BACKGROUND: The Modified Early Obstetric Warning System (MEOWS) is a score-based or color-coded system that detects changes in physiological parameters and enables earlier diagnosis and care of worsening obstetric patients. The aim of this study is to evaluate the tool's performance and contribute to its use in Türkiye by translating MEOWS into Turkish. METHODS: This prospective and descriptive study, approved by the local ethics committee, included 350 obstetric in-patients who gave birth at Samsun Training and Research Hospital, Gynecology and Children's Hospital between April and August 2022. The study involved patients with a gestational week greater than 28 weeks and up to six weeks postpartum. RESULTS: The average age of the patients was 28.9±5.9 (18-40) years, with trigger values occurring in 34.6% (n=121) and morbidity occurring in 30.9% (n=108) of the cases. The most common trigger among the individual physiological indicators was high systolic blood pressure (28.3%). When the performance of MEOWS was evaluated, a statistically significant correlation was found between trigger and morbidity (Kappa=0.605; p<0.001). The sensitivity of MEOWS in estimating morbidity was 77.78% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 68.76-85.21%), specificity was 84.71% (95% CI: 79.55-89.00%), Positive Predictive Value (PPV) was 69.42% (95% CI: 62.40-75.64%), Negative Predictive Value (NPV) was 89.52% (95% CI: 85.67-92.43%), and accuracy was 82.57% (95% CI: 78.18-86.40%). CONCLUSION: MEOWS was found to be an effective screening tool for predicting morbidity in this study and performs well in Turkish with sufficient sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy. Background/aim: The most commonly prescribed anti-seizures medications (ASMs) for the treatment of epilepsy are currently topiramate, zonisamide, lacosamide, carbamazepine and levetiracetam. The objective of this study was to examine the correlation between preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative metabolic acidosis and the use of ASMs prior to craniotomy operations. Materials and methods: This retrospective cross-sectional study evaluated patients who underwent intracranial surgery with craniotomy under general anaesthesia between May 2020 and April 2023 and used ASMs. The patients were classified into four groups based on the pharmacological mechanisms of action of the ASMs administered before intracranial surgery (Group-I, zonisamide or topiramate; Group-II, lacosamide; Group-III, carbamazepine; Group-IV, levetiracetam). Metabolic acidosis severity was defined based on base excess (BE) levels: mild (-3 to -5), moderate (-5 to -10), and severe (below − 10). The study investigated the correlation between ASMs and the severity of metabolic acidosis in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative blood gas measurements. Results: Out of 35 patients, 24 patients underwent intracranial surgery and 11 patients underwent epilepsy surgery. There were statistically significant differences in the severity of metabolic acidosis between preoperative (p < 0.001), intraoperative (p < 0.001) and postoperative (p = 0.01) groups. The preoperative mean BE of group-I was − 4.7, which was statistically lower than that of group-III (p = 0.01) and group-IV (p < 0.001). Intraoperatively and postoperatively, group-I had a mean BE of -7.5 and − 3.2, respectively, which was statistically lower than that of groups II (p = 0.007; p = 0.04), III (p = 0.002; p = 0.03), and IV (p < 0.001; p = 0.009). There was no statistically significant difference in BE between groups II, III and IV at all three time points. Group I had the lowest BE at all three time points. Intraoperative bicarbonate was administered to all patients in group I, whereas no intraoperative bicarbonate was required in the other groups. In group I, 50% of patients required postoperative intensive care. Conclusion: The use of ASMs in patients undergoing surgery is important in terms of mortality and morbidity. Topirimat and zonisamide are ASMs that can cause preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative metabolic acidosis. Patients receiving topirimat or zonisamide are particularly susceptible to metabolic acidosis. Special care should be taken in the management of anaesthesia in patients receiving these drugs, and monitoring of the perioperative metabolic status is essential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: It was conducted to investigate digital gaming addiction among nursing students and the associated factors of such addiction. Methods: The descriptive and relationship-seeking study's universe included 1665 nursing students in three universities' nursing faculties and departments. The sample size was determined to be 774 based on a power analysis with a type I error rate of 0.05, a power of the test of 0.80 (α = 0.05, 1-β = 0.80), and an effect size of d = 0.10. Student Information Form, The Digital Game Addiction Scale (DGAS-7), and the Digital Game Playing Motivation Scale (DGPMS) were used to collect student information. Data analysis was performed using the Mann–Whitney U test, Kruskal–Wallis H test, Spearman correlation, and Binary Logistic Regression Model. Results: It was found that 83.7% of the students were female, and the mean age and BMI were 20.03 ± 1.72 years and 21.98 ± 2.90 kg/m2, respectively. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the students' Digital Game Addiction Scale and Digital Game Playing Motivation Scale Achievement and Energizing (r = 0.717), Curiosity and Social Acceptance (r = 0.612), and Uncertainty in Game Desire (r = -0.110) sub-dimensions mean scores (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The relationship between nursing students' digital game addiction, game playing motivation, and several individual characteristics affecting digital games was found. The study's results call for further research to focus on developing and testing interventions that could effectively reduce gaming addiction while enhancing positive aspects of digital engagement among nursing students. Objectives: To evaluate the incidence and severity of depression in patients with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). Materials and Methods: The Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) was administered to 74 patients with RP and 60 healthy controls. Biomicroscopic anterior segment and fundus examination, visual field, optical coherence tomography, and full-field electroretinography tests were performed in all cases. Variables were evaluated with bivariate, multiple linear, and ordinal logistic regression analyses. Results: The RP group included 40 (54%) male and 34 (46%) female patients, while the control group included 23 (38%) male and 37 (62%) female subjects. The patient group had a mean age of 39.20±12.4 years, median best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 0.10 decimal (1.0 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution [logMAR]; range, 1.3-0.7 logMAR), and median visual field mean deviation (MD) score of -28.00 decibels (dB) (range, -1.00 to -34.00 dB). The median BDI score was statistically significantly higher in the patient group (19 points) than in the control group (12 points) (p<0.001). Moderate to severe depression (BDI ≥20) was detected in 61% of patients, while this rate was 25% in healthy controls. BCVA and visual field MD values were identified as predictors of depression score and severity level. The patients' age and gender did not affect