Few studies have examined the statistical association between methamphetamine/amphetamine use and acquisitive crime. Both methamphetamine/amphetamine and cannabis use have been implicated by New Zealand Police as factors in acquisitive offending among active criminal populations. The aim of our study was to examine the statistical association between spending on methamphetamine/amphetamine and cannabis and earnings from acquisitive crime among police detainees in New Zealand. Four police stations in different regions. A sample of 2125 police detainees were interviewed about their drug use and acquisitive crime. Statistical models were developed to predict involvement in acquisitive crime using spending on methamphetamine/amphetamine and cannabis for personal use, and to examine associations between the level of spending on methamphetamine/amphetamine and cannabis for personal use and level of dollar earnings from acquisitive crime. Self-reported spending on drug use and self-reported earnings from acquisitive crime in the past 30 days. Spending on cannabis and methamphetamine/amphetamine could predict involvement in acquisitive crime. Level of spending on methamphetamine/amphetamine and cannabis was associated positively with the level of earnings from property crime. Level of spending on methamphetamine/amphetamine was also associated positively with level of earnings from drug dealing. There was a largely negative association between level of spending on cannabis and level of earnings from drug dealing. High spending on methamphetamine/amphetamine is associated statistically with higher earnings from acquisitive crime among police detainees. The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing worldwide at an alarming rate. An Internet-based weight-loss programme has the potential to reach larger numbers of people than traditional face-to-face programmes. A growing body of evidence supports the use of low glycaemic load (GL) diets for weight loss. The present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of an Internet-based weight-loss programme that included foods with a low GL. One hundred and three volunteers, with a body mass index (BMI) ≥28 kg m, enrolled into an Internet weight-loss programme. A dietitian counselled participants over the Internet via weekly interactive chat rooms and monthly e-mails. Participants self-recorded body weight and food intake directly on to the Internet site. Weight, BMI and waist circumference were measured, and dietary data collected, at baseline and 6 months. Seventy participants completed the 6-month weight-loss programme. Among these, mean weight, BMI and waist circumference significantly decreased by 3.5 kg (95% CI = 2.3-4.7), 1.2 kg m (95% CI = 0.8-1.7) and 4.8 cm (95% CI = 2.8-6.8), of baseline values respectively ( P < 0.001). Twenty-five (36%) of the 70 participants lost a clinically significant amount of weight (>5% of initial body weight). This descriptive study has shown that an Internet-based weight-loss programme with low GL principles can promote weight loss. Internationally the recruitment and retention of Indigenous and minority peoples into nursing is a persistent challenge, despite their participation being essential in reducing health disparities and improving health service quality for Indigenous and minority users. We aimed to identify Māori (Indigenous to New Zealand) nursing students' experiences of undertaking a nursing degree program. A non-experimental cross-sectional survey was undertaken with undergraduate nursing students identifying as Māori. The surveys were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. One hundred and eight students responded, with a career, stable income, and desire to make a difference in Māori health outcomes motivating most to embark on a nursing program. They reported numerous obstacles that compromised their academic advancement. However, affirming students' identities; providing academic support; accessing Indigenous role models, mentors and relevant clinical experiences; and, having supportive teaching and learning environments and the inclusion of Indigenous content in curricula; were identified as strategies that promoted retention in nursing programs. Recent research provides evidence that individuals shift in their perception of variants depending on social characteristics attributed to the speaker. This paper reports on a speech perception experiment designed to test the degree to which the age attributed to a speaker influences the perception of vowels undergoing a chain shift. As a result of the shift, speakers from different generations produce different variants from one another. Results from the experiment indicate that a speaker’s perceived age can influence vowel categorization in the expected direction. However, only older participants are influenced by perceived speaker age. This suggests that social characteristics attributed to a speaker affect speech perception differently depending on the salience of the relationship between the variant and the characteristic. The results also provide evidence of an unexpected interaction between the sex of the participant and the sex of the stimulus. The interaction is interpreted as an effect of the participants’ previous exposure with male and female speakers.The results are analyzed under an exemplar model of speech production and perception where social information is indexed to acoustic information and the weight of the connection varies depending on the perceived salience of sociophonetic trends. Shared Decision Making (SDM) is widely accepted as the preferred method for reaching treatment decisions in the oncology setting including those about clinical trial participation: however, there is some disagreement between researchers over the components of SDM. Specific standardized coding systems are needed to help overcome this difficulty. The first objective was to describe the development of an oncology specific SDM coding system, the DAS-O. The second objective was to provide reliability and validity data supporting the DAS-O. Consultation data were available from tertiary cancer center out patient oncology clinics in: Australia, New Zealand (ANZ), Switzerland, Germany and Austria (SGA). Patients were women with a confirmed diagnosis of early stage breast cancer. Reliability data were from 18 randomly selected coded transcripts drawn from ANZ and SGA. Concurrent validity data are from 55 (ANZ) consultations. Inter and Intra rater reliability data was evaluated using Kappa correlation statistics and correlation coefficients. Correlation coefficients were used to assess concurrent validity between