Copper sulfide deposition on Kraft paper in oil-immersed transformers is found to be accelerated by di-tert-butyl p-cresol (DBPC), which is widely used as an antioxidant, and paraffinic hydrocarbons in their oils, which is verified in laboratory experiments. DBPC can prolong the lifetime of precursors of the copper sulfide deposition by reacting decomposition products of copper dibenzyl disulfide (Cu-DBDS) complex and by creating the Cu-DBPC complex. Because the lifetime of the Cu-DBPC complex is far longer than that of the Cu-DBDS complex, considerable amounts of copper sulfide are deposited on Kraft paper instead of being formed on the surface of copper. A good correlation is obtained between the concentration of paraffinic hydrocarbons and the amount of copper sulfide deposited on Kraft paper in the three commercial oils. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Overpressure is always considered as a severe problem in the oil industry. Besides creating life risks through serious accidents while drilling, failure to correctly identify high-pressure intervals causes a significant increase in costs and prolongs the drilling process. Kazhdumi Formation in the Abadan Plain is considered as a high-pressure formation in several wells. Various reasons can cause overpressure problem. Hydrocarbon generation is one cause of abnormal pressure in source rocks. Understanding hydrocarbon generation potential can be a helpful approach since the Kazhdumi Formation is considered as a probable source rock in this area. In this paper, in order to better understand the problem of abnormal pressure in Kazhdumi Formation, geochemical concepts and tools have been applied. To that way, 1D petroleum system modeling of five wells was done, and the thermal maturity level of Kazhdumi Formation was determined and then, compared with drilling records. The results indicate that in wells where this formation has sufficient organic matter and has reached an early mature level, there is an abnormal pressure problem. Otherwise, this formation does not show abnormal pressure. Also, geochemical data are not available in all drilled wells, which makes impossible the assessing of hydrocarbon generation role. Therefore, petrophysical well logs (sonic (DT), neutron (NPHI), density (RHOB), spectral gamma ray (SGR), and resistivity (RES)) as well as 137 sets of geochemical data belonging to 13 wells from 7 oilfields in the Abadan Plain were used to predict geochemical indicators. Using artificial neural networks, geochemical data of a well in Abadan Plain were predicted. This selected well has a high-pressure problem in Kazhdumi Formation, but no geochemical data are available in this well. The results of predicted geochemical data show that the high-pressure phenomenon in this well may also be due to hydrocarbon generation. The precise understanding of the abnormal pressure, resulting from hydrocarbons generation, requires comprehensive studies and a full investigation of the studied area. However, the results of this paper help to predict approximately the behavior of the source rocks before drilling. Acquiring this overview will aid in reducing drilling hazards and costs. Selective oxidation of tetralin by molecular oxygen over mesoporous CrMCM-41 molecular sieve catalyst using supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) solvent has been investigated. CrMCM-41 catalyst gave high selectivity (96.2%) and good yield (63.4%) of 1-tetralone. The presence of scCO2medium improves 1-tetralone selectivity and suppresses leaching of chromium from the CrMCM-41. The activity over recycled CrMCM-41 remains nearly the same under the present experimental conditions. The effect of the reaction parameters on CrMCM-41 was also studied in detail along with comparison of its catalytic activities with other mesoporous catalysts, viz.MnMCM-41, CoMCM-41, microporous CrAPO-5, CoMFI, and macroporous Cr/SiO2catalyst, respectively. In addition this catalytic system was also applied for the oxidation of other benzylic compounds such as indane, fluorene, acenaphthene and diphenylmethane. