The Guidelines on Building a Market-Oriented Green Technology Innovation System, which was released by China in 2019, has become a powerful signal to guide the development of green technology innovation (GTI). In the current digital strategy of China, the public media has become a key factor for promoting the transparency of enterprise environmental information. This paper measures the GTI efficiency of the listed paper enterprises in China as well as incorporating media attention into the research framework to explore the influencing factors of GTI of the listed paper enterprises in China during the digital economy era. The results showed that a positive media report had a positive impact on GTI and has become a new driving factor in promoting sustainable production in the digital era. Government support and openness also have a positive impact on GTI. However, negative media reports, environmental regulations, and technological innovation abilities have an inhibitory effect on the GTI efficiency of paper making enterprises. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines the digital economy's impact on rural household consumption upgrading. Existing studies remain mainly at the level of rural consumption scale and rarely address the consumption structure. The specific impact of the development of the digital economy on rural consumption upgrading and its mechanisms of action deserves in-depth study and consideration. We analyzed the related content using the fixed-effect model, the instrumental variable method (IV), the mediation effect model, and three-year panel data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS). This study found that, at the scale level, the digital economy contributes to expanding rural household consumption. At the structural level, the digital economy significantly increases the share of enjoyment-oriented household consumption but has no significant effect on development-oriented consumption. Income is an important transmission mechanism for the digital economy to improve rural household consumption. This paper uses inter-provincial panel data from 2011 to 2017, a linear regression model, and a threshold model to conduct empirical analyses of the impact of the digital economy on China’s overall economic growth and the three main sectors of industry. The paper then investigates the impact and effects the digital economy has had on the economic growth of the three main sectors of industry in China’s eastern, central, and western regions. Finally, the paper investigates the most significant differences among the various regions and the threshold effects of urbanization levels on the relationship between the digital economy and economic growth. The findings indicate a significantly positive correlation between the digital economy and regional economic growth. Moreover, geographical factors notably influence this correlation. The digital economy exerts a positive effect on all sectors of industry. It may not substantially impact industrial development in regions with highly developed infrastructure. Regarding the other regions, the digital economy exhibits varying degrees of impact due to the differences in the specific indicators. The conclusion drawn by the threshold model is that the magnitude of the threshold effect correlates with geographic factors. No threshold effect was observed in the eastern region, while the threshold effect occurred in the central region when the urbanization levels for the provinces were below 0.6645. Similarly, the threshold effect was noted in the western region when the urbanization level was below 0.3931. Considering all of this, the study also offers policy recommendations that will help balance the regional development of digital economies, accelerate the digital transformation of traditional industries, enhance digital infrastructure construction, refine the formulation and implementation of data policy, and establish relevant incentive mechanisms. As the most active field in China's economic development, the digital economy is crucial to the high-quality development of enterprises. Taking Chinese-listed agricultural enterprises as research samples, this paper discusses the effect of the digital economy on promoting the high-quality development of agricultural enterprises and the mechanism behind it from the perspective of total factor productivity of enterprises. The study found that the digital economy significantly promoted the improvement of total factor productivity of agricultural enterprises and enabled the high-quality development of agricultural enterprises, and this conclusion remained valid after controlling for endogeneity and conducting robustness tests. In terms of action mechanisms, the digital economy is conducive to promoting green innovation and promoting the high-quality development of agricultural enterprises; However, entrepreneurial activity has a masking effect. Further analysis shows that the digital economy plays a more significant role in promoting non-resource-intensive agricultural enterprises located in northern China. At the same time, the higher the industrial structure and financial development level of the region, the more positive impact the digital economy can play. The digital economy is gradually emerging as a new driving force and engine for high-quality economic development. In the context of reaching carbon peak and carbon neutrality, can the digital economy empower the development of urban green technology innovation? Based on the panel data of 274 cities in China from 2011 to 2019, this paper measures the development level of digital economy at the city level and employs the two-way fixed effect model to empirically analyze the impact of digital economy on urban green technology innovation. The results indicate that: (1) Digital economy development exert a significant positive impact on urban green technology innovation. This conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests. (2) Digital economy enhances urban green technology innovation by optimizing human capital structure, enhancing the level of financial and credit investment, and strengthening public environmental concern. (3) Heterogeneity analyses show that the digital economy has a greater positive effect on green technology innovation in the eastern region and non-resource cities. The higher the level of intellectual property protection and the better the development of the factor market, and the lower the intensity of environmental regulation, the greater the positive effect of the digital economy on urban green technology innovation. How has China's privacy protection strategy been developed, with its broad scope and stringent requirements for data localization and cross-border data flows? What are the broader geopolitical implications of its divergence from Western models of data privacy? This paper argues that China's privacy protection strategy, characterized by its comprehensive regulatory framework and government access to data, is redefining the contours of global data governance and creating new geopolitical fault lines. Drawing on official documents, laws, regulations, and a case study, this paper highlights the evolution of the regulatory framework in response to emerging challenges posed by technological innovations and the wider geopolitical environment. This paper contributes to the broader discussion regarding the implications of China's privacy protection approach, highlighting potential normative clashes with countries that favor a more open digital economy. With the proposal of "Carbon Peak and Carbon Neutrality" goals, China is facing a more serious carbon emissions reduction situation, and how the booming digital economy effectively helps China's carbon emissions reduction is one of the most urgent things that should be solved. To study the impact of the digital economy on carbon emission intensity, this paper is based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China (excluding Tibet, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan) from 2011 to 2021, and applies the double-fixed effect model and the threshold effect model to study the impact of the digital economy on carbon emission intensity and the mechanism of its action, as well as to analyze the mechanism of the digital economy's action on carbon emission intensity from the perspective of technological innovation. The results of the study show that: i) The digital economy can reduce the intensity of regional carbon emissions; ii) The carbon emission reduction effect of the digital economy is non-linear, and its carbon emission reduction effect gradually increases with the level of development of the digital economy; iii) In addition to the direct impact of the digital economy on carbon emission intensity, it