The neuropathology of mood disorders, including the diagnostic transition from major depressive disorder (MDD) to bipolar disorder (BD), is poorly understood. This study investigated resting-state electroencephalography (EEG) activity in patients with MDD and those whose diagnosis changed from MDD to BD. Among sixty-eight enrolled patients with MDD, the diagnosis of 17 patients converted to BD during the study period. We applied machine learning techniques to differentiate the two groups using sensor- and source-level EEG features. At the sensor level, patients with BD showed higher theta band power at the AF3 channel and low-alpha band power at the FC5 channel compared to patients with MDD. At the source level, patients with BD showed higher theta band activity in the right anterior cingulate and low-alpha band activity in the left parahippocampal gyrus. These four EEG features were selected for discriminating between BD and MDD with the best classification performance showing an accuracy of 80.88%, a sensitivity of 76.47%, and a specificity of 82.35%. Our findings revealed distinct theta and low-alpha band activities in patients with BD and MDD. Background: Youth mental health is a growing concern in research, practice, and policy. Practice standards, guidelines, or strategies provide an invisible infrastructure that fosters equity, quality, and safety, potentially addressing inconsistencies and more effectively attending to the mental wellness of Black youth as a particular population of concern. This scoping review aimed to address the following question: What standards exist for the delivery of mental health services to Black youth in community, primary care, and educational settings? Due to a limited initial search yield on publications about standards for the delivery of mental health services for Black youth population, our goal was then to identify and map mental health standards, recommendations, or guidelines for the delivery of mental health services using the same settings to all youth. Methods: Searches were conducted in various databases, including PubMed/MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Embase, SocINDEX, CINAHL, Gender Studies Database, Social Services Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Screening was independently conducted by two reviewers, with disagreements resolved by a third. Information extraction was performed by two independent reviewers. Results: Out of the 2,701 screened publications, 54 were included in this scoping review. Among them, 38.9% were published between 2020 and 2023, with 40.7% originating from the United States of America, 20.4% from the United Kingdom, and 13% from Canada. Concerning the settings, 25.9% of the publications focused on primary care, 24.1% on health care services, 20.4% on educational settings, and 3.7% on the community. Additionally, 25.9% were classified as general because recommendations were applicable to various settings. Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (11.1%) was the most frequently considered specific condition, followed by autism spectrum disorder (9.3%) and depression (9.3%). However, 31.5% of the included references addressed mental health in general. Only three references provided specific recommendations for the Black population. Conclusions: Recommendations, guidelines, or standards for Black youth mental health services in community, primary care, or educational settings are scarce and limited to North American countries. This scoping review emphasizes the need to consider ethnicity when developing guidelines or standards to improve racial equity and reduce disparities in access to mental health services. Research shows the impact of cultural stressors (e.g. perceived discrimination, bicultural stressors, negative context of reception) on adolescents' psychosocial outcomes. Given the presence of multiple cultural stressors in many Hispanic adolescents' lives, it is essential to examine the (a) developmental sequencing of cultural stressors among recent immigrant youth and (b) predictive effects of cultural stressors on adolescents' psychosocial outcomes. We employed a random intercept cross‐lagged panel model to examine the longitudinal interplay among cultural stressors and their effects on youth outcomes using longitudinal data with six waves among 302 recently immigrated Hispanic adolescents (47% girls, Mage = 14.51, SD = .88). We observed bidirectional within‐person relations and between‐person associations among cultural stressors. At the within‐person level, bidirectional cross‐lagged effects emerged between perceived discrimination and bicultural stress, between perceived discrimination and negative context of reception, and between negative context of reception and bicultural stress. At the between‐person level, bidirectional cross‐lagged effects emerged only between perceived discrimination and bicultural stressors. Our findings indicate that cultural stressors explain heterogeneity in psychosocial outcomes: self‐esteem was inversely predicted by all cultural stressors, whereas depressive symptoms were predicted only by perceived discrimination. In addition, optimism was predicted only by bicultural stressors, and externalizing behavior was predicted by both bicultural stressors and perceived discrimination. These results suggest that the longitudinal relationships among cultural stressors are (partly) bidirectional. Additionally, cultural stressors demonstrated differential predictive effects on psychosocial outcomes, indicating the added value of considering multiple cultural stressors and their longitudinal effects on adolescents' psychosocial outcomes. Assess the changes in post‐traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), burnout, anxiety, depression, jobstrain, and isostrain levels over time among healthcare workers in emergency departments (EDs) after successive outbreaks of COVID‐19. A prospective, multicenter study was conducted in 3 EDs and an emergency medical service. Healthcare workers who participated in our previous study were invited to participate in a follow‐up 16 and 18 months and completed the questionnaires to assess symptoms of PTSD, burnout, anxiety, depression, jobstrain, and isostrain. Among the 485 healthcare workers asked to participate, 211 (43.5%) completed the survey at inclusion (122 were followed up at 3 months) and 59 participate to the follow‐up study. At 16 months, 10.9% of healthcare workers had symptoms of PTSD and 17.4% at 18 months. At inclusion, 33.5% and 11.7% of healthcare workers had symptoms of anxiety and depression, respectively. A decrease in anxiety between inclusion and 16 months (p = 0.02) and an increase between 16 and 18 months (p = 0.009) was observed. At inclusion, 40.8% of all healthcare workers had symptoms of burnout. There was an increase in symptoms of burnout between inclusion and 18 months (p = 0.006). At inclusion, 43.2% and 29.5% of healthcare workers were exposed to jobstrain and isostrain, respectively. Jobstrain were higher among paramedics and administrative staff compared to physicians (p = 0.001 and p = 0.026, respectively). Successive outbreaks of COVID‐19 led to long‐term mental health consequences among ED healthcare workers that differed according to occupation. Introduction: Discriminating bipolar disorder (BD) from major depressive disorder (MDD) remains a challenging clinical task. Identifying specific peripheral biosignatures that can differentiate between BD and MDD would significantly increase diagnostic accuracy. Dysregulated neuroplasticity is implicated in BD and MDD, and psychotropic medications restore specific disrupted processes by increasing neurotrophic signalling. The nerve growth factor inducible vgf gene (non-acronymic) encodes a precursor protein named proVGF, which undergoes proteolytic processing to produce several VGF peptides, some of which were suggested to be implicated in mood disorders and have antidepressant effects. Since the presence of VGF peptides in humans has been exclusively investigated in brain and cerebrospinal fluid, we aimed to identify which VGF peptides are present in the plasma and to investigate whether their levels could differentiate BD from MDD as well as responders from non-responders to pharmacological interventions. Methods: VGF peptides were investigated in plasma from patients diagnosed with MDD (n = 37) or BD (n = 40 under lithium plus n = 29 never exposed to lithium), as well as healthy controls (HC; n = 36). Results: Three VGF peptides (TLQP-11, AQEE-14, and NAPP-19) were identified using spectrometry analysis of plasma from HC. These peptides were then measured in the entire sample using ELISA, which showed significantly lower levels of AQEE and NAPP in BD than in HC and MDD (p = 5.0 × 10−5, p = 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: Our findings suggest that lower plasma levels of NAPP and AQEE are