A descriptive annotated bibliography is presented of recent selected publications dealing with the reported health benefits and risks of fish and seafood consumption; fish and seafood including farmed and wild-caught finfish, crustaceans, mollusks, and seaweeds. The bibliography is presented in four parts, namely (1) review papers dealing with both the health benefits and risks of fish and seafood consumption, (2) specific papers dealing with health benefits related to: antioxidants; bone health; brain and mental health; cancer prevention; diabetes prevention; elderly and senior adults; fermentation; heart health and hypertension; immune response and allergies; infant and child health; lipids, fatty acids and sterols; minerals and trace elements; obesity and overweight reduction; polysaccharides; pregnancy and gestational health; proteins, peptides and amino acids; and vitamins and bioactive compounds; (3) specific papers dealing with health risks related to: algal blooms and shellfish biotoxins; antibiotics use and residues; cancer risks; chemicals; chronic kidney disease; microbial quality and safety; microplastics; minerals and heavy metals; parasites and pathogens; pesticides and persistent organic pollutants; public perception and media; seafood allergy; and smoking risks; and (4) supporting papers dealing with consumption advisories and dietary guidelines; improved decontamination and processing methods; and fish, food and nutrient security. A total of 552 papers are presented together with their annotated summaries. On the basis of the papers presented in this review, it is believed that the higher nutritional value and health benefits derived from increased fish and seafood consumption far out-way the potential negative risks to human health, and as such fish and seafood represent a valuable and much healthier alternative than processed fast-foods and many terrestrial animal food products in the global fight against heart disease and related health ailments. Timely and rapid detection of antibiotic residues in the environment is conducive to safeguarding human health and promoting an ecological virtuous cycle. A foldable paper-based photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor was successfully developed for the detection of ampicillin (AMP) based on glutathione/zirconium dioxide hollow nanorods/aptamer (GSH@ZrO 2 HS@apt) modified cellulose paper as a reactive zone with laser direct-writing lead sulfide/cadmium sulfide/graphene (PbS/CdS/LIG) as photoelectrode and cobalt hydroxide (CoOOH) as a photoresist material. Initially, AMP was introduced into the paper-based reaction zone as a biogate aptamer, which specifically recognized the target and then left the ZrO 2 HS surface, releasing glutathione (GSH) encapsulated inside. Subsequently, the introduction of GSH into the reaction region and etching of CoOOH nanosheets to expose the PbS/CdS/LIG photosensitive material increased photocurrent. Under optimal conditions, the paper-based PEC biosensor showed a linear response to AMP in the range of 5.0 - 2 × 104 pM with a detection limit of 1.36 pM (S/N = 3). In addition, the constructed PEC sensing platform has excellent selectivity, high stability and favorable reproducibility, and can be used to assess AMP residue levels in various real water samples (milk, tap water, river water), indicating its promising application in environmental antibiotic detection. In the recent years, the issue of antibiotic residues in food has become an important topic. Most current methods of detecting antibiotics are time-consuming, laborious, and cannot meet the requirements of field testing. In this study, electro-filter paper spray ionization was coupled with a portable linear ion trap mass spectrometer for the rapid determination of four antibiotics (norfloxacin, tetracycline, oxytetracycline, and chlortetracycline) in pork and milk samples. The experimental setup is not only structurally simple but enables analysis of both solid and liquid samples. The samples require only a simple pretreatment and the complete analysis of a sample requires less than 1 min. The linear range for the determination of the four antibiotic standards was from 1 to 100 mg/L (R2≥0.960). The limits of detection (LOD) for the analytes were 0.100 mg/L, with recoveries from 72.4% to 11%. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) were between 2.70% and 16.5%. This study expands the capability for rapid field testing of antibiotics in meat using portable mass spectrometers, which is important for food safety, environmental protection, and criminal investigations. The study's goal was to develop a spore-based paper strip biosensor for detecting ß-lactam antibiotics in milk using the enzyme induction principle. A new spore-based paper strip biosensor has been developed after important operating parameters such as spore volume, substrate volume, exposure time and temperature, and incubation time and temperature were optimised. The limit of detection for various ß-lactam antibiotics, including amoxicillin, penicillin, ampicillin, carbenicillin, cloxacillin, nafcillin, oxacillin, cephalothin, cefalexin, cefoxitin, cefazolin, and cefuroxime, was determined in milk with detection sensitivity of 1 ppb, 2 ppb, 2 ppb, 10 ppb, 10 ppb, 10 ppb, 20 ppb, 10 ppb 1000 ppb, 10 ppb 300 ppb and 100 ppb, respectively. It was also tested with other contaminants such non-ß-lactam antibiotics, pesticides, aflatoxin, heavy metals, and other chemical contaminants, and no interference was found, indicating that the created biosensor had a low rate of false positive and negative results. In comparison to the AOAC-approved CHARM-ROSA ß-lactam strip test, which identified 7 raw milk and zero pasteurised milk samples positive for ß-lactam antibiotics, the sensor was further analysed and verified using 200 raw milk and 105 pasteurised milk samples. This indicates a perfect match between our biosensor and the AOAC-approved CHARM-ROSA ß-lactam strip test. The developed spore-based paper strip biosensors are expected to be useful in the rapid and cost-effective detection of ß-lactam antibiotic residues in milk samples at the dairy farm, reception dock, and production units, respectively. Label-free electrochemical sensors have gained popularity as point-of-care devices because they do not require complicated labeling procedures. However, they have difficulties detecting multiple analytes simultaneously. In this study, we developed a novel label-free electrochemical immunosensor on an origami paper–based analytical device (oPAD) for the simultaneous detection of quinolone antibiotics, in which norfloxacin (Nor) and enrofloxacin (Enr) were used as a model. The oPAD was designed with two antibody zones, each zone contains different antibodies. The oPAD has two thionine- and ferrocenecarboxylic acid-coated reagent zones, as redox species, which will generate the response current signals for the detection of quinolone antibiotics. The simultaneous current responses of thionine and ferrocenecarboxylic acid decreased proportionately when exposed to Nor and