Accurately determining the timing and mechanism of metallogenesis of ore deposits is essential for developing a robust genetic model for their exploration. In this paper, we analyze the formation conditions of cassiterite in five major deposits of southern Hunan Province, one of the most important tungsten-tin (W-Sn) provinces in South China, using a combination of cathodoluminescence imaging, in situ U-Pb geochronology, and trace-element concentration data. In situ cassiterite U-Pb geochronology constrains the main period of Sn mineralization to between 155.4 and 142.0 Ma, demonstrating a temporal and genetic relationship to silicic intrusive magmatism in the same area. Three stages of magmatic activity and metallogenic evolution are recognized: (1) Early Paleozoic and Triassic: the initial enrichment stage of tungsten and tin; (2) Jurassic: the metasomatic mineralization stage; and (3) Cretaceous: the magmatic-hydrothermal superposition stage. The cassiterite in these deposits takes four forms, i.e., quartz vein-type, greisen-skarn-type, greisen-type, and granite-type, representing a progression characterized by the increasing content and decreasing range of variation of high field strength elements (HFSEs), and reflecting a general increase in the degree of evolution of the associated granites. Rare earth element (REE) concentrations suggest that precipitation of cassiterite was insensitive to the redox state of the fluid and that precipitation of cassiterite in the southern Hunan Sn deposits did not require a high-fO2 environment. The ion-adsorption rare earth deposit developed on the Mosuoying granite in the Panxi area of southwestern China represents a significant advancement in the exploration of ion-adsorption rare earth deposits in Sichuan. Being the first and currently the sole ion-adsorption rare earth deposit in Sichuan, studying its rare earth mineralization characteristics holds great importance. This paper aims to investigate the geochemical properties of the Mosuoying granite and its overlying weathered crust using rock geochemical methods based on field geological investigations. The findings reveal that the deposit belongs to the light rare earth type, with the ore-forming parent rock attributed to the high-potassium calc-alkaline series. It exhibits a high rock REE content ranging from 419 to 578 ppm, indicating favorable mineralization potential. Hydrothermal alteration reduces the REE content of the parent rock, leading to a notable increase in the LREE/HREE ratio, thus impacting the partitioning of rare earth elements and subsequent ore formation. The distribution characteristics of rare earth elements in each layer of the weathered crust are controlled by the parent rock and exhibit a light rare earth distribution pattern. The completely weathered layer is the main enrichment zone for rare earth elements, and the migration and enrichment patterns of rare earth elements in the weathered crust are evident. From the semi-weathered layer to the completely weathered layer, all REEs were gained, with a higher degree of migration for LREE. From the completely weathered layer to the clay layer, all REEs were lost, and the vertical distribution of rare earth content shows a "low-high-low" pattern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high volatility and energy usage of rare earths have raised sustainable and financial concerns for environmentalists and sustainable investors. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate time-varying volatility transmission among rare earths elements, energy commodities, and sustainable financial markets. The sample covers global and major financial markets, i.e., US, China, and Australia. Using daily log returns from 2018 to 2022, the paper considers the dynamic Time Varying Parameter-Vector Autoregression (TVP-VAR) connectedness approach to gauge the time-varying features of volatility spillovers. The findings of total spillovers index reveal weak connectedness among markets during the sampled period. US and China rare earth markets were net volatility transmitters, whereas the Dow Jones Australia Sustainability Index (ASI), China Sustainability Index (CSI), Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (SWI), and MVIS Global Rare Earth Index (MVISGREI) were net recipients. Moreover, energy commodities i.e., WTI Crude Oil, Gasoline, and Natural Gas were net volatility transmitters, while ASI, CSI, and SWI were major volatility recipients. The weak financial contagion effect and connectedness across financial markets uncovers possible diversification opportunities. However, the US sustainable financial market is persistently not affected by these volatility spillovers. This paper reports two types of basalt that have different ages (Carboniferous and Permian) but occur next to each other in the northern part of the Changning–Menglian accretionary wedge, southwestern China. We use the geochronology and geochemical data to evaluate the tectonic evolution of the Palaeo‐Tethys during this period. Zircon grains from the mafic‐ultramafic rocks associated with the Permian basalts in the Xiaomengtai area yield a U–Pb age of 281 Ma and εHf(t) values from +9.2 to +12.8. The Permian mafic‐ultramafic rocks and the associated basalts are all characterized by normal mid‐ocean ridge basalt (N‐MORB)‐like chondrite‐normalized rare earth elements patterns, moderately negative Nb‐Ta anomalies in the mantle‐normalized immobile incompatible trace element patterns, and positive εNd(t) values from +4.2 to +6.5, which are consistent with the geochemical characteristics of mafic‐ultramafic rocks in supra‐subduction zone (SSZ)‐type ophiolite. On the contrary, the Carboniferous basalts, which are associated with marine carbonates, are characterized by light REE enrichments, slightly positive Nb‐Ta anomalies, and εNd(t) values from +2.8 to +4.0. These features are similar to those of typical oceanic island basalts (OIBs) worldwide. Modelling results using REEs show that the parental magmas for the Carboniferous OIBs and the Permian basalts were likely derived from mantle peridotites at the depths of garnet and spinel stability, respectively, consistent with the formation depth of these two different types of basalt globally. The occurrence of these two different types of mafic‐ultramafic rocks with significantly different ages in the same area supports the view that they are the remnants of the accreted Palaeo‐Tethys oceanic crust. The Carboniferous OIBs are considered to be parts of an OIB‐carbonate seamount chain that originally formed in the southern part of the Palaeo‐Tethys. The Permian mafic‐ultramafic rocks are regarded as fragments of SSZ‐type ophiolites that were present in the northern part of the Palaeo‐Tethys. Dongcao muscovite granite, as the product of the second stage of the magmatic intrusion of the Ganfang composite pluton, is closely related to the mineralization of Li–Nb–Ta rare metals in the Yifeng area. This paper aims to discuss the diagenetic age, evolutionary process, and relationship with the rare metal mineralization of Dongcao muscovite granite by using petrographic, cassiterite U–Pb dating and geochemical analyses. Petrographic analysis shows that the lithology of the Dongcao muscovite granite is medium– to fine–grained muscovite monzogranite. The cassiterite U–Pb dating results show that the diagenetic age of the Dongcao muscovite granite is 139.7 ± 6.7 Ma, which is Early Cretaceous. The geochemical analysis indicates that the rock is characterized by high Si, abundant aluminum alkalis, low Ca and Fe, and low Mg, which indicates that this granite is a strongly peraluminous rock. Moreover, the Dongcao muscovite granite is enriched with Rb, U, Ta, Pb, P, and Hf and depleted of Ba, Sr, Ti, and rare earth elements (REEs), with a tetrad effect of REEs. Based on this analysis, the Dongcao muscovite granite is a highly differentiated granite that formed in the tectonic transition from continental collisional to post–collisional settings related to the subduction of the Paleo–Pacific plate. A high degree of crystallization differentiation occurred at the early stage of magmatic evolution, resulting in the initial enrichment of Li–Nb–Ta–Sn. The Ailaoshan orogenic belt is one of the most significant orogenic belts in the southeastern margin of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau. The widely developed magmatic rocks in this belt preserve the multi-stage tectonic evolution records of the South China Plate. As an important response to the Rodinia breakup tectonic event, the study of Neoproterozoic magmatic rocks in the area is of great significance for reconstructing the Neoproterozoic tectonic process of the Ailaoshan orogenic belt and the tectonic evolution of the South China Plate. Petrology, geochemistry, zircon U-Pb, and Lu-Hf isotopes of the Daping pluton in the Ailaoshan orogenic belt are studied in this paper. The Daping pluton is mainly divided into gabbros and granites. Gabbros and granites belong to the sub-alkaline series, which are relatively enriched in large ion lithophilic elements and depleted in high-field strength elements. The ΣREE contents of the gabbro are low with enrichment in LREEs and depletion in HREEs, and the degree of differentiation of light and heavy rare earth is low, with positive δEu and weak negative δCe anomalies. The ΣREE contents of the granite are low with enrichment in LREEs and depletion in HREEs, and the degree of light and heavy rare earth differentiation is high, with medium–weak negative δEu and weak positive δCe anomalies, suggesting an A2-type granite with A1-A2 transition characteristics. The weighted average age of the gabbro is 816.1 ± 4.1 Ma (MSWD = 0.11), with zircon εHf(t) values of −7.5–5.5. The magma source is a