also has an indirect impact on carbon emissions through technological innovation; iv) There is regional heterogeneity in the carbon emission reduction effect of the digital economy, and the carbon emission reduction effect is more significant in the central and western parts of the country and regions with a high level of human capital development. Based on the conclusions obtained, this paper suggests: i) The rational integration of the digital economy and regional development should be strengthened; ii) Strong provinces in the digital economy should be encouraged to help weaker provinces, to narrow the "digital divide" between provinces; iii) Differentiated development strategies should be formulated in accordance with local conditions, to give full play to the optimal effect of the digital economy in carbon emission reduction. Green economy is the core content of the high-quality economic development, and the digital economy is the new driving force to accelerate the realization of high-quality economic development. In this regard, this paper selects 248 resource-based cities in China from 2011 to 2019 as the research objects and uses the fixed effect model and mediation effect model to test the relationship between digital economy and regional green total factor productivity. We get the following conclusions: First, there is the nonlinear relationship between digital economy and regional green total factor productivity, and this relationship shows the inverted U-shape. Secondly, digital economy can influence regional green total factor productivity through the path transmission mechanism of regional technological innovation, industrial structure, and environmental regulation. Finally, the effect of digital economy on regional green total factor productivity is heterogeneous, especially in the eastern region and cities with high human capital level. With the continuous advancement of the new generation of information technology revolution, digital economy is gradually becoming an important driving force for energy transition while restructuring the new form of the economy. This paper selects panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2021, empirically verifies the special impacts of digital economy on green- oriented transition of energy by using the spatial Durbin model, and further constructs a multi-intermediary model to verify its transition pathways. The main findings are as follows: First, the overall level of green-oriented transition of energy in China's eastern coastal areas is relatively high, and the western regions have been more capable of catching up in recent years. Second, digital economy has played a significant role in promoting green-oriented transition of energy, and there is a positive spatial spillover effect. Third, digital economy could indirectly promote the green-oriented transition of energy by promoting the upgrading of industrial structure, improving the level of technological innovation and strengthening environmental regulations. Introduction: With the rapid development of digital technology and its deep integration with environmental and ecological fields, the digital economy has become an effective way to guide the transition of cities to an eco-friendly model. However, empirical studies on the nonlinear spatial effects between digital economy and ecological welfare performance are still insufficient. Methods: Based on the panel data of 270 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2020, this paper empirically examines the impact of the digital economy on the ecological welfare performance of cities and its mechanism of action using spatial econometric modeling. Results: The promotion effect of digital economy development on the ecological welfare performance of cities is characterized by the "J" shape of increasing marginal effect, and the spatial spillover effect on the ecological welfare performance of neighboring cities is the inverted "U" shape of inhibiting first and then promoting later. The mechanism test shows that the development of digital economy can enhance the ecological welfare performance of cities through the marginal incremental promotion of green technological innovation in local and neighboring cities and has a positive spatial spillover effect. The development of digital economy can have a direct U shape effect on local ecological welfare performance by influencing factor allocation efficiency and energy utilization efficiency. It also has an inverted U-shaped spatial spillover effect. Environmental regulation has an inverted U-shaped moderating effect on the local eco-welfare performance affected by the digital economy. As the level of rural revitalization increases, it produces a U-shaped moderating effect of inhibiting. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that digital economy development has a more significant facilitating effect and a positive spatial spillover effect on the ecological welfare performance of cities in central China. Discussion: This paper will provide a reference for the synergistic optimization of digital economy development and ecological welfare performance among regions. In this paper, 22 indexes are selected at three levels, including the informatization development level, the Internet development level, and the digital transaction development level, based on China's provincial panel data from 2011 to 2020, so as to build a digital economy development index system. Moreover, 28 basic indexes are selected from three aspects, including energy construction, energy production and energy consumption, so as to develop an energy economy development evaluation index system. The development index of China's digital economy and energy economy are measured by using the entropy weight method. The effect of the digital economy on the energy economy and its mechanism are tested by the static panel, the dynamic panel, and the mediating effect and regulating effect models. The results indicate that the digital economy has pronouncedly promoted the development of China's energy economy, and the development of the digital economy can have an effect on the rationalization of the industrial structure and then affect the development of the energy economy, and there is an intermediary effect. Moreover, the upgrading of the industrial structure is conducive to regulating the digital economy and facilitates the development of the energy economy. The development of the energy economy can be better promoted by focusing on the coordinated regional layout of the digital economy development, building a reliable energy commodity trading platform, and expediting the optimization and upgrading of the industrial structure. Under the new development model, the digital economy has become a new engine to promote the green development of the economy and realize the goal of "double carbon". Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2020, this paper empirically investigates the impact of the development of the digital economy on energy and carbon emissions using a series of econometric models such as baseline regression, a mechanism test, and the spatial Durbin model, etc. Common prosperity plays an intermediary role between digital economy development and carbon emissions; digital economic development optimizes resource allocation, effectively solves the problem of uneven resource distribution, and reduces energy and carbon emissions while achieving common prosperity. In addition, green innovation, industrial structure, urbanization level, R&D intensity, and the degree of marketization also have different degrees of influence on energy and carbon emissions. Purpose: By discussing the spatial spillover effect and regional heterogeneity of digital economy and green agricultural development level, this paper aims to provide countermeasures and suggestions for the better development of green agriculture in the contemporary era when digital economy is universally developed and at the same time provide development suggestions suitable for green agriculture's development characteristics and initial conditions for different regions. Design/methodology/approach: This paper discusses the theoretical foundation of the digital economy and green agriculture development and utilizes panel data from 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2018. By employing the Super-Efficiency Slack-based Measure and Malmquist-Luenberger (SBM-ML) model based on unexpected output to measure the total factor productivity of green agriculture and employing the spatial panel Durbin model to empirically test the spatiotemporal effects of the digital economy on green agriculture development from both temporal and spatial dimensions. Finally, the model is tested for robustness as well as heterogeneity. Findings: The research