Enr concentrations, respectively. Under optimal conditions, this device provided linear range at concentrations of 0.01–10 µg/mL for the detection of Nor and Enr and limit of detection was calculated as 2.02 and 1.70 ng/mL, respectively. Moreover, this device demonstrates performance comparable to standard methods for the simultaneous detection of Nor and Enr in milk, honey, and fish. Therefore, label-free electrochemical immunosensors provide a highly potent, inexpensive, and portable method for detecting multiple quinolone antibiotics simultaneously on a single device. Antibiotic residues accumulation in the environment endangers ecosystems and human health. There is an urgent need for a facile and efficient strategy to detect antibiotics. Here, we report a photoluminescent sensor array based on protein-stabilized gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) for the detection of two families of antibiotics, tetracyclines and quinolones. The nanoclusters were synthesized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ovalbumin (OVA), respectively. They had different interactions with seven kinds of antibiotics and exhibited diverse photoluminescence (PL) responses, which were analyzed by linear discriminant analysis and ExtraTrees algorithms. The sensor array performed well in both classification and quantification of seven antibiotics. And the quantitative results of all antibiotics obtained R2 of no less than 0.99 at 0–100 μM when using suitable regression models. Additionally, the sensor array was able to distinguish antibiotic mixtures and multiple interfering substances, and it also kept 100% classification accuracy in river water samples. Moreover, test paper assisted by a smartphone was applied for quick detection of antibiotics, with good performance in both HEPES buffer and river water. It is crucial that simple and high-throughput methods for determining multiple, or groups of, sulfonamides (SAs) be developed since they are widely used in animal husbandry and aquaculture. We developed a paper-based multicolor colorimetric aptasensor to detect 3 SAs: sulfaquinoxaline (SQ), sulfamethoxypyridazine (SMP) and sulfamethoxydiazine (SMD). Using a broad-specificity aptamer as a bioreceptor, we reduced the growth of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide I (NADH)–ascorbic acid (AA)-mediated gold nanobipyramids (AuNBPs) to generate a multicolor signal. We also used a paper-based analytical device (PAD) system to deposit AuNBPs for a sensitive color signal read out. The aptasensor can detect more color changes corresponding to the concentrations of SQ, SMP and SMD and has higher sensitivity, better specificity and stability. It can also be used to determine SQ, SMP and SDM individually, or collectively, or any two together with a visual detection limit of 0.3–1.0 µM, a spectrometry quantification limit (LOQ) of 0.3–0.5 µM and a spectrometry detection limits (LOD) of 0.09–0.15 µM. The aptasensor was successfully used to determine SQ, SMP and SDM in fish muscle with a recovery of 89–94% and a RSD n = 5) < 8%, making it a promising method for the rapid screening of total SQ, SMP and SDM residue in seafood. A paper-based polymeric ionic liquid (p-Poly-(MMA-IL)) was successfully developed by grafting the polymeric ionic liquid on the surface of commercial filter paper (FP) by using the dipping method, presenting a new cost-effective film. The newly developed p-Poly-(MMA-IL) FP was then applied as a paper-based thin-film microextraction (p-TFME) analytical device to extract 14 compounds as representative of five groups of antibiotic drugs, which were sulfonamides, tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, penicillin and macrolides in environmental water samples. Besides, p-Poly-(MMA-IL) FP, p-Poly-(MMA) FP, and unmodified filter paper were successfully characterised by FTIR, NMR, FESEM, TGA, and XRD techniques. They underwent significant parameters optimisation, which affected the extraction efficiency. Under optimal conditions, the proposed (p-Poly-(MMA-IL) FP-TFME) device method was evaluated and applied to analyse multi-class antibiotic drugs in environmental water samples by using a liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The validation method showed that a good linearity (0.1 μg L−1 - 500 μg L−1) was noted (R2 > 0.993, n = 3). Detection and quantification limits were within 0.05 μg L−1 – 4.52 μg L−1 and 0.15 μg L−1 – 13.6 μg L−1, respectively. The relative standard deviation (RSD) values ranged at 1.4%–12.2% (intra-day, n = 15) and 4.4%–11.0% (inter-day, n = 10). The extraction recoveries of environmental water samples ranged from 79.1% to 126.8%, with an RSD of less than 15.4% (n = 3). The newly developed paper-based polymeric ionic liquid (p-Poly-(MMA-IL) FP) for analysis of multi-class antibiotic drugs under the p-TFME analytical device procedure was successfully achieved with limited sample volume and organic solvent, fast extraction, and feasible in daily analysis. The detection concentration and relative RSD of multi-class antibiotics determined in various environmental water samples by the proposed method (n = 5) were within 0.44 μg L−1 – 54.41 μg L−1 and 0.69%–15.56%, respectively. These results signified the potential of the p-Poly-(MMA-IL) FP-TFME device as an efficient, sensitive and environmentally friendly approach for analysing antibiotics. Mycotoxins and pesticides are prevalent in cereal food. It is difficult to detect these two kinds of hazard factors simultaneously in rapid assay. In order to find a solution to the problem, carbamates and aflatoxins were selected in this study to establish a rapid, on-site, and quantitative paper sensor. Two novel monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against carbaryl and carbofuran (1D2 and G11) were developed. The IC50 values (half maximal inhibitory concentration) were 0.8 ng/mL and 217.6 ng/mL for carbaryl and carbofuran, respectively. Based on the sensitive and specific mAbs, a multi-TRFICA (time-resolved fluorescence) paper sensor was developed, which simultaneously detected six types of hazardous chemicals, including AFB 1 , AFB 2 , AFG 1 , AFG 2 , carbaryl, and carbofuran. A universal sample pretreatment method for mycotoxins and pesticides was explored to apply on established competitive indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (icELISA) and multi-TRFICA-paper sensor. The established paper sensor can be easily observed with naked eyes, qualitatively under a UV lamp, and quantitated using a home-made device. It exhibited a calculated limit of quantity for AFTs, carbaryl, and carbofuran of 0.03, 0.02, and 60.2 ng/mL in corn samples, respectively. The spiking-recoveries and real sample studies proved that multi-TRFICA-paper sensor is an accurate, sensitive, and high throughput detection method for simple and low-cost analysis in corn samples. Abstract Antibiotics monitoring is of importance in providing healthy diets by preventing animal husbandry from antibiotic misuse. The development of paper spray provides a time-efficient strategy to analyze antibiotics