This article looks at 33 economics books that were published before 1750 and appeared in ten editions or more before 1850. This is a period – before Physiocracy and before the works of Adam Smith – which has been largely neglected in the history of economic thought. The article sheds new light on the early bestselling contributions of German and Italian economists, and on an internationally famous Spanish economist at the time. The article outlines the relevant theory and research on corporate governance and outlines of a number of issues that needs to be addressed in future work. It discusses that theoretical point of view is concerned with linking different aspects of corporate governance with firm performance. An outline on the new discoveries is presented. It infers that the notion of corporate governance as a system of interrelated elements having strategic or institutional complementarities has been proposed within the economics literature.

Abstract: This paper compares public and private information certification in a simple class of communication games with one sender and two receivers. It is shown that, contrary to the cheap talk setting of [Farrell, J., Gibbons, R., 1989. Cheap talk with two audiences. American Economic Review 79, 1214–1223], allowing certifiable statements excludes mutual discipline (i.e., full information revelation in public but not in private) but allows for mutual subversion (i.e., full information revelation in private but not in public). In the latter case, the sender is always better off with public communication, while in other situations he may prefer either private or public communication. Compared to the previous models of strategic information revelation the paper also emphasizes the role of the “common belief ” consistency condition of the strong version of sequential equilibrium. The article presents a systematic discussion of the evolution of human capital theory and offers an assessment of its current state. It tries to pinpoint a few turning points in the development of the literature since the 1962 issue of the "Journal of Economy," mainly through the prisms of subsequent conferences and major works that led to significant expansions of the original themes that helped define the field. Two influential books that gave the concept its theoretical and empirical footing are Gary Becker's "Human Capital" and Jacob Mincer's "Schooling, Experience, and Earnings."

This article extends ideas from the economics literature on multiple output production and efficiency to develop methods for comparing baseball players that take into account the many dimensions to batting performance. A key part of this approach is the output aggregator. The weights in this output aggregator can he selected a priori (as is done with batting or slugging averages) or can he estimated statistically based on the performance of the best players in baseball. Once the output aggregator is obtained, an individual player can then be measured relative to the best, and a number between 0 and 1 characterstics his performance as a fraction of the best. This section presents information on several readings that may be helpful to teachers of undergraduate economics. In the article entitled, Tenure and Other Unusual Personnel Practices in Academia, Aloysius Siow shows how distinctive features of academia alleviate the problems of specialization, obsolescence, and asymmetric information. The November 1997 Congressional Budget Office study, Federalism and Environmental Protection: Case Studies for Drinking Water and Ground-Level Ozone, will be quite useful in public finance and environmental economics classes. Income and Productivity in North America is a collection of papers from the 1997 seminar sponsored by the Commission for Labor Cooperation of the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation.

The article investigates the changing industrial organization of the economics journal market over the period 1970-1990. The authors collected detailed information on citations in 1970 for 50 selected economics journals indexed by the Index of Economics Articles. The findings suggest that the overall growth in citations to scholarly economics literature over the 1970-1990 period exceeded the growth in the quantity of published, scholarly, economics literature. In addition, the number of pages published in scholarly economics journals increased between 1970 and 1990. On the other hand, there was a steady decline in concentration of citations among the top economics journals over the period 1965-1990 due to existing journals taking market share from the premier journals.

The article comments on Jeffrey G. Williamson's review of the book "Productivity and American Leadership," by William J. Baumol, Sue Anne Batey Blackman and Edward N. Wolff. Abstract--This study finds that a strong bibliometric regularity exists in the publication pattern in the economics literature; the number of authors publishing n papers is approximately 1/n[sup c] of those publishing one paper. The economics literature conforms very well to the model with c = 1.84 if data are taken from a large collection of journals. When applied to individual journals, the result shows that values of c range from 2.04 to 3.11. This paper also reports the degree of author concentration among leading economics journals. Finally, this study finds that the graduates of three graduate programs account for more than half of the top 100 authors, indicating strong institutional dominance in the production of the most prolific authors. This short note links days and delays in refereeing with some basic characteristics of the reviewers. An altruistic approach is used, and 1994 data from Hamermesh is augmented and it is found that (i) long articles, (ii) referees outside the USA and Canada, (iii) lack of academic experience, (iv) relatively less requested referees, and (v) lower income, are linked with possible delays in response of the referees. There are no differences in gender, type of journal (general or specialized) or prestige of referees. Academic experience is not non-monotonic. 'Networking' effects are not present. The article reports on a user study of economics books at the University of South Florida, which has an enrollment of some 21,000 students and an economics faculty of 20. The purposes of this study are to indicate the ways by which user information might be inexpensively obtained from a library and to suggest how that information might be used to aid in acquisition decisions. According to the author improvement in the economics collections of libraries will strengthen the process of university-level economic education.
