This paper presents the results of ceramic synthesis in the field of a powerful flux of high-energy electrons on powder mixtures. The synthesis is carried out via the direct exposure of the radiation flux to a mixture with high speed (up to 10 g/s) and efficiency without the use of any methods or means for stimulation. These synthesis qualities provide the opportunity to optimize compositions and conditions in a short time while maintaining the purity of the ceramics. The possibility of synthesizing ceramics from powders of metal oxides and fluorides (MgF2, BaF2, WO3, Ga2O3, Al2O3, Y2O3, ZrO2, MgO) and complex compounds from their stoichiometric mixtures (Y3Al3O12, Y3AlxGa(5−x) O12, MgAl2O4, ZnAl2O4, MgWO4, ZnWO4, BaxMg(2−x) F4), including activators, is demonstrated. The ceramics synthesized in the field of high-energy electron flux have a structure and luminescence properties similar to those obtained by other methods, such as thermal methods. The results of studying the processes of energy transfer of the electron beam mixture, quantitative assessments of the distribution of absorbed energy, and the dissipation of this energy are presented. The optimal conditions for beam treatment of the mixture during synthesis are determined. It is shown that the efficiency of radiation synthesis of ceramics depends on the particle dispersion of the initial powders. Powders with particle sizes of 1–10 µm, uniform for the synthesis of ceramics of complex compositions, are optimal. A hypothesis is put forward that ionization processes, resulting in the radiolysis of particles and the exchange of elements in the ion–electron plasma, dominate in the formation of new structural phases during radiation synthesis. In general, glasses have a random structure, but they can take on unique structures due to bond selectivity. In this paper, we introduce the bond selectivity of oxygen- and fluorine-containing glasses and the formation of glass structures derived from the bond selectivity of each anion. We present the relationship between BaMgBO3F crystals and BaF2-MgO-B2O3 glasses. The crystal is composed of oxide and fluoride layers. The corresponding glass is suggested to have a bicontinuous structure from structural analysis and simulation. The glass has a favorable structure for luminescence and shows higher luminescence efficiency than the corresponding crystal. Such a structure is also favorable for nucleation; the BaF2-ZnO-B2O3 glass precipitated fluoride crystals with a very small particle size distribution at 5 nm upon heat treatment. Various structural analyses suggest that the fluoride sites in the fluoride-rich domain of this glass structure are similar to the crystals. Er3+/Yb3+ codoped glass ceramics containing BaF2 crystals were obtained through a melt quenching process; the precipitation of BaF2 nanocrystals was confirmed by structural characterization. The effects of crystal quantity and size on the transmittance and upconversion fluorescence of the samples were analyzed. The precipitation of nanocrystals leads to a significant increase in upconversion luminescence intensity. The fluorescence spectra at different pump powers were measured. Er3+ and Yb3+ energy level diagrams and possible energy transfer routes during upconversion luminescence were explored. Furthermore, the functional relationship between temperature and the upconversion fluorescence intensity ratio of the samples was analyzed. Phase pure BaF2 doped with Ce3+ (0.1%) nanocrystals are synthesized using an ionic liquid (IL) ([C4mim][BF4]) assisted solvothermal method where the IL is not only used as a reaction medium and a capping agent, but also as a reaction partner. Subsequently, upon calcining the as-prepared nanocrystals at various temperatures (200, 400, 600 and 800 °C), athough the crystal phase remains the same, however, a significant change in the lattice strain and morphology is observed. Tensile strain appears in the nanocrystals calcined at temperatures up to 400 °C, but a reversal of the strain, i.e. compressive strain, takes place when calcination is performed at 600 °C and onwards. Nanoflakes are obtained until calcination at 400 °C. However on calcination at 600 °C and beyond, a drastic modification in the morphology is observed. Layer or step-like structures appear due to secondary nucleation of nanoparticles. Meanwhile, the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of Ce3+ ions gradually decreases with the calcination temperature and finally vanishes at 600 °C/800 °C. To investigate the reasons for the quenching of the PL intensity, thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) and thermally stimulated exoelectron emission (TSEE) measurements are performed. The TSL and TSEE results indicate that in addition to the domination of deeper electron traps that appear as a high-temperature shift of TSEE glow peaks for both 600 °C and 800 °C, some new types of defects like F vacancies (F-centers) can be present, especially in