Summary: Understanding the complex interactions between trees and fungi is crucial for forest ecosystem management, yet the influence of tree mycorrhizal types, species identity, and diversity on tree‐tree interactions and their root‐associated fungal communities remains poorly understood.Our study addresses this gap by investigating root‐associated fungal communities of different arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) and ectomycorrhizal (EcM) tree species pairs (TSPs) in a subtropical tree diversity experiment, spanning monospecific, two‐species, and multi‐species mixtures, utilizing Illumina sequencing of the ITS2 region.The study reveals that tree mycorrhizal type significantly impacts the alpha diversity of root‐associated fungi in monospecific stands. Meanwhile, tree species identity's influence is modulated by overall tree diversity. Tree‐related variables and spatial distance emerged as major drivers of variations in fungal community composition. Notably, in multi‐species mixtures, compositional differences between root fungal communities of AM and EcM trees diminish, indicating a convergence of fungal communities irrespective of mycorrhizal type. Interestingly, dual mycorrhizal fungal communities were observed in these multi‐species mixtures.This research underscores the pivotal role of mycorrhizal partnerships and the interplay of biotic and abiotic factors in shaping root fungal communities, particularly in varied tree diversity settings, and its implications for effective forest management and biodiversity conservation. Spatial distribution patterns of trees are important keys to understanding forest structure and for proposing forest management solutions. Management of rainforests in Vietnam is constrained by a shortage of spatial forest data. Therefore, research was conducted in an upland secondary forest in Tuyen Quang, Vietnam to assess spatial distributions of species and quality levels, and associations between them. Tree diameter, height, coordinates and quality (good, medium and bad) were recorded in three one-hectare plots. Tree density ranged from 920-1050 trees ha-1, and there were 61-69 species ha-1. The highest percentages of good and bad trees were 25.1 and 42.9%, respectively. The habitat was determined as heterogeneous to homogeneous. The spatial distribution of all species and ecological important species was mostly random and clustered. Associations among ecological important species was mainly independent. Tree qualities were randomly distributed, but bad trees were more abundant in the understorey. Associations between tree qualities were mostly independent. The results on spatial distribution patterns and associations between species and qualities will be useful in helping to eliminate competition of trees in clusters, assist regeneration in gaps and determine options for reducing the frequency of bad trees in the future. Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of trees has always been a key task in precision forestry management and research. Due to the complex branch morphological structure of trees themselves and the occlusions from tree stems, branches and foliage, it is difficult to recreate a complete three-dimensional tree model from a two-dimensional image by conventional photogrammetric methods. In this study, based on tree images collected by various cameras in different ways, the Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) method was used for individual tree dense reconstruction and the exported point cloud models are compared with point clouds derived from photogrammetric reconstruction and laser scanning methods. The results show that the NeRF method performs well in individual tree 3D reconstruction, as it has a higher successful reconstruction rate, better reconstruction in the canopy area and requires less images as input. Compared with the photogrammetric dense reconstruction method, NeRF has significant advantages in reconstruction efficiency and is adaptable to complex scenes, but the generated point cloud tend to be noisy and of low resolution. The accuracy of tree structural parameters (tree height and diameter at breast height) extracted from the photogrammetric point cloud is still higher than those derived from the NeRF point cloud. The results of this study illustrate the great potential of the NeRF method for individual tree reconstruction, and it provides new ideas and research directions for 3D reconstruction and visualization of complex forest scenes. We have analyzed the claims made in two highly popular books, which promulgate the idea that trees possess a number of human characteristics for which there is no sound scientific evidence. A critical evaluation of the mother tree hypothesis also reveals that much of the data given in support of this concept is flawed and perhaps even non-existent. This concept is also incompatible with many well-known observations on the growth of forest trees. Moreover, there is no evidence from peer-reviewed published studies to support the claim that mature trees in forests communicate preferentially with offspring through a common mycelial network. It also remains unclear whether carbon compounds transmitted in the mycorrhizae actually enter the root tissue of the receiver tree. In any event, numerous studies indicate that the amounts of carbon transferred are physiologically insignificant. There are growing doubts about the true role of the common mycorrhizal networks (CMN or wood wide web) connecting the roots of trees in forests. We question the claims of a substantial carbon transfer from 'mother trees' to their offspring and nearby seedlings through the CMN. Recent reviews show that evidence for the 'mother tree concept' is inconclusive or absent. The origin of this concept seems to stem from a desire to humanize plant life but can lead to misunderstandings and false interpretations and may eventually harm rather than help the commendable cause of preserving forests. Tree species identification is a critical component of forest resource monitoring, and timely and accurate acquisition of tree species information is the basis for sustainable forest management and resource assessment. Airborne hyperspectral images have rich spectral and spatial information and can detect subtle differences among tree species. To fully utilize the advantages of hyperspectral images, we propose a double-branch spatial–spectral joint network based on the SimAM attention mechanism for tree species classification. This method achieved high classification accuracy on three tree species datasets (93.31% OA value obtained in the TEF dataset, 95.7% in the Tiegang Reservoir dataset, and 98.82% in the Xiongan New Area dataset). The network consists of three parts: spectral branch, spatial branch, and feature fusion, and both branches make full use of the spatial–spectral information of pixels to avoid the loss of information. In addition, the SimAM attention mechanism is added to the feature fusion part of the network to refine the features to extract more critical features for high-precision tree species classification. To validate the robustness of the proposed method, we compared this method with other advanced classification methods through a series of experiments. The results show that: (1) Compared with traditional machine learning methods (SVM, RF) and other state-of-the-art deep learning methods, the proposed method achieved the highest classification accuracy in all three tree datasets. (2) Combining spatial and spectral information and incorporating the SimAM attention mechanism into the network can improve the classification accuracy of tree species, and the classification performance of the double-branch network is better than that of the single-branch network. (3) The proposed method obtains the highest accuracy under different training sample proportions, and does not change significantly with different training sample proportions, which are stable. This study demonstrates that high-precision tree species classification can be achieved using airborne hyperspectral images and the methods proposed in this study, which have great potential in investigating and monitoring forest resources. Agarwood (Aquilaria malaccensis Lam.) (Thymelaeaceae) is valued in many cultures because of its distinctive fragrance and its use in incense, perfumery, and traditional medicine. Large-scale harvesting from natural populations caused rapid depletion of the species in the wild, and the species is now listed as "Critically Endangered" and almost extinct in the wild. The promotion of this species in agroforestry systems may pave the way for its conservation. The present study aimed to quantify the growth and coppicing ability of agarwood under monoculture and polyculture stands. Monoculture stands aged more than 