The contribution that fronts and frontogenesis make to subsurface chlorophyll a (CHL) concentration was investigated near the Kuroshio using data from multiple surveys across the Kuroshio during summer and fall and satellite sea surface height (SSH) data alongside high‐resolution reanalysis data set. An intensive survey was conducted during a period of frontogenesis as seen from the in‐situ and satellite‐derived velocity data as well as the analysis of the reanalysis data set. Physical and biological observation showed shoaling of the nitracline and a subsurface CHL maximum (SCM) near the evolving front. The CHL concentration at the SCM (CHLSCM) was large near the front compared with the concentration in ambient water. Sections of 10 repeat seasonal surveys also captured the frontal structure, the shoaling of the nitracline, and the increase in CHLSCM as well as their interrelationship. The CHLSCM was large, and the depth of the SCM (ZSCM) was shallow above a large horizontal density gradient (i.e., marked mesoscale frontal structure) in the ocean interior. In addition, we demonstrate that the lateral strain rate, which is a measure of frontogenesis obtained from the SSH, can be used to estimate ZSCM and CHLSCM. Frontogenesis, secondary circulation, symmetric instability, and vertical diffusion were considered to cause the nutrient supply to the subsurface layer. The surveys and analysis indicate that fronts and frontogenesis increase CHLSCM, and the physical data obtained from both in‐situ and satellite observations can be used to estimate CHL distribution in the ocean interior. This study aims to advance our knowledge in the genesis of extreme climatic events with the dual aim of improving forecasting methods while clarifying the role played by anthropogenic warming. Wavelet analysis is used to highlight the role of coherent Sea Surface Temperature (SST) anomalies produced from short-period oceanic Rossby waves resonantly forced, with two case studies: a Marine Heatwave (MHW) that occurred in the northwestern Pacific with a strong climatic impact in Japan, and an extreme flood event that occurred in Germany. Ocean–atmosphere interactions are evidenced by decomposing state variables into period bands within the cross-wavelet power spectra, namely SST, Sea Surface Height (SSH), and the zonal and meridional modulated geostrophic currents as well as precipitation height, i.e., the thickness of the layer of water produced during a day, with regard to subtropical cyclones. The bands are chosen according to the different harmonic modes of the oceanic Rossby waves. In each period band, the joint analysis of the amplitude and the phase of the state variables allow the estimation of the regionalized intensity of anomalies versus their time lag in relation to the date of occurrence of the extreme event. Regarding MHWs in the northwestern Pacific, it is shown how a warm SST anomaly associated with the northward component of the wind resulting from the low-pression system induces an SST response to latent and sensible heat transfer where the latitudinal SST gradient is steep. The SST anomaly is then shifted to the north as the phase becomes homogenized. As for subtropical cyclones, extreme events are the culmination of exceptional circumstances, some of which are foreseeable due to their relatively long maturation time. This is particularly the case of ocean–atmosphere interactions leading to the homogenization of the phase of SST anomalies that can potentially contribute to the supply of low-pressure systems. The same goes for the coalescence of distinct low-pressure systems during cyclogenesis. Some avenues are developed with the aim of better understanding how anthropogenic warming can modify certain key mechanisms in the evolution of those dynamic systems leading to extreme events. Mean dynamic topography (MDT) is crucial for research in oceanography and climatology. The optimal interpolation method (OIM) is applied to MDT modeling, where the error variance–covariance information of the observations is established. The global geopotential model (GGM) derived from GOCE (Gravity Field and Steady-State Ocean Circulation Explorer) gravity data and the mean sea surface model derived from satellite altimetry data are combined to construct MDT. Numerical experiments in the Kuroshio over Japan show that the use of recently released GOCE-derived GGM derives a better MDT compared to the previous models. The MDT solution computed based on the sixth-generation model illustrates a lower level of root mean square error (77.0 mm) compared with the ocean reanalysis data, which is 2.4 mm (5.4 mm) smaller than that derived from the fifth-generation (fourth-generation) model. This