The article introduces a general-purpose citation-indexing system for finance journals, with the primary objective of illustrating the cross-disciplinary impact of journals of finance. A brief historical overview of the growth of professional literature is presented, and it is suggested that writers of financial literature often use only a few sources in their research. The citation-indexing system introduced by the authors can assist researchers in bibliographic searches, identification of widely used finance journals, and the selection of appropriate journals for their needs.

This study provides comprehensive publications performance data over a 25-year period for finance doctorates. These data indicate that publishing one article per year in any finance journal (or finance, accounting, economics, or business journal) over any prolonged period of time is a truly remarkable feat, met by only 5% of the graduates. Tenure screens combining various quantity and quality requirements are examined to assess their ability to predict future publication productivity. Faculty and administrators seeking defensible benchmarks for evaluating faculty research productivity in finance will find that these data and results are particularly useful. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This note summarizes recent trends in institutional affiliation of authors who publish in three leading general interest journals, American Economic Review (AER), Journal of Political Economy (JPE), and Quarterly Journal of Economics (QJE). The statistics show that well over 40% of the pages published in the QJE between 2000 and 2003 are by authors affiliated with one of four institutions. This represents a significant increase from analogous figures during the 1980s and earlier periods. The concentrations of affiliations are not as high at the AER or JPE, but they still show a reversal of the declining trend in concentration that occurred from 1950 to 1989. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There is a natural curiosity within the economic academic community regarding who are the most frequent contributors to the economic literature. This paper presents an analysis of the top publishers in the ‘Blue Ribbon Eight’ economics journals, over the past 50 years (1954-2003), plus two 25-year subperiods of 1954-1978 and 1979-2003. While it is tempting to use these results to rank economics departments, this paper is meant to be an historical appreciation of these authors and journals and not meant to imply any type of current ranking. Rewards for publications in good economics journals are very high, and submission fees and other monetary costs associated with submitting an existing manuscript are low. Consequently, the editorial delay (especially the first-response time—the time until the first editorial decision), by postponing monetary rewards to publication, constitutes the major submission cost (from the author's perspective). Reducing the delay will induce many additional submissions of low-quality papers to good journals, increasing significantly the workload of editors and referees. Moreover, the rejection rate will increase and cause papers to be rejected more times before publication, offsetting at least some of the shorter first-response times. As a result, the efforts of many editors to reduce the editorial delay, although attracting more submissions to their journals, may have adverse effects from a social perspective, and the optimal delay might be longer than the current average of four months. Comments on David Laband and Robert Tollison's (2003) analysis of the productivity of economic research. The sample consisted of 1,759 references found in 78 research articles from the 1999 volumes of the Journal of Economic Perspectives, the Journal of Political Economy, and The Quarterly Journal of Economics. The median article was written by two authors, was 27 pages long and contained 30 citations. Scholarly journals accounted for 58 percent (median) of the items used, with monographs (15 percent), and working papers (14 percent) being the other major formats. Periodical and book publishers accounted for about 76 percent of the citations with research institutes and organizations (12 percent) following in importance. Government documents and publications represented about 3 percent (median) of the citations. Nearly 60 percent (median) of the citations were published within the last ten years, but the range was 208 years from the publication date of the earliest cited item to the publication date of the latest cited item. Using data as reported in the JEL in 2000 and 1985, the authors examine the pricing and other characteristics of books. There has been a substantial rise in book prices, even in real terms, between the two years, which the smaller rise in average page length appears insufficient to justify. A major factor behind the rise would appear to be the increasing importance of foreign presses that not only sell at a higher average price than U.S. presses but are increasingly likely to do so. University presses and other not-for-profit publishers sell at substantially lower prices than commercial publishing houses and are more likely to publish in paperback than commercial publishing houses. This paper examines data on the institutional backgrounds of editors and authors of the top 30 economics journals, identified by their 1995 citation impact. It is revealed, for example, that 70.8% of the journal editors were located in the United States, and twelve U.S. universities accounted for the location of more than 38.9%. Concerning journal article authors, 65.7% were located in U.S. institutions and twelve U.S. universities accounted for 21.8%. The article presents the American Economic Review editor's report. The editor reported on the general nature and advantages of the editorial process of the Review which include the avoidance of conflict of interest that result when a paper is handled by a colleague. He presents a table of manuscripts that were submitted and published from 1979 to 1998, showing the ratio of published against submitted manuscripts. He also presents tables regarding the average publication lags, subject matter distribution of published manuscripts and cost of printing and mailing. He also presents the list of referees who have volunteered their services.