20 years, and stem girth (1.37 m above ground) of 60–70 cm had the highest growth increment of 3.73 cm yr−1. Monoculture stands (>10 years old) also recorded higher number of coppicing stocks than polyculture stands. The highest coppice growth increment (4.07 cm yr−1) was recorded in the 70–80 cm stem girth in monoculture stands. Based on the results, we recommend the promotion of agarwood trees with good coppice management in forestry programs to conserve the species while also meeting the economic needs of rural communities. Predatory long-legged flies of the genus Medetera are important, but currently understudied, natural enemies of Scolytinae bark beetles such as Ips typographus. Medetera flies lay eggs on beetle-infested trees, where the developing larvae find their prey, but the chemical cues used by Medetera to locate infested trees are currently unknown. To identify odors attracting Medetera signaticornis, a species in Europe, headspace samples were collected at several time-points through different stages of I. typographus attacks on logs of Norway spruce (Picea abies). The headspace samples were analyzed using combined gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC–MS), and gas chromatography coupled with electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) to determine compounds that stimulate M. signaticornis antennae. Antennae of M. signaticornis males and females were found to detect (–)-cis-verbenol, (+)-trans-verbenol and myrtenol, which are known to be produced by bark beetles. Antennal responses were also observed for verbenene, isoterpinolene, α-pinene oxide, camphor, pinocamphone, terpinene-4-ol, myrtenal, borneol, α-terpineol, geranyl acetone, and verbenone, which are primarily produced by microorganisms, and α-pinene, α-fenchene, β-pinene, camphene, 3-carene, limonene, γ-terpinene, and terpinolene, known spruce tree compounds. In field experiments testing two synthetic blends containing 18 antennal active and two additional compounds 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol and ipsdienol we observed significant attraction of M. signaticornis within 24 h. Pentaclethra macroloba is a hyperdominant tree of the Amazon estuary and highly exploited in the region, because the oil of its seeds has medicinal properties. Little is known about the influence of the flood polymodal cycle on the population dynamics of trees in the Amazon estuary. We evaluated the influence of tree diversity, climate, soil properties and flood level on the population dynamics of P. macroloba. During five years of monitoring (from 2011 to 2015), population density and mortality, recruitment and growth rates data were obtained of three populations of P. macroloba (Mazagão Velho, Maracá and Ajuruxi areas). Four transects were used in each area and 20 permanent plots were installed in each transect to study the population dynamics. Linear models were used to evaluate the relationship between biotic/abiotic factors and population density of P. macroloba. The population density of the three populations analyzed showed a significant decrease between the period from 2011 to 2015 (F = 381.3; p < 0.001). The Maracá area had a higher mortality rate (4.50% year-1) compared to Mazagão Velho (3.24% year-1) and Ajuruxi (1.96% year-1). The recruitment rate in Ajuruxi and Mazagão Velho were 1.05% year-1 and 0.32% year-1, respectively, and in Maracá there were no recruits. Annual growth rate of the Maraca area was higher (0.93 cm-1 year-1) compared to Ajuruxi (0.75 cm-1 year-1) and Mazagão Velho (0.65 cm-1 year-1) populations. The flood level had a negative and significant correlation with the population density of P. macroloba in the Maracá (F = 39.7; p < 0.01), Ajuruxi (F = 9.9; p < 0.05) and Mazagão Velho (F = 19.6; p < 0.05) areas. Only the Ajuruxi area had a positive and significant correlation with arboreal richness (β = 0.14; p < 0.05). The flood gradient is an environmental driver that regulates the population growth of P. macroloba. Tree interactions have long been recognised as key biotic interactions in forest ecosystems and their spatial patterns can improve our understanding of forest structure and dynamics. In this study, we explored the intraspecific and interspecific interactions of Betula platyphylla Suk. (birch) and Larix principis-rupprechtii Mayr. (larch) in mountainous forests of northern Hebei, China. The mark correlation function based on tree height was employed in this analysis. Our results showed that the intraspecific interactions in pure birch and larch stands were mainly competition, while in the mixed birch–larch stand, they were mainly facilitation. The intraspecific interaction between saplings and adults changed from competition in the pure birch stand to facilitation in the mixed stand (4.5 < r < 6 m) and an opposite variation was observed for the interaction between birch juveniles and adults (2 < r < 3.5 m). The interspecific interaction between birch and larch mainly appeared as competition, while facilitation between birch saplings/adults and larch juveniles was significant. In contrast to previous studies, our results revealed that the coexistence of birch and larch in mixed forests significantly regulated tree interactions, including competition and facilitation. Africa is covered with extensive woodlands, savannas and rainforests. The tree cover of these biomes has been undergoing substantial changes in recent decades. However, the dynamics of forests in Africa are currently unclear, particularly in the woodlands and savanna areas covered by sparse trees. Here, we assessed the spatio-temporal trend of African forests from 2000 to 2020, using a 250-m resolution fractional tree cover product that can capture the variation of forest density in the widespread mixed vegetation landscapes of the continent. The tree cover trends, interannual change and hotspots of forest gain and loss were evaluated. Results showed that the African forest area increased at a rate of 3.59 million ha/year over the study period, reaching 589 million ha in 2020. Considerable forest gain and loss both occurred in Africa. The net change rate in woodlands' forest area was the fastest (2.28 million ha/year), followed by rainforests (0.80 million ha/year) and savannas (0.34 million ha/year). Hotspots of forest gain were concentrated in the north belt of woodlands and savannas, while forest loss primarily clustered in East and South Africa. The knowledge of forest populations dynamics after logging and under the events of silvicultural treatments is important to establish management and conservation strategies. We aimed to show results of structural changes of tree species populations (from seedlings to adult trees), during 27 years in an area where reduced impact logging and silvicultural treatments were performed. In 1985 timber of trees with DBH ≥ 60 cm was logged from 400 ha, considering three volume reduction intensities (15, 25, 35%). In 1994, thinning was applied considering individuals with DBH ≥ 15 cm, and four intensities of basal area reduction (0, 30, 50, 70%). Twelve statistical treatments were performed considering the thinning combined with harvest intensities. Trees, saplings, sticks and seedlings were monitored and measured in 40 permanent sample plots. The plots were assessed in 1984, 1986, 1994, 1996, 2004 and 2011. Statistical analyses were performed using generalized linear models. Our results show that forest structure was not altered significantly even in areas where the trees basal area reduction was higher. There was no significant influence on the establishment of the main species in the area and in dynamics of the remnant forest after logging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Main stand characteristics and tree species composition were studied in managed and old-growth Oriental beech (Fagus orientalis L.) forests in eastern Georgia (Caucasus). Oriental beech dominates both the regeneration layer and the upper story in old-growth forest. In managed forests, Caucasian hornbeam (Carpinus orientalis) and Oriental beech co-dominate the tree layer as well as the regeneration layer. Tree species diversity and deadwood proportion are higher in managed forests than in old-growth forests. However, the absolute deadwood proportion is similar in both studied forest types. Hence, deadwood proportion is not a suitable indicator to assess the naturalness or management intensity of forests in the study area. The observed proportions of Caucasian hornbeam in managed forests raise concerns about the sustainable use of beechwood in the long term. Harvesting hornbeam and smaller removals of beech are recommended to maintain the uneven-aged forest ecosystem, with Oriental beech as the dominant tree species. Detection and classification of crown trees properties and assessment of