As a new green material, steel-paper straw board (PSB) composite structures are widely used in practical engineering. This study proposed a new cold-formed thin-walled C-shaped steel-paper straw board (CFCSPSB) composite floor. To study its mechanical properties, flexural experiments were conducted on three composite floors. The experimental results showed that the combined effect of PSB and cold-formed thin-walled C-shaped steel (CFCS) beam was good, and the local buckling caused by the restraint effect of PSB on the CFCS beam was an important factor for the failure of the composite floor. On this basis, the composite floor was investigated by finite element analysis (FEA) software ANSYS, and the FEA results were consistent with the experimental results. Then, the effect of different factors on the flexural capacity of the composite floor was analysed by ANSYS. The obtained results showed that reducing the screw spacing and floor span, or increasing the CFCS beam cross-sectional size, web height of CFCS beam, and CFCS thickness could improve the flexural capacity of composite floors, and the calculation formula of flexural capacity for the composite floor was proposed.

This work deals with fracture mechanisms in quasi-brittle materials, focusing on the characterization of the Fracture Process Zone (FPZ) of specimens under tensile load. Particularly, paper was used as model material. Experiments were conducted on notched and unnotched specimens. Based on an image analysis of these observations, a stochastic finite element model was developed, using both a nonlocal stress-based approach and a discretized random field modeling of the Young's modulus. The proposed methodology allowed characterizing the damage zone and the size of the FPZ, analyzing the influence of the mesostructure, composed of flocs (fiber aggregates where the basis weight is larger than the average one) and antiflocs (complement of flocs). The area of the active FPZ and the normalized stress drop were linked using a surface energy dissipated in the active FPZ. The stress drop, until limiting value, increased with the width of the active FPZ. Finally, a relationship between the surface energy and the nonlocal internal length was established. The transport properties of gas diffusion layer (GDL) in proton exchange membrane fuel cell are important parameters in fuel cell modelling, and one method to measure them is to simulate the transport of each species at spatial resolutions of a few microns in a microstructure of the GDL. One issue in this method is the size of the microstructure as using an unnecessarily big sample could substantially increase the computational cost. Both carbon-paper and carbon-cloth GDLs are investigated and their microstructures are obtained using numerical generation and X-ray micro-tomography respectively at a resolution of 1.733 µm. For each reconstructed GDL, we use the orthorhombic lattice Boltzmann model to simulate fluid flow through some subsamples taken from it in both the in-plane and the through-plane directions; the results show that the permeability of all subsamples is anisotropic in that their permeability in the in-plane direction is higher than in the through-plane direction. For each GDL, we compare its permeability calculated using samples of different sizes and find its representative elementary volume (REV) – a volume above which the calculated permeability represents the average ability of the GDL to conduct fluids. Abstract: In this study, the determinability of time related colour changes in prints made using ink that dries on matte coated paper with the offset printing technique and infrared method, has been investigated with artifical neural networks after analysis of the experimental and numerical methods. In the experimental part a ECI 2002 CMYK test scale is printed on a 135g/m2 matte coated. The prints obtained were measured with a spectrophotometer at certain intervals and by converting the reflection data obtained into the CIELAB colour description spectrum, time related changes in printed colours have been determined. In the empirical study however, colour changes in prints made on matte coated paper using inks that dry with the infrared method are modelled numerically. The average deviation has been found to be 0.4%. As a result, artificial neural networks can be used with the aim to digitally calculate time related colour changes in the offset printing system. This article describes a new method for evaluation of radial crush strength of paper cores. Based on the theory of multilayered composites, a mathematical model has been developed to calculate the value of destructive force during radial crushing of spirally shaped paper cores whose layers are made of different materials. The profiles of the edge of rectangular sheets of paper folded so as to join opposite edges were measured and compared with the profiles calculated with the theory of elasticity. A paper-based channel is a useful platform for the facile development of analytical devices implementing various chemical or biological reactions. To improve the analytical performance for various applications, it was necessary to analyze the detailed mixing characteristics within a paper-based channel. In this paper, we proposed a mathematical model to predict a concentration field created as a result of the imbibition of multiple fluids within a porous material. Interestingly, we found that the model exhibited a constant interdiffusion width within a paper-based channel even though the flow front velocity decreased over time. We were able to verify that our model accurately predicted the concentration field by comparing the experimental and numerical results for mixing in a 2 inlet-channel. Finally, we designed and fabricated paper-based channels to generate two (linear and non-linear) concentration gradients based on predictions made by the model. Both the experimental and numerical