf dates of drilled cores record the early prograde garnet growth, whereas the Lu–Hf dates of rim‐rich fractions provide a maximum age for the end of garnet growth. The microsampling approach applied in this study can be broadly used in garnet‐bearing rocks, even those without extremely large garnet crystals, in an attempt to retrieve the early metamorphic timing recorded in older garnet cores. Given a proper selection of the drill bit size and a detailed crystal size distribution analysis, the cores of the mm‐sized garnet in most metamorphic rocks can be dated to yield critical constraints on the early timing of metamorphism. This study provides new crucial constraints on the timing of the initial subduction (before c. 469 Ma) and the ultimate closure (earlier than c. 452 Ma) of the fossil Qilian oceanic basin. Laser ablation single/multiple collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-SC/MC-ICP-MS) has become one of the most widely used in situ micro-analytical tools for the determination of isotopic ratios and trace element signatures in solid geological materials. The advantages include high spatial resolution, high sample throughput, good precision and accuracy, and limited sample preparation. For the application of these techniques in U–Th–Pb geochronology, the main challenges involve ion counter drift, matrix differences between reference materials and samples, laser-induced downhole elemental fractionation and common lead corrections. Given the requirement to achieve the maximum amount of geochemical information within the limited analytical domain of complexly zoned or small samples, simultaneous analysis of multiple isotopic systems and/or trace elements using laser ablation split stream (LASS) techniques is now widely applied. This article summarizes recent advances in LA-SC/MC-ICP-MS U–Th–Pb geochronology and LASS techniques. We review recent efforts to improve spatial resolution, calibrate ion counter drift, and correct for common lead contamination, elemental fractionation and matrix mismatching. A summary of the range of minerals utilized for LA-MC-ICP-MS geochronology and LASS is provided, along with a discussion of potential directions for future research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The extensive aeolian deposits of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) represent important environmental archives, recording information about the past interplay between the Asian monsoon and Westerlies and the link between dust accumulation and Quaternary glaciations. In the northeast TP, mantles of sandy loess form a distinct belt lying between 3500 and 4500 m a.s.l. on the east‐facing slopes of the Anyemaqen Mountains. However, there is little chronological information about the loess deposits in this region. This study provides a detailed chronology for loess formation in the region using luminescence dating. A total of 29 samples were collected from an 8‐m‐thick homogeneous loess section at Hebei (HB) in order to date sand‐sized (63–90 μm) quartz and K‐feldspar fractions using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL and pIRIR) signals, respectively. The resulting quartz and feldspar ages are in good agreement over the last 40 ka; beyond this (i.e. De >120 Gy), the quartz age is underestimated, and the pIRIR170 feldspar ages are considered more reliable. The HB loess section records continuous environmental information from c. 50 to c. 30 ka, i.e. throughout Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 3. Mass accumulation rates (MARs) varied considerably over this period with increased dust accumulation around c. 38 ka and after c. 32 ka; in between, and at the beginning of MIS 3 (50–40 ka), the dust accumulation rate was ~50% lower. Finally, the HB section also records a MIS 2 hiatus of c. 17 ka duration, probably resulting from deflation. This study implies that loess deposition on the TP is predominantly an interglacial/interstadial phenomenon and the TP may be deflating at the same time as the Chinese Loess Plateau is accumulating, at least during MIS 2. The oldest rocks of the Rio Negro Province in the Amazonian Craton, have a complex evolutionary history and little known about them. In this paper are presented field, microtextural data, amphibole and plagioclase mineral chemistry, zircon U–Pb ages, and Sm–Nd isotope composition from Içana Domain basement rocks which belong to the Rio Negro Province. The studied area of the province is located in the extreme northwestern portion of Brazil (Amazonas State). The integration of the data obtained in this study allowed to propose the tectono-metamorphic evolution of Içana Domain in the Rio Negro Province. The basement rocks comprise orthogneiss and metagranite of the Cauaburi Complex and homogeneous/heterogeneous diatexite of the Taiuaçu–Cauera diatexite. The Cauaburi Complex rocks exhibit a predominantly porphyroclastic texture and has a mafic mineralogy constituted by biotite, amphibole, sphene, epidote, and allanite. On