In 1903, Epstein published his proof of meromorphic continuation and a functional equation for Dirichlet series associated with quadratic forms, now called Epstein zeta-functions. However, already in 1889 (or even earlier) Hurwitz was aware of these results as his mathematical diaries and some unpublished notes (in an almost final form) found in his estate at the ETH Zurich show. In this article we present and analyze Hurwitz's notes and compare his reasoning with Epstein's paper in detail.

In a recent paper, (Math Notes 91(3–4): 508–516, 2012) Zarhin proved that each member of a naturally defined family of linear maps \({\mathbb {C}}^n \rightarrow {\mathbb {C}}^n\) has co-rank one. We present a direct proof of Zarhin’s result about complex polynomials with distinct roots; it is rather similar to that of Appendix by Vik.S. Kulikov to Zarhin’s paper but we give explicit constants. We also discuss the case of a polynomial with multiple roots.

We complete a gap in the proof that exceptional polynomials are complete orthogonal systems in the associated Hilbert spaces.

In this note we re-examine the analysis of the paper "On the martingale property of stochastic exponentials" by B. Wong and C.C. Heyde, Journal of Applied Probability, 41(3):654-664, 2004. An error has been detected (and also corrected) in Theorem 2.8 of the paper entitled “Adjoining an Order Unit to a Matrix Ordered Space” (Positivity, (2005)9: 207–223; DOI 10.1007/s11117-003-2778-5). Accordingly, some of the results of the paper have been modified. Also, a notion of C*-matricially, Riesz normed spaces has been introduced.

Complementing the work of T.-S. Liu and A.C.M. van Rooij we show that the existence of non-zero translation invariant operators between certain function spaces on a locally compact group implies its amenability.

We give an example of an affinoid curve without analytic continuation. We use this to produce an example of an affinoid morphism that cannot be flattened by a finite sequence of local blow-ups. Thus the global rigid analogue of Hironaka's complex analytic flattening theorem given by T. Gardener and H. Schoutens, in Theorem 2.3 of ?Flattening and subanalytic sets in rigid analytic geometry?, Proc. London Math. Soc (3) 83 (2001) 681?707, is not true. Since this is a key step in the proof of the affinoid elimination theorem (loc. cit. Theorem 3.12), that proof contains a serious gap. We also give an example of an affinoid subset of the plane that is not the image under a proper rigid analytic map of a set that is globally semianalytic in the domain of that map. This clarifies the relationship among several natural categories of rigid subanalytic sets.

In this note, we give a counterexample for Theorem 2.3 of the above mentioned paper that is a generalization of the Grothendieck non-vanishing theorem to a class of modules larger than finitely generated modules.

It was proved by Ibukiyama and Skoruppa that the spaces J1,m(l) of Jacobi forms of weight 1, index m and level l vanish if gcd (l,m)=1. We will show that the result holds without the gcd hypothesis.

We consider the matrix for the Satake isomorphism with respect to natural bases. We give a simple proof in the case of Chevalley groups that the matrix coefficients which are not obviously zero are in fact positive numbers. We also relate the matrix coefficients to Kazhdan–Lusztig polynomials and to Bernstein functions.

In a preceding paper of Jin and Wang the authors describe computations concerning differential systems of the form x=y, y=-x+a 1 x 2 +a 2 xy+a 3 y 2 +a 4 x x3 +a 5 x 2 y+a 6 xy 2 +a 7 y 3 . We give proofs of the results suggested by these computations and provide a full description of the bifurcation of small-amplitude limit cycles in a subclass of these systemes

Here we give a result on the postulation (i.e. the 2-normality) of nonlinearly normal embeddings of Abelian varieties. This result improves some of the results proved in a recent paper by Ch. Birkenhake.

Recently, Saleh claimed to have solved `a long standing open question' in Topology; namely, he proved that every almost continuous function is closure continuous (= $\theta$-continuous). Unfortunately, this problem was settled long time ago and even a better result is known., Comment: 2 pages, to appear in "Glasgow Math. J."

This paper deals with Schrodinger operators as they were treated by Kato - Ikebe [3]. It is shown that every element of the domain of definition of the adjoint of such an operator has locally square integrable distributional derivatives up to the order 2. For this the potential of the Schrodinger operator must fulfil a local Stummel condition; if the potential is only locally square integrable a somewhat weaker statement is possible for three dimensions (see remark 2 at the end of this paper).