results were in good agreement, demonstrating that our model was accurate and useful for developing a paper-based analytical device utilizing the mixing characteristics of a sample and reagent flow system. Abstract: The transport of electrons through the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells has a significant impact on the optimal design and operation of PEM fuel cells and is directly affected by the anisotropic nature of the carbon paper material. In this study, a three-dimensional reconstruction of the GDL is used to numerically estimate the directional dependent effective electrical conductivity of the layer for various porosity values. The distribution of the fibers in the through-plane direction results in high electrical resistivity; hence, decreasing the overall effective electrical conductivity in this direction. This finding is in agreement with measured experimental data. Further, using the numerical results of this study, two mathematical expressions were proposed for the calculation of the effective electrical conductivity of the carbon paper GDL. Finally, the tortuosity factor was evaluated as 1.7 and 3.4 in the in- and through-plane directions, respectively. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The mechanical response of three different structural core sandwich panels in out-of-plane compression and shear has been analyzed. Specific core shapes examined are arc-tangent, wavy trapezoidal and hemispherical. Unit cells consisting of representative elements of the core attached to face sheets were selected for analysis. Both face sheets and core were assumed made from paper. Finite element analysis employing large deformation and rotations and orthotropic elastic–plastic behavior was used. The results show that the arc-tangent and trapezoidal cores are prone to collapse by extensive bending and buckling, whereas the hemispherical core behaved more stably in compression and shear. Core sheets with a hemispherical shape were prepared from copy paper sheets in a specially designed forming machine. Sandwich test specimens were prepared from this core and tested in out-of-plane compression, and the load-displacement response was compared to predictions from finite element simulations. This paper brieffy overviews some recent and very fresh results on a rather new class of dynamic optimization problems governed by the so-called sweeping (Moreau) processes with controlled moving sets. Uncontrolled sweeping processes have been known in dynamical systems and applications starting from 1970s while control problems for them have drawn attention of mathematicians, applied scientists, and practitioners quite recently. Thin-walled tubular deployable composite boom (DCB) has gained significant attention due to its lightweight, simple structure and high packaging efficiency. The experimental and numerical simulation methods were employed in this paper to investigate the folding behavior of the DCB. Using T700/epoxy unidirectional reinforced prepreg as raw material, DCB specimens were prepared by the vacuum bag method. To complete the folding experiments of DCB specimens, a folding mechanism was designed and manufactured. Folding experiments of DCB specimens were conducted and folding moment versus rotational displacement curves were measured. In addition, a Finite Element Model (FEM) was established to predict the folding behavior of the DCB. Different failure criteria were considered in the numerical analysis, including the Tsai‐Hill criterion and maximum stress criterion. Prediction results using the FEM were compared with experimental results, and both sets of results were in good agreement. It is shown that the DCB can achieve the folding function without failure. The research results in this paper are of great significance to the practical engineering application of the DCB. A generalization of the problem of writing on dirty paper is considered in which one transmitter sends a common message to multiple receivers. Each receiver experiences on its link an additive interference (in addition to the additive noise), which is known noncausally to the transmitter but not to any of the receivers. Applications range from wireless multiple-antenna multicasting to robust dirty paper coding. We develop results for memoryless channels in Gaussian and binary special cases. In most cases, we observe that the availability of side information at the transmitter increases capacity relative to systems without such side information, and that the lack of side information at the receivers decreases capacity relative to systems with such side information. For the noiseless binary case, we establish the capacity when there are two receivers. When there are many receivers, we show that the transmitter side information provides a vanishingly small benefit. When the interference is large and independent across the users, we show that time sharing is optimal. For the Gaussian case, we present a coding scheme and establish its optimality in the high signal-to-interference-plus-noise limit when there are two receivers. When the interference power is large and independent across all the receivers, we show that time-sharing is again optimal. Connections to the problem of robust dirty paper coding are also discussed. This paper combines the digital twin system modeling method to conduct an in-depth study and analysis of graph-theoretic combinatorial optimization. This paper provides new ideas and approaches for optimal numerical analysis work by studying the digital twin modeling method that integrates digital modeling and graph theory combination, provides theoretical support for safe, stable, and economic operation of the system, proposes a solution for digital twin model based on big data platform, focuses on the nearest neighbor propagation (AP) and graph theory combination, solves the digital twin real-time monitoring data asynchronous, incomplete problem, and