their health status have raised much interest for the scientists from the forest and environmental sciences due to their essential role in landscape ecology and forestry management. The present study proposes a method based on consumer-based UAVs and deep learning techniques for detecting individual orchard trees and assessing key properties characterising their health status. In the proposed scheme, the Mask R-CNN model is used for detecting and mapping each individual tree morphometrical property such as the height and the crown width. Tree's health assessment is based on the use of vegetation indices such as the Visual Atmospheric Resistance Index (VARI) and Green Leaf Index (GLI), computed from the visible spectrum camera mounted on the UAV platform. The use of the proposed approach is demonstrated at five different orchard tree species, namely plum, apricot, walnut, olive, and almond, located in Romania and Greece, computing a series of statistical metrics. Results returned outstanding ability of the algorithm's performance to map the individual trees and assess their health for four out of the five tree species (plum, walnut, apricot, almond) and satisfactory results for the fifth (olive trees). Overall, the study findings highlighted the promising potential of the proposed methodological framework and its scalable potential for wider applicability as a low-cost, effective solution in mapping individual trees properties and health conditions in the field. For the provision of various ecosystem services in steep terrain, such as protection against natural hazards, a forest must be managed, which often requires the use of cable yarders. The design of a cable road is a complex and demanding task that also includes the search for appropriate support and anchor trees. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether and with what reliability potential support trees for cable yarding can be detected using remote sensing data. The detection of potential support trees was tested using 48 method combinations on 10 test plots of the Experimental Forest Management project in cable yarder terrain in the Swiss Alps in the Canton of Grisons. The most suitable method combinations used a Gaussian filter and a local maxima algorithm. On average, they had an extraction rate of 108.9–124.5% (root mean square, RMS) and a mean commission error of 66.0–67.2% (RMS). The correctly detected trees deviated horizontally by an average of 1.8 to 1.9 m from the position of the reference trees. The difference in tree heights was 1.1 to 1.6 m. However, for the application of single tree detection to support cable road planning in steep and complex terrain, too few potential support trees were detected. Digital twins of forests (trees) are computational virtual recreations of forests (trees) in which the entity distributions and physical processes in real-world forests (trees) are duplicated. It is expected that conventional forest science and management can be undertaken in a digital twin of forests (trees) if the recreation of a real-world forest (tree) has accurate and comprehensive enough information. However, due to the various differences between the current tree model and the real tree, these envisioned digital twins of the forests (trees) stay a theoretical concept. In this study, we developed a processing strategy that partially integrated computational virtual measurement (CVM) process into the tree modeling workflow. Owing to the feature of CVM, partial tree skeleton reconstruction procedures were considered to have higher mechanical objectivity compared to conventional mathematical modeling methods. The reason was that we developed a novel method called virtual diameter tape (VDT), which could provide a certain percentage of modeling elements using CVM. Technically, VDT was able to virtually measure diameters and spatial distribution of cross-sectional area of trees, including the basal area, from point clouds. VDT simulated the physical scenario of diameter tapes, observing point clouds of trees. Diameter and the cross-sectional area of stem and branches were obtained by two consecutive physical measurement processes, one in the forest sample site and another in the virtual space. At the same time, VDT obtained better or a similar accuracy compared to the mathematical methods, i.e., Hough transform-based methods, using the same data sets. The root-mean-square deviation (RMSE) of retrieval of diameter at breast height (DBH) using VDT was 1.02 cm, while DBH obtained from three conventional methods varied from 1.29 cm to 1.73 cm. Based on VDT measurement results, tree skeleton reconstruction and actual forest scenario rendering of our sample plots were further implemented. Disturbances in forest ecosystems are expected to increase by the end of the twenty-first century. An understanding of these disturbed areas is critical to defining management measures to improve forest resilience. While some studies emphasize the importance of quick salvage logging, others emphasize the importance of the deadwood for biodiversity. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing is playing an important role to acquire information in these areas through the structure-from-motion (SfM) photogrammetry process. However, the technique faces challenges due to the fundamental principle of SfM photogrammetry as a passive optical method. In this study, we investigated a UAV video-based technology called full motion video (FMV) to identify fallen and snapped trees in a windthrow area. We compared the performance of FMV and an orthomosaic, created by the SfM photogrammetry process, to manually identify fallen and snapped trees, using a ground survey as a reference. The results showed that FMV was able to identify both types of damaged trees due to the ability of video to deliver better context awareness compared to the orthomosaic, although providing lower position accuracy. In addition to its processing being simpler, FMV technology showed great potential to support the interpretation of conventional UAV remote sensing analysis and ground surveys, providing forest managers with fast and reliable information about damaged trees in windthrow areas. • This study conducted a randomized experiment to change property systems in Ethiopia. • The study examined the management efforts of the mixed management system. • The intervention stimulated intensive management (pruning, guarding, and watering). • The treated members extracted more timber and forest products than non-treated ones. • The extraction of nontimber products unrelated to tree management did not change. We argue that while community forest management is effective in protecting forest resources, as argued by Ostrom, such management may fail to provide the proper incentives to nurture such resources because the benefits of forest management are collectively shared. This study proposes a mixed private and community management system characterized by communal protection of community-owned forest areas and individual management of individually owned trees as a desirable arrangement for timber forest management in developing countries. By conducting a randomized experiment in Ethiopia, we found that the mixed management system significantly stimulated intensive forest management activities, including pruning, guarding, and watering. Furthermore, more timber trees and forest products were extracted from the treated areas, which are byproducts of tree management (e.g., thinned trees and pruned branches). Despite the importance of financial outcomes to stand-level forest management decision-making, long-term assessments are rare. We compared the quality and value of mixed, northern conifer (Picea–Abies–Tsuga) stands in Maine, USA, treated with a range of silvicultural systems and exploitive cuttings for 65 years. Ten replicated treatments — single-tree selection and uniform shelterwood systems, commercial clearcutting, fixed and guiding diameter-limit cutting, and no cutting — were assessed for quality and value of standing and harvested trees. Selection systems resulted in good tree quality and high stand value, particularly when applied on a short cutting cycle, but small harvest volumes were not always commercially operable. Shelterwood system resulted in good tree quality, but changes in species values over time influenced financial outcomes. In contrast, commercial clearcutting and fixed diameter-limit cutting resulted in poor tree quality and low residual stand value after multiple harvests. Guiding diameter-limit cutting resulted in high stand value and is more appropriately characterized as a silvicultural system than exploitive harvesting when applied with harvest volume limits and seed tree retention. Overall, treatments focused on short-term financial gain led to degraded stand