The present study aimed to use CBCT to compare the influence of White and Black ethnicity on gingival and bone thickness. A total of 84 individuals of both genders, aged between 18 and 59 years old, were divided into Black (BG; n = 42) and White (WG; n = 42) groups and were analyzed from June 2020 to April 2021. The gingival thickness (GT) and buccal bone plate thickness (BBPT) were measured using CBCT in all maxillary anterior teeth. Mann-Whitney, t test, chi-square, Pearson correlation, and Spearman correlation were used for comparisons and correlations with a 5% significance level. Black individuals had mean GT (1.45 ± 0.29 mm) and BBPT (1.07 ± 0.21 mm) significantly thicker (gingival: P < .0001; bone: P = .0002) than White individuals (1.17 ± 0.28 mm and 0.91 ± 0.17 mm, respectively). The variables presented greater values for men. A positive correlation between the BBPT and GT was found in two teeth in the WG (left and right central incisors) and one tooth in the BG (left canine). Moreover, a correlation between BBPT and GT immediately below the alveolar bone crest (0 mm) was found in four teeth in the WG (left and right lateral and central incisors) and the BG (left and right canine, left lateral and central incisors). Purpose: To investigate the validity of the Physical Activity Questionnaire for Older Children (PAQ-C) to assess the moderate- to vigorous-intensity physical activity (MVPA) level of children and adolescents diagnosed with HIV and propose cut-points, with accelerometer measures as the reference method. Method: Children and adolescents, aged 8–14 years (mean age = 12.21 y, SD = 2.09), diagnosed with HIV by vertical transmission, participated in the study. MVPA was investigated through the PAQ-C and triaxial accelerometer (ActiGraph GT3X+). Receiver operating characteristic curve and sensitivity and specificity values were used to identify a cut-point for PAQ-C to distinguish participants meeting MVPA guidelines. Results: Fifty-six children and adolescents participated in the study. Among those, 16 met MVPA guidelines. The PAQ-C score was significantly related to accelerometry-derived MVPA (ρ =.506, P <.001). The PAQ-C score cut-point of 2.151 (sensitivity = 0.625, specificity = 0.875) was able to discriminate between those who met MVPA guidelines and those that did not (area under the curve = 0.751, 95% confidence interval, 0.616–0.886). We aimed to analyze the effects of exclusive breastfeeding duration on the occurrence and course of pneumonia in infants aged up to 6 months. Prospective case-control study. This study was conducted from August 2020 to August 2022 at a maternity and child health hospital in China. A total of 218 infants up to 6 months of age with pneumonia were included in the analyses. Health data were obtained using a hospitalization information system or an interview-based questionnaire. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to analyze the data. The incidence of pneumonia, hospitalization duration, and costs to participants were significantly affected by the duration of exclusive breastfeeding (p < 0.01). The incidence of pneumonia among participants with different exclusive breastfeeding durations also differed significantly (p < 0.01). The shorter the duration of exclusive breastfeeding, the higher the incidence of pneumonia among infants. We found that the longer the exclusive breastfeeding duration in infants up to 6 months of age, the lower the recurrence of pneumonia, the shorter the hospital stay, and the lower the hospital costs. The rate of exclusive breastfeeding for infants up to 6 months of age should be increased as much as possible to reduce the occurrence of pneumonia and hospital costs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of the study was to determine the effect of moderately strenuous aerobic exercise training on heart rate variability (HRV) and heart rate turbulence (HRT) in patients with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Methods: Patients were randomized to a 24-week home-based aerobic exercise (EX) training program (n = 84) or to usual care (UC) (n = 76). All subjects underwent 24-h Holter monitoring at baseline, 8 and 24 weeks. Generalized estimating equations were used to test the effects of exercise on HRV and HRT outcomes. Results: The study group was comprised of n = 160 patients (124 M, 36 F, age 54.9 ± 12.2 years) with an ICD for primary (43%) or secondary prevention (57%). Compared to UC, EX was associated with a significant improvement in parasympathetic HRV for root mean square of successive differences (rMSSD; p =.05) at 8 weeks and global HRV for standard deviation of all normal (N-N) intervals (SDNN; p =.05) and standard deviation of 5-min averages N-N intervals (SDANN; p =.03) at 24 weeks. When stratified by adherence, those who were ≥80% adherent (minutes/week) had significant improvements in parasympathetic HRV (rMSSD, pNN50) and global HRV (SDNN, SDANN) at 8 weeks, and a further significant improvement in global HRV (SDNN, SDANN, SDNN index) at 24 weeks. Neither HRT nor ventricular ectopy changed with exercise training. Conclusion: Moderately strenuous aerobic exercise improved parasympathetic and global HRV indices following an ICD, with greater adherence associated with greater improvements. Migration-related risk factors may impact the association between coping strategies, resilience, and identity development, one of the fundamental developmental tasks in adolescence. We examined the relationship between resilience and coping strategies in immigrant and non-immigrant adolescents' identity development. On a sample of Turkish adolescents (n = 399, 50.9% girls), we conducted six hierarchical regression models to predict identity dimensions from resilience and coping strategies. For both immigrants and non-immigrants, seeking social support predicted a more mature and successful identity while avoidance predicted less reconsideration of commitment. For non-immigrants, seeking social support and avoidance was associated with in-depth exploration whereas for immigrants, only seeking social support was linked to in-depth exploration. Objective: The main objective of this study was to investigate the effect of a self-regulated dual task on muscle endurance within a single rehabilitation session in patients recovering from an elbow fracture. Design: This is a cross-sectional study of individuals recovering from elbow fractures (N = 20). Muscle endurance was tested using elastic bands at Borg’s CR10 intensity 3—during four conditions: singletask and dual-task for elbow flexion and extension. Results: The cognitive condition significantly influenced muscle endurance ( P < 0.001), while the type of elbow exercise (flexion or extension) did not show significant differences ( P = 0.592). The perceived difficulty of the tasks showed a significant interaction effect ( P = 0.032). The dual-task condition showed an average increase of about 15 repetitions. A moderate negative correlation was found between the differences in repetitions and the perceived difficulty of the flexion exercise (r = 0.677, P = 0.001). Conclusions: Dual-task with self-regulation enhances muscle endurance among patients recovering from an elbow fracture. However, the improvements seem to depend on the perceived difficulty of the cognitive task. The Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders: Parent Version (SCARED-P) was originally developed for use in middle childhood and adolescence. The present study examined the psychometric properties and validity of the SCARED-P in an early childhood sample (predominantly aged 4–7 years). The 41-item version of the SCARED-P was administered to the parents of 233 children (mean age = 6.31 years, SD = 1.08; females = 34.3%). Confirmatory factor analysis provided mixed support for the original five-factor model of the SCARED-P. The SCARED-P demonstrated good to excellent internal consistency (total α =.94, subscale α =.68–.89), and good construct validity with the Child Behavior Checklist, Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire, and the Developmental and Well-being Assessment. These findings indicate overall initial support for the SCARED-P's utility as a measure of anxiety in early childhood, but further psychometric and validation studies are needed in larger community-based samples of young children. An estimated 7.7 million Venezuelans have fled a severe humanitarian crisis in their country, most (70%) to other middle-income host countries in the same Andean region. Migration-related exposures during periconception and other critical gestational periods can adversely impact maternal-perinatal outcomes. Emerging evidence suggests that Venezuelan refugee and migrant women (VRMW) who migrate to Andean host countries are at-risk for delivering preterm and low birthweight infants and for Cesarean-sections. However, relatively few studies have examined obstetrical complications that could contribute to these or other short- and longer-term health outcomes of VRMW and/or their offspring. Our exploratory study analyzed four recent years of national hospital discharge data (2018–2021) from Ecuador to compare the primary discharge diagnoses of VRMW (n = 29,005) and Ecuadorian nationals (n = 1,136,796) for ICD-10 O code obstetrical complications related to or aggravated by pregnancy, childbirth, or the puerperium. Our findings indicated that VRMW were hospitalized for 0.5 days longer than Ecuadorian reference group women and they had higher adjusted odds (aOR) for a primary discharge diagnosis for obstetrical complications including preeclampsia (aOR:1.62, 95% CI:1.55,1.69), preterm labor (aOR:1.20, 95% CI:1.11,1.31), premature rupture of membranes (aOR: 1.72, 95% CI:1.63,1.83), oligohydraminos (aOR:1.24, 95% CI:1.12,1.36), obstructed labor (aOR: 1.39, 95% CI:1.31,1.47), perineal lacerations/other obstetric trauma (aOR:1.76, 95% CI:1.63, 1.91), STIs (aOR:2.59, 95% CI:1.29,2.92), anemia (aOR:1.33, 95% CI:1.24,1.42), and ectopic pregnancy (aOR:1.16 95% CI:1.04,1.28). They had similar aOR for diagnosed gestational diabetes and spontaneous abortion (SAB) compared to the reference group but a reduced aOR for genitourinary infections (aOR:0.79, 