mixture of an ancient crust source and a new mantle source; the weighted average age of the syenogranite is 783.7 ± 8.1 Ma (MSWD = 1.4), with zircon εHf(t) values of −4.3–0.4. The magma source is mainly ancient crustal material (Ailaoshan Group), mixed with a small amount of mantle-derived material; the weighted average age of the monzogranite is 754.8 ± 6.1 Ma (MSWD = 3.0), with positive zircon εHf(t) values of 1.65–10.36. The magma source is a mixture of a large number of mantle-derived materials and a small number of crust-derived materials (Ailaoshan Group). The Daping pluton was formed in the transitional tectonic environment from post-collision to intraplate continental margin rift, corresponding to the Rodinia breakup process in the western margin of the South China Plate. China's rare earth export trade has developed so rapidly since 1990s that China has gradually occupied a leading position in the international market. However, this fast development was proceeding at the cost of the rare earth energy consumption and environmental devastation. Now China begins to attach great importance to environmental protection, which attracts many researchers. This study aims to analyze the influence of environmental regulation on China's rare earth export trade. And the original study is amongst the few to examine the relationship between environmental regulation and China's rare earth export with the product-level data. Different from previous studies, this paper selects China's rare earth export data from 1995 to 2015 and introduces product heterogeneity based on the rare earth production process. Moreover, this study uses the entropy weight method to measure the intensity of environmental regulation. The core conclusions are as follows: (1) Environmental regulation significantly promotes rather than restrains China's rare earth export. (2) According to the rare earth production process, this paper divides rare earth products into 3 kinds, that is, rare earth raw materials, rare earth useful components and rare earth end-use applications. Then, it is found that rare earth useful component export in processing and smelting is positively affected by environmental regulation. Rare earth raw materials and end-use applications in China's export are hardly affected. (3) Technological innovation has a mediating effect on the impact mechanism of environmental regulation on China's rare earth export, which means that environmental regulation significantly promotes technological innovation of enterprises, and thereby the rare earth export is increased. Due to the increasing demand for rare earth elements (REE) resources in the market and the shortage of their direct sources, the research on REE in coal fly ash (CFA) has attracted the increasing attention of scholars because of its high content of rare earth. To extract and separate REE from the leaching solution of CFA, the method of solvent extraction after acid leaching is usually adopted. In this paper, the leaching solution of coal fly ash from Panbei, south China, with an average REE content of 478 μg/g, was taken as the research object. The extracted di-2-Ethylhexyl phosphonic acid (P204) was used to explore the solvent extraction effect and mechanism. When performed with the conditions: pH value of 2.1, oil-water ratio (O/A) of 1, extraction time of 25 min, solvent concentration of 6% and temperature of 30 ℃, the extraction rates of La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Y were 89.16%, 94.11%, 95.56%, 96.33%, and 99.80%, respectively. It was indicated that the P204 extraction system separated REE well from the aqueous phase. The structure of the extraction complex was deduced by taking yttrium as an object of analysis, and the extraction mechanism equation was determined by using the slope method. In this extraction system, the molecular formula of the complex is YCl2(HA2) and the enthalpy change (△H) is +86.68 kJ/mol, which provides theoretical guidance for the extraction of REE in industrial production. One of the most important geological features of South China are the widespread Mesozoic igneous rocks that play a key role in revealing the tectonic evolution of South China. Due to the thick covering of vegetation and Quaternary sediments, the early Cretaceous magmatism in southwestern South China is still not well constrained. In this paper, we report newly identified early Cretaceous granites in Guangxi, South China. Zircon U–Pb dating results showed that representative fine-grained and coarse-grained granites in northeastern Guangxi indicate the early Cretaceous ages of 141 ± 3 Ma and 141 ± 4 Ma, respectively. Geochemically, both fine-grained and coarse-grained granites had high 10,000 × Ga/Al ratios and belonged to A-type granite. They had undergone high degrees of magma differentiation, as evidenced by extremely negative Sr, Ba, and Eu anomalies. They had high REE (rare earth elements) contents (>451 ppm). The fine-grained granites were characterized by higher HREE (heavy rare earth elements) contents, lower LREE (light rare earth elements) contents, and lower LREE/HREE ratios than the coarse-grained granites. Integrated with regional geological data, the early Cretaceous granites were likely formed in a back-arc extensional environment in response to the increased subduction angle of the Paleo-Pacific plate. Different REE contents in the fine- and coarse-grained granites may be a result of fractional crystallization. The Zuluhong quartz-vein-type polymetallic deposit, located in the Alatau area of Western Tianshan, China, is a particular and typical tungsten deposit associated with copper. This paper presents major and trace element analyses of magmatic and altered (i.e, chloritized) biotite from the deposit, in order to identify the source of the magmas and characterize the mineralization physical-chemical condition. Magmatic biotite is Fe-rich and has high Rb/Ba ratios (0.27–9.14), indicative of extensive differentiation of granite. Moreover, magmatic biotite has total rare earth element (∑REE) contents that are 5–10% of the whole-rock contents, shows slight light REE depletion, and negative Ce anomalies. Magmatic biotite is enriched in some large-ion lithophile elements (LILE; e.g., Rb and K) and depleted in some high-field-strength elements (HFSE; e.g., Th and Nb). These geochemical features, coupled with geological evidence, indicate that the Zuluhong intrusion is a highly fractionated I-type granite derived from lower crustal melting. During ore formation, magmatic biotite was partially to totally altered to chlorite due to interaction with ore-forming fluids. The temperature and oxygen fugacity decreased during alteration. The mineralization in the Zuluhong polymetallic deposit can be divided into at least two stages. In the early stage, quartz-vein-type wolframite mineralization formed from Si- and volatile-rich fluids that were derived from fractionated granitic magma. In the later stage, W–Cu ores formed as metal sulfides were dominated by chalcopyrite. The later ore-forming fluids experienced a decrease in temperature and oxygen fugacity as they reacted (i.e, chloritization and lesser silicification) with reducing wall rocks around the contact zone of the intrusion. Rare earth elements govern today's high-tech world and are deemed to be essential for the attainment of sustainable development goals. Since the 1990s, these elements have been predominantly supplied by one single actor, China. However, due to the increasing relevance of their availability, the United States, who imports 80% of its rare earths from China, recently announced its plan to (re-)enter the rare earths supply market. This paper analyzes the strategic interactions among these two countries in open-loop and Markovian strategy spaces. Particular interest is devoted to the impact of heterogeneous supply concepts on (1) the theoretical optimal timing for the United States (U.S.) to enter the non-renewable resource market; (2) China's optimal supply reaction to the U.S.' entry announcement; (3) the central planner outcome; and (4) the profitability of the suppliers' extraction behavior. By setting up a continuous-time differential game model, we show that in the absence of arbitrage opportunity, (1) the U.S. should always postpone the production launch until its rare earths reserves coincide with those of China; (2) China's monopolistic supply is not shaped by the selected strategy; (3) while the duopolistic Markovian behavior is initially more lucrative than open-loop commitment, the opposite situation emerges as the competition proceeds; and (4) on balance, both countries are financially better off when committing to an open-loop supply path. Due to their remarkable magnetic properties, such as a high maximum energy product, high remanence, and high coercivity, NdFeB magnets are used in a variety of technological applications. Because of their very limited recycling, high numbers of spent NdFeB magnets are widely available in the market. In addition to China's monopoly on the supply of most rare earth elements, there is a need for the recovery of these critical metals, as their high import price poses an economic and environmental challenge for manufacturers. This paper proposes a pyrometallurgical recycling method for end-of-life NdFeB magnets by oxidizing them in air as first required step. The main goal of this method is to oxidize rare earth elements from NdFeB magnets in order to prepare them for the carbothermic reduction. The experimental conditions, such as the oxidation temperature and time, were studied in order to establish the phase transformation during oxidation using the Factsage Database and experimental conditions. Our thermogravimetric analysis TGA analysis revealed an increased sample mass