conditions, while those that sought to grow high-quality trees resulted in desirable outcomes over the long term. To understand spatial effects, it is critical to characterise the spatial distributions and patterns of the aboveground biomass (AGB) of individual trees and the biomass of their components (stem, bark, branches and foliage). This study investigated the spatial effects by examining the AGB of individual trees and the biomass of their components in the context of typical sub-tropical tree species in Yunnan, China, including a Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis natural forest (PN), a Pinus kesiya var. langbianensis plantation (PP), and a Eucalyptus spp. plantation (EP), using datasets for three clear-cutting plots. Ripley's L function was employed to identify the spatial distributions and patterns of the AGB of individual trees and the biomass of their components. Then, Global and Local Moran's I indices were utilised to analyse spatial autocorrelation, with Intra-group variance being calculated to quantify spatial heterogeneity. This led to following findings. Firstly, with increasing distance, the spatial heterogeneity of the three stands increased before stabilising at a distance of 10 m. Secondly, excluding bark, all components of the tree biomass in the PN stand exhibited significant dispersion. In contrast, all the components in the PP stand showed significant dispersion. The spatial distributions and patterns of trees and their biomass in the EP stand indicated the coexistence of clustering and dispersion. Moreover, the significant spatial autocorrelations of tree AGB and components biomass could be noticed but depending on the stands, components and distances. Background and Aims Terrestrial LiDAR scanning (TLS) data are of great interest in forest ecology and management because they provide detailed 3-D information on tree structure. Automated pipelines are increasingly used to process TLS data and extract various tree- and plot-level metrics. With these developments comes the risk of unknown reliability due to an absence of systematic output control. In the present study, we evaluated the estimation errors of various metrics, such as wood volume, at tree and plot levels for four automated pipelines. Methods We used TLS data collected from a 1-ha plot of tropical forest, from which 391 trees >10 cm in diameter were fully processed using human assistance to obtain control data for tree- and plot-level metrics. Key Results Our results showed that fully automated pipelines led to median relative errors in the quantitative structural model (QSM) volume ranging from 39 to 115 % at the tree level and 10 to 134 % at the 1-ha plot level. For tree-level metrics, the median error for the crown-projected area ranged from 46 to 59 % and that for the crown-hull volume varied from 72 to 88 %. This result suggests that the tree isolation step is the weak link in automated pipeline methods. We further analysed how human assistance with automated pipelines can help reduce the error in the final QSM volume. At the tree scale, we found that isolating trees using human assistance reduced the error in wood volume by a factor of 10. At the 1-ha plot scale, locating trees with human assistance reduced the error by a factor of 3. Conclusions Our results suggest that in complex tropical forests, fully automated pipelines may provide relatively unreliable metrics at the tree and plot levels, but limited human assistance inputs can significantly reduce errors. 1. Woody species' requirements and environmental sensitivity change from seedlings to adults, a process referred to as ontogenetic shift. Such shifts can be increased by climate change. To assess the changes in the difference of temperature experienced by seedlings and adults in the context of climate change, it is essential to have reliable climatic data over long periods that capture the thermal conditions experienced by the individuals throughout their life cycle. 2. Here we used a unique cross-European database of 2,195 pairs of resurveyed forest plots with a mean intercensus time interval of 37 years. We inferred macroclimatic temperature (free-air conditions above tree canopies--representative of the conditions experienced by adult trees) and microclimatic temperature (representative of the juvenile stage at the forest floor, inferred from the relationship between canopy cover, distance to the coast and below-canopy temperature) at both surveys. We then address the long-term, large-scale and multitaxa dynamics of the difference between the temperatures experienced by adults and juveniles of 25 temperate tree species. 3. We found significant, but species-specific, variations in the perceived temperature (calculated from presence/absence data) between life stages during both surveys. Additionally, the difference of the temperature experienced by the adult versus juveniles significantly increased between surveys for 8 of 25 species. We found evidence of a relationship between the difference of temperature experienced by juveniles and adults over time and one key functional trait (i.e. leaf area). Together, these results suggest that the temperatures experienced by adults versus juveniles became more decoupled over time for a subset of species, probably due to the combination of climate change and a recorded increase of canopy cover between the surveys resulting in higher rates of macroclimate than microclimate warming. 4. Synthesis. We document warming and canopy-cover induced changes in the difference of the temperature experienced by juveniles and adults. These findings have implications for forest management adaptation to climate change such as the promotion of tree regeneration by creating suitable species-specific microclimatic conditions. Old trees are important for biodiversity, and the process of their identification is a critical process in their conservation. However, determining the tree age by core extraction, ring counts, and eventually, cross-dating by means of dendrochronology is labor-intensive and expensive. Here we examine the alternative method of estimating determining tree age by visual characteristics for old Norway spruce and Scots pine trees. We used forest stands previously identified as "Old tree habitats" by visual criteria in Norwegian boreal forests. The efficiency of this method was tested using pairwise comparison of the age of core samples from trees within these sites, and within neighboring sites. Age regression models were constructed from morphological traits and site variables to investigate how accurately old trees can be detected. Cored trees in the Old-tree habitats were on average 41.9 years older than compared to a similar selection of trees from nearby mature forests. Several characteristics such as bark structure, stem taper and visible growth eccentricities can be used to identify old Norway spruce and Scots pine trees. Old trees were often found on less productive sites. Due to the wide range of environments included in the study, we suggest that these findings can be generalized to other parts of the boreal zone. The paper deals with the application of individual simple and second generation indexes - Laspeyres price index (Ip), Laspeyres volume index (Iq). The individual statistical indexes compare parameters, namely the volume of harvested trees and the economic evaluation of forest management for the time periods 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. Forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) balance, but their biomass has decreased globally mainly because of deforestation and a reduction in forest cover. However, little is known about the C stock of tree biomass related to environmental factors in the remnant forest patches. Thus, the present study aimed at assessing the status of C stocks of tree biomass using an allometric equation in Kibate Forest (Ethiopia). Sixty–six plots (30×30 m) were laid out at 100 m interval distance along the altitudinal gradients in five transects. The results revealed that the highest C stocks (67.4%) per species were contributed by Juniperus procera, Ilex mitis var. mitis, Nuxia congesta, and Olea europaea subsp. cuspidata. The mean total tree biomass was 91.9 ± 10.01 Mg ha−1. The mean total C stock was 45.9 ± 5.17 Mg ha−1, out of which 38.3 ± 4.31 and 7.7 ± 0.91 Mg ha−1 were stored in above- and belowground C pools, respectively. Anthropogenic factors were negatively associated with the C-stock distribution in the study area. Thus, the status of the C stock of tree biomass related to anthropogenic factors indicates that sustainable forest management practice is needed in the study area to conserve biodiversity and mitigate climate change. In 1954, archaeologists James Allen Lancaster and Don Watson and dendrochronologist Edmund Schulman