the DAS-O and two other SDM coding systems, OPTION and DSAT. Inter and Intra rater reliability for the system were high with average Kappas of 0.58 and 0.65 respectively. Correlation coefficients between DAS-O and OPTION was 0.73 and >0.5 for DSAT. Time series analysis has seen limited application in the biomedical Literature. The utility of conventional and advanced time series estimators was explored for intensive care unit (ICU) outcome series. Monthly mean time series, 1993-2006, for hospital mortality, severity-of-illness score (APACHE III), ventilation fraction and patient type (medical and surgical), were generated from the Australia and New Zealand Intensive Care Society adult patient database. Analyses encompassed geographical seasonal mortality patterns, series structural time changes, mortality series volatility using autoregressive moving average and Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity models in which predicted variances are updated adaptively, and bivariate and multivariate (vector error correction models) cointegrating relationships between series. The mortality series exhibited marked seasonality, declining mortality trend and substantial autocorrelation beyond 24 lags. Mortality increased in winter months (July-August); the medical series featured annual cycling, whereas the surgical demonstrated long and short (3-4 months) cycling. Series structural breaks were apparent in January 1995 and December 2002. The covariance stationary first-differenced mortality series was consistent with a seasonal autoregressive moving average process; the observed conditional-variance volatility (1993-1995) and residual Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity effects entailed a Generalized Autoregressive Conditional Heteroscedasticity model, preferred by information criterion and mean model forecast performance. Bivariate cointegration, indicating long-term equilibrium relationships, was established between mortality and severity-of-illness scores at the database level and for categories of ICUs. Multivariate cointegration was demonstrated for {log APACHE III score, log ICU length of stay, ICU mortality and ventilation fraction}. Much work on residential segregation in urban areas has focused on aspatial indices of urban residential segregation, largely ignoring locational aspects of the degree of spatial separation of different ethnic groups. The adoption of measures of global and local spatial autocorrelation has recently been suggested as a way of introducing a more explicit spatial approach to studying segregation. This paper uses two of those measures - Moran's I and Getis and Ord's G*- to explore segregation of the four main ethnic groups in Auckland, New Zealand's largest and most multiethnic city, at the four most recent censuses held there. They are used to identify the clusters of census reporting units (meshblocks) where each group is significantly over- and under-represented, and to chart the degree of segregation within such clusters. Many couples do not complete IVF treatment. There is little published data regarding this issue and also what changes might lead to better compliance rates. To investigate what proportion of patients discontinue IVF prematurely, why they stop treatment, and what factors are important for them to restart. Survey of 1310 patients undergoing IVF treatment over a 3-year period at a single IVF provider. Information was collection on demographics and the outcomes of treatment. For those who discontinued treatment two further questions were completed: reasons why treatment was discontinued (primary outcome measure) and factors required to reactivate fertility treatment (secondary outcome measure). 40.2% response rate. 15.0% of patients discontinued IVF prematurely; 77.0% had a live birth or were currently pregnant. Those who discontinued treatment were more likely to be older and have a trade qualification. Of those who discontinued treatment; failing to become pregnant, cost, and stress were identified as factors. Less expensive treatment and a guaranteed baby were important factors for patients to restart treatment. Numerous comments were made regarding having readily available counselling services and continuity of care. Reasons for stopping treatment are multifactorial. Our data set is limited by a low response rate. Further research is needed to into this issue, including differences between private and public cessation rates are barriers to completion of treatment. The majority of patients having IVF achieve either a live birth or fall pregnant through IVF. In high-income countries, stillbirth rates have been static in recent decades. Unexplained stillbirths account for up to 50% of these deaths. A case-control study was conducted in Auckland, New Zealand, from July 2006 to June 2009 to explore modifiable risk factors for late stillbirth (≥28 weeks of gestation). Eligible participants were women who had a singleton late stillbirth without a congenital abnormality. Two controls with ongoing pregnancies were randomly selected at the same gestation as each case. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews and from clinical records. A total of 155/215 (72%) cases and 310/429 (72%) controls consented to take part in the study. Women who had a late stillbirth were more likely to be of Pacific ethnicity and of parity ≥4 (OR = 1.7, 95% CI: 1.1-2.6 and 2.7, 95% CI: 1.4-5.3, respectively). The median gestational age at diagnosis of fetal death was 261 days (IQR 239-279), and the median gestation at which the controls were interviewed was 264.5 days (IQR 240-274) P = 0.48. 'Unexplained antepartum death' ( n = 61, 39.4%) and 'fetal growth restriction' ( n = 29, 18.7%) accounted for almost 60% of stillbirths. The post-mortem rate for all cases was 47% (73/155) and 43% (26/61) for those classified as 'unexplained antepartum death'. This study of risk factors for stillbirth is novel in that it used gestation-matched controls with ongoing pregnancies. Its detailed investigation into maternal health and behaviour during pregnancy has the potential to lead to a better understanding of modifiable risk factors for late stillbirth. The article presents the edited text of a speech given by government statistician Geoff Bascand, delivered to the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs (NZIIA) in Wellington, New Zealand on October 20, 2010. Bascand spoke about the complementary roles of official statistics including its use in policy development and operation, and the facilitation of public debate. Bascand offered balance of payments figures in September 2010 released by Statistics New Zealand.