findings are as follows: First, from the perspective of time effect, digital economy has a continuous driving effect on the development of green agriculture and with the passage of time, this effect becomes more and more prominent; second, from the perspective of spatial effect, digital economy has a significant positive impact on the development of local green agriculture, while digital economy has a significant negative impact on the development of surrounding green agriculture. Finally, the impact of digital economy on the development of green agriculture shows significant differences in different dimensions and regions. Originality/value: As an important driver of economic growth, the digital economy has injected new impetus into agricultural and rural development. Along with the intensifying environmental pollution problems, how to influence the green development of agriculture through the digital economy is a proposition worthy of attention nowadays. The digital economy is integral in driving economic growth, particularly of high-quality standards. Against the backdrop of the ''Double Carbon'' project, exploring the impact of the digital economy on green agricultural development bears tremendous practical significance. Thus, this study aims to investigate how the digital economy affects agricultural green total factor productivity (GTFP). The entropy-TOPSIS method and SBM-GML index are used to measure core variables quantitatively. In addition, two-way fixed effects panel data models, Tobit, and intermediary effect models are implemented. Three research findings emerge. First, China's agricultural GTFP level generally experiences an upward trend, and the development of the digital economy has a significant positive effect on increasing agricultural GTFP. Second, the digital economy mainly promotes agricultural technology innovation that boosts agricultural GTFP. Third, Western China experiences a more significant positive effect of the digital economy on agricultural GTFP than Central and Eastern China. The paper discusses the effects of the digital economy on highquality urban development and its mechanism. Theoretically, the digital economy can empower high-quality development by boosting entrepreneurial vitality. Empirically, the paper measures the overall level of the digital economy and high-quality development of the 222 Chinese cities at and above the prefecture level during 2011–2016, depicts the entrepreneurial vitality of the cities with the microscopic data of the business registration information and makes quantitative analysis on this basis. The result shows: Digital economy has remarkably improved high-quality development and this conclusion still exists after the robustness test selecting historical data as the instrumental variables and the Broadband China pilot policy as the quasi experiment. The analysis of the mechanism of action indicates that encouraging public entrepreneurship is an important mechanism of the digital economy to release the dividend of highquality development. Finally, thanks to the threshold model and the spatial model, it is found that the positive effect of the digital economy has the characteristics of nonlinear increment and spatial spillover of the “marginal effects.” The research of the paper stimulates the reasons for high-quality development and the understanding of the effects, mechanisms and regional differences of high-quality development empowered by the digital economy. The development of the digital economy in the modern era significantly embodies a country's comprehensive strength. This paper uses the data from China's 2012 and 2017 input-output tables to analyze the linkage structure between the digital economy industry and other industries using the average propagation length model and social network analysis. The Weaver–Thomas model was used to obtain the industrial linkage matrix and network characteristics. An industrial chain map of the digital economy was depicted as the core. The digital economy is an important engine for promoting green economic development, and the integration of the digital and real economies can accelerate the transformation of the real economy. In order to explore the multifaceted influence of digital economy on forestry green total factor productivity and its specific presentation form, based on the panel data of 277 cities in China from 2013 to 2019, this paper first used the super SBM model to measure the level of forestry green total factor productivity and adopted the entropy method to measure the level of the digital economy in each region. Secondly, the influence and mechanism of the digital economy on green total factor productivity in forestry were explored by using fixed-effect and intermediate-effect models, and the heterogeneity of the digital economy on forestry green total factor productivity was analyzed based on different regional classification methods. Finally, the spatial spillover effect of the digital economy was explored in depth by the spatial Durbin model. The results are as follows: firstly, there is a significant inverted U-shaped relationship between the digital economy and forestry green total factor productivity, which first promotes and then inhibits. Secondly, the relationship between the digital economy and the level of urban green innovation shows a positive U-shaped relationship, first inhibiting and then promoting, and can have an indirect impact on forestry green total factor productivity by promoting the level of green innovation. Third, China is still on the left side of the inverted U-shaped relationship between the digital economy and forestry green total factor productivity, i.e., it is at a stage where the digital economy can significantly contribute to forestry green total factor productivity. Fourth, the effect of the digital economy on green total factor productivity in forestry is heterogeneous in the east, central, and west and is more pronounced in regions with faster economic development or rich natural resources. This paper explores the spatial impact effects and spatio-temporal heterogeneity of the digital economy on urban carbon emissions (CO2). Specifically, firstly, the Digital Economy Index (DEI) system of 285 cities in China was constructed and the Global Principal Component Analysis (GPCA) was applied to evaluate the digital economy level of Chinese cities. Based on spatial correlation and spatial heterogeneity, the paper explores the global spatial impact and spatio-temporal heterogeneity of the impact of digital economy on CO2 using spatial Durbin model (SDM) and geographic time-weighted regression (GTWR), respectively. And the mechanism variables are used to further demonstrate the mechanism effect and nonlinear characteristics of the impact of digital economy on CO2. The findings indicate that (1) the advancement of the digital economy is beneficial for achieving carbon abatement goals, and the impact of the digital economy on CO2 mitigation remains stable across several robustness tests. (2) The spatial spillover effect of the digital economy on the impact of carbon reduction is not significant. And there is significant temporal and spatial heterogeneity in the impact of the digital economy on carbon emissions. (3) According to the mechanism analysis, the digital economy reduces carbon emissions by encouraging the development of green technologies and promoting the modernization of industrial structures. And there are non-linear characteristics of this effect. This study concludes that the digital economy can support China's goal of achieving "carbon peak and carbon neutrality." However, it is important to consider the differences in urban development over time and space. As the digital economy grows rapidly around the world, how would it impact carbon emissions? This paper discusses this issue from the perspective of heterogeneous innovation. Based on the panel data of 284 cities in China from 2011 to 2020, this paper empirically examines the impact of the digital economy on carbon emissions as well as the mediating and threshold effects of different innovation modes. The study finds that the digital economy can significantly reduce carbon emissions; this conclusion holds after a series of robustness tests. Independent innovation and imitative innovation are important channels through which the digital economy affects carbon emissions, but technological introduction is not an effective way. For regions with high levels of financial investment in science and innovative talents, the reduction in carbon emissions from the digital economy is more significant. Further research shows that the effect of the digital economy on carbon emissions has a threshold feature, with an inverted U-shaped relationship between the two, and that an increase