This paper is an edited and expanded version of a public lecture given at the Emeritus Faculty of the Australian National University (ANU) on 16 March 2011. Based on the work of German theologian Jürgen Moltmann, the author explores the notion of wisdom as a possible point of contact between science and theology. After laying out some specific challenges common to both disciplines, the paper intimates that the interwoven complexity of existence points to oneness in the underlying fabric of reality. Provided science and theology enter the interdisciplinary space Moltmann calls "wisdom", the intellectual resources of the two disciplines can enrich each other, although this has not been the popular perception for the last 150 years. Message sticks are wooden objects once widely used in Indigenous Australia for facilitating important long-distance communications. Within this tradition an individual wishing to send a message would carve a stick and apply conventional symbols to its surface. The stick was entrusted to a messenger who carried the object into the territory of another community together with a memorised oral statement. Between the 1880s and the 1910s, settlers and international scholars took great interest in message sticks and this was reflected in efforts to document, collect and store them in museums worldwide. However, by this period, the practice was already undergoing profound changes, having been abandoned in many parts of the continent and transformed in others. While message sticks were still being used in a traditional way in Western Arnhem Land up until at least the late 1970s, today they feature in public interactions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous organisations, in art production and in oral narrations. Accordingly many questions concerning the history, pragmatics and global significance of message stick communication remain unanswered. To address this we have compiled the Australian Message Stick Database, a new resource hosted at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, and The Australian National University, Canberra. It contains images and data for over 1500 individual message sticks sourced from museums, and supplemented with information derived from published and unpublished manuscripts, private collections, and from field recordings involving contemporary Indigenous consultants. For the first time, knowledge about Australian message sticks can be evaluated as a single set allowing scholars and Traditional Owners to explore previously intractable questions about their histories, meanings and purposes. At 9.30pm on 28th February, 2007, a supercell storm hit Canberra, causing major damage to the city and the Australian National University, which has its main campus located on the western fringe of the city centre. As a consequence, the university was closed for five days, while the buildings were checked for structural/electrical damage caused by hailstones and flooding. This paper provides a case study on the emergency management strategy employed by the university in response to damage caused to campus facilities and consequent disruption to academic activities. It focuses on the immediate response, with particular emphasis on organisational arrangements and communications. While the response strategy was largely effective, several gaps in procedures were identified, including broadcast communications to the campus community, controlling access to 'closed' buildings and managing the impact of the campus closure on new students in residential halls. The article is a foreword for the "Scientific Detector Workshop 2022" (SDW2022) held in Potsdam, Germany. The workshop aims to facilitate the exchange of information about high-performance visible and infrared detectors and systems, with a focus on their application in astronomy. The success of the workshop is demonstrated by the participation of colleagues from observatories, laboratories, and industry worldwide. Information about several papers discussed at the Australian National University colloquium that was held in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory (ACT) on November 29-30, 2010 on renewable energy (RE) law and policy is presented. Topics include legal and policy barriers to the promotion of solar and wind energy, investment in solar energy developments, and energy efficiency. The event featured several practitioners and scholars including Adrian Bradbrook, Wayne Smith and Andrew Macintosh.

The article highlights an annual "Indonesia Update" conference with the Australian National University's (ANU) Department of Political and Social Change in Indonesia. This paper presents the design and science goals for the SkyMapper telescope. SkyMapper is a 1.3-m telescope featuring a 5.7-square-degree field-of-view Cassegrain imager commissioned for the Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics. It is located at Siding Spring Observatory, Coonabarabran, NSW, Australia and will see first light in late 2007. The imager possesses 16 384 16 384 0.5-arcsec pixels. The primary scientific goal of the facility is to perform the Southern Sky Survey, a six-colour and multi-epoch (four-hour, one-day, one-week, one-month and one-year sampling) photometric survey of the southerly 2? sr to g ?23 mag. The survey will provide photometry to better than 3? global accuracy and astrometry to better than 50 milliarcsec. Data will be supplied to the community as part of the Virtual Observatory effort. The article focuses on the Centre for the Study of the Chinese Southern Diaspora (CSCSD), an academic centre at The Australian National University in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory. The goals of CSCSD include promoting research on people of Chinese descent in regions such as New Zealand and Australia. The financial assistance from the nonprofit Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange allowed CSCSD to hold a successful international workshop from 28-29 July 2010.

