This article describes a new method for evaluation of radial crush strength of paper cores. Based on the theory of multilayered composites, a mathematical model has been developed to calculate the value of destructive force during radial crushing of spirally shaped paper cores whose layers are made of different materials. Ant-inspired metaheuristic algorithms known as ant colony optimization (ACO) offer an approach that has the ability to solve complex problems in both discrete and continuous domains. ACOs have gained significant attention in the field of water resources management, since many problems in this domain are non-linear, complex, challenging and also demand reliable solutions. The aim of this study is to critically review the applications of ACO algorithms specifically in the field of hydrology and hydrogeology, which include areas such as reservoir operations, water distribution systems, coastal aquifer management, long-term groundwater monitoring, hydraulic parameter estimation, and urban drainage and storm network design. Research articles, peer-reviewed journal papers and conference papers on ACO were critically analyzed to identify the arguments and research findings to delineate the scope for future research and to identify the drawbacks of ACO. Implementation of ACO variants is also discussed, as hybrid and modified ACO techniques prove to be more efficient over traditional ACO algorithms. These algorithms facilitate formulation of near-optimal solutions, and they also help improve cost efficiency. Although many studies are attempting to overcome the difficulties faced in the application of ACO, some parts of the mathematical analysis remain unsolved. It is also observed that despite its popularity, studies have not been successful in incorporating the uncertainty in ACOs and the problems of dimensionality, convergence and stability are yet to be resolved. This article introduces a team-based model of researchers in a specialty and investigates the manifestation of such teams in a specialty's literature. The proposed qualitative behavioral model, with its mathematical expression as a growth model, is significant because it simultaneously describes the two phenomena of collaboration and author productivity (Lotka's law) in a specialty. The model is nested: A team process models the creation of research teams and the success-breeds-success process of their production of articles, while at a lower level the productivity of authors within teams is also modeled as a success-breeds-success process. Interteam collaboration (weak ties) is modeled as random events. This simple growth model is shown to faithfully mimic six network metrics of bipartite article-author networks. The model is demonstrated on three example article collections from specialties that have a wide range of degree of collaboration: (a) a distance education collection with low collaboration degree, (b) a complex networks collection with typical collaboration degree, and (c) an atrial ablation collection with heavy collaboration degree. Problems that offer multiple revelations during its investigations and that can be approached mathematically in more than one way often involve paper folding and conic sections. These problems can be easily demonstrated with a sheet of wax paper or emulated by the geometer's sketchpad.

The purpose of this article is to analyse how students use inscriptions as tools for thinking and learning in mathematical problem-solving activities. The empirical context is that of learning about geometric series in a small group setting. What has been analysed is how students made use of inscriptions, self-made as well as those provided by text books and teachers, and the role these inscriptions played in the coordination of students' learning/communication. Through the use of inscriptions (made on the chalkboard and with paper and pencil), the students extemalised their thinking while engaging in mathematical reasoning on the topic of geometric series. The inscriptions were significant as anchor points for arguments in the ongoing discussions. Three main issues are highlighted: (a) how the inscriptions used contribute to the process of appropriation, (b) how the students use inscriptions to externalise and clarify their ideas and attempts at meaning-making, and (c) how the inscriptions are conducive to closing the gap between the original problem as given in the text book and the mathematisation necessary. Abstract: A left canonical factorization theorem for rational matrix functions relative to the unit circle is presented. The result is a time invariant version of a recent strict LU factorization theorem for certain semi-separable operators, due to Dewilde (2012) [6]. Explicit formulas for the factors are also given. The theorem is proved, first by using the state space method of Dewilde (2012) [6], and next by using an operator theory approach. In both cases the main part of the proof concerns rational matrix functions that are unitary on the unit circle. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