the other hand, Taiuaçu–Cauera diatexite varies from inequigranular to porphyroclastic, being constituted by biotite, muscovite, allanite, and epidote. Basement rocks of the Içana Domain record three tectonic–metamorphic events, which were associated to regional events. The M 1 /D 1 event was marked by the syn-tectonic emplacement of the Cauaburi Complex protolith rocks (1813 ± 19 Ma), and also by crystallization (1821 ± 14 Ma) and migmatization (1788 ± 11 Ma) of the Taiuaçu-Cauera diatexites in an orogenic event. The M 2 /D 2 event reached high temperatures, similar to the M 1 /D 1 event and was related to emplacement of S–type granites in the Içana Domain basement during the Içana Orogeny (ca. 1520 Ma). Furthermore, the lower temperature of the M 3 /D 3 event was related to intracontinental reworking of the K'Mudku event (ca. 1200 Ma). The Cauaburi Complex basement rocks shows epsilon Nd (t) values range from +1.53 to +0.13, which allow the identification of a crustal contribution to the magma source (likely Orosirian sialic crust). Geochemistry data indicate that these rocks have been generated from partial melting of amphibolitic rocks, and also with an important crustal component related to magmatic arc settings. All igneous (1967 ± 25 Ma) and metamorphic (1911 ± 15 Ma) zircons grains within the Cauaburi Complex basement rocks are compatible with those found in Tapajós-Parima/Ventuari–Tapajós Province, reinforcing the crustal contribution hypothesis. Geochemistry and mineralogical data indicate that Taiuaçu-Cauera diatexite was likely formed by the partial melting of the metagraywacke. Two age populations (1993 ± 33 and 1842 ± 9 Ma) from detrital zircon of the homogeneous diatexite, suggest that the sediments were derived from different rocks of the Tapajós-Parima/Ventuari–Tapajós Province. The age of the Taiuaçu-Cauera diatexite is probably between 1842 ± 9 Ma (youngest detrital zircon) and 1788 ± 11 Ma (anatectic zircon). The youngest detrital zircon (1842 ± 9 Ma) and anatectic zircons (1788 ± 11 Ma), indicates that the protolith of Taiuaçu-Cauera diatexite is not a part of the Tunuí basin (Tunuí Group). The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in NW Colombia is an isolated massif at the northernmost end of the Andes chain near the boundary with the Caribbean plate. Previous geologic mapping and K-Ar dating have shown that Jurassic plutonic and volcanic units make up a large part of the Santa Marta Massif (SMM). These rocks have been considered to be part of a Jurassic magmatic arc extending from NW Colombia to northern Chile, but without any geochemical basis for comparison. This paper reports on a geochemical and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope study of the Jurassic rocks in the SMM and provides 12 new U-Pb zircon ages from in-situ laser ICP-MS dating. The plutonic and volcanic units span a range from 45 to 78 wt.% SiO 2 , with a dominance of intermediate to felsic compositions with SiO 2 > 57 wt.%. They classify as calc-alkaline, medium to high-K, metaluminous rocks with trace-element features typical for arc-derived magma series. In terms of their major and trace-element compositions, the SMM Jurassic units overlap with contemporary plutonic and volcanic rocks from other regions of the Central and Eastern Cordilleras of Colombia, and confirm an arc affinity. The new U-Pb ages range from 176 ± 1 Ma to 192 ± 2 Ma (n = 12), with most between 180 and 188 Ma (n = 7). The initial Sr isotope ratios (at 180 Ma) are between 0.7012 and 0.7071 (n = 29), with 3 outliers attributed to mobilization of Rb and/or Sr. Nearly all samples have negative εNd (180) values between −10.3 and 0.0 (n = 30), the two exceptions being only slightly positive (1.1 and 1.9). Measured Pb isotope ratios fall in a narrow range, with 206 Pb/ 204 Pb from 18.02 to 19.95, 207 Pb/ 204 Pb from 15.56 to 15.67 and 208 Pb/ 204 Pb from 37.76 to 39.04 (n = 28). In the regional context of previous studies, these results confirm early Jurassic ages and an arc affinity for the widespread magmatism exposed in the eastern and northeastern Colombian Andes. We also note patterns in the distribution and composition of magmas. The magmatic activity in the Central Cordillera tends to be younger than in the Eastern Cordillera and is spatially more restricted to the vicinity of regional fault systems. In terms of composition, Jurassic igneous rocks in the Eastern Cordillera have systematically lower εNd (180) values than those from the Central Cordillera, whereas the Pb isotope ratios overlap. We ascribe the Nd isotope variations to heterogeneity in the mantle source and/or degree of crustal contamination, whereas the Pb isotope ratios are crust-dominated and similar throughout the region. The spatio-temporal and compositional evolution of Jurassic magmatic rocks in the Northern Andes reflect the major plate kinematic readjustment between the Triassic and the Early Jurassic in the proto-Andean margin. The Borborema Province is an important