Aim: This study was conducted to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Clinical Interpersonal Reactivity Index, an instrument to assess nurses' empathy. Background: A practical empathic approach is valuable for planning nursing interventions suitable for the patient's conditions and needs and increasing patient satisfaction. Design: This is a methodological study. Methods: The study was carried out at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Training and Research Hospital, recruiting a total of 358 nurses between January and February 2023. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were used to determine and validate the factor structure of the Clinical Interpersonal Reactivity Index. Results: The exploratory factor analysis extracted three factors. According to the confirmatory factor analysis, all goodness of fit measures were within acceptable limits. Cronbach's α values were 0.89 for the total scale with 17 items and between 0.73 and 0.81 for the factors. In test–retest analyses, all intra‐class correlation coefficients were higher than 0.7, and the correlations between the first and second applications of the scale were between 0.61 and 0.73. Conclusion: The Turkish version of the Clinical Interpersonal Reactivity Index can be applied as a valid and reliable measurement tool to evaluate empathy in Turkish nurses. In order for nurses to provide adequate care and help to their patients, their empathy skills should be developed at the desired level, and they should have an empathetic disposition.Numerous empathy scales have been developed to measure empathy, a crucial element in interpersonal relationships, but since these scales have an excessive number of items and explanatory texts, their evaluation takes a long time. The Clinical Interpersonal Reactivity Index, which was originally developed in English, has been designed so that nurses can quickly assess their empathic abilities and perspectives reflecting their respective helping actions. Background Most women experience breastfeeding problems and need changes due to postpartum physical symptoms and low breastfeeding self-efficacy. Methods Postpartum home care and e-mobile training/consultancy has been introduced to address this issue. This study was conducted as a randomized controlled interventional study. The sample of the study consisted of 75 (home care group = 25, control group = 25, e-mobile training/consultancy group = 25) women who met the sample selection criteria, agreed to participate in the study, and were hospitalized in the postpartum ward of a City Hospital. Data were collected through the Personal Information Form, the Postpartum Physical Symptom Severity Scale and the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale (BSES). Results In all postpartum stages, a statistically significant difference was detected between the home care, e-mobile training/consultancy and control group women in terms of the Postpartum Physical Symptoms Severity Scale and BSES total mean scores (P  < .05). Interviews showed that the home care group had the lowest Postpartum Physical Symptom Severity Scale total mean scores and the highest BSES total mean scores (P  < .05). Postpartum home visits and e-mobile training/consultancy should be considered a routine part of postpartum care. It is effective in reducing postpartum physical symptoms and increasing breastfeeding self-efficacy. Conclusıon In line with the results of this study, the use of home care and e-mobile training/consultancy is recommended to decrease physical symptoms and increase breastfeeding self-efficacy. Migration-related risk factors may impact the association between coping strategies, resilience, and identity development, one of the fundamental developmental tasks in adolescence. We examined the relationship between resilience and coping strategies in immigrant and non-immigrant adolescents' identity development. On a sample of Turkish adolescents (n = 399, 50.9% girls), we conducted six hierarchical regression models to predict identity dimensions from resilience and coping strategies. For both immigrants and non-immigrants, seeking social support predicted a more mature and successful identity while avoidance predicted less reconsideration of commitment. For non-immigrants, seeking social support and avoidance was associated with in-depth exploration whereas for immigrants, only seeking social support was linked to in-depth exploration. Objective: The aims of this study were to determine the amount of smoking, the presence of back pain and the severity of pain, and to examine whether there was a relationship between smoking and back pain. Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 100 randomly selected students who were educated at university and had back pain. In individuals, a 22-question questionnaire and 21-question Beck Depression Scale were used, questioning parameters such as sociodemographic characteristics, physical activity levels, previous health problems, smoking status, as well as pain assessment tests. The results were analyzed by appropriate statistical methods. Results: Morning back pain was found to be higher in smokers compared to nonsmokers. (p <.05) BECK Depression Scale scores of smokers were found to be significantly different compared to nonsmokers (p =.00). In addition, it was observed that smokers needed more psychological medical support than nonsmokers (p =.00). Conclusions: This study revealed that although some significant results were found between smoking and some factors that cause back pain, there was no significant difference between smokers and nonsmokers. Background: Medical students are potential role models for the community in tobacco control. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence and dynamics of tobacco smoking among their grades. Methods: A questionnaire prepared in cooperation with the "World Health Organization" was completed online by 697 medical students in 2020 as a randomized cross-sectional study covering all medical school grades. Results: The prevalence of smoking among pre-grade 1 students was 3.3%, while it was 23% in grade-6. The highest prevalence was 31% in grade-2. Of the 135 current smokers, 43% smoked their first cigarette in medical school. "Having smoker best friends" was the most critical factor in starting smoking. Of current smokers, 59.3% want to quit. Only 20.7% of students who tried to quit smoking received professional help. Students took only a 1-hour lecture on tobacco control in the first two years. Conclusion: While there was almost no smoking in pre-grade 1, the high prevalence seen in grade-2 indicates that psychosocial support mechanisms and tobacco control lectures should be developed to prevent students. University administrations should implement adequate programs and increase awareness that will lead to a reduction in diseases in the student population and thus in the general population. Objective: Inflamatory processes play an important role in the etiology of psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study was to evaluate inflammatory complete blood count (CBC) parameters in substance use disorder (SUD). Methods: The study included 90 patients with SUD and 90 healthy controls (HC). The Student t-test was used to compare CBC parameters between the groups. The Kruskal – Wallis test was used to compare the data on the basis of substance types. Results: Leukocyte, lymphocyte, and monocyte levels were higher in SUD group than HC. Leukocyte and neutrophil levels of patients with opioid use disorder (OUD) were higher than HC. Platelet levels and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and systemic immune inflammation index values were higher in patients with OUD than in patients with non-opioid substance use disorder (nOUD). Moreover, lymphocyte and monocyte levels were higher in patients with nOUD than in HC. Monocyte levels were increased in patients with cannabinoid use disorder compared to HC. Conclusion: The results suggested that inflammatory CBC parameters play an important role in the etiology of SUD according to type of substance. Objective This study was designed to compare thiol/disulfide and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels between psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and healthy controls and evaluate the correlation between these molecules and the disease activity scores used in PsA. Methods A total of 63 PsA patients and 49 healthy volunteers were included in the study. Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI), modified disease activity score 28 (DAS28), and Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Functional Index (BASFI) scores were used as disease activity indices for PsA patients. Calculations of native thiol (-SH), disulfide (-SS), and total thiol (-SH+-SS) molecules were made by the automatic spectrophotometric method, and the albumin cobalt binding test was used to measure IMA levels. Results In the PsA group, -SS/-SH and -SS/(-SH+-SS) levels were higher and -SH/(-SH+-SS) levels were lower than in controls. In the linear regression analysis, a significant correlation relationship was detected between DAS28-erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and -SS/(-SH+-SS) (β = 0.795, CI 95%, 0.196-1.395; P =.010), -SH/(-SH+-SS) (β = -0.475, CI 95%, 0.114-0.836; P =.010) and IMA (β = 3.932, CI 95%, 0.859-7.005; P =.013). Additionally, a significant correlation was detected between IMA and BASDAI and BASFI. Conclusion In PsA, thiol/disulfide homeostasis has shifted in favor of disulfide as an oxidative indicator. Purpose: The aim of this study is to investigate the age-related changes of the Contralateral Acoustic Reflex Suppression (CARS) test in individuals with normal hearing and to provide age-related normal values. Method: The study included 66 individuals aged 18-65 years. The participants were divided into three age groups, respectively, 18-30 years, 31-45 years, and 46--65 years. Acoustic reflex threshold and acoustic reflex amplitude measurements were performed at frequencies of 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz in the presence and absence of suppressive noise from the contralateral ear. Results: In the comparison of suppression amounts according to age groups, the highest suppression amount at all frequencies was observed in the 18-30 years age group. Conclusions: It is known that changes in the function of the efferent hearing system occur due to aging. The purpose of this study was to assess the awareness and knowledge of professional team sport athletes about ACL injuries, injury prevention programs, and the return to sports after ACL injuries. A total of 419 athletes representing soccer, basketball, volleyball and handball sports were included in the study. We utilized a 15-item self-report survey to assess the awareness of athletes about ACL injury, ACL injury prevention program, and return to sport after ACL injuries. Male and soccer players participated in prevention programs more than female athletes (p = 0.001). Participation in prevention programs was significantly higher in the ≥ 18 years old group than in the < 18 years old group (p = 0.040). Participants who were informed about ACL injuries were 8.4 times more likely to participate in the ACL injuries prevention program than others (OR: 8.38, 95% CI: 3.823–18.376, p < 0.001). The majority of participants believed that return to sport after ACL injury takes 6 months and 81.4% of them thought that it is not possible to do sport without an ACL. This study revealed that the awareness and performance of ACL prevention training programs among professional team sport athletes were insufficient. The athletes' knowledge regarding return to sports after ACL injuries was also inadequate. Improving athletes' knowledge of ACL injuries may lead to increased participation in ACL injury prevention programs. Thus, the provision of tailored educational interventions to athletes could potentially enhance their awareness and understanding of ACL injuries, consequently contributing towards the prevention of such injuries. Mother–child memory conversations are a nuanced and important factor in children's memory development. The current study focuses on maternal characteristics that are related to individual differences in maternal elaborative style. It also examines the role of maternal elaborative style in children's elaborativeness in the context of reminiscing and recounting. Two hundred and nine Turkish mothers (Mage= 36.32, SD = 4.99) and their 5- to 6-year-olds (Mage in months = 66.88, SD = 4.04) (110 girls, 99 boys) participated in the current study. Results revealed that maternal individuation and balanced self-construal type predicted maternal elaborativeness, which in turn predicted child elaborativeness in reminiscing and recounting. Yet, such a relation was not observed for maternal attachment styles or sensitivity. BACKGROUND: The Modified Early Obstetric Warning System (MEOWS) is a score-based or color-coded system that detects changes in physiological parameters and enables earlier diagnosis and care of worsening obstetric patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the tool's performance and contribute to its use in Türkiye by translating MEOWS into Turkish. METHODS: This prospective and descriptive study, approved by the local ethics committee, included 350 obstetric in-patients who gave birth at Samsun Training and Research Hospital, Gynecology and Children's Hospital between April and August 2022. The study involved patients with a gestational week greater than 28 weeks and up to six weeks postpartum. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 28.9±5.9 (18-40) years, with trigger values occurring in 34.6% (n=121) and morbidity occurring in 30.9% (n=108) of the cases. The most common trigger among the individual physiological indicators was high systolic blood pressure (28.3%). When the performance of MEOWS was evaluated, a statistically significant correlation was found between trigger and morbidity (Kappa=0.605; p<0.001). The sensitivity of MEOWS in estimating morbidity was 77.78% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 68.76-85.21%), specificity was 84.71% (95% CI: 79.55-89.00%), Positive Predictive Value (PPV) was 69.42% (95% CI: 62.40-75.64%), Negative Predictive Value (NPV) was 89.52% (95% CI: 85.67-92.43%), and accuracy was 82.57% (95% CI: 78.18-86.40%). CONCLUSION: MEOWS was found to be an effective screening tool for predicting morbidity in this study and performs well in Turkish with sufficient sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Background and Objectives: There is no standardised approach to toilet training in children. This study aimed to determine the factors affecting the duration of toilet training in children aged 0–5 years and to develop a tool to assess the child's readiness to start toilet training. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 409 children aged 0–5 years. Social, economic, behavioural, and developmental characteristics that are effective in toilet training in healthy children were evaluated. A scale assessing children's readiness for toilet training (Toilet Training Readiness Scale-TTRS) was developed and content validated. Results: The mean age of the 409 children included in this study was 44.69 ± 13.07 months (min = 4; max = 60 months). The mean age of initiation of toilet training was 26.8 months. Most frequently, urine and faeces trainings were started together (52.1%). In the logistic regression analysis performed to evaluate the factors affecting the duration of toilet training, it was found that the TTRS score, mother's employment status, family type, child's first reaction, toilet type, and continuity of training were important predictors. The duration of toilet training showed a weak negative correlation with the scores obtained from the TTRS and the number of children in the family but a weak positive correlation with the age at the beginning of toilet training. The TTRS scores were inversely proportional to the duration of toilet training. Conclusions: Family characteristics, socioeconomic conditions, and readiness of the child for and no interruption in toilet training are important in completing toilet training in a short time and successfully. If a child-focused approach is adopted, evaluating the child from this point of view and initiating the training at the appropriate time may help to complete a more successful and shorter toilet training. Background/aim: The most commonly prescribed anti-seizures medications (ASMs) for the treatment of epilepsy are currently topiramate, zonisamide, lacosamide, carbamazepine and levetiracetam. The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative metabolic acidosis and the use of ASMs prior to craniotomy operations. Materials and methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated patients who underwent intracranial surgery with craniotomy under general anaesthesia between May 2020 and April 2023 and used ASMs. The patients were classified into four groups based on the pharmacological mechanisms of action of the ASMs administered before intracranial surgery (Group-I, zonisamide or topiramate; Group-II, lacosamide; Group-III, carbamazepine; Group-IV, levetiracetam). Metabolic acidosis severity was defined based on base excess (BE) levels: mild (-3 to -5), moderate (-5 to -10), and severe (below − 10). The study investigated the correlation between ASMs and the severity of metabolic acidosis in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative blood gas measurements. Results: Out of 35 patients, 24 patients underwent intracranial surgery and 11 patients underwent epilepsy surgery. There were statistically significant differences in the severity of metabolic acidosis between preoperative (p < 0.001), intraoperative (p < 0.001) and postoperative (p = 0.01) groups. The preoperative mean BE of group-I was − 4.7, which was statistically lower than that of group-III (p = 0.01) and group-IV (p < 0.001). Intraoperatively and postoperatively, group-I had a mean BE of -7.5 and − 3.2, respectively, which was statistically lower than that of groups II (p = 0.007; p = 0.04), III (p = 0.002; p = 0.03), and IV (p < 0.001; p = 0.009). There was no statistically significant difference in BE between groups II, III and IV at all three time points. Group I had the lowest BE at all three time points. Intraoperative bicarbonate was administered to all patients in group I, whereas no intraoperative bicarbonate was required in the other groups. In group I, 50% of patients required postoperative intensive care. Conclusion: The use of ASMs in patients undergoing surgery is important in terms of mortality and morbidity. Topirimat and zonisamide are ASMs that can cause preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative metabolic acidosis. Patients receiving topirimat or zonisamide are particularly susceptible to metabolic acidosis. Special care should be taken in the management of anaesthesia in patients receiving these drugs, and monitoring of the perioperative metabolic status is essential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: It was conducted to investigate digital gaming addiction among nursing students and the associated factors of such addiction. Methods: The descriptive and relationship-seeking study's universe included 1665 nursing students in three universities' nursing faculties and departments. The sample size was determined to be 774 based on a power analysis with a type I error rate of 0.05, a power of the test of 0.80 (α = 0.05, 1-β = 0.80), and an effect size of d = 0.10. Student Information Form, The Digital Game Addiction Scale (DGAS-7), and the Digital Game Playing Motivation Scale (DGPMS) were used to collect student information. Data analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis H test, Spearman correlation, and Binary Logistic Regression Model. Results: It was found that 83.7% of the students were female, and the mean age and BMI were 20.03 ± 1.72 years and 21.98 ± 2.90 kg/m2, respectively. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the students' Digital Game Addiction Scale and Digital Game Playing Motivation Scale Achievement and Energizing (r = 0.717), Curiosity and Social Acceptance (r = 0.612), and Uncertainty in Game Desire (r = -0.110) sub-dimensions mean scores (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The relationship between nursing students' digital game addiction, game playing motivation, and several individual characteristics affecting digital games was found. The study's results call for further research to focus on developing and testing interventions that could effectively reduce gaming addiction while enhancing positive aspects of digital engagement among nursing students. Objectives: To evaluate the incidence and severity of depression in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Materials and Methods: The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was administered to 74 patients with RP and 60 healthy controls. Biomicroscopic anterior segment and fundus examination, visual field, optical coherence tomography, and full-field electroretinography tests were performed in all cases. Variables were evaluated with bivariate, multiple linear, and ordinal logistic regression analyses. Results: The RP group included 40 (54%) male and 34 (46%) female patients, while the control group included 23 (38%) male and 37 (62%) female subjects. The patient group had a mean age of 39.20±12.4 years, median best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 0.10 decimal (1.0 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR]; range, 1.3-0.7 logMAR), and median visual field mean deviation (MD) score of -28.00 decibels (dB) (range, -1.00 to -34.00 dB). The median BDI score was statistically significantly higher in the patient group (19 points) than in the control group (12 points) (p<0.001). Moderate to severe depression (BDI ≥20) was detected in 61% of patients, while this rate was 25% in healthy controls. BCVA and visual field MD values were identified as predictors of depression score and severity level. The patients' age and gender did not affect total depression score or severity. Conclusion: The prevalence and severity of depression were found to be higher in RP patients than in healthy controls. There was a significant relationship between the patient's functional vision tests and the frequency and severity of depression. Depression reduces the reliability of visual function tests and impairs patients' quality of life. Therefore, assessing mental health as well as functional tests is important in patients with RP. Religion and spirituality have been associated with better psychological health. The present study aims to