For decades, historians have debated the origins of Einstein's special theory of relativity. The derivation of the Lorentz Transformations given by Einstein in 1905 is studied in detail; and it is found to be mathematically inconsistent, and thus in error. Therefore, he must have been aware of the transformations at the time of writing the paper, which is an extremely minority opinion in the general literature. His attempt to rederive them starting from the synchronization condition is incorrect. Though the derivation is flawed, it does not affect many of the concepts he put forth that flow from the Lorentz Transformations. The observations given here will help resolve a long-standing dispute over the priority of the discovery of various parts of the theory. The present comment concerns the correct presentation of an algorithm proposed in the above paper for the glow-curve deconvolution in the case of continuous distribution of trapping states. In this short paper, we look into a conclusion drawn by Alzalg (J Optim Theory Appl 169:32-49, 2016). We think the conclusion drawn in the paper is incorrect by pointing out three things. First, we provide a counterexample that the proposed inner product does not satisfy bilinearity. Secondly, we offer an argument why a pth-order cone cannot be self-dual under any reasonable inner product structure on $$\mathbb {R}^n$$ . Thirdly, even under the assumption that all elements operator commute, the inner product becomes an official inner product and the arbitrary-order cone can be shown as a symmetric cone, we think this condition is still unreasonable and very stringent so that the result can only be applied to very few cases. A generalization of the problem of writing on dirty paper is considered in which one transmitter sends a common message to multiple receivers. Each receiver experiences on its link an additive interference (in addition to the additive noise), which is known noncausally to the transmitter but not to any of the receivers. Applications range from wireless multiple-antenna multicasting to robust dirty paper coding. We develop results for memoryless channels in Gaussian and binary special cases. In most cases, we observe that the availability of side information at the transmitter increases capacity relative to systems without such side information, and that the lack of side information at the receivers decreases capacity relative to systems with such side information. For the noiseless binary case, we establish the capacity when there are two receivers. When there are many receivers, we show that the transmitter side information provides a vanishingly small benefit. When the interference is large and independent across the users, we show that time sharing is optimal. For the Gaussian case, we present a coding scheme and establish its optimality in the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise limit when there are two receivers. When the interference power is large and independent across all the receivers, we show that time-sharing is again optimal. Connections to the problem of robust dirty paper coding are also discussed. Abstract: The study used the simulated e-paper to investigate how the bending radius of curvature (−10cm, plane, and 10cm) and 12 text/background color-combinations of e-paper affect subjects’ visual performance and subjective preference under various ambient illuminance conditions (200 and 500lx). Analysis results indicated that the bending curvature and ambient illuminance did not significantly affect subjects’ visual performance. However, subjects visual performance differed significantly for different text/background color combinations of the simulated e-paper. When the background color of the simulated e-paper was set to yellow-like condition and the luminance of the text was low (2.2 and 4.6cd/m2), subjects’ visual performance was best. Regarding the subjective preferences of subjects, the results of this research also demonstrated that the bending curvature, text/background color combinations and ambient illuminance all significantly affected the subjective preferences of subjects. Subjects exhibited the best preference under the following settings: bending curvature of the simulated e-paper set to plane; background color of the simulated e-paper set to yellow-like condition and low text luminance (2.2 or 4.6cd/m2); high ambient illuminance (500lx). The use of the efficient score statistic in sequential monitoring procedures is reviewed and analysed. Various models that arise in applications are considered. The efficient score vector has the same optimality property as the generalized likelihood ratio, but it has a simple-structure requiring fewer estimations, and this is especially important when the data have a complicated structure. Furthermore, with the efficient score vector it is possible to detect which component of the