Precambrian orogenic system in Northeastern Brazil. It was formed during the assembly of Western Gondwana in the Brasiliano-Pan-African Orogeny. The Neoproterozoic Sergipano Belt is part of the Province and occupies a large area of its southern portion. Investigation of provenance and tectonic environment of the metavolcanic-sedimentary complexes in this belt are of regional amplitude and may reveal important aspects of the evolution of the province. In this study new whole-rock geochemistry, isotope Nd data and U-Pb geochronological data on detrital zircon of the metavolcanic-sedimentary Araticum Complex within the northeastern part of the Sergipano Belt, in order to contribute to the understanding the role of the Sergipano Belt in amalgamation of Western Gondwana. The related data indicate provenance from eroded island arcs and back-arc-relate settings during the Neoproterozoic. Detrital zircon grains indicate populations of Ediacaran-Cryogenian (ca. 660-620 Ma) and Tonian-Stenian ages (around ca. 1047 Ma) suggesting that source areas represent extinct volcanic arcs of the Pernambuco-Alagoas Domain to the north. Based on this study, it is suggested that sediments of the Araticum paleobasin were deposited in an oceanic environment during the arc exhumation over the Brasiliano-Pan African Orogeny, but also with strong contributions from Stenian island arcs, which are attributed to the Cariris Velhos Orogeny. Our results support that major supracrustal sequences of the Sergipano Fold Belt were deposited in the Neoproterozoic, such as indicated by previous studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Apatite is an accessory mineral that is frequently found in both igneous and clastic sedimentary rocks. It is conventionally considered to be characterized by a closure temperature range between 375 and 600 °C and hence has been employed to address mid-temperature thermochronology questions relevant to the reconstruction of thermal events in the middle to lower crust. However, questions remain as to whether apatite faithfully records thermally-activated volume diffusion profiles, or rather is influenced by recrystallization and new growth processes. We present a case study of two apatite samples from the Akia Terrane in Greenland that help chart some of the post magmatic history of this region. Apatite in a tonalitic gneiss has distinct U-enriched rims and its U-Pb apparent ages correlate with Mn chemistry, with a high Mn group yielding an age of c. 2813 Ma. The U-Pb and trace element chemistry and morphology support an interpretation in which these apatite crystals are originally igneous and record cooling after metamorphism, with subsequent generation of discrete new rims. Epidote observed in the sample implies a <600 °C fluid infiltration event associated with apatite rims. The second sample, from a granitic leucosome, contains apparently homogeneous apatite, however U-Pb analyses define two distinct discordia arrays with different common Pb components. An older, c. 2490 Ma, component is associated with elevated Sr, whereas a younger, c. 1800 Ma, component has lower Sr concentration. A depth profile reveals an older core with progressively younger ages towards a compositionally discrete late Paleoproterozoic rim. The chemical and age profiles do not directly correspond, implying different diffusion rates between trace elements and U and Pb. The variation in core ages is interpreted to reflect radiogenic-Pb loss from a metamorphic population during new rim growth. The younger, c. 1800 Ma U-Pb age is interpreted to date new apatite growth from a compositionally distinct reservoir driven by tectonothermal and fluid activity, consistent with regional mica Ar-Ar ages. Results from these two samples show that recrystallization, dissolution and regrowth processes likely formed the younger rim overgrowths, and at temperatures below those often considered to be closure temperatures for Pb diffusion in apatite. The results from these samples imply many apatite grains may not record simple thermally activated Pb diffusion profiles and cautions against inversion of apatite U-Pb data to thermal histories without detailed knowledge of the grain growth/alteration processes. Excavations in Hualongdong (HLD), East China, have yielded abundant hominin fossils dated to 300 ka. There is a nearly complete mandible that fits well with a partial cranium, and together they compose the skull labeled as HLD 6. Thus far, detailed morphological description and comparisons of the mandible have not been conducted. Here we present a comprehensive morphological, metric, and geometric morphometric assessment of this mandible and compare it with both adult and immature specimens of Pleistocene hominins and recent modern humans. Results indicate that the HLD 6 mandible exhibits a mosaic morphological pattern characterized by a robust corpus and relatively gracile symphysis and ramus. The moderately developed mental trigone and a clear anterior mandibular incurvation of