in autonomous innovation and imitation innovation can enhance the digital economy's carbon reduction effect. This paper examines the coupling coordination degree between digital economy and green technology innovation in 19 urban agglomerations across China from 2011 to 2020. Through the analysis of the coupling coordination degree model, spatial autocorrelation, multi-distance spatial clustering analysis, kernel density analysis and grey correlation model, this study uncovers the mechanism of coupling between digital economy and green technology in Chinese urban agglomerations. Data analysis revealed a significant increase in the coupling coordination between the digital economy and green technology innovation within urban agglomerations. However, there are noticeable spatial imbalances in this trend. Additionally, the multi-distance spatial distance analysis highlights a shift from a random distribution to a clustered distribution of spatial characteristics. The polarization features vary among each urban agglomeration and exhibit a significant positive spatial correlation. Factors such as economic sustainability, creative talent, policy support, digital impetus, and technological support will affect the coupling mechanism of green technology innovation and the digital economy in China's urban agglomerations. Policy recommendations are proposed to foster the development of the digital economy, promote coordinated growth within and beyond urban clusters, and ultimately build a digital ecological civilization that is both green and intelligent. China's digital economy development is a strategic decision to construct a new development model for the nation's economic growth and to pave the way to fostering high-quality economic growth. Since the Chinese government first introduced its strategy for developing digital economy in 2016, the Chongqing Municipal Government has responded positively by implementing various policy initiatives. This paper examines and evaluates the overall level of Chongqing's digital economy from 2014 to 2021 and analyses the development process through a mixed research method. The results show a growth trend of continuous improvement, with the speed of digital economy development in Chongqing significantly accelerating after 2017. However, there are still some challenges, such as weak innovation capacity, lagging digital service capability, imbalance in the internal structure of digital economy, and uneven development within the region. Therefore, Chongqing must make some efforts to support the advance of digital economy by developing infrastructure, cultivating market players, and enhancing innovation capabilities, thereby forming a solid foundation for growth. Digital economy has become the primary motivation for high-quality economic development. Upon comprehensively analyzing the connotation of digital economy, this paper constructs an evaluation system from development environment, digital industrialization, industrial digitalization, and digital governance to measure China’s digital economy index from 2016 to 2018 using the entropy-based TOPSIS method. Also, based on the improved Feder dual sector model, this paper discusses the theoretical mechanism of digital economy promoting high-quality economic development directly and through improving economic efficiency and economic structure, and carries out an empirical test. According to findings, on the one hand, China is scaling up digital economy and accelerating digital transformation; on the other hand, the greater the likelihood that high-quality economic development is constrained by low economic efficiency and unreasonable economic structure, the greater the role of digital economy in promoting high-quality economic development. therefore, this paper puts forward recommendations for China’s high-quality economic development, such as advancing new infrastructure construction, developing digital economy, improving economic efficiency and economic structure, and transforming the government governance model. The digital economy is an important way to relieve current pressure on resources and the environment. Based on ecological modernization theory and global value chain theory, this paper adopts panel data of 17 manufacturing industries from 2000 to 2014, uses the non-radial directional distance function and the meta-frontier method to measure China's green total factor productivity (GTFP) and its sub-indices, and takes the embedding degree and embedding position as moderating variables and threshold variables to construct an econometric model to explore the relationship among the digital economy, global value chain, and GTFP. The results show that (1) the digital economy has a positive effect on GTFP in both time and space. And in terms of time, the digital economy mainly enhances GTFP by improving technical efficiency and narrowing the technology gap. (2) Global value chain embedding position positively moderates the relationship between the digital economy and GTFP; In terms of sub-samples, labor-intensive and capital-intensive industries show the same impact characteristics as the total sample. (3) Further, it is found that the digital economy and GTFP have nonlinear characteristics. There is a single threshold effect on the embedding position. When the embedding position is low, the digital economy is positively correlated with GTFP but not significant; when the threshold value is crossed, the digital economy can significantly promote GTFP. The conclusions of this paper are helpful to realize the digital economy to promote the green development of the manufacturing industry, and provide an effective reference for the realization mechanism of China's green economy transformation and ecological civilization construction in the post-pandemic era. The digital economy is crucial to promoting green technology innovation and development. However, there needs to be more research on the relationship between the digital economy, digital talent aggregation (DTA), and green technology innovation (GTI). Therefore, based on the data from 30 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions in mainland China (excluding Tibet) from 2011 to 2020, this paper uses fixed effect, threshold effect, moderating effect model, and spatial econometric model to make an empirical analysis of this research direction. The results show that (1) there is a nonlinear relationship between the digital economy and green technology innovation (GTI). This effect has regional heterogeneity effects. In the central and western regions, the digital economy is more prominent in promoting green technology innovation (GTI). (2) Digital talent aggregation (DTA) has a negative moderating effect on the influence of the digital economy on promoting green technology innovation (GTI). (3) The negative spillover effect of the digital economy on local green technology innovation (GTI) will be intensified at the spatial level due to the accumulation of digital talents. Therefore, this paper suggests that the government should actively and reasonably develop the digital economy to promote green technology innovation (GTI). In the context of China's rapidly growing digital economy, exploring the potential to reduce carbon emissions from the perspective of enterprise digitization is of vital practical significance for achieving ambitious "carbon peak" and "carbon neutrality" goals. This paper uses data from Ashare listed companies as a sample pool spanning the years 2014–2020 and finds that a nonlinear, inverted U-shaped relationship exists between enterprise digital transformation and carbon emissions. We further construct several robustness tests and show that the effect remains significant after accounting for the endogeneity issue using IV regressions. Heterogeneity analysis indicates that the effect of digital transformation on carbon emissions is influenced by the regional economic development level and the ownership structure of enterprises. Notably, in non-stateowned enterprises and economically advanced regions, the influence of digital transformation on carbon emissions becomes more pronounced. This paper provides explicit policy implications. It is suggested that enterprises accelerate their digital transformation by integrating smart device development into their production and operations and government should give support to digital transformation to facilitate industrial upgrading, and further promote China's pursuit of highquality and sustainable economic development. The paper empirically examines the impact of the development of the digital economy on the employment scale and structure of China's listed companies. The results show that overall, digital economic development significantly improves the employment scale of listed companies