Recognising the relevance of learning Geometry, and in particular 3D Geometry, this study aims to discuss the contributions that digital technology and paper and pencil approaches can bring to students' learning. We seek, therefore, to identify the differences between the two approaches, and specifically: What factors are relevant in one and the other approach? What does one approach facilitate over the other? A quantitative and a qualitative and interpretive methodology was adopted, and based on a didactic intervention, the students' resolutions of the proposed tasks were analysed. The results obtained show that the experience and prior knowledge of the students with each of the solids involved seems to be decisive in the approach with paper and pencil. However, technology emerges as an enhancing resource when prior knowledge is more fragile. The study also shows differences between the representations supported by the two resources, suggesting the mobilisation of different knowledge by the students in relation to each of the resources.

This study aims at understanding the role of the tools chosen throughout the processes of solving a non-routine mathematical problem and communicating its solution. In assuming that problem-solving is a synchronous activity of mathematization and expression of mathematical thinking we take our proposed Mathematical Problem Solving with Technology (MPST) model to analyze the processes of solving-and-expressing-problems. Resorting to qualitative methods for data collection and analysis, we report on the case of an 8th grader working on a covariation problem to examine the role that paper-and-pencil and digital tools play in the development of a conceptual model of the situation. We found that the resources used throughout the solving-and-expressing activity influenced the depth of the conceptual model developed, within a process of progressive mathematization. Whereas paper-and-pencil led to the emergence of a conceptual model based on exploring particular cases, the digital transformation of the solution was triggered by the process of communicating its mathematical justification and expanded the previous model. Moreover, the complexity of this activity is evidenced by its multiple sequences of processes. Finally, the integration process seems crucial as the concomitant use of technological and mathematical resources precedes major advancements in the expansion of the conceptual model.

Gender inequality is strongly linked with poor performance in science and mathematics for female students in secondary schools owing to socio-economic and cultural issues as well as learning strategies. According to the Certificate of Secondary Education Examination results of 2021 in Tanzania, the failure rate for female students was higher than that for male students, and such failure in chemistry was associated with inadequate knowledge about the tested concepts, failure to identify the requirements of the respective questions and lack of adequate mathematical skills. Real practical sessions are integral parts of chemistry to enhance the learning environments for both female and male students. However, the real laboratory practices especially for chemistry are challenged with the costs of the construction of physical laboratory infrastructure and reagents, and the time-consuming and physical demands on personnel during real practical sessions. Thus, this study explores gender-based effects of the chemistry virtual laboratory against a paper-based approach towards a real chemistry practical in Tanzanian secondary schools. The results indicate that the combined exposures of virtual laboratory and paper-based practicals improve real practical performance for both female and male students. Moreover, the performance of real practical practices progressively improved for female students when they were first exposed to the virtual laboratory and then the paper-based practical. Such improvements can be associated with the virtual laboratory providing interactive learning environments which support female students to connect and engage.

The aim of this research is to advance in the teaching-learning process of representing quadratic functions, both with pencil and paper and with a technological tool. For this purpose, a didactic experience is presented. Firstly, it is explained in the traditional way how to graph a quadratic function; secondly, students are introduced to the GeoGebra software. It provides a categorization of the different errors and difficulties of the students, the comparison between a graphic representation with paper and pencil and a representation with GeoGebra, and the improvement with the technological tool.

The TPACK model is an essential framework for appropriately integrating technology in the classroom. The present study aimed to categorize and establish the main research findings around TPACK between 2017 and 2022, specifically in practicing teachers at the secondary education level. A systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA statement was conducted. The search for papers was carried out in the Scopus, Web of Science, Sage Journal, and SciELO databases in September 2022. 37 articles were selected for review. The review of the studies made it possible to establish that the papers were mainly grouped into two categories: the first related to teachers' perception of TPACK, which includes research with self-perception questionnaires, case studies and relationships of self-perception with other variables such as barriers to technology integration in the classroom, pedagogical beliefs, and online education; and the second to developing training courses based on TPACK, complemented with self-perception questionnaires in the form of pretest-posts, classroom observations, and interviews. The results of the first category are dissimilar since TPACK levels differ from one study to another in variables such as gender and teaching experience. From the second, it is established that teacher professional development courses favor improving technological integration in the classroom.