applies the algorithm to the digital twin model based on the big data platform for data preprocessing to achieve better results. This paper also presents a web-based digital twin system based on intelligent practical needs, analysis, and comparison of existing models, combined with digital twin technology, detailing the differences and connections between the various levels of numerical analysis and the implementation of this data in various fields, such as user management, equipment health management, product quality management, and workshop 3D navigation and detailed modeling of the digital twin system based on this numerical analysis to realize remote online monitoring, analysis, and management. In this paper, for the numerical analysis process, firstly, the key technologies of modeling and simulation operation control of production line based on digital twin are studied, and the rapid response manufacturing system based on a digital twin is designed and validated. Secondly, a scheduling technology framework for capacity simulation evaluation and optimization is established, and batching optimization, outsourcing decision, and rolling scheduling techniques are thus proposed to form a batching optimization algorithm based on priority rules, which realizes batching processing, outsourcing decision, and rolling scheduling of production orders to optimize equipment utilization and capacity. Finally, digital twin-based modeling is designed, and the validation results demonstrate the system's superior performance in achieving information interaction between physical and virtual production lines, optimization of numerical analysis, and display of results. Abstract: A finite element procedure, developed in order to account for the effect of high anisotropy at folding of coated papers, is presented. The anisotropic behaviour (with very low stiffness in the thickness direction) is modelled using stiff structural elements (trusses and beams). The numerical results indicate that high elastic anisotropy leads to lower strain levels at folding than reported in previous analyses where this effect was not accounted for. High plastic anisotropy, on the other hand, will contradict this result. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Folding of coated paper is examined numerically using the finite element method. Particular emphasis is put on the behaviour of field variables relevant for cracking of the coating layers. In the numerical analysis, the basepaper is modelled as an anisotropic elastic–plastic material (both elastic and plastic anisotropy is accounted for) while the constitutive behaviour of the coating layers are approximated by classical (Mises) elastoplasticity. The numerical results suggest, among other things, that particular forms of plastic anisotropy can substantially reduce the maximum strain levels in the coating. It is also shown that delamination buckling, in the present circumstances, will have a very small influence on the strain levels in the coating layer subjected to high tensile loading. This paper introduces a novel type of connection that integrates unbonded prestressed strands (UPS) and mortise-tenon in an assembly frame structure (UPS-MTF). First, the damage process and failure modes of the joints under reciprocating horizontal loads were systematically analyzed using refined numerical models. The recommended values of the design parameters of the joints were derived from the parametric analysis results. Refined numerical modeling results reveal the diagonal compression strut mechanism within the core region of the joint. The diagonal compression struts model assists in establishing the theoretical calculation formula for the skeleton curve of shear stress–strain in the core region. Second, a genetic algorithm (GA) parameter was identified for the restoring force model of the core region to determine the parameters of the hysteresis rules. Finally, a macro-simplified analytical model of the joint was created based on the restoring force model of the core region, and parameter analysis was conducted to verify the applicability of this macro-simplified analytical model. The research results prove that the damaged form of the joint proposed in this paper originates from the shear and relative slip damage between the components in the core region. The axial compression ratio significantly affects the hysteretic performance of the joints, and the upper and lower limit values were identified for the axial compression ratio of the joints. The area and initial effective stress of the UPS exert a minimal effect on the hysteretic performance of the joint. Based on the method proposed in this paper for determining the restoring force model in the core region of the joints, the hysteresis curves obtained from the macro-simplified analytical model closely match the refined numerical analysis model results. Abstract: Strains, computed by the finite element method, are evaluated and compared to an experimentally determined strain field. The analyzed low-density paper has been designed to ensure bond–breakage as the dominating damage mechanism and the paper material is approximately in-plane isotropic. An optical non-contact displacement measuring system has been used in fracture tests to determine the strain field in the crack-tip region of a pre-fabricated crack. Additionally, acoustic emission monitored tensile tests have been conducted to determine onset and evolution of damage processes and thereby enabling calibration of required constitutive parameters. The results suggest that the investigated paper material can tolerate significantly higher strains than what is predicted by a classic elastic–plastic J 2-flow theory. Immediately before onset of the final fracture (i.e., localization), the experimental measured normal strain in the near-tip region is around 60% higher than the computed strain when using exclusively an elastic–plastic theory for the corresponding load while the strain computed utilizing a non-local damage theory is of the same order of magnitude as the experimentally measured strain. Hence, it seems essential to include a non-local continuum theory to describe strains in the near-tip region quantitatively correct for paper materials. It is demonstrated that path independence of the well-known J-integral does not prevail for this class of material models. Only for the special situation of a homogenous damage field in the crack-tip region may the stress and strain fields be described by the well-known HRR-solutions. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Predictive computer simulation of the temperature field control system of an induction heated object encounters difficulties associated with the nonlinearity of system on the one hand, and the time of calculation on the other hand, during numerical analysis of the magneto-thermal field of the object, especially in 3D. The paper presents a methodology for the fast simulation of temperature field for a completed induction heating system of calender rolls. The method of 3D calculations of rotating calender rolls with a moving web of wet paper can be connected easily with a simulation of the temperature field controller, for simulation of complex control systems. In order to solve the cold-starting problem and improve the intake and exhaust pipe temperatures of diesel engines under cold-starting and low- and medium-speed conditions, this paper proposes a twice-open control method for a hydraulic variable valve system. First, a hydraulic variable valve system that can realize a fully variable valve lift and phase angle is applied to replace the original intake system in order to meet the air intake requirements of different conditions. Then, a twice-open control method in which the intake valve opens two times at the exhaust stroke and intake stroke is proposed to improve the intake pipe temperature and solve the cold-starting problem. This paper contains a numerical work analysis. A GT-POWER model is constructed to validate the intake valve twice-open control method. The cylinder pressure, cylinder temperature, intake pipe pressure, and intake pipe temperature are obtained and compared between the original intake valve system and the hydraulic variable valve system with the proposed intake valve twice-open control method. The results show that the twice-open control method can increase the intake pipe temperature to 260 K or even higher, which can improve the cold-starting performance and the exhaust temperature at low and medium speeds. In this paper, we present an improved imperialist competitive algorithm for solving an inverse form of the Huxley equation, which is a nonlinear partial differential equation. To show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, we conduct a comparative analysis with the original imperialist competitive algorithm and a genetic algorithm. The improvement suggested in this study makes the original imperialist competitive algorithm a more powerful method for function approximation. The numerical results show that the improved imperialist competitive algorithm is an efficient algorithm for determining the unknown boundary conditions of the Huxley equation and solving the inverse form of nonlinear partial differential equations. Abstract: The high fidelity generalized method of cells (HFGMC) has been originally developed by as a micromechanical method for periodic multi-phase composite media. A computational implementation of the HFGMC equations has been proposed by to enhance numerical efficiency, still with direct reference to the HFGMC formulation. Later, the same computational implementation is recast as a new method called “finite volume direct averaging micromechanics” (FVDAM), starting by . The current discussion paper has two aims. The first is to show that the FVDAM is not a new method and that it has the same assumptions and identical governing equations as those originally derived by the HFGMC. The only difference is in the solution procedure where intermediate dependent variables, in the form of average displacements at the interfaces, are used instead of directly solving for the unknown micro-variables; the coefficients of the displacement polynomials. Thus, renaming the HFGMC micromodel to FVDAM has not been justified. In fact, () have shown that the same reduction of variables can be achieved by a simple static condensation carried out at the global system of equations instead of introducing intermediate variables. The second aim of this paper is to address misrepresentations in a recent discussion paper by the FVDAM authors claiming, in part, that the HFGMC method using parametric geometry of the subcells should follow their formulation (termed parametric FVDAM). We show that the latter is limited to an incomplete quadratic expansion of the displacement and an approximation in the form of a priori constant Jacobian of the parametric mapping. However, the HFGMC with arbitrary cell geometry, (), has been formulated in a direct and general manner, i.e. retaining the full quadratic expansion of the displacement together with the complete Jacobian. Thus, the parametric FVDAM is a special case of the parametric HFGMC, i.e. when the Jacobian is sampled and evaluated only at one point, namely the origin of the parametric coordinate system. The intended new contribution of to refined micromechanics and progressive damage has been completely ignored by the FVDAM-discussion paper. Therefore, in order to maintain scientific clarity, it is strongly advocated to preserve the original name of the HFGMC method, regardless of the different computational implementations used for solving the governing equations for both orthogonal and parametric geometries of the subcells. Abstract: We present a model for the laminated composite plate problem based on the Reissner–Mindlin model and first-order