illustrates that the accumulation of GOCE data and updated data preprocessing methods can be beneficial for MDT recovery. Moreover, the results show that the OIM outperforms the Gaussian filtering approach, where the geostrophic velocity derived from the OIM method has a smaller misfit against the buoy data, by a magnitude of 10 mm/s (17 mm/s) when the zonal (meridional) component is validated. This is mainly due to the error information of input data being used in the optimal interpolation method, which may obtain more reasonable weights of observations than the Gaussian filtering method. Based on absolute geostrophic velocity, which was calculated using repeated hydrographic data of 39 cruises from 2000 to 2009 and nitrate concentrations measured in the same areas from 1964 to 2009, we obtained the temporally averaged nitrate flux (the product of velocity and nitrate concentration) and nitrate transport (integration of flux over one section) of four sections across the Kuroshio from the East China Sea (sections PN and TK) to an area south of Japan (sections ASUKA and 137E). In addition, we examined section OK east of the Ryukyu Islands in order to understand how the Ryukyu Current contributes to the transport of nutrients by the Kuroshio south of Japan. The mean nitrate flux shows a subsurface maximum core with values of 9.6, 10.6, 11.2, 10.5, and 5.7 molm-2 s-1 at sections PN, TK, ASUKA, 137E, and OK, respectively. The depth of the subsurface maximum core changes among these five sections and is approximately 400, 500, 500, 400, and 800m at sections PN, TK, ASUKA, 137E, and OK, respectively. The mean downstream nitrate transport is 204.8, 165.8, 879.3, 1230.4, and 338.6 kmol s-1 at sections PN, TK, ASUKA, 137E, and OK, respectively. The transport of nutrients in these sections suggests the presence of the Kuroshio nutrient stream from its upstream to downstream regions. The deep current structure of the Ryukyu Current (section OK) contributes to the same order of nitrate transport as does the Kuroshio from the East China Sea (section TK) to the area south of Japan; however, the former only has one-fifth the volume transport of the latter. A budget calculation suggests that the downstream increase of transported nitrate along the Kuroshio is mainly caused by the recirculation of nitrate into the Kuroshio. This conclusion, however, depends on water depth. In the upper layers (<26.5σθ), the downstream change of nitrate concentration along the Kuroshio and that from the recirculation of nitrate has a significant contribution to the downstream increase of nitrate transport along the Kuroshio. In the deep layers (>26.5σθ), the change in nitrate concentration is small and the Kuroshio recirculation dominates the downstream increase of nitrate transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MDT recovery over coastal regions is challenging, as the mean sea surface (MSS) and geoid/quasi-geoid models are of low quality. The altimetry satellites equipped with the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) altimeters provide more accurate sea surface heights than traditional ones close to the coast. We investigate the role of using the SAR-based MSS in coastal MDT recovery, and the effects introduced by the SAR altimetry data are quantified and assessed. We model MDTs based on the multivariate objective analysis, where the MSS and the recently released satellite-only global geopotential model are combined. The numerical experiments over the coast of Japan and southeastern China show that the use of the SAR-based MSS improves the local MDT. The root mean square (RMS) of the misfits between MDT-modeled with SAR altimetry data and the ocean data is lower than that derived from MDT computed without SAR data—by a magnitude of 4–8 mm. Moreover, the geostrophic velocities derived from MDT modeled with the SAR altimetry data have better fits with buoy data than those derived from MDT modeled without SAR data. Abstract: Short-term flow and water temperature fluctuations in Sagami Bay were examined using mooring and hydrographic data observed during the non-large-meander path (NLM) of the Kuroshio. In the surface layer (<150m), the flow fluctuation is predominant and is excited by the sudden strong eastward flow with speeds greater than 20cms−1 in the central part of the bay. This flow is a part of an intrusion of Kuroshio water via the Oshima West Channel into the bay and/or a cyclonic circulation in the northern part of the bay. The cyclonic circulation, which is approximately balanced under the geostrophic flow relationship, is mainly generated or enhanced by the intrusion, which is accompanied by eastward propagation of the