specifically associated with BD, thus possibly representing a diagnostic biomarker in mood disorders. Objective: To describe the profile of individuals with depression who received assistance at CAPS in Brazil between 2013 and 2019, focusing on their clinical and demographic characteristics, and to calculate the estimated coverage of CAPS across the national territory and its constituent federal units. Methods: Descriptive, ecological, time-series study with secondary data from national databases, referring to care provided at CAPS in the country for adults aged 18 years or over-diagnosed with depression (F32-32.9 and F33-F33.9). The estimated coverage of CAPS was calculated for 2013 and 2019 using registered and active services. Results: There was a 107% increase in the number of patients with depression receiving treatment at CAPS between 2013 and 2019. Women accounted for 77% of the patients, with the majority falling within the age range of 41 to 61years (49%). The predominant racial demographics were white (38%) and brown (34%). The diagnosis of depressive episodes was prevalent among 65% of the patients, and individual care was administrated to 75% of them. The presumed CAPS coverage was 71% in 2013 and increased to 87% in 2019 nationwide, although significant discrepancies were observed among different states. Conclusion: Progress was evident in the implementation of CAPS across Brazil during the period spanning 2013 to 2019. Following on from our pilot studies, this study aimed to test the efficacy of a combination of probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium bifidum, Streptococcus thermophilus), magnesium orotate and coenzyme 10 for the treatment of major depressive disorder (MDD) through a double-blind placebo controlled clinical trial. The participants were 120 adults diagnosed with MDD randomised to daily oral administration, over 8 weeks, of either the intervention or placebo, with a 16-week follow-up period. Intent-to-treat analysis found a significantly lower frequency of the presence of a major depressive episode in the intervention group compared with placebo at the end of the 8-week treatment phase, with no difference between the two conditions at 8-week follow-up. Both the categorical and continuous measure of depressive symptoms showed a significant difference between the two conditions at 4 weeks, but not 8 and 16 weeks. The secondary end-point was demonstrated with an overall reduction in self-rated symptoms of anxiety and stress in the active treatment group compared with placebo. These findings suggest that the combination of probiotics, magnesium orotate and coenzyme 10 may be an effective treatment of MDD over an 8-week period. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and aim: Digital interventions for depression and anxiety can be as effective as face-to-face therapy. One in six workers experience some form of mental health problems, making the workplace a potential avenue to deliver mental health interventions as part of a stepped care model. This study aimed to assess the acceptability, feasibility, and preliminary efficacy of a digital cognitive behavioural therapy (dCBT) on depression and anxiety for employees in the workplace. Methods: A mixed-methods evaluation of employees allocated to dCBT (n=25), or a waitlist control group (n=27) was used to assess five feasibility objectives related to recruitment of employers and employees, engagement, study procedure and preliminary efficacy of the intervention. Quantitative outcome measures and qualitative interviews at 8 weeks post-randomisation were used. Quantitative outcomes were also assessed within subject at 3-, 6-, and 12-month follow-up. Qualitative data was analysed using thematic and framework analysis in Nvivo, whilst quantitative outcomes were analysed using mixed effect linear models between and within subject in R and SPSS. Results: Thirty-Three businesses agreed to facilitate the delivery of three trials run by the University of Warwick in their workplaces. 52 participants consented into the REST trial. Adherence/usage of participants of the treatment platform was just over 50% across the whole sample. There was a reduction in depression and anxiety symptoms post-intervention and at follow-up timepoints across all participants and over time although there were no statistically significant between group differences. High acceptability and satisfaction of the intervention were reported by participants based on qualitative interview data at post-intervention. Conclusions: Results from this feasibility study suggests that the dCBT programme (REST) was acceptable and shows improvement in depression and anxiety symptoms, albeit not over and above the treatment effects in the control group. Recruitment of participants and engagement with the intervention made the feasibility of the delivery somewhat challenging. With better recruitment promotion and engagement strategies, as well as implementing the learnings from the feasibility trial, a fully powered study can inform the efficacy of the REST intervention. AbstractMental pain is a core symptom of bereavement, yet its study with grief pathologies is still scarce. Mental pain acceptance may also affect the associations between mental pain, grief pathologies, and post-loss growth (PLG). The current study aims to investigate the associations between mental pain, mental pain acceptance, and post-loss outcomes in a sample of young widow(er)s. 257 young Israeli widow(er)s completed questionnaires assessing mental pain, mental pain acceptance, depression, complicated grief (CG), suicidal risk and PLG. Paths analyses revealed that depression mediated the positive associations between mental pain and suicidal risk and CG, and mental pain acceptance moderated the positive association between mental pain and depression. Mental pain acceptance also moderated the negative association between mental pain and PLG. The study’s findings highlight the crucial role of mental pain and mental pain acceptance in the associations between adverse and favorable post-loss outcomes among bereaved individuals. Background: Migraine affects one in ten individuals worldwide and is the second leading cause of disability. Studies have shown an association between migraine and the musculoskeletal system, and myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) play an essential role. Additionally, those with myofascial pain have been proven to experience higher levels of depression and anxiety. Understanding the association between MTrPs and migraine is crucial for developing targeted treatment strategies. Additionally, recognizing the link between MTrPs and migraine-related depression and anxiety underscores the importance of a holistic approach to migraine management. By addressing both musculoskeletal and neurological factors, healthcare providers can provide more effective and personalized care for migraine patients. This study aims to determine the association between MTrPs with migraine-related disability, anxiety, depression, and migraine characteristics. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 68 migraine patients from an outpatient neurology clinic. The number of MTrPs was determined through examination by an experienced neurologist during a migraine-free period using the recommended international criteria. We evaluated anxiety and depression with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and disability with the Migraine Disability Assessment Scale (MIDAS). Results: We enrolled 68 patients (22 males) with a mean age of 36.23 ± 9.63 years. The mean number of MTrPs was 2.75 ± 2.934. MTrPs were positively correlated with severity (CC: 0.576, P-value < 0.001). There was no association between MTrPs and HADS-D or MIDAS, but migraine patients with abnormal HADS-A scores had more MTrPs than patients with normal HADS-A scores (0.6 ± 0.84 vs 3.56 ± 3.11, P-value:0.013). Conclusions: The number of MTrPs is associated with higher anxiety levels and headache intensity. Objective: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is often accompanied by psychotic symptoms. However, few studies have examined the relationship between psychotic symptoms and endocrine factors in adolescent patients with MDD. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and related endocrine clinical factors of psychotic symptoms in Chinese adolescent patients with MDD. Methods: In total, 601 patients (aged 12–18) with MDD were recruited. The Patient Health Questionnaire – 9 items (PHQ – 9) was utilized for assessing depressive symptoms. Psychotic symptoms were assessed through clinical interviews. Prolactin (PRL), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3), free triiodothyronine (FT3), thyroxine (T4), and free thyroxine (FT4) were also measured. Results: The incidence of psychotic symptoms in adolescent patients with MDD was 22.6%. The findings demonstrated that age, self-harming behavior, PHQ-9 score, FT4, and normalized PRL were independently associated with psychotic symptoms in patients with MDD (All p < 0.05). Conclusions: PRL and FT4 levels are more likely to be abnormally elevated in major depressive adolescents with psychotic symptoms. ABSTRACT Waves of psychological research over 50 years have resulted in the development of scales to measure psychological resilience. Multiple psychological resilience definitions and factors have emerged during this time, making its measurement complex. The overall aim of the review was to identify and describe developments in the measurement of psychological resilience in the clinical mental healthcare setting. Specific objectives included (1) consideration of the validity and reliability of psychological resilience scales, (2) the effectiveness of the scales in clinical mental healthcare settings and (3) to identify the scope that resilience factors are addressed in the included scales. It provides a timely update regarding psychological resilience measurement tools and considers further developments that may be required. Between 2011 and 2024, databases were searched, and English‐language, peer‐reviewed papers with full text were extracted. Eligible studies were those reporting validated existing resilience measures or the outcomes of new measures for use in clinical mental healthcare settings. Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria. The review demonstrated that psychological resilience measures require further development, particularly focusing on the utility of measurement tools in clinical mental healthcare settings. In this review, we highlight an existing gap in resilience measurement and underscore the need for a new measure of psychological resilience that can effectively assess individuals' subjective experience of their psychological resilience in clinical mental healthcare settings. The currently available psychological resilience measures included in this review do not directly reflect all the factors that might impact a client's depression or anxiety and warrant further research. Correctional centres tend to negatively impact the mental health of incarcerated offenders, especially those unable to cope with or adjust to the correctional environment. Studies show higher rates of psychiatric disorders like depression among offenders compared to the general population. This study aimed to determine individual and combinations of possible predictors of depressed mood amongst adult male maximum-security incarcerated offenders. This study included 418 South African male incarcerated offenders, sampled using convenience sampling, and used a quantitative, cross-sectional correlational design. The PAQ subscales (Internal Adjustment, External Adjustment, and Physical Adjustment) collectively accounted for 11.6% of the variance in the depressed mood. Hierarchical regression analysis further indicated that internal adjustment and physical adjustment were the only individual predictor variables that statistically and practically significantly predicted depressed mood. Objective Methods Results Conclusion Childhood maltreatment is associated with less favourable treatment outcomes with pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy for depression. It is unknown whether this increased risk of treatment resistance in maltreated individuals extends to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).This retrospective cohort study included 501 consecutive adult referrals for an acute course of twice‐weekly ECT for unipolar or bipolar depression at an academic inpatient centre in Ireland between 2016 and 2024. Retrospectively reported physical and sexual childhood maltreatment were assessed on hospital admission. Response was defined as a score of 1 or 2 and remission was defined as a score of 1 on the Clinical Global Impression – Improvement scale 1–3 days after final ECT session. Logistic regression analyses were used to examine the associations between childhood maltreatment and ECT nonresponse and nonremission, adjusting for covariates. Mediation analyses were conducted to explore the role of psychiatric comorbidities, persistent depressive symptoms lasting 2 years or more in the current episode, and baseline depression severity.Compared to the group with no childhood maltreatment, the childhood maltreatment group had similar odds of ECT nonresponse (adjusted odds ratio = 1.47, 95% CI = 0.85–2.53) but significantly elevated odds of ECT nonremission (adjusted odds ratio = 3.75, 95% CI = 1.80–7.81). In a mediation analysis, presence of persistent depressive symptoms mediated 7.4% of the total effect of childhood maltreatment on ECT nonremission.Individuals with exposure to childhood maltreatment may be less likely to achieve full remission following a course of ECT. In an era of police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement, many Black Americans believe that racism is a mainstay of U.S. culture. Even if not experiencing racial threats or violence directly, racial tension can induce stress via anticipatory race‐related stress (ARRS). Drawing from theories of social stress and the intersectionality framework, this study examined the association between ARRS and depressive symptoms among Black women attending a historically Black university (N = 207). Second, we investigated whether psychosocial resources (mastery, resilience, self‐esteem, and social support) moderated the association between ARRS and depressive symptoms. Study results revealed that anticipatory race‐related stress was positively associated with depressive symptoms. Mastery and resilience moderated the association between anticipatory race‐related stress and depressive symptoms; that is, the association between ARRS and depressive symptoms was weaker for those with elevated levels of mastery and resilience. In sum, building resilience and mastery among Black women may be effective coping strategies for combatting anticipatory race‐related stress. Background Methods Results Conclusion This study assessed the moderating effect of social support on the association between experienced stigma versus anxiety, depression and loneliness among people with drug‐resistant tuberculosis.A descriptive cross‐sectional study was conducted among 203 adults on treatment for drug‐resistant tuberculosis for at least 8 weeks. Validated scales were used to assess experienced stigma, anxiety, depression, loneliness and social support. Partial correlations and hierarchical multiple regression were used to determine the moderating effect of social support on the association between experienced stigma versus anxiety, depression and loneliness. The interaction was visualised using slope analysis.Anxiety, loneliness and depression were reported by 148 (72.9%), 114 (56.2%) and 128 (63.1%) of the 203 participants, respectively. Experienced stigma was positively associated with depression (B = 0.428, p < 0.001), anxiety (B = 0.374, p < 0.001) and loneliness (B = 0.285, p = 0.001). Social support was negatively associated with depression (B = −0.255, p < 0.001), anxiety (B = −0.406, p < 0.001) and loneliness (B = −0.270, p = 0.001). The impact of experienced stigma on depression was different at low (B = 0.567, SE = 0.115, p < 0.001) and high (B = 0.275, SE = 0.253, p = 0.024) groups of social support. Similarly, at low social support, the effect of experienced stigma on loneliness (B = 0.491, SE = 0.250, p < 0.001) and anxiety (B = 0.254, SE = 0.060, p = 0.044) was different compared to the effect of experienced stigma on loneliness (B = 0.275, SE = 0.253, p = 0.024) and anxiety (B = 0.127, SE = 0.094, p = 0.307) at high group of social support.In this study, social support reduced the effects of experienced stigma on anxiety, depression and loneliness suggesting that improving social support among people with drug‐resistant tuberculosis is crucial in reducing the negative effects of stigma on anxiety, depression and loneliness. Objective: Previous studies have found that patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) exhibit impaired visual motion perception capabilities, and multi-level abnormalities in the human middle temporal complex (MT+), a key brain area for processing visual motion information. However, the brain activity pattern of MDD patients during the perception of visual motion information is currently unclear. In order to study the effect of depression on the activity and functional connectivity (FC) of MT+ during the perception of visual motion information, we conducted a study combining task-state fMRI and psychophysical paradigm to compare MDD patients and healthy control (HC). Methods: Duration threshold was examined through a visual motion perception psychophysical experiment. In addition, a classic block-design grating motion task was utilized for fMRI scanning of 24 