95% CI:0.74,0.84) and early pregnancy hemorrhage not ending in SAB (aOR:0.43, 95% CI:0.36,0.51). Our findings underscore the vulnerability of VRMW for a number of potentially serious obstetrical complications with the potential to adversely impact the short- and longer-term health of mothers and their offspring. Future studies should collect more detailed information on the migration status, experiences, and exposures of MRMW that influence their risk for obstetrical complications. These are needed to expand our findings to better understand why they have excess risk for these and to inform social and public health policies, programs and targeted interventions aimed at reducing the risk of this vulnerable refugee and migrant group. Background: Gender differences in psychosis are a topic that has been studied considering different aspects. Although some available evidence would point to a possible better prognosis in women, this claim is far from conclusively established. Methods: We propose an analysis of gender differences in the risk of readmission to an acute hospitalization unit, an indicator related to prognosis. Objectives: To evaluate the individual and community factors that contribute to dental utilization among young children on Medicaid utilizing the Anderson Model and the Socio‐Ecological Framework. Methods: This observational cross‐sectional study was conducted using baseline data (socio‐demographics, clinical dental need) from a cluster‐randomized hybrid effectiveness‐implementation trial among 1021 child–parent dyads recruited from primary care practices across northeast Ohio. The baseline data were then linked to dental Medicaid claims data (categorized as any dental visit, volume, and type in the past 12 months) and ICD‐10 codes from the child's EHR data (individual‐level) together with Dental Health Provider Shortage Area (HPSA) status and Area Deprivation Index (ADI) which were obtained at the neighbourhood‐level using home address of each dyad (community‐level). Multivariable analyses using generalized estimating equations (GEE) accounted for clustering by practice, and models included individual‐level alone, and individual + community‐level factors to evaluate their effects on dental utilization. Results: Medicaid claims data indicated that among the 1021 children (mean age: 4.3 ± 1.1 years; 54.4% males; 43.8% Black, Non‐Hispanic), a majority of children were seeing the dentist at least once a year by the age of 4 (56.1%). The mean ADI of their neighbourhoods was 109.22 (20.2) and 27.5% lived in a HPSA area. The GEE analyses revealed that individual factors such as older children, parents being married, and continuous Medicaid enrollment were associated with significantly higher dental utilization. Among community factors, being in a HPSA had an OR = 1.53 (CI: 1.03, 2.27) associated with higher dental utilization. Conclusions: Being in a HPSA was associated with higher dental utilization possibly due to dentists or safety net dental clinics in these areas accepting Medicaid‐eligible children. Objective: The aims of this study were to determine the amount of smoking, the presence of back pain and the severity of pain, and to examine whether there was a relationship between smoking and back pain. Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 100 randomly selected students who were educated at university and had back pain. In individuals, a 22-question questionnaire and 21-question Beck Depression Scale were used, questioning parameters such as sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity levels, previous health problems, smoking status, as well as pain assessment tests. The results were analyzed by appropriate statistical methods. Results: Morning back pain was found to be higher in smokers compared to nonsmokers. (p <.05) BECK Depression Scale scores of smokers were found to be significantly different compared to nonsmokers (p =.00). In addition, it was observed that smokers needed more psychological medical support than nonsmokers (p =.00). Conclusions: This study revealed that although some significant results were found between smoking and some factors that cause back pain, there was no significant difference between smokers and nonsmokers. Objective: Inflamatory processes play an important role in the etiology of psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate inflammatory complete blood count (CBC) parameters in substance use disorder (SUD). Methods: The study included 90 patients with SUD and 90 healthy controls (HC). The Student t-test was used to compare CBC parameters between the groups. The Kruskal – Wallis test was used to compare the data on the basis of substance types. Results: Leukocyte, lymphocyte, and monocyte levels were higher in SUD group than HC. Leukocyte and neutrophil levels of patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) were higher than HC. Platelet levels and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and systemic immune inflammation index values were higher in patients with OUD than in patients with non-opioid substance use disorder (nOUD). Moreover, lymphocyte and monocyte levels were higher in patients with nOUD than in HC. Monocyte levels were increased in patients with cannabinoid use disorder compared to HC. Conclusion: The results suggested that inflammatory CBC parameters play an important role in the etiology of SUD according to type of substance. Background: During adolescence, individuals experience rapid changes in physical, cognitive, emotional, behavioral, and social aspects of their life. Due to certain risks which arise during the developmental period of adolescence, substance use and addiction are encountered as a public health problem. Studies on biochemical parameters and puberty are limited. In this study, adolescents with substance use disorder were compared to healthy individuals in terms of sociodemographic characteristics and serum irisin and caspase-9 levels. Methods: The study group consisted of 32 adolescents with substance use disorder and the control group was comprised of 29 healthy adolescents. The sociodemographic characteristics and serum irisin and caspase-9 levels of the groups were compared. Results: The study group performed lower than the control group in terms of duration of education and continuing education. Serum caspase-9 levels were found to be significantly higher in the study group compared to the control group. There was no difference in irisin levels of the groups. Conclusions: It was determined that substance use negatively affects educational aspects and may also lead to certain destructive biological effects in adolescents. Domestic violence against women increased during COVID-19 lockdowns. This inaugural study examined the content of Australian government online portals, for women seeking support and help for domestic violence, during the 2021 COVID-19 pandemic. This mixed methods study incorporated four phases: a search; measurement of portal quality standard using DISCERN; enumeration of portal items; and a qualitative exploration of portal text. Australian governments must continue to work alongside domestic violence services as we found some portals were better than others. Background and objective: Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) has proven highly effective in improving quality of life for patients with severe knee conditions. Despite advancements, surgical complications such as periprosthetic joint infections (PJIs) pose risks. The potential predictive value of pre- and post-operative inflammatory markers like neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), D-dimer, and albumin levels on surgical outcomes is garnering attention. There is a growing interest in leveraging these markers to enhance patient selection and outcome prediction in the context of TKA.Focusing on the natural course of these markers, and the incidence of PJIs and to refine perioperative care strategies, improve patient outcomes, and identify high-risk patients for targeted intervention. Methods: The study included 94 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA) between 2019 and 2023. Blood tests were conducted before surgery and at 1, 3, 7, and 15 days after surgery to assess various parameters including white blood cell count, neutrophils, lymphocytes, platelets, hemoglobin, C-reactive protein, D-dimers, total protein, albumin, and total cholesterol values and ratios. Results: Following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), key observations in blood markers included a sharp rise in white blood cell (WBC) counts from 5.81 to 10.22 (*10^9/L) on the first day post-surgery, with levels returning close to preoperative values by day-15. Neutrophil counts similarly increased from 3.46 to 8.50 (*10^9/L) on day-1, decreasing to 4.01 by day-15. Hemoglobin levels significantly decreased from 115.70 g/L to 90.62 by day-3 before improving to 100.30 by day-15. C-reactive protein (CRP) levels also saw a significant rise from 6.15 mg/L to a peak of 47.07 on day-3, then reducing to 10.55 by day-15, indicating a response to inflammation. Conclusion: Following total knee arthroplasty (TKA), a significant initial postoperative increase in white blood cell count, neutrophils, and C-reactive protein levels, indicative of an acute inflammatory response, before returning towards baseline values by day 15. Hemoglobin levels displayed a notable dip post-surgery, gradually improving by the study's end. These patterns emphasize the dynamic nature of inflammatory and hematological responses after TKA, highlighting their potential role in predicting surgical outcomes and guiding postoperative care. Background: Shear Wave Elastography (SWE) offers quantitative insights into the hardness and elasticity characteristics of tissues. The objective of this study is to investigate the correlation between SWE of the menisci and MRI-assessed degenerative changes in the menisci, with the aim of providing novel reference source for improving non-invasive evaluation of meniscal degenerative alterations. Methods: The participants in this study were selected from patients who underwent knee joint MRI scans at our hospital from February 2023 to February 2024. The anterior horns of both the medial and lateral menisci were evaluated using SWE technique. The differences in elastic values of meniscus among different MRI grades were compared. The correlation between elastic values and MRI grades, as well as various parameters, was analyzed. Using MRI Grade 3 as the gold standard, the optimal cutoff value for meniscal tear was determined. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was employed to evaluate the reliability of repeated measurements performed by the same observer. Results: A total of 104 female participants were enrolled in this study, with 152 lateral menisci (LM) and 144 medial menisci (MM) assessed. For the male group, 83 individuals were included, with 147 LM and 145 MM evaluated. The results demonstrated statistically significant differences in the elasticity values of the menisci at the same anatomical sites across different MRI grades (P < 0.001). Within the same grade, the MM had higher elasticity values than the LM, showing a statistically significant difference (P < 0.001). The elasticity values of the menisci were higher in males compared to females. There were statistically significant positive correlations between the elasticity values of the menisci and age, BMI, and MRI grade. The ICC for repeated measurements within the observer demonstrated good reliability (> 0.79). Conclusions: The meniscal elasticity values measured by SWE exhibit a significant positive correlation with the grades of degeneration assessed by MRI. Background: Various virtual education methods, in addition to encouraging student-centered learning, positively impact the development of personal capabilities and improvement of students' personality growth, especially when e-learning is combined with traditional education. Aim: The present study is a semi-experimental study that Impact of Blended Teaching on Academic Achievement and Well-being in Operating Room Students. Methods: This semi-experimental study, conducted over one academic semester, involved pre-test and post-test assessments with 44 operating room students in two university centers. Participants were selected through a census method and assigned to control and intervention groups. Data collection tools included the Hermance's Academic Achievement and Hein's Academic Well-being questionnaires. Results: The results of this study indicated a statistically significant difference in the level of well-being before and after the intervention, demonstrating a significant improvement in well-being in the Blended Teaching group after the intervention (P < 0.01). Independent t-tests showed no statistically significant difference in the mean score of academic achievement between the two groups after the intervention. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, blended teaching led to an increase in academic well-being in undergraduate students. To improve the level of academic well-being of students, educational policy makers should consider ways to educate students about new educational approaches. Prioritizing strategies in using educational methods may enhance academic well-being and leading to positive educational outcomes and fostering qualified and competent care in the nursing profession. Teaching clinical skills needs repetition, daily practice and continuous use to be internalized and become a habit. It may be that due to the short period of time and the absence of the first-semester students in clinical courses and fields, the level of academic achievement of the students did not show any particular change. Background: Klotho plays a pivotal role in human aging. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is composed of multiple conditions that are also risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. We try to discuss gender-specific differences in Klotho and the associations between Klotho and MetS components. Materials and methods: The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database from cycle 2015–2016 was analyzed. MetS was defined according to the 2005 updated criteria by the American Heart Association and National Heart Lung and Blood Institute. Gender-specific differences in serum Klotho, and associations between Klotho level and MetS components were examined. Results: A total of 2475 participants (40–79 years old) with comprehensive data were included (52% women). In general, lower Klotho was associated with advanced age, male sex, tobacco use, elevated triglycerides, renal insufficiency, inflammation, low estradiol, and low sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG). The correlation between MetS and Klotho was more obvious in women, mainly in waist circumference and triglyceride. There were no gender-specific differences in the associations between Klotho and renal dysfunction, but multivariate linear regression analysis showed gender differences in other factors associated with Klotho. Estradiol, SHBG, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) were associated with Klotho levels independent of age and renal function in men, whereas in women, Klotho was independently associated with triglycerides and white blood cell count. Conclusion: Klotho levels had gender disparities regardless of age, renal function, and sex hormones. In the current cohort, triglycerides were the major component of MetS that was independently associated with serum Klotho levels, and the association was particularly seen in women. Objective. The number of cancer survivors is increasing, and the high prevalence of frailty not only reduces quality of life but also affects the treatment of cancer patients. This study aimed to identify the prevalence and risk factors of frailty in cancer patients and to construct a nomogram to predict the probability of frailty. Methods. Nine hundred fifty‐eight cancer patients were included in this retrospective study, randomly divided into a development set (n = 680) and a validation set (n = 278). Frailty was assessed using the Tilburg frailty indicator (TFI). Social support, medical coping styles, and psychological distress were assessed by the Social Support Self‐Rating Scale (SSRS), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), and distress thermometer (DT), respectively. Results. The prevalence of frailty in cancer patients was 45.93%. Cancer patients who exercised regularly, ate a balanced diet, and actively coped with diseases were less likely to become frail. The risk factors for frailty identified by a multivariate analysis were parenteral nutrition, advanced TNM staging, vegetarian diet, unemployment, psychological distress ≥4, low physical activity, and negative coping styles. These risk factors were used to construct a nomogram, and the C‐index, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA) were used to assess the performance of the nomogram. The C‐index was 0.762, and the calibration curve showed satisfactory coherence. The net benefit of the nomogram was better between threshold probabilities of 17%–96% in DCA. Conclusion. Special focus needs to be placed on frail cancer patients due to their high prevalence and severe outcomes. Background: Individuals living with HIV are at increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. This heightened vulnerability is influenced by various factors, including the direct impact of HIV infection, the side effects of HIV medications, and a higher presence of traditional cardiovascular risk factors. Detecting and managing cardiovascular diseases early in HIV-infected individuals is crucial for their overall health and well-being. Electrocardiography, a simple and non-invasive test, can provide valuable information in this regard. However, there is currently no published data on the prevalence of electrocardiographic abnormalities and the associated factors among HIV-infected adults in Ethiopia. Objectives: This study was aimed at assessing the prevalence of ECG abnormalities and associated factors among HIV-infected adults on antiretroviral therapy. Methodology: A hospital-based comparative cross-sectional study was conducted at Mettu Karl Specialized Hospital (MKSH), southwest Ethiopia, among 96 HIV-infected patients and 96 HIV-negative control groups. A systematic random sampling technique was used to select HIV-infected respondents, and HIV-negative respondents were purposively recruited from caregivers. A face-to-face interview with a semi-structured and pretested questionnaire was conducted to collect the socio-demographic and behavioral characteristics of the study participants. Electrocardiography was done for all study participants using a 12-lead electrocardiograph, interpreted by a cardiologist, and classified according to the Minnesota Code classification system. The data were entered into Epi-Data version 4.6 and exported to SPSS version 25 for analysis. Finally, descriptive statistics, chi-square, independent t-test, bivariable, and multivariable logistic regression analyses were done at a 5% significance level. Results: The study found that 49% of HIV-infected and 19.8% of HIV-negative participants had at least one ECG abnormality. The proportion of coded ST-segment abnormalities, T-wave abnormalities, longer QT interval, and sinus tachycardia was significantly higher in HIV-infected respondents than in HIV-negatives. Being a smoker [AOR = 3.7, 95%CI: 1.03-13.6], being on Protease inhibitors [AOR = 3.6, 95%CI: 1.02-13.1] and having CD4 less than 350 cells/mm3 [AOR = 3.2, 95%CI: 1.22-8.49] were significantly associated with ECG abnormalities among HIV-infected respondents. Conclusion: Compared to HIV-negative participants, HIV-infected patients had a significantly higher prevalence of ECG abnormalities. Background: The use of Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in chronic liver disease (CLD) patients in Germany is unknown. This study investigated the frequency of CAM use and associated sociodemographic, clinical and personality factors in CLD patients in Germany. Methods: This is a cross-sectional multicenter study of CLD patients attending liver outpatient clinics of university hospitals in Halle(-Saale) and Homburg between 2015 and 2017. Dedicated questionnaires recorded CAM use, sociodemographic