The article presents information on increasing rate and cause of incarceration in New Zealand between 1999 and 2009. It discusses the factors behind increasing rate of incarceration by conducting statistical survey including increase in the level of violent offending, the average length of imprisonment sentences and the average length of custodial remand periods. It also discusses the methods to reduce the rate of incarceration by using rehabilitative and restorative sentencing practices.

Primary objective: To examine fatigue prevalence, severity, predictors and co-variates over 6 months post-mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). Research design: Longitudinal prospective study including 263 adults with MTBI. Procedures: Participants completed the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS), Rivermead Post-concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPSQ), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and the Short Form 36 Health Survey-Version 2 (SF-36v2). Complete data were available for 159 participants. Key measures; prevalence-RPSQ Item 6: severity-FSS. The effect of time on fatigue prevalence and severity was examined using ANOVA. Multiple regression analysis identified statistically significant covariates. Main outcomes and results: Post-MTBI fatigue prevalence was 68%, 38% and 34% at 1 week, 3 and 6 months, respectively. There was a strong effect for time over the first 3 months and moderate-to-high correlations between fatigue prevalence and severity. Early fatigue strongly predicted later fatigue; depression, but not anxiety was a predictor. Fatigue was seen as laziness by family or friends in 30% of cases. Conclusions: Post-MTBI fatigue is a persistent post-concussion symptom, exacerbated by depression but not anxiety. It diminishes in the first 3 months and then becomes relatively stable, suggesting the optimum intervention placement is at 3 months or more post-MTBI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

International Journal of Nursing Practice 2010; 16: 586-594 A global increase in older people will also mean an increase in the numbers of lesbian, gay and bisexual people requiring residential support. All health practitioners working with older people need to be aware of the existence of older lesbian, gay and bisexual people in order to provide health care that is appropriate. This study describes lesbian, gay and bisexual people's accommodation plans for old age through a cross-sectional quantitative survey design. Participants were recruited through mainstream and lesbian, gay and bisexual media and venues. A total of 2269 participants completed the 133-item survey. When asked about what accommodation plans they had for their older years lesbian, gay and bisexual people identified that they were least likely to choose living in a retirement community/facility. However, if unable to live independently the majority of respondents identified they would prefer to live in a retirement facility that specifically catered for people who did not identify as heterosexual. This study has found that the residential support sector needs to be prepared to provide a health service that is person-centred, free from discriminatory practices and meets the needs of all health consumers regardless of sexual orientation. It is well established that speakers accommodate in speech production. Recent work has shown a similar effect in perception—speech perception is affected by a listener’s beliefs about the speaker. In this paper, we explore the consequences of such perceptual accommodation for experiments in speech perception and lexical access. Our interest is whether perceptual accommodation to one speaker—the experimenter who meets participants, for example— might have carry-over effects on participants’ behavior in subsequent tasks that do not directly involve the experimenter’s voice. We explore this possibility by exposing groups of participants to different varieties of English before they participate in experiments involving speech perception and/or lexical access. Our results reveal that the nature of this prior exposure considerably influences participants’ behavior in the tasks.This suggests that the phonetic detail of encountered speech is stored in the lexicon, together with information about the speaker’s regional origin. Subparts of phonetically detailed lexical distributions can then be effectively ‘primed’ by exposure to speakers or lexical items associated with particular dialects. We argue for an exemplar model of lexical representation with both word-level and phoneme-level representations. The consequences of cross-dialectal priming vary, depending on whether tasks involve primarily word-level or phoneme-level access. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Korean society highly values personal appearance. Given the established links between perfectionism and eating disorders in Western countries, the present project investigated such links and the extent to which these were moderated by the acculturation patterns of the participants. Korean immigrants to New Zealand ( N = 123) completed measures of perfectionism, ethnic identity, eating disorders, and social desirability. Positive and negative perfectionism were associated with eating-disorder symptoms. For males, but not females, negative perfectionism was more strongly associated with increased body satisfaction only among those who identified strongly as Korean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Healthy, nulliparous women at low risk for preterm birth would not usually undergo transvaginal scanning at the 20-week morphology scan. The study aimed to determine whether transabdominal cervical measurement would be sufficient to exclude a short cervix in this population. To investigate the relationship between transabdominal (TA) and transvaginal (TV) ultrasound measurements of the cervix at 20 weeks' gestation. At 20 weeks' gestation, TA and TV cervical length was measured in 203 healthy nulliparous participants in the Screening for Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE) study. The TA and TV measurements were correlated and examined for variance. Paired measurements were achieved in 203 cases. The shortest cervical length on TV scanning was 22 mm, the longest was 59 mm, with TA equivalents of 21 mm and 56 mm respectively. The mean TV cervical length was 39.1 (SD 6.2) mm and mean TA 36.6 (SD 5.8) mm. The average difference between the measurements was 2.6 (SD 5.2) mm, the TA length being the shorter of the two. A TA on the 25th percentile (33 mm length) was