the HLD 6 mandible are reminiscent of Late Pleistocene hominin and recent modern human morphology. However, the weak expression of all these features indicates that this mandible does not possess a true chin. Moreover, a suite of archaic features that resemble those of Middle Pleistocene hominins includes pronounced alveolar planum, superior transverse torus, thick corpus, a pronounced endocondyloid crest, and a well-developed medial pterygoid tubercle. The geometric morphometric analysis further confirms the mosaic pattern of the HLD 6 mandible. The combination of both archaic and modern human features identified in the HLD 6 mandible is unexpected, given its late Middle Pleistocene age and differs from approximately contemporaneous Homo members such as Xujiayao, Penghu, and Xiahe. This mosaic pattern has never been recorded in late Middle Pleistocene hominin fossil assemblages in East Asia. The HLD 6 mandible provides further support for the high morphological diversity during late Middle Pleistocene hominin evolution. With these findings, it is possible that modern human morphologies are present as early as 300 ka and earlier than the emergence of modern humans in East Asia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we describe gravity flow facies that form the base of the Meiji Reef system in the South China Sea, and discuss their palaeoclimate significance. These Early Oligocene (26.1–23.5 Myr) deposits occur in Well NK1 and comprise a 110.6 m thick succession developed on top of volcanic basement. The deposits can be divided into two intervals, both of which are dominated by debris flow facies. The lower 17.6 m thick interval has a gravel content of 50–65% with parent rocks including dacite, basalt, tuff, and coral reef fragments. From base to top, these units coarsen upward and show increasing gravel contents. Gravel clasts are well-rounded but poorly sorted (diameter 10–350 mm), which, together with their complex composition, indicate transportation by the gravity flows from the near-shore volcanic rock basement to the slope. The upper 93 m thick interval comprises abundant bioclastic materials, including benthic foraminifera, crustal red algae, and red algae detritus, with a few volcanic gravel clasts. The content of volcanic rock gravels decreases towards the top, which may be attributed to the reduction or disappearance of volcanic rocks in the provenance area due to the establishment of coral reef facies that cap the succession and dominate the overlying interval from a core depth of 885.6 m to the seafloor. Based on U-Pb dating, the cap-shaped red algae laminae at the facies transition were formed at 24.6 ± 1.1 Ma, dating the earliest initiation of reef building to end-Oligocene times. The emergence of gravity flow sediments during the early Oligocene may be attributed to the onset of the Antarctic glaciation and concurrent regional tectonic activities that led to a shallowing of the sea. The origin of debris with high roundness characteristics is believed to be associated with transportation along the slope triggered by tectonic and climatic events, resulting in the formation of debris flow deposits. Studying the gravity flow facies at the Meiji Reef system is crucial for determining the onset of reef-building and helps establish the relationship between gravity flow deposition, paleoclimate, and regional tectonic evolution in the South China Sea. • On the volcanic basement of Well NK1 in the South China Sea, unique gravity flow deposits with high roundness and low sorting are developed. • U-Pb dating of carbonate rocks shows that the gravity flow deposits were formed during the Oligocene with an age of 26.1–23.5 Ma, which are debris flow deposition. • U-Pb dating of carbonate rocks shows that the age of the cap-shaped red algae laminae around the gravels are formed at 24.6 ± 1.1 Ma, which is the earliest initiation time of reef building in the Cenozoic. • The emergence of gravity flow deposits during the Early Oligocene is an important sedimentary response to a series of events, including global ice age events, regional tectonic activities, and fluctuations in sea level. The region of Wallacea has become a hotspot of archaeological research due to significant new discoveries that are changing our understanding and theories about early human history. Anatomically modern humans (AMH) began to migrate and expand to Wallacea and Sahul in Oceania over 45,000 years ago, making this one of the earliest regions with a presence of AMH outside of Africa. Additionally, Sulawesi, the largest island in Wallacea, has yielded the oldest dates for rock paintings worldwide at around 44,000 years ago, predating rock art discovered in Europe. While U-series dating has been used to determine the early rock art, no 14C dates over 40,000 years ago had been reported from Sulawesi, so far. However, in our latest excavation at Goa Topogaro in Central Sulawesi, we obtained 14C dates that support the presence and spread of AMH in Sulawesi by at