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The synthesis of covalently linked dimers, containing two resorcin[4]arene moieties connected over two 9,10-functionalized anthracene units, is reported. Besides the synthetic route, which involves for example the formation of anthracene-9,10-dialkanols (4and 5), and characterization of the compounds, the photochemical properties, introduced through the anthracene groups, were investigated by means of UV/VIS spectroscopy. Both resorcin[4]arene dimers (1and 2) were able to undergo an intramolecular [4 + 4] cycloaddition, therefore changing the size of the inner cavity. Unfortunately, the back reaction, which was expected to take place on irradiation below 300 nm or upon heating, was not observed yet and will be the focus of our future work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Philopatric behavior has been demonstrated in a wide taxonomic spread of animals. In temperate environments, overwinteredPolisteswasp foundresses often return to their natal nest prior to initiating colony construction. Previous research has shown that these spring foundresses can identify the natal nest in the absence of landmark and gross morphological cues. Hydrocarbons are essential recognition cues forPolistesnest and nestmate discrimination, but cuticular hydrocarbon profiles can become homogenized when foundresses overwinter in mixed colony groups. We examined the hydrocarbon profiles ofPolistes dominulusfoundresses and nests before and after an overwintering period, and found that the hydrocarbon profiles of nests remain unique over time and that this uniqueness is influenced by the original foundresses. Our data raise the possibility that in returning to the natal nest, foundresses reacquire their colony-specific signature, which may play a role in the formation of cooperative associations. In multiple-foundress nests of the wasp Polistes dominulus, dominance hierarchies are established among foundresses, and only the dominant (=alpha) individual lays eggs. The alpha female can be distinguished from subordinate females and workers on the basis of the proportions of some hydrocarbons present on the cuticle, suggesting that chemical signaling of her reproductive status could occur. P. dominulus is also the host species of the obligate social parasite Polistes sulcifer. After aggressively usurping host colonies and behaviorally replacing the host alpha female, parasites are characterized by a change in the proportions of their cuticular hydrocarbons to match that of the host cuticular profile at both species and colony levels. In the current study, we demonstrate that P. sulcifer queens also modify their cuticular hydrocarbon proportions after usurpation to match that of the host alpha female. Parasite females, therefore, acquire the dominant rank in host colonies both reproductively and chemically by mimicking the typical alpha profile of the host. Parasite females were not able to fully inhibit ovary development in host foundresses, and 10 days after usurpation, parasites, alpha and beta foundresses show similar chemical profiles and ovarian development. Methods are introduced for calculating thermophysical properties of the common volatile media, such as hydrocarbon mixtures in a petrochemical plant. Using a suitable equation of state for simulating thermodynamic equilibrium of the media and taking parallel face seals as geometrical models, a computer program for predicting seal performance of various phase states mechanical face seals (MFS) operating with the mixtures is presented. Based on theoretical analysis and experimental results, a criterion named fluid film pressure coefficient Km for identifying phase states and phase states stability of MFS is put forward. An appropriate model for determining mean face temperature is set up and compared to the test results. It is shown that the predicted results are in excellent agreement with the test results. It is proved that the methods and program may be useful in practice. It is concluded that performance of MFS can be predicted only if thermophysical properties of a sealed medium could be expressed in suitable expressions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Non-polar solvents like hexane allow ionization of insoluble drugs, peptides, nucleotides and phospholipids as solids from paper. Ambient ionization is achieved simply by application of a high voltage to the wet paper. One of the most important contributions of forensic entomology is to assist criminal expertise to determine the postmortem interval, which depends on the duration of the immature stages of insects of forensic interest. On the other hand, the time of development of the different stages varies according to the species; therefore, its identification is essential. Currently, few studies have investigated the use of cuticular hydrocarbons, and none regarding fatty acids, as complementary taxonomic tools to expedite species identification. Therefore, we evaluated whether cuticular hydrocarbons together with fatty acids of eggs of flies of the family Calliphoridae, main group of forensic interest, can be used to distinguish species. The analyses were performed by chromatographic techniques. The results show that there are significant differences between the composition of cuticular hydrocarbons and fatty acids between species and, therefore, they can be used to provide a complementary taxonomic tool to expedite the forensic expertise., (© 2019 American Academy of Forensic Sciences.)