asserted that a small grove of Douglas-fir (Pseudotsugamenziesii [Mirbel] Franco var. glauca [Beissener] Franco) trees in Navajo Canyon on the west side of Chapin Mesa in Mesa Verde National Park contained evidence of stone-axe-cut tree limbs. In 1965, archaeologists Robert Nichols and David Smith published an article entitled "Evidence of Prehistoric Cultivation of Douglas-Fir Trees at Mesa Verde," in which they supported the Lancaster/Watson/Schulman assertion with tree-ring dates from suspected stone-axe-cut limbs. If correct, Nichols and Smith (1965) document the only trees in the entire U.S. Southwest that contain ancient stone-axe-cut stubs and evidence of precolumbian forest management. Rather than accept their interpretations at face value, we attempt to replicate their dates through the (re)analysis of archived and recently collected tree-ring samples, and through a controlled analysis and comparison of archived and published records. We could not confirm their results, and we have no option but to reject their claim that Schulman Grove contains evidence of precolumbian tree manipulation by Ancestral Puebloan inhabitants of Mesa Verde. Natural forests contain a large amount of deadwood, which is a key contributor to biodiversity, especially by providing dynamic habitats and resources for a huge variety of invertebrates. However, for managing forest biodiversity we need to better understand what drives the dynamics of invertebrate communities in deadwood. We hypothesized that the invertebrate communities in logs will converge from initial to middle decomposition stage among tree species and forest stands as the differentiating role of bark diminishes and xylem traits converge during decay. We investigated invertebrate communities in decomposing logs of ten tree species over 4 years in the "tree cemetery" LOGLIFE experiment in two contrasting forests in the Netherlands. The predominant faunal groups studied were Annelida (earthworms), Isopoda (woodlice), Chilopoda (centipedes), Diplopoda (millipedes), Diptera (flies, midges) and Coleoptera (beetles). We demonstrated that (1) tree species, decay stages and incubation forests all had effects on the invertebrate communities; (2) community compositions of fauna in logs first were very dissimilar and then became more similar among tree species through the decay years; and (3) this converging pattern of faunal community dynamics also manifested itself, both across and within given tree species, between two contrasting forests over decomposition time. Thus, invertebrate communities generally converged during deadwood decay, which adds fundamental insights into the role of interacting drivers of community succession. These findings also highlight that, both within and among forests, more functionally different tree species and logs in different decay stages, will support relatively high biodiversity of invertebrate communities; these patterns may inform forest management strategies aimed at maximizing biodiversity. Pulau Aur is located in the South China Sea ca. 74 km east of Mersing, Johor. The terrain of Pulau Aur, which covers an area of ca. 19 km2, is almost entirely composed of granite rocks and several short beaches providing a unique diversity of flora on the island. A study of flora that focuses on the species of seed plants mainly trees has identified as many as 135 species belonging to 104 genera and 47 families in the primary, regenerated, secondary forests and sandy coastal vegetation. It is hoped that the information from the specimens collected and recorded can be used as a reference and help other researchers as well as stakeholders in ecotourism management and forest conservation plan. Forests occupy a large amount of territory in the contemporary state of Sikkim. However, their ubiquitousness should not be interpreted as a signal that Sikkimese communities are inherently environmentally friendly. Historically trees have been exploited as fuel for human use; but they have also fueled forms of interspecies relationality and sustained ecosystems, health for multiple species, folklore, history and ritual life. Just as trees have different parts—the roots, the trunk, the branches, and the foliage—so do Sikkimese relationships with trees. In this paper, I will draw on Buddhist ritual literature, oral sources related to traditional forest management, and state-level forest management materials to examine the complexity of tree traditions in conversation with other global examples of tree veneration traditions. Tree functional traits together with processes such as forest regeneration, growth, and mortality affect forest and tree structure. Forest management inherently impacts these processes. Moreover, forest structure, biodiversity, resilience, and carbon uptake can be sustained and enhanced with forest management activities. To assess structural complexity of individual trees, comprehensive and quantitative measures are needed, and they are often lacking for current forest management practices. Here, we utilized 3D information from individual Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) trees obtained with terrestrial laser scanning to, first, assess effects of forest management on structural complexity of individual trees and, second, understand relationship between several tree attributes and structural complexity. We studied structural complexity of individual trees represented by a single scale‐independent metric called "box dimension." This study aimed at identifying drivers affecting structural complexity of individual Scots pine trees in boreal forest conditions. The results showed that thinning increased structural complexity of individual Scots pine trees. Furthermore, we found a relationship between structural complexity and stem and crown size and shape as well as tree growth. Thus, it can be concluded that forest management affected structural complexity of individual Scots pine trees in managed boreal forests, and stem, crown, and growth attributes were identified as drivers of it. The enrichment of deadwood is essential for the conservation of saproxylic biodiversity in managed forests. However, existing strategies focus on a cost‐intensive increase of deadwood amount, while largely neglecting increasing deadwood diversity.Deadwood objects, that is logs and branches, from six tree species were experimentally sun exposed, canopy shaded and artificially shaded for 4 years, after which the alpha‐, beta‐ and gamma‐diversity of saproxylic beetles, wood‐inhabiting fungi and spiders were analysed. Analyses of beta‐diversity included the spatial distance between exposed deadwood objects. A random‐drawing procedure was used to identify the combination of tree species and sun exposure that yielded the highest gamma‐diversity at a minimum of exposed deadwood amount.In sun‐exposed plots, species numbers in logs were higher than in shaded plots for all taxa, while in branches we observed the opposite for saproxylic beetles. Tree species affected the species numbers only of saproxylic beetles and wood‐inhabiting fungi. The beta‐diversity of saproxylic beetles and wood‐inhabiting fungi among logs was influenced by sun exposure and tree species, but beta‐diversity of spiders by sun exposure only. For all saproxylic taxa recorded in logs, differences between communities increased with increasing spatial distance.A combination of canopy‐shaded Carpinus logs and sun‐exposed Populus logs resulted in the highest species numbers of all investigated saproxylic taxa among all possible combinations of tree species and sun‐exposure treatments.Synthesis and applications. We recommend incorporating the enrichment of different tree species and particularly the variation in sun exposure into existing strategies of deadwood enrichment. Based on the results of our study, we suggest to combine the logs of softwood broadleaf tree species (e.g. Carpinus, Populus), hardwood broadleaf tree species (e.g. Quercus) and coniferous tree species (e.g. Pinus) under different conditions of sun exposure and distribute them spatially in a landscape to maximize the beneficial effects on overall diversity. An important challenge for silvicultural practices is the conservation of tree diversity while fulfilling the traditional objectives of forest management, most notably timber harvesting. The purpose of this study was to compare the tree diversity before and after the application of silvicultural treatments in a temperate forest in northern Mexico. Fifteen experimental plots, each measuring 2500 m2, were established to evaluate the immediate effect of four silvicultural treatments. These treatments were identified by their levels of management: intensive (clearcut, removal 100%), semi-intensive (removal of 59–61% of basal area), conservative (removal of 29–31% of basal area), and