lamination theory. The weak problem based on this model is solved with the finite element method using stabilized MITC (mixed interpolation of tensorial components) finite elements. Detailed a priori estimates are given for the mixed finite element formulation of the problem. Explicit bounds for the continuity and coercivity constants of the coupling terms are presented, thus refining earlier results. Furthermore, we present an application of the theory to the paper cockling problem and investigate the effect of boundary conditions on the small-scale deformation of the solution numerically. Honeycomb paper core stretching is an important process in paper core manufacture because the performance and the quality of paperboard are greatly enhanced when the honeycomb hole is stretched to a regular hexagon structure. In view of the above, first the finite element method is used to compare the mechanical performances of honeycomb paperboards of different aperture ratios, and the aperture ratio, which has an important influence on the performance of the honeycomb paper, is explained. Next, a paper core stretching simulation is carried out by means of the dynamic software; thus the variation trend of the stretching force, the stretching speed, and the lateral shrinkage needed in paper core manufacture of different specifications can be obtained. Abstract: A model, using the finite element method (FEM), was developed for the analysis of the time and humidity-dependent stresses of paper webs at offset printing press conditions. The offset press was simplified to a flat thin moving web and its unit process steps were described by combinations of prescribed displacements, tractions and moisture ratios. Based on previous modelling and experimental findings, a convective hygro-viscoelastic model of the paper web was derived. The constitutive law and some of the boundary conditions were implemented as user-defined subroutines into commercial FEM software in a displacement-based framework. Some simulation examples were used to study the applicability of the proposed formulation in the analysis of web-fed offset printing at stationary conditions. The numerical stationary solutions converged rapidly and the model was robust for the investigated conditions. Incorporating effects from moisture, the numerical results show web tension profiles along the analysed model press comparable to those found by others from full-scale newsprint printing press trials. Effects of altered levels of the peripheral velocities of rollers, friction, web velocity, moisture and web properties on in-plane stresses and strains are presented. In order to exemplify the practical use of the model for runnability investigations, different analysed quantities obtained from the numerical solutions were related to web tension, web widening, misregister in multi-colour printing, sheet size analysis, conditions for web stability and traction conditions at drag rollers. Abstract: The fundamentals of a new radiation model are described in this paper. The spatial and angular dependence of the radiation intensity are split in such a way that the radiation intensity is approximated by a linear combination of basis functions dependent only on the angular direction. The coefficients of the approximation are functions of the spatial coordinates. The spatial discretization is performed using the finite volume method and the angular discretization is based on the finite element method. This means that the basis functions are defined according to the criteria used in the finite element method. The step scheme was employed in the spatial discretization and bilinear basis functions were chosen for the angular discretization. The method may be applied to both grey and non-grey media, non-scattering and scattering media, simple and complex geometries. However, it is still in an early stage of development, and therefore it is applied in this paper to simple one-dimensional problems of radiative transfer in enclosures with grey, emitting-absorbing and scattering media. The results obtained show that the method gives good results for several benchmark problems with available analytical solutions, and converges to the exact solution as the grid is refined and the number of terms in the approximation increases. Abstract: In a recent paper, K. Soundararajan showed, roughly speaking, that the integers smaller than x whose prime factors are less than y are asymptotically equidistributed in arithmetic progressions to modulus q, provided that and that y is neither too large nor too small compared with x. We show that these latter restrictions on y are unnecessary, thereby proving a conjecture of Soundararajan. Abstract: In a recent paper (Computer Aided Geometric Design 23 (3), 243–260), Yang presented a novel kind of nonlinear and geometry driven subdivision scheme for curve interpolation. The author declared that this scheme was shape preserving when all free parameters were explicitly selected by some specific rules. In this note, we demonstrate that the author (a) ignored the consistency of the definition to straight edges, and also (b) did not give a perfect scheme and proof for the shape preserving subdivision. Abstract: In this paper we study the heat transfer and fluid flow in a step-down 3-phase power transformer. In order to simplify the study we choose an element composed of two windings wound around a core. The Joule effect and the Foucault currents produce an undesirable heat in the different components of the transformer. From an economical and security point of view, there is a need to cool the transformer to preserve it from destruction. Our main objective is the cooling optimization of the power transformer. In order to attain this goal, a numerical study has been conducted for six different geometric configurations with six different flow rates of the cooling oil at the entrance. The physical properties of the fluid