small meander of the Kuroshio south of Japan during the transition from the nearshore non-large-meander path (nNLM) to the offshore non-large-meander path (oNLM), regardless of season. The water temperature fluctuation in the subsurface layer (∼150m) is caused by upwelling of cold deeper water and is closely related to the eastward flow fluctuations in the surface layer in the central part of the bay. Our analysis leads us the conclusion that the upwelling occurs as the response of the subsurface density field to the surface flow field under the Earth’s rotation. Additionally, the intrusion of Kuroshio water via the Oshima West Channel tends to cause, not only cyclonic circulation and upwelling in the northern part of the bay, but also the Kyucho, which is the coastal density current under the Earth’s rotation, in the bay’s coastal area during the non-large-meander path (NLM). A time series of surface geostrophic velocity is developed using satellite altimetry data during 1992-2010 for a track across the Kuroshio southeast of Kyushu, Japan. The temporal mean geostrophic velocity is estimated by combining the along-track sea level anomaly and shipboard ADCP data. This approximately 6-km resolution dataset is successful in representing the Kuroshio cross-current structure and temporal variation of the Kuroshio current-axis position during 2000-2010. The authors use this dataset to examine the winter Kuroshio path destabilization phenomenon. Its seasonal features are characterized as follows: the velocity shear on the inshore side of the Kuroshio becomes stronger and the Kuroshio path state becomes unstable from the summer to winter. This evidence is consistent with the hypothetical mechanism governing the destabilization phenomenon discussed in a previous study. Furthermore, the interannual amplitude modulation of the seasonality is examined in relation to interannual variations in the winter northerly wind over the northern Okinawa Trough and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) index. The destabilization phenomenon appears 15 times in the period 2000-2010. Ten cases are related to local wind effects, and 7 of these are also connected with the PDO index. This is probably because the winter northerly wind over the northern Okinawa Trough is regulated by the PDO signal in interannual time-scales. Abstract: Hydrographic observations based on XBT, XCTD, CTD, and ADCP were performed around the eastern mouth of the Tsugaru Strait in June 2003. This study aims to describe the hydrographic structure of the eastern mouth focusing on the subarctic Oyashio water occupying the northern part, and to discuss the intrusion pathway of this water and its modification after the intrusion. Residual and absolute geostrophic velocities show a nearly barotropic inflow (0–25cm/s) and outflow (0–80cm/s) structures in the northern and southern parts of the strait mouth, respectively. In the north, the Oyashio water, classified as the near-bottom and modified Oyashio waters in this study, inflows into the strait. It is inferred that the near-bottom water is changed to the modified Oyashio water after the intrusion by diapycnal mixing and outflow as the modified Oyashio water from underneath of the Tsugaru Warm Current (TWC) water in the deepest part of the strait mouth, together with the TWC water. Horizontal salinity distribution suggests that the near-bottom water is supplied along the isopycnal surface from the subsurface of Hidaka Bay deeper than the strait. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Closed loop mesoscale eddies were identified and tracked in the Ulleung Basin of the southwestern Japan/East Sea (JES) using the winding-angle (WA) methodology, for mapping the absolute geostrophic currents into surface streamlines of flow. The geostrophic velocity used here was the sum of the Archiving, Validation and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic data (AVISO), time variable velocity and the 1992–2007 mean geostrophic velocity. Local sampling bias was removed using the drifter observations. This WA methodology of deriving the Lagrangian path lines that drifters followed over a 7-day period was validated by individual drifter tracks and it demonstrated closed looping eddy motions. The WA method demonstrated that less than 6% of the closed streamlines appeared when drifters did not show a closed loop in their vicinity, compared to 30% of the excess detection rate by the Okubo–Weiss method of locating closed loop structures. Three groups of eddies were identified: (1) Coastal Cold and Warm Eddies, which appeared in the area between the coast of southern Korea and the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC), when