least 40,000 years ago, if not earlier. The Topogaro cave complex also yielded significant amounts of archaeological remains from various periods during the Late Pleistocene and Holocene, as well as from historical times. Here, we present the major findings of our archaeological research in Goa Topogaro on the eastern coast of Sulawesi and discuss the evidence and timeline for the migration of AMH into Sulawesi Island and their adaptation to the insular environments of Wallacea during the late Pleistocene and Holocene. Radiocarbon dating of fossil pollen concentrates has the potential to reduce limitations for sample selection in chronological studies of sedimentary archives. The recent development of the technology for rapidly preparing highly purified fossil pollen concentrates using a cell sorter makes it realistic to turn this dream into reality. Before utilizing pollen as a material for dating with confidence, however, it is necessary to understand the factors that may affect the result of the measurements, and to establish criteria to assess the reliability of the radiocarbon ages produced. In this study, peat soils which are commercially available in large quantities, and are hence used as our laboratory standard, as well as the varved lacustrine sediments from Lake Suigetsu, which has one of the best terrestrial radiocarbon stratigraphies in the world, were used to assess the accuracy of radiocarbon ages of pollen concentrates and to establish an appropriate protocol for sample preparation. A pollen-rich fraction prepared by a recently proposed combined method of physio-chemical pre-treatment and cell sorter (Yamada et al. 2021) was submitted to a range of different posterior treatments and radiocarbon measurement. The results were also compared with SEM (Scanning Electron Microscoic) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopic observations. It was discovered that the sample prepared by the initial pre-treatment and cell sorter were not sufficiently pure and did not yield radiocarbon ages that were consistent with the terrestrial leaf fossils. Instead, the Acid-Base-Acid treatment with ultrafiltration following on from the cell sorter step proved to be highly effective in the removal of contaminants and improve the measured ages. The comparison with Suigetsu's terrestrial radiocarbon dataset also indicated that accuracy could be improved through closer assessment using the pollen taxa composition, carbon content (%C), and stable isotope ratios (δ13C) of the pollen concentrates. The age-depth models established by the radiocarbon dating of fossil pollen grains extracted from the Suigetsu sediments agree very well with that of plant macrofossils, and even improve the precision of the combined model. As long as handling was appropriate, the pollen concentrates prepared by the cell sorter provide reliable radiocarbon ages and the method can significantly contribute to Quaternary sciences in the future. Abstract A next-generation, high-flux DD neutron generator has been designed, commissioned, and characterized, and is now operational in a new facility at the University of California Berkeley. The generator, originally designed for 40Ar/39Ar dating of geological materials, has since served numerous additional applications, including medical isotope production studies, with others planned for the near future. In this work, we present an overview of the High Flux Neutron Generator (HFNG) which includes a variety of simulations, analytical models, and experimental validation of results. Extensive analysis was performed in order to characterize the neutron yield, flux, and energy distribution at specific locations where samples may be loaded for irradiation. A notable design feature of the HFNG is the possibility for sample irradiation internal to the cathode, just 8 mm away from the neutron production site, thus maximizing the neutron flux (n/cm 2 /s). The generator’s maximum neutron flux at this irradiation position is 2.58 × 10 7 n/cm 2 /s ± 5% (approximately 3 × 10 8 n/s total yield) as measured via activation of small natural indium foils. However, future development is aimed at achieving an order of magnitude increase in flux. Additionally, the deuterium ion beam optics were optimized by simulations for various extraction configurations in order to achieve a uniform neutron flux distribution and an acceptable heat load. U-Pb geochronology requires knowledge of a precise and accurate value for the 238 U/ 235 U ratio of any mineral or material being dated by this method. It is now well established that the long-accepted value of 137.88 is not representative of most terrestrial materials and that the ratio is variant both between and within samples. As most samples used for chronology have insufficient amounts of U to determine a precise isotopic composition, the U-Pb geochronology community has informally adopted the recommended value of 137.818 ± 0.045 based on a single data set of 44 zircons by Hiess et al. (2012). To evaluate