total depression score or severity. Conclusion: The prevalence and severity of depression were found to be higher in RP patients than in healthy controls. There was a significant relationship between the patient's functional vision tests and the frequency and severity of depression. Depression reduces the reliability of visual function tests and impairs patients' quality of life. Therefore, assessing mental health as well as functional tests is important in patients with RP. Aim: This study aimed to determine the effects of profession‐related films on the professional pride of nursing students. Designs: The study was conducted with a randomised controlled experimental design. Methods: The sample of the study consisted of 102 students enrolled in the first year of the School of Nursing, Zonguldak Bulent Ecevit University in Türkiye in the 2022–2023 academic year. These students were randomly assigned to the experimental (n = 57) and control (n = 45) groups. The experimental group watched two documentaries and a film on YouTube with a one‐week break. Self‐administered online questionnaires were distributed via WhatsApp groups for pretests and posttests. Data were collected with a "Sociodemographic Data Form" and the "Nursing Professional Pride Scale (NPPS)" included in the questionnaire forms prepared on the Google Forms platform. Data were analysed using Spearman's rho, the Mann–Whitney U Test, and the Wilcoxon Signed‐Rank Test. Results: The mean age of the participants was 18.80 ± 0.99 years, 80% of the participants were female, the place where 79.4% had lived for the longest duration in their lives was the city, 85.3% had information about the profession of nursing before they started university (36.8% from the internet, 34.6% from people around them). The experimental group had significantly higher NPPS scores than the control group after the intervention (p = 0.017). There was also a significant increase in the dimensions of professional feeling (p = 0.012) and desire to continue the profession in the experimental group (p = 0.002). Objective: Türkiye is the leading country that has been applying the MPOWER criteria of the World Health Organization for years. However, the prevalence of smoking among nurses appears to be high, according to the literature. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence, addiction levels, and dynamics of tobacco smoking among nurses in Türkiye. Method: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, a questionnaire (prepared in cooperation with the "World Health Organization") and the Fagerström Test for Nicotine Dependence were administered to 529 nurses working at a tertiary-care university hospital in 2020. Logistic regression was performed to determine factors predicting smoking. Results: The prevalence of smoking among nurses was 32.7% (n = 173). The mean Fagerström test score indicated a "low dependence" level (score: 3 ± 2.6). Both results were higher for males. A relationship was found between trying smoking cigarette and hookah. Of the "current smokers" group, 102 (60.4%) stated that they wanted to quit smoking. Only 21 (27.6%) of the nurses who have tried to quit smoking thus far have received professional help. Conclusion: The prevalence of smoking among nurses working at a tertiary-care university hospital was relatively low compared to that among nurses in Türkiye. While females are normally expected to smoke less, the high prevalence of smoking among nurses (most of them female) raises the question of the professional basis of this situation. However, the low rate of receiving professional help reveals the lack of promotion and accessibility of smoking cessation outpatient clinics in the faculty environment. The present study aimed to explore the perceptions of spirituality and spiritual care among nurses who work in three different countries with different cultures as well as the factors influencing their perception. This is a cross-sectional multicultural study conducted with a total of 1090 nurses from Türkiye, Albania, and Italy. Data were collected through the "Individual Information Form" and the "Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale". Nurses' mean score on the Spirituality and Spiritual Care Rating Scale was above average. It was also found that country, marital status, religious belief, Islamic religion, training for spiritual care, and using spiritual practices to cope with difficulties or illnesses influenced nurses' perception of spirituality and spiritual care. It was concluded that nurses from the three countries associated spirituality and spiritual care with religion and that some personal characteristics influenced their perceptions of spiritual care. OBJECTIVE: Spices, because of their bioactive content, can cause irritation and allergic symptoms in the respiratory system and skin. Spice shop workers are constantly exposed to spices and dried herbs as part of their jobs. This study aimed to investigate the work-related symptoms of spice shop workers. Another aim was to assess the risk status of having an atopic nature for work-related symptoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. Our research team visited the spice shops and a questionnaire was administered to 112 workers to assess work-related symptoms. In order to determine atopy, 79 of them had skin prick tests with common aeroallergens. RESULTS: Workers had eye complaints (19.6%), runny noses (22.3%), skin symptoms (9.8%), shortness of breath (9.8%), and coughs (19.6%) at work. The prevalence of atopy was 18%. Atopy was associated with work-related eye complaints (odds ratio (OR): 4.12, 95% CI: 1.17-14.46), work-related runny nose, and work-related cough (OR: 4.85, 95% CI: 1.44-16.32, and OR: 4.41, 95% CI: 1.30-14.97). CONCLUSIONS: The workers in spice shops are adversely affected by spices and dried herbs in their working environment. Being sensitive to common aeroallergens poses a risk for occupational symptoms. Objective: It was previously shown that the levels of several biomarkers increase due to acromegaly disease-related inflammation, and some markers are parallel to the disease's activity. The current study compared the possible relationship of growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) with acromegaly disease activity in healthy subjects. Methods: This case-control study was conducted in a single center. It included 40 acromegaly patients (25 active/15 controlled) (47.7 ± 9.4 years, 20 female/20 male) and 24 healthy individuals (49.9 ± 10.1 years, 13 female/11 male) with age-sex-body mass index similar to the patient group. Demographic data, metabolic and hormonal parameters, and GDF-15 levels of the study population were studied. Results: The median GDF-15 levels were significantly higher in patients with acromegaly compared to healthy subjects (HS) (280.4 (Q1-Q3: 197.0-553.2) vs. 213.3 (Q1-Q3: 179.9-297.2) ng/L, P = .01). Serum GDF-15 levels of active and controlled acromegaly patients were comparable (P = .39). Interestingly, compared to HS, GDF-15 levels were significantly higher in controlled disease (P = .013), whereas GDF-15 levels tended to be higher in active disease but did not reach statistical significance (P = .06). Growth differentiation factor-15 levels were positively correlated with fasting plasma glucose (r = 0.304, P = .01) and HbA1c (r = 0.292, P = .02). When evaluated across the entire cohort, GDF-15 levels were found to be higher in diabetic patients compared to non-diabetic individuals (P = .04). Conclusion: Plasma GDF-15 levels were increased in the patients with acromegaly compared to healthy subjects. Background: With the rapid improvement in healthcare technologies, the security and privacy of the most sensitive data are at risk. Patient privacy has many components, even when data are in electronic format. Although patient privacy has extensively been discussed in the literature, there is no study that has presented all components of patient privacy. Methods: This study presents a complete assessment framework, develops an inventory as an assessment tool, and examines the reliability and validity of the inventory. The study was carried out in three phases: conceptual framework development, inventory development, and an evaluation case study. Fuzzy conjoint analysis was used in the evaluation to deal with subjectivity and ambiguity. As a result of the evaluation, the case study institution was given a patient privacy maturity level between 1 and 5, where 1 is the worst and 5 is the best. Results: The case study evaluated the largest hospital in Turkey, which employs 800 nurses. Half of the nurses, 400, participated in the study. According to the literature, healthcare institutions do not invest enough in protecting patients' privacy, and the results of the study support this finding. The institution's maturity level was 2, which is poor. Conclusions: This study measured privacy maturity with many assessment components. The result of the assessment explains to patients and the public whether their data are secure or not. With the implementation of this maturity level, patients have an idea about which institution to choose, and the public can infer the reliability of institutions in terms of patient privacy. Background: Specific learning disorder (SLD) is a neurodevelopmental condition characterised by significant academic difficulties despite normal intelligence and adequate education. The difficulties with reading, writing, and arithmetic may manifest independently or concurrently at different ages. Early symptoms may appear in preschool, including delays in social skills, motor skills, and language development. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of preschool children at risk for SLD and related psychiatric disorders. Method: Data were collected from 515 preschool children in Edirne City, Turkey, using a screening scale for early symptoms of SLD. Socio-demographic information was obtained, and children at risk were invited for a psychiatric evaluation. Results: The mean age of the participants was 72.5 ± 5.6 months. It was determined that 5.7% of the preschool children who participated in the questionnaire were at risk of SLD according to the screening scale scores. Factors such as a father's low education, the mother smoking during pregnancy, a longer stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, longer screen time, and consanguinity between parents were associated with an increased risk of SLD. Conclusion: This study emphasises the importance of early identification and intervention for SLD and the need to consider associated psychiatric comorbidities. Identifying the risk factors in preschool children may facilitate timely intervention and prevent academic and social difficulties in later years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: To examine the prevalence of smoking among medical faculty students in Turkey, and to explore the associations between smoking, depression, and other factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among medical students in Konya, Turkey, from November 2018 to February 2019. The first section included eight questions pertaining to sociodemographic details. The second comprised nine questions addressing smoking and other harmful habits. The third section involved the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence while the fourth was the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). Results: The study was completed with a total of 1117 participants (90.2% of all students). In regard to smoking, 813 (72.78%) were non-smokers, 98 (8.77%) were ex-smokers, and 222 (19.87%) were active smokers. Notably, 16.29% of students (n = 182) had a high BDI score (≥17). Male sex, good economic status, depression diagnosis at any time in life, and alcohol use were independently associated with active smoking. Being a senior student and regular exercise were independently associated with a low (<17) BDI score, whereas depression diagnosis at any time in life and drug use were independently associated with high (≥17) BDI. Conclusions: Almost 20% of medical school students were active smokers, with about a 2.5-fold higher prevalence among males compared to females. There is a significant association between smoking frequency and symptoms of depression. Policies targeting modifiable risk factors can reduce smoking and depression among future physicians, which can have a strong impact on population-wide smoking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AIM: It was aimed to explore the serial mediation role of self-efficacy and financial anxiety levels in the impact of health and tourism students' life satisfaction on brain drain perceptions. METHODS: In this descriptive study, the data from 403 participants were collected using four scales (Brain Drain Attitude, Life Satisfaction, Self-Efficacy, Financial Anxiety) between May and July 2022 in Antalya, Türkiye and serial mediation model and regression analysis were conducted. RESULTS: From the data, 83.3% tourism, 74.8% nursing, 56.5% dentistry, and 55.7% medical school students indicated they were contemplating migrating following graduation. Life satisfaction had a positive effect on self-efficacy and a negative effect on financial anxiety, and self-efficacy on financial anxiety had a positive effect. Life satisfaction had a direct negative effect on brain drain, while self-efficacy and financial anxiety had positive effects on brain drain. Students' perceptions of life satisfaction were important antecedent of brain drain intention, and self-efficacy perception and financial anxiety have mediating effects in this effect. The factors most influencing their intent to migrate were brain drain attitude and faculties. Financial anxiety, self-efficacy, and intention to go abroad were variables affecting the perceptions of brain drain. CONCLUSION: The migration intentions and brain drain attitudes expressed in this study predict an immediate and severe threat to the sustainability of the country's healthcare and tourism service. AIM: This study aims to investigate the effects of aromatherapy massage on the pain severity and quality of life in patients diagnosed with migraine, in addition to medical treatment during a migraine attack. METHODS: The study was performed as a randomized controlled trial. This study was carried out in the emergency department of a State Hospital. It was performed in the Emergency Department of Bitlis State Hospital. Data was collected between April 15, and October 15, 2017. The sample of the study was consisted of a total of 70 migraine patients including 35 experimental and 35 control group, subjects who visited the emergency department with migraine pain, along with the medical treatment, patients of experimental group were massaged for 15 minutes with an aromatic oil mixture applied on the temple and root of the neck for three weeks. RESULTS: It was found that the VAS scores of the experimental group before the application (9.26 ± 0.95) were