and personality factors (evaluated with the "Big five" model, "Hospital Anxiety and Depression"-, "Multidimensional Health Locus of Control"- score). Uni- and multivariate analyses assessed factors associated to CAM use. Results: Overall 378 patients were recruited, 92 (24.3%) reported to CAM use. On univariate analysis, female CAM users were older (p = 0.001) and more physically active (p = 0.002), male CAM users more often used homeopathy (p = 0.000), actively promoted their health (p = 0.010) or had UDC in their medication (p = 0.004). Logistic regression analysis adjusted for personality factors showed significant association of age, physical exercise (females) and satisfaction with alternative medicine (females, males) to CAM use. Conclusions: CAM use is prevalent among CLD patients in Germany and is significantly associated to satisfaction with alternative medicine (females, males), physical exercise and older age (females). Background: Cochlear implants made a great impact in the management of severe-to-profound hearing loss in both children and adults. Its greatest impact is in helping children born with a profound hearing loss and implanted early to attend mainstream education and using spoken language to communicate. However, the final outcome in pediatric implantation is not predictable as there are large number of factors which will affect the outcome of cochlear implantation. Studying these determinants increases the ability of clinicians to offer educated preoperative prognosis and might potentially allow for manipulation of variables in an attempt to achieve the best possible outcome. Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the preoperative factors affecting the audiological, speech, and language outcomes achieved by the recipients of cochlear implants. Methodology: A total of 39 children with severe-to-profound sensory neural hearing loss were implanted with cochlear implants. Children had received their implants before age of 5 years. Tests of receptive, expressive language quotient, aided cortical auditory-evoked potential using speech stimulus, aided free field audiometry, and aided speech reception thresholds were administered. Characteristics of the child and the family (age before implant and duration of implant use, cause of hearing loss, preimplant use of hearing aids and language therapy, and sociodemographic characteristics of their families) were the preoperative variables. These variables were considered predictors of audiological and language outcomes achieved by children and were determined using statistical analysis by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: Age of the studied children at time of cochlear implantation was statistically significant predictor for CI outcome as regard receptive language quotient and also for N1 latency. Hearing age of the studied children was a statistically significant predictor for CI outcome as regards P1 latency. Conclusion: Based on our findings, two most important factors affecting outcome of cochlear implantation were the age at implantation and the hearing age. Background: Community violence exposure (CVE) in adolescence is associated with poorer mental health although the situational factors that may impact on this relationship remain relatively unexplored. The present study aimed to investigate if the degree of perceived stress during CVE has an effect on future posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in youth, and if this association differs between females and males. Methods: Data were analyzed from 760 U.S. adolescents (mean age = 14.00 years), who participated in two surveys, one year apart. Information about CVE (witnessing violence and violence victimization) and the stress severity associated with it was collected in the first survey, whereas data on PTSD symptoms were obtained in the second survey. Generalized Linear Models were used to examine the associations that were also adjusted for ethnicity, age and socioeconomic status. Results: The results showed a longitudinal association between CVE-related stress and future PTSD symptoms, with students who had higher levels of perceived stress during CVE (witnessing or victimization) reporting higher PTSD symptom levels subsequently. There was no interaction between sex and CVE-related stress and PTSD symptoms, although females reported more PTSD symptoms. Conclusions: The severity of the perceived stress associated with CVE should be regarded as a potentially important prognostic factor for identifying those who might develop PTSD symptoms after CVE and this may facilitate early intervention and treatment for those exposed to community violence. Background: Frozen shoulder is an incapacitating disease that causes pain and limitation in the shoulder joint functional capacity. This work aimed to assess the efficacy of ultrasound-guided combined intra-articular corticosteroids (CS) injection and suprascapular nerve block (SSNB) in pain control in patients with frozen shoulders. Results: Our prospective study included 40 patients, equally divided into two groups: group A; managed with combined ultrasound (US) guided intra-articular corticosteroids injection (IACSI) and SSNB, and group B patients managed with US-guided SSNB. The visual analog scale score statistically significantly improved after both injections. This success was maintained and showed mild improvement at 8-week intervals (with increased patient capability to do physiotherapy after pain control). Similarly, improvement in the functional capacity of the shoulder joint was identified and assessed by the Oxford shoulder score (OSS) in both groups. Mean OSS was statistically significantly higher at 4-week intervals than before the nerve block for groups A and B. At 8 weeks interval, this favorable result was sustained (p <.001). Conclusions: US-guided SSNB is an effective, radiation-free method to alleviate frozen shoulder-related pains. Background: The mandibular retromolar space (RMS) has not been extensively studied in relation to various sagittal skeletal classes and patterns of third-molar eruption. The objective of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the mandibular RMS among normodivergent subjects with different skeletal classes and patterns of mandibular third-molar eruption, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Method: A total of 105 normodivergent patients (20–40 years) were included in this study. Participants were categorized into Class I, II and III groups based on ANB and further impacted and erupted groups based on the eruption patterns of the mandibular third molars. Measurements of the mandibular RMS were taken at four planes parallel to the occlusal plane, along the cusp line. Comparative analyses were conducted among the three sagittal groups and between the impacted and erupted groups. Results: The Class II group exhibited a statistically smaller RMS (P < 0.05). RMS was found to be larger in third-molar erupted group (P < 0.05). The rates of root contact and third-molar impaction was significantly higher in Class II group. (P < 0.05) Conclusions: The null hypothesis was rejected. Patients with Skeletal Class II tend to have a smaller mandibular RMS and a higher prevalence of root contact and third-molar impaction. Background: Limbic structures have recently garnered increased attention in Parkinson's disease (PD) research. This study aims to explore changes at the whole-brain level in the structural network, specifically the white matter fibres connecting the thalamus and limbic system, and their correlation with the clinical characteristics of patients with PD. Methods: Between December 2020 and November 2021, we prospectively enrolled 42 patients with PD and healthy controls at the movement disorder centre. All participants underwent diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), 3D T1- weighted imaging (3D-T1WI), and routine brain magnetic resonance imaging on a 3.0 T MR scanner. We employed the tract-based spatial statistical (TBSS) analytic approach, examined structural network properties, and conducted probabilistic fibre tractography to identify alterations in white matter pathways and the topological organisation associated with PD. Results: In patients with PD, significant changes were observed in the fibrous tracts of the prefrontal lobe, corpus callosum, and thalamus. Notably, the fibrous tracts in the prefrontal lobe and corpus callosum showed a moderate negative correlation with the Freezing of Gait Questionnaire (FOG-Q) scores (r = -0.423, p = 0.011). The hippocampus and orbitofrontal gyrus exhibited more fibre bundle parameter changes than other limbic structures. The mean streamline length between the thalamus and the orbitofrontal gyrus demonstrated a moderate negative correlation with Movement Disorder Society Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) III (r = -0.435, p = 0.006). Topological parameters, including characteristic path length (Lp), global efficiency (Eg), normalised shortest path length (λ) and nodal local efficiency (Nle), correlated moderately with the MDS-UPDRS, HAMA, MoCA, PDQ-39, and FOG-Q, respectively. Conclusion: DTI is a valuable tool for detecting changes in water molecule dispersion and the topological structure of the brain in patients with PD. Background: Primary health-care workers (PHWs) managed increased workloads and pressure during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study conducted a national survey examining burnout among PHWs at the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, and identifies related factors. By doing so, it addresses the gap in understanding the burnout situation among PHWs at a national level, taking into account urban-rural disparities. Methods: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional survey of PHWs in China from May to October 2022, covering 31 provinces. The MBI-HSS was used to measure overall burnout and emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and reduced personal accomplishment (PA). We used multivariable logistic regression to identify risk factors, and subgroup analyses to identify differences between rural and urban areas. Results: 3769 PHWs from 44 primary health-care institutions completed the survey. Overall, 16.6% reported overall burnout, and the prevalence of EE, DP, and reduced PA was 29.7%, 28.0%, and 62.9%, respectively. The prevalence of overall burnout (17.6% vs. 13.7%, P = 0.004) and EE (31.5% vs. 24.8%, P < 0.001) was higher in urban than rural areas (AOR = 1.285; 95%CI, 1.021–1.617). Job satisfaction was a protective factor against burnout in both settings. The protective factors of overall burnout, EE and DP vary between urban and rural areas. Conclusions: The Mental Health Status Questionnaire-Short Form (MSQ-SF) score functioned as a protective factor against burnout across both rural and urban locales, highlighting the intrinsic link between job satisfaction and burnout. Other influencing factors differed between urban and rural areas, so interventions should be tailored to local conditions. Rural married PHWs experienced the lower prevalence of burnout indicates the support structure may play a significant role. Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the relationship between COVID-19 and lower urinary tract symptoms in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia. Materials and methods: Data from forty outpatients who had recovered from COVID-19 and had previously been diagnosed with and treated medically for benign prostatic hyperplasia were assessed. Pre- and post-COVID-19 assessments were also conducted for prostate volume, total serum PSA concentration, and lower urinary tract symptoms. Hospitalizations related to COVID-19, the time interval between COVID-19 recovery and urologist referrals, and comorbidities were considered. Independent Student's t-tests or chi-square tests were used to compare changes in all variables. For the Spearman rank correlation analysis, only variables with a univariate analysis of p < 0.10 were included in the multiple regression models, with the significance threshold set at two-tailed p < 0.05. Results: After COVID-19, there was an increase in IPSS (12.87 ± 3.76), total serum PSA (1.56 ± 0.87), and prostate volume (10.68 ± 11.73). Multiple linear regression analysis of the independent predictors of IPSS increase revealed pre-COVID-19 IPSS with intermittency and straining as leading symptoms and bladder catheterization during COVID-19. Pre-COVID-19 frequency and nocturia status were found to be independent predictors of increased blood volume, hospital treatment for COVID-19, and bladder catheterization. A weak stream, UTI, and hypertension were found to be independent predictors of a PSA increase. The time from COVID-19 recovery to urologist referral was shorter in patients with post-COVID-19 IPSS increase (p < 0.05). Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy (r ESWT) as an additional treatment modality for spastic equinus deformity in chronic hemiplegic patients. Methods: 100 eligible stroke patients with calf muscles spasticity were randomized into 2 groups. Group I: 50 patients exposed to rESWT 1.500 pulses, 0.10 mJ to 0.3mJ/mm2, with a frequency 4 Hz once weekly for one month. Group II: 50 patients exposed to Sham rESWT once weekly for one month. Clinical, electrophysiological & musculoskeletal ultrasound assessments were done for all patients. Results: After controlling baseline as covariate, the trend for modified Ashworth scale (MAS), Passive ankle dorsiflexion motion (PADFM), 10 meters walk test (10-MWT), and Ratio of maximum H reflex to maximum M response (H/M ratio) after one & two months was significantly different between the two groups, with improvement of all clinical and electrophysiological parameters in group I. Conclusion: ESWT represents a useful non-invasive, additional modality for the reduction of foot spasticity and equinus deformity in stroke patients. Implications for Rehabilitation: Extracorporeal shock wave therapy represents a useful non-invasive, additional modality for reduction of foot spasticity and equinus deformity in chronic stroke patients. The application of such a modality improves limb posture, range of motion, and muscle extensibility. Purpose: This study evaluated whether anthropometric measurements and the five times sit-to-stand test could be used to identify dynapenia. The cut-off values of accurate screening tools for identifying dynapenia were also established. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted on individuals ≥ 60 years old (N = 529). All participants underwent handgrip strength measurement, anthropometric measurements and the five times sit-to-stand test. The participants whose handgrip strength was < 28 kg for men and < 18 kg for women were considered to have dynapenia. The association between the recorded variables and dynapenia was determined using logistic regression, and cut-off values were established by performing the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve analysis. Results: The prevalence of dynapenia was 35.42% in men and 25.61% in women. For males, both calf circumference (≤ 35.2 cm) and the five times sit-to-stand test (≥ 14.6 s) could be used as accurate tools for dynapenia. For females, only the five times sit-to-stand test (≥ 11.8 s) had sufficient accuracy to be used as a screening tool for dynapenia. Conclusions: The five times sit-to-stand test was an accurate screening tool for identifying dynapenia. The calf circumference could be only used as a screening tool in males. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: Calf circumference and the five times a sit-to-stand test can be used as accurate screening tools in males with dynapenia. Only the five times sit-to-stand test had sufficient accuracy in females with dynapenia. Purpose: To examine associations between illness perception, also called illness cognitions or appraisals, disposition of passive coping, and symptoms of anxiety and depression, and to test whether passive coping mediates the associations between illness perception and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Materials and methods: Longitudinal, multicentre study. Participants were inpatients of spinal cord injury (SCI) rehabilitation. Measures included the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (B-IPQ), the Utrecht Coping List passive coping subscale (UCL-P), and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). Mediation was tested with the PROCESS tool. Results: The questionnaires were completed by 121 participants at admission and at discharge. Of them, 70% were male, 58% had a paraplegia, and 82% an incomplete lesion. Weak to strong (0.294–0.650) significant associations were found between each pair of study variables. The use of passive coping strategies mediated the associations between illness perception and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Conclusion: Symptoms of anxiety and depression were more frequent in people who have a threatening illness perception combined with a lower use of passive coping strategies. Therefore, it is advised that patients are screened and treated for threatening illness perception and high use of passive coping strategies during rehabilitation after SCI. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION: For rehabilitation professionals it is recommended to screen inpatients with spinal cord injury (SCI) for illness perception and disposition of passive coping to identify those who may be more vulnerable for symptoms of anxiety and depression at admission. Inpatients with SCI who report a threatening illness perception in combination with a high use of passive coping at admission, have an increased risk for symptoms of anxiety and depression. For rehabilitation professionals it is recommended to repeat this screening to support careful planning of psychological (follow-up) treatment and coordination of care at discharge. Background: The interrelation between infections, subjective cognitive decline (SCD), and dementia development is recognized, but not fully understood. This study explored the combined effect of specific infections and SCD on the risk of dementia. Objectives: To assess the influence of Helicobacter pylori, herpes simplex virus, varicella-zoster virus, and human papillomavirus on dementia risk in individuals with varying cognitive statuses, especially focusing on those with and without SCD. Methods: A cohort of 1,100,540 participants aged 66 years from the Korean National Health Insurance Service was divided into cognitively preserved (CP, n = 825,405) and SCD (n = 275,135) groups. This study analyzed the effects of single, dual, and triple infections on the risk of overall dementia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and vascular dementia (VaD) using incidence rates and hazard ratios. Results: The SCD group consistently showed a doubled risk of dementia, particularly AD, regardless of the number of infections. In the initial data, both the presence and number of infections, especially in the CP group, were associated with an increased dementia incidence and risk; however, this correlation disappeared after adjusting for covariates, hinting at a possible protective effect. Conclusion: Our findings emphasize that, while SCD is a steadfast risk factor for dementia, the role of infections is layered, subject to various influences, and requires more comprehensive exploration to fully understand their impact on dementia development. Background: Swine flu might serve as a model for challenges that primary care faces during pandemics. This study examined changes in the numbers and diagnoses of general practitioner (GP) visits during and after the Swine flu pandemic in Vantaa, a Finnish city, and how GP activities recovered after the pandemic. Putative sex and age group differences were also evaluated. Methods: The study was an observational retrospective study. The monthly number of patient visits to primary care GPs by women and men in age groups 0–19, 20–64 and 65 + years was recorded before, during and two years after the Swine flu pandemic. The recorded diagnoses were also examined. The investigation period was from 2008 to 2012. Results: The numbers of monthly visits to primary care decreased from 12 324 (mean) to 10 817 in women and from 8563 to 7612 in men during the first six months of