a control group. New forest guidelines, in contrast to conventional approaches, were applied to the semi-intensive and conservative treatments based on health and diversity conditions. Basal area, canopy cover, tree and total volume were measured in each plot. The Importance Value Index, alpha diversity, and evenness were estimated before and after treatments. Eighteen species belonging to five genera and five families were found in the study area. The species with the highest ecological values were Pinus durangensis, P. teocote, Quercus sideroxyla, and Quercus convallata with IVI numbers between 13.6 and 24.5%. Alpha diversity was intermediate (Margalef: 2.9 to 3.8), while dominance and evenness were above average compared to other studies (Simpson: 0.69 to 0.77; Shannon-Wiener: 1.44 to 1.6; Pielou: 0.76 to 0.85). The species evenness index in the conservative treatment was high (Sorensen, Jaccard, quantitative Sorensen and Morisita-Horn; 88 to 99%), although abundance decreased. Overall, there were no significant differences in IVI values and diversity indicators before and after treatments, with the exception of the clearcut treatment. When associating the diversity indices with stand variables, only the Pielou's evenness index showed a significant relationship between them. We concluded that both the conservative and semi-intensive treatments did not generate significant changes in tree diversity, but the former had slightly higher alpha diversity indices. Forests are the most diverse and productive terrestrial ecosystems on Earth, so sustainably managing them for the future is a major global challenge. Yet, our understanding of forest diversity relies almost exclusively on the study of trees. Here, we demonstrate unequivocally that other growth forms (shrubs, lianas, herbs, epiphytes) make up the majority of vascular plant species in both tropical and temperate forests. By comparing the relative distribution of species richness among plant growth forms for over 3,400 species in 18 forests in the Americas, we construct the first high‐resolution quantification of plant growth form diversity across two ecologically important regions at a near‐continental scale. We also quantify the physical distribution of plant species among forest layers, that is, where among the vertical strata plants ultimately live their adult lives, and show that plants are strongly downshifted in temperate forests vs. tropical forests. Our data illustrate a previously unquantified fundamental difference between tropical and temperate forests: what plant growth forms are most speciose, and where they ultimately live in the forest. Recognizing these differences requires that we re‐focus ecological research and forest management plans to encompass a broader suite of plant growth forms. Wildfires may have serious and long-lasting impacts in Mediterranean Basin oak forests. Although cork oak (Quercus suber L.) is usually considered a highly fire-resistant tree species, post-fire recovery is not guaranteed. We assessed the mortality and regeneration of 729 cork oak trees that burned and were cut in six sites with the objective of identifying the main factors affecting the short- to medium-term post-fire recovery. We used linear mixed models to investigate potential relationships among tree stump status at the end of the second and fifth growing seasons and several tree- and site-level variables. Overall tree mortality in the second year was 44% and was negatively affected by bark thickness and positively affected by root exposure, trunk injuries, and diameter, in decreasing order of importance. Between the second and fifth years, mortality increased to 53%, but this increase was only observed in sites with high grazing pressure. Grazing also had a strong negative impact on the growth of basal resprouts, thereby compromising tree recovery. The results give useful information on the need for application of adequate forest management practices (particularly avoiding debarking injuries, soil erosion, and grazing pressure) to increase the resilience of these ecosystems and reduce the negative economic and ecological impacts of wildfires. Spatial structure is the theoretical basis for studying sustainable management of forests. The spatial structure of pinus koraiensis mixed broad-leaved forest was studied in Shanhetun forestry bureau by using mingling index,neighborhood comparison,angle index and competition index. The results showed that the dominant tree species were acer mono,ulmus pumila,fraxinus mandshurica and pinus koraiensis,etc.,with the percentage of 74. 46% of the total quantity of trees. Dominant tree species occupied more spatial niche with lower competition indexes( 1. 22 ～ 4. 71). The spatial isolation degree of trees in different plots was high,and the average mingling index was 0. 77. The dominant tree species showed competitive equilibrium with the neighborhood comparison between 0. 38 ～0. 71,and little difference was founded in the frequency of the neighborhood comparison among different plots. The frequency of the mean angle indexes of six plots appeared higher on 0. 5 than other angle indexes,with the frequency of 44. 07%,55. 56%,40. 98%,45. 24%,39. 22% and 63. 16%,and showed that most forest trees belonged to random distribution. A small number of trees were changed from random state to aggregate state with mean angle index of 0. 75 and 1. In conclusion,the species composition of pinus koraiensis mixed broad-leaved forest was abundant and its spatial isolation degree was high,the whole forest was in a competitive equilibrium showing a random distribution; the dominant tree species were mainly clustered and distributed,and appropriate management measures should be taken to achieve the goal of rational stand structure. Spatially explicit information on tree species composition of any forest provides valuable information to forest managers as well as to nature conservationists. In this study, the potential of three spaceborne sensors: (1) Landsat-8, (2) Sentinel-2, and (3) IRS-Pansharpened were compared by applying Random Forest (RF) classification algorithms to classify the three most common tree species: Pinus taeda, Alnus spp., and Populus spp., in Hyrcanian forest of Iran. Three RF models with optimized parameters of mtry and ntree were used for the classification of trees species. Based on our Overall Accuracy (OA) and Kappa Coefficient (KC) analysis, IRS-Pansharpened data showed the highest accuracy (OA = 84.9% and KC = 79.7%), followed by Landsat-8 (OA = 78.2% and KC = 70.6%), and Sentinel-2 (OA = 77% and KC = 70%). According to the Mean Decrease in Accuracy (MDA) criterion delivered as an output of RF, the near-IR spectral band was found on the top rank (high variable importance) as compared to all other spectral bands for tree species classification. The findings of this study can be used by the researcher, forest managers, economists and policy and decision makers in the context of sustainable forest management of Hyrcanian forest resources. Fire regime shifts are driven by climate and natural vegetation changes, but can be strongly affected by human land management. Yet, it is poorly known how humans have influenced fire regimes prior to active wildfire suppression. Among the last 250 years, the human contribution to the global increase in fire occurrence during the mid-19th century is especially unclear, as data sources are limited. Here, we test the extent to which forest management has driven fire regime shifts in a temperate forest landscape. We combine multiple fire proxies (macroscopic charcoal and fire-related biomarkers) derived from highly resolved lake sediments (i.e., 3–5 years per sample), and apply a new statistical approach to classify source area- and temperature-specific fire regimes (biomass burnt, fire episodes). We compare these records with independent climate and vegetation reconstructions. We find two prominent fire regime shifts during the 19th and 20th centuries, driven by an adaptive socio-ecological cycle in human forest management. Although individual fire episodes were triggered mainly by arson (as described in historical documents) during dry summers, the biomass burnt increased unintentionally during the mid-19th century due to the plantation of flammable, fast-growing pine tree monocultures needed for industrialization. State forest management reacted with active fire management and suppression during the 20th century. However, pine cover has been increasing since the 1990s and climate projections predict increasingly dry conditions, suggesting a renewed need for adaptations to reduce the increasing fire risk. The capacity of forests to recover after disturbance, i.e., their resilience, determines their ability to persist and function over time. Many variables, natural and managerial, affect