parameter vector is different from the hypothetical or the historical value. The article describes a study of the foodborne transmission mechanisms for norovirus. It was undertaken for the U.K. Food Standards Agency and received the System Dynamics Society's 2020 "System Dynamics Applications Award". The article opens with descriptions of norovirus, the organisational context and the aims of the study. The first phase involved the construction of a large, fully formulated SD simulation model which included person‐to‐person mechanisms and, newly built, food‐related mechanisms for norovirus transmission. The group modelling process and the model structure are described. The model's existence demonstrated that enough was known about foodborne mechanisms to create an explicit and carefully documented representation that specialists recognised, understood, and accepted. Additionally, a framework for analysing the model's parameters—some currently unknown—helped organise FSA thinking on future research and potential policy levers. A second phase used mathematical analysis of a simplified SD model to assess the relative scale of the foodborne effects. In terms of contributions, this generated insights into possible sources of seasonality and insights into whether the most effective leverage points in the system lay solely within the remit of the FSA or were also within the remits of other government departments. The article closes by summarising the findings and then exploring their policy implications and recording the client's reactions to them. © 2022 The Authors. A non-smooth biobjective optimization problem for designing the shape of a slice channel in a paper machine headbox is described. The conflicting goals defining the optimization problem are the ones determining important quality properties of produced paper: 1) basis weight should be even and 2) the wood fibers of paper should mainly be oriented to the machine direction across the width of the whole paper machine. The novelty of the considered approach is that maximum deviations are used instead of least squares when objective functions are formed. For the solution of this problem, a multiobjective genetic algorithm based on nondominated sorting is considered. Abstract: In the present paper we studied the Voronovskaya type theorem for modified Gamma operators presented by A. İzgi in the paper “Voronovskaya type asymptotic approximation by modified Gamma operators” [Applied Mathematics and Computation 217 (2011) 8061–8067]. We show that this theorem is not true. Abstract: In (2012), Leonetti and Siepe [10] considered solutions to boundary value problems of some anisotropic elliptic equations of the type Under some suitable conditions, they obtained an integrability result, which shows that higher integrability of the boundary datum forces solutions to have higher integrability as well. In the present paper, we consider -obstacle problems of the nonhomogeneous anisotropic elliptic equations under some controllable growth and monotonicity conditions. This note concerns the paper "On the controllability of a coupled system of two Korteweg-de Vries equations" by Micu et al. [2]. They study a nonlinear coupled system of two Korteweg-de Vries equations and prove that the system is controllable by using four boundary controls. Here, we prove that in some cases it is possible to get the controllablity of the system by using only two controls. This can be done depending on both the spatial domain and the control time. The article focuses on a mathematical exercise related to the total solar eclipse. Total solar eclipses are impressive events. In times past, when the darkening of the sky and appearance of stars in midday occurred unexpectedly, people were reported to have actually died of fright. It is possible to create a mathematical model for the rate of darkening during an eclipse using only high school geometry and algebra. The equation that models the moon obscuring the sun can be displayed using graphing calculators or computers. The materials that were used included light meters compatible with the accompanying data collection devices for many brands of graphing calculators, an overhead projector, circular cutouts taken from construction paper, and a darkened room. In order to place the data on the same scale as the mathematical model, the data were normalized. A final simplifying assumption is that the area of the sun remaining exposed during an eclipse is directly proportional to light level. The angle changes throughout the duration of the eclipse. The discrepancies between the mathematical model, the lab simulation, and the actual field data were caused by limitations of the measuring tools, physical factors, and our simplifying assumptions. In reality, neither the light source used in the simulation nor the sun is a uniformly illuminated disk. To improve the geometric model, students could add a term to the function to indicate the time the eclipse lasted.