significantly higher than the control group (8.54 ± 1.69) (p = .03). Migraine quality of life scale total and subscale scores of experimental group after the application were significantly higher than the control group (p < .05). AIM: The aim of the study was determined to examine the effect of breastfeeding education, counseling, and support based on Human Caring Theory on mothers' perceptions of breastfeeding self-efficacy and type of breastfeeding. METHODS: The randomized controlled prospective study was conducted with 100 Turkish women (intervention: 50; control: 50) between 2019 and 2021 at a university hospital in Izmir. The intervention program included Human Caring Theory-based face-to-face sessions, for 12 hours, asynchronous distance education modules, and telephone support process. Individual asynchronous distance education and telephone support based on Human Caring Theory were provided from the prenatal process to the sixth month postpartum. The control group received two hours of standard breastfeeding training in a childbirth education class. Clinical trial number was received (NCT05246748). RESULTS: Human Caring Theory-based breastfeeding education and support program improved breastfeeding self-efficacy scores of the intervention group (68.88 ± 3.15) compared to the control group (58.08± 9,92). In addition, the breastfeeding duration and exclusively breastfeeding in the intervention group were longer and statistically higher than the control group. CONCLUSION: Since breastfeeding is an emotional and social interactive process, using the theor etica l/phi losop hical framework based on human care will provide a scientific and holistic perspective. The one of the leading causes of adolescent morbidity and mortality worldwide is motor vehicle accidents (MVA). The use of seat belts significantly lowers MVA fatalities and injuries. The aim of this study is to investigate adolescent seat belt usage patterns and relation with risky behaviors. The study conducted at two medical institutions with non-immigrant and literate adolescents aged 12–18. Demographics, seat belt use, and risk-taking behavior were collected through questionnaires. 726 teenagers (422 girls and 304 boys) with an average age of 176.7 ± 23.37 months participated in the study. Parents' educational levels and front-seat belt use have been found to be correlated. Comparatively to non-users, seat belt users demonstrated lower risk scores (total, traffic, substance, and social). The use of seat belts was significantly predicted by traffic risk, according to logistic regression. The frequency of seatbelt use was higher among participants from cities with higher socioeconomic status. As a result, it was found that adolescents who exhibited more risky behaviors had a lower frequency of seat belt use and seat belt use was associated with socioeconomic level and parental education level. Aim. This study was aimed to investigate whether the practice of laughter yoga in nursing students who just started university can help them cope with stress. Design. An experimental randomized controlled study was conducted. Methods. The research was conducted with first‐year students (n = 38) who were willing to participate in the study. The intervention group took part in six 45–50 minute laughter yoga sessions twice a week for three weeks. Results. The comparison of the mean and total scores obtained from the Coping Behavior Inventory and Physio‐Psycho‐Social Response Scale by the participants in the control and intervention groups before and after the implementation of the laughter yoga practices demonstrated that there was a statistically significant difference between the two tests in the intervention group and the difference was especially evident between the pre‐ and posttest scores obtained from the Coping Behavior Inventory. Conclusions. In this study, laughter yoga practice helped the participating nursing students who just started university to cope with stress. It can be recommended that laughter yoga should be integrated into the curriculum in schools where nursing education is provided as a way of coping with stress, that its use should be expanded, and that randomized controlled experimental studies in which its physiological and psychological effects in different groups are investigated with objective and subjective parameters should be conducted. Background: A chronic autoimmune disease with an increasing incidence rate, type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is typified by the degeneration of the pancreatic beta cells. Diabetes management is significantly impacted by nutrition. Although it has been demonstrated that following the Mediterranean diet (MD) improves metabolic control with type 2 diabetes in children and adults, its effects on children with T1DM have not received much attention. Objective: Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess whether adherence to Mediterranean diet is associated with better metabolic control and body composition in youths with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus. The study recruited T1DM patients aged 6-18 years at İstanbul University Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty Hospital's Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Outpatient Clinic for follow-up. Methods: In addition to demographic variables, some anthropometric measurements, body composition and biochemical parameters such as: Trygliceride(TG), Total cholesterol (TC), High density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), Low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), (Aspartate aminotransferase) AST, Alanine transaminase (ALT) and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) was analyzed. The time in range (TIR) is a value obtained from continuous glucose monitoring. KIDMED was used to assess the participants' adherence with the MD. Results: Good adherence to the MD resulted in much larger height SDS than poor adherence. Poor adherence to MD resulted in higher body fat than moderate and good adherence. There is positivite correlation between TIR and KIDMED score. Adherence to MD is negatively associated with HbA1c. The regression anaylsis showed that a one-point rise in the KIDMED score would result in a 0.314-unit reduction in the HbA1c value (p < 0.01). Conclusions: In conclusion, this study found that adhering to MD led to improved anthropometric measurements, biochemistry, and diabetes outcomes. Background: Regular exercise is essential in the treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), as the main goals of the treatment are to reduce pain, restore function, avoid disability and structural deterioration, and improve quality of life (QoL). The purpose of this study is to ascertain whether patients adhere to exercise recommendations and to evaluate the effects of consistent exercise on patients' pain, function, disease activity, mood, and quality of life. Many studies emphasize the need for exercise in treatment of AS, but none reveal whether patients follow prescribed practices and the results of doing so. Results: Exercising group had significantly decreased pain, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and Bath ankylosing spondylitis functional index and Bath ankylosing spondylitis disease activity index (BASDAI) scores (p < 0.05). There was no significant difference between the two groups in morning stiffness, mood, spinal mobility, and QoL parameters (p > 0.05). Regular exercise was positively correlated with physiotherapy history. Regression analysis revealed that with an increase of 1 unit in visual analog scale and BASDAI, regular exercise decreased by 0.087 and 0.116 units, respectively. Conclusion: Our study revealed how much the patients considers and follows the recommended exercises and concluded that regular exercise habits should be developed since they offer promising effects in treatment of AS, hence, patients should be educated in this area, and particular exercise routines should be developed to encourage them to exercise. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to determine the tobacco use status of first and fifth grade students studying at Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine in the 2022-2023 academic year and to evaluate the factors affecting tobacco use. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The data of the cross-sectional study were obtained by sending a form prepared in electronic environment to the students after a brief information was given in the unit/classroom where they did their internship, and the students responded on their mobile phones. In research, 539 of 790 students answered the form. RESULTS: The prevalance of tobacco use was 34.1% (first: 29.8%, fifth: 40.8%) (female: 26.7%, male: 40.4%). According to multivariate analysis, tobacco use in first grades increases 1.8 times (95% CI: 1.1-3.3) if the general health perception is moderate/poor, 2.9 times (95% CI: 1.2-6.8) to be exposed to insistence of friends for tobacco use, 2.4 times (95% CI: 1.3-4.3) for at least one of the family members to use tobacco, 29.7 times (95% CI: 3.9-224.1) for at least one of the close friends to use tobacco, and 3.9 times (95% CI: 2.2-7.1) not to think that physicians should set an example for the society by not using tobacco; in fifth grade, tobacco use by at least one of the close friends increases 9.6 times (95% CI: 2.1-43.6), and not thinking that physicians should set an example for the society by not using tobacco increases 4.9 times (95% CI: 2.7-9.2). Purpose: In this study, it was aimed to examine the relationship between postpartum fatigue and sleep quality of women. Methods: This was a descriptive and crosssectional study This study was conducted in a public hospital in the south of Turkey between April and June 2021. 272 women were included in the study. The personal information form, the Visual Similarity Scale for Fatigue and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used to collect data. Data were analysed using Mann Whitney-U test, Kruskal-Wallis H t test and Interquartile Range tests analyses. The relationships between the scales were evaluated with the Spearman correlation analysis. Findings: A total of 272 responders answered the survey. The mean age of the women who participated in the study was 31.30±5.40. The total PSQI mean score of women who participated in the study was 15.39±5.82, the mean score of the fatigue sub-dimension was 98.40±30.76, and the mean score of the energy sub-dimension was 18.88±13.72. Conclusions: It was determined that the fatigue level of women was high while their sleep quality was poor in the postpartum period. Our study showed that women's sleep quality deteriorated as their fatigue scores increased. Implications for nursing practice: Nurses should carefully monitor the sleep of mothers when they are together with their infants. Mothers should be provided with help when they are tired so that they can sleep more comfortably. OBJECTIVES: To elucidate prognostic factors, determine the best course of treatment methods, and assess oncological results in individuals diagnosed with uterine sarcoma. STUDY DESIGN: Between January 2001 and August 2023, 30 patients with uterine sarcomas (US) were included and analyzed in this cross-sectional study. Sixteen patients (53.3%) had uterine leiomyosarcoma, 6 patients (20%) had high-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma, 8 patients (26.7%) had low-grade endometrial stromal sarcoma. RESULTS: The median follow-up of all participants was 50 months. Recurrence was detected in 43.3% of the patients. 5-year survival ratio was 73.3%, 5-year disease-free survival ratio was 66.7%, the overall survival ratio was 70% and the overall disease-free survival rate was 56.6%. No difference was observed between groups in terms of survival comparisons. No statistically significant effect of adjuvant systemic chemotherapy, adjuvant radiotherapy, and combined treatments on median overall survival and median disease-free survival was detected (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: Uterine sarcomas are uncommon malignancies characterized by a poor prognosis, even in early stages, and they are associated with a high recurrence ratio. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate maternal Resolvin D1 levels in women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and investigate the association between perinatal outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: This case-control study included 88 singleton pregnancies, conducted from August 2023 to January 2024, at a tertiary care center. Participants were divided into two groups: 44 pregnant women diagnosed with GDM comprised the study group, and 44 healthy pregnant women served as the control group. Additionally, the GDM group was categorized based on management approach into 21 women managed with diet alone and 23 women requiring insulin therapy. Maternal plasma Resolvin D1 levels and maternal-neonatal outcomes were then compared between groups. The analysis involved determining the optimal Resolvin D1 cut-off levels for predicting composite adverse neonatal outcomes in GDM using receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis. RESULTS: The plasma Resolvin D1 level in pregnant women with GDM was significantly higher compared to the control group (337±74.1 vs. 297±56.7, p<0.001). Furthermore, maternal plasma Resolvin D1 levels were associated with composite adverse neonatal outcomes [presence of at least one of the following conditions: preterm birth (<37 weeks), low birth weight (LBW) (<2500 grams), neonatal hypoglycemia, hyperbilirubinemia, APGAR score at 5th minute <7, respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), and admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)], with a cut-off of >338.75, showing a sensitivity of 56.3%, a specificity of 79.2%, and an AUC of 0.675 (95% CI: 0.567-0.771, p=0.024). CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that pregnancies affected by GDM exhibit elevated levels of Resolvin D1, which is associated with a higher incidence of composite adverse neonatal outcomes. (1) Background: This study aimed to determine whether standard-dose vitamin D supplementation could provide adequate levels in exclusively breastfed infants born with different cord 25(OH)D levels and to evaluate related neonatal morbidities. (2) Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was designed in term infants. Three groups were formed based on cord 25(OH)D levels; Group1 Deficiency:25(OH)D < 12 ng/mL, Group2 Insufficiency:25(OH)D = 12–19 ng/mL, and Group3 Optimum:25(OH)D = 20–100 ng/mL. Cord and 1st month 25(OH)D levels, after receiving standard-dose vitamin D prophylaxis, neonatal outcomes and anthropometric measurements were compared. (3) Results: The study involved 86 infants. Group1 Deficiency had also significantly lower 25(OH)D levels at 1st month compared to the others (p < 0.001). There was a significant positive correlation between