investigate the relationship between the psychological well-being, psychological resilience, life satisfaction and religion/spirituality. An online cross-sectional study was conducted at the Gaziantep University School of Medicine, Turkey. The data were collected by using Personal Information Form, Individual Religion Inventory (IRI), Psychological Wellbeing Scale (PWBS), Brief Psychological Resilience Scale (BPRS), and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). A total of 399 students participated in the study, 84% of them stated that they were Muslim. The perception of good psychological health was significantly higher among Muslims (32.7%) than non-Muslims (14.3%) (p = 0.013). The PWBS, BPRS, SWLS scores were significantly higher in those who attached very importance to religious/spiritual practices compared to those who attached little importance. While PWBS scores and BPRS scores did not differ, the SWLS scores was significantly higher in Muslims compared with the non-Muslims. A positive correlation was found between the IRI scores and PWBS (r = 0.446 p < 0.001), BPRS (r = 0.252 p < 0.001), and SWLS scores (r = 0.450 p < 0.001) for Muslim participants. BACKGROUND: It is essential to relieve bronchospasm or specific asthma symptoms by administering immediate inhaler treatment during an asthma exacerbation. The present study compared the effect of Fowler position and forward-leaning positions during nebulization on heart rate, SpO2, breathing frequency, pain, and anxiety levels in children experiencing asthma exacerbations. METHODS: The data originated from a randomized trial that compared 86 participants (study group n = 43, control group n = 43) who presented to the pediatric emergency department with asthma exacerbations between October 2019-February 2020. The subjects were administered nebulization 3 times, during which the study group was placed in the forward-leaning position and the control group in the routine Fowler position. The subjects provided information on chest pain and anxiety levels before and after nebulization, and heart rate, SpO2, and breathing frequency were measured before and after each nebulization. RESULTS: The difference in the mean SpO2 measured at admission and after the third nebulization was significantly higher (3.2 ± 1.5% vs 2.3 ± 1.9%, P = .01); the difference in the mean breathing frequency was considerably higher (-6.0 ± 1.7 breaths/min vs -3.2 ± 1.8 breaths/min, P < .001), and the difference in the mean pain scores was significantly higher (-3.3 ± 2.5 vs -2.0 ± 2.3, P = .02) in the study group than in the control group. In addition, after the third nebulization, the breathing frequency (22.8 ± 2.8 breaths/min vs 24.2 ± 2.7 breaths/min, P = .02) and pain score of the study group were lower (0.8 ± 1.3 vs 1.5 ± 1.5, P = .01). There was no difference in the mean heart rate (20.6 ± 16.2 beats/min vs 20.0 ± 15.4 beats/min, P = .85) and anxiety levels (-2.0 ± 2.2 vs -1.9 ± 2.2, P = .90) between the groups. CONCLUSIONS: Placing children in a forward-leaning position during nebulization was effective in improving SpO2 and reducing breathing frequency and chest pain. The forward-leaning position implemented during nebulization is a non-pharmacologic method that supports recovery in children with asthma exacerbations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of virtual reality distraction (VRD) on dental anxiety during scaling and root planing (SRP) in periodontitis patients. Materials and Methods: This randomized controlled split‐mouth study included 60 patients who scored 9 or above on the dental anxiety scale (DAS) and required SRP in at least two quadrants with at least five teeth and two sites with a probing depth of ≥4 mm. Randomly chosen quadrants were treated using virtual reality glasses, and other quadrants were treated without glasses at the same visit. During VRD, a video of nature scenes was projected onto the screen in front of the patient's eyes. DAS and a visual analogue scale about patient feelings were applied at the end of the procedure. Results: With VRD, the scale value of pain and discomfort level (VASP) was significantly reduced (p = 0.01, d = 0.57). Starting treatment without glasses significantly decreased VASP in both control and test sides (p = 0.00, d = 0.85; p = 0.00, d = 0.80, respectively) and increased the sensation of immersion and realism (p = 0.03, d = 0.45; p = 0.02, d = 0.46, respectively). Intraoperative and postoperative DAS values were significantly lower in patients who started treatment without VRD (p = 0.04, d = 0.34; p = 0.02, d = 0.44, respectively). Of the patients, 63.3% preferred VRD in the subsequent treatment. While patient preference did not correlate with sex, it correlated with age (r = −0.48, p = 0.01). Conclusions: The VRD and initiating SRP procedure with VRD affected the pain and discomfort level in anxious periodontitis patients. BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, physical inactivity and inactivity-related health problems have deepened in many individuals, including office workers. It is not yet known whether there are exercise programs through telerehabilitation that will provide rapid relief in a short time in office workers who apply part or full-time teleworking system. OBJECTIVE: To comparatively investigate influences of short-term upper extremity exercise trainings (UEET) on pain, musculoskeletal discomforts (MSD), physical activity (PA), mood, and quality of life (QOL) in office workers during COVID-19 restrictions. METHODS: Thirty office workers were divided into exercise (EG) (UEET and walking advice) and control (CG) (walking advice) groups. The UEET was applied for at least 20–40 minutes/day, 5–7 days/week for a one week between February 2022 and June 2022. Office workers' pain, MSD, PA level, mood and QOL were measured. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics of groups (EG: 37.8±7.04 years, CG: 41.6±7.97 years) were similar (p > 0.05). Following UEET, scores of office workers in EG on total step count, vigorous PA, moderate-intensity PA, walking, total PA, physical functioning, and body pain subscales of QOL significantly increased compared to scores of office workers in CG, while scores on neck, back and hip discomforts and anxiety and depression significantly decreased (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: One-week UEET and walking advice can improve office workers' daily step counts, MSD, PA levels, mood, and QOL. BACKGROUND: Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are being uses more often with cancer patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate attitudes, use and influencing factors of CAM among cancer patients during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: This descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted on 407 cancer patients in Turkey. The study was conducted during July-September 2021 using a Questionnaire that included a Complementary, Alternative and Conventional Medicine Attitude Scale (CACMAS). Pearson's Chi-Squared Test, Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, and logistic regression were all utilized. RESULTS: The findings revealed that 76.2% of the participants stated that they used CAM methods while undergoing cancer treatment, and 65.2% of those who did so kept from sharing this information to medical professionals. Phytotherapy was the most common CAM method used by patients. The use of CAM was found to be significantly higher among those who were 55–64 years of age, married, secondary school graduates, non-smokers, CAM users before their cancer diagnosis, and who had a family history of cancer (p < 0.05). The participants' average CACMAS scores were 112.20±16.53. Among those who used CAM during treatment, non-smoking, overweight-obese participants had higher CACMAS scores (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Due to the high prevalence of CAM usage among cancer patients and possible interaction effects with chemotherapy medications, it is important for healthcare professionals to assess and educate cancer patients regarding CAM use. Aim: This study aimed to determine the effects of profession‐related films on the professional pride of nursing students. Designs: The study was conducted with a randomised controlled experimental design. Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 102 students enrolled in the first year of the School of Nursing, Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University in Türkiye in the 2022–2023 academic year. These students were randomly assigned to the experimental (n = 57) and control (n = 45) groups. The experimental group watched two documentaries and a film on YouTube with a one‐week break. Self‐administered online questionnaires were distributed via WhatsApp groups for pretests and posttests. Data were collected with a "Sociodemographic Data Form" and the "Nursing Professional Pride Scale (NPPS)" included in the questionnaire forms prepared on the Google Forms platform. Data were analysed using Spearman's rho, the Mann–Whitney U Test, and the Wilcoxon Signed‐Rank Test. Results: The mean age of the participants was 18.80 ± 0.99 years, 80% of the participants were female, the place where 79.4% had lived for the longest duration in their lives was the city, 85.3% had information about the profession of nursing before they started university (36.8% from the internet, 34.6% from people around them). The experimental group had significantly higher NPPS scores than the control group after the intervention (p = 0.017). There was also a significant increase in the dimensions of professional feeling (p = 0.012) and desire to continue the profession in the experimental group (p = 0.002). Objective: Türkiye is the leading country that has been applying the MPOWER criteria of the World Health Organization for years. However, the prevalence of smoking among nurses appears to be high, according to the literature. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence, addiction levels, and dynamics of tobacco smoking among nurses in Türkiye. Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, a questionnaire (prepared in cooperation with the "World Health Organization") and the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence were administered to 529 nurses working at a tertiary-care university hospital in 2020. Logistic regression was performed to determine factors predicting smoking. Results: The prevalence of smoking among nurses was 32.7% (n = 173). The mean Fagerström test score indicated a "low dependence" level (score: 3 ± 2.6). Both results were higher for males. A relationship was found between trying smoking cigarette and hookah. Of the "current smokers" group, 102 (60.4%) stated that they wanted to quit smoking. Only 21 (27.6%) of the nurses who have tried to quit smoking thus far have received professional help. Conclusion: The prevalence of smoking among nurses working at a tertiary-care university hospital was relatively low compared to that among nurses in Türkiye. While females are normally expected to smoke less, the high prevalence of smoking among nurses (most of them female) raises the question of the professional basis of this situation. However, the low rate of receiving professional help reveals the lack of promotion and accessibility of smoking cessation outpatient clinics in the faculty environment. The present study aimed to explore the perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care among nurses who work in three different countries with different cultures as well as the factors influencing their perception. This is a cross-sectional multicultural study conducted with a total of 1090 nurses from Türkiye, Albania, and Italy. Data were collected through the "Individual Information Form" and the "Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale". Nurses' mean score on the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale was above average. It was also found that country, marital status, religious belief, Islamic religion, training for spiritual care, and using spiritual practices to cope with difficulties or illnesses influenced nurses' perception of spirituality and spiritual care. It was concluded that nurses from the three countries associated spirituality and spiritual care with religion and that some personal characteristics influenced their perceptions of spiritual care. Background: The literature on the use of inflammatory indexes for palliative care patients without malignancy is scarce. Aims: To determine which inflammatory indexes are associated with the mortality risks of non-malignant patients hospitalised and receiving palliative care. Methods: Discharged or deceased patients in a palliative care unit of a secondary care hospital were included. The laboratory values were obtained during the first 48 hours of hospitalisation. Findings: As a result of univariate Cox regression analysis, 14-day mortality rate was affected by lymphocyte ratio, neutrophil-to-albumin ratio (NAR), C-reactive protein/albumin ratio (CAR), multi-inflammatory indexes (MII-1) and MII-2 (p<0.001, p=0.001, p=0.002, p=0.009 and p=0.003, respectively); NLR, CLR, NAR, CAR, MII-1 and MII-2 (respectively p=0.005, p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, p=0.001 and p<0.001) affected 28-day mortality rate. Indexes that statistically significantly increased both 14-day and 28-day mortality rates independently of other variables were CLR, NAR, CAR, MII-1 and MII-2. Conclusion: High values in inflammatory indexes, including C-reactive protein and albumin increase the risk of 14-day and 28-day mortality rates in palliative care non-malignant patients. Objective: It was previously shown that the levels of several biomarkers increase due to acromegaly disease-related inflammation, and some markers are parallel to the disease's activity. The current study compared the possible relationship of growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) with acromegaly disease activity in healthy subjects. Methods: This case-control study was conducted in a single center. It included 40 acromegaly patients (25 active/15 controlled) (47.7 ± 9.4 years, 20 female/20 male) and 24 healthy individuals (49.9 ± 10.1 years, 13 female/11 male) with age-sex-body mass index similar to the patient group. Demographic data, metabolic and hormonal parameters, and GDF-15 levels of the study population were studied. Results: The median GDF-15 levels were significantly higher in patients with acromegaly compared to healthy subjects (HS) (280.4 (Q1-Q3: 197.0-553.2) vs. 213.3 (Q1-Q3: 179.9-297.2) ng/L, P = .01). Serum GDF-15 levels of active and controlled acromegaly patients were comparable (P = .39). Interestingly, compared to HS, GDF-15 levels were significantly higher in controlled disease (P = .013), whereas GDF-15 levels tended to be higher in active disease but did not reach statistical significance (P = .06). Growth differentiation factor-15 levels were positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.304, P = .01) and HbA1c (r = 0.292, P = .02). When evaluated across the entire cohort, GDF-15 levels were found to be higher in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic individuals (P = .04). Conclusion: Plasma GDF-15 levels were increased in the patients with acromegaly compared to healthy subjects. Aim: To explore predictors of spiritual well‐being behaviors among heart failure patients based on Wilson and Cleary's conceptual model of health‐related quality of life and to clarify the interrelationships among these variables. Design: A descriptive and correlational study design was used. Methods: This study included 202 heart failure patients treated between October 2020 and July 2021. Data were collected using the Symptom Status Questionnaire‐Heart Failure, Perception of Health Scale, and Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy‐Spiritual Well‐Being Scale. Descriptive analysis, correlation, and structural equation modeling were performed. Results: Characteristic factors positively affected spiritual well‐being both directly (β = 0.19, p = 0.007) and indirectly (β = 0.19; CI (0.106; 0.311)). The direct relationship between health perception and spiritual well‐being was significant (β = 0.83, p < 0.05). Symptom status acted as an essential mediator between model variables and spiritual well‐being (β = −0.28; CI (−0.449; −0.133)). Comorbidity and symptom status also influence spiritual well‐being through health perceptions. These variables explain 77% of the variance in spiritual well‐being. Conclusion: The modified structural equation modeling based on Wilson and Cleary's conceptual model fits well in predicting spiritual well‐being in patients with heart failure. Spiritual well‐being was reported to be poor, and changes in spiritual well‐being were predicted by age, educational level, marital status, comorbidity, symptom status, and health perception. The results can be applied to patients with heart failure and may serve as a guide for assessment and interventions for improving spiritual well‐being. Clinical Relevance: This study mainly concludes that symptom status and perceived health status affect spiritual well‐being in heart failure patients. Symptom relief and improvement in perceived health status interventions may help enhance spiritual well‐being in this population. Future studies are needed to investigate the different predictor's effects on spiritual well‐being and examine whether symptom management and health status‐enhancing interventions result in improved spiritual well‐being in the heart failure population. Gynecological examination has an very place among to maintain women's health. Negative attitudes and anxiety about gynecological examination may affect coming to the examination. In this study, we aimed to determine the effect of online training and counseling on women's attitudes and anxiety toward the gynecological examination. We randomized 100 women participating in the study into experimental and control groups. We concluded that online training and counseling had a positive effect on the attitudes of women in the experimental group toward gynecological examination. Also we determined that online training and counseling reduced women's state anxiety toward gynecological examinations. In this study, we determined that online training and counseling positively improved women's attitudes toward gynecological examination. We also found that online training and counseling reduced women's state anxiety about gynecological examinations. In the literature, most of the studies on gynecological examination have a descriptive design. This study is important since it contributes to scientific knowledge in determining the attitudes and anxiety levels of women that may affect their status of undergoing gynecological examination. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of video calling between preterm infants treated in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and their mothers on the physiological parameters of infants and mother-infant bonding. Background: Preterm infants need prolonged treatment in the NICU, and their families may have difficulty seeing their babies during this treatment process. Methods: This is a prospective, randomized-controlled, experimental study. The study sample consisted of 75 preterm infants and their mothers. The data were collected using a maternal introductory information form, a preterm infant introductory information form, a preterm infant physiological parameters follow-up form, and the Mother-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS). The study included 3 study groups: the video call group, the video call with lullaby group, and the control group. Video calls between preterm infants and their mothers were made through Zoom for 5 to 10 minutes daily for 7 days. The mothers filled out the MIBS online before and on the 7th and 30th days of the study. Results: Preterm infants in the video call and the video call with lullaby groups had higher MIBS mean scores on the 7th and 30th days of the study than their pretest MIBS scores. Preterm infants in the video call and the video call with lullaby groups had statistically significantly higher MIBS mean scores on the seventh day of the study than those in the control group. At the end of the 7-day study period, there was an improvement in the physiological parameters of preterm infants in the video call group and the video call with lullaby group compared with those in the control group, and this relationship was statistically significant. Conclusions: In conclusion, the implementation of video calls between mothers and preterm infants in NICUs had a healing effect on the physiological parameters of preterm infants and increased mother-infant bonding. Introduction: We aimed to investigate whether piroxicam, either alone or in combination with the local anaesthetic agent lidocaine hydrochloride, differs from standalone local anaesthesia and without medication, thereby providing effective pain control in the termination of early pregnancies. Methods: Our study is a case-control study in which 177 individuals with pregnancies between 5-9 weeks of gestation who applied to the research hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, for legal pregnancy termination were included. The participants were divided into four groups. The groups were administered as follows: a control group without medication, a paracervical block with lidocaine hydrochloride, sublingual piroxicam, and a combination of both lidocaine hydrochloride and sublingual piroxicam. After the completion of the aspiration curettage procedure, the pain intensity experienced by the groups was evaluated using the Five-Point Pain Scale. Results: The participants' mean age was 31.02±6.14 years, and the average gestational week was 7.05±0.78. There was a statistically significant difference in pain intensity among the groups (p<0.001). The pain intensity in the control group was significantly higher than in the local anaesthetic (p<0.001), piroxicam (p<0.001), and piroxicam + local anaesthetic (p<0.01) groups. Discussion and Conclusion: The use of lidocaine hydrochloride for paracervical block, in combination with piroxicam during the aspiration curettage procedure for pregnancies between 5-9 weeks, is effective, safe, and provides good pain control. Background: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by significant academic difficulties despite normal intelligence and adequate education. The difficulties with reading, writing, and arithmetic may manifest independently or concurrently at different ages. Early symptoms may appear in preschool, including delays in social skills, motor skills, and language development. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of preschool children at risk for SLD and related psychiatric disorders. Method: Data were collected from 515 preschool children in Edirne City, Turkey, using a screening scale for early symptoms of SLD. Socio-demographic information was obtained, and children at risk were invited for a psychiatric evaluation. Results: The mean age of the participants was 72.5 ± 5.6 months. It was determined that 5.7% of the preschool children who participated in the questionnaire were at risk of SLD according to the screening scale scores. Factors such as a father's low education, the mother smoking during pregnancy, a longer stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, longer screen time, and consanguinity between parents were associated with an increased risk of SLD. Conclusion: This study emphasises the importance of early identification and intervention for SLD and the need to consider associated psychiatric comorbidities. Background: With the rapid improvement in healthcare technologies, the security and privacy of the most sensitive data are at risk. Patient privacy has many components, even when data are in electronic format. Although patient privacy has extensively been discussed in the literature, there is no study that has presented all components of patient privacy. Methods: This study presents a complete assessment framework, develops an inventory as an assessment tool, and examines the reliability and validity of the inventory. The study was carried out in three phases: conceptual framework development, inventory development, and an evaluation case study. Fuzzy conjoint analysis was used in the evaluation to deal with subjectivity and ambiguity. As a result of the evaluation, the case study institution was given a patient privacy maturity level between 1 and 5, where 1 is the worst and 5 is the best. Results: The case study evaluated the largest hospital in Turkey, which employs 800 nurses. Half of the nurses, 400, participated in the study. According to the literature, healthcare institutions do not invest enough in protecting patients' privacy, and the results of the study support this finding. The institution's maturity level was 2, which is poor. Conclusions: This study measured privacy maturity with many assessment components. The result of the assessment explains to patients and the public whether their data are secure or not. With the implementation of this maturity level, patients have an idea about which institution to choose, and the public can infer the reliability of institutions in terms of patient privacy. The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between spiritual well-being, prenatal stress and attachment level of Turkish women conceiving spontaneously or with assisted reproductive techniques (ART). The comparative descriptive study type was conducted between November 2021 and June 2022 with 202 pregnant women, including 87 women conceiving with ART and 115 women conceiving spontaneously, who applied for routine prenatal care checkup in a state hospital in the west of Turkey. Both groups have a high level of spiritual well-being. Pregnant women in the ART group experience higher prenatal distress (9.6% for spontaneous, 12.6% for ART, p = 0.487) and low level of attachment (69.72 ± 7.98 for spontaneous, 66.24 ± 8.88 for ART, p = 0.006) compared to the other group. Additionally, as insufficient partner involvement in the prenatal process increases in pregnant women in both groups, prenatal attachment decreases. It is extremely important that midwives and nurses evaluate the spiritual well-being of pregnant women and provide holistic care in line with their spiritual needs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remains high worldwide in today's society, especially among young people. Youth education on STDs could help to reduce the prevalence of the condition in society and prevent new cases. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of peer‐based short‐form educational videos on youths' knowledge of STDs. Methods: This quasi‐experimental study was conducted in Turkey. The sample consisted of 121 students divided into experimental and control groups. Pre‐ and post‐test control group quasi‐experimental research design was employed in this study during the spring semester of the academic year 2021–2022. Peer‐based short‐form educational videos created by nursing students were used as an intervention. The survey form and Sexually Transmitted Disease Knowledge Questionnaire were used to collect data. Results: Participants with parental responsibilities and had previous STD experience had higher knowledge score than the other subgroups. There was a significant main effect of peer‐based short‐form educational video on participants overall knowledge score of STDs. Additionally, the effect of intervention continued at 12‐week follow‐up measurement. Conclusion: Peer‐based short‐form educational videos increase young people's knowledge of STD, and the impact of the intervention continued at 12‐week follow up. Aim: Studies of the effects of COVID‐19, especially post‐acute COVID‐19 syndrome, on psychological health in non‐severe cases are limited. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated risk factors of psychological symptoms, and quality‐of‐life in three groups of outpatients, hospitalized and intensive care patients. Methods: A total 276 patients, previously confirmed with SARS‐CoV‐2 infection, attending the COVID‐19 follow‐up outpatient clinic from December 2020 to July 2021 were interviewed face‐to‐face. In this cross‐sectional, retrospective study, all participants were asked our self‐designed demographic and screening questions to assess their psychological symptoms and administered the WHQOOL‐BREF survey to evaluate quality of life. Results: In screening questions, major depressive disorder symptoms were detected at a rate of 20.3%, generalized anxiety disorder symptoms at a rate of 16.7%, panic attack symptoms at a rate of 10.9%, post‐traumatic stress disorder symptoms at a rate of 28.6% and obsessive‐compulsive disorder symptoms at a rate of 18.1%. The outpatient group with COVID‐19 infection had a higher risk of developing psychological symptoms and decreased quality of life. Conclusion: COVID‐19 infection was found to have a considerable psychological impact on those treated as outpatients despite the less severe course of their illness. At the post‐acute‐COVID‐19 period, a considerable number of outpatients with COVID‐19 infection were at higher risk for psychological distress symptoms than those who had been treated in the hospital or intensive care unit.Depression, anxiety, panic disorder and PTSD symptoms were found to be higher in outpatients and those with these symptoms were also shown to have a lower quality of life.Our findings highlight the significant psychological impact of COVID‐19 on patients, even after their reported recovery from the acute manifestations of this disease. The implications of this paper: Ongoing psychological symptoms in the post‐COVID period are not associated with the severity of the disease in the acute phase.It is important that healthcare professionals are equally concerned not only with physical condition of post‐COVID‐19 patients but also with their psychological state and the patient's psychology‐related quality of life. Aim: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a persistent inflammatory autoimmune disorder. In an endeavor to juxtapose disease activity against the acknowledged occurrence of subclinical atherosclerosis in patients with SLE, this study sought to evaluate the interrelation between carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), SLE disease activity index (SLEDAI), and Syndecan-4 (SDC4) levels. Material and Methods: This study assembled a cohort comprising 70 patients with SLE aged 18 years and older, devoid of concomitant systemic diseases, was assembled, alongside a control group consisting of 68 healthy volunteers attending the rheumatology outpatient clinic. The assessment quantifying SDC4 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. CIMT measurements were conducted for both the patient and control groups. SLEDAI scores, as well as sociodemographic and laboratory data for both groups, were systematically extracted from the hospital's digitalized medical records system. Results: SDC4 levels within the patient cohort (8.211±9.069) exhibited a statistically significant reduction compared to the SDC4 levels in the control group (26.221±24.653). Furthermore, the CIMT values for the patient group (0.558±0.116) demonstrated a statistically significant variance in contrast to the CIMT values of the control group (0.49±0.117). Remarkably, a noteworthy correlation emerged between SDC4 and CIMT. Additionally, a significant association was identified between SDC4 levels and body mass index (p<0.05). Further correlations were discerned between SDC4 levels and SLEDAI in the patient group. Correspondingly, a statistically significant correlation was observed between CIMT and SLEDAI in the patient group. Conclusion: Despite the statistically significant elevation in CIMT, an essential indicator of subclinical atherosclerosis, within our patient group compared with the control group, we posit that SDC4 levels may not be reliable predictors of atherosclerosis. The one of the leading causes of adolescent morbidity and mortality worldwide is motor vehicle accidents (MVA). The use of seat belts significantly lowers MVA fatalities and injuries. The aim of this study is to investigate adolescent seat belt usage patterns and relation with risky behaviors. The study conducted at two medical institutions with non-immigrant and literate adolescents aged 12–18. Demographics, seat belt use, and risk-taking behavior were collected through questionnaires. 726 teenagers (422 girls and 304 boys) with an average age of 176.7 ± 23.37 months participated in the study. Parents' educational levels and front-seat belt use have been found to be correlated. Comparatively to non-users, seat belt users demonstrated lower risk scores (total, traffic, substance, and social). The use of seat belts was significantly predicted by traffic risk, according to logistic regression. The frequency of seatbelt use was higher among participants from cities with higher socioeconomic status. As a result, it was found that adolescents who exhibited more risky behaviors had a lower frequency of seat belt use and seat belt use was associated with socioeconomic level and parental education level. AIM: This study aims to investigate the effects of aromatherapy massage on the pain severity and quality of life in patients diagnosed with migraine, in addition to medical treatment during a migraine attack. METHODS: The study was performed as a randomized controlled trial. This study was carried out in the emergency department of a State Hospital. It was performed in the Emergency Department of Bitlis State Hospital. Data was collected between April 15, and October 15, 2017. The sample of the study was consisted of a total of 70 migraine patients including 35 experimental and 35 control group, subjects who visited the emergency department with migraine pain, along with the medical treatment, patients of experimental group were massaged for 15 minutes with an aromatic oil mixture applied on the temple and root of the neck for three weeks. RESULTS: It was found that the VAS scores of the experimental group before the application (9.26 ± 0.95) were significantly higher than the control group (8.54 ± 1.69) (p = .03). Migraine quality of life scale total and subscale scores of experimental group after the application were significantly higher than the control group (p < .05). CONCLUSION: In the study, it was concluded that aromatherapy massage had an effect on migraine pain and quality of life of patients with migraine. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIM: The aim of the study was determined to examine the effect of breastfeeding education, counseling, and support based on Human Caring Theory on mothers' perceptions of breastfeeding self-efficacy and type of breastfeeding. METHODS: The randomized controlled prospective study was conducted with 100 Turkish women (intervention: 50; control: 50) between 2019 and 2021 at a university hospital in Izmir. The intervention program included Human Caring Theory-based face-to-face sessions, for 12 hours, asynchronous distance education modules, and telephone support process. Individual asynchronous distance education and telephone support based on Human Caring Theory were provided from the prenatal process to the sixth month postpartum. The control group received two hours of standard breastfeeding training in a childbirth education class. Clinical trial number was received (NCT05246748). RESULTS: Human Caring Theory-based breastfeeding education and support program improved breastfeeding self-efficacy scores of the intervention group (68.88 ± 3.15) compared to the control group (58.08± 9,92). In addition, the breastfeeding duration and exclusively breastfeeding in the intervention group were longer and statistically higher than the control group. CONCLUSION: Since breastfeeding is an emotional and social interactive process, using the theor etica l/phi losop hical framework based on human care will provide a scientific and holistic perspective. It may be crucial to prefer Human Caring Theory based on routine programs for well-being of breastfeeding rates and successful breastfeeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To examine the prevalence of smoking among medical faculty students in Turkey, and to explore the associations between smoking, depression, and other factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among medical students in Konya, Turkey, from November 2018 to February 2019. The first section included eight questions pertaining to sociodemographic details. The second comprised nine questions addressing smoking and other harmful habits. The third section involved the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence while the fourth was the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: The study was completed with a total of 1117 participants (90.2% of all students). In regard to smoking, 813 (72.78%) were non-smokers, 98 (8.77%) were ex-smokers, and 222 (19.87%) were active smokers. Notably, 16.29% of students (n = 182) had a high BDI score (≥17). Male sex, good economic status, depression diagnosis at any time in life, and alcohol use were independently associated with active smoking. Being a senior student and regular exercise were independently associated with a low (<17) BDI score, whereas depression diagnosis at any time in life and drug use were independently associated with high (≥17) BDI. Conclusions: Almost 20% of medical school students were active smokers, with about a 2.5-fold higher prevalence among males compared to females. There is a significant association between smoking frequency and symptoms of depression. Policies targeting modifiable risk factors can reduce smoking and depression among future physicians, which can have a strong impact on population-wide smoking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