Integrating science learning with game experience and physical manipulatives not only overcomes the rigidity of traditional teaching, but also makes the learning experience pleasant for students and improves their science inquiry ability. Today, with the popularization of mobile devices and technology, both the value and feasibility of gamified science learning have increased significantly. However, several studies showed that students might get lost or feel bored during science inquiry. To let students enjoy the science inquiry process and improve their science process skills, the researchers combined mobile technology, game design elements, and science inquiry and designed the gamified science inquiry activity "we are aircraft designers". Here, students designed and manipulated a smartphone-controlled paper airplane by mobile devices connected via Bluetooth. To investigate the effects of the gamified science inquiry activity, the flow state and science process skills of 71 students of a junior high school in China were explored. The proposed gamified science inquiry activity enhanced flow and science process skills of students with high and middle level flow. No differences were found on flow and science process skills between males and females. Based on these results, the guidelines for the design of a gamified science inquiry activity are discussed.

Virtual reality software has evolved to create ever more realistic virtual environments. Sophisticated virtual education laboratory experiments are now possible. Some educators and researchers question the value of hands-on laboratories relative to virtual laboratories. Researchers have investigated students' acceptance of virtual laboratories and the relative effectiveness of virtual laboratories compared to traditional hands-on laboratories. Research results indicated that students' attitudes toward virtual laboratory experiments are positive, and researchers found virtual laboratory experiments to be as effective as or more effective than traditional hands-on laboratories. However, researchers have not measured simulated laboratory effectiveness for all standard education laboratory goals. Simulated laboratory technology will be part of science education, but how to introduce laboratory simulations and the appropriate role for simulated laboratories remains a subject of debate. Are virtual laboratory experiments acceptable substitutes for hands-on laboratories in secondary education? To explore this question, laboratory goals and effectiveness criteria must be defined and measured for secondary education. This paper explores the goals and effectiveness of virtual and hands-on education laboratories. This paper also outlines the arguments for and against the replacement of traditional hands-on labs with simulated laboratories in secondary science education and makes a case for using laboratory simulations to supplement rather than replace traditional hands-on laboratories.

Recently, electronic books (e-books) have become prevalent amongst the general population, as well as students, owing to their advantages over traditional books. In South Africa, a number of schools have integrated tablets into the classroom with the promise of replacing traditional books. In order to realise the potential of e-books and their associated devices within an academic context, where reading speed and comprehension are critical for academic performance and personal growth, the effectiveness of reading from a tablet screen should be evaluated. To achieve this objective, a quasi-experimental within subjects design was employed in order to compare the reading speed and comprehension performance of 68 students. The results of this study indicate the majority of participants read faster on an iPad, which is in contrast to previous studies that have found reading from tablets to be slower. It was also found that comprehension scores did not differ significantly between the two media. For students, these results provide evidence that tablets and e-books are suitable tools for reading and learning, and therefore, can be used for academic work. For educators, e-books can be introduced without concern that reading performance and comprehension will be hindered.

Various studies have indicated that incorporating origami activities into a geometry lesson can promote elementary and middle school students' mathematical reasoning, enhance their ability to use precise mathematical terminologies, and increase their communication skills. The authors wondered if origami activities have a place in high school geometry. They designed a series of one-straight-cut activities aimed at deepening high school students' essential understanding of geometry; developing their communication skills by producing, interpreting, and explaining diagrams; and thinking about questions embedded into PowerPoint® slides and shown in activity sheets. Links to the one-straight-cut activity sheets, PowerPoint slides and videos are accessible to classroom teachers through the links included in the article. The authors begin by presenting the introductory tasks they used before illustrating one-straight-cut heart activities to preservice teachers. Then they share how these activities planned and implemented by co-authors Dr. Ko and preservice teacher Holden supported their preservice teachers to work collaboratively, think critically, and communicate effectively, along with representative dialogues and reflections from preservice teachers Caroline, (co-author) Devon W. Maxwell, Elisa, (co-author) Runge, and Kevin (first names only indicate pseudonyms). Although the implementation of their activities was conducted with preservice teachers, similar results would be true in the high school setting.