Museum studies is an academic and practical field of research that is ever expanding and alive with potential, opportunity, and challenge paralleling the extraordinary growth of museums in every part of the world. Museum Worlds: Advances in Research, launched in 2012, has responded to the need for a rigorous, in-depth review of current work in museums and related industries, including galleries, libraries, archives, and cultural heritage. The inspiration for the journal came from Howard Morphy, Professor of Anthropology at the Australian National University in Canberra, along with founding editors Kylie Message, also at the ANU, and Sandra Dudley from the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester. Isotope geology began in the Department of Geophysics, the Australian National University, Canberra, in the late 1950s. A K-Ar dating laboratory was set up in 1960, with development of Rb-Sr dating facilities taking place soon after. These laid the foundations for extensive programs of isotopic dating with emphasis on providing quantitative age information related to the geological evolution of the Australian continent. Demonstration of progressive younging of granite emplacement to the northeast in the Tasman Fold Belt of eastern Australia was a notable initial achievement. Early successes on broader questions included the demonstration of the ability to measure K-Ar ages on young volcanic rocks, leading on to a significant role in the establishment of the geomagnetic polarity time-scale. In the early 1970s, dating of returned lunar samples by the Rb-Sr method was another most notable success. The development of the SHRIMP ion microprobe, commencing in the mid-1970s, resulted in U-Pb dating of zircon (and other minerals) becoming possible on very small areas of single crystals, revolutionising the approach to dating, with wide application not only to rocks in Australia, but indeed worldwide. Isotope geochemical study of the Earth's mantle and crust was also an important activity, especially in the 1980s. Subsequently, emphasis has been redirected toward studies of the Quaternary, including U-series isotopic dating as well as high-resolution isotopic and element ratio measurements, especially on corals, to track climate change. Many other developments in isotopic dating and isotope geochemistry have taken place over the last 45 years with installation and, in some cases, development of appropriate instrumentation, facilitating the updating of capabilities and expanding the range of techniques, continuing to the present time. New regulatory state scholarship has documented the rise of pluralized forms of governance that lay beyond central states. This has resulted in regulation being constituted by dense networks of actors and institutions. This article sets out to explore the role of police agencies within these networks through a case study of illicit synthetic drug control. Reducing the supply of illicit synthetic drugs presents unique challenges for the police compared to the control of traditional plant-based illicit drugs such as cannabis or heroin. A key focus of reducing supply is that of governing the interface between licit and illicit market activities. This strategy has required police agencies to increasingly engage in forms of meta-regulation. Under such a strategy, the police role is increasingly one of acting as “brokers” i.e., connecting the internal capacity of external institutions to crime control goals and promoting collective responses around externalities (i.e., opportunities for illegal conduct) generated by legitimate commercial activity. In a global environment in which global, national and local nodes relate freely within common networks, all research universities must pursue strategies for building global capacity and facilitating cross-border staff and student movement and research collaboration. The study compares readings of the global environment, global and international activities and relationships, and global capacity and strategy, in two leading national universities, one in a middle level developing country (Indonesia) and the other in a middle level developed country (Australia). The main tool of investigation was interviews with parallel groups of institutional leaders and leaders of academic units and research centres, in conjunction with study of the national and local contexts. It was apparent that in both cases, while global elements are increasingly important in university strategy, mission and identity, resource capacity remains highly dependant on national government and students. This belies the romantic myth of the ‘stand-alone’ corporate university in the global marketplace. The two cases also differ in some respects. While both universities are peak national institutions, and each respects the other, the Australian university is more strongly placed in the global environment and practical dealings between them are asymmetrical. The study helps to illuminate the dynamics of global stratification and hierarchy between developed and developing nations and institutions in higher education. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

J.W. Davidson, the foundation Professor of Pacific History at the Australian National University (1950-73) is best remembered as the scholar-activist who championed the cause of indigenous self-determination in the Pacific. His most important assignment involved being the Samoans' Constitutional Adviser in the run-up to independance (1959-61), and much of his later reputation rests on his book recounting the experience. What is not realised is that Davidson faced considerable obstruction from his Vice-Chancellor, who attached little importance to such work. When demands for Davidson's services in Western Samoa kept escalating, the University handed the problem to Sir John Crawford, the Director-Elect of the Research School of Pacific Studies. Instead of siding with the University, Crawford acted decisively on Davidson's behalf. Inexplicably, Crawford failed to go one step further and develope a policy covering the outside earnings of ANU academics - a problem that had just been highlighted by the Davidson affair.