The article examines the academic publishing on economics. The returns on publishing are shown to range from psychic rewards such as increased reputation and status, to monetary and professional rewards such as salary increases, promotion and tenure, expanded career opportunities, and increased mobility. In measuring monetary and professional rewards, the cited authors have found evidence of diminishing marginal returns on academic publishing. Conversely, there are costs associated with academic writing. The monetary costs of academic publishing are to a large extent absorbed by the writer's university. The costs incurred by the writer are mainly personal. These costs can be measured in terms of the time and effort expended for researching and writing the article, lost professional opportunities such as lost outside consulting fees and foregone leisure time. The nature of these costs are such that they will not diminish rapidly after the writer's research skills mature. A rational academic writer is defined as one who seeks to maximize the differential between the expected returns and the expected costs of publishing.

This report covers operations of the editorial office of the journal "American Economic Review". A new system that significantly decentralizes the editorial decision-making process through the use of co-editors has been implemented. Experience with the new process is still limited, however, and a more complete report on the results of its implementation will have to await another occasion. Manuscripts submitted for publication in the Review since March 1, 1985 have been handled by a new procedure. Each paper was assigned to one of three co-editors, or retained by the managing editor, for supervision through the review process and for a final decision on the manuscript status. It is hopes that the new editorial procedure will allow due recognition in the editorial process for the wide variety in both the substantive and methodological character of manuscripts submitted to the Review. It should also be possible to obtain these benefits without a significant increase in the length of time required to review and process submitted manuscripts.

This article presents a report of the managing editor of the journal "The American Economic Review," regarding manuscripts as of May 1984. The author says that there were no changes in editorial policy to report for the year 1983 as compared with 1982. The journal been less than 100 percent successful in ensuring that authors have a final editorial decision within three months of the date that their manuscript is received at the editorial office, but the exceptional cases are mainly ones in which increased speed would be associated with less considered editorial assessments. The recent history of manuscript submissions and papers published is shown in tables 1 and 2 of the article. The author says that the journal "The American Economic Review," received 932 papers in 1983. This is a more than 10 percent increase over 1982, and indicates that the author's earlier expectation of a leveling off in submissions was nonrational. The generally quick turnaround time at the review seems to carry more weight with respective authors than does the manuscript submission fee. The disposition of manuscripts received during 1982 and 1983 is shown in table 3 of the article. The acceptance rate for 1983 is significantly lower than last year.

Abstract--This study finds that a strong bibliometric regularity exists in the publication pattern in the economics literature; the number of authors publishing n papers is approximately 1/n[sup c] of those publishing one paper. The economics literature conforms very well to the model with c = 1.84 if data are taken from a large collection of journals. When applied to individual journals, the result shows that values of c range from 2.04 to 3.11. This paper also reports the degree of author concentration among leading economics journals. Finally, this study finds that the graduates of three graduate programs account for more than half of the top 100 authors, indicating strong institutional dominance in the production of the most prolific authors. This study complements existing research on the contributions and rankings of female economists with a descriptive analysis of the prevalence of gender issues in U.S. economics journals. Assuming that labor economics and development economics are the fields most likely to examine gender issues, I compare the incidence of gender-related articles in the last decade in leading U.S. general economics journals with top journals in the labor and development fields. I also examine the gender composition of authors of gender-related articles in all journals. Results indicate that the highest ranked field-journals publish a higher percentage of articles on gender than do the leading general journals from among their labor and development papers. And unlike the common perception, a disproportionate number of the gender articles are written by men rather than women, particularly in the labor and general journals. The results suggest that departments that use publication in general journals as a proxy for overall research quality, and which do not consider alternative evaluations of research as potential full substitutes, may be using biased measures of the quality and importance of research on gender. The publication policies of general economics journals and the promotion policies of certain economics departments may have a direct effect in reducing both the number and perceived prestige of voices addressing issues of gender in economics. The article focuses on the publishing of economic papers and its impact on graduate faculty ratings. Some readers have asked about production schedules. Working backwards in time, it takes the printer about four months to produce an issue from the time copy originally arrives in his hands. Preparation of final copy in the editorial office can take anywhere from two to four months depending upon such priorities as proofreading and indexing of the issue already in the production line, and the like. Most manuscripts go through at least one revision. Thus, a lag of seven to twelve months between initial receipt of a submission and final appearance is normal, if there is no space problem. The turn-around time for a journal of this size, is from comments received, on the short side. At present, the volume for 1970 is in production. It will be followed by the volumes for 1971, 1969, and 1972. Each annual volume will not only include virtually all of the articles found in the quarterly issues of the Journal of Economic Literature.