cord and 1st month 25(OH)D levels (r = 0.78, p < 0.001). Despite the fact that the mother's age and clothing style were similar, Group1 Deficiency mothers had higher parity numbers and used less vitamin D during pregnancy (p = 0.03, p = 0.04). Neonatal outcomes analysis revealed that newborns in Group1 Deficiency experienced more respiratory distress, transient tachypnea, and early-onset sepsis, as well as more and longer hospital stays in the first-month of life (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusions: Infants with low cord 25(OH)D levels had also lower 25(OH)D values in the 1st month of life and experienced higher rates of neonatal morbidities. Given its numerous biological activities and impact on neonatal morbidities, determining an individualized dose of vitamin D supplementation may be more accurate than using the standard approach. Objective: The novel coronavirus caused a disease that mainly affected the respiratory system. The effect of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 on the hypot halam ic–pi tuita ry–ad renal axis is unknown. This study assesses the prognostic accuracy of serum cortisol levels and prediction tools in predicting mortality rates in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods: We prospectively analyzed 106 inpatients (53 COVID-19 positive, 53 non-COVID-19; mean 59.9 ± 17.3 years; 38 males and 68 females) with serum cortisol and adrenocorticotropic hormone levels compared with prognostic scores. Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) scores determined the disease’s severity. The predictive value of serum cortisol, APACHE, and SOFA on mortality was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and the area under the curve (AUC). Results: No significant age or sex differences were found between groups. Serum cortisol levels were similar. The APACHE-II scores in the COVID-19 group were higher than in the other group, while SOFA scores showed no significant difference. The AUC for the APACHE-II score in predicting mortality was 0.765 (95% CI 0.672-0.842), with an optimal cutoff (>9) demonstrating 62.5% sensitivity and 86.7% specificity for overall participants. No correlation was found between serum cortisol levels and prediction tools such as APACHE-II and SOFA. Conclusion: The measurement of serum cortisol did not provide additional prognostic information beyond that established by the APACH-II score. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the early, late, and total constipation frequency, related factors, and their effects on the hospitalization day, gastric residual volume, vomiting, distension, and diarrhea, the feeding type, white blood cells, and C-reactive protein levels, and body temperature. Method: Data from this observational cross-sectional study were collected in an anesthesia and reanimation intensive care unit of a public hospital in Bolu, Turkey. The sample included 116 patients who met the criteria of the study. The sample size was determined using power analysis according to the results of a pilot study. The patient information form, daily observation form, and Bristol stool consistency scale were used for collecting the data. Results: The constipation frequency was 63.8% in the unit. The early constipation frequency was 18.9%, and the late constipation frequency was 6.8%. The hospitalization day in these groups was longer than those without constipation. Also, the patients receiving mechanical ventilator support, enteral tube feeding, and diuretic medication had a higher risk for constipation. The enema/laxative was applied to half of the patients who developed constipation in the unit, after which more than half developed diarrhea. Distension and enteral feeding were more frequent in late-type constipation patients. The levels of white blood cells, C-reactive protein levels, and body temperature between all groups were not statistically different (p>0.05). Conclusion: The frequency of constipation was higher in the intensive care unit, even when the defecation period was considered four days. Receiving mechanical ventilator support, enteral tube feeding, and diuretics increased the risk of constipation. Yoğun bakımda konstipasyon gelişen hastaların yarısına lavman/laksatif uygulandı, sonrasında yarısından fazlasında diyare gelişti. Geç tip konstipasyon hastalarında distansiyon ve enteral beslenme daha sık görüldü. Background and Objectives: The objective of this study was to determine the correlation between the prognosis of patients admitted to a tertiary intensive care unit (ICU) and the admitted patient population, intensive care conditions, and the workload of intensive care staff. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study that analyzed data from all tertiary ICUs (a minimum of 40 and a maximum of 59 units per month) of eight training and research hospitals between January 2022 and May 2023. We compared monthly data across hospitals and analyzed factors associated with patient prognosis, including mortality and pressure injuries (PIs). Results: This study analyzed data from 54,312 patients, of whom 51% were male and 58.8% were aged 65 or older. The median age was 69 years. The average number of tertiary ICU beds per unit was 15 ± 6 beds, and the average occupancy rate was 83.57 ± 19.28%. On average, 7 ± 9 pressure injuries (PI) and 10 ± 7 patient deaths per unit per month were reported. The mortality rate (18.66%) determined per unit was similar to the expected rate (15–25%) according to the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) II score. There was a statistically significant difference among hospitals on a monthly basis across various aspects, including bed occupancy rate, length of stay (LOS), number of patients per ICU bed, number of patients per nurse in a shift, rate of patients developing PI, hospitalization rate from the emergency department, hospitalization rate from wards, hospitalization rate from the external center, referral rate, and mortality rate (p < 0.05). Conclusions: Although generally reliable in predicting prognosis in tertiary ICUs, the APACHE II scoring system may have limitations when analyzed on a unit-specific basis. ICU-related conditions have an impact on patient prognosis. ICU occupancy rate, work intensity, patient population, and number of working nurses are important factors associated with ICU mortality. In particular, data on the patient population admitted to the unit (emergency patients and patients with a history of malignancy) were most strongly associated with unit mortality. Objective: The increase in the prevalence of obesity, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and related comorbidities in children creates a social and financial burden. In our study, we aimed to evaluate liver findings together with anthropometric and laboratory data with twodimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE), one of the SWE types, which is a noninvasive method for assessing tissue stiffness in children with obesity, and to obtain quantitative data that can be used in early diagnosis and follow-up. Materials and Methods: In our single-center, observational cross-sectional study, liver gray scale findings, 2D-SWE findings, anthropometric measurements, and laboratory values of 48 children with obesity and 50 healthy children aged between 5 and 18 years, both between groups and in prepubertal and pubertal subgroups, are compared. Results: A significant difference was found in the liver stiffness indicator