the robustness of this value and the true range of U isotopic compositions in U-bearing minerals, we have measured the U isotopic composition of 28 bulk zircon samples as well as several co-existing accessory minerals from rocks with a wide range of ages and geographical distributions. The 238 U/ 235 U ratio of 137.817 ± 0.031 represents the mid-point value of our data with an uncertainty that includes all 28 zircon populations analyzed and their respective uncertainties. This value is indistinguishable from the previously recommended value but with a smaller uncertainty that may reflect the refined analytical methods employed in our study. This result provides confidence to the U-Pb geochronology community that the value recommended by Hiess et al. (2012) is appropriate and that their stated uncertainty appears to be conservative. We find variability in the 238 U/ 235 U ratio of coexisting phases within single samples of up to 2.9 ε-units (parts per 10,000). In addition, our range of U isotopic compositions for zircon is heavier than that reported for bulk continental crust in general and most granitoid intrusive rocks specifically. We attribute these observations to differences in the coordination environment of U in zircon and other U-bearing phases. With the amount of zircon formed in magmatic systems limited by the abundance of Zr, we estimate that the majority of U in granitoid rocks must reside in other phases with a bulk isotopic composition that represents a lighter complement to that of zircon. Zircon has been widely used as a geochronometer with the U–Pb decay system but rarely with the Th–Pb system. However, zircon from carbonatite contains very little U and has a high Th/U ratio, making Th–Pb dating preferable. As a one-dimensional system, a series of consistent Th–Pb ages can be used to date a geological event. In contrast, a wide variation in Th–Pb ages could result from Pb loss or multiple growth events, making it difficult to link to specific geological events. In this study, we described Th–Pb dating protocols on zircon and carried out Th–Pb measurements on seven zircon reference materials using a Cameca IMS 1280HR ion microprobe. The results demonstrated that these seven U–Pb zircon standards have similar absolute concentrations of common lead. The radiogenic 208Pb concentrations (depending on the Th content and age) determine the proportion of common lead and define the extent of variation in the Th–Pb system under certain analytical conditions. This relationship could be used as a criterion to evaluate whether it is a single population or not based on Th–Pb dating results of unknown zircons. By comparison, M257 and Qinghu zircons are suggested as the most suitable Th–Pb dating standards, with ID-TIMS U–Pb ages representing the best estimate of the Th–Pb reference ages. A zircon sample from the Wu dyke, an extremely rare earth element (REE)-rich carbonatite dyke in the Bayan Obo area, was dated with the established Th–Pb dating procedure and yielded an age of 1327 ± 20 Ma as the emplacement time. A pronounced relationship between apparent Th–Pb ages and corresponding Th contents (＞1500 ppm) indicates that zircons with accumulated radiogenic doses of ＞1.7 × 1018α per g may tend to lose radiogenic 208Pb. This paper presents new zircon LA-ICP-MS U-Pb ages and whole-rock geochemical data for two granitic plutons and rhyolites of the Baiyingaolao Formation in the western Xing’an range (NE China). The two syenogranite granitic plutons yield identical zircon U-Pb age of 142 ± 1 Ma, and the Baiyingaolao rhyolites yield zircon U-Pb age of 138 ± 2 Ma. The granites contain some hornblendes, and show low Zr and Zr + Nb + Ce + Y contents, and low A/CNK (0.98-1.11), Mg# (6-55), and FeOT/MgO values. Rhyolite samples show similar geochemical characteristics with A/CNK of 0.99-1.10 and Mg# of 14-21. In combination with the high K2O contents (4.43-5.61 wt%) and negative correlations between P2O5 and SiO2, both the granites and rhyolites were classified as high-K calc-alkaline I-type granitoids. All samples give high zirconium saturation temperature of 794-964 °C with few initially inherited zircons, and belong to high-temperature I-type granitoids. They were generated by dehydration melting of biotite/muscovite from sub-alkaline meta-basalts in lower crust depth, leaving garnet, amphibole, and plagioclase as the major residual minerals. The syenogranites and rhyolites are likely formed in Mongol-Okhotsk oceanic subduction setting. Incorporating other lower crust-originated felsic rocks in Erguna and Xing’an massifs and Songliao basin, it is argued that lower crustal reworking is pronounced in NE China during Early Cretaceous. The geochemistry, geochronology, and isotope geochemical systematics (Nd, Sr, Hf, and Pb) of the granitoids of the Pozdnestanovoy complex of the Dzhugdzhur-Stanovoy superterrane of the Central Asia fold belt were investigated. It was shown that their age is Mesozoic (142-138 Ma) rather than Early Precambrian, as