in complex matrices without sample preparation. In this work, paper spray mass spectrometry was applied to identify and quantify nine antimicrobial residues in four antimicrobial families from four kinds of general food matrix, including beef, chicken meat, milk and egg. Samples were directly placed on the paper without any further sample treatment. The limits of detections (LODs) were obtained as 15.0 μg/kg for marbofloxacin in chicken meat, 15.0 μg/kg for difloxacin in chicken meat, 12.5 μg/kg for lincomycin in beef, 12.5 μg/kg for clindamycin in beef, 4.0 μg/kg for amoxicillin in milk, 4.0 μg/kg for penicillin-G in milk, 10.0 μg/kg for cloxacillin in milk, 12.5 μg/kg for minocycline in egg, and 6.2 μg/kg chlortetracycline in egg, respectively. All the LODs were in accordance with the restriction of maximum residue limits (MRLs) of antimicrobial residues announced by the Council Regulation 2377/90/EEC, which suggests a sufficient capability of the paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) method to rapidly screen antimicrobial residues in foods of animal origins. The emergence of "superbugs" due to antibiotics overuse poses a significant threat to human health and security. The development of sensitive and effective antibiotics detection is undoubtedly a prerequisite for addressing antibiotics overuse-associated issues. However, current techniques for monitoring antibiotics typically require costly equipment and well-trained professionals. Hence, we developed herein a rapid, instrument-free, and on-site detection method for antibiotic residues such as norfloxacin (NOR) based on a ratiometric sensing platform utilizing "on–off–on" response properties of polychromatic fluorescence for direct visual quantitative NOR analysis. Specifically, this platform integrated iron ions (Fe3+)-chelated blue carbon dots (BCDs) for signal sensing and red carbon dots (RCDs) as an internal reference. The sensor mechanism is selective quenching of BCDs' blue fluorescence by Fe3+ via an inner filter effect with unaffected RCDs' red fluorescence. Further NOR addition led to competitive binding with BCDs due to Fe3+ shedding from the BCDs' surface for a recovered blue fluorescence signal. Notably, the ratiometric fluorescence sensor demonstrated rapid and highly sensitive NOR detection in a concentration range of 1–70 μM with an impressive detection limit of 6.84 nM. The ratiometric fluorescence sensing platform was constructed by integrating smartphone and paper-based strategies, which exhibited exceptional sensitivity, selectivity, and rapid response for portable, instrument-free, visual quantification of NOR in real samples. Antibiotic residues in aquatic environments have attracted wide attention. Considering the impacts on the ecosystem and human health, it is urgent to develop a rapid method for detecting antibiotic residues in the environment. In this work, a nanoscale lanthanide metal-organic framework Eu(TATB) with a stable red luminescence in aqueous solution is synthesized by the microemulsion method. Sulfamethazine (SMZ) is frequently most used in veterinary medicine as one of sulfonamides. Eu(TATB) can be used for sensitively and rapidly specific recognition of SMZ with low detection limit (0.67 μM) and eminent recyclability. In addition, a paper-based visual system for point-of-care (POC) monitoring SMZ is devised by both using filter paper embedded with Eu(TATB) and our developed portable smartphone-involved imaging cassette. The naked eyes can observe that the red luminescence of the paper sensor gradually fades away at the presence of SMZ. This provides a reliable and effective method for on-site detection of sulfonamide antibiotics in the field of environmental monitoring. In our work, a novel lanthanide metal-organic framework, Eu(TATB), was rationally designed and prepared for the effective recognition of sulfonamide (SMZ). Antibiotic residues are a huge threat to food safety and ecological environment and florfenicol (FF) is one of the most wide-spread antibiotics entering the food chain. Hence, rapid and sensitive methods for the detection of FF in food are highly required. In this study, we present a facile method for the fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) ZnO@Ag nanoflowers (ZnO@Ag NFs) assembling on polyester fiber membrane (PFM), which can be used as an economic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) paper sensor for sensitive determination of FF traces. 3D ZnO@Ag NFs that decorated on PFM provides sufficient "hot spots" and high chemical stability for the analytical platform. Without using any expensive materials and complicated methods, this flexible SERS substrate exhibits superior sensitivity, excellent uniformity, and well-reproducibility. The SERS response of the sensor toward FF shows excellent correlation during the range of 1 × 10−9 M to 1 × 10−3 M with the limit of detection (LOD) as low as 2.23 × 10−10 M. Antibiotic resistance (AR) is becoming a worldwide threat due to the increasing occurrence of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic bacterial strains. There is a general consensus about the potential implications of the use of antibiotics in livestock on the onset of antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB), mainly through meat consumption. However, the ever-increasing use of reclaimed wastewater (RWW) in agriculture may also contribute significantly to the non-accounted exposure to antibiotics, ARB, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). This position paper aims at evaluating the current knowledge concerning the occurrence of antibiotics, ARBs, and ARGs in edible parts of different common crops irrigated with RWW. We will discuss which regulations on the use of RWW may contribute to the minimization of the prevalence of these contaminants in crops, and provide recommendations on how to minimize the impact of these practices. Antibiotics are used largely in agriculture and animal farming. As a result, antibiotic residues are found in food products as well as pharmaceutical industries and farming wastes. Since consumption of food products contaminated with antibiotic in excessive residuals causes severe environmental risks, our study here aims to detect the residues level of selected antibiotics in milk and egg. For monitoring of the antibiotic residues in various food diaries, low-cost, simple and rapid methods are required. This paper reports fabricating a disposable microfluidic paper-based analytical device for detection and discrimination of 8 antibiotics. This small but efficient device works based on combination of paper microfluidics, sensor array concept (an array of metallochromic complexes, which provides an optical tongue, and chemometrics data analysis. The discrimination is based on differential interaction of the antibiotics with 5 metal-indicator complexes and displacing the chromogenic indicators. This resulted in specific color changes for each antibiotic. The discriminant models obtained by employing linear discriminant analysis could discriminate antibiotics