a southward coastal current was present, (2) Frontal Cold and Warm Eddies, which were formed in the region of the seaward extension of the meandering EKWC, north of Ulleung Island and (3) Ulleung Warm Eddies (UWE) and Dok Cold Eddies (DCE), which appeared during meanders of the EKWC, in the Ulleung Basin. No seasonal concentration for eddy generation and eddy population was found. The average radius of eddies was about 38–60km. These were born, moved in an erratic pattern and then died in the vicinity where the EKWC separated from the coast and formed a large meander. The time-mean large meander formed meridionally concentrated bands of positive and negative relative vorticity. The cyclonic (cold) eddies tend to reside within the band of positive time-mean relative vorticity, and the anticyclonic (warm) eddies reside within the bands of negative relative vorticity. Six UWE and four warm eddies, in the Yamato Basin (about 10% of warm eddies), were sustained longer than a year. Because the large meander of the EKWC appeared to be controlled by topography, and the JES is a nearly enclosed basin with rapid flow-out to the east through the narrow Tsugaru Strait, there was little eddy energy propagation to the west. Abstract: Inter-annual variability in the magnitude and timing of the spring bloom was investigated for the Oyashio region (40 °-48 °N, 143 °E-152 °E) using 10 years (from 1998 to 2007) of satellite ocean-color data. Geostrophic currents were examined using satellite altimeter data. Early spring blooms (>1.5mgm−3) occurred in early April 2001 and late March 2002. The 2001 bloom continued for one month. Late blooms occurred from mid-May 1999, early June 2004 and late April 2006, continuing for about 1 month, 8 days and 16 days, respectively. A strong bloom (4.7mgm−3) also occurred in mid-April 1998; however, it terminated in early May. We classified the Oyashio region based on the pattern of temporal variation of Chl-a concentration from March to June. The spatio-temporal variability in Chl-a concentration during spring was different among years. The area where Chl-a concentration was highest in April was more extensive in 2001, 2002 and 2006 than usual. In 1999, the area where Chl-a concentration was highest in May was the widest among the 10 years. Mesoscale eddies and currents with high velocity were frequently observed in the area of high Chl-a concentration east of Hokkaido, propagating Coastal Oyashio Water of low salinity and low density into the oceanic region. That strengthened stratification in the surface layer. We suggest that this seaward transfer of coastal water could be one of the important factors for phytoplankton distribution in two ways: (1) horizontal advection of water with high Chl-a concentration and (2) enhancement of stratification in the oceanic region. Abstract: Flow fluctuations inside an anticyclonic eddy in summertime Funka Bay were examined using three moorings and hydrographic data. The flow pattern above a sharp pycnocline with a concave isopycnal structure during the mooring period was characterized by high mean kinetic energy and relatively low eddy kinetic energy. The ratios of eddy to mean kinetic energy were equal to or less than one, and the mean flow field and isopycnal structure indicated the existence of a stable anticyclonic eddy above the sharp pycnocline under approximate geostrophic balance. Larger flow fluctuations with periods longer than 7 days were dominant inside the eddy. The low-frequency flow fluctuations are accompanied by north to northeastward movement of the eddy with deepening of the pycnocline and spin-up of the anticyclonic circulation. The wind field over Funka Bay is characterized by bay-scale wind fluctuations. The bay-scale winds are greatly influenced by the land topography around Funka Bay, resulting in non-uniform structure with significant wind stress curl. The bay-scale wind fluctuations are termed “locally modified wind” in the present study. The locally modified wind has a negative (positive) wind stress curl in the central–northeastern (southwestern) region of Funka Bay. The north to northeastward movement of the eddy is caused by horizontal non-uniform supply of vorticity from the locally modified wind forcing by the Ekman pumping process. Through this process, the anticyclonic circulation is enhanced (weakened) in the central–northeastern (southwestern) part of the eddy, resulting in the eddy moving north to northeastward with the pycnocline deepening and spin-up of the anticyclonic circulation. Seasonal variations of the surface currents in the Tsushima Strait were investigated by analyzing the monthly mean surface currents measured with HF radar. Several