the Swine flu, returning to the original level afterwards. This decrease was thus slightly more prominent in women. However, as the size of the population increased during the follow-up period, the actual number of GP visits adjusted for the size of population remained at a decreased level for two years after the Swine flu. This decrease was observed especially in office-hours visits of men (from 3692 to 3260) and women (from 6301 to 5428) of 20–64 years. Swine flu did not alter the number of visits to the primary care Emergency Department. The proportion of visits with diagnostic recordings of common infectious diseases mostly decreased during the Swine flu. Only a minor impact on the distribution of recordings of chronic diagnoses was found. Conclusion: A pandemic, such as Swine flu, may decrease office-hours visits to primary care GPs. This in turn may lead to activities of primary care being adjusted downward for a long time following the pandemic. Especially the age group 20–64 years may be affected. This risk should be considered when recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic begins. The increased funding provided for Community Health Worker (CHW) hiring and training as part of the COVID‐19 pandemic response was to increase their impact in alleviating the effects of negative social determinants of health in the lives of the most vulnerable individuals and communities. This enhanced use of CHW in vulnerable populations can also be used to improve access to such populations for applied research to study ways to improve health outcomes for low‐income minority populations. We carried out a feasibility study using the State CHW association as partners to reach CHWs working with low‐income minority population. Three hundred and three (303) clients of CHWs were interviewed on various demographic, health access, and employment information and both univariate and multivariate analyses was used to determine factors associated with being unvaccinated against COVID‐19 and chi‐squared used to determine if employment was associated with having health insurance. About half of the clients self‐identified as Black/African American and half as Hispanic. Two‐thirds were women and 52.1% were unemployed and 55.1% had no health insurance. There was no association between employment status and having health insurance. Majority (71.6%) had received one dose of a type of COVID‐19 vaccine and being younger and being African American were associated with not getting a dose of COVID‐19 vaccine, as well as being unemployed and not having health insurance. Most of the clients came to see the CHW about a Health/Healthcare issue of the five social determinants of health (SDOH). There were 38 different job titles provided by the clients and the job titles were mainly blue collar jobs and jobs in health and personal care. Our results indicate that CHWs reach the most vulnerable population who have limited health access and high unemployment and that CHWs can effectively be used for linkage to low‐income minority population for applied research. Our analyses found that in this low‐income population, being younger, being African American, being unemployed, and not having health insurance are each associated with not getting vaccinated against COVID‐19, and employment is not associated with having health insurance. We have shown that partnership with CHWs to access their clients as research subjects leads to elucidating new information on the population that can be used in addressing public health programming. Background: Improvement of the knowledge of pregnant mothers and their partners related to low birth weight (LBW) is a vital factor in preventing LBW and reducing its prevalence. Objectives: Implement and evaluate the effectiveness of a community based health promotion intervention on pregnant mothers and their partners to increase knowledge on birth weight and its determinants. The second objective is to determine the difference of the birth weight after implementing the intervention. Methods: A quasi experimental study design was used, and the setting was 806 pregnant mothers, 403 each in two districts. In 26 ANCs, twenty six initial training sessions were conducted as a group, with an average of three hours for each session. Three follow up sessions were conducted in each ANC over 04 months (in total 104 sessions). All sessions were conducted in groups of 10 to 20 antenatal couples. The pregnant mothers and their partners completed interviewer-administered questionnaires. Pre and post data were analysed based on four major knowledge categories using statistical methods. The McNemar's Chi Square test; Chi Square test, Fisher's Exact test, Paired t test, Student's independent sample t test, Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test and Mann Whitney U test methods were applied as appropriate. Results: Both mothers and their partners in the intervention group (IG) reached significantly higher gains in knowledge than in the comparison group (CG). The participants who got the lowest scores for knowledge, at the pre assessment, in IG, also improved more than the CG {mothers (p = 0.002) and partners (p = 0.007)}. The mean birth weight shows that the IG has significantly improved for both mothers (p < 0.001) and partners (p = 0.013) with low knowledge scores (< 50% of total). Background: A positive work environment can enhance nursing safety and patient satisfaction while alleviating nurse stress. Conversely, a poor work environment can harm nurses' physical and mental health and compromise the quality of care, particularly in the high-intensity and shift-based setting of the ICU. Objectives: Based on the Job demands-resources (JD-R) model, this study examined the effects of job demands and job resources in the work environment, as well as personal resources, on the night-shift alertness of ICU shift nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional correlational exploratory study, conducted from July to September 2022, recruited 291 ICU shift nurses from a hospital in Beijing, China. The Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire (COPSOQ), the Self-resilience scale, the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES), and the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) were used to subjectively and objectively measure the job demands, job resources, personal resources, and night-shift alertness. SPSS 26.0 and Mplus 8.3 were used to analyze the data and construct the structural equation model. Results: The night-shift reaction time was 251.0 ms (Median), indicating a relatively high level of alertness. Job demands were negatively correlated with both job resources (r=-0.570, P < 0.001) and personal resources (r=-0.462, P < 0.001), while a positive correlation existed between job resources and personal resources (r = 0.554, P < 0.001). The results show that increased job demands can lead to higher levels of nurse strain (β = 0.955, P < 0.001), whereas job resources were found that it can decrease strain (β=-0.477, P = 0.047). Adequate job resources can enhance motivation directly (β = 0.874, P < 0.001), subsequently reducing reaction time (β=-0.148, P = 0.044) and improving night-shift alertness among ICU shift nurses. Conclusion: Enhancing ICU shift nurses' work motivation through bolstering job resources can boost night-shift alertness. However, it is noteworthy that, in this study, neither strain nor individual resources significantly influenced nurses' night-shift alertness. This may be attributed to the complexity of the ICU environment and individual differences. Future research should explore the relationship between these factors and nurses' work alertness. Background: The overlapping clinical manifestations in parkinsonian variant of multiple system atrophy (MSA-P) and Parkinson's Disease (PD) can complicate clinical diagnostic accuracy, particularly in the early stage. The study aims to uncover the patterns of brain function in the initial phase of the two conditions. Methods: We recruited 24 MSA-P patients, 34 PD patients and 27 healthy controls (HC). Voxel-wise fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) was compared to characterize regional brain function, followed by seedbased functional connectivity (FC) analysis. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analyses were used to examine the diagnostic accuracy of fALFF. Results: Compared to HC, decreased fALFF was observed in the bilateral basal ganglia (BG) of MSA-P patients, while decreased fALFF was identified in the left BG of PD patients. Additionally, elevated fALFF was found in the superior cerebellum for MSA-P patients and the temporo-occipital cortex for PD patients. Furthermore, PD patients exhibited increased FC in the cortico-striatal loop compared to MSA-P patients. The fALFF of the left caudate distinguished MSA-P from HC with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.838 (p < 0.001) and from PD with an AUC of 0.772 (p < 0.001). The fALFF of the left putamen distinguished PD from HC with an AUC of 0.736 (p = 0.002). Conclusion: Our findings indicated common and distinct abnormalities in spontaneous brain activity within BG, cerebellum, and cortices in early-stage MSA-P and PD patients. Background: Narrative nursing is a novel approach according with humanistic care, which has been shown to be effective in improving health outcomes for both patients and nurses. Nevertheless, few studies have investigated the status of narrative nursing practice among nurses, and a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing this practice remains elusive. Design: This was an observational, cross-sectional study using convenience sampling method. Methods: After obtaining the informed consent, a total of 931 registered nurses from three hospitals in China were investigated. Data were collected using the Social Support Rating Scale, the General Self-efficacy Scale, and the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Survey of Clinical Nurses on Narrative Nursing. All the scales were validated in the Chinese population. The questionnaire results were verified by an independent investigator. Factors influencing narrative nursing practice were