was previously supposed. The main sources of parental melts for these granitoids were the Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic rocks of the lower continental crust of the Dzhugdzhur-Stanovoy superterrane and the rocks of the Late Paleozoic-Early Mesozoic continental crust of the Amur microplate. They were formed at depths of >40 km and temperatures of 700-800°C, most likely through the melting of mafic feldspar granulites under the conditions of aqueous fluid infiltration without any significant contribution from a juvenile heat source. The granitoids of the Pozdnestanovoy complex were emplaced during the closure of the eastern segment of the Mongolia-Okhotsk Ocean owing to the collision of the Siberian and Sino-Korean continents. Previous studies have shown that radiometric dating of fossils can be complicated by post-fossilisation alteration. A key challenge to obtaining geologically meaningful fossilisation dates in bioapatite is identifying regions that have remained relatively undisturbed since the time of fossilisation. In order to determine whether a geochemical indicator can be used to identify least-disturbed regions, we combine in situ trace element analysis and U-Pb geochronology of fossil teeth from the Arroyo Chijuillita Member, New Mexico, and the Dinosaur Park Formation, Alberta. The reliability of these U-Pb dates is supported by good agreement between the isotope dilution thermal ionization mass spectrometry (61.5 ± 1.6 Ma) and laser ablation ICP-MS (64.2 ± 2.4 Ma) dates for a targeted tooth region. Of fourteen teeth analyzed from these units, two record dates within uncertainty of the depositional age: one has a “diffusion” concave upward cross-sectional yttrium profile, the other a concave downward profile reflective of trace element loss. It was found for teeth from both units that smaller yttrium concentration ranges are correlated with younger U-Pb dates, likely the result of post-fossilisation alteration. A yttrium screen based on this relationship is proposed, and is found to be a better indicator of post-fossilisation open system behaviour in the samples analyzed than other geochemical features thought to be produced during fossilisation. Limited chronological information for Upper Jurassic rocks hampers precise age assignment of the Jurassic-Cretaceous (J/K) boundary. This study presents Re-Os geochronology, Rock-Eval pyrolysis and geochemical data for Upper Jurassic rocks in the Nordland VII area, offshore northern Norway. Four intervals of organic-rich shale were investigated, two from the Krill and one from the Alge Member of the Hekkingen Formation and one from the underlying Måsnykan Formation (drilled cores 6814/04/U-01 and 6814/04/U-02). Rock-Eval pyrolysis data indicate immature organic matter with mixed (Type II/III) oil-gas potential in these units. Among the four intervals, Re-Os isochroneity prevails only for the Hekkingen Formation samples; data from the shale interval in the otherwise sand-rich Måsnykan Formation, deposited in a shoreface-to-foreshore marine environment, are not isochronous. Non-isochroneity of the samples from relatively proximal setting is attributable to non-conservative elemental (desorption of Os from sediments to dissolved phase) and isotopic exchange of Os at this depositional site. The Re-Os isochron age for the Alge Member (153.2 ± 7.3 Ma (Model 3); MSWD = 29; n  = 9) is consistent with its biostratigraphic Kimmeridgian age (152.1–157.3 Ma). A Re-Os isochron for the lower part of the Krill Member yields an age of 144.5 ± 1.4 Ma (Model 3; MSWD = 3.7; n  = 10) with an initial 187 Os/ 188 Os ratio of 0.552 ± 0.007. Given the interval's lower Tithonian biostratigraphic age, the Re-Os age suggests that the J/K boundary must be a few Myr younger than its currently assigned age of ~145.0 Ma (2017/02 time scale; www.stratigraphy.org ). A Re-Os model age for shales from the upper part of the Krill Member places an upper age limit for the J/K boundary at 142 (±2) Ma. Hence, the J/K boundary is between 142 Ma and 144.5 Ma. Fe and S concentrations for the Hekkingen Formation show strong correlation and the S/Fe slope (~1.19) mimics the stoichiometric S/Fe ratio for pyrite (~1.15). A Fe-S-TOC ternary diagram for these samples points to an iron-limiting, sulphidic depositional environment. Anoxic to sulphidic depositional conditions for the Hekkingen shales are also evident from relatively higher authigenic enrichment of Mo compared to U. Unlike the Hekkingen Formation, shales from the more sandy Måsnykan Formation have lower S/Fe ratios and lower enrichment factors for redox-sensitive elements, indicating relatively oxygenated marine conditions during deposition. Abstract: The low‐temperature thermal history of the Holy Cross Mountains (HCM) is investigated by apatite fission track and apatite and zircon (U–Th)/He thermochronology. Our results provide constraints on the deformation history of Palaeozoic basement rocks in the transition area from Precambrian to Palaeozoic