MDD patients and 25 HC. The grating moved randomly in one of eight directions. We examined the neural activation under visual stimulation conditions compared to the baseline and FC. Results: Compared to HC group, MDD patients exhibited increased duration threshold. During the task, MDD patients showed decreased beta value and percent signal change in left and right MT+. In the sample comprising MDD and HC, there was a significant negative correlation between beta value in right MT+ and duration threshold. And in MDD group, activation in MT+ were significantly correlated with retardation score. Notably, no such differences in activation were observed in primary visual cortex (V1). Furthermore, when left MT+ served as the seed region, compared to the HC, MDD group showed increased FC with right calcarine fissure and surrounding cortex and decreased FC with left precuneus. Conclusion: Overall, the findings of this study highlight that the visual motion perception function impairment in MDD patients relates to abnormal activation patterns in MT+, and task-related activity are significantly connected to the retardation symptoms of the disease. This not only provides insights into the potential neurobiological mechanisms behind visual motion perception disorder in MDD patients from the aspect of task-related brain activity, but also supports the importance of MT+ as a candidate biomarker region for MDD. Depression, a mood disorder characterized by a persistent low mood and lack of enjoyment, is considered the leading cause of non-fatal health losses worldwide. Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to adapt to external or internal stimuli, resulting in functional and structural changes. This process plays a crucial role in the development of depression. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) shows significant potential as a complementary and alternative therapy for neurological diseases, including depression. However, there has been no systematic summary of the role of neuroplasticity in the pathological development of depression and TCM Interventions currently. This review systematically summarized recent literature on changes in neuroplasticity in depression and analyzed the regulatory mechanisms of active metabolites in TCM and TCM formulas on neuroplasticity in antidepressant treatment. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of anxiety and depression among patients with glaucoma compared to the average Brazilian prevalence (9.8% of anxiety and 5.8% of depression, according to the World Health Organization) and its correlation with the severity of the disease. Methods: This was a transversal, single-arm trial of patients from four glaucoma centers in São Paulo and Curitiba--Brazil. Patients comprised adults at least 18 years of age with glaucoma diagnosis under treatment for at least 6 months. All subjects of the study answered two questionnaires (PHQ-9 and GAD-7) to evaluate the presence of anxiety and depression, and the results were analyzed accordingly to clinical and demographic characteristics. Results: The protocol included a total of 210 patients. The average age was 61.6 ± 15.3 years, and the female gender was more common (68.86%). Primary open-angle glaucoma was the most common diagnosis (59.90%). The average IOP was 18.5 mmHg, and 1.5 anti-glaucoma drops were the mean treatment. The prevalence of depression and anxiety was 26.90 and 25.71%, respectively. Most patients with anxiety were classified as early glaucoma, while those with depression had severe glaucoma. Background: Growing evidence reveals the important role of clinical psychological factors in chronic-immune diseases. The aim of this study was to investigate Health-Related Quality of Life (HR-QoL), depression, anxiety, and alexithymia in patients with severe hypersensitivity reactions such as Severe Allergic Asthma (SAA) and Hymenoptera Venom Anaphylaxis (HVA). Methods: The Short-Form Health Survey-36 (SF-36), the Beck Depression Inventory Questionnaire (BDI-II), the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) and the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) were used to assess HR-QoL and clinical psychological features of patients with SAA and HVA. Results: Overall, 78 patients were recruited. Patients with SAA (n = 35) reported lower scores for physical functioning [65 (58-75) vs. 90 (85-95); p = <0.001], role limitations due to physical health [25 (0-50) vs. 62 (50-75); p = 0.004], bodily pain [47.5 (41.1-61.3) vs. 55.5 (55-96); p = 0.001], general health [40 (30-60) vs. 70 (50-80); p = 0.0003] and social functioning [50 (37.5-62.5) vs. 62.5 (54.9-75); p = 0.007] while higher scores for depressive symptoms [14 (11-15.4) vs. (9.5 (6-15.4); p = 0.05)] compared to HVA patients (n = 43). All the dimensions of SF-36 were negatively correlated with anxiety (r from -0.26 to -0.66; pall < 0.01) and depressive symptoms (r from -0.44 to -0.73; pall < 0.001). Alexithymia was negatively correlated with vitality (r = -0.28; p = 0.02) and mental health (r = -027; p = 0.03). Additionally, patients with alexithymia (38% of participants) showed higher levels of depressive symptoms [9.5 (10-19) vs. 14 (6-13.9); p = 0.005] and anxiety levels [31 (27.9-35) vs. 24 (16-33.9); p = 0.02]; they also showed less vitality [40 (39.9-50) vs. 55 (50-60) p = 0.01], social functioning [50 (37.5-62.5) vs. 62.5 (50 vs. 75); p = 0.01] and mental health [48 (44-60) vs. 68 (56-76); p = 0.004]. Background: Older Black women experience structural and intersectional disadvantages at the intersection of age, race, and gender. Their disadvantaged social statuses can translate into serious psychological health consequences. One concept that may aid in understanding psychosocial determinants of older Black women's depression risk is the "Strong Black Woman," which suggests that Black women have supernatural strength amidst experiencing adversity and are expected to "be strong" for others by providing self-sacrificial aid without complaint. Objectives: Drawing inspiration from the "Strong Black Woman" concept, the current study examined whether three psychosocial factors (i.e., mastery, anger suppression, and relational demands (from spouse, children, relatives, and friends)) were associated with depressive symptoms, clinically significant depressive symptoms, and lifetime professionally diagnosed depression among older Black women (i.e., ages 50 years and older). Design: This was a cross-sectional study. Data were drawn from the 2010 to 2012 waves of the Health and Retirement Study (N = 1,217). Methods: For past-week depressive symptoms, ordinary least squares regression analyses were conducted, and beta coefficients were reported. For clinically significant depressive symptoms (i.e., reporting three or more depressive symptoms in the past week) and lifetime professionally diagnosed depression, binary logistic regression analyses were performed, and odds ratios were reported. Results: Higher levels of mastery were associated with lower risk for depressive symptoms and depression. Anger suppression was associated with higher risk for depressive symptoms and depression. Demands from children and one's spouse were associated with higher depressive symptoms while demands from family were associated with risk for lifetime depression diagnosis. Not having a spouse was associated with heightened risk of depressive symptoms and depression. Interestingly, demands from friends were not associated with depressive symptoms nor diagnosed depression. Background: Effective medication adherence is vital for managing acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and enhancing patient well-being. This study aimed to evaluate medication adherence levels and associated factors among AMI patients using standardized assessment tools. Methods: Employing a cross-sectional descriptive design, the study involved 210 patients diagnosed with acute myocardial infarction. Participants completed the General Medication Adherence Scale (GMAS), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and provided socio-demographic details. Results: The study revealed partial adherence to medications among AMI patients, with mean scores of 24.89 (± 3.64) out of 33. Notably, good adherence was observed in non-adherence due to patient behavior (mean ± SD = 11.8 ± 2.3 out of 15) and additional disease burden (mean ± SD = 8.65 ± 2.21 out of 12), while partial adherence was noted in non-adherence due to financial constraints (mean ± SD = 4.44 ± 1.34 out of 6). Patients reported mild anxiety (mean ± SD = 8.38 ± 2.81) and no depressive symptoms (mean ± SD = 7.43 ± 2.42). Multiple linear regression analysis indicated that employed status, younger age, shorter duration of MI, lower anxiety, and depression levels were associated with higher medication adherence. However, factors such as monthly income, gender, educational level, and