by 35% between room temperature and 1100 °C, which is very close to the total calculated theoretical value of oxygen (36.8% for all elements, and only 3.6% for rare earth elements REE), confirming the complete oxidation of the material. The obtained quantitative analysis of the oxidation product, in (%), demonstrated values of 53.41 Fe2O3, 10.37 Fe3O4; 16.45 NdFeO3; 0.45 Nd2O3, 1.28 Dy2O3, 1.07 Pr2O3, and 5.22 α-Fe. Lower Cambrian Xiaoerblak Formation is one of the major exploration targets in Cambrian pre-salt Tarim Basin; however, the exploration breakthrough is restricted by insufficient understanding of its sedimentary evolution and reservoir genesis. In this paper, based on a systematic description of the outcrop in the Xiaoerblak section, northwestern Tarim Basin, some samples were selected for tests of stable carbon and oxygen isotopic compositions, strontium isotopic composition, order degree, trace and rare earth elements, U-Pb isotopic age and clumped isotope. It is found that the Xiaoerblak Formation mainly develops nine types of dolomites, i.e., laminated microbial dolomite, thrombolite dolomite, stromatolite dolomite, foamy microbial dolomite, grain dolomite, etc. According to the lithofacies associations, it can be divided into three members: Xi 1, Xi 2, and Xi 3, of which member Xi 2 is subdivided into three submembers. The characteristics of lithofacies assemblage formed bottom to top indicate that it can be described as a third-order sequence. The Xiaoerblak Formation was deposited in a nearshore shallow seawater environment characterized by high water salinity and temperature under a warm and humid climate during the Early Cambrian, giving rise to the sedimentary sequence of inner ramp lagoon, subtidal microbial mound shoal and tidal flat in the carbonate ramp setting from bottom to top. Its dolomitization occurred in the penecontemporaneous–shallow burial period when the temperature was relatively low and high-salinity seawater acted as the main dolomitizaiton fluid. The reservoir space mainly comprises primary microbial framework pores and vugs formed by the atmospheric freshwater dissolution. Reservoirs were controlled by lithofacies, high-frequency sequence boundary and early dolomitization. The Zhashui-Shanyang ore cluster area is one of the most important gold polymetallic ones in northwestern China. The Qinglingou gold deposit is a newly discovered small-scale deposit in the Zhashui-Shanyang area. Gold mineralization closely related to acid intrusive rocks has been found for the first time in this area. In this paper, the geochronology, whole-rock geochemistry, and isotope signature of the granite porphyries in the deposit are studied. They are characterized by variable medium SiO2 (67.22–71.72 wt.%), high K2O + Na2O contents (6.54–10.34 wt.%), and variable Al2O3 (14.47–15.10 wt.%) values. The A/CNK ratios range from 0.90 to 1.23, and the A/NK ratios vary from 1.14 to 1.48. These rocks also contain biotite and amphiboles and are similar to peraluminous and high-K calc-alkaline I-type granites. The Qinglingou granite porphyries show relative enrichment of Rb, Th, and K, and depletion of Nb, Ta, P, Ti, and other high field strength elements. These porphyries are enriched in light rare earth elements relative to heavy rare earth elements with weak negative Eu anomalies (δEu = 0.63–0.89), which is interpreted to be the best age of crystallization of the Qinglingou porphyries. LA–ICPMS zircon U–Pb dating yields an age of 211 ± 1.2 Ma (n = 16, MSWD = 0.39). The close spatial relationship between the ore bodies and granite porphyry dikes indicates that this age may represent the metallogenic age in this area. The zircons have 176Hf/177Hf ratios ranging from 0.282625 to 0.282702, the εHf(t) values are near 0 and the two-stage zircon Hf model ages range from 1121 to 1296 Ma. These data indicate that the Qinglingou granite porphyries were derived from the interplay between mantle- and crustal-derived magmas. We therefore propose that there is potential gold in carbonate rocks at the periphery of porphyry-skarn copper-molybdenum deposits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rare earth is one of the most important strategic minerals in the world today. The wide application of new products and technologies in the global market has made the world's demand for rare earth resources grow rapidly. As an important basic resource of high technology, rare earth plays a significant role in national security and strategy. As rare earth mineral resources are irreplaceable in civil, military, and nuclear industries, they have become national strategic resources of various countries in the world. Although China's rare earth industry has occupied a leading position in the world, with the continuous expansion of the scale of the rare earth industry, the pollution problem of "three wastes" produced in the recovery of rare earth mineral resources is becoming more and more serious. From the perspective of resource endowment, China is rich in rare earth resources, but the declining trend of resource reserves is obvious, and the advantages and disadvantages of resources are more prominent. Based on the goal planning and few-shot learning, this paper studies the economic significance of rare earth resource development, aiming at solving some problems in the development of rare earth mineral resources in China, and thus promoting the scientific and healthy development of the rare earth industry. Hainan Island is a key part of the eastern Tethyan region and contains detailed geological information that can enhance our understanding of the tectonic evolution of this region since the late Palaeozoic. In this paper, we report geochronological, geochemical, and Sr–Nd isotopic data for granitoids from Baomei and Chahe in the northern part of Hainan Island. Three new zircon U–Pb ages of 243.3 ± 1.7 Ma, 237.1 ± 5.1 Ma, and 257.0 ± 4.0 Ma were obtained for these granitoids. The late Permian Chahe granite (257 Ma) is weakly peraluminous to peraluminous, and has rare earth element patterns and Ga/Al and FeOT/MgO ratios typical of A‐type granites formed in an extensional tectonic setting. The Middle Triassic Baomei granitoids (243–237 Ma) are weakly peraluminous, and exhibit a negative correlation between P2O5 and SiO2, which is typical of I‐type granites. All the granitoids have EM II‐type‐enriched mantle Sr–Nd isotopic compositions, which indicate that they were derived from a mantle source that had experienced enrichment and metasomatism. Hainan Island was in an extensional tectonic setting from the late Permian to Middle Triassic when widespread A‐ and I‐type granites were generated. We speculate that Hainan Island was mainly affected by the Tethyan tectonic domain during the Permian–Triassic, which involved closure of the Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean, collision of the Indochina and South China blocks, and subsequent post‐collisional extension. Rare earth, with the reputation of "industrial vitamins", has become a strategic key metal for industrial powers with increasingly significant industrial application value. As a unique rare earth resource, ionic rare earth ore (IREO) has the outstanding advantages of complete composition, rich resource reserves, low radioactivity, and high comprehensive utilization value. IREO is the main source of medium and heavy rare earth raw materials, which are in great demand all over the world. Since the discovery of IREO, it has attracted extensive attention. Scientists in China and the around world have carried out a lot of research and practical work and achieved a series of important breakthroughs. This paper introduces the discovery process, metallogenic causes, deposit characteristics, and the prospecting research progress of IREO, so as to deepen the understanding of the global distribution of ionic rare earth resources and the prospecting direction of ionic rare earth deposits. The leaching principle of IREO, the innovation of leaching process, the influencing factors and technological development of in situ leaching process, and the technical adaptability of in situ leaching process are reviewed. The development of leachate purification and rare earth extraction technology is summarized. We aim to provide guidance for the industrial development of IREO through the above review analysis. Additionally, the problems existing in the development of IREO are pointed out from the aspects of technology, economy, and the environment. Ultimately, a series of suggestions are put forward, such as the development of ammonium free extraction technology in the whole exploitation process of in situ leaching and leachate purification and rare earth precipitation, research on enhancing of seepage and mass transfer process, and research on the development of new technologies for impurity removal of leachate and extraction of rare earth, so as to promote the development of green and efficient exploitation new technologies and sustainable development of ionic rare earth ore. The Kelameili Ocean was one branch of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean, the initiation and closure history of which remains elusive. Consequently, they hamper our understanding of the accretionary evolution of the southern Altaids. In this paper, we carried out field mapping and also geochronological and geochemical analyses on the Huangcaopo Group in the northern Harlik Mountains, NW China. Field investigation revealed that "block‐in‐matrix" structure develops with blocks of andesite, limestone, sandstone, and gabbro in matrices of turbidites. Combined with our recent work, our field investigation indicates that the Huangcaopo Group is the southern extension of the Kelameili accretionary complex. A gabbro block (19HAM057) was dated at 500 ± 4 Ma, its geochemical affinity was defined to be similar to arc magmatic rocks. Magmatisms represented by two gabbroic intrusions (19HAM057‐2 and 19HAM048) were dated at the latest Devonian (360 ± 5 Ma) and the latest Carboniferous (299 ± 4 Ma), respectively. Their geochemistry displays enrichments in light rare earth elements (LREE) and large ion lithophile elements (LILE), but depletions in high field strength elements (HFSE, especially Nb and Ta). And a younger gabbroic intrusion (19HAM052) yielded crystallization age of the latest Permian (254 ± 3 Ma), and its geochemistry also shows affinity to arc magmatism. The magmatism represented by the gabbro block (19HAM057) was coeval with the Zhaheba‐Aermantai ophiolite, indicating that it was the product of incipient arc magmatism following subduction initiation in the Kelameili branch of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean. However, two episodes of gabbroic magmas (19HAM057‐2 and 19HAM048) that intruded the Kelameili accretionary complex from the latest Devonian to latest Carboniferous indicate southward rollback of the subducting Kelameili oceanic lithosphere and resulted in the development of a growing arc. Meanwhile, the youngest gabbroic intrusion (19HAM052) suggests that northward subduction of the Kelameili oceanic lithosphere may have at least lasted to the latest Permian, indicating that the closure of the Kelameili Ocean might have been later than the latest Permian, most likely in the early Triassic. Our new data provide further constraints on the initiation and closure history of the Kelameili Ocean, which shed light on the accretionary evolution of the Altaids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Zn-5%Al-rare earth alloy coating has been used in High-Vanadium Full-Locked Cable (HVFLC) that is made in China. This application has shown excellent protective performance. However, during practical use, the coating may appear to be deteriorated in various degrees, which may further worsen the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the cable. This paper focuses on High-Vanadium Full-Locked Cable (HVFLC). Firstly, different types of prefabricated defect treatments have been applied into the wires of the cable, followed by corrosion paste accelerated corrosion test and mechanical tensile properties test. The aim of this act is to figure out the effects on the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the wire due to different types of defects in alloy plating. The results show that the corrosion resistance of the wires has been greatly affected because of the solder joint defects. Furthermore, the tensile strength of the wire indicates a drop of about 40%. The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is one of the largest accretionary orogenic collages in the world with prominent juvenile crust addition, where the southernmost margin of the CAOB located is one hot topic in the international studies. The Dunhuang Block located to the south of the Beishan Orogen is a key position for outlining the tectonic framework of the south margin of the CAOB. However, at present, the tectonic attribution of the Dunhuang Block is still controversial. In this paper, we focus on the origins and protoliths of the meta‐mafic rocks from the Hongliuxia complex in the southern Dunhuang Block for determining the tectonic attribution of the Dunhuang Block. In the field, the meta‐mafic rocks are mainly exposed as tectonic blocks within the metasedimentary rocks displaying the "block‐in‐matrix" fabrics or as tectonic slices juxtaposed by faults. Geochemically, the meta‐mafic rocks could be divided into three groups based on the rare earth elements (REE) and trace elements: the group 1 samples are depleted in the LREE relative to HREE and show flat HREE patterns, similar to the mid‐oceanic ridge basalt; the group 2 samples show flat REE patterns without obvious differentiation between the LREE and HREE, like the oceanic plateau basalt; the group 3 samples are enriched in LREE relative to LREE, and have negative Nb, Ta, and Ti anomalies, similar to the island arc basalt. Conclusively, the protoliths of the meta‐mafic rocks dominantly belong to the oceanic plate components. They were metamorphosed during Early Silurian to Middle Devonian in different depths of the subduction zone documented in previous studies. So, we suggest the Hongliuxia complex is an exhumed Palaeozoic subduction–accretion complex (SAC) formed during the oceanic plate subduction. This result confirms the Palaeozoic subduction event occurred in the Dunhuang region and indicates that the Dunhuang Block is a Palaeozoic Orogen rather than a part of Precambrian continent block. The Devonian volcanic rocks are widely distributed in the East Junggar (Xinjiang, NW China), preserving important magmatic records for investigating Palaeozoic tectonic evolution. The Beitashan Formation is mainly composed of pyroclastic rocks and sedimentary rocks in the lower section and intermediate–basic volcanic lava and pyroclastic rocks in the upper section. In this paper, we present geochronological, geochemical, and in situ Lu–Hf isotopic data for Beitashan Formation volcanic rocks from the East Junggar. Zircon U–Pb analyses from a basalt sample by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry yielded a weighted mean age of 387.8 ± 4.5 Ma, indicating that it was generated in the Middle Devonian. The basic–intermediate volcanic rocks are tholeiitic to calc‐alkalic and are characterized by MgO (2.29–5.91 wt.%), low TiO2 (0.75–1.36 wt.%), and relatively high Al2O3 (15.82–16.73 wt.%). Furthermore, they display enrichment in light rare‐earth elements and large‐ion lithophile elements (such as Ba and Sr) and depletion in Nb, Ta, and Ti, along with slightly positive Eu anomalies (δEu = 0.83–1.15) and Ce anomalies (δCe = 1.00–1.11). In addition, in situ zircon Hf isotopic analyses from basalt samples show εHf(t) values ranging from +4.33 to +15.2, indicating a depleted mantle source with minor crustal contamination. They also show relatively low Nb/Zr (0.04–0.06), Th/Yb (0.67–3.83), and Ba/La (6.79–67.53) and high Ce/Th (7.71–18.94), Ba/Rb (21.39–294.28), and Ba/Th (31.42–486.58). The geochemical data suggest these rocks were likely derived from 10% to 30% partial melting of a garnet‐rich with minor spinel‐bearing Iherzolite depleted mantle metasomatized by slab‐derived fluids, with crustal contamination. Combined with the geological setting and previous studies, we suggest that the northern East Junggar was in a northward‐subducted island‐arc setting in the Devonian. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carboniferous magmatism in the Darbut region is critical for understanding the evolutionary history of the accretionary orogenesis of the West Junggar area in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. In this paper, zircon U–Pb geochronological, whole‐rock geochemical and Sr–Nd–Pb–Hf isotopic analyses of the basalts, basaltic andesite, and dacite from the Carboniferous Tailegula Formation, Darbut region, have been performed. The magmatic zircons from basalt, basaltic andesite, and dacite yield concordia U–Pb isotope ages of 344 ± 4, 347 ± 3, and 340 ± 5 Ma, respectively, which are interpreted as the crystallization ages of these rocks. The basalts and basaltic andesite are characterized by an alkali composition; high Nb/Yb, Th/Yb, Ta/Yb, La/Sm, and Sm/Yb trace element ratios and Pb isotopic ratios; moderate (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios; low (143Nb/144Nb)i ratios; and positive εNd(t) (+0.66 − +4.73) and εHf(t) (+1.7 − +15.2) values. These characteristics indicate that the magmas were derived from mixed mantle sources, that is, enriched mantle sources and high U/Pb ratio mantle (HIMU) component sources with ≤10% partial melting of garnet and spinel lherzolite. The samples display pronounced light rare earth elements (LREEs) and incompatible element enrichment patterns with positive Nb–Ta anomalies and a high Pb content and Nb/La ratios but low (Th/Nb)N ratios and a lower degree of partial melting, implying that these rocks were formed in a continental extensional setting. Based on our results and that of previous studies, we conclude that the early Carboniferous volcanic rocks in the Darbut region formed by mantle plume or regional‐scale mantle upwelling in a continental extensional setting after closure of the Junggar Ocean. This research delves into the intricate nexus of particle size, mineralogical composition, surface attributes, elemental mapping, and rare earth element (REE) adsorption mechanisms within an ion-adsorption clay sample from South America. The investigation entails the fractionation of the ion-adsorption clay into three size categories: S1 (< 0.25 mm), S2 (0.25–0.5 mm), and S3 (0.5–2 mm). Each fraction undergoes meticulous characterization to unveil its elemental composition, mineralogical composition, surface area, morphological characteristics, elemental mapping, and the mechanisms governing REE incorporation. The results indicate that S1 has 31% physiosorbed, 8% chemisorbed, and 61% mineralized REEs, while S2 has 40% physiosorbed, 5% chemisorbed, and 55% mineralized REEs, and S3 has 24% physiosorbed, 5% chemisorbed, and 71% mineralized REEs. The physisorbed REEs are attributed to the presence of kaolinite, conducive to mostly physisorption. In terms of grain size and REE content/type relationship, the results show that REE content decreases with increasing grain size; however, there is not a clear trend in terms of REE occurrence modes with grain size. Heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) are discernibly favored in adsorption over light rare earth elements (LREEs). This preference is