are supposed to be function of the temperature. The control volume method has been used to resolve the continuity, the momentum and the energy equations in the steady state. The obtained results show that the structure of the flow is somehow complex and according to the case some rolls appear at the top and the bottom of the windings, these rolls contribute to a good mixing of the fluid leading to a nearly homogeneous temperature. Folding of coated papers is examined numerically using the finite element method. The analysis is focused on the influence from dynamic effects on the folding process. In particular, the behaviour of field variables relevant for cracking of the coating layers are studied in some detail. The results presented indicate that dynamic effects are of little importance as regards maximum strain levels in the coating but will influence the stress and strain distributions. In this paper are presented desing, testing and numerical analysis for two manufactured control valve trims. Valve trim is consisted of cage or dick stack, plug, stem and seat. Size from app. 15.88 mm (0.625 in) up to 101.6 mm (4 in) is suitable for 3-D metal and plastic print, what is presented in this paper. Selective laser melting 3-D metal printing is applied on the disc presented in this paper. Even better material properties from rest of the valve parts could be obtained. This is of great importance for valve retrofitting. In this paper is presented, also, new developed channel geometry, what is followed by various fluid-flow phenomena. Measurement results for second prototype manufactured by 3-D printing using plastics are presented in details. Here is shown, in short, procedure for determination of KV values of the test valves according to the EN 60534-2-3, Industrial-process control valves - Part 2-3: Flow capacity - Test procedures. • The compaction of paperboard is analyzed through finite element simulations of the industrial process. • The mechanisms governing the process are clarified within the rolling contact mechanics framework. • The parameters controlling the final product outcome are identified for industrial optimization. With the goal of partial or complete replacement of plastic components with paper-based products, 3D paper structures have seen a growing interest in industrial applications: from packaging to more complex daily life objects. However, the extensibility of paper has become a key issue within this context and is the main factor determining the formability of these products and determining the depth of the achievable shapes. The most effective way to increase paper's stretch potential is by subjecting the moist paper web to a compaction process, which can be achieved through an extensible unit that is located in the drying section of a paper machine, where the network experiences in-plane compression in the machine direction (MD), under out-of-plane lateral constraints. The objective of this work is to clarify the mechanisms governing the compression process and to evaluate the influence of various parameters on the final material properties to optimize the industrial production of extensible paper. The system operation has been simulated realistically and shows that paper experiences a compressive state passing through the nip, with plastic strains in MD direction being of the same order of the applied speed difference, which was expected experimentally in optimal conditions of compaction. Starting from an initial reference case, a sensitivity study has been performed to identify and address the following factors that may affect the compression state: (a) friction coefficients; (b) indentation level; (c) speed difference; and (d) rubber properties. The analysis of the numerical results gives an insight into the mechanisms governing the compaction operations and allows a better comprehension of the features controlling the process outcome. The present paper is devoted to the proposal of appropriate numerical modelling able to provide a suitable description of the mechanical behavior of a composite geopolymer. Reference is made to a natural sisal-fiber-reinforced geopolymer. The study is based on the results of appropriate experimental investigations for compressive, flexural and splitting loadings, taking into account different weight percentages of fibers to evidence their role in the mechanical behavior. The main objective of the paper is to calibrate the microplane constitutive model, available in ANSYS software version 18.1, where the numerical analyses are performed. Therefore, the present study is structured in two different steps. Firstly, the mechanical behavior of geopolymers reinforced with sisal fibers is experimentally investigated, and subsequently, the gathered test data are interpreted and utilized to calibrate the relevant constitutive model to be used in the numerical stage. The obtained results are compared with experimental data, yielding good correlations. The paper's results supply the parameters required to obtain an affordable numerical model of the reinforced geopolymer for different percentages of fibers to be adopted for material design with assigned mechanical properties. The performance of the Plate Indirect Evaporative Cooler (PIEC) can be effectively improved by incorporating baffles in the dry channel. However, in the dimensional influence of the baffles on PIEC performance there remains a research gap. In order to investigate the impact of baffle dimensions on the wet bulb efficiency, namely the average heat transfer coefficient and the cooling capacity of the PIEC, this paper proposed and verified a three-dimensional numerical model and method based on the species transport model and the Euler wall film model. At the same time, in order to obtain the equilibrium point between the enhanced heat transfer performance and the additional resistance induced by baffles, a comprehensive performance evaluation index