in real samples of milk and egg white and yolk at concentrations of as low as 5.0 mg L−1 with 100% accuracy. Also, semi-quantitative analysis was provided to detect trace amounts of the antibiotics (1.0 mg L−1). Antibiotics such as tetracycline (TET) and chloramphenicol (CAP) are widely used, but their abuse leads to antibiotic residue which is harmful to human health. To obtain sensitive and accurate TET and CAP detections, we design the paper-based antibiotic sensor (PAS) relying on the colorimetric indirect competitive ELISA. PAS can be simply fabricated only via wax printing and surface modification, making the cost of single detection rather cheap as ∼0.15 US dollar; and additionally, it can be fabricated and conserved in good stability. Moreover, the PAS supporting smartphone application with the functions of image recording, correction and analysis is also designed for quantitative antibiotic detections. Using a series of standard solutions, it is proved that the PAS could reach the extremely low limits of detection as 0.5 ng/mL and 0.05 ng/mL as well as the wide effective linear detecting ranges as 1∼103 ng/mL and 0.1∼100 ng/mL in the TET and CAP detections, respectively. Failure to control the levels of emerging pollutants in water supply can affect the quality of human life, and this may be mitigated with a low-cost, real-time monitoring system. Herein, we describe a paper-based fully printed electrochemical sensor with reduced graphene nanoribbons (rGNR) capable of detecting sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) antibiotics simultaneously in real water samples. The electrodes were printed on parchment paper, which is environmentally friendly and has an efficient printing capacity. Deposition of rGNRs in the matrix was confirmed with Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS). Optimized sensing performance was obtained using an electrochemical treatment of the electrodes at neutral pH. The paper-based sensor displayed a linear response from 1 μmol l−1 to 10 μmol l−1 for both antibiotics, with detection limits of 0.09 μmol l−1 and 0.04 μmol l−1 for SMX and TMP, respectively. The objective of this review is to identify the microbiological alterations caused by various therapy modalities by critically analyzing the current findings. We limited our search to English-language papers published between 1 January 2004 and 7 May 2024 in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science that were relevant to our topic. In the search approach, the Boolean keywords "microbio*" AND "periodontitis" were used. A total of 5152 papers were obtained from the databases Web of Science (2205), PubMed (1793), and Scopus (1154). This resulted in 3266 articles after eliminating duplicates (1886), and 1411 entries were eliminated after their titles and abstracts were examined. The qualitative analysis of the 22 final articles is included in this study. Research on periodontal disease shows that periodontitis alters the oral microbiome and increases antibiotic resistance. Treatments like scaling and root planing (SRP), especially when combined with minocycline, improve clinical outcomes by reducing harmful bacteria. Comprehensive mechanical debridement with antibiotics, probiotics, EMD with bone grafts, and other adjunctive therapies enhances periodontal health. Antibiotics are commonly used as antibacterial medications due to their extensive and potent therapeutic properties. However, the overconsumption of these chemicals leads to their accumulation in the human body via the food chain, amplifying drug resistance and compromising immunity, thus presenting a significant hazard to human health. Antibiotics are classified as organic pollutants. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct research on precise methodologies for detecting antibiotics in many substances, including food, pharmaceutical waste, and biological samples like serum and urine. The methodology described in this research paper introduces an innovative technique for producing nanoparticles using silica as the shell material, iron oxide as the core material, and carbon as the shell dopant. By integrating a carbon-doped silica shell, this substance acquires exceptional fluorescence characteristics and a substantial quantum yield value of 80%. By capitalising on this characteristic of the substance, we have effectively constructed a fluorescent sensor that enables accurate ofloxacin analysis, with a detection limit of 1.3 × 10-6 M and a linear range of concentrations from 0 to 120 × 10-6 M. We also evaluated the potential of CSIONPs for OLF detection in blood serum and tap water analysis. The obtained relative standard deviation values were below 3.5%. Drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) threatens progress in the control of TB. Mathematical models are increasingly being used to guide public health decisions on managing both antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and TB. It is important to consider bacterial heterogeneity in models as it can have consequences for predictions of resistance prevalence, which may affect decision-making. We conducted a systematic review of published mathematical models to determine the modelling landscape and to explore methods for including bacterial heterogeneity. Our first objective was to identify and analyse the general characteristics of mathematical models of DR-mycobacteria, including M. tuberculosis. The second objective was to analyse methods of including bacterial heterogeneity in these models. We had different definitions of heterogeneity depending on the model level. For between-host models of mycobacterium, heterogeneity was defined as any model where bacteria of the same resistance level were further differentiated. For bacterial population models, heterogeneity was defined as having multiple distinct resistant populations. The search was conducted following PRISMA guidelines in five databases, with studies included if they were mechanistic or simulation models of DR-mycobacteria. We identified 195 studies modelling DR-mycobacteria, with most being dynamic transmission models of non-treatment intervention impact in M. tuberculosis (n = 58). Studies were set in a limited number of specific countries, and 44% of models (n = 85) included only a single level of "multidrug-resistance (MDR)". Only 23 models (8 between-host) included any bacterial heterogeneity. Most of these also captured multiple antibiotic-resistant classes (n = 17), but six models included heterogeneity in bacterial populations resistant to a single antibiotic. Heterogeneity was usually represented by different fitness values for bacteria resistant to the same antibiotic (61%, n = 14). A large and growing body of mathematical models of DR-mycobacterium is being used to explore intervention impact to support policy as well as theoretical explorations of resistance dynamics. However, the majority lack bacterial heterogeneity, suggesting that important evolutionary effects may be missed. To gain a broader understanding of the challenges surrounding DR-TB, mathematical