The importance of skills for vocational high school graduates in entering the workforce, facing competition, and increasing productivity, in accordance with the current industry needs, cannot be overstated. E-learning has become one of the platforms that vocational high schools can utilize to assist students in acquiring the necessary skills such as literacy, communication, collaboration and critical thinking as needed in the 21st century. However, the issue lies in determining the type of e-learning that can enhance students' learning outcomes and skills. This paper aims to present an analysis and description of the implementation of different types of e-learning in vocational high school education. The research adopts a systematic literature review approach, incorporating research questions: i) what types of e-learning are being used? ii) what are the impacts of implementing e-learning in vocational high schools? and iii) what competencies can be enhanced through the implementation of e-learning. The subject of this research is articles that have been published in Scopus and Google Scholar-indexed journals. The article selection technique employed the PRISMA method, which successfully obtained 35 articles out of the 2,093 articles. The review results indicate that there are many variations in the utilization of e-learning formats in schools. Digital learning media is one type of e-learning that is often used by teachers, although there are many other types such as e-modules, Learning Management System, multimedia, and others. In addition, the research findings showed that through e-learning, many 21st-century skills, such as literacy and critical thinking abilities can be improved. The findings further showed that e-learning contributes to the improvement of learning outcomes in psychomotor and cognitive aspects. These research findings are expected to serve as a basis for vocational school teachers to confidently utilize e-learning in their teaching activities.

This paper assessed teachers' perceived role and limitations on using ICT as a pedagogical tool in enhancing English language fluency. The study employed a descriptive case study design in which interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis were used to collect data. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively through recording the data for thematic procedures. It was found that teachers perceived ICT as an important pedagogical tool for enhancing grammar, vocabulary and accurate pronunciation. However, the use of ICT for teaching English language was limited due to poor ICT infrastructures, insufficient training, teachers' readiness and unclear policies. The study recommends the government to make a critical investment in ICT facilities and ensure high internet connectivity in secondary schools. A practical training for English teachers on the adoption and integration of ICT through virtual platforms would certainly improve the practice.

Ensuring equity in education is a goal for sustainable development. Among the factors that hinder equity, socioeconomic status (SES) has the highest impact on learning Mathematics. This paper addresses the issue of equity at the secondary school level by proposing an approach based on adopting automatic formative assessment (AFA). Carefully designed mathematical activities with interactive feedback were experimented with a sample of 299 students of grade 8 for a school year. A control group of 257 students learned the same topics using traditional methodologies. Part of the sample belonged to low SES. The learning achievement was assessed through pre-and post-tests to understand if the adoption of AFA impacted learning and whether the results depended on the students' SES. The results show a positive effect of the experimentation (effect size: 0.42). Moreover, the effect size of the experimentation restricted to the low-SES group is high (0.77). In the treatment group, the results do not depend on SES, while in the control group, they do, suggesting that AFA is an equitable approach while traditional instruction risks perpetuating inequalities.

STEM education is on demand more than ever as the workforce relies on 21st century skills and STEM disciplines. This paper presents a framework (IMS-TEAM) for integration of mathematics and science with the use of technology and modeling in an authentic context. The activity based on this framework is designed for and implemented with forty-four 8th grade students in Turkey. The study was conducted to investigate the impact of the activity as well as the IMS-TEAM framework. A qualitative methodology was utilized. Data analysis revealed that different components of our conceptual framework fostered the integration of mathematics and science affecting the nature of students' engagement with the activity. Different frameworks are required to be adapted to different environments with the consideration of learners and teachers. Future research investigating the effectiveness of IMS-TEAM framework adapted to different content and disciplines would provide more evidence on the effectiveness of the framework.