associated with a 25th percentile TV length of 36 mm. The intraclass correlation coefficient between TV and TA measurements was 0.77, but the actual difference between the two measurements was not constant. Transabdominal measurements are consistently less than TV measurements. As the measurements are correlated, TA scanning could be used to assess cervical length in most cases initially. Where the TA length is <5th percentile (27 mm), this measure could be used as an indication to perform a TV scan as this correlates with a 5th percentile TV measurement of 28 mm. The aim of this study is to determine whether the analysis of CD38 expression by chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) cells provides useful additional prognostic information. Clinical, laboratory, overall survival (OS) and treatment-free survival (TFS) data were collected on 130 CLL patients who had CD38 expression analysed at Canterbury Health Laboratories, New Zealand (NZ) during 1998-2008. The detection of any level of CD38 expression by CLL cells was associated with a significantly shorter OS and TFS. When analysis was restricted to Binet stage A patients, CD38 expression identified a subset of patients (21%) who, in common with Binet stage B/C patients, had a significantly shorter OS and TFS ( P < 0.0015), and a TFS at 4 years of <10%. In contrast, CD38-negative Binet stage A patients had an OS that was not significantly different from that of an age/sex-matched NZ population and a 5-year TFS of 77%. This study indicates that, when combined with clinical staging, the presence of any detectable CD38 expression can be used to further improve the identification of CLL patients with more aggressive disease (i.e. Binet stage B/C or Binet stage A and CD38 positive). This will allow better identification of those patients requiring more intensive monitoring and also allow improved patient counselling regarding prognosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: There are few published data analysing risk factors for adverse drug events and medication errors in children. Aim: To evaluate the factors that influence the risk of adverse drug events and medication errors occurring during a hospital admission for a child. Method: Prospective cohort study of all paediatric admissions of at least 24 hours duration at Dunedin Hospital over a 12- week period. Suspected events were identified via chart review, multidisciplinary ward meetings, parent interview and voluntary staff reporting. Hypothesis tests were performed using hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Results: 495 patients were included who in total had 520 admissions. There were 67 adverse drug events, of which 38 (57%) were classified as preventable, 77 potential adverse drug events and 255 'no-harm' medication errors. On multivariate analysis, the major independent risk factors for adverse drug events were increasing age (HR 1.2; 95%CI 1.1-1.3) and a greater number of regular medications (HR 6; 95%CI 1.9-19.3). For potential adverse drug events, intravenous infusions conferred the highest risk (HR 32.4; 95%CI 10.9-95.5). For 'no-harm' medication errors, greater duration of hospital admission (HR 1.2; 95%CI 1.1-1.3) and a greater number of regular medications (HR 14.6; 95%CI 6.4-33.2), particularly IV infusions (HR 13; 95%CI 2.9-56.9), were the main predictors of occurrence. Sex and weight were not found to be related to adverse drug events or medication errors in this cohort of hospitalised children. Conclusion: A greater number of regular medications and intravenous infusions were important risk factors for adverse drug events and medication errors occurring during hospital admission for a child. Increasing age also influenced the risk of an adverse drug event, whereas for 'no harm' medication errors, a greater duration of hospital admission was important. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Primary objective: This study examined differences in perceived communicative effectiveness between a group of eight participants with chronic dysarthria following TBI and their nominated communication partners (TBIP). The relationship between communicative effectiveness and listener ratings of speech intelligibility was also examined. Research design: Group comparison design. Methods and procedures: The Communicative Effectiveness Survey was completed by the participants with TBI and their communication partner. Speech intelligibility of the eight adults with dysarthria was rated by nine naive listeners using direct magnitude estimation. Main outcomes and results: The participants with TBI tended to rate their communicative effectiveness higher than their TBIP; however, this trend was not significant. No significant differences were noted between the TBI and TBIP groups in ratings of communicative effectiveness in various communication settings. No significant relationship was found between conversation level intelligibility and perceptions of communicative effectiveness, as rated by individuals with TBI and TBIP. Conclusions: The findings of this study highlight the need for collaborative participation in the therapeutic process by all stakeholders. The lack of correlation between speech intelligibility and perceived communicative effectiveness highlights the need for careful examination of activity and participation during assessment and goal-setting. Searching for good evidence to develop clinical practice guidelines can be challenging, as research may not be published or available. A simple question set the authors on a journey to find evidence related to the nursing administration of subcutaneous dexamethasone in the palliative setting. This article outlines the search for evidence and discusses the survey results to gather expert opinion about the nursing administration of dexamethasone. Survey results indicated that only 39% of community services gave dexamethasone via a bolus injection and 88% gave it via a continuous infusion, mainly for site preservation. The diluents used were water for injection or normal saline. Many procedural aspects were supported by current guidelines, with several services using the New Zealand Waitemata District Health Board's (2008) clinical guidelines. Developing and implementing procedural recommendations for nurses to administer this subcutaneous medication will form the next stage of the project. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Tinnitus is associated with hearing loss in adulthood, often resulting from noise or age, but it is not known whether children's hearing and/or middle ear health predispose them to tinnitus in adulthood. Methods: The participants were members of the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, born in Dunedin, New Zealand, between April 1972 and March 1973. The base sample consisted of 1,037 children. Otitis media was assessed at 5,7, and 9 years of age; audiometry and tympanometry findings were recorded at 11 years of age, and a detailed description of the tympanic membrane was made at 15 years of age. At 32 years of age, 970 of the 1,015 living study members (96%) answered questions about tinnitus. Results: Children who had otitis media and a raised audiometric threshold went on to experience more tinnitus in adulthood than did those without middle ear disease or those who had otitis media without a raised threshold. In those who had recovered from otitis media, audiometric threshold elevation at lower and higher frequencies was associated with experiencing tinnitus in adulthood. Neither childhood otitis media alone nor elevated thresholds alone predicted adult tinnitus. Conclusions: Childhood otitis media with an associated hearing loss in the low and high frequencies was associated with a greater probability of experiencing tinnitus in adulthood. Research measuring whole-body protein turnover (WBPT) after both exercise and nutrition has generally focused on resistance exercise; however, there is a paucity of data regarding the effect of postaerobic exercise nutrition, especially in older adults. It is not known if postexercise protein feeding has a beneficial effect on protein turnover after low- to moderate-intensity exercise. We investigated whether consuming protein plus carbohydrate (PRO) immediately after an acute bout of aerobic exercise has an additive effect over carbohydrate alone (CHO) on WBPT in older individuals. Twelve healthy older adults (age, 59 ± 4 years) were studied on 2 separate occasions after 1 h of exercise at approximately 50% of maximal rate of oxygen uptake, followed by 4 h of recovery. Immediately following exercise, subjects ingested a CHO (60 g) or an isocaloric PRO beverage (40 g carbohydrate, 20 g whey protein). Whole-body protein metabolism was determined using [1-13C]leucine infusion (60 mg prime; 75 mg·h-1 continuous), and sampling blood and expired breath. Rates of whole-body leucine appearance and oxidation, and nonoxidative leucine disposal during the third and fourth hours of postexercise recovery were higher in the PRO group (2.51 ± 0.55, 0.78 ± 0.37, and 1.71 ± 0.44 µmol·kg-1·min-1, respectively) than in the CHO group (1.81 ± 0.27, 0.33 ± 0.14, and 1.47 ± 0.25 µmol·kg-1·min-1, respectively; p = 0.001). Our results indicate that consumption of a PRO beverage after aerobic exercise increased WBPT to a greater extent than a CHO beverage. On invite en deux occasions douze adultes en bonne santé et âgés de 59 ± 4 ans à participer à une séance d'exercice d'une durée de 60 min et d'intensité suscitant 50 % du consommation d'oxygene maximale suivie d'une récupération d'une durée de 4 h. Immédiatement après la fin de l'exercice, les sujets consomment soit une boisson contenant des sucres (CHO; 60 g) soit une boisson contenant des sucres et des protéines (PRO; 40 g de sucres et 20 g de protéines lactosériques) totalisant la même quantité d'énergie. On évalue le métabolisme protéique de l'organisme en entier par l'administration de [1-13C] leucine (infusion immédiate de 60 mg suivie d'une perfusion à raison de 75 mg·h-1) et l'analyse des échantillons de sang et des gaz expirés. Les taux corporels d'apparition de la leucine, de son oxydation et de l'élimination de la fraction non oxydée au cours de la 3e et de la 4e heure de la période de récupération postexercice sont plus importants dans la condition PRO (2,51 ± 0,55, 0,78 ± 0,37 et 1,71 ± 0,44 μmol·kg-1·min-1 respectivement) que dans la condition CHO (1,81 ± 0,27, 0,33 ± 0,14 et 1,47 ± 0,25 μmol·kg-1·min-1 respectivement) (p = 0,001). Nos observations révèlent qu'un apport de protéines à la suite d'un exercice aérobie suscite une plus grande augmentation du WBPT que ne le fait un apport de sucres. Play is the context for acquiring social skills. While it is logical to suspect that the difficulties associated with ADHD would affect play, there is surprisingly little work in that area. Further, there is almost no previous research describing the playmates of children with ADHD. This study involved children with ADHD ( n = 112) playing with a usual playmate ( n = 112), and pairs of age-, ethnicity-, and sex-matched children ( n = 126) playing together. In this paper, the authors interpret the data from the perspective of the playmates. The overall finding was that the play behavior of the playmates closely resembled that of the children with ADHD; it was characterized by low levels of empathy. A primary purpose of this paper is to explore possible explanations for this surprising finding. Two possible explanations are explored. First, children with ADHD are demanding playmates so that children who play with them mirror their negative behaviors. Second, although the playmates did not have ADHD, their play behaviors might reflect the known risk of negative behaviors reported amongst siblings and peers of children with ADHD. Aim: To investigate the bone health and associated risk factors of a group of South Asian women living in New Zealand. Studies on the Indian subcontinent suggest a high incidence of low bone mineral density in women with poor vitamin D status and low dietary calcium intake. Methods: Subjects were women of South Asian origin (n = 91) living in Auckland, New Zealand. Subjects were stratified by menopausal status. They completed a 4-day food diary, and provided a fasting blood sample. Bone mineral density was measured in the lumbar spine and proximal femur using dual X-ray densitometry. Results: Mean age of premenopausal (n = 71) and postmenopausal (n = 20) women was 39.8 ± 7.8 and 55.3 ± 5.4 years, respectively. Osteoporosis ( T-score ≤−2.5) was present in 32% of postmenopausal and 3% of premenopausal subjects, but only in the lumbar spine. Adequate 25(OH)D levels (>50 nmol/L) were found in only 22% of premenopausal, and 26% of postmenopausal women. A body mass index in the overweight or obese category was found in 61% of premenopausal and 75% of postmenopausal women. Conclusion: The high incidence of osteoporosis in the postmenopausal group could be associated with the early age of oophorectomy or menopause together with low vitamin D status. Successful behavior change according to the transtheoretical model involves progressing through a series of stages of change. This paper examines the proportion of men in each