marital status did not predict medication adherence. Conclusion: The study highlights the significance of addressing anxiety and depression levels and considering socio-demographic factors when designing interventions to enhance medication adherence among AMI patients. Violence across Latin America is an increasingly important factor influencing migration to the US. A particular form of violence that is experienced by many Latinx migrants is extortion. This research analyzes the extortion experiences of Latinx immigrant adults arriving at the US southern border and the impact these experiences have on mental health. We find that on average, participants paid $804 in extortion during their migration. The most common perpetrators of extortion in our study were police followed by immigration officials throughout Latin America. Pregnant participants were less likely to experience extortion and adults traveling with children were more likely to be extorted. Participants who were extorted for money reported significantly greater severity of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms compared to those who were not extorted. This research is the first of its kind to analyze extortion experiences among Latinx immigrants to the US, quantifying the prevalence, amounts paid, countries where extortion occurs, and perpetrators of extortion. In addition, extortion experiences are associated with negative effects on the mental health of newly arrived Latinx immigrants to the US. Based upon these findings, we recommend that extortion should be considered a significant stressor in the migrant experience, particularly for those adults traveling with children. Background: Increasing evidences suggest that nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with neuropsychiatric disorders. Nevertheless, whether there were causal associations between them remained vague. A causal association between neuropsychiatric disorders and NAFLD was investigated in this study. Methods: We assessed the published genome-wide association study summary statistics for NAFLD, seven mental disorder-related diseases and six central nervous system dysfunction-related diseases. The causal relationships were first assessed using two-sample and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MR). Then, sensitivity analyses were performed, followed by a reverse MR analysis to determine whether reverse causality is possible. Finally, we performed replication analyses and combined the findings from the above studies. Results: Our meta-analysis results showed NAFLD significantly increased the risk of anxiety disorders (OR = 1.016, 95% CI = 1.010–1.021, P value < 0.0001). In addition, major depressive disorder was the potential risk factor for NAFLD (OR = 1.233, 95% CI = 1.063–1.430, P value = 0.006). Multivariable MR analysis showed that the causal effect of major depressive disorder on NAFLD remained significant after considering body mass index, but the association disappeared after adjusting for the effect of waist circumference. Furthermore, other neuropsychiatric disorders and NAFLD were not found to be causally related. Conclusions: These results implied causal relationships of NAFLD with anxiety disorders and Major Depressive Disorder. AbstractObjectivesMethodResultsConclusionTo alleviate the high prevalence of depressive symptoms and dementia in older Americans (≥65 years), we developed a depression intervention, Caregiver-Provided Life Review (C-PLR), and taught family caregivers life review skills online compared to a synchronous group virtual training, and examined the feasibility and delivery impact (N = 20 dyads).In a cross-sectional, mixed-methods dyadic design, we recruited family caregiver-care recipient dyads nationwide, collected the pre- and post-intervention measures on care recipients’ depression (primary outcome), life satisfaction, caregivers’ burden, caregiving rewards, and dyads’ relationship quality (secondary outcomes), and compared them using t-tests. We took fidelity scores to measure caregivers’ feasibility of delivering life reviews adhering to the protocol.Care recipients’ depressive symptoms declined significantly following the C-PLR intervention (p = 0.034) and caregivers’ rewards increased from the pre- to post-period (p = 0.019). Caregivers’ qualitative interviews supported the quantitative results that online-trained caregivers’ ability to deliver the intervention with high adherence to protocol (15.9 ± 0.27 out of 16) without increasing caregiver burden.This pilot study suggested that the C-PLR could make a positive impact on both caregivers’ and care recipients’ mental health. Discharge from psychiatric treatment has been established as an emotionally intense and vulnerable time for patients; however, to date no studies have investigated symptoms directly preceding discharge and the impact on post-discharge outcomes. Our primary aim was to assess the prevalence of elevations in depression and anxiety symptoms prior to discharge from a partial hospitalization program (PHP). Our secondary aim was to assess whether these pre-discharge elevations predict post-discharge outcomes. We analyzed daily depression and anxiety symptom severity from 4211 patients attending a PHP. Two subsamples (n = 113 and n = 70) completed post-discharge outcome measures of symptom severity, well-being, and/or functional impairment at two-weeks, one-month, and three-months post-discharge. Approximately two-thirds of patients demonstrated a significant increase in depression (p < .001) and anxiety (p < .001) symptom severity prior to discharge. These pre-discharge elevations did not significantly predict post-discharge measures when controlling for symptom severity at discharge. Our results suggest patients experience an increase in symptom severity preceding discharge, even after improvement; however, these elevations do not provide additional prognostic information. Clinicians may consider sharing these results with patients to normalize the experience of symptom elevation prior to discharge and highlight that it is not a prognostic indicator. Background: Depression is often linked to inflammation in the brain. Researchers have been exploring ways to reduce this inflammation to improve depression symptoms. One potential target is a protein called RIPK1, which is known to contribute to brain inflammation. However, it's unclear how RIPK1 influences depression. Our study aims to determine whether RIPK1 inhibition could alleviate neuroinflammation-associated depression and elucidate its underlying mechanisms. Methods: To investigate our research objectives, we established a neuroinflammation mouse model by administering LPS. Behavioral and biochemical assessments were conducted on these mice. The findings were subsequently validated through in vitro experiments. Results: Using LPS-induced depression models, we investigated RIPK1's role, observing depressive-like behaviors accompanied by elevated cytokines, IBA-1, GFAP levels, and increased inflammatory signaling molecules and NO/H2O2. Remarkably, Necrostatin (Nec-1 S), a RIPK1 inhibitor, mitigated these changes. We further found altered expression and phosphorylation of eIF4E, PI3K/AKT/mTOR, and synaptic proteins in hippocampal tissues, BV2, and N2a cells post-LPS treatment, which Nec-1 S also ameliorated. Importantly, eIF4E inhibition reversed some of the beneficial effects of Nec-1 S, suggesting a complex interaction between RIPK1 and eIF4E in LPS-induced neuroinflammation. Moreover, citronellol, a RIPK1 agonist, significantly altered eIF4E phosphorylation, indicating RIPK1's potential upstream regulatory role in eIF4E and its contribution to neuroinflammation-associated depression. Conclusion: These findings propose RIPK1 as a pivotal mediator in regulating neuroinflammation and neural plasticity, highlighting its significance as a potential therapeutic target for depression. Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a significant public health concern among adolescents with major depressive disorders (MDD). Although previous research has linked child maltreatment (CM) to NSSI, the precise mechanisms remain unclear. This study aims to investigate the association between CM, cognitive reappraisal (CR), negative coping styles (NC) and NSSI in adolescents with MDD, from the perspectives of both Latent Variable Theory and the Network Theory of Mental Disorder. Methods: A sample of 651 adolescents with MDD was recruited from January to December 2023. Data on CM, CR, NC, and NSSI were collected through paper-based self-reported questionnaires. Data analysis primarily involved structural equation modeling and network analysis. Results: The reporting rate of NSSI among adolescents with MDD was 48.2%. CM showed a significant positive correlation with NSSI. NSSI was affected by CM through three paths: the mediating role of CR, the mediating role of NC, and the chain mediating role of both CR and NC. Emotional abuse (EA) was the central node, while NSSI, EA, and "The urge to cry quietly when faced with troubles"(NC10) were the key bridge nodes. Background: The Turkish and Syrian earthquake on February 6th 2023, was one of the deadliest earthquakes in the last decade. It affected approximately 26 million people and left at least 50.000 dead. In this paper, we analyzed the psychological impact and the relationship between mental health factors, earthquake-related experiences and stressors, and resources related to the earthquake, 4 months after the event. Methods: We conducted an analytical cross-sectional study, applying a survey to 320 adults (18–93 years old) in Adiyaman, Turkey. Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms were assessed using the PC-PTSD, general psychiatric morbidity using the GHQ-12, together with questions focusing on suicidality, drug abuse, as well as experiences, related stressors and received support related to the earthquake. Results: We found a high prevalence of general mental health symptoms, and of PTSD. Fear of aftershocks and the loss of close family members were found to be risk factors for such symptoms. We didn't find significant differences in the GHQ or the PC-PTSD scores when considering ethnicity, religion or financial income. Conclusions: High levels of general mental health symptoms and PTSD symptoms were found 4 months after the earthquake and need to be addressed in all groups, independently from potential religious, social or ethnic backgrounds. This study compared the efficacy of mindfulness‐based cognitive therapy (MBCT) and Beck cognitive therapy (BCT) in addressing these issues.Forty‐five COVID‐19 survivors were randomly assigned to one of three groups: MBCT, BCT or a control. Pre‐ and postintervention assessments, using the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), were conducted. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Centre for Epidemiology Studies Depression Scale‐10. Disability was assessed using activities of daily living (ADLs) and instrumental ADLs. Trajectories of depressive symptoms were identified and classified by latent mixture modelling. Logistic regression models were used to examine the association between depressive trajectories and DFS.A total of 8373 participants aged 45 years and older were included. We identified four distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms: ‘no depressive symptoms’, ‘decreasing depressive symptoms’, ‘increasing depressive symptoms’, and ‘persistent depressive symptoms’. Compared to participants in the no depressive symptom trajectory, those in the decreasing depressive symptoms, increasing depressive symptoms and persistent depressive symptoms trajectories had an increased risk of disability or mortality, with multiple‐adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 1.75 (1.45–2.12), 2.05 (1.77–2.38) and 3.50 (2.77–4.42).Our study shows that among middle‐aged and older Chinese adults, individuals with a trajectory of depressive symptoms are at increased risk of disability or mortality. Background: Depression poses a significant challenge globally, including in safety-critical industries such as aviation. In Saudi Arabia, where the aviation sector is rapidly expanding, pilots encounter unique stressors inherent to their profession. However, research on pilot mental health, particularly within the Saudi context, remains limited despite its critical role in flight safety. Methods: This cross-sectional survey was designed to estimate the self-reported prevalence of depression in a convenience sample of airline pilots in Saudi Arabia. Participants were recruited from various commercial airlines in Saudi Arabia. Recruitment efforts utilized targeted outreach on social media platforms, focusing on pilot forums and groups. The survey was administered online for accessibility and convenience. The structured questionnaire, developed through a literature review and expert consultation, comprises sections on demographic and professional characteristics, occupational information, health habits, and depression assessment via the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Results: This study enrolled 310 participants, with the largest cohort (34.8%, n = 108) falling within the 30–39 years age group, closely followed by individuals under 30 years (30.0%, n = 93). Males dominated the sex distribution (99.0%, n = 307). The mean PHQ-9 score was 8.2 ± 5.4. Notably, 40.6% (n = 126) of the participants had a score of 10 or higher, indicating the potential for moderate, moderate-severe, or severe depression. Multivariable binary logistic regression analysis revealed that pilots with 11–15 years of experience had greater odds of experiencing depression than did those with 0–10 years of experience did (odds ratio [OR]: 3.0, 95% confidence interval [CI]: [1.1–8.4], p = 0.04). Pilots with rest times exceeding 24 h had lower odds of depression than did those with rest times less than 1 h (OR: 0.3, 95% CI: [0.1–0.8], p = 0.02). Engaging in regular exercise was associated with reduced odds of depression (OR: 0.3, 95% CI: [0.2–0.5], p < 0.01), as was longer sleep duration (> 8 h) (OR: 0.2, 95% CI: [0.1–1.0], p = 0.04). Conclusion: Our study estimates the prevalence and severity of self-reported depressive symptoms among airline pilots in Saudi Arabia, surpassing global estimates. The identified factors, including lack of regular exercise, short sleep duration, and insufficient rest between flights, underscore the complex mental health challenges faced by pilots in this region. Recent studies suggest that depression and anxiety are associated with unique aspects of EEG responses to reward and punishment, respectively; also, abnormal responses to punishment in depressed individuals are related to anxiety, the symptoms of which are comorbid with depression. In a non-clinical sample, we aimed to investigate the relationships between reward processing and anxiety, between punishment processing and anxiety, between reward processing and depression, and between punishment processing and depression. Towards this aim, we separated feedback-related brain activity into delta and theta bands to isolate activity that indexes functionally distinct processes. Based on the delta/theta frequency and feedback valence, we then used machine learning (ML) to classify individuals with high severity of depressive symptoms and individuals with high severity of anxiety symptoms versus controls. The significant difference between the depression and control groups was driven mainly by delta activity; there were no differences between reward- and punishment-theta activities. The high severity of anxiety symptoms was marginally more strongly associated with the punishment- than the reward-theta feedback processing. The findings provide new insights into the differences in the impacts of anxiety and depression on reward and punishment processing; our study shows the utility of ML in testing brain-behavior hypotheses and emphasizes the joint effect of theta-RewP/FRN and delta frequency on feedback-related brain activity. Sixty-five end-stage kidney disease patients receiving dialysis at Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital were randomly assigned to the Todac Todac app program (experimental group) or an E-moods daily mood chart app program (control group) for 3 weeks. The degree of depression was measured before and after using the app.After the end of the 3-week program, a small but significant improvement was observed in the Trait anxiety (p < 0.05) and Beck depression index (p < 0.05) in E-moods group and DAS-K scores (p < 0.05) in Todac Todac group. However, no differences were seen in any parameters between the two groups. In addition, Todac Todac was not statistically more effective than the control intervention in the subgroup analysis. The Todac Todac, a scenario-based cognitive behavioral therapy mobile app, seemed to have a limited effect on improving depression in dialysis patients. Summary Background Methods Results Conclusions Delirium is a common and potentially serious complication after major surgery. A previous history of depression is a known risk factor for experiencing delirium in patients admitted to the hospital, but the generalised risk has not been estimated in surgical patients.We conducted a systematic review and meta‐analysis of studies reporting the incidence or relative risk (or relative odds) of delirium in the immediate postoperative period for adults with pre‐operative depression. We included studies that defined depression as either a formal pre‐existing diagnosis or having clinically important depressive symptoms measured using a patient‐reported instrument before surgery. Multilevel random effects meta‐analyses were used to estimate the pooled incidences and pooled relative risks. We also conducted