In this note we want to show that the PCR6 fusion rule works and redistributes the conflicting mass properly, contrarily to the authors' assertion that "he focal element {v3} absorbs almost all of the conflicting mass (the majority)."We also question the validity of the new CREC rule of combination presented by the authors. We have studied initial value problems for Caputo fractional differential equations with singular nonlinearities involving the p-Laplacian operator. We have given a precise mathematical analysis of the equivalence of the fractional differential equations and Volterra integral equations studied in this paper. A theorem for the global existence of the solution was proven. In addition, an example was given at the end of the article as an application of the results found in this paper. In this paper, we state that generalized convexity, invex sets, and the Fr'echet differentiability assumption associated with curvilinear integral type functionals represent some necessary and sufficient mathematical tools for establishing various connections between the solutions of some robust (weak) vector commanded variational inequalities and (weak, proper) robust efficient solutions of the corresponding multi-objective variational control problem. Agriculture was and remains the support of human existence, representing the backbone of the Romanian rural economy. The gross domestic product represents a macroeconomic indicator of results, being the consequence of the efficient use of resources. In this context, the authors analyze the place that agriculture holds in achieving the gross domestic product in Romania compared to the European Union, as well as its dynamics. In this sense, the share of resources in the formation of the gross domestic product in the period 2000-2022 is presented. The main research methods used for this work are: analysis, synthesis, comparison and mathematical analysis. From the analysis carried out, conclusive ideas emerge, and the article becomes even more suggestive, in that it is accompanied by tables synthesized by the authors and relevant graphics that highlight and support the assessments that the authors make in the content of this article. At the end of the paper, the authors emphasize the fact that the GDP is the most complex indicator that reflects the transformations that the Romanian economy has gone through in recent years. From the point of view of the use of resources, it can be seen that the share of the agricultural sector has registered a downward evolution, which can be largely explained by the increase in the importance of industry and the service sector in the overall national economy. In this paper, the Cauchy problem for the nonlinear Schrodinger system {idtu1(x,t)== ∆u1(x, t)− |u1(x, t)| p−1u1(x, t)− |u2(x, t)| p−1u1(x, t), idtu2(x, t) = ∆u2(x, t) − |u2(x, t)| p−1u2(x, t) − |u1(x, t)| p−1u2(x, t), was investigated in d space dimensions. For 1 < p ≤ 1 + 2/d, the nonexistence of asymptotically free solutions for the nonlinear Schrödinger system was proved based on mathematical analysis and scattering theory methods. The novelty of this paper was to give the proof of pseudo-conformal identity on the nonlinear Schrödinger system. The present results improved and complemented these of Bisognin, Sepúlveda, and Vera(Appl. Numer. The Internet of Things (IoT) is the underlying technology that has enabled connecting daily apparatus to the Internet and enjoying the facilities of smart services. IoT marketing is experiencing an impressive 16.7% growth rate and is a nearly USD 300.3 billion market. These eye-catching figures have made it an attractive playground for cybercriminals. IoT devices are built using resource-constrained architecture to offer compact sizes and competitive prices. As a result, integrating sophisticated cybersecurity features is beyond the scope of the computational capabilities of IoT. All of these have contributed to a surge in IoT intrusion. This paper presents an LSTM-based Intrusion Detection System (IDS) with a Dynamic Access Control (DAC) algorithm that not only detects but also defends against intrusion. This novel approach has achieved an impressive 97.16% validation accuracy. Unlike most of the IDSs, the model of the proposed IDS has been selected and optimized through mathematical analysis. Additionally, it boasts the ability to identify a wider range of threats (14 to be exact) compared to other IDS solutions, translating to enhanced security. Furthermore, it has been fine-tuned to strike a balance between accurately flagging threats and minimizing false alarms. Its impressive performance metrics (precision, recall, and F1 score all hovering around 97%) showcase the potential of this innovative IDS to elevate IoT security. The proposed IDS boasts an impressive detection rate, exceeding 98%. This high accuracy instills confidence in its reliability. The aim of this paper is to discuss the folding of Cayley graphs of finite group. We prove that, for any finite group G, |G| = n and H is a subgroup of G. Then Cayley graph r = Cay(G,S) of G with respect to S = H\{1G} can be folded into a complete graph Kr where r = |H|. Hence every Cayley graph Τ = Cay(G, S) of valency n -- 1 can not be folded. Also every Cayley graph r = Cay(G, S) of valency one can be folded and r = Cay(G, S), where S is generating set, every elements in it is self inverse and |S| = ½|G|, can be folded to an edge.