stage of change for fruit and vegetable intake, compares stage classification with intentions and behavior, and the impact of contextual factors on stage membership. Men randomly selected from the New Zealand electoral roll completed a postal questionnaire (n = 518; 45% response rate). One-third (32%) of respondents were not intending to eat five or more servings of fruit and vegetables a day (precontemplation stage), 10% were contemplating change (contemplation stage), 7% preparing to change (preparation stage), and 51% were already doing so in the combined action/maintenance stage. Intentions increased on average across stages, and fruit and vegetable intake was at least two servings higher in action/maintenance. Dietary guideline knowledge, older age, higher income, education and food security increased the likelihood of being in action/maintenance. Simple health promotion messages should be directed toward men, promoting conventional and affordable produce, and dietary guidelines. Community and policy approaches that increase food skills and knowledge, fruit and vegetable access and affordability would support behavior change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Kinematic studies have shown that fast bowlers have run-up velocities, based on centre of mass velocity calculations, which are comparable to elite javelin throwers. In this study, 34 fast bowlers (22.3 ± 3.7 years) of premier grade level and above were tested using a three-dimensional (3-D) motion analysis system (240 Hz). Bowlers were divided into four speed groups: slow-medium, medium, medium-fast, and fast. The mean centre of mass velocity at back foot contact (run-up speed) was 5.3 ± 0.6 m/s. Centre of mass velocity at back foot contact was significantly faster in the fastest two bowling groups compared to the slow-medium bowling group. In addition, stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that the centre of mass deceleration over the delivery stride phase was the strongest predictor of ball speed in the faster bowling groups. In conclusion, centre of mass kinematics are an important determinant of ball speed generation in fast bowlers. In particular, bowlers able to coordinate their bowling action with periods of centre of mass deceleration may be more likely to generate high ball speed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research question Is length of stay (LoS) in hospital a stable proxy for severity of injury when monitoring time trends in serious injury incidence? Objective To investigate whether LoS metrics (mean, median and proportion exceeding several LoS thresholds) have changed over time for injury diagnoses with known severity. Design Time series investigation. Subjects and setting New Zealand population admitted to hospital for injury and discharged during the period 1989 to 1998. Main outcome measures Interpolated median and geometric mean lengths of stay, as well as the proportion of cases that have an LoS greater than or equal to 3, 4, 7 and 14 days in hospital. Methods ICD-9-CM diagnoses that are approximately homogeneous in regard to severity of injury (ICD-HS diagnoses) were identified. Trends were investigated in the LoS statistics for: injury and non-injury diagnoses combined; all injury diagnoses; major body sites of injury; severity strata; and ICD-HS diagnoses. Results Almost without exception, there was a decline in the LoS statistics over time for all diagnoses, all injury diagnoses, each body site of injury investigated, severity strata, and the ICD-HS diagnoses. Conclusions Reductions in median and geometric mean LoS over time, as well as reductions in the proportion exceeding selected LoS thresholds, were due to factors other than reductions in the incidence of serious injury; for example, changes in service delivery over time. In this paper poverty during midlife (ages 40-64) is explored through objective measures such as income, assets, housing tenure and poverty thresholds, and through subjective measures of financial adequacy. Statistical analyses were used to determine which of the objective measures were associated with satisfaction with economic living standards and satisfaction with life overall. The associations between these variables provide insights into the impacts of poverty on wellbeing during this stage of life. In particular living on a low income, living below the poverty threshold and living with few assets in midlife were all negatively associated with wellbeing. In addition to the immediate impact on wellbeing, the lower level of asset accumulation and home ownership, compared with older cohorts, suggest key challenges for policy as these midlife cohorts move into old age in larger numbers. Acoustic estimates of mesopelagic fish: as clear as day and night? – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 66: 1310–1317.The pelagic ecosystem on the Chatham Rise east of New Zealand has been monitored annually using acoustic surveys since 2001. Most of the acoustic backscatter comes from diurnally migrating mesopelagic fish, which are the major prey of hoki (Macruronus novaezelandiae) and other valuable commercial species. Mesopelagic schools and layers typically occur at 100–400 m depth during the day and migrate above 200 m depth at night. Previous acoustic estimates of the biomass of mesopelagic fish on the Chatham Rise were based only on night-time estimates from the upper 200 m and may significantly underestimate actual biomass. Paired day–night comparisons found that an estimated 20% of the total daytime backscatter migrates to depths of 0–14 m at night, where it is too shallow to be detected by hull-mounted acoustic instruments. In contrast, there is a positive bias associated with acoustic estimates of mesopelagic organisms during the day because they can occur close to the bottom mixed with demersal fish. Two alternative approaches for estimating biomass of diurnally migrating mesopelagic species are suggested. The first applies a correction based on the estimated proportion of backscatter migrating into the surface deadzone to night-time estimates of backscatter in the upper 200 m. The second uses night-time estimates of demersal backscatter, which remains deeper than 200 m at night, to correct daytime estimates of total backscatter. Both methods gave similar estimates of abundance and demonstrated that there was no statistically significant trend in mesopelagic fish biomass on the Chatham Rise over the past seven years. The article presents a study which predicted the distributions of diadromous fish species across lowland rivers and streams in New Zealand through