Europe that are exposed from beneath Permian–Mesozoic sediments within the HCM. Late to post‐Variscan cooling of the Palaeozoic strata from maximum temperatures is shown to be a major feature of the HCM. This cooling likely followed a heating event related to burial and/or hot fluid circulation along the Holy Cross Fault in the late Carboniferous. The central part of the HCM shows a rapid cooling event caused by tectonic inversion, which started in the Late Cretaceous. However, this event was less pronounced in the western margin of the HCM, where slow cooling continued throughout the Mesozoic with only minor acceleration of the cooling rate since the latest Cretaceous. Galveston Bay is the second largest estuary along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast, with a watershed containing one of largest concentrations of petroleum and chemical industries globally, as well as Houston, the fifth largest metropolitan area in the USA. Throughout the last century, extensive groundwater extraction to support these industries and an expanding population has resulted in significantly enhanced land subsidence (0.6–3.0 cm yr −1 ). The highest subsidence rates observed in the bay are within the lower 15 km of the San Jacinto River/Houston Ship Channel region (SJR/HSC), with distal areas in East and West Galveston Bays having subsidence rates on the order of 0.2 cm yr −1 . In order to investigate the impacts of subsidence on sedimentation, a series of 22 vibracores were collected throughout the bay, and 210 Pb and 137 Cs radioisotope geochronologies and grain size distributions were determined. Sediment accumulation rates are highest (1.9 ± 0.5 cm yr −1 ) in the SJR/HSC, and decrease (<0.6 cm yr −1 ) both seaward and towards low subsidence regions. These results indicate sedimentation rates are significantly (p < 0.01) higher in areas with elevated Relative Sea Level Rise (RSLR). However, throughout most of Galveston Bay sedimentation rates are lower (as much as 50%) than estimated RSLR, indicating a sediment accretionary deficit. In areas (e.g., Scott Bay) within the SJR/HSC, the bay has deepened by more than 1.5 m, suggesting that sediment accumulation cannot keep pace with RSLR. Ultimately, this has resulted in a loss of coastal wetlands and a conversion of marine habitats from relatively shallow to deeper water settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The southern Midyan terrane is a composite Tonian to Ediacaran tectonostratigraphic crustal block in the northern Arabian Shield that prior to Red Sea opening was contiguous with coeval rocks in the Eastern Desert of Egypt and Sinai. Ion microprobe (sensitive high-resolution ion microprobe [SHRIMP]) dating of 12 rock samples described here and the results of other dating programmes establish a clear timeframe for depositional, intrusive, and structural events in the region and provide a chronology of tectonism in this part of the Arabian-Nubian Shield. Deposition of Zaam and Bayda group volcanosedimentary rocks and emplacement of mafic-ultramafic complexes and TTG-type diorite, tonalite, and granodiorite denote formation of the Tonian (780-715 Ma) Zaam arc and fore-arc ophiolite above a possible west-dipping subduction system in the southern part of the Midyan terrane. Convergence with the Hijaz terrane farther south and obduction of ophiolite nappes resulted by ~700 Ma in development of the Yanbu suture. Ongoing or a new subduction system led to a ~705-660 Ma Cryogenian pulse of magmatism represented by I-type calc-alkaline diorite, granodiorite, and granite that have volcanic-arc and syn-collisional granite affinities. This was followed, after a brief end-Cryogenian hiatus, by a 635-~570 Ma period of Ediacaran magmatism marked by monzogranite, syenogranite, and minor gabbro and diorite. These rocks are reported to have within-plate to volcanic-arc and syncollision chemical characteristics but their precise tectonic setting is uncertain. Structurally, the intrusions are diapiric and were evidently emplaced in an extensional regime consistent with an overlap between intrusion and Najd faulting associated, at this time, with transpressional collision and northward extension through much of the ANS. Terminal magmatism in the southern Midyan terrane postdated cessation of Najd faulting at ~575 Ma and resulted in the emplacement of undeformed within-plate A-type alkali-feldspar granites and mafic (lamprophyre) and felsic dikes. The results of geochronological (U-Pb), isotope-geochemical (Lu-Hf), and geochemical (REEs) studies of young (MZ, KZ) and xenogenic (AR, PR) zircons from magmatic rocks of the Central Arctic rises of the Arctic Ocean (AO) and the crest zone of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR) are presented. The data obtained show that the depleted mantle could be a source of young (KZ) zircons of the MAR, whereas young (MZ) zircons of the MAR and all xenogenic (AR, PR) zircons of the AO and MAR are from crustal rocks of the continental lithosphere.