Social insects depend on their nests for protection against predation and abiotic threats. Accordingly, the chemical compounds present in the material wasps use to build their nests can both facilitate communication and repel predators. It is herein hypothesized that different wasp species build their nests with different structure and substrate materials and that such materials consist of chemical compounds related to unique wasp behavior and outside temperature variation. To test this hypothesis, nests were collected from three species of social wasps, the samples of which were subjected to temperature variation under laboratory conditions. The compounds present in the substrate were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. Chemical compounds identified in the nest material of the three species responded differently to temperature variation. Chemical compounds from Polybia nests were altered significantly when subjected to temperature variation, whereas the nests of Polistes versicolor did not significantly change in relation to the control. The differences found between Polistes and Polybia nests may be related to genetic factors, but also to the type of nest they construct. It is possible that divergent evolutionary strategies for maintaining colony temperature, as a function of the chemical composition of the nests, may have appeared between wasps that have open and closed nests. In relatively small colonies, nest substrate is more resistant to temperature variation because it is composed of a greater diversity of elements and thus capable of holding heavier, longer carbon chains. Our results suggest that chemical compounds in the nest material of the three wasp species analysed responded differently to fluctuating ambient temperatures and that such variation could result from the biochemical differences of unique wasp species or from thermoregulation strategies of colonies., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Petroleum hydrocarbons reach the deep-sea following natural and anthropogenic factors. The process by which they enter deep-sea microbial food webs and impact the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and other elements is unclear. Hydrostatic pressure (HP) is a distinctive parameter of the deep sea, although rarely investigated. Whether HP alone affects the assembly and activity of oil-degrading communities remains to be resolved. Here we have demonstrated that hydrocarbon degradation in deep-sea microbial communities is lower at native HP (10 MPa, about 1000 m below sea surface level) than at ambient pressure. In long-term enrichments, increased HP selectively inhibited obligate hydrocarbon-degraders and downregulated the expression of beta-oxidation-related proteins (i.e., the main hydrocarbon-degradation pathway) resulting in low cell growth and CO 2 production. Short-term experiments with HP-adapted synthetic communities confirmed this data, revealing a HP-dependent accumulation of citrate and dihydroxyacetone. Citrate accumulation suggests rates of aerobic oxidation of fatty acids in the TCA cycle were reduced. Dihydroxyacetone is connected to citrate through glycerol metabolism and glycolysis, both upregulated with increased HP. High degradation rates by obligate hydrocarbon-degraders may thus be unfavourable at increased HP, explaining their selective suppression. Through lab-scale cultivation, the present study is the first to highlight a link between impaired cell metabolism and microbial community assembly in hydrocarbon degradation at high HP. Overall, this data indicate that hydrocarbons fate differs substantially in surface waters as compared to deep-sea environments, with in situ low temperature and limited nutrients availability expected to further prolong hydrocarbons persistence at deep sea.

Drilling is one of the most challenging and expensive processes in hydrocarbon extraction and geothermal well development. Dysfunctions faced during drilling can increase the non-productive time (NPT) greatly, resulting in inflating the drilling cost and also pose a safety concern. One of the main problems faced during drilling that limits the life of drilling equipment and tools and decreases the overall productivity of the system is drilling vibrations. These vibrations can be categorized into three modes: axial, lateral, and torsional. Stick-slip vibrations are a type of torsional vibration in which the bottom hole assembly (BHA) periodically stops to rotate followed by a spike in the bottom hole RPM. This paper provides a comprehensive review of techniques used to control and mitigate torsional vibration with an emphasis on stick-slip. A brief introduction to drillstring and friction modeling is presented followed by a concise summary of passive control techniques to control stick-slip. Then the focus is shifted to an up-to-date review of active control and machine learning for stick-slip control and mitigation. The paper ultimately highlights the importance of adapting novel control and mitigation concepts to improve stick slip detection and improve the overall drilling process.