in China. The development of the digital economy has significantly increased the share of high-skilled labor, medium- and high-skilled labor, and decreased the share of low- and medium-skilled labor and low-skilled labor. In employment positions, the development of the digital economy significantly increases the share of openings in accounting, sales, and other positions, especially in R&D. Furthermore, the employment creation effect of digital economic development is attributed to the effects of scale expansion and productivity, while the substitution of digital technology for low-skilled labor does not significantly hinder employment. This paper focuses on the impact of the digital economy on green agricultural development and the mediating role of green technology innovation. Resource-based cities, which are widely distributed in China, contribute significantly to China's sustainable development. The digital economy and the construction of ecological civilization are central issues in the sustainable development of resource-based cities, and it is necessary to analyze the impact of the digital economy on the ecological resilience of resource-based cities. Thus, this paper measures ecological resilience of 117 resource-based cities from 2011 to 2020 using the entropy weight TOPSIS (technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution; see Table 1 for a list of acronyms) method and empirically investigates the impact and mechanism of digital economy on ecological resilience using the spatial Durbin model (SDM) and intermediary effect model. The results show that the ecological resilience of resource-based cities has a certain upward trend, with a stepwise distribution pattern from east to west. There is a significant positive correlation between ecological resilience of resource-based cities, showing the phenomenon of club convergence which is primarily dominated by high-high (H–H) and low-low (L-L). The digital economy has a significant spatial spillover effect, which promotes ecological resilience of resource-based cities in the local and adjacent regions. A mechanism analysis reveals that technological innovation and industrial structure are mediators between digital economy and ecological resilience of resource-based cities, with significant heterogeneity in region and growth cycle. Among them, the intermediary role of technological innovation is stronger. Following the above findings, this paper proposes policy suggestions related to digital economy evolution and ecological resilience enhancement. Promoting high-quality economic development, boosting high-level ecological environment protection, and integrating deeply digital economy and energy efficiency has become a general trend. This paper, based on 284 prefecture-level Chinese cities from 2008 to 2018, uses the entropy weight method and super-efficient SBM-DEA model to measure the digital economy and energy efficiency (decompose into energy pure technical efficiency and energy scale efficiency), respectively. After the spatial and temporal evolution characteristics, a fixed-effect model is constructed to study the impact of the digital economy on energy efficiency. The research results show that: (1) the development of the digital economy effectively promotes energy efficiency, mainly reflected in the improvement of pure technical efficiency of energy; (2) the development of both the digital economy and the energy efficiency in China has complex spatial and temporal evolutionary characteristics, and there is heterogeneity in the impact of the digital economy on energy efficiency at the temporal and spatial levels; and (3) digital economy effectively improves energy efficiency by reducing unnecessary energy consumption through the R&D innovation effect. Sustainable rural development forms a robust foundation for economic and social sustainability. Moreover, the digital economy acts as a catalyst for advancing rural sustainable development by altering the distribution of production factors. Thus, this study concentrates on 30 provinces in China, constructing an evaluation index system for both the digital economy and rural sustainable development. The study employs various methods and models to analyze the spatiotemporal changes and driving factors affecting the coupling and coordination between these two aspects. The research findings are as follows: the coupling and coordination levels among provinces in China have been on the rise year by year. By 2022, the coupling and coordination levels of most provinces range between 0.5 and 0.6. Regional disparities are the primary determinant of the poor overall coupling and coordination level in China. In 2022, the coupling and coordination level in the eastern region is 0.6663, compared to 0.5420 in the central region and 0.5087 in the western region. Factors such as urbanization, industrial structure transformation, technological innovation, higher education, economic development, and government support significantly influence the coupling and coordination level. Nevertheless, their effects vary across regions, with a more pronounced impact in the eastern region than in the central and western regions. Therefore, this paper proposes policy recommendations, including infrastructure optimization, rural digitization promotion, regional resource allocation enhancement, cross-regional development mechanism exploration, and differentiated development strategy implementation. This paper employs a multidimensional fixed effects model and examines the impact of the digital economy on the performance of firms in traditional industries. We have identified a pattern similar to the "IT productivity paradox" observed in the United States during the 1980s. Using data from A-share listed Chinese firms from 2011–2019, we find that the digital economy significantly reduces the short-term performance of firms by intensifying market competition and increasing adjustment costs. On the contrary, the digital economy improves firms' long-term performance through accumulation of human capital and greater innovation capability. Competitive strategies strengthen the effect of the digital economy on the long-term performance of firms. Additionally, our research demonstrates that technology-intensive firms and small firms experience more pronounced negative effects in the short term but firms with high-tech titles suffer smaller shocks than other technology-intensive firms. These findings presents novel perspectives on the influence of the digital economy on firm performance, offering valuable insights for managers, investors, and policymakers involved in economic decision-making. The development of the digital economy radiates to national ecological protection and resource utilization, holding the key to haze governance. However, as the largest developing country, the impact of China's digital economy on haze pollution has received little attention. Based on the panel data of 275 prefecture-level cities in China from 2011 to 2018, this paper studies the impact and mechanism of digital economy development on haze pollution. The results of fixed effect model show that the development of digital economy has a significant negative impact on urban haze pollution in China. The results of heterogeneity analysis show that the development of digital economy has a more significant inhibitory effect on the haze pollution of resource-based cities, non-resource-based cities, eastern cities, and large cities. The quasi-natural experimental results show that the establishment of the "national big data comprehensive experimental area" is conducive to haze pollution control, which proves the conclusion that the digital economy can significantly reduce haze pollution. This paper analyzes digital economy data from Beijing and 1 Chinese province and city by a panel model and a fixed impact model. The findings are as follows: First, the development of digital participatory finance has positively influenced China's consumption level, consumption structure, consumption areas and development, mainly because it has affected the consumer goods of Chinese citizens. Second, by analyzing digital economy indicators and data at different stages of economic development, it is believed that the size and reach of the digital economy will have a more positive impact on per capita consumption in China. China's digital economy mainly affects the urban-rural structure, regional structure, and consumption habits of residents to realize the impact of the digital economy. The digital economy has a much greater impact on growth-oriented household consumption than on household consumption. Based on the findings, recommendations for action are also provided. This research focuses on the impact of the digital economy on total factor carbon