forest resilience. Thus, understanding their effects is critical for the development of sound forest conservation and management strategies, especially in the context of ongoing global environmental changes. We conducted a representative review, meta-analysis, of the forest literature in this topic (search terms “forest AND resilience”). We aimed to identify natural conditions that promote or jeopardize resilience, assess the efficacy of post-disturbance management practices on forest recovery, and evaluate forest resilience under current environmental changes. We surveyed more than 2,500 articles and selected the 156 studies (724 observations) that compared and quantified forest recovery after disturbance under different contexts. Context of recovery included: resource gradients (moisture and fertility), post-disturbance biomass reduction treatments, species richness gradients, incidence of a second disturbance, and disturbance severity. Metrics of recovery varied from individual tree growth and reproduction, to population abundance, to species richness and cover. Analyses show management practices only favored recovery through increased reproduction (seed production) and abundance of recruitment stages. Higher moisture conditions favored recovery, particularly in dry temperate regions; and in boreal forests, this positive effect increased with regional humidity. Biomass reduction treatments were only effective in increasing resilience after a drought. Early recruiting plant stages benefited from increased severity, while disturbance severity was associated with lower recovery of remaining adult trees. This quantitative review provides insight into the natural conditions and management practices under which forest resilience is enhanced and highlights conditions that could jeopardize future resilience. Tree diversity is increasingly acknowledged as an important driver of insect herbivory. However, there is still a debate about the direction of associational effects that can range from associational resistance (i.e., less damage in mixed stands than in monocultures) to the opposite, associational susceptibility. Discrepancies among published studies may be due to the overlooked effect of spatially dependent processes such as tree location within forests. We addressed this issue by measuring crown defoliation and leaf damage made by different guilds of insect herbivores on oaks growing among conspecific versus heterospecific neighbors at forest edges versus interior, in two closed sites in SW France forests. Overall, oaks were significantly less defoliated among heterospecific neighbors (i.e., associational resistance), at both forest edge and interior. At the leaf level, guild diversity and leaf miner herbivory significantly increased with tree diversity regardless of oak location within stands. Other guilds showed no clear response to tree diversity or oak location. We showed that herbivore response to tree diversity varied among insect feeding guilds but not between forest edges and interior, with inconsistent patterns between sites. Importantly, we show that oaks were more defoliated in pure oak plots than in mixed plots at both edge and forest interior and that, on average, defoliation decreased with increasing tree diversity from one to seven species. We conclude that edge conditions could be interacting with tree diversity to regulate insect defoliation, but future investigations are needed to integrate them into the management of temperate forests, notably by better understanding the role of the landscape context. The conservation of tropical forests is recognized as one of the most important challenges for forestry, ecology and politics. Besides strict protection, the sustainable management of natural forests should be enhanced as a key part of the foundation for the maintenance of tropical rain forest ecosystems. Due to methodological reasons it has been complicated to attain reliable growth data to plan sustainable felling cycles and rotation periods. Tree ring analyses enable the estimation of growth rates over the entire life span of trees and their age as well as giving hints from forest dynamics in previous centuries. For tree ring analysis, stem disk samples were taken from three important commercial tree species (Cariniana micrantha, Caryocar villosum and Manilkara huberi) in the upland (terra firme) forests of the Precious Woods Amazon logging company near Itacoatiara, Brazil. Based on radiocarbon estimates of individual growth zones, the annual nature of tree rings was proven for the three species. Tree rings were measured and the results used together with height estimates to model diameter, height and volume growth. The age of the eldest tree, a C. micrantha, was 585 yrs with 165 cm in diameter. The species’ diameter increments range from 0.20±0.12 cm yr-1 to 0.29±0.08 cm yr-1. At first sight, this is considerably lower than increments reported from other Amazonian or African timber species. Considering the respective wood density there is no significant difference in growth performance of dominant timber species across continents. The interpretation of lifetime tree ring curves indicate differences in shadow tolerance among species, the persistence of individuals in the understory for up to 150 years and natural stand dynamics without major disturbances. Management criteria should be adapted for the measured growth rates as they differed considerably from the Brazilian standards fixed by laws (felling cycle of 25–35 years and a common minimum logging diameter of 50 cm). Continuity in forest habitats is crucial for species diversity and richness. Ancient Scots pine forests are usually under forest management, which disturbs vegetation and causes differentiation in terms of tree stand age. To date, vegetation variability in ancient Scots pine forests has not been examined based on tree stand age classes. In the present study the continuity of a large Scots pine forest complex was investigated, and a system of sampling plots established in five tree stand age classes: initiation stands (4–10 years), young stands (20–35 years), middle-aged stands (45–60 years), pre-mature stands (70–85 years) and mature stands (95–110 years). Species composition, including vascular plants, bryophytes and lichens, on soil, tree trunks, and coarse woody debris, was analyzed. Based on existing classifications systems, forest species and ancient forest species groups were distinguished. In the studied ancient Scots pine forests the species pool and richness were relatively low, and the vegetation consisted mostly of generalist species. Cryptogams, which can grow on diverse substrates, were the most abundant species. Moreover, most species could tolerate both forest and non-forest conditions. Age class forests provided different environmental niches for species. Initiation stands were optimal for terrestrial light-demanding species, and in terms of species composition, initiation stands were most specific. Young stands were most preferred by species on coarse woody debris, and at this stage of stand maturation epiphytic species re-appeared. The oldest stands were not rich in forest specialists, i.e. species of closed forest and ancient forest species. Cryptogams of closed forests inhabited different substrates, and they were not associated only with the oldest stands. The low number of forest specialists in the oldest stands may be a general feature of acidophilus pine forests. However, it may also be a result of the lack of species sources in the vicinity of maturing pine stands. In managed forests a frequent diversity pattern is an increase in a species pool and richness after clear-cut logging. In the present study we obtained higher species pools in initiation and young stands, but richness was similar in all tree stand age classes. This resulted from taking into account species of different substrates (terrestrial, epixylous and epiphytic species) which changed their participation in the vegetation of subsequent stages of tree stand development. Background: Many studies have analysed the effect of browsing by large herbivores on tree species but far fewer studies have studied their effect on understorey shrubs and herbs. Moreover, while many studies have shown that forest features and management intensity strongly influence understorey vegetation, the influence of such variation on the effect of large-herbivore exclusion is not known. This study: In this study, we analysed changes of species richness, Shannon diversity, evenness and cover of understorey herbs and shrubs after excluding large herbivores for seven years on 147 forest sites, differing in management intensity and forest features, in three regions of Germany (Schwäbische Alb, Hainich-Dün, Schorfheide-Chorin). Further, we studied how the effect of