In this study I examine the issue of how to support students' coordination of computer algebra systems (CAS) and paper-and-pencil in solving mathematics problems. Together with a classroom teacher I designed and conducted a collaborative teaching experiment in a ninth-grade algebra classroom to understand how to support students' coordination of tools. I introduce a predict-act-reflect-reconcile activity structure for coordinating CAS and paper-and-pencil in solving problems involving linear expressions and equations and adopt this as an analytic lens to examine the role of curriculum materials on impacting students' learning. Findings suggest the activity structure of predict-act-reflect-reconcile is a potentially fruitful starting point for coordinating CAS and paper-and-pencil in classroom activity, but not sufficient on its own as a task design principle without focused classroom discussion and support during the enacted curriculum. This research points to the importance of teaching students how to communicate about their process of using multiple tools while solving problems, especially the mathematical thinking that students engage in while reconciling differences across tool-based representations.

Digital task design is an important issue when integrating technology into mathematics education. However, existing frameworks often are not fine-grained enough for supporting teachers in designing tasks or they only focus on geometric topics. In this paper, we share a case study as the first cycle of our design-based research study that aims to extend and adapt the well-known Dynamic Geometry Task Analysis framework for analyzing further digital materials. The adapted framework is named Digital Task Analysis (DTA) model and can be utilized to analyze, modify, and design digital materials from other mathematical topics. The model focuses on supporting teachers in integrating two essential aspects within digital materials, namely creating cognitively stimulating tasks and exploiting added value of technology. In this paper, we present the first analyses of three cases representing digital materials including visualizations addressing lower secondary mathematics following the DTA model. The results show that the presented DTA model is suitable to analyze such digital materials and has the potential to support teachers in designing, assessing, and modifying digital tasks that support learners in focusing their attention on mathematically relevant aspects of digital resources, and in deepening their awareness of how to formulate targeted tasks for learners.

In a digital society, teachers are required to carry out policy directives on both core knowledge and more vaguely described cross-curricular competences, one being digital competence. This paper reports on the findings of a study in which 41 teachers from three lower secondary schools in Sweden engaged in focus group interviews where they participated in sensemaking processes on students' digital competence. The questions targeted what the teachers knew of their students' digital experiences and how to facilitate and further develop these students' digital competence. Based on the focus group interviews, four themes were identified: "critical awareness," "tool management," "creativity," and "avoidance of digital usage." Absent were themes related to democratic digital citizenship. The paper discusses the importance of moving away from a one-sided focus on individual teachers' professional digital competence in favour of focusing on how school organizations can negotiate and facilitate students' digital competence in local situ. Otherwise, there is a risk of overlooking students' cross-curricular digital competence and digital citizenship. This paper is a starting point for further research on how school as an organization can support teachers in facilitating various areas of students' digital competence in a digital society.

Background: Augmented reality (AR) is receiving increasing interest as a tool to create an interactive and motivating learning environment. Yet, it is unclear how instructional support affects performance in AR. Objectives: This study sought to explore how varying the instructional support in AR can affect performance-related behaviours of students with low cognitive abilities during assembly work. Methods: A total of 90 Belgian secondary school students repeatedly executed four different realistic assembly tasks. Three levels of instructional support (low, medium, and high) in AR as well as a control condition with paper instructions with a high level of detail were systematically varied across tasks and participants. Results and Conclusions: Multilevel regression analyses showed that AR instructions yielded lower assembly times and a lower perceived physical effort than paper instructions. Additionally, participants perceived tasks as less complex when given AR instructions with a high or a medium level of detail than when given a low level of detail. No effects of instructional support were established for other performance-related behaviours, namely necessary assistance, error-making, cognitive load, competence frustration, and stress. Effect sizes were small, at least among the instructional support conditions studied, yielding a limited base for adaptivity. Presumably, tailoring the instructional support in AR is only beneficial for highly complex tasks. The results might be useful for the design and implementation of AR in educational settings.

In recent years, the emerging trend of mobile learning (hereinafter "m-learning") has obtained increasing attention from educators and higher popularity among students worldwide. Partly due to its short history, there seems to be a lack of comprehensive and in-depth understanding on the distinctiveness of m-learning. It is maintained in this paper that m-learning should be described and researched in three intertwined aspects: the mobility of devices, learners and materials. The multi-faceted mobility may help achieve highly portable and genuinely personal learning, which distinguishes m-learning from other forms of technology-enhanced education. This paper also reports an empirical study on m-learning for academic English. With a total of 60 participants (and six in the pilot study) over three progressive phases, the data obtained from mixed methods of automatic logging, questionnaire and interview were used to assess multidimensional learner engagement in the self-directed process of m-learning. The triangulated data can reflect and highlight some known features of m-learning, and they may also imply learners' expectations towards m-learning. Based on the literature review and data analysis, this paper aims to contribute to the (re)conceptualisation of "m-learning" and also provide some technical and pedagogical implications on future and further development of m-learning.