productivity. Based on the panel data of China's provinces from 2009 to 2019, this paper incorporates undesired output, namely carbon emissions, into the evaluation index system, and uses the SBM-ML index to measure regional total factor carbon productivity, and uses the RAGA-PP model to measure the digital economy development index, which includes three dimensions: digital infrastructure, digital industry development, and digital economic environment. Moreover, this paper incorporates the heterogeneous threshold of technological accumulation into the framework of the impact mechanism of total factor carbon productivity and builds a threshold model to examine the impact of the digital economy on total factor carbon productivity under different technological accumulation thresholds. The research shows that, first, during the sample period, total factor carbon productivity fluctuated around the frontier, showing a certain upward trend, with significant regional heterogeneity. Second, the digital economy has a promotional effect on the total factor carbon productivity level in China and can become the new energy for the country to improve the level of green development. Third, the impact of the digital economy on total factor carbon productivity presents a significant heterogeneous threshold effect of technological accumulation, along with the increasing level of technology accumulation, the effective coefficient of the digital economy on total factor carbon productivity is increasing, and the level of significance is increasing. Last, the low-carbon driving mechanism of the digital economy has temporal and spatial heterogeneity of regional technology accumulation levels. Digital economy is a great route to promote the efficient utilization of natural resources and promote sustainability due to its high-tech, rapid growth, extensive penetration, deep integration and other characteristics. Existing study on the influencing factors of the digital economy is not deep enough and lacks the analysis on the relationship structure of factors influencing the digital economy, which is not conducive for an overall grasp of the digital economy. To correctly understand how to better develop the digital economy, this paper studies its influencing factors and the relationships between them. Based on the time-series data of China from 2002 to 2018, grey correlation analysis was applied to calculate the correlation between these influencing factors and the digital economy, and determine the major influencing factors of digital economy development in China. The Granger causality test and a review of existing research were used to judge the interrelationship of various factors. The interpretative structure model was utilized to determine the relationship structure of the main factors affecting the development of China's digital economy. The results show that the number of digital talents, state of the technology market, and degree of digitalization are direct influencing factors of the digital economy. The urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River holds a crucial strategic position in China's economic and social development landscape. Exploring the coordinated development effects within the digital economy and innovation in this area is conducive to promoting the development of the central region of China and the Yangtze River Economic Belt. This paper uses the 28 sample cities in urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River as the study sample, and constructs a digital economy indicator system and an urban innovation efficiency indicator system. Based on the coupling coordination degree model, we use kernel density estimation, the Markov chain algorithm, and the Dagum Gini coefficient decomposition method to empirically investigate the dynamic trends in coupling coordination development between the digital economy and urban innovation efficiency from 2012 to 2021. The research results reveal an overall upward trend in the digital economy, innovation efficiency, and coupling coordination development stages. However, the upward trend is accompanied by the risk of recession. Moreover, there are significant differences between cities, as highlighted by the differences between Wuhan and other cities. In the light of the findings, it is recommended that government departments take measures, including being alert to the risk of regressive development, developing cities in a realistic manner, and drawing on the experiences of outstanding cities in development. This research can provide new insights and empirical references for government entities to take measures for a more coordinated development of the digital economy and innovation efficiency in the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Grasping the development trends and patterns of the digital economy and promoting the integrated development of the digital and the real economy is a strategic choice for China's construction of new competitive advantages. Based on case studies of the growth of e-commerce, this paper develops five microeconomic propositions about the following issues: the microeconomic features of data factor that differ from traditional production factors; optimal decision-making for digital enterprises; "data + platform" architecture, data transaction governance, and digital infrastructure supply. We apply these theoretical propositions to enterprise innovative practices in different application scenarios such as driverless vehicles and manufacturing digitalization. The present study is an investigation into one possible feature of one possible future for law in the People's Republic of China. Its speculations originate from a conceptual analysis of how the law presently relates to and is challenged by computational infrastructures in China, namely platforms. It is therefore a work of legal philosophy and, tentatively, of a legal philosophy for platforms in the PRC. A legal philosophy for platforms is imperative due to the increasing influence of platforms as an organizational form within societies, political economies, and governments. Platform companies in the PRC are increasingly engaged in taking up responsibilities of the state (either unintentionally or via delegation) and the state is adopting platform logics and designs as well. Platforms represent a paradigmatic shift in political economy and law, perforating the lines between public and private, users and citizens, home and work. The result has been a rendering of certain aspects of existing regulatory and administrative frameworks as anachronistic. Updating the legal apparatus is in order, and requires generating a novel analysis of platforms. This paper argues that one feature of this new platform ontology is models. It argues that, in order to make the data and emergent complexity endemic of platforms more intelligible for its users, platforms may use models to represent dynamic and live data to make analysis easier and decision-making faster. This paper concludes that modeling this data creates opportunities for Schmidtian sovereign decision-making, introducing new regulatory issues for the state and the law. In order to make this chasm between platforms and the law clear, this paper first analyzes existing regulatory responses to the platform economy in order to articulate the nascent legal philosophy for platforms in the PRC. This analysis reveals an emergent but inconspicuous approach, one that finds the PRC participating in platform governance and carefully calculating the nature of China's platformization through a multifaceted ICT-development policy environment. The PRC's legal philosophy towards platforms can be described as one of co-regulation and one that recognizes and attempts to constrain the sovereign decision-making of platforms. Using Foucauldian and Schmitdian theories of power and sovereignty, as well as phenomenological media theories of contemporary computation, this paper analyzes City Brains, a form of platform-based urban governance aggressively pursued in the PRC, in order to identify when these moments of platform sovereign decision-making might occur. This case study discloses that an under-researched feature of platforms is their modeling capacity, defined here as platforms' propensity to solve informational complexity problems and reinforce value-generation processes by offering users representational topologies of platform data, sometimes with an interface. The case study reveals that sovereign decision-making occurs in a number of circumstances within models, such as when (1) models create new subjects in the form of aggregating data across human and non-human data into clusters, when (2) models generate new 'territories' in the form of databases and digital twins and offer opportunities for platforms to give