large-herbivore exclusion on understorey vegetation was influenced by forest management intensity and several forest features. Results: As expected, exclusion of large herbivores resulted in highly variable results. Nevertheless, we found that large-herbivore exclusion significantly increased cover and Shannon diversity of shrub communities, while it did not affect herb communities. Forest management intensity did not influence the effect of large-herbivore exclusion while some forest features, most often relative conifer cover, did. In forests with high relative conifer cover, large-herbivore exclusion decreased species richness and cover of herbs and increased Shannon diversity of herbs and shrubs, while in forests with low relative conifer cover large-herbivore exclusion increased species richness and cover of herbs, and decreased Shannon diversity of herbs and shrubs. Conclusion: We suggest that browsing by large herbivores should be included when studying understorey shrub communities, however when studying understorey herb communities the effects of browsing are less general and depend on forest features. Conflicts between biodiversity conservation and resource production can be mitigated by multi-objective management planning. Optimizing management for multiple objectives over larger land areas likely entails trading off the practicability of the process against the goodness of the solution. It is therefore worthwhile to resolve how large areas are required as management planning regions to reconcile conflicting objectives as effectively as possible. We aimed to reveal how the extent of forestry planning regions impacts the potential to mitigate a forestry-conservation conflict in Finland, represented as a trade-off between harvest income and deadwood availability. We used forecasted data from a forest simulator, a hierarchy of forestry planning regions, and an optimization model to explore the production possibility frontier between harvest income and deadwood. We compared the overall outcomes when management was optimized within the different-sized planning regions in terms of the two objectives, the spatial variation of deadwood, and the optimal combinations of management regimes. Increasing the size of the planning regions did produce higher simultaneous levels of the two objectives, but the differences were most often of the magnitude of only a few percentages. The differences among the scales were minor also in terms of the spatial variation in deadwood availability and in the optimal management combinations. The conflict between timber harvesting and deadwood availability is only marginally easier to mitigate at large spatial scales than at small forest ownership scales. However, regardless of the spatial scale of planning, the achievable solutions may not be good enough to safeguard deadwood-dependent biodiversity without active deadwood creation. Realistic and interactive visualization of individual trees is a desirable functionality in numerous applications for landscape planning, ecosystem simulations, and forest management. However, achieving a persuasive visualization of extensive forests while maintaining an interactive experience remains a challenge. This paper introduces a new framework for a convincing and interactive visualization of large-scale forests originating from forest growth simulation. First, the GPU-based self-organizing tree synthesis algorithm is adapted to produce detailed tree models on-the-fly with the desired level of detail and at interactive rates. Next, the algorithm is enhanced to generate tree models corresponding to the forest simulation results and local growth conditions. Finally, a forest succession model, based on single trees, is linked to the tree synthesis algorithm, to produce detailed tree models that concur with the results of forest simulation. The results demonstrate that the generated trees follow predicted height from forest simulation, are adapted to their neighbors properly, and retain the typical form of the corresponding species. A decimation technique, integrated directly into tree geometry construction, lowers memory requirements for interactive visualization of forests containing thousands of trees. Finally, a combination of the GPU-based tree synthesis and load balancing enables interactive tree synthesis in-between individual frames. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quercus wutaishansea populations on the Loess Plateau are currently becoming more dominant in natural secondary forests, whereas Pinus tabulaeformis is declining. In the present paper, the diameter class (instead of age) was used to classify the different growth stages as juvenile, subadult, or adult, and the univariate function g(r) was used to analyze the dynamic changes in spatial patterns and interspecific associations in three 1‐ha tree permanent plots on the Loess Plateau, NW China. Our results suggested that the niche breadth changed with the development stage. The diameter distribution curve was consistent with the inverted "J" type, indicating that natural regeneration was common in all three plots. There was a close relationship between the spatial pattern and scale, which showed significant aggregation at small distances, and became more random as distance increased, but in the Pinus + Quercus mixed forests, the whole species were aggregated at distances up to 50 m. The degree of spatial clumping decreased from juvenile to subadult and from subadult to adult. The spatial pattern also differed at different growth stages, likely due to strong intraspecific competition. Associations among different growth stages were positively correlated at small scales. Our study is important to the understanding of the development of the Q. wutaishansea forests; thus, the spatial dynamic change features should be received greater attention when planning forest management and developing restoration strategies on the Loess Plateau. The dry evergreen forest of Kondapalli (Andhra Pradesh state, India) is declared as a forest reserve, but, despite of this, it is subjected to degradation resulting in loss of biodiversity. Thus, the current study was carried out to investigate the tree diversity of Kondapalli forest. A total of 566 ±16 trees (=10 cm) representing 46±8 species from 40 genera and 21 families were recorded from the 0.36 ha area of Kondapalli forest. Mimosaceae was the most species rich family, while Rutaceae was the most abundant family. Atalantia monophylla was most frequent and abundant species and, with respect to basal area, Melia azedarach and Syzygium cumini were the dominant taxa. The recorded stem density was 1572 stems ha-1 and the mean forest basal area was 47.17 m2 ha-1. The results of cluster analysis revealed that Atalantia monophylla, characterised by a high ecological amplitude, had a wide distribution and was associated with species forming different communities. The study showed that Kondapalli forest is characterised by a fairly high species richness, which provides the baseline data on the floristic structure and diversity of this forest for better management and conservation. In eastern North American Quercus forests, the historic fire regime, characterized by periodic, low-intensity surface fire, facilitated the development and maintenance of mid-successional Quercus forests across multiple spatial and temporal scales. One physiological mechanism favoring Quercus over mesophytic and/or shade-tolerant deciduous broadleaved species is prolific and vigorous resprouting following topkill. Generalizations regarding interspecific differences in fire-induced resprouting are confounded by interactions between biotic and abiotic factors. The goal of this study was to quantify resprout dynamics by 2- and 3-year-old seedlings of four prominent deciduous broadleaved species (Acer rubrum, Liriodendron tulipifera, Quercus alba, and Q. rubra) following topkill via experimental burning, where seedling age, competition, fire intensity, and light were controlled. Resprouting was independent of fire intensity and seedling size. The resprout rate of Q. rubra (82%) was greater than that of A. rubrum (53%), L. tulipifera (56%), and Q. alba (52%). A second burn conducted a year later did little to inhibit resprouting by topkilled individuals. After both burns, L. tulipifera sprouts were significantly taller than the other species. Although absolute height of Q. rubra sprouts was greater than A. rubrum after the first burn, absolute height of Q. rubra sprouts was lower than A. rubrum following the second burn. Results suggest that broad, cross-genus generalizations may not accurately reflect interspecific differences in resprout potential, which may have implications related to the ability to regenerate and recruit Quercus under a re-introduced periodic fire regime.