statistical models, and showed the possibility of using these models to plan restoration efforts for freshwater ecosystems. Pitch canker is a highly damaging disease of Pinus radiata and the New Zealand forest industry is concerned by the potential impact of the disease, should it arrive, in New Zealand. To provide a rapid identification technique for this pathogen, a polymerase chain reaction-based diagnostic method has been developed. The method is able to detect the presence of the pathogen within infected host tissue, as well as infested soil and the reliability of the test has been estimated using Bayesian statistics. The rural sector features prominently in the statistics for All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) injuries and fatalities amongst children in New Zealand. ATVs are the new workhorse of the farm and their increasing popularity suggests the rate of accidents involving children will not abate of its own accord. This paper summarises and updates research on ATV farm accidents involving children undertaken early in 2006. It reiterates the unsuitability of ATVs for use by and around children and examines accident statistics in the wake of a court case resulting from the death of a child on the family's farm. It argues that voluntary compliance with existing guidelines for the operation of ATVs is an insufficient strategy for reducing or eliminating existing risks to rural children. While the specificity of rural circumstances is acknowledged, it is not accepted as an adequate justification for maintaining the status quo. Rather, in light of the increasing numbers of ATVs and their growing popularity amongst lifestyle block holders, reducing unacceptable levels of risk to rural children requires the development of legal restrictions on the operation of the vehicles. The article draws attention to changes to the use made by New Zealand governments of this particular investigative instrument, documenting changes in the frequency and composition of commissions of inquiry from 1909 onwards. The effect of broader changes to the New Zealand policy environment on the use of formal commissions of inquiry is noted, and the article also highlights the availability of options other than commissions of inquiry for governments wishing to see a particular topic made the subject of a special investigation. Inaccurate population data remain a major problem in the conservation of burrow-nesting Procellariiform seabirds. We evaluated the potential of predictive habitat modelling, in contrast with traditional surface-area based strategies, to estimate the population size of the endangered Cook’s petrel (Pterodroma cookii), breeding on one of two islands in New Zealand. Generalised linear models of burrow abundance using topographic data collected in the field, or extracted from Geographic Information System layers, were developed, and the final model applied to Geographic Information Systems-derived datasets in a population analysis. To compare this result with traditional census methods, population estimates were also calculated by averaging burrow densities across the total area available (simple model) and within vegetation zones (habitat-area model). Results of all models were scaled using rigorously collected burrow occupancy data. The final model, based upon altitude, slope, and distance from ridgelines, explained 31% of the variance in Cook’s petrel burrow abundance and showed an enhanced predictive fit compared with the two area-based models. This model indicated that annually 286,000 (95% confidence interval: 213,000–413,000) pairs of Cook’s petrel breed on Little Barrier Island, approximately six times that previously suggested. Population estimates based on simple and habitat-area models were less accurate, being 10% and 30% greater than the predictive model estimate, respectively. This study underlines the need for accurate population estimates for burrowing seabird taxa by presenting a major population revision for the Cook’s petrel. Predictive habitat models, employing rigorously collected data, offer an improvement on more traditional population census methodologies that are susceptible to scale-induced bias. This paper examines the concept of capital city tourism with reference to Wellington, the world's southernmost capital. Drawing on visitor survey data, interviews with providers, the analysis of marketing strategies and secondary statistics, the paper seeks to distinguish the 'capital' dimension from other aspects of tourism in the city and to consider this from the perspective of the visitors, providers and the destination marketing organization. Reflecting a range of functions-political, economic and symbolic-the 'capital' dimensions are shown to be multiple and often indirect. In recent years there has been an emerging interest in sudden unexplained intrauterine death.To determine the major causes of late fetal death (LFD) in New Zealand during 1980–1999 and to document the proportion of deaths considered unexplained. In addition, to quantify the number of LFD undergoing post-mortem during this period.Using the Office for National Statistics (UK) hierarchical classification system, all information available on death certificates was used to assign a single cause to LFD for the period 1980–1999. Trends were analysed using logistic regression and risk factor profiles established for each cause of death. Post-mortem rates and the characteristics of those failing to undergo post-mortem were analysed for the period 1989–1999.LFD rates declined from 60.1 per 10 000 in 1980–1981 to 30.5 in 1998–1999. The declines were not uniform across all causes, with intrapartum deaths declining 73%, congenital anomalies 70% and antepartum asphyxia 50%. In contrast, unspecified deaths increased 1%, and with the decline in other causes of death, also increased proportionally, from 10.8% of LFD in 1980–81 to 28.1% in 1998–1999. Post-mortem rates fell by 31% during 1989–1999, with Maori and Pacific babies and those in more deprived New Zealand Deprivation Index areas being significantly less likely to undergo post-mortem.While total LFD rates declined significantly during 1980–1999, rates of unspecified LFD remained static. Low post-mortem rates, however, suggest that many of these deaths may be uninvestigated rather than truly unexplained. Nevertheless, the persistence of a category of death which, to date, has failed to improve with advances in obstetric technology suggests that further measures are necessary if New Zealand's LFD rates are to continue to decline. This paper titled 'Official Statistics – a recognisable