determined through a series of analyses, including independent sample t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson correlations. Subsequently, path analysis was performed and a structural equation model was established. Results: The score of narrative nursing practice in this study was 30.26 ± 5.32. The structural equation model showed a good fit, with a Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) of 0.007 (90%CI: 0.000, 0.047). Both social support and narrative nursing attitude could directly affect narrative nursing practice (βsocial support = 0.08, P < 0.001; βattitude = 0.54, P < 0.001) and indirectly influence it via self-efficacy (βsocial support = 0.04, P < 0.001; βattitude = 0.06, P < 0.001). In addition, narrative nursing knowledge (β = 0.08, P < 0.001) and the nurses' growth environment (β=-0.06, P < 0.001) also affected the practice of narrative nursing. Conclusion: Narrative nursing in China is at a medium level and could be influenced by several personal and environmental factors. This study highlighted the critical role of nursing management in the advancement of narrative nursing practices. Background: In India, twenty-five percent of women who menstruate are unable to utilize sanitary methods, and even among those who have access, there are multiple obstacles to achieving proper menstrual hygiene management. The consequences of inadequate menstrual health may extend to affect a girl's socialisation, empowerment, overall well-being, and even survival. Objectives: To estimate the prevalence of unmet menstrual practice needs and its determinants among college going women in Coimbatore district, India. Methodology: A questionnaire based analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 3144 college going women from October 2022 to January 2023. Menstrual Practice Needs Scale (MPNS-36) was used to collect data regarding the unmet needs and their mean scores were compared across socio-demographic variables, menstrual knowledge, and the choice of hygiene material. Results: The mean (SD) age of the study population was 19.3 (1.8) years. The prevalence of unmet menstrual practice needs was 62.8% with a mean (SD) MPNS score of 1.8 (0.4). The total MPNS score was low for those currently residing in rural or having a rural hometown. The unmet need was better for those residing in-campus of the educational institute and having educated parents. The socioeconomic class and presence of a personal income also influenced the total MPNS scores significantly (p < 0.05). Menstrual talks with friends before puberty and with friends and family after puberty improved the MPNS scores. Regarding menstrual hygiene methods, modern menstrual methods (MMM), disposable and bio-degradable materials had a lower unmet need. Marital status, freedom to manage expenses, pre-pubertal menstrual talks with family, and total number of family members did not influence the scores of MPNS. Multivariate regression analysis showed that maternal education, menstrual talks with family after puberty, and type of menstrual hygiene method including its disposability were independent predictors of total MPNS scores. Conclusion: Addressing unmet menstrual practice needs among college-going women in Coimbatore district necessitates a multifaceted approach encompassing education, access to affordable and sustainable menstrual products, and destigmatization efforts. Purpose: Susceptibility map weighted imaging (SMWI), based on quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM), allows accurate nigrosome-1 (N1) evaluation and has been used to develop Parkinson’s disease (PD) deep learning (DL) classification algorithms. Neuromelanin-sensitive (NMS) MRI could improve automated quantitative N1 analysis by revealing neuromelanin content. This study aimed to compare classification performance of four approaches to PD diagnosis: (1) N1 quantitative “QSM-NMS” composite marker, (2) DL model for N1 morphological abnormality using SMWI (“Heuron IPD”), (3) DL model for N1 volume using SMWI (“Heuron NI”), and (4) N1 SMWI neuroradiological evaluation. Method: PD patients (n = 82; aged 65 ± 9 years; 68% male) and healthy-controls (n = 107; 66 ± 7 years; 48% male) underwent 3 T midbrain MRI with T2*-SWI multi-echo-GRE (for QSM and SMWI), and NMS-MRI. AUC was used to compare diagnostic performance. We tested for correlation of each imaging measure with clinical parameters (severity, duration and levodopa dosing) by Spearman-Rho or Kendall-Tao-Beta correlation. Results: Classification performance was excellent for the QSM-NMS composite marker (AUC = 0.94), N1 SMWI abnormality (AUC = 0.92), N1 SMWI volume (AUC = 0.90), and neuroradiologist (AUC = 0.98). Reasons for misclassification were right–left asymmetry, through-plane re-slicing, pulsation artefacts, and thin N1. In the two DL models, all 18/189 (9.5%) cases misclassified by Heuron IPD were controls with normal N1 volumes. We found significant correlation of the SN QSM-NMS composite measure with levodopa dosing (rho = −0.303, p = 0.006). Conclusion: Our data demonstrate excellent performance of a quantitative QSM-NMS marker and automated DL PD classification algorithms based on midbrain MRI, while suggesting potential further improvements. Objectives: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate if serum levels of granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) and CC chemokine ligand 17 (CCL17) correlate with disease activity in axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) and peripheral spondyloarthritis (pSpA) patients. Patients and methods: The cross-sectional study was conducted with 80 individuals (48 females, 32 males; mean age: 47.7±11.5 years) between March 2021 and September 2021. Of the participants, 20 were axSpA, 20 were pSpA, and 20 were active rheumatoid arthritis patients, and the remaining 20 were healthy controls. Age, sex, body mass index, disease duration, comorbid diseases, smoking status, medical treatments, C-reactive protein (CRP) level and human leukocyte antigen B27 (HLA-B27) positivity were recorded. Serum GM-CSF and CCL17 levels were analyzed by ELISA. Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score with CRP (ASDAS-CRP) was used to evaluate the disease activity of patients with spondyloarthritis. Functional status of spondyloarthritis patients was evaluated by Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI). Results: While the serum GM-CSF levels were similar in the axSpA and pSpA groups, they were significantly higher than the healthy control group (p=0.021 and p=0.009, respectively). There was a significant correlation between GM-CSF levels and ASDAS-CRP (r=0.545, p=0.013) and BASFI (r=0.546, p=0.013) in the axSpA group. In active axSpA patients, the cut-off value for GM-CSF was 15.89 pg/mL (sensitivity 50%, specificity 100%). No differences were detected in serum CCL17 levels among the groups. Purpose: There is limited research on the use and outcomes of veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) treatment for massive pulmonary embolism (PE). This study compared VA-ECMO treatment for massive PE versus patients treated medically. Materials and methods: Patients diagnosed with massive PE at one hospital system were reviewed. VA-ECMO and non-ECMO groups were compared by t test and Chi-square. Mortality risk factors were identified by logistic regression. Survival was assessed by Kaplan Meier and propensity matching of groups. Results: Ninety-two patients were included (22 VA-ECMO and 70 non-ECMO). Age (OR 1.08, 95% CI 1.03–1.13), arterial SBP (OR 0.97, 95% CI 0.94–0.99), albumin (OR 0.3, 95% CI 0.1–0.8), and phosphorus (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.4–3.17) were independently associated with 30-day mortality. Alkaline phosphate (OR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01–1.05) and SOFA score (OR 1.3, 95% CI 1.06–1.51) were associated with 1-year mortality. Propensity matching showed no difference in 30-day (59% VA-ECMO versus 72% non-ECMO, p = 0.363) or 1-year survival (50% VA-ECMO versus 64% non-ECMO, p = 0.355). Conclusions: Patients treated with VA-ECMO for massive PE and medically treated patients have similar short- and long-term survival. Background: Postcardiotomy extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in pediatric patients can be affected by the place of initiation, either in the operating room (OR) or the pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (PCICU). This study aimed to characterize and compare patients who had postcardiotomy ECMO initiation in the OR or PCICU and evaluate risk factors for hospital mortality. Methods: This retrospective study included 103 patients who required postcardiotomy ECMO support after the repair of congenital cardiac lesions from 2010 to 2022. Patients were grouped according to the place of ECMO insertion into two groups. Group 1 (n = 69) had ECMO insertion in the OR, and Group 2 (n = 34) had ECMO insertion in the PCICU. Results: Cardiac arrest occurred significantly more often in patients with ECMO insertion in the PCICU (21 (61.76%) vs. 13 (18.84%); p < 0.001). Pre-ECMO lactate levels, pH, VIS, base deficit, and PaO2 did not differ between the groups. Re-exploration for bleeding was significantly higher in Group 1 (32 (46.38%) vs. 8 (23.53%); p = 0.03). Cannula repositioning (4 (11.76%) v. 2 (2.90%); p = 0.09) and mechanical ventilation time were nonsignificantly higher in Group 2 (19.5 (10–31) vs. 11 (5–25) days; p = 0.07). No difference in mortality was found between groups (42 (60.87%) vs. 23 (67.65%), p = 0.50). By multivariable analysis, elevated lactate on ECMO and low pH before ECMO were associated with mortality. Background: Myocardial protection is essential in cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass The Del Nido cardioplegia which was initially used in pediatric cardiac surgery, has been increasingly used in adult cardiac surgery recently. However, no literature has reported the efficacy of DNC in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. Methods: This retrospective study involved elective patients who underwent extended surgical myectomy with or without concomitant cardiac surgical procedures between September 