underpinned by the weathering processes that led to the formation of ion-adsorption clay, which facilitated the transport and accumulation of HREEs. Notably, the ion-adsorption clay encompasses a substantial content of mineralized REEs, necessitating more demanding extraction methodologies, such as acid baking followed by water leaching if complete extraction of all REEs is desired. Among the desorbable REEs, physisorption dominates, encompassing over 80% of the total. Chemisorbed REEs exhibit versatility in association with various minerals, encompassing kaolinite, quartz, and goethite. In essence, this study unveils the intricate interplay between particle dimensions, mineralogical constitution, surface attributes, and REE adsorption modes within this ion-adsorption clay sample. The ion-adsorption clay in this study contains a significant portion of mineralized REEs that cannot be extracted using the mild conditions typically employed for the desorption process. Additionally, the REE concentration in this ion-adsorption clay is notably higher than the average found in clay deposits worldwide, reaching levels comparable to those of regolith deposits in China, which are a major global source of REEs. A-type granites generally have much lower water, higher temperature, and incompatible element concentrations than I-type granitoids. Yet it remains unclear why I-A-type granitic complexes occur in convergent plate margins. Here we conduct geochemical analyses on apatite and mafic minerals from the late Cretaceous I-A-type granitic complex in Fuzhou area, SE China, aiming to decipher differentiation, fluid metasomatism, and degassing that primarily control the compositional diversity of felsic magmas. Apatites in both rock types are F-rich and show large H2O and δD variations, i.e., 341–3892 ppm H2O and –325 to +336‰ δD in I-type granitoids; 67–1366 ppm H2O and –251 to +1439‰ δD in A-type granites. H2O in apatite is negatively correlated with La/Sm and Sr/Y in the I-type granitoids, whereas it is positively correlated with Ce and total rare earth element (REE) concentrations in the A-type granites. Once H2O increases up to hundreds of ppm, both rock types show a rapid decrease of H2O/Ce, an increase of F/Cl, and extensive H isotope fractionation. Arfvedsonite occurs as a late crystallizing mineral in the A-type granite and has much higher contents of Na2O, K2O, F, and high field strength elements (HFSE) than hornblende in the I-type granitoids, indicating the addition of F-HFSE-rich alkaline fluids during its magmatic evolution. The consumption of arfvedsonite and formation of aegirine further indicate the role of fluid metasomatism and H2 degassing via a reaction of 3Na3Fe5Si8O22(OH)2 + 2H2O = 9NaFeSi2O6 + 2Fe3O4 + 6SiO2+5H2. The combined geochemical data demonstrate that the systematic differences in mineral assemblage, whole-rock composition, magma temperature, H2O content, and δD of apatite between the I- and A-type granites are likely attributed to varying degrees of differentiation, fluid metasomatism and magmatic degassing. The I-type granitoids experienced hornblende, biotite, plagioclase, K-feldspar, and apatite fractionation and close-system degassing. The A-type granite was likely formed from the I-type monzogranitic magma that was metasomatized by the mantle-derived F-HFSE-rich alkaline fluids to produce the peralkaline magma, which further experienced K-feldspar + plagioclase + biotite + apatite fractionation and open-system degassing. Further numerical estimation indicates that the primary magma of Fuzhou granitic complex contained ~3.0 wt% H2O, and the lower water content of A-type granite was likely attributed to strong degassing during its emplacement. Our results indicate that some peralkaline A-type granites can be generated from relatively water-poor I-type granitic magmas by fluid metasomatism and degassing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rare earth elements sources in China have been overexploited and have caused serious soil pollution. The hyperaccumulator Dicranopteris dichotoma was discovered to have the ability to remove rare earth elements from contaminated soil and was widely planted as part of the remediation process for rare earth elements contaminated soil. Therefore, abundant hazardous Dicranopteris dichotoma biomass containing a high concentration of rare earth elements was generated. However, treatment methods for Dicranopteris dichotoma have not been previously investigated. In this paper, the eco-friendly technology of vacuum-pyrolysis-condensation was proposed for disposing the biomass of this fern, it was employed to change biomass accumulated with rare earth elements in to chemical resource. Ethylene oxide was the main component of the chemical resources, constituting 49.4 wt%. However, no ethylene oxide was detected in the pyrolytic products from non-accumulated biomass. The residual ash contained 6160 mg kg−1 of rare earth elements and was suggested as a rich 'bio-ore' of rare earth elements. No hazardous wastes were produced in the reclamation of these hyperaccumulators. We concluded that rare earth elements strongly influenced the pyrolysis process of dicranopteris dichotoma biomass and caused the generation of ethylene oxide. This paper takes the vacuum-pyrolysis-condensation of rare earth elements accumulated Dicranopteris dichotoma as the guidance, in order to attract more attention and develop more eco-friendly disposal technologies for hyperaccumulator biomass from the remediation process of contaminated soil, recovering the biomass resources and realized its high value. This paper reports on the petrography, geochemistry, and geochronology of late Mesozoic volcanic rocks in the Wenkutu area of the northern Great Xing'an Range, North‐east China, and discusses the formation age, petrogenesis, and tectonic environment of the Manketouebo, Manitu, Baiyingaolao, and Meiletu formations. Results of Zircon U–Pb dating show that the volcanic rocks in the Wenkutu area were formed during the Early Cretaceous (Manketouebo Formation at 145 ± 1 Ma, Manitu Formation at 141.3 ± 1.7 Ma, Baiyingaolao Formation at 128.7 ± 1.1 Ma, and Meiletu Formation at 129 ± 1 Ma). The Manketouebo, Manitu, and Baiyingaolao formations are dominated by intermediate to acid volcanic rocks that belong to the high‐K calc‐alkaline series, with Eu/Eu* values of 0.38–0.84.They are enriched in light rare earth elements (LREE) and depleted in heavy rare earth elements (HREE). The Meiletu Formation is dominated by intermediate to basic volcanic rocks, belongs to the high‐K calc‐alkaline series, has Eu/Eu* values of 0.89–0.97, and is enriched in Ba, K, Th, U, La, Ce, Sr, Nd, and Hf but relatively depleted in Nb, Ta, Zr, P, and Ti, with no obvious fractionation of LREE and HREE. Results indicate that the magma of the Manketouebo, Manitu, and Baiyingaolao formations had a crustal origin, whereas the Meiletu Formation was sourced from the mantle and subsequently contaminated by crustal materials. The late Mesozoic volcanic rocks in the study area were formed during an orogenic stage, and the compressional environment was caused by subduction of the paleo‐Pacific Plate below the Asian continental plate. The Eastern Yanbian area, Northeast China is tectonically located in the easternmost margin of the Xing'an Mongolian Orogenic Belt, which is a key area for providing important evidence of mineral deposits to constrain the tectonic evolution of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. Five quartz‐vein‐type scheelite deposits have been identified in the eastern Yanbian area. These deposits are hosted within the late Palaeozoic metamorphic and granitic rocks and form under the identical hydrothermal mineralization. Zircon U–Pb ages and whole‐rock geochemistry of the ore‐hosting biotite granite and Sm–Nd ages of scheelite crystals within quartz veins are presented in this paper. Zircon U–Pb dating of the biotite granite yields a weighted mean age of 251.9 ± 2.2 Ma (mean standard weighted deviation (MSWD) = 4), and Sm–Nd dating of scheelite samples yields an isochron age of 251.7 ± 2.9 Ma (MSWD = 0.87), which constrains the scheelite mineralization in Eastern Yanbian to the late Permian. Our results, integrated with published geochronological data, indicate three periods of Phanerozoic W mineralization in Northeast China, (a) Cambrian, (b) late Permian (this work), and (c) Jurassic. Geochemical data reveal that the biotite granite is a calc‐alkaline I‐type granite, and it exhibits enrichment in large‐ion lithophile and light rare earth elements and depletion in high‐field‐strength and heavy rare earth elements (especially in Nb and Ta), consistent with the characteristics of arc magma. The subduction‐related biotite granite intrusion and quartz‐vein‐type scheelite mineralization together indicate that the Paleo‐Asian Ocean had not closed before the late Permian in the Eastern Yanbian area, and its final closure occurred in the Early‐Middle Triassic. The late Permian subduction of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean induced the partial melting of the lower crust, thus forming the magmatic arc activity and related quartz‐vein‐type scheelite mineralization, which clearly justifies the proposed tectonic–metallogenic model. The Kaiyuan tectonic mélange makes up the western part of the Kaiyuan–Yanji Accretionary Complex Belt, NE China, and there has been a long‐standing controversy about its age and tectonic setting. In this paper, we present new zircon U–Pb ages and geochemical data for the mafic rocks of the Lujiapuzi Formation in the Kaiyuan tectonic mélange, and these data provide insights into the tectonic setting during the late Paleozoic and the evolutionary history of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean in the eastern segment of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). SHRIMP U–Pb dating of zircons from samples of albite–actinolite schist and amphibolite yielded a crystallization age of 258 ± 5.5 Ma for the protoliths, suggesting that the protoliths formed during the late Permian. The albite–actinolite schists and amphibolites have similar geochemical characteristics, and they represent metamorphosed basaltic volcanic rocks. Major, rare earth and trace element data show that the mafic rocks have a close affinity with mid‐ocean ridge basalt. REE petrogenetic modelling indicates that the primary magma was generated through the partial melting of a mixed garnet‐ and spinel‐bearing mantle source, and assimilated crustal material and underwent crystal fractionation during ascent. The geochemical features and inherited/xenocrystic zircons in the mafic samples indicate that they formed in a tectonic setting similar to the back‐arc basin. These new findings, together with other previously published data, indicate that the Paleo‐Asian Ocean still existed in the eastern segment of the CAOB during the late Permian to Early Triassic. The Kaiyuan tectonic mélange formed during the Middle Triassic, and its formation may represent the timing of final closure of the Paleo‐Asian Ocean. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Early Precambrian magmatism in the Archean–Palaeoproterozoic basement Yudongzi Complex is critical for understanding the early crustal formation and evolutionary history of the Yangtze Block in the South China Craton. In this paper, combined zircon UPb geochronological, zircon Hf isotopic, and whole‐rock geochemical studies are carried out on the granitoid gneisses from the Yudongzi Complex, north‐western Yangtze Block. The magmatic zircons from the granitoid gneiss yield a UPb upper intercept age of 2,477±18 Ma, interpreted as the crystallization age of the granitoid gneiss. The granitoid gneiss samples are characterized by high Al2O3 contents, moderate to high Sr/Y, (La/Yb)N and Na2O/K2O ratios, no obvious Eu and Sr anomalies, and depleted Nb, Ta, and Ti values that are similar to those of Archean trondhjemite–tonalite–granodiorite (TTG) suites, indicating that the investigated rocks belonging to TTG‐series rocks. They display pronounced enriched‐LREE patterns with high La/Yb values and relatively high Zr/Sm and Eu/Eu* but low Nb/Ta and Dy/Yb ratios, implying that these rocks were formed by partial melting within amphibolite‐facies conditions with mainly residual amphibole, garnet, and accessory rutile in the magma source. These rocks also display apparently low MgO, Mg#, Ni, and Cr contents, suggesting derivation from partial melting of thickened ancient lower crust. Zircon εHf(t) values from the granitoid gneiss sample vary from −10.1 to −6.9 with TDM2 of ca. 3.59–3.40 Ga, what demonstrates their crustal source nature as well. Thus, taking all these factors together, we propose that the ca. 2.48 Ga granitoid gneisses in the Yudongzi Complex might have been produced by partial melting of ancient crust material under amphibolite‐facies conditions, with primarily residual assemblages of amphibole, garnet, and attached rutile. Taking together our new data and such from previous studies, the Yangtze Block has been probably involved into a significant reworking of ancient crust event during the Early Palaeoproterozoic time. The tectonic setting of the Alxa Tectonic Belt (ATB) during the late Palaeozoic is highly controversial. The nature and tectonic origin of the late Palaeozoic magmatism in the ATB are key to resolving the current controversy. This paper provides field, petrographic, geochemical, and zircon U‐Pb‐Hf isotopic data for the late Palaeozoic granitoids and volcanic rocks from the south‐western ATB. The granitoids display a wide range of SiO2 contents from diorite, granodiorite, to granites, with widely distributed hydrous minerals such as hornblende and biotite. They are calc‐alkaline to high‐potassium calc‐alkaline, metaluminous with an enrichment of light rare earth elements and large‐ion lithophile elements (LILE), and a depletion of high‐field‐strength elements (HFSE). The presence of mafic‐intermediate enclaves in the plutons suggests the role of crust–mantle interaction in generating the granitoids. The volcanic rocks show "block‐in‐matrix" structures in the field. They are dacite‐porphyry and rhyolite and show calc‐alkaline characteristics with an enrichment of LILE and a depletion of HFSE. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry zircon U‐Pb dating shows that the granitoids and enclaves crystallized during ~317–287 Ma and the dacite porphyry formed at ~295 Ma. Hf‐in‐zircon isotopic compositions reveal predominately positive εHf (t) values and Neoproterozoic TDMC ages for the magmatic rocks, indicating mixing between mantle‐derived magma and Precambrian basement during their genesis. The diagnostic field, geochemical data, and isotopic data imply these rocks were generated in a subduction‐related active continental margin setting. The presence of A2‐type granite indicates an extensional environment resulted from slab rollback in a retreating accretionary context can best interpret the large‐scale late Carboniferous–early Permian magmatism in the ATB. Our new data, combined with published data, imply that a large active continental margin existed in the Beishan, Alxa, and the northern margin of the North China Craton, due to the south‐dipping subduction of the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean (PAO) in the late Palaeozoic. Chinese rare earth export policies currently result in accelerating its depletion. Thus adopting an optimal export trade selection strategy is crucial to determining and ultimately identifying the ideal trading partners. This paper introduces a multi-attribute decision-making methodology which is then used to select the optimal trading partner. In the method, an evaluation criteria system is established to assess the seven top trading partners based on three dimensions: political relationships, economic benefits and industrial security. Specifically, a simple additive weighing model derived from an additive utility function is utilized to calculate, rank and select alternatives. Results show that Japan would be the optimal trading partner for Chinese rare earths. The mineralogical and geochemical compositions of the Lopingian coals from an exploratory drill core (ZK4-1) in the Zhongliangshan Coalfield, southwestern China are reported in this paper. The Zhongliangshan coals are medium volatile bituminous in rank (random vitrinite reflectance, average 1.38%), characterized by a medium-ash yield (26.84%) and high sulfur content (3.38%). Minerals in the Zhongliangshan coals are mainly composed of clay assemblages (kaolinite, the illite/smectite mixed layer (I/S) and chamosite), pyrite, quartz, carbonate minerals (calcite, marcasite, ankerite, and dolomite), and anatase, followed by rutile, jarosite, natrojarosite, bassanite, gypsum and K-feldspar, with traces of apatite, rhabdophane and barite. Compared with the average concentrations of the world hard coals, some trace elements including Li, V, Co, Cu, Se, Y, Zr, Nb, rare earth elements (REE), Cd, Ta, Hf and Hg, are enriched in the Zhongliangshan coals. The modes of occurrence of chamosite, barite, rhabdophane, quartz and calcite in the Zhongliangshan coals indicate that the coals have probably been affected by the injection of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids. Based on the concentrations of Sc, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn, the ratios of Al2O3/TiO2 and the upper continental crust-normalized rare earth element and yttrium (REY) distribution patterns of the Zhongliangshan coals, the dominant sediment source regions are the Leshan-Longnvsi Uplift, Hannan Upland, and Dabashan Uplift, with a small proportion of terrigenous materials from the Kangdian Upland. The Moganshan Volcanic Basin is located in the northeastern section of the Ganhang volcanic-tectonic-uranium polymetallic metallogenic belt. To explore the uranium mineralization potential of these volcanic rocks, petrographic, elemental geochemical, zircon U-Pb chronology, and Sr-Nd-Pb isotope analyses were performed on the volcanic rocks in the Moganshan Basin. The results showed that the volcanic rocks within the Moganshan Basin were formed at 130.8 ± 2.0 Ma; In addition, they are Si-rich (SiO2 content of 72.98%-77.32%), alkali-rich (Na2O+ K2O, with ALK values of =7.15-9.74), and potassium-rich (K2O/Na2O content of 1.41-4.34), with light rare earth elements (Rb, Th Nd, Zr, and Hf). Further more, the volcanic rocks within the Moganshan Basin are deficient in Ba, Ta, Nb, and Sr, with a negative europium anomaly ^Eu of 0.10-0.17), high ISr (0.71028-0.71160), low sNd(t) values (-6.43-5.77), and other characteristics. The geological characteristics of the volcanic rocks in the Moganshan Basin are the same as those of the volcanic rocks in eastern China, and the formation age is Early Cretaceous. The formation environment is intra- land extensional and tensional. The rock-forming material primarily originates from the upper crust and has a higher average uranium content than that in the Ganhang volcanic belt. Globally, most organic-rich shales are deposited with volcanic ash layers. Volcanic ash, a source for many sedimentary basins, can affect the sedimentary water environment, alter the primary productivity, and preserve the organic matter (OM) through physical, chemical, and biological reactions. With an increasing number of breakthroughs in shale oil exploration in the Bohai Bay Basin in recent years, less attention has been paid to the crucial role of volcanic impact especially its influence on the