rise to new juridical concrete orders, and when (3) models' interfaces and envelopes condition new governmentalities and publics due to their envelope power, that is, their shaping of users' phenomenological relationship to their urban environment. The City Brain case analysis illustrates what this modeling sovereignty can look like, including the following characteristics: (1) models inevitably compose the world they are tasked with representing. This is because modeling requires abstraction, inclusion, and exclusion of data, (2) modeling sovereignty as a concept offers opportunities for states to innovate new forms of regulation, particularly with respect to the types of data fed into models and the conditions of users' interfacial interaction with models. As a result, modeling sovereignty can beget value-alignment between states, platforms, and corporations, (3) models are how large groups of actors, perhaps entire societies, are able to sense themselves and analyze themselves. Models are a condition of recursive governance, such as in the case of digital twins, (4) models are not always and simply visual, but are instead tools for platforms to concatenate and synthesize large amounts of live data into dynamic representational topologies. Historically speaking, models are to platforms what prices are to markets. Prices and models are both how complex sets of knowledge become intelligible to their respective organizational form. Models are predicated on significant increases in informational complexity due to big data. Thus, modeling sovereignty is both a question and a regulatory principle. As we enter the digital era, the digital economy provides an opportunity for China's manufacturing industry to achieve 'smart manufacturing' and provides important support for China to move from a 'big manufacturing country' to a 'strong manufacturing country'. This paper constructs an indicator system for the level of digital economy development in Chinese cities by determining the connotation of China's digital economy based on the characteristics of its digital economy development. Based on the application of entropy value method to measure the level of digital economy development of cities, we empirically investigate the impact of the level of digital economy development of cities on the innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry using mixed panel data of listed Chinese A-share manufacturing companies and cities from 2011 to 2019. The empirical study finds that the level of urban digital economy development is conducive to improving the overall innovation efficiency, innovation quality efficiency and innovation quantity efficiency of enterprises, and overall, the digital economy has a significant contribution to the innovation efficiency of manufacturing industry. There is regional, firm size and industry heterogeneity in the impact of urban digital economy development level on manufacturing innovation efficiency, and this heterogeneity is further manifested in the types of manufacturing innovation efficiency. Based on the panel data on 276 prefectural-level cities from 2011 to 2018, this paper uses longitudinal fixed effects models, panel threshold effects and instrumental variables to explore the relationship between digital economy development and human capital structure advancement. In addition, this paper examines how the development of the digital economy is related to human capital levels. The results show that digital economy development significantly boosts human capital structure advancement, as well as low-level and high-level human capital. However, the effect of digital economy development on midlevel human capital is not statistically significant. In terms of heterogeneity, we find that digital economy development significantly promotes human capital structure advancement in eastern and central-western regions of China, as well as in core and peripheral cities. Effects on the various levels of human capital show significant differences. Furthermore, digital economy development has a positive effect on human capital structure when industrial structure advancement is low. Past a certain threshold, however, the effect reverses. This paper suggests that each region should accelerate the development of digital infrastructure, rationally promote industrial structure advancement and boost the effectiveness of human resources to achieve high-quality economic development. Is digitalization conducive to promoting carbon reduction in cultivated land use while empowering high-quality socio-economic development and intelligent territorial spatial planning? Derived from China's provincial panel data from the period 2011 to 2019, in this paper, we employ a fixed-effect model to study the impact of the digital economy on carbon emissions from cultivated land use and apply an intermediary-effect model to estimate the impact that the structure of the digital economy has on carbon emissions from cultivated land use. The results indicate the following: (1) The expansion of the digital economy can significantly decrease the carbon emissions caused by cultivated land use. This conclusion is still valid after considering endogenous issues and conducting a series of robustness tests. (2) Green technical renovation has played a significant intermediary role in the effect the digital economy has on the amount of carbon emissions from cultivated land use. (3) Digital economy development has significantly promoted innovation in green technology by increasing the size of green invention patent applications and authorizations, thus effectively curbing carbon emissions from cultivated land use and achieving the carbon emission reduction effect of the digital economy. However, some suggestions are put forward, including speeding up the deep integration of digital technology and cultivated land use planning, strengthening the application of green technical renovation achievements in the agricultural field, and enhancing the government's function in the institutional guarantee of the growth of the digital economy. The global industrial chain and energy supply chain are being reconfigured at an accelerated pace, and the uncertainty of China's energy supply security is growing significantly. Empowering energy supply chains through the digital economy ( d i e c ) has a positive effect on accelerating the transformation of China's energy supply structure. This paper discusses the effect and mechanisms of the digital economy on energy supply chain efficiency ( e s c e ). Specifically, based on the panel data of 112 energy enterprises in China from 2011 to 2019, energy supply chain efficiency and digital economy at the enterprise level were evaluated through three-stage DEA and content analysis, respectively. A two-way fixed effects model and mediation effect mode were adopted to investigate the nexus of d i e c and e s c e . The results show that the digital economy improves energy supply chain efficiency, and the conclusion holds water even after a series of robustness tests and endogenous treatment. Meanwhile, its promotion effect is more significant among large enterprises, non-state enterprises and enterprises in high market-oriented regions. The main impact mechanisms are regional industrial agglomeration and technological innovation of enterprises. Based on the above conclusions, it is suggested to take advantage of the industrial aggregation effect and technological innovation effect of the digital economy to further improve the efficiency of the energy supply chain for the purpose of maintaining energy supply security. This paper discusses the effect of network infrastructure on environmental pollution reduction and the realization mechanism behind it. Based on the panel data of 285 cities in China from 2005 to 2019, this study regards the "Broadband China" pilot policy as a quasi-natural experiment to clarify the pollution emission reduction effect of network infrastructure construction through differences-in-differences method and other methods. The research results show the following: (1) The Broadband China pilot policy has reduced environmental pollution, that is, the construction of network infrastructure has the effect of environmental pollution reduction. The conclusion is still established after a series of robustness tests such as parallel trend test, placebo test, and instrumental variable method. Through the heterogeneity test, it is found that the pollution reduction effect of network infrastructure construction is more obvious in non-resource-based cities, first and second tier cities, and cities in the eastern region (2). The construction of network infrastructure plays a restraining role on local environmental pollution. Due to the insufficient level of regional linkage and the