models are increasingly being employed to estimate the impact of interventions, effectiveness of treatment, and to predict the evolution of drug-resistance. We undertook a systematic review of the existing DR-mycobacterium modelling literature, with the specific aim of capturing methods for including bacterial heterogeneity. In the evolving field of food safety, rapid and precise detection of antibiotic residues is crucial. This study aimed to tackle this challenge by integrating advanced inkjet printing technology with sophisticated microfluidic paper‐based analytical devices (µPADs). The µPAD design utilized “green” quantum dots synthesized via an eco‐friendly hydrothermal method using green white mulberry leaves as the carbon source, serving as the key fluorescent detection material. The action mechanism involved a photoinduced electron transfer system using red carbon dots (CDs) as electron donors and blue CDs combined with two‐dimensional layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets as electron acceptors. This system could quickly detect antibiotics within 10 min in pork and water samples, demonstrating high sensitivity and recovery rates: 6.5 pmol/L at 99.75%–110% for sulfadimethoxine, 3.3 pmol/L at 99%–105% for sulfamethoxazole, and 8.5 pmol/L at 98.5%–105% for tetracycline. It achieved a relative standard deviation under 5%, ensuring reliability and reproducibility. With the gradual expansion of aquaculture industry in China, the frequent occurrence of diseases in aquatic animal aquaculture and the pollution of aquatic water are becoming more and more serious. The long-term use of antibiotics and traditional vaccines in aquaculture has caused water pollution, drug-resistant strains, antibiotic residues, and other problems, which restricts the healthy development of aquaculture industry. Plant polysaccharides play an important role in replacing antibiotics. Plant polysaccharides exist in the leaves, flowers, roots, stems, and fruits of plants. They are macromolecular polymers that connect various monosaccharides by glycosidic bonds. Plant polysaccharides have the advantages of safety, high efficiency, low residue and no drug resistance. Plant polysaccharides have many biological functions, such as regulating immunity, anti-oxidation, lowering blood sugar, anti-tumor, and improving intestinal health. The application of plant polysaccharides in animal production can improve body health, enhance immunity and antioxidant capacity, and improve production performance. The excessive use of pesticides and drugs, coupled with environmental pollution, has resulted in the persistence of contaminants on food. These pollutants tend to accumulate in humans through the food chain, posing a significant threat to human health. Therefore, it is crucial to develop rapid, low-cost, portable, and on-site biosensors for detecting food contaminants. Among various biosensors, polymer-based biosensors have emerged as promising probes for detection of food contaminants in recent years, due to their various functions such as target binding, enrichment, and simple signal reading. This paper aims to discuss the characteristics of five types of food pollutants—heavy metals, pesticide residues, pathogenic bacteria, allergens, and antibiotics—and their adverse effects on human health. Additionally, this paper focuses on the principle of polymer-based biosensors and their latest applications in detecting these five types of food contaminants in actual food samples. Furthermore, this review briefly examines the future prospects and challenges of biosensors for food safety detection. This work presents a bibliographic review of the literature regarding the simultaneous removal of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and disinfection in domestic wastewater matrices. These two responses are usually evaluated independently, as most attention has been centered on the discussion over the removal of CECs in the last 10 years. However, the simultaneous removal of CECs and pathogens from wastewater has been recently brought to the spotlight, especially considering the removal of antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Aiming at a reproducible and nonbiased methodology, a combination of the construction of a bibliometric portfolio with systemic analysis was performed with peer-reviewed manuscripts published between 2008 and 2019 in five distinct databases. Several keyword combinations were necessary to achieve a relevant portfolio according to strict criteria. As a result, five highly cited papers and authors were selected. Among the advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) explored for simultaneous removal of CECs and disinfection in these papers, detailed results have been elucidated mainly for ozonation. Thus, revealing the broad range of questions that have yet to be investigated in depth for new technologies such as irradiated solar processes. In addition, there is a lack of information associated with simultaneous assessment of CEC removal and disinfection in real samples and in wastewater matrices originated from different secondary treatment technologies in diverse locations. Nowadays, antibiotics are widely used, increasing the risk of contamination of the water body and further threatening human health. The traditional water treatment process is less efficient in degrading antibiotics, and the advanced oxidation process (AOPs) is cleaner and more efficient than the traditional biochemical degradation process. The combined ozone/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) advanced oxidation process (O3/PMS) based on sulfate radical (SO4•−) and hydroxyl radical (•OH) has developed rapidly in recent years. The O3/PMS process has become one of the most effective ways to treat antibiotic wastewater. The reaction mechanism of O3/PMS was reviewed in this paper, and the research and application progress of the O3/PMS process in the degradation of antibiotics in drinking water and wastewater effluent were evaluated. The overuse and misuse of antibiotics to treat diseases and promote the growth of animals lead to the deposition of antibiotics in animal tissues, and subsequently, antibiotics come into the human body through the food chain. In this paper, comparative studies on antibiotic residue (AR) in foodstuffs from animal source and human health risks are reviewed in detail. The early part of this review is focused on the use of different veterinary antibiotics in animal farms and the marine environment as a reservoir of ARs. Later on, ARs in foodstuffs, including meat, milk, and marine foods have been comprehensively discussed. Review studies on human health issues associated with antibiotics show that people from poor and developing countries are the most vulnerable to infectious diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria. At the end of the review, some alternative approaches that include the use of phytogenic feed additive, organic acid, probiotic, prebiotic, and other substances are summarized, considering their potential exposure to