subgroup analyses by various study‐level characteristics to identify important moderators of pooled estimates.Forty‐two studies (n = 4,664,051) from five continents were included. The pooled incidence of postoperative delirium for patients with pre‐operative depression was 29% (95%CI 17–43%, I2 = 99.0%), compared with 15% (95%CI 6–28%, I2 = 99.8%) in patients without pre‐operative depression and 21% (95% CI 11–33%, I2 = 99.8%) in the cohorts overall. For patients with pre‐operative depression, the risk of delirium was 1.91 times greater (95%CI 1.68–2.17, I2 = 42.0%) compared with patients without pre‐operative depression.Patients with a previous diagnosis of depression or clinically important depressive symptoms before surgery have substantially greater risk of experiencing delirium after surgery. Clinicians and patients should be informed of these increased risks. Objective: To collect evidence on the possibility that patients with depression experience self-stigmatization based on label information for medications. Methods: We developed a discrete-choice experiment (DCE) survey instrument that asked respondents to make choices between hypothetical treatments for major depressive disorder (MDD). We also included treatment type (antidepressants versus antipsychotics) and approved indications for the medication. The choice questions mimicked the information presented in product inserts and required systematic tradeoffs between treatment efficacy, treatment type, and indication. We calculated how many patients were willing to forgo efficacy to avoid treatments with information associated with self-stigmatization, and how much efficacy they were willing to forgo. We also evaluated the impact of contextualizing the treatment information to reduce self-stigmatization by randomizing respondents who received additional context. Results: A total of 501 patients with MDD were recruited to complete the DCE survey. Respondents had well-defined preferences for treatment outcomes. Over 60% (63.4%) of respondents were found to be significantly affected by treatment indication. These respondents were willing to forgo about 2.5 percentage points in the chance of treatment efficacy to avoid treatments indicated for schizophrenia. We also find that some level of contextualization of the treatment details could help reduce the negative impact of treatment type and indications. Conclusions: Product-label treatment indication can potentially lead to patient self-stigmatization as shown by patients' avoidance of treatments that are also used to treat schizophrenia. The study aimed to evaluate the relation between depression, anxiety stress symptoms, duration and pain intensity in women with chronic pelvic pain (CPP). This study consisted of a sample of women diagnosed with CPP from April 2021 to August 2023, including women aged 18 years or older who agreed in writing to participate in the study with the Free Informed Consent Form, who could understand the study’s objectives and participate. Women between 31 and 37 years old, married or in a stable relationship, with a higher education degree predominated. Were observed outside the normal range scale 58.8 percent of depression, 66.7 percent of anxiety and 59.8 percent of stress. The level of alteration most often observed in patients was extremely severe in 24 percent of with depression and 33.3 percent of anxiety, and the level was mild in 19.6 percent of stress symptoms. No statistical association was found between duration of pain and emotional states of anxiety, depression or stress. Regarding pain intensity levels, there was no significant association with the presence or absence of symptoms of depression outside the normal range or its levels. It’s was significantly associated with the presence or absence of anxiety symptoms outside the normal range (p = .003) and with their levels (p = .005). Also significantly associated with the presence or absence of stress symptoms outside the normal range (p = .007), as was its levels (p = .023). The symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress occur frequently in women with CPP and that the intensity of pain experienced is significantly associated with the presence of stress and anxiety but not with depression. Aim Methods Results Conclusions The current study aims to characterize the longitudinal patterns of depression subtypes and investigate the associations among the stability of depression subtypes, COVID‐19‐related stressors, and depression severity.The study utilized data from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging, which is a national, long‐term study of Canadian adults aged 45 and older (n = 12,957). Latent profile analysis was used to identify latent depression subtypes. Latent transition analysis was then applied to assess the stability of these subtypes over time. Hierarchical multivariate linear regression was used to explore the relationships among these identified depression subtypes, COVID‐19‐related stressors, and depression severity among males and females, respectively.Distinct depression subtypes were identified. Except for atypical depression, other depression subtypes showed greater stability over time. We also found that melancholic depression (B = 9.432) and typical depression (B = 6.677) were strongly associated with depression severity during the pandemic. Health‐related stressors (B = 0.840), conflict (B = 3.639), difficulties accessing resources (B = 0.927), separation from family (B = 0.840), and caregiving experience (B = 0.764), were significantly associated with increased depression severity. Sex‐specific analyses also revealed differences in the associations between stressors and depression severity between males and females.This study contributes valuable insights into the latent clustering of depression subtypes and their stability. Stressors were associated with increased depression severity, with distinct associations observed among males and females. These findings have implications for targeted early interventions and integrated clinical management strategies by providing the evidence base for tailored mental health care during and after the pandemic. We use data from a long-running experiment in which American Indian households received income transfers from a casino, while other households did not. Using a difference-in-difference analysis, we find that the treated children had fewer depression and anxiety symptoms at age 30. In adulthood, individuals with more years of treatment exposure also had greater economic well-being around age 30. The untreated children, in adulthood, showed strong persistence in measures of mental health from adolescence through age 30, while in the treated group, children persistence was greatly attenuated. The estimated effects are slightly stronger for treated children who experienced fewer mental health symptoms before the transfers began at ages 16 and 21, but by age 30, all affected children showed reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression and improved economic outcomes. Background: Depressive symptoms have become a public health issue of common concern in countries all over the world, and have many negative impacts on university students' study and life. Depressive symptoms are influenced by many factors, including sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) consumption and duration of physical activity. However, no study has been conducted on the association between sugar-sweetened beverage consumption, duration of physical exercise, and depressive symptoms among Tibetan university students at high altitudes. Methods: In this study, a self-assessment survey of SSBs consumption, duration of physical exercise, and depressive symptoms was conducted on 6,259 (2,745 boys, 43.86%) Tibetan university students aged 19-22 years in Lhasa and Ganzi areas, China, using stratified whole population sampling. The associations were also analyzed using one-way analysis of variance, binary logistic regression analysis, and ordered logistic regression analysis in the generalised linear model. Results: The proportions of mild depression symptoms, moderate depression symptoms, and major depressive symptoms among Tibetan boys university students in high-altitude areas of China were 18.0, 22.9, and 1.5%, respectively; the proportions of girls students were 20.1, 21.9, and 1.5%, respectively, 1.5%, and the differences in the detection rates of depressive symptoms between sex were statistically significant (χ² value=14.253, p < 0.01). Ordered logistic regression analyses showed that using duration of physical exercise >60min/d and SSBs ≤1 times/week as the reference group, the duration of physical exercise<30 min/d and SSBs ≥5 times/week groups had the highest risk of developing depressive symptoms was the highest risk (OR=6.98, 95% CI: 5.05-9.65; p<0.001). Conclusion: This study confirmed that there was a positive association between SSBs consumption and depressive symptoms and a negative association between the duration of physical exercise and depressive symptoms among Tibetan university students at high altitudes in China. In the future, SSBs consumption should be effectively controlled and the duration of physical exercise should be increased to reduce the occurrence of depressive symptoms and promote the physical and mental health of Tibetan university students in high-altitude areas. Introduction: Difficult-to-treat depression (DTD) represents a broad spectrum of patients with persistent depression where standard treatment modalities are insufficient, yet specific characteristics of this group remain insufficiently understood. This investigation aims to delineate the sociodemographic and clinical profiles of suspected DTD patients in real-world clinical settings. Method: We conducted a retrospective analysis of data from patients comprehensively evaluated for suspected DTD at Kyorin University Hospital, Tokyo, Japan, between October 2014 and September 2018. The study participants consisted of individuals with persistent depression unresponsive to conventional antidepressant treatments during the current episode. Diagnoses adhered to the criteria of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision. Additional evaluations included the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and other pertinent measures. The analysis focused on comparing demographic and clinical characteristics across diagnosed groups. Results: The analysis encompassed 122 patients, with diagnoses of major depressive disorder (MDD) in 41.8%, bipolar disorder (BD) in 28.7%, and subthreshold depression in 29.5%. Notably, high incidences of psychiatric comorbidities were present across all groups, with anxiety disorders exceeding 30% and personality disorders surpassing 50%. The only significant distinction among the three groups was observed in the MADRS scores, with the MDD group exhibiting the highest values (20.9 ± 9.7 vs. 18.6 ± 9.3 vs. 11.3 ± 7.4, p<0.01). Conclusions: This study sheds light on the intricate nature of suspected DTD, emphasizing the coexistence of MDD, BD, and subthreshold depression within this category. Background: The incidence of comorbid depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms is higher in snakebite victims. However, the present state and contributing factors of depression and PTSD among Chinese snakebite victims remain unclear. Methods: A representative sample of 6837 snakebite victims were assessed with the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (Civilian Version) and The Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Multivariate analyses, including network analysis, evaluated the contributing factors of PTSD and depression symptoms caused by snake bites, as well as the bridge symptoms of comorbidity networks. Results: Among 6,837 snakebite victims, 79.5% reported PTSD symptoms and 81.4% reported depression symptoms. Comorbidity of PTSD and depression symptoms was found in 75.1%. Key factors included the presence sequelae after snakebite (ORPTSD = 2.31, ORDepression = 1.89), time to medical facilities (6–8 h: ORPTSD = 3.17, ORDepression = 2.46), and marital status (divorced/widowed: ORPTSD = 1.78, ORDepression = 1.76). Symptoms I1 ("Repeated disturbing memories") and D1 ("Bothered by things that don't usually bother me") bridged PTSD and depression networks. Conclusion: The primary psychological challenges for snakebite victims in China are PTSD and depression symptoms, which is concerning. Standardized diagnosis and treatments, timely medical care, and stable marital relationships can reduce risks. Additional psychological support and management of negative memories, especially for those with severe bridge symptoms, can be beneficial. Objectives: To explore the strength of the association between cognitive functioning and depression and anxiety in older people without dementia. Methods: An exploratory, cross‐sectional analysis of Wave 1 (2004–2007) data from the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936 dataset. Three subgroups were based on Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) subscales: no probable anxiety or depression (N = 592), probable anxiety no depression (N = 122), probable depression with/without anxiety (depression) (N = 30). Regression analyses determined relationships between subgroups and identified cognitive test variables. Results: Participants were 744 individuals (male = 385 [51.5%]; mean [M] age = 69.5 years [Standard deviation = 0.83]); characteristics for subgroups were similar. Participants with probable depression had slower simple reaction time scores than those with no anxiety or depression (regression slope [β] on the log10 scale = 0.05, 95% Confidence Interval [0.03, 0.08], p ≤ 0.001). Those with probable anxiety had significantly worse scores on other tests: Spatial span (β = −0.80 [−1.36, −0.25], p ≤ 0.005), Symbol Search (β = −1.67 [−2.90, −0.45], p ≤ 0.01), Matrix Reasoning (β = −1.58 [−2.55, −0.60], p ≤ 0.005) and Block Design (β = −3.33 [−5.29, −1.37], p ≤ 0.001), than those without probable anxiety or depression. Conclusion: Probable depression and anxiety were found to be associated with lower cognitive function in those without evidence of dementia. Objectives: There is a large treatment gap for mental health conditions in sub‐Saharan Africa where most patients who receive any care do so from lay primary health care workers (PHCW). We sought to examine the experiences of PHCW who provide care for older people with depression in Nigerian primary health care (PHC) settings. Methods: Qualitative study design. A total of 24 PHCW participated. Using in‐depth key informant interviews (KIIs), we explored the views of 15 PHCW selected from 10 rural and urban PHCs in South‐Western Nigeria. An additional focus group discussion comprising nine participants was also conducted to discuss emerging themes from KIIs. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Results: Three overall themes were identified: views about depression, treatment options, and community outreach implications. Participants perceived depression in older people as being characterised by a range of mood, behavioural, and cognitive symptoms which made clinical assessments particularly challenging. Common treatment options used by PHCW included general advice and counselling, as well as frequent need to prescribe mild analgesics, vitamins and occasional sedatives in line with patients' expectations. Antidepressants were rarely used even though PHCW are authorised. While home visits are part of their expected work schedule, PHCW rarely implemented these due to non‐availability of transport facilities. Mobile technology was identified as a possible way of overcoming this constraint to providing community based mental healthcare for older people. Conclusion: PHCWs perceived that patients' poor cognitive performance, expectations to prescribe sedatives, analgesics and vitamins, as well as non‐existence of community‐based services were existing barriers to providing evidenced based continued care for older people with depression in the study settings. Objective: Although it has been suggested that a decline in oral function is one of the potential risk factors affecting mild cognitive impairment (MCI), evidence is insufficient to draw clear conclusions. This Japanese cross‐sectional study examined the association between tongue pressure (TP) and MCI in middle‐aged and older adults aged 36–84 years. Methods: Study participants were 1019 (368 men and 651 women). TP was evaluated using a TP measurement device. The maximum value of three measurements was used for analysis. MCI was defined as being present if a participant had a Japanese version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment score of <26. Adjustment was made for age, smoking status, alcohol consumption, leisure‐time physical activity, body mass index, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, history of depression, number of teeth, employment, education, and household income. Results: The prevalence of MCI was 45.3%. Among women, compared with the lowest tertile of TP, the second and highest tertiles were significantly associated with a lower prevalence of MCI with a clear dose–response relationship; the adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence intervals) in the second and highest tertiles of TP were 0.54 (0.36–0.83) and 0.55 (0.36–0.84), respectively (p for trend = 0.005). In contrast, no statistically significant association was observed between TP and the prevalence of MCI among men. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that higher TP might be inversely associated with the prevalence of MCI in middle‐aged and older Japanese women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