2017 and June 2022. Patients were distributed into two groups, the DNC and the CBC group. The primary outcome was high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-TnI) and creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB) levels at the 0, 1, and 2 postoperative days. The secondary outcomes contained: intraoperative LVEF, return to spontaneous rhythm; postoperative myocardial infarction, worsening or deteriorating of EF, mechanical circulatory support; new-onset atrial fibrillation; mechanical ventilation duration; intensive care unit hours; in-hospital days. Results: Fifty-nine patients were included and divided into the CBC (n = 15) and the DNC group (n = 44). There was no statistical difference in patients' demographics and preoperative parameters between the two groups. No in-hospital mortality. The total cardioplegia volume [21.93(18.36,26.07) vs. 25.68(23.17,37.12), p = 0.012] and infusion times [1(1,1) vs. 2(2,3), p = 0.000] were less and the incidence of return to spontaneous rhythm after declamping was higher in the DNC group [97.7% vs. 73.3%, p = 0.013]. Postoperative hs-TnI and CK-MB levels were comparable between the two groups. A longer DNC infusion interval was associated with higher levels of CK-MB on postoperative day 1 and day 2 (p = 0.009 and p = 0.011, respectively). Conclusions: The use of DNC in extended surgical myectomy procedure was as safe and effective as CBC. The supplementary motor area (SMA) is involved in the functional deficits of chronic ankle instability (CAI), but the structural basis of its abnormalities remains unclear. To determine the differences in volume- and surface-based morphologic features of the SMA between patients with CAI and healthy controls and the relationship between these features and the clinical features of CAI. Cross-sectional study. Sports medicine laboratory. A total of 32 patients with CAI (10 women, 22 men; age = 32.46 ± 7.51 years) and 31 healthy controls (12 women, 19 men; age = 29.70 ± 8.07 years) participated. We performed T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging of participants and calculated volume- and surface-based morphologic features of SMA subregions. These subregions included anterior and posterior subdivisions of the medial portion of Brodmann area 6 (6 ma and 6 mp, respectively) and supplementary and cingulate eye fields. Between-group comparisons and correlation analysis with clinical features of CAI were performed. Moderately thinner 6 mp (motor-output site; Cohen d = −0.61; 95% CI = −1.11, −0.10; P =.02) and moderately plainer 6 ma (motor-planning site; Cohen d = −0.70; 95% CI = −1.20, −0.19; P =.01) were observed in the CAI than the control group. A thinner 6 mp was correlated with lower Foot and Ankle Ability Measure Activities of Daily Living subscale scores before (r = 0.400, P =.02) and after (r = 0.449, P =.01) controlling for covariates. Patients with CAI had a thinner 6 mp and a plainer 6 ma in the SMA compared with controls. The thin motor-output site of the SMA was associated with ankle dysfunction in patients. Aims: Echocardiographic diastolic parameters are used to diagnose and monitor increased left ventricular filling pressure (LVFP) and we hypothesized that increased loading conditions cause increased E/e′. Our aim was to assess the effect of preload augmentation on diastolic parameters among both healthy subjects and subjects with known cardiac disease. Methods and results: We included 129 subjects merged from two cohorts; one dialysis cohort (n = 47) and one infusion cohort (n = 82). Echocardiography was performed immediately before and after hemodialysis (HD) or saline infusion, under low and high loading conditions. Elevated LVFP was defined as septal E/e′ ≥ 15 and/or lateral E/e′ ≥ 13 at high‐loading conditions. The population was divided according to elevated LVFP (n = 31) and normal LVFP (n = 98). The load difference for the population was 972 ± 460 mL, with no differences in load difference between elevated and normal LVFP (p NS). The subjects with elevated LVFP were older (63 ± 11 vs. 46 ± 16 years, p <.001), and had lower LV ejection fraction (50 ± 14 vs. 59 ± 8.1%, p <.01). After augmented preload, EDV increased in the normal LVFP group (p <.01) but remained unchanged in the elevated LVFP group (p NS). Both E and e′ increased among the subjects with normal LVFP, whereas E/e′ remained unchanged (∆E/e′ +.1 [‐.5–1.2]), p NS). Among the subjects with elevated, LVFP we observed increased E but not e′, resulting in significantly increased E/e′ (∆ average E/e′ +2.4 [0–4.0], p <.01). Introduction: Inter-individual variability may contribute to impaired cervicocephalic kinesthetic sensibility (CKS) in patients with nonspecific neck pain. Objectives: To identify subgroups of participants with nonspecific neck pain based on cervical joint position errors (JPEs) and to determine potential factors associated with identified subgroups. Methods: One hundred participants with nonspecific neck pain (unidentified pathoanatomical cause) and 50 controls were recruited. JPEs were measured in cervical extension and rotation, using a laser pointer. JPEs were expressed as absolute (AEs), constant (CEs), and variable (VEs) errors. Clinical characteristics were pain intensity, duration, disability, side of pain, dizziness, psychological features, and range of motion. All tests were performed within 1 day. A cluster analysis was conducted based on AEs. A logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with the cluster groups. Results: Analysis divided neck pain participants into two groups: cluster 1 with greater impaired CKS (n = 36) and cluster 2 with lesser impaired CKS (n = 64). The AEs (all cervical movements) and CE (left rotation) were larger in cluster 1 than 2 (p ≤.002). Overall, participants in clusters 1 and 2 had larger AEs, CEs, and VEs than controls (p ≤.04). The presence of dizziness was a risk factor associated with cluster 1 (OR=2.5, p =.04). The other characteristics were not associated with the cluster groups (p ≥.09). Conclusion: The AEs identified two subgroups of patients with nonspecific neck pain. Participants in subgroup 1 had greater impaired CKS, and participants in subgroup 2 had lesser impaired CKS. Objective This study was designed to compare thiol/disulfide and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels between psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and healthy controls and evaluate the correlation between these molecules and the disease activity scores used in PsA. Methods A total of 63 PsA patients and 49 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), modified disease activity score 28 (DAS28), and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) scores were used as disease activity indices for PsA patients. Calculations of native thiol (-SH), disulfide (-SS), and total thiol (-SH+-SS) molecules were made by the automatic spectrophotometric method, and the albumin cobalt binding test was used to measure IMA levels. Results In the PsA group, -SS/-SH and -SS/(-SH+-SS) levels were higher and -SH/(-SH+-SS) levels were lower than in controls. In the linear regression analysis, a significant correlation relationship was detected between DAS28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and -SS/(-SH+-SS) (β = 0.795, CI 95%, 0.196-1.395; P =.010), -SH/(-SH+-SS) (β = -0.475, CI 95%, 0.114-0.836; P =.010) and IMA (β = 3.932, CI 95%, 0.859-7.005; P =.013). Additionally, a significant correlation was detected between IMA and BASDAI and BASFI. Conclusion In PsA, thiol/disulfide homeostasis has shifted in favor of disulfide as an oxidative indicator. Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the age-related changes of the Contralateral Acoustic Reflex Suppression (CARS) test in individuals with normal hearing and to provide age-related normal values. Method: The study included 66 individuals aged 18-65 years. The participants were divided into three age groups, respectively, 18-30 years, 31-45 years, and 46--65 years. Acoustic reflex threshold and acoustic reflex amplitude measurements were performed at frequencies of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz in the presence and absence of suppressive noise from the contralateral ear. Results: In the comparison of suppression amounts according to age groups, the highest suppression amount at all frequencies was observed in the 18-30 years age group. Conclusions: It is known that changes in the function of the efferent hearing system occur due to aging. Introduction: Patients with schizophrenia have a higher lifetime prevalence of suicidal behavior (SB) compared to the general population. Therefore, understanding the possible neurobiology of suicide and predicting the risk of suicide in schizophrenia is a solemnly critical issue. Methods: 31 drug-naïve first episode schizophrenia (FES) patients with current SB (FES-S), 69 drug-naive patients with first episode schizophrenia without SB (FES-NS), and 69 drug-naïve non-psychotic patients with current SB (NPS) who were diagnosed according to The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders - 5 (DSM-5) participated the study. The control group (HC) consisted of 127 individuals matched with the patients. Symptoms at the time of evaluation were assessed using The Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) and Columbia Suicide Severity Rating Scale (CSSRS). Blood samples were collected from all participants to determine White blood cell (WBC), neutrophil, monocyte, albumin, C-reactive protein (CRP), Lymphocyte, and Platelet levels and to measure this protein ratio. Results: The blood levels of WBC, neutrophil, monocyte, albumin, CRP, and Neutrophil/Albumin Ratio (NAR) were higher in all patient groups compared to HC. CRP/Albumin Ratio (CAR) value was observed to be highest in the NPS group. Monocyte/Lymphocyte Ratio (MLR) value was significantly higher in patients with FES compared to HC. There were no significant differences between the FES-S group and the FES-NS and NPS groups. Conclusion: It can be suggested that although inflammation is not a predictor for suicide attempts in schizophrenia, it is associated with the degree of suicide risk in schizophrenia.