the 800 °C calcined sample. TeO2-BaF2-Er2O3-Dy2O3 laser glasses were prepared using the melt-quenching method. The bound water that can capture the excited state energy was reduced by physical and chemical methods. We did not observe a significant Er3+ emission peak at 2.7 μm in fluorescence spectra, which may be due to the efficient energy transfer process (ET2). Meanwhile, we found a broadband gain span of approximately 400 nm in fluorescence spectra at the 2.85 μm band, attributed to the 'vector summation' of the energy level radiation transition and the change of the glass network. Subsequently, we explored the structural properties of the glass. The results indicated that the Gaussian peak located at 250 cm−1 drifts toward 370 cm−1, which may be caused by the fracture or recombination of Te-O-Te and a decrease in the bridge oxygen content with the increasing concentration of Er2O3. The topology cage structure around the luminescence center of rare earth ions is changed and the stability of the optically active center is enhanced, finally contributing to the enhancement of luminescence. Meanwhile, the maximum σemi and gain coefficient of Dy3+ reach up to 7.22 × 10−21 cm2 and 7.37 cm−1, respectively. The comprehensive results show that the fluorotellurite glass designed in this study is expected to be a gain medium for mid-infrared lasers in remote sensing monitoring, military, and other fields. Abstract In this paper, BaAl 11 O 16 N (BAON) based oxynitride phosphors have been synthesized via the employment of the flux method and Eu2+/Mn2+ co-doped technique. The effects of different fluxes on phase formation of the phosphor have been investigated. It has been found that BaF 2 is the best flux to prepare BAON as it can decrease the pure phase-forming temperature (∼1550 °C) than the normal solid state synthesis (∼1700 °C). It also gives the best luminescence quantum efficiency. The crystallinity, morphology and grain size of the phosphor can be improved when more BaF 2 flux has been added. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra and decay curves for Eu2+/Mn2+co-doped BAON phosphors reveal that an efficient energy transfer (ET) from Eu2+ to Mn2+ takes place in the BAON host. The corresponding ET efficiencies and mechanisms are evaluated and the critical distance (R c) is calculated in terms of the experimental data and analysis. The emission colors of the co-doped phosphors can be tuned from blue to green by simply varying the doping concentrations of Mn2+. White light-emitting diodes (WLEDs) are fabricated by coating the as-prepared samples on a near ultraviolet (n- UV) LED chip to explore the real application potentials. The excellent performance of this WLEDs verifies that the co-doped phosphor can be used as an efficient green component. The short-wavelength sub-nanosecond luminescence in BaF 2 material, discovered in the early 80s, gave a new direction to research into fast scintillators and phosphors. In contrast to 'typical' luminescence occurring within the forbidden band gap, the new type of emission was due to transitions between the upper core and valence bands. Thus it was named core-valence luminescence (CVL); the terms cross-luminescence and Auger-free luminescence have also been used. Given its unusual nature, this new luminescence process has attracted considerable interest in the field of condensed matter physics. During the sequent decades (till the end of the previous century) CVL has been experimentally observed in several dozen compounds and the conditions for detecting CVL have been established. Interest in this kind of luminescence increased in recent years due to the emergence of new methods of crystal synthesis, the development of high-speed solid-state photodetectors, and the construction of unique modern set-ups using synchrotron radiation. This paper analyzes the numerous studies of CVL, obtained mainly over the past decade. Experimental and theoretical data on this topic are considered in detail. Special attention is given to new results on scintillation characteristics of BaF 2 in the form of single crystals, ceramics, nanoparticles, and composites. The features of CVL in binary and ternary compounds are discussed. Some Cs- and Ba-based ternary halides show relatively high light yields and represent promising fast scintillators. We have prepared ErF3-doped glasses in the ZrF4–BaF2–LaF3–AlF3–NaF system containing chlorine ions substituted for fluorine ions. The crystallization behavior of the chlorine-substituted glasses has been studied at various BaCl2 and ErF3 concentrations. We have identified phases precipitating during heat treatment of the glasses and assessed the effect of chlorine substitution for fluoride on the optical absorption and IR luminescence in the glasses. The results demonstrate that chlorine substitution for fluorine causes the UV absorption edge of the glass to shift to longer wavelengths and produces an additional absorption in the visible spectral region. The formation of crystalline phases during heat treatment of the glasses leads to significant changes in the shape of the Er3+ luminescence bands at 0.98 and 1.55 μm. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Our recent study was focused on the emission from Laser Induced Plasma (LIP) at the delay times of tenths of microseconds after the laser pulse. At these long delays, the spectrum is dominated by the broadband molecular emission and plasma induced luminescence (PIL) produced by a luminescent matrix; only solitary atomic emission lines can be seen. Barium fluoride BaF 2 activated by thulium (Tm) is a famous scintillator that presents the promising object for LIP in terms of both the potential for BaF molecular emission and Tm3+ PIL. The detection of molecular and PIL bands presents a new opportunity for analysis of halogens and rare-earth elements, which are the difficult objects for LIBS. In this paper, we show that the UV, Green, Extreme Red, and Infrared molecular bands from BaF and blue luminescence from Tm3+ are present in the LIP emission spectra while the detection of atomic emission from F I and Tm I was impossible with the same experimental setup. Thus, the detection of molecular emission and PIL can be more sensitive than the traditional detection of emission from atoms and ions. We have studied luminescence and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of manganese- and europium-activated fluorozirconate glasses in the ZrF4–BaF2–LaF3–AlF3–NaF (ZBLAN) system and fluorohafnate glasses in the HfF4–BaF2–LaF3–AlF3–NaF (HBLAN) system in order to assess the oxidation state and spatial distribution of the activator ions. The manganese luminescence band has been shown to shift from the green (545 nm) to the red (610 nm) spectral region, and additional lines in the EPR spectrum of manganese have been observed to emerge in the EPR spectrum of manganese as a result of BaCl2 substitution for BaF2 in the ZBLAN glass. The ratio of the concentration of free activator ions to that of clustered ions has been estimated quantitatively. It has been shown that, at high doping levels, the manganese and europium ions in the glasses are predominantly clustered, and only a small part of them are present as isolated ions. The synthesis and characterization of multicolor light-emitting nanomaterials based on rare earths (RE3+) are of great importance due to their possible use in optoelectronic devices, such as LEDs or displays. In the present work, oxyfluoride glass-ceramics containing BaF2 nanocrystals co-doped with Tb3+, Eu3+ ions were fabricated from amorphous xerogels at 350 °C. The analysis of the thermal behavior of fabricated xerogels was performed using TG/DSC measurements (thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC)). The crystallization of BaF2 phase at the nanoscale was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the changes in silicate sol–gel host were determined by attenuated total reflectance infrared (ATR-IR) spectroscopy. The luminescent characterization of prepared sol–gel materials was carried out by excitation and emission spectra along with decay analysis from the 5D4 level of Tb3+. As a result, the visible light according to the electronic transitions of Tb3+ (5D4 → 7FJ (J = 6–3)) and Eu3+ (5D0 → 7FJ (J = 0–4)) was recorded. It was also observed that co-doping with Eu3+ caused the shortening in decay times of the 5D4 state from 1.11 ms to 0.88 ms (for xerogels) and from 6.56 ms to 4.06 ms (for glass-ceramics). Thus, based on lifetime values, the Tb3+/Eu3+ energy transfer (ET) efficiencies were estimated to be almost 21% for xerogels and 38% for nano-glass-ceramics. The influence of erbium ion concentration on the optical properties of BaF2:ErF3 crystals was investigated. Four ErF3 concentration (0.05, 0.08, 0.15 and 0.5 mol% ErF3)-doped BaF2 crystals were obtained using the Bridgman technique. Room temperature optical absorption in the 250–850 nm spectral range was measured, and the photoluminescence (PL) and decay times were also investigated. The Judd–Ofelt (JO) approximation was used, taking into account four absorption peaks (at 377, 519, 653 and 802 nm). The JO intensity parameters, Ωt (t = 2, 4, 6), were calculated. The influence of the ErF3 concentration on the JO parameters, branching ratio, radiative transition probability and radiative lifetime were studied. The obtained results were compared with measured values and with those reported in the literature. Under excitation at 380 nm, the well-known green (539 nm) and red (668 nm) emissions were obtained. The calculated and experimental radiative lifetimes were in millisecond range for green and red emissions. The intensity of the PL spectra varied with the Er3+ ion concentration. The emission intensity increased linearly or exponentially, depending on the ErF3 concentration. Under excitation at 290 nm, separate to the green and red emissions, a new UV emission band (at 321 nm) was obtained.