Why do I think that Z.v.G.II was an epoch-making paper? (1) It was the paradigm for subsequent efforts to classify the possible structures for any mathematical object. Hawkins [15] documents the fact that Killing’s paper was the immediate inspiration for the work of Cartan, Molien, and Maschke on the structure of linearassociative algebras which culminated in Wedderburn’s theorems. Killing’s success was certainly an example which gave Richard Brauer the will to persist in the attempt to classify simple groups. (2) Weyl’s theory of the representation of semi-simple Lie groups would have been impossible without ideas, results, and methods originated by Killing in Z.v.G.II. Weyl’s fusion of global and local analysis laid the basis for the work of Harish-Chandra and the flowering of abstract harmonic analysis. (3) The whole industry of root systems evinced in the writings of I. Macdonald, V. Kac, R. Moody, and others started with Killing. For the latest see [21]. (4) The Weyl group and the Coxeter transformation are in Z.v.G.II. There they are realized not as orthogonal motions of Euclidean space but as permutations of the roots. In my view, this is the proper way to think of them for general Kac-Moody algebras. Further, the conditions for symmetrisability which play a key role in Kac’s book [17] are given on p. 21 of Z.v.G.II. (5) It was Killing who discovered the exceptional Lie algebra E8, which apparently is the main hope for saving Super-String Theory—not that I expect it to be saved! (6) Roughly one third of the extraordinary work of Elie Cartan was based more or less directly on Z.v.G.II.

In a paper which appeared a few years ago the authors investigated the exponential representation of functions analytic in the upper half-plane with positive imaginary part there [1]. We refer to that paper in the sequel as A-D. One of the principal results of A-D, there called Theorem A, can be extended to a considerably more general result, the proof of which is perhaps simpler than that given in A-D. We give the extended version of Theorem A here. We will use the notations and results of A-D without further explanations. Before we present the extension and its proof we would like to add some information that by oversight was omitted from the list of fundamental properties of the functions in the class P given in Section 1 of A-D. In such a comprehensive review one should mention that the classical theorem on representation of a positive harmonic function in a circle by a Poisson-Stieltjes integral is due to G. Herglotz [2]. The following results of L. H. Loomis [3] were not given: XVII. Introduction. In a recent paper [2] R. H. Bruck has introduced the concept of right neoring and discussed some properties of these systems. In particular, he has considered analogues of certain properties of the ring of integers. This paper is essentially a commentary on Bruck's paper and we generalize some of his results as follows. The construction of the universal right neoring in [2] is applied to the free monogenic $3-loop in any subvariety $3 of the variety of loops and a complete analogue of Theorem 4.1 of [2] is obtained for any one of these subvarieties. Then, using a result similar to those obtained in [5], it is shown that this construction yields uncountably many right neorings with an identity which generates the additive loop of the right neoring. Conversely, every right neoring with an identity which generates its additive loop can be obtained from a free monogenic $3-loop by the above construction. Each of these right neorings has some properties resembling those of the ring of integers. One possible answer is given to the question raised by Bruck concerning the existence of universal right neorings with free additive loop of arbitrary rank. A brief proof is given, using the results of [4; 5], of the cancellation properties of the monogenic universal right neoring. Finally, we discuss briefly the relationship between right neorings and the logarithmetics of Etherington.

In two recent papers of Conner and Floyd ((2)) and ((3)), the additive structure of the SU-cobordism (or bordism) ring was completely determined. The object of this note is to point out that their results can also be used to determine the somewhat complicated multiplicative structure.

The main goal of this short paper is to prove the existence of rank 2 simple and special Ulrich bundles on a wide class of elliptic surfaces: namely, on regular Weierstrass fibrations \(\pi : S\rightarrow \mathbb {P}^1\). Alongside we also show the existence of rank 2 weakly Ulrich sheaves on arbitrary Weierstrass fibrations \(S\rightarrow C_0\) and we deal with the (non-)existence of rank one Ulrich bundles on them.

In this short paper we prove a parametric version of the Harnack inequality for \(\phi\)-Laplacian equations. In this sense, the estimates are optimal and represent an improvement of previous bounds for this kind of operators.

The objective of the paper Aczél and Ostrowski (1973) is to show in an elementary way that any real-valued function f, defined on (0,1) and satisfying he inquality , where n ≧ 3 is fixed, is necessary of the form .

The aim of this short note is to discuss Szisz's paper [1] on rings with almost nil adjoint semigroups and to make some remarks about it. His results should be read as a characterization of rings with almost nit, rather than almost nil adjoint semigroups as stated. All his propositions could be simplified considerably once the word adjoint is dropped. Towards this we state the following result appearing in JACOBSO~ [2].

In a recent paper on subreflexive normed linear spaces (see Arch. Math. 8, 444--450 (1957)) and its correction (see Arch. Math. 9,439--440, (1958)) R. R. PHELPS proved the following theorem.

Some time ago, Dr I. B. S. Passi pointed out to me the connexion between the structure of the terms of the α-central series of a wreath product and that of polynomial groups which he had defined and studied. In discussing this problem with him, we looked closely at a paper (1) which I had written on nilpotent wreath products. In the process of this, I found a mistake in Theorem 3·7, the main result of (1). The results in (2) depend onthis theorem. Fortunately, it is possible to obtain a correct version of Theorem 3·7 and to modify the proof in (2) which depends on this theorem in such a way that all the results of (2) remain valid.