Maker education provides the perfect context for young learners to develop 21st-century skills. However, research is inconclusive on how these skills could be assessed. Namely, the complex nature of 21st-century skills requires different types of assessments, not necessarily relying on paper-and-pencil or multiple-choice tests, but rather drawing on the learners' perspective in the form of self-assessment and reflection. Prior studies highlighted several challenges of situating self-assessment in makerspace contexts, such as the lack of dedicated technology for documentation, distractions caused by noise or group work, and the lack of skills and motivation to practice self-assessment. This paper presents an exploratory case study aimed at an in-depth investigation of the use of a digital self-assessment tool of 21st-century skills in makerspace contexts. The authors converged qualitative data collected mainly from interviews with teachers and students. Researcher observations and tool log files (e.g., student work in the digital tool) were used as triangulation sources. Although challenges emerged, the study presents encouraging findings regarding the use of the digital tool for raising students' awareness of their development of 21st-century skills and engaging them in self-assessment and reflection. The results of the study provide rich insights to guide future research on the topic.

The Internet of Things is shifting the way people interact with each other, the way people interact with objects, and the way objects interact with each other. This reality is creating a new paradigm, where the world becomes more interconnected. In the field of Education, we are at the beginning of understanding the profound transformation that IoT can bring to teaching and learning, namely the exploitation of these technologies as a teaching resource. Despite different approaches, there seems to be a consensus regarding its transformative potential, especially when we think about the concept of hypersituation. This paper presents the main results relating to the teachers' perception of an IoT-based learning environment supported by a low-cost and open-source IoT device and a set of didactic guides to approach curricular contents of the 7th grade in Portugal. Regarding the organization of the paper, firstly an introductory contextualization is presented, where IoT challenges and potentialities in education are highlighted. After that, we present the followed methodology during the research described. Finally, the results and conclusions, where the perceptions of the involved teachers, regarding the use of IoT technologies in the described contexts are shown and explained.

This research focuses on "BioScientist," a digital game-based, inquiry-based learning program embedded in the biology curriculum that develops inquiry skills in 8th-grade students. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate a combination of elements of digital game-based learning (DGBL) with inquiry-based learning (IBL) through "BioScientist" and to report on its implementation. We examined whether inquiry skills and biology learning motivation change due to "BioScientist." A total of 257 eighth graders participated in the research (N[subscript exp.] = 132, N[subscript control] = 125). Students in the experimental group used "BioScientist" at home and in the classroom. The teachers in the control group did not change their teaching practices. Students' inquiry skills were measured using the Inquiry Skills Test, and their biology learning motivation was measured using the Biology Motivation Questionnaire II. The experimental group and teachers were asked to evaluate "BioScientist." The results indicated "BioScientist" digital game is suitable for developing inquiry skills, with the effect size being close to medium (Cohen's d = 0.46). However, biology learning motivation was not developed. Student feedback on the "BioScientist" game and its use for learning is favourable. Based on the teachers' responses, "BioScientist" can be used well in teaching biology. This research provides evidence that combining elements of digital game-based and inquiry-based learning is effective in developing inquiry skills. Part of the research community that has followed the Early Algebra paradigm is currently delimiting the differences between arithmetic thinking and algebraic thinking. This trend could prevent new research approaches to the problem of learning algebra, hiding the importance of considering an arithmetico-algebraic thinking, a new approach which underpins the construction of a cognitive structure that links both types of thinking. This paper proposes a theoretical and practical framework for a learning approach that supports the construction of a cognitive structure which fosters arithmetico-algebraic thinking at the beginning of secondary school by means of cultural and technological activities relating to polygonal numbers.