OM enrichment and hydrocarbon formation. Here, we studied the petrology, mineralogy, and geochemical characteristics of the organic-rich shale in the upper submember of the fourth member (Es4 1) and the lower submember of the third member (Es3 3) of the Shahejie Formation, aiming to better understand the volcanic impact on organic-rich shale formation. Our results show that total organic carbon is higher in the upper shale intervals rich in volcanic ash with enriched light rare earth elements and moderate Eu anomalies. This indicates that volcanism promoted OM formation before or after the eruption. The positive correlation between Eu/Eu* and Post-Archean Australian Shale indicates hydrothermal activity before the volcanic eruption. The plane graph of the hydrocarbon-generating intensity (S1þS2) suggests that the heat released by volcanism promoted hydrocarbon generation. Meanwhile, the nutrients carried by volcanic ash promoted biological blooms during Es4 1 and Es3 3 deposition, yielding a high primary productivity. Biological blooms consume large amounts of oxygen and form anoxic environments conducive to the burial and preservation of OM. Therefore, this study helps to further understand the organic-inorganic interactions caused by typical geological events and provides a guide for the next step of shale oil exploration and development in other lacustrine basins in China. Potential toxic elements (PTEs), including Pb, Cr, Cd, Ni, Cu, As, and Mo, are common pollutants in ion-adsorption rare earth mines (IAREEMs), and atmospheric deposition is an important method of PTE migration. However, the level of PTE atmospheric deposition in and around IAREEMs remains unknown. We established 25 stations at typical sites in the Ganzhou city of southeast China. An exposure assessment model was used to evaluate the health risks for adults and children. The results show that the concentration and fluxes of atmospheric deposition of PTEs follow the order of Pb > Cu > Cr > Ni > As > Mo > Cd, and most PTEs present no human health risk. However, due to the high toxicty of As, it poses both carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks to children as indicated by the analysis of an exposure assessment model of heavy rare earth minerals in Longnan county, Ganzhou city. The As concentration in atmospheric deposition ranged from 3.18 to 251.87 mg kg−1, and the As atmospheric fluxes in atmospheric deposition ranged from 0.11 to 39.4 mg m−2 y−1. This is because As-rich materials (e.g., arsenic-adsorbing clay zones and chernovite-(Y) (Y[AsO4])) are exposed in fully weathered layers, and the formed suspended particulate matter is transported into the atmosphere at Longnan county. Consequently, restoring vegetation to reduce particulate matter transport is an important method for controlling the spread of pollutants. The nephrite belt in the Altun Mountain–Western Kunlun Mountain region, which extends about 1300 km in Xinjiang, NW China, is the largest nephrite deposit in the world. The Qiemo region in the Altun Mountains is a crucial nephrite-producing area in China, with demonstrated substantial prospects for future exploration. While existing research has extensively investigated secondary nephrite deposits in the Karakash River and native black nephrite deposits in Guangxi Dahua, a comprehensive investigation of black nephrite from original deposits in Xinjiang is lacking. Margou black-toned nephrite was recently found in primary deposits in Qiemo County, Xinjiang; this makes in-depth research on the characteristics of this mine necessary. A number of technical analytical methods such as polarizing microscopy, Ultra-Deep Three-Dimensional Microscope, electron microprobe, back-scattered electron image analysis, X-ray fluorescence, and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were employed for this research. An experimental test was conducted to elucidate the chemical and mineralogical composition, further clarifying the genetic types of the black and black cyan nephrite from the Margou deposit in Qiemo, Xinjiang. The results reveal that the nephrite is mainly composed of tremolite–actinolite, characterized by Mg/(Mg + Fe2+) ratios ranging from 0.86 to 1.0. Minor minerals include diopside, epidote, pargasite, apatite, zircon, pyrite, and magnetite. Bulk-rock rare earth element (REE) patterns exhibit distinctive features, such as negative Eu anomalies (δEu = 0.00–0.17), decreasing light REEs, a relatively flat distribution of heavy REEs, and low total REE concentrations (1.6–38.9 μg/g); furthermore, the Cr (6–21 μg/g) and Ni (2.5–4.5 μg/g) contents are remarkably low. The magmatic influence of granite appears to be a fundamental factor in the genesis of the magnesian skarn hosting Margou nephrite. The distinctive black and black cyan colors are attributed to heightened iron content, mainly associated with FeO (0.08~6.29 wt.%). China's rare earth reserves and consumption are the highest in the world. Rare earth metals and alloys play a pivotal role in the domains of permanent magnetic materials, hydrogen storage materials, luminescent materials, abrasive materials, etc. The molten salt electrolysis process is the most widely used method for producing light rare earth metals and alloys in China, with distinct advantages such as continuous production and short process flow. This article focuses on the process technology of preparing rare earth metals and alloys by electrolyzing rare earth oxides in fluoride systems. This article summarizes the effects of process parameters such as cathode and anode structures, electrolysis temperature, and current density on the direct recovery and current efficiency of the preparation of light rare earth metals (La, Ce, Pr, Nd), RE–Mg (RE for rare earth) alloys, RE–Al alloys, RE–Ni alloys, and other rare earth alloys. Meanwhile, the disadvantages of the electrolytic cells and electrode configurations that are currently used in industrial production are discussed. The Songliao Basin is rich in uranium ores, and the Yaojia Formation, which is dominated by gray fine-grained sandstones, contains the main ore-bearing stratum. Rocks in the formation contain high SiO2, Al2O3, and total alkali, with enrichment in Rb, Th, U, K, and light rare earth elements but are depleted in high field strength elements, similar to upper crustal rocks. U–Pb dating of zircon grains from sandstones in the formation yielded four groups of ages, including 99–182, 202–245, 284–365, and 1800–1900 Ma. These ages combined with the Hf isotope composition, geochemical characteristics, and regional history suggest that the Yaojia Formation rocks are associated with passive and active continental margin settings. These clastic rocks originate principally from felsic rocks in the Zhangguangcailing–Xiao Xing'anling area, and these were deposited in oxic freshwater environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Granites, widely distributed in the Earth's crust, undergo pedogenic processes, shaping diverse soil-mantled landscapes influenced by climatic factors in different regions. Investigating the geochemical signatures in granite weathering profiles across varying climatic conditions provides valuable insights into the intricate interplay between weathering and landscape evolution. In this study, the geochemical features, particularly major and rare earth elements, and the weathering degree of granites across temperate to subtropical regions in China were examined. The results indicated significant variations in the geochemical characteristics of granite weathering profiles, both at a pedon and regional scale (p < 0.01). With increasing hydrothermal conditions from north to south, soil pH shifted from neutral to acidic, accompanied by the leaching of major elements (K2O, Na2O, CaO, and MgO) and the enrichment of Al and Fe. The total rare earth elements (∑REEs) ranged from 75 to 352 ppm, and light rare earth elements (LREEs) from 71 to 317 ppm, exhibiting less significant variations across the study area, while heavy rare earth elements (HREEs) showed higher concentrations in the subtropical region (3 to 35 ppm). Plagioclases dominated the weathering process in temperate regions, with K-feldspar progressively increasing and, eventually, dominating from temperate to subtropic regions, resulting in a shift in clay minerals from 2:1-type in the temperate to 1:1-type in the subtropic. The chemical index of alteration (CIA) and comprehensive weathering index (W) increased from fresh rock to residual soils along the weathering profiles and from north to south across the study area, ranging from 50.72 to 97.44 and 35.11 to 70.62, respectively. The intensified granite weathering degree was significantly influenced by climatic conditions (p < 0.05), especially the multi-year average precipitation (22.4%) and relative humidity (9.1%) (p < 0.01). Gully erosion on the granite weathering mantle was concentrated in granites with a comprehensive weathering index exceeding 52.51, and the spatial variation of the granite weathering degree aligned with the spatial distribution of gully density across the study area. Scheelite, one kind of common REE-rich and U-bearing hydrothermal mineral, is extensively developed in various types of gold deposits, which can be used to record nature and timing of metallogenesis. The Zhaishang Carlin-like gold deposit in the Qinling Orogen is a giant Au deposit, hosting 127t of Au @ 2.67 g/t with economic concentrations of tungsten and antimony. The study reports two types of scheelite based on the characteristics of petrography and geochemistry. Sch A shows significant oscillatory zoning with dark gray cathodoluminescence (CL) response, whereas Sch B displays patchy textures with brighter CL response. Systematic LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating of Sch A and Sch B yields ages of 227.1 ± 3.2 Ma and 226.2 ± 6.9 Ma, respectively. The new dates, constraining the Zhaishang Au–W mineralization to ~ 227Ma, coincide well with the western Qinling magmatism, metallogenic and tectonic events. There are significant variations in concentration, the Sch A has low REE content (mean = 41.3 ppm), negative Eu-anomaly with slightly positive Ce-anomaly, whereas Sch B, with small negative or positive Eu-anomaly, has higher REE content (mean = 247 ppm) and higher positive Ce-anomaly. The positive correlation of EuN and EuN* records oxidizing condition during the whole W mineralization event. Additionally, Sch B intergrown with selenides with an increase in the Ce-anomaly supports that the latter has higher oxygen fugacity environment. The Sr isotope signature for scheelite supports that ore-forming metals mostly inherited the host rock component, while the proportion of magma-derived Sr increased in the Sch B. Fluid–rock interactions co-precipitated Au and W caused by the release of Fe and Ca cations and the increase of pH. The study highlights that scheelite as a recorder can help in deciphering the nature and timing of metallogenesis of the studied Au–Sb–W deposit, and thus other similar Au–W deposits. The cao vit gibbon (Nomascus nasutus) is one of the rarest primates on Earth and now only survives in a single forest patch of less than 5000 ha on the Vietnam–China border. Accurate monitoring of the last remaining population is critical to inform ongoing conservation interventions and track conservation success over time. However, traditional methods for monitoring gibbons, involving triangulation of groups from their songs, are inherently subjective and likely subject to considerable measurement errors. To overcome this, we aimed to use 'vocal fingerprinting' to distinguish the different singing males in the population. During the 2021 population survey, we complemented the traditional observations made by survey teams with a concurrent passive acoustic monitoring array. Counts of gibbon group sizes were also assisted with a UAV-mounted thermal camera. After identifying eight family groups in the acoustic data and incorporating long-term data, we estimate that the population was comprised of 74 individuals in 11 family groups, which is 38% smaller than previously thought. We have no evidence that the population has declined—indeed it appears to be growing, with new groups having formed in recent years—and the difference is instead due to double-counting of groups in previous surveys employing the triangulation method. Indeed, using spatially explicit capture-recapture modelling, we uncovered substantial measurement error in the bearings and distances from field teams. We also applied semi- and fully-automatic approaches to clustering the male calls into groups, finding no evidence that we had missed any males with the manual approach. Given the very small size of the population, conservation actions are now even more urgent, in particular habitat restoration to allow the population to expand. Featuring subtle lithological alterations in the host rocks and containing colossal gemstone crystals, the scheelite deposit at Xuebaoding in the Pingwu region of Sichuan Province exhibits characteristics typical of a vein-like hydrothermal-type deposit. The scheelite from the Xuebaoding region is renowned for its high saturation of color, perfect crystal shape, and pure color. In this study, its crystal structure and mineralogical, geochemical, and in situ Sr-Nd isotope characteristics are all systematically characterized. Our objective is to determine the source of ore-forming materials, the timing of the mineralization, and the chemical composition of scheelite, including major elements, trace elements, and rare earths elements (REE). The scheelite samples were analyzed with a variety of methods such as polarizing microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), electron probing, and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). In addition, conventional gemological tests were performed using instruments including gemstone microscopes, GI-UVB ultraviolet fluorescent lamps, grating spectroscopy, etc. The results demonstrate that scheelite exhibits a high refractive index, excellent crystallinity, and a granular structure. Clear color bands and ring structures are observed within the minerals, accompanied by interference colors of light blue, blue, and yellow. Additionally, the mineral components are relatively concentrated, with muscovite and illite serving as accessory minerals. Furthermore, the chemical composition of scheelite reveals a WO3/CaO mass ratio that approaches or exceeds the ideal value. Moreover, it exhibits a wide range of variations in total rare earth element (∑REE) content, which is characterized by an enrichment of light rare earths (LREE), significant negative Eu anomalies, and insignificant Ce anomalies. In addition, the metallogenic formation of scheelite can be estimated to have occurred during the Toarcian stage in the Lower Jurassic Epoch period, approximately 183 Ma. The study further revealed that A-type granite serves as the genesis type of scheelite, with most of the ore-forming materials originating from the upper crust and a few derived from younger crustal sources. The Yama area is characterized by numerous large-scale fluorite–quartz veins that are located along faults within the widespread Late Devonian–Late Silurian syenogranites in the Tataleng granitic batholith, Qilian Orogen, Northwest China. These fluorite–quartz veins contribute to an important fluorite reserve, but their ore genesis remains unresolved so far. In this study, trace elements, rare earth elements (REEs), and hydrogen, oxygen, and strontium isotopic compositions of fluorites are analyzed. The studied fluorite samples have similar chondrite-normalized REEs, including Y patterns, with relatively strong enrichment in heavy REEs, negative Eu anomalies, strongly positive Y anomalies, and comparably invariable Y/Ho ratios of 41.43–73.79, suggesting a unique hydrothermal genesis. The relatively variable values of δD and δ18O are −77.4‰ to −102.4‰ and −12.7‰ to −4.3‰, respectively, close to the meteoric water line. These fluorites yield relatively invariable analytical 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.749089−0.756628 (except for an anomalously high ratio), and their calculated initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios, based on the ore-forming ages provided, are apparently higher than the calculated initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of syenogranite wall rocks. Collectively, the geochemistry of trace elements, REEs, and stable isotopes (H, O, and Sr) suggests that the ore-forming fluids were of meteoric origin and that the Sr sources were directly derived from the ore-forming fluids themselves rather than syenogranite wall rocks. Finally, it was considered that the Yama fluorite deposit is a fault-controlled hydrothermal vein-type deposit which was possibly related to the evolution of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean in the Permian–Triassic. This study explores the sedimentary environment and tectonic implications of the Upper Carboniferous Yanghugou Formation on the western margin of the Ordos Basin through the analysis of major elements, trace elements, and rare earth elements in 23 mudstone samples. The results indicate moderate chemical weathering conditions, as reflected in the Chemical Alteration Index (CIA) and Component Variability Index (ICV) values. Warm and humid paleoclimatic conditions are suggested by Rb/Sr, Sr/Cu, spore, and pollen fossil samples. The paleosalinity of the water is identified as a transitional phase of a brackish water environment based on Sr/Ba and Th/U ratios. Additionally, V/(V + Ni) and δU values imply a transitional phase of a weak oxidation–reduction environment for the water. In accordance with the La-Th-Sc, Th-Sc-Zr, Th-Co-Zr, (La/Yb)-∑REE, and (La/Th)-Hf discrimination diagrams, it is inferred that the study area is part of a continental marginal tectonic setting. The sediments are primarily derived from an upper-crust felsic source area. The sedimentary period of the Yanghugou Formation in the western margin of the basin is considered a marginal rift basin characterized by north–south compression and western rift extension. As the demand for personal electronic devices, wind turbines, and electric vehicles increases, the world becomes more dependent on rare earth elements. Given the volatile, Chinese-concentrated supply chain, global attempts have been made to diversify supply of these materials. However, the overall effect of supply diversification on the entire supply chain, including increasing low-value rare earth demand, is not fully understood. This paper is the first attempt to shed some light on China's supply chain from both demand and supply perspectives, taking into account different Chinese policies such as mining quotas, separation quotas, export quotas, and resource taxes. We constructed a simulation model using Powersim Studio that analyzes production (both legal and illegal), production costs, Chinese and rest-of-world demand, and market dynamics. We also simulated new demand of an automotive aluminum-cerium alloy in the US market starting from 2018. Results showed that market share of the illegal sector has grown since 2007-2015, ranging between 22% and 25% of China's rare earth supply, translating into 59-65% illegal heavy rare earths and 14-16% illegal light rare earths. There will be a shortage in certain light and heavy rare earths given three production quota scenarios and constant demand growth rate from 2015 to 2030.