replace antibiotics as growth promoters and mitigate the prevalence of antibiotic-resistant genes. Antibiotic abuse is considered a serious problem affecting human health, necessitating that great attention be paid to explore robust, simple and sensitive methods for rapid evaluation. In this paper, we developed a fluorescent aptasensor for visual and real-time kanamycin detection by taking advantage of the label-free strategy based on H-aggregate disassembly of a chiral cyanine dye induced by a G-quadruplex aptamer. The good sensitivity and selectivity enabled this aptasensor to have a detection limit as low as 43 nM and have high specificity for kanamycin recognition. Mass mortality events (MMEs) threaten the health of fish and are also a potential threat to the health and safety of workers. This paper presents findings from a desktop risk assessment exercise focused on potential aquaculture occupational health and safety (AOHS) hazards and risks associated with MMEs in Chile. The study reviews academic and grey literature, government regulations and MME reports and statistics to assess the scale and distribution of MMEs; identifies associated documented and potential health and safety hazards; and documents and assesses policy responses to MMEs in the Chilean context through the lens of health and safety. The paper documents the size and regional distribution of salmon MME occurrences in Chile from 2016 to 2022. It discusses AOHS hazards associated with MMEs such as exposure to hydrogen sulfide, drowning and diving-related illnesses and potential issues around accessing hospitals and hyperbaric chambers for workers in remote aquaculture regions, as well as exposure to antibiotics and antibiotic residues. Recent Chilean regulatory requirements around reporting and management of MMEs that have the potential to help reduce identified MME-related risks for workers are described and addressed. The "antenna effect" is one of the most important energy transfer modes in lanthanide light-emitting polymers. In this study, novel luminescent nanostructured coordination polymers (Eu–PCP) were synthesized in one step using Eu3+ as the central metal ion and 5,10,15,20-tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) as the organic ligand. The unique "antenna effect" observed between Eu3+ and TCPP leads to a substantial improvement in the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) emission efficiency. Eu–PCP exhibits good cathodic ECL characteristics. Additionally, Au@SnS2 nanosheets exhibit favorable electrical conductivity, biocompatibility, and a significant specific surface area. This makes them a suitable choice as substrate materials for the modification of electrode surfaces and capturing antigens. Being well known, the development of sensitive and rapid methods to detect chloramphenicol is essential for food safety. Based on this, we report a novel competitive electrochemiluminescence immunoassay to achieve ultra-sensitive and highly specific detection of chloramphenicol. The linear range was 0.0002–500 ng mL−1 and the detection limit was 0.09 pg mL−1. The residue of antibiotics and various pollutants has led to an urgent issue in environmental pollution control. In this study, we constructed an S-scheme P-TiO2@Zn-MOF heterojunction by self-assembling phosphonate-based MOFs on mesoporous phosphate-TiO2 beads. Compared to monomers, the P-TiO2@Zn-MOF2.0 heterojunction exhibits significantly higher photocatalytic activity for the photo-oxidative degradation of ciprofloxacin (97.2% in 60 min) and tetracyclic (TC) (94.5% in 100 min) and the photo-reduction of Cr(VI) (92.7% in 60 min) under simulated sunlight. Experimental results and calculations revealed the effective separation and transfer of photogenerated carriers at the P-TiO2@Zn-MOF2.0 S-scheme heterojunction interface, enabling the formation of highly active superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. Oxytetracycline (OCT) is a broad-spectrum antibiotic commonly used for broiler production to enhance growth and feeding efficacy. Concern has been expressed that the parent compounds of antibiotics such as OCT or their bioactive metabolites may be excreted through animal feces or urine with negative consequences for the environment when applied to agricultural lands. An integrated system involving a combination of thermophilic composting and vermicomposting using Eisenia fetida was investigated as a strategy for reducing the concentrations of oxytetracycline and its metabolites (4-epi-oxytetracycline [EOTC], α-apo-oxytetracycline [α-Apo-OTC] and β-apo-oxytetracycline [β-Apo-OTC]) in chicken manure. Treatments consisted of combinations of chicken manure and waste paper to produce waste mixtures with C: N ratios of 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 (T1, T2, T3, T4, T5 and T6, respectively). These were subjected to thermophilic composting for 20 days followed by vermicomposting with E. fetida for 7 weeks. The oxytetracycline concentration at the start of the experiment was in the range of 123.3-35.2 mg/kg, which reduced to 44-25.3 mg/kg after the thermophilic composting, and further reduced to 35.4-20.7 mg/kg at the end of the vermicomposting stage. The maximum overall percentage reduction of residual oxytetracycline in the final product was recorded in T3 (C:N ratio 40). The maximum percentage reduction of 84.3% was recorded in C: N ratio of 40 (T3) in which the metabolite degradation products were reduced to 3.1 mg/kg of 4-epi-oxytetracycline (EOTC), 3.9 mg/kg of α-apo-oxytetracycline (α-Apo-OTC) and 4 mg/kg of β-apo-oxytetracycline (β-Apo-OTC). In line with the development of industrial society, wastewater has caused multiple environmental problems. Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in water and wastewater are persistent, and for this reason they can cause serious problems for human health, animal health, and the whole environment. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to apply efficient methods for the treatment of wastewater that has a high concentration of organic compounds. Over recent years, the prescribed and non-prescribed consumption of antibiotics has increased significantly worldwide. Large quantities of antibiotics are discharged into wastewater because of their incomplete absorption by living organisms. However, even small concentrations present in aquatic environments represent a major risk to human health and environment protection. This paper presents the main advantages and disadvantages of advanced oxidation processes, and the current state and new perspectives in the field of environment protection. This study summarizes data from the most recent specialized scientific literature that focuses on the topic of advanced oxidation processes, thus bringing all these aspects to the attention of researchers in a single work that adds comments and interpretations related to the presented processes. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are often used in the treatment of different types of wastewater. AOPs are based on physicochemical processes that create significant structural changes in chemical species. The majority of antibiotics may be eliminated using physicochemical processes, such as photo-Fenton oxidation, photolysis, ozonation, electrooxidation, heterogeneous catalysis, and other bioprocesses. Background: This paper aims to estimate the prevalence of antibiotic use for diarrhea among under-five children (u5c) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) using data from 112 Demographic Health Surveys (DHS) conducted between 2006 and 2018. The focus is on understanding the extent of antibiotic usage for managing diarrhea, a condition characterized by frequent loose or watery bowel movements that can lead to severe dehydration. Methods and findings: A cross-sectional study design was employed in the DHS. The prevalence of antibiotic use for diarrhea among under-five children was estimated by analyzing DHS data from 2006 to 2018 and using the R statistical programming language. Out of a total of 12,69,944 children under five included in this study, 1,80,067 children had diarrhea and 19,502 children had bloody diarrhea. The overall prevalence of diarrhea estimated at ~14% (prevalence = 0.142; 95% CI = 0.141, 0.142). Among the children with diarrhea, 47,755 child received antibiotic treatment, resulting a prevalence of ~27% (prevalence = 0.27, 95% CI = 0.26, 0.27) globally. Central Asia had the highest prevalence of antibiotic use at ~55% (prevalence = (967/1748) = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.52, 0.59), followed by the Europe region with a prevalence of ~44% (prevalence = (5483/12502) = 0.44, 95% CI = 0.43, 0.45). In the South East and Central Asia region, DHS conducted between 2006 and 2018, showed the highest prevalence of antibiotic use in DHS 2007 (~44%), DHS 2012 (~49%), DHS 2016 (~40%) and DHS 2017 (~65%). The linear trend analysis showed an upward trend for using antibiotic of diarrhea in the South East and Central Asia region. Conclusions: The Central Asia region had the highest proportion of antibiotic use, with an estimated prevalence of ~55% (95% CI = 0.52, 0.59). The Europe region followed closely with a prevalence of ~44% (95% CI = 0.43, 0.45). Antibiotics are routinely used to treat and prevent infections in humans as well as in animals. Excessive use of antibiotics in animals, especially in poultry, accumulates residues in the meat and organs beyond legal limits. A large number of classes and types of antibiotics often used in the poultry sector raises problems in quantitative detection methodologies. These techniques must be economical, comply with the requirements of the international standard for maximum residue limits detection, and be sensitive, reproducible, and reliable. Given the complexity of the requirements that such a methodology must meet, the study presents the technological advances of modern technology such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS), Ultra-High Performance Liquid Chromatography (UHPLC) in the simultaneous detection of several antibiotic residues belonging to different classes. Highly sensitive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing not only depends on an active substrate with high density of hot spots, but also depends more on whether the molecules can effectively enter the hot spot region. In this paper, a new SERS detection method based on the nano nest model is developed to autonomously capture molecules into hot spots. The nano nest is composed of silver nanowires modified with gold nanoparticles (Ag NW@Au NPs), which not only form high density hot spots between particles or particles-wires, but also have a coupled electromagnetic field enhancement effect. The SERS detection method based nano nest actively traps molecules through the capillary stage, and makes the molecules move toward densely stacked small gaps (hot spots) by capillary action. The above method has been used to detect different kinds of molecules, such as pesticide residues, adenosine triphosphate in culture medium, and antibiotic residues in aquatic products. In addition, an in situ SERS monitoring of allergic reactions was also performed using nano nests with the feature of actively trapping molecules into the hot spots. In this paper, it was noted that different infectious diseases were affecting chicken in Tanzania and other countries including Newcastle (Prevalence 7-90% per flock), Infectious bursal disease (Prevalence 7-100% per flock), Fowl Cholera (Prevalence 1-60% per flock), and Fowl Typhoid (Prevalence 0-20% per flock). As a remedy, drugs such as Amprolium, oxytetracycline, and sulphanilamide were used for treatment which could prompt antibiotic residues in chicken products and by-products. The antibiotic residue was reported in meat, eggs, liver, and kidneys of the chicken which are considered edible to a human thus posing public health challenges. In this regard, there is a need to create awareness to the farmers on the proper use of the drugs. Poultry meat occupies an important place in the human diet, due to the fact that it is easily prepared and at low cost in the market compared to other sources of protein of animal origin, having nutritional and dietary characteristics. Currently, there is a consumer tendency to turn to meat obtained in a traditional system, to the detriment of that obtained in an industrial system. The motivation for this trend is represented by the suspicion of the presence of growth hormones and antibiotics in meat, the welfare and protection of birds, but also the impact of intensive farms on the environment. The traditional system is geared towards slow, open-air growth with late slaughter and discretionary feeding. The consumption of poultry products from free range or organic production systems has increased in recent years in various countries. Meat products from free range systems have been associated with improved flavor and high nutritional value by consumers, lower fat content and higher concentrations of vitamins and minerals in meat products. In addition, free-range broiler production systems can have a positive impact on animal welfare. This paper addresses the different aspects that influence the quality and safety of poultry meat obtained in an intensive system compared to the traditional one, such as the presence of microbial contamination with Salmonella and Campylobacter, the effects of thermal stress on the quality of the meat, the presence of pectoral myopathies, but also the presence of pesticide residues and antibiotics. The global increase in pharmaceutical consumption, driven by factors such as aging populations and chronic diseases, has raised concerns regarding the environmental impact of pharmaceutical contaminants. Europe, and more specifically Catalonia (Spain), exhibits high pharmaceutical consumption rates, potentially exacerbating environmental contamination. Pharmaceuticals enter rivers through various pathways, persisting after wastewater treatment plants and posing risks to aquatic organisms and human health. Llobregat and Besòs Rivers in Catalonia, crucial water sources, demonstrate detectable pharmaceutical levels, necessitating comprehensive analysis. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) proves effective in detecting pharmaceutical residues, facilitating their risk assessment. This paper reviews the occurrence, fate, and risks associated with 78 pharmaceuticals and metabolite in Llobregat and Besòs Rivers, using LC–MS/MS for analysis. Endometritis is a common postpartum disease in cows. It delays uterine involution and impairs normal physiological function. This can result in long‐term or even lifelong infertility and cause significant losses to the dairy farming industry. Traditional treatments like antibiotics possess certain shortcomings, such as antibiotic residues, the abuse of antibiotics, and increased antimicrobial resistance of pathogens. Alternative treatment strategies are needed to minimize the utilization of antibiotics in dairy production. As an essential trace element in animals, selenium (Se) plays a vital role in regulating immune function, the inflammatory response, and oxidative stress, affecting the speed and completeness of tissue repair. This paper reviewed previous studies to analyse the potential of Se in the prevention and treatment of bovine endometritis, aiming to provide a new direction to increase production capacity in the future. Lanthanum-modified mesoporous graphite nitride carbon composites (La-g-C3N4) were synthesized using a thermal shrinkage polymerization method. The samples underwent characterization through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Brunauer–Emmet–Teller (BET) analysis. The results revealed that the La30-g-C3N4 sample displayed a more porous layered morphology with a uniform pore structure. The BET surface area of the sample was found to be 38.6 m2 g−1, which is 5.8 times higher than that of the undoped sample g-C3N4. The sample exhibited a type IV isotherm, indicating its mesoporous nature with a pore size distribution ranging from 3 to 20 nm. The application of these materials was investigated for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) and acidic fuchsin (AF) in simulated wastewater. The results demonstrated that the La30-g-C3N4 sample exhibited rapid and efficient degradation, along with excellent adsorption capacity for both TC and AF. Within 5 minutes, the degradation efficiency of the La30-g-C3N4 sample for TC and AF was measured to be 83.1% and 74.1%, respectively, with corresponding adsorption capacities of 63.9 mg g−1 and 129.4 mg g−1. The kinetic and thermodynamic analysis of the adsorption process revealed that the adsorption of TC and AF by La30-g-C3N4 followed the quasi-second-order kinetics and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model, indicating a predominantly single-layer chemical adsorption process. The presence of antibiotics in aquatic systems poses a significant risk to both the ecological balance and human health. To address this issue, the development of advanced photocatalytic materials capable of efficiently treating antibiotic-contaminated wastewater is imperative. In this investigation, we successfully synthesized nitrogen–phosphorus co-doped carbon dots (NPCDs) modified (001) TiO2/Ti3C2Tx composites via a series of uncomplicated hydrothermal reactions, ensuring visible light responsivity. Comprehensive characterization of the composite photocatalysts was conducted using XRD, FT-IR, N2 adsorption, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-Vis DRS, and PL techniques. Subsequently, the photocatalytic performance was assessed through the degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) and ceftiofur sodium solutions under visible light irradiation. The optimized composites exhibited remarkable photocatalytic degradation efficiencies of 93.4% and 75.5% for TC and ceftiofur sodium, respectively, under visible light, following quasi-primary kinetic behavior. Reactive free radical capture experiments highlighted the predominant roles of ˙O2− and ˙OH species in the photocatalytic degradation process. Additionally, we proposed plausible mechanisms governing photocatalytic degradation based on the obtained results. The heightened photocatalytic reactivity arises from the efficient transfer of photogenerated electrons through the NPCDs → TiO2 →Ti3C2Tx pathway, a mechanism that effectively facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. As a result, that is critical to creating a practical approach for detecting leftover antibiotics in a timely and sensitive manner. This research utilize the water instability of MOFs, and uses the zinc-based metal–organic framework of tetra (4-carboxyphenyl) ethylene (Zn-TCPE) as the sensing unit to create a new fluorescence sensing platform based on multiple colorimetric responses for ultra-fast and sensitive detection of tobramycin. Due to poor water stability, Zn-TCPE with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) would break into untidy pieces following immersion in aqueous solution. More importantly, the fluorescence of the Zn-TCPE aqueous solution was dimmed because the crystal framework of the Zn-TCPE was destroyed by the coordination of water molecules, causing the AIE-active organic linkers (H 4 TCPE) to undergo non-radiative emission motion, implying underlying mechanism research in the fluorescence "turn-off-on" mode. Because hydrophilic functional groups such as amino and hydroxyl can coordinate with metal ions, the Zn-TCPE aqueous solution showed great sensitivity for the response of amino, hydroxyl, and ether groups. The coordinated coordination of amino, hydroxyl, and ether groups with Zn2+ explains the reaction mechanism, culminating in the full destruction of Zn-TCPE. With the crystal structure collapse of Zn-TCPE, the AIE organic linkers are freed and then reassemble to form emissive aggregates with increased fluorescence. Because aminoglycoside (AG) antibiotics have hydrophilic functional groups such as amino, hydroxyl, and ether groups, they are employed as a molecular model for study. In recent years, organic pollutants have become a global problem due to their negative impact on human health and the environment. Photocatalysis is one of the most promising methods for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater, and oxide semiconductor materials have proven to be among the best in this regard. This paper presents the evolution of the development of metal oxide nanostructures (MONs) as photocatalysts for ciprofloxacin degradation. It begins with an overview of the role of these materials in photocatalysis; then, it discusses methods of obtaining them. Then, a detailed review of the most important oxide semiconductors (ZnO, TiO2, CuO, etc.) and alternatives for improving their photocatalytic performance is provided. Finally, a study of the degradation of ciprofloxacin in the presence of oxide semiconductor materials and the main factors affecting photocatalytic degradation is carried out. It is well known that antibiotics (in this case, ciprofloxacin) are toxic and non-biodegradable, which can pose a threat to the environment and human health.