kilopascal (kPA) values and between aspartate aminotransferase values in the prepubertal period and alanine aminotransferase values in the pubertal period (P < .001). No significant difference was found between insulin, HOMA-IR, waist circumference, waist/height ratio, and kPA. Conclusion: Two-dimensional shear wave elastography can be easily applied in the pediatric population as a practical, noninvasive, reproducible, and highly compatible technique. In this regard, 2D-SWE may be useful in the early diagnosis and follow-up of hepatosteatosis and fibrosis in children with obesity and NAFLD-risky cases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Theory of mind (ToM), the ability to recognize the mental states and emotions of others, is central to effective social relationships. Measuring higher-order ToM skills in gifted children may be a useful way to identify the tendency to experience difficulties in social behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between intelligence and sex in children using ToM and social behavior measures. Methods: Children aged 10–12 years constituted both the gifted (n = 45) and non-gifted (n = 45) groups. The participants were assessed for prosocial behaviors and peer problems using the subscales of the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire and in terms of ToM using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test-Child Version (RMET-C) and the Faux Pas Recognition Test-Child Version (FPRT-C). Results: ToM test results were higher in gifted children and girls. Peer problems were lower in gifted children. Prosocial behavior was higher in girls. No relationship was determined between ToM tests and peer problems or prosocial behavior in gifted children, but such a relationship was observed in the non-gifted group. Conclusions: This study shows that gifted children with high cognitive skills also possess superior social cognition skills. Advanced ToM skills in gifted children may be important to supporting their social and cognitive development. OBJECTIVE: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can cause hypoxic respiratory failure; long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT) duration is unknown. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The aim was to investigate which patients would need LTOT after COVID-19 pneumonia. This single-center, prospective study was conducted at the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Chest Diseases, between May 2021 and December 2021. The 70 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia and discharged with LTOT due to hypoxemic respiratory failure were included. Patients were divided into 2 groups as group I (LTOT requirement <3 months) and group II (LTOT requirement continued =3 months). RESULTS: The mean age was 64.4 ± 13.5 years, and 44 (62.9%) of them were male. The most frequently encountered comorbidities were cardiovascular disease (57.1%) and lung disease (22.9%). While PaO2 levels increased in both groups during the follow-up period, this increment was significantly higher in group I (PaO2: 66.6 ± 9.9 mm Hg, P < .001). The factors affecting the LTOT requirement were evaluated using binary logistic regression. On multivariate analyses of lymphocytes, ferritin, C-reactive protein, PaO2, SaO2, subpleural reticulation, and number of lobes affected (=3 lobes), the SaO2 level and presence of subpleural reticulation were significantly different between the 2 groups [odds ratio (OR) (95% CI): 0.853 (0.749-0.971), P = .016] and [OR (95% CI): 0.171 (0.042-0.733), P = .017], respectively. CONCLUSION: A significant proportion of patients who develop respiratory failure due to COVID-19 recover within the first 3 months. Objective: The aim was to evaluate autonomic dysfunction by investigating exercise time, the chronotropic index (CI), and heart rate recovery (HRR) during an exercise stress test (EST) in patients with primary adrenal insufficiency, also called Addison's disease (AD). Methods: Twenty-two patients with adrenal insufficiency and 25 healthy controls were included in this study. The data from the patients who underwent an EST were collected, analyzed, and reported. Results: The mean ages and genders of the patients with AD and the controls were insignificant. The baseline systolic and diastolic blood pressures (SBP and DBP) were significantly lower in the patients with AD compared to the controls before the EST. According to exercise-induced data, the SBP, DBP, and CI were insignificant for females and males between the groups. The exercise time, HRR1, and HRR2 were significantly decreased in the patients with AD compared to the controls. When the patients and controls were evaluated by gender, other than the HRR1 of the females, there were no differences between both genders. Additionally, a multiple logistic regression analysis showed that exercise time was independent and negatively related to the CI, HRR1, and HRR2 in the patients with AD. Conclusion: Exercise time and cardiac autonomic dysfunction in patients with AD may be related to mortality and morbidity. However, further studies and detailed analyses are needed on this subject. Objective: Epilepsy is a condition characterized by sudden, recurrent epileptic seizures that occur as a result of abnormal and excessive electrical discharge in cortical neurons and are not triggered by an identifiable event. To date, no study has examined prospective memory and medication adherence in patients with focal and generalized epilepsy. This study aimed to examine medication adherence and prospective memory functions in individuals diagnosed with focal and generalized epilepsy Methods: In this study, 51 patients diagnosed with focal and 51 with generalized epilepsy at Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University Faculty of Medicine Epilepsy and Sleep Center were included. In addition to the sociodemographic and clinical data forms, participants were administered the Modified Morisky Scale to evaluate medication adherence and the Prospective and Retrospective Memory Questionnaire to evaluate prospective memory function. Results: No difference was found between patients diagnosed with focal epilepsy and those with generalized epilepsy in prospective memory functions and medication adherence. Near-significant correlations were found between medication adherence and memory function. Conclusion: More comprehensive studies evaluating cognitive functions and other parameters related to medication adherence simultaneously are required to clarify the relationship between memory and medication adherence in epilepsy. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of the “unclassified” blood pressure phenotypes on left ventricular hypertrophy in children. Materials and Methods: All children evaluated with ambulatory blood pressure monitoring in the pediatric nephrology department between October 2018 and January 2021 were included in the study. Prehypertension, normotensive, white coat hypertension, masked hypertension, ambulatory hypertension groups and 2 other groups including increased blood pressure load, normal ambulatory blood pressure measurements, but normal (unclassified group 1) or high (unclassified group 2) office blood pressure measurements were defined according to the American Heart Association 2014 statement. Left ventricular mass index, left ventricular mass index/95 percentile values, and left ventricular hypertrophy ratios were compared between the groups separately to establish the influence of the unclassified cases. Results: A total of 497 children were included. There were 52 cases in normotensive, 47 cases in unclassified group 1, 50 cases in masked hypertension, 79 cases in white coat hypertension, 104 cases in unclassified group 2, and 165 cases in the ambulatory hypertension group. Left ventricular mass index/95 percentile and left ventricular hypertrophy in masked hypertension were significantly higher than normotensive but similar between normotensive and unclassified group 1 groups. Left ventricular hypertrophy was significantly higher in the ambulatory hypertension group compared to white coat hypertension, and similar between white coat hypertension and unclassified group 2 groups. Conclusion: Independent of age, we have found that interpretation of blood pressure load not only has a limited predictable effect on left ventricular hypertrophy but also causes a large group of patients to be unclassified. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD), mindful eating, environmental beliefs, and obesity in children. Materials and Methods: The study included 318 children (50.6% male, 49.4% female, 10.0 ± 0.73 years old). Data were obtained using survey and a face-to-face interview method. The questionnaire includes general information, anthropometric measurements, the New Ecological Paradigm Scale for Children (NEP), the Mediterranean Diet Quality Index for children and adolescents (KIDMED), and the Mindful Eating Questionnaire for Children. Results: According to the KIDMED classification, 52.5% of the children were in the group that needs improvement, 35.2% were in the low diet quality group, and 12.3% were in the optimal MD group. The Mindless score was higher in overweight/obese children compared to the normal body mass index (BMI) group (P < .05). Awareness, NEP, and KIDMED scores were the lowest in overweight/obese children (P < .05). In regression analysis, the father’s age, KIDMED, and Awareness scores related to NEP scores positively (R2 : 0.545, P < .001). Also, children’s body mass index-related KIDMED scores negatively, and awareness and NEP scores related KIDMED scores positively (R2 : 0.276, P < .001). Conclusion: Our results show that higher adherence to the MD is associated with higher environmental beliefs. Children with higher mindful eating have higher environmental beliefs and adherence to the MD, and these scores are lower in obese children. Therefore, raising generations that adopt sustainable diet models and have high environmental awareness is necessary. Objectives: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had detrimental impacts on both physical and mental health worldwide. In addition to the behavioral effects, it has caused a range of psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and anger. Fear and stress have been particularly prevalent in individuals. This study aims to assess the psychometric properties of the Scale for the Evaluation of Mental and Psychosomatic Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic (COVID-19 PRPEDS) on adolescents and explore the pandemic's psychosomatic effects. Materials and Methods: A total of 503 adolescents between the ages of 14 and 18 years who continue their high school education constituted the study population. The COVID-19 PRPEDS comprising 18 items and 2 subscales (Mental Effects, Psychosomatic Effects), was used in adolescents. The forms were delivered to the students via the Internet, and in addition to the scale, the age and sex of the adolescents were recorded. Results: A majority of the participants (96.6%, n = 486) had knowledge about COVID-19, 93.8% (n = 472) could differentiate COVID-19 from other diseases, 96.6% (n = 486) were able to explain the transmission ways of COVID-19 and 96% (n = 483) took the necessary precautions to protect themselves from COVID-19. The COVID-19 PRPEDS scores of males were higher than females. The study validation index was above 0.9, which is considered to be acceptable for adolescents. Conclusions: Like in the other pandemics, adolescents experienced serious mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. Aim: The aim of the study is to examine the relationship between premenstrual symptoms and healthy lifestyle behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic process. Method: The research was descriptive and cross-sectional type. The data collected from 407 women between the ages of 18-49. The data was collected with an information form, The Premenstrual Syndrome Scale and The Healthy Lifestyle Behaviour Scale II. Results: The prevalence of premenstrual syndrome was 72.7%. The mean score of the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale was 132.45±36.51, and the mean score of the Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale II was 120.27±18.41. A significant negative correlation was found between the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale and the Healthy Lifestyle Behavior Scale II. It was found that having irregular menstruation period, experiencing menstrual changes and premenstrual symptom changes significantly increased the mean scores of the Premenstrual Syndrome Scale. Vegetable and fruit consumption, carbohydrate consumption, caffeine consumption and salt consumption were found to affect both premenstrual complaints and healthy life. Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that the prevalence of premenstrual syndrome was high, and the women had a moderately healthy lifestyle. Purpose: Today many surgical operations are performed with laparoscopic methods. This study was performed to investigate the effect of the brochure-based training on pain, anxiety, and life findings in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Materials and methods: This is a quasi-experimental controlled study. The data were collected from all patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy between 1 May 2018 and 30 December 2018, A State Hospital. When the confidence interval was calculated as 95% in the known sample universe, the number of patients to be included in the study was 62. The patients were divided into two groups as control (n = 31) and experiment (n = 31) groups. Patients were selected by random sampling method. The groups were homogenous. The data were collected by face-to-face interview method by the researcher using the patient identification form, the Hospital Anxiety, and Depression Scale, the Visual Analog Scale, and the evaluation of life findings. Patients who had laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the experimental group were given brochure training. The control group received routine nursing practice, and both groups were given a brochure booklet after making them fill in the forms 24 hours before and after the operation. Data were analyzed with SPSS 22 software package by employing Chi-square and t-test. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the anxiety levels of the patients in the hospital anxiety/depression scale (p<0.05), but there was no statistically significant difference in depression (p>0.05). Pain values were statistically significant (p<0.05) and there were mild positive results in vital signs. Conclusion: We recommend that the training programs should be planned for patients and health care workers to reduce the anxiety levels before and after surgery, together with the training on nan-pharmacological methods for reducing the pain levels in the patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