This article presents information on various periodical articles on the English economic history that were published in 1968. The medieval English economy seems to have taken less space than usual in the journals in 1968. Two articles on the history of settlement, reportedly, appeared in the journal "Agricultural History Review." One of those is E.A. Pocock's "The First Fields in an Oxfordshire Parish," which investigates the fields of Clanfield with the keen eye of a practising farmer plus an enthusiastic use of archaeological and documentary evidence. This is an interesting attempt to put the settlement pattern of a single parish under the microscope to get a chronology of cultivation and use. The other article is B.K. Roberts's "Study of Medieval Colonization in the Forest of Arden, Warwickshire," which is a collection of deeds and related documents. Historical demographers and others in recent years have begun to dispel a little of the thick mist obscuring the demography of early modern England and the relationships between population and other economic variables. Of special interest is a report by economist E.A. Wrigley on Colyton, "Mortality in Pre-Industrial England: The Example of Colyton, Devon, Over Three Centuries," which presents the methods and results of a family reconstitution study of mortality, both infant and adult.

At the meeting of the executive committee of the "American Economic Association" in December, 1949, it was decided, upon the recommendation of the research committee, that the Association should sponsor a second volume of the "Survey of Contemporary Economics." This second volume should appear early in 1952, and will contain review articles on ten important fields not included, or touched upon incidentally, in the first volume. The purpose of this move was, firstly, to make it possible for economists generally to bring themselves up to date on recent progress in the field of economics other than those in which they are specialists; secondly, to appraise recent works in the fields covered; and thirdly to indicate directions which, in the opinion of the authors, future research in these fields might profitably take. To accomplish these tasks, two critics have been invited to review essays that are submitted by various researchers. The critics, in addition to making suggestions and criticism available to author and editors before submission of the essays in final form, will prepare for inclusion in the volume brief critical comments upon the essays as published. The volume has been edited by Bernard F. Haley, Stanford University, Palo Alto, California.

This article presents a list of several articles that are related to Danish economic history and were previously published in various periodicals and yearbooks since 1965. Important contributions have dealt with the rise of cities in the Viking and early medieval periods. Some of these were included in the book "Die Zeit der Stadtgründung im Ostseeraum," by Aksel E. Christensen and Herbert Jankuhn, which is a book containing the lectures delivered at the Visby seminar of 1963. Two studies by Aksel Lassen of Denmark's population in the period 1645-1769 have been summarized in English: "The Population of Denmark in 1660" and "The Population of Denmark, 1660-1960." Agrarian economy has of course been an important dieme. Some of the socio-economic foundations of the political changes of 1660 have been analysed by E. Ladewig Petersen in his article "Danskadelig økonomi, 1600-1660." An annotated bibliography of literature on industrial and commercial history published since 1952-55 has been compiled by V. Dybdahl, "Nyere handels- og industri-historisk litteratur."

The article presents the 2005 report of the Editor of the "Journal of Economic Perspectives" to the American Economic Association. The article analyzes the significant relationship between a university's economics-oriented publication record and faculty compensation at that university. The purpose of this study was to explore that relationship without attempting to probe at any deficiencies that might be present in relating publication records to departmental quality. The author measures publication output by stated school affiliations of the various authors but did not indicate whether or not those authors were in the economics departments of their schools. A regression analysis was employed to test for statistical significance between measures of faculty output and compensation.