and enduring national resource' focuses on the issues of branding and identity of Official Statistics in a whole of government context. It draws very specifically on the outcomes of a recently completed major review of the official statistical system in New Zealand. The initiatives arising out of this review, which are designed to improve and strengthen the governance, management and performance of this system, are outlined in the paper. The paper also discusses some challenges this may present for Statistics New Zealand regarding its own branding as a number of the key initiatives arising out of the review have, as a key objective, to differentiate and brand official statistics for all key stakeholders. National surveys of gambling and problem gambling have recently been completed in New Zealand and Sweden. These studies are unique in that data collection was undertaken by official government statistical agencies, involved large, nationally representative samples, and attained high response rates. Comparison of the findings is facilitated by the use of similar procedures and instrumentation and is of interest in that both countries have similar per capita gambling expenditure and welfare states that have recently undergone major economic and social restructuring. Data on gambling participation, problem gambling prevalence and risk factors for problem gambling are presented and discussed. While there are a number of similarities and differences, the Swedish findings are more similar to those of an earlier national survey conducted in New Zealand during 1991. This suggests that risk factors are changing over time in relation to evolving patterns of gambling participation and attitudes towards gambling, a finding that has implications for future patterns of gambling and problem gambling in these and other countries. The New Zealand Government Statistician decided that, for electoral purposes, Statistics New Zealand should impute Māori–descent status for individuals not responding Yes or No to theMāori–descent question in the 1996 Census of Population and Dwellings. Imputation provides a sounder basis for calculating electoral populations than the approach used in 1994, when all who had not answered clearly Yes or No in the 1991 Census were effectively allocated to non–Māori descent. For the purposes of imputation, the key variables related to the Māori–descent variable were identified using a statistical technique called CHAID (Chisquared Automatic Interaction Detector). Subgroups were created by cross–classification across five variables—island, iwi, Māori ethnic group, Māori–descent composition of the rest of the household, and age group. Within each subgroup, the proportion who responded Yes or No for Māori descent was used to allocate the remainder to Yes or No. The imputation increased the proportion allocated to Māori descent from 16.0% to 17.4% of the total population. It puts the words of the Act into simple mathematical formulae and describes how these concepts are implemented in the Government Statistician’s electoral calculations, with examples from the 1997 calculations. William Stanley Jevons published his statistical analysis of the climate of Australia and New Zealand, in 1858. Florence Nightingale advised Sir George Grey to collect statistics on M a ori health. Frederick William Frankland published a significant study of mortality in New Zealand, in 1882; and in 1890 George Hogben pioneered the application of statistics to seismology. These people all contributed to statistical knowledge in New Zealand, but were not New Zealanders. Earnest Rutherford, Leslie John Comrie and Alexander Craig Aitken were born and educated in New Zealand, but they worked mainly in the UK. In 1911 Rutherford made very effective use of statistics in discovering the nuclear structure of atoms; in 1937 Comrie pioneered the use of punched-card machinery for large-scale statistical analysis; and Aitken did very important work in mathematical statistics. The article focuses on a research concerning the computation of Maori Electoral Population (MEP) in New Zealand in preparation for the elections for a new electoral system Mixed Member Proportional (MMP). Such calculation was found to involve difficulties due to a belief that majority of the Maori who are eligible to vote are unenrolled and the uncertainty of who many persons of Maori descent have been enrolled under the General roll. Thus, to ease calculation, the MEP has been estimated by dividing the total Maori descent population by proportion.

High concentration ratio (C)-Herfindahl (H) index correlations found in United States studies may be biased upward by using estimated H. For New Zealand data, correlations between C and actual H are lower; the H-C relationship appears to be nonlinear. Guided by income distribution studies, a new family of H estimators--derived from H's upper and lower bounds rather than generalized assumptions about finn size distributions--is proposed. Several theories of community structure make predictions of how the processes that control species diversity should change along a gradient of decreasing stress and therefore, apart from disturbance effects, along a gradient of increasing biomass. These include the theories of 'Small species pool', 'Higher extinction rate', 'Small populations', 'Reduced patchiness' and 'Competitive dominance'. This body of theory has previously been applied to species richness, giving the Humped-back model. It has not previously been applied to evenness. We do this, and show that the same theory predicts a monotonic decrease in evenness as stress decreases and biomass increases. We test this prediction, by sampling 10 distinct vegetation types in a temperate oceanic area of New Zealand, selected to cover the widest range of ecological conditions in the region. In replicate quadrats, the photosynthetic biomass of all species was determined. Evenness was calculated by three recently recommended indices. Evenness was lower in sites with higher biomass, in superficial conformity with theory. However, a permutation test showed that this relation persisted when the biomass values were allocated to sites and species at random. This artifact is shown to be related to the approximately geometric distribution of abundances in most plant communities. There is no tendency in the observed data for evenness to decrease more strongly than expected under this null model. Our results therefore fail to support the 'Higher extinction rate', 'Small populations', 'Reduced patchiness' and 'Cumulative competition' theories on which the prediction was based.