new features of the surface currents have been found. One notable feature is the large, complicated seasonal variation in the current structure in the eastern channel of the strait. For example, in the southeastern and northwestern regions of the channel, southwestward countercurrents are found in summer while southeastward acrossshore currents are found in autumn and winter. The wind-driven flow (Ekman flow) as well as surface geostrophic currents are responsible for these complicated variations of the surface currents. To quantify each variation of the flow and current, the wind-driven flow was calculated from the monthly wind (more precisely, the friction velocity) using the monthly speed factor and deflection angle estimated in our previous study, and the surface geostrophic currents were then estimated by subtracting the wind-driven flow from the measured surface currents. It was found that the acrossshore currents are the wind-driven flow, and that the surface geostrophic currents flow almost in the along-shore direction, indicating the validity of the decomposition of the surface velocity into the wind-driven flow and the geostrophic currents using the speed factor and deflection angle. A real-vector empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis of the surface geostrophic currents shows a pair of eddies in the lee of Tsushima and Iki Islands as the first mode, which indicates that the southwestward countercurrents in the eastern channel are formed primarily by the incoming Tsushima Warm Current. The bottom layer in Osaka Bay was occupied in August from 1980 to 1995 by a water mass of relatively low temperature and rich in nutrients in comparison to previous and following decades. The relationship between Osaka Bay bottom temperature and Kuroshio axis location south of Kii Peninsula has been investigated using the dataset archived by Osaka Research Institute of Environment of Agriculture and Fisheries and axis-location data provided by Marine Information Research Center. The correlation between bottom temperature in the bay and Kuroshio-axis distance from Cape Shionomisaki indicates that the bottom temperature in the bay decreases when the Kuroshio axis is a long distance from the cape, and vice versa. To investigate why the temperature distribution depends on the axis location, composite temperature maps are depicted using summer temperature data from 1970 to 2005 archived in the Japan Oceanographic Data Center (JODC) after dividing all data into two groups with different axis locations. These temperature maps and temperature-salinity plots using the same JODC data suggest a scenario: cold water in the Kuroshio intermediate layer is first upwelled on the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula and thereafter moves westward as a coastal boundary current in the Kelvin wave sense of the Northern Hemisphere when the Kuroshio axis is located around 74-km distance from Cape Shionomisaki. This scenario is validated using internal Froude number maps depicted using the JODC-archived hydrographic data and geostrophic current fields. This study investigates the seasonal variations of the mixed-layer salinity anomalies(MLSAs) under the decadal variability of the Kuroshio Extension (KE) in theKuroshio-Oyashio Confluence Region (KOCR: 35–40˚ N, 140–150˚ E). Our analysis revealsthat the seasonal variation trend of the MLSA is almost opposite in the stable andunstable states of the KE. In the stable (unstable) state, the increasing (decreasing)MLSA in the KOCR reaches its maximal positive (minimal negative) value in latesummer and then decreases (increases) gradually. An exploration of the budgetof the MLSA shows that ocean dynamics explain more than half of the seasonalMLSA changes in the two states and exceed the contribution of atmospheric forcing(approximately 18%). The leading oceanic processes include advection of the meanmixed-layer salinity by anomalous Ekman and geostrophic currents and advection ofthe MLSA by mean geostrophic currents, which explain 13.80%, 12.90%, and20.73% (11.59%, 13.36%, and 24.90%) of the MLSA temporal changes in the stable(unstable) states, respectively. The difference in the MLSA between the two states isprimarily derived from the discrepancies in the anomalous ocean currents in theKOCR and south of Japan, salinity anomalies in the south of Japan, and sea surfacetemperature anomalies affecting atmospheric forcing between the two modes of the KE.Moreover, the most apparent influences are concentrated in summer and early autumnbecause of the shallower mixed layer in terms of atmospheric forcing and obviousvelocity changes and the distribution of climatological salinity for ocean processes.