siphon effect of pilot cities, the spatial spillover characteristics of the pollution reduction effect are not obvious (3). The mechanism of action shows that green innovation is an important mediating effect mechanism for network infrastructure construction to reduce environmental pollution. Cities in regions with high degree of marketization and environmental regulation can strengthen the effect of network infrastructure construction on environmental pollution reduction. The research conclusions are conducive to accelerating the development of the digital economy represented by the construction of network infrastructure and provide a useful reference for promoting the level of environmental pollution reduction and achieving high-quality development. The traditional manufacturing industry is China's second-largest source of carbon emissions, and the successful completion of dual carbon target depend on the traditional manufacturing industry's ability to reduce emissions. This paper constructs the evaluation index system to analyze the driving factors and green coupling level of the digital economy enabling the green development of traditional manufacturing industry from three aspects: industry digitalization capacity, socio-economic benefits capacity and ecological resources carrying capacity based on the theory of social shaping of technology. From the perspective of regional economic development, this paper constructs the spatial Durbin model and threshold regression model to analyze the mediation effect and spatial spillover mechanism of the digital economy empowering the green development of traditional manufacturing industry. Based on the panel data of 30 provinces in China from 2012 to 2020, the empirical analysis show that digital economy has the positive impact on the green development of traditional manufacturing industry through the digital innovation, industrial upgrading and human capital. At same time, the digital economy has a positive spatial autocorrelation pattern of the green development of traditional manufacturing industries with "high in the eastern and low in the western of China" from the global Moran index. Through the policy test of carbon-trading pilot programs by the difference-in-differences model, the digital economy has a non-linear impact on the intensive production of traditional manufacturing industry, which green finance activate the new impetus of market and the data element resources enhance industrial coordination development. As digital economy flourishes, there have been fundamental changes in the patterns of economic development, social structure, and ecological environment, which are the key elements of inclusive green growth (IGG). However, whether digital economy can effectively contribute to IGG requires further investigation. This paper evaluates the direct and spatial spillover effect of digital economy on IGG of 280 cities in China during 2011–2019 using Spatial Durbin Model (SDM). It further explores how government environmental regulation (GER) moderates this facilitating effect. The empirical results show that digital economy significantly reinforces IGG while GER weakens the benefits of digital economy to IGG. There is a significant spatial spillover effect of digital economy on IGG in neighboring regions; specifically, IGG in peripheral cities is more significantly encouraged by digital economy than in central cities. In addition, digital development demonstrates the most significant impact on IGG in central regions of China, followed by the eastern regions, with western regions lagging behind. This paper contributes theoretically and empirically to promote digital economy selectively for IGG in different regions and provides a guideline for policymakers to achieve IGG through proper GER. Between 2017 and 2018, US President Donald Trump introduced a Section 301 investigation into China’s trade practices following allegations of unfair trade practices against China (Bown & Kolb, 2018). The battlelines first emerged when China surpassed the US in 2009 to become Africa’s largest trading partner, having signed bilateral trade agreements with over 40 countries in the African continent. By the second decade of the 2000s, the rise of the digital economy, estimated to grow at between 15% and 25% annually in emerging countries (WEF, 2017), drew Africa into the crosshairs of the US-China trade war. Between 2018 and 2023, over 36 Chinese high-tech companies were blacklisted by the US, citing concerns over national security (Sevastopulo et al., 2022). Against this background, the article places the US-China standoff over digital supremacy in Africa in a media context, bringing novel dimensions into consideration that illuminate a media war focused on competing hegemonic agendas. The article springboards off Bastiansen et al. (2019, pp. 5-8) to argue that the trade war between the two countries presents an ideal setting to study partisan and elite perspectives reflected in news reporting on the international conflict. By expanding the scope of analysis to the media as a mode of information, the article’s main departure point is that the trade war between the two countries that began in 2009, when China surpassed the US to become Africa’s largest trading partner, is being interlocuted through the agency of soft power, with media outlets playing a pivotal role in shaping public biases. A central theme emerging from the research is that media publications have clear biases. Generally, the US news media outlets analysed are heavily critical of the Chinese government and its cutting-edge technologies in Africa. In contrast, the popular Chinese media outlets analysed adopt a defensive stance in their responses to the US. Although recognised as useful, ambidextrous innovation also presents unique managerial challenges particularly when exploration and exploitation are pursued simultaneously. The paper aims to explore the forming mechanisms of firm's ambidextrous innovation capabilities using the main approaches in strategic management. The authors theoretically examine the direct effects of the digital economy (DE) on ambidextrous innovation capabilities and the mediating effect of knowledge acquisition (KA) and use the stepwise regression method to conduct an empirical analysis of 178 high-tech companies listed in China's A-share market from 2013 to 2019. The empirical results show that DE has significantly promoted the ambidextrous innovation capabilities of firms, and also has a significant positive impact on the balance effect between exploratory innovation and exploitative innovation; DE has a significant positive impact on both external knowledge acquisition (EKA) and internal knowledge creation; KA has a significantly positive effect on exploratory innovation, exploitative innovation and their balance effect, and the effect of KA on exploratory innovation is greater than that on exploitative innovation. Furthermore, KA plays a significantly mediating role in the relationship between DE and exploratory innovation/exploitative innovation. The findings of our study provide insights for knowledge management research and have important guiding significance for promoting ambidextrous innovation capabilities of firms in DE. The coupling coordination of digital economy and green high-quality development of industries is an important way for sustainable and high-quality economic development. This paper constructs an evaluation index system for the digital economy and industrial green high-quality development, and conducts empirical analysis using the coupling coordination model, the spatial autocorrelation model, and the Tobit model. The data from provinces and cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt spanning from 2008 to 2021 has been analyzed. Results show that both subsystems exhibit a good and rising coupling coordination, and the regional coupling coordination demonstrates a trend of higher values in the east and lower in the west. Moreover, there is interaction between provinces and cities, albeit with a weakening correlation after 2011. Additionally, spatial clustering is evident between regions with high and low coupling coordination. The coupling coordination degree of each region is impacted by important factors, such as economic development level, financial level, opening up, fiscal expenditure, and urbanization. Therefore, the study recommends policies aimed at boosting the coupling coordination level in the Yangtze River Economic Belt. Key policy proposals contain promoting the integration and innovation of digital technology and green low-carbon technology, strengthening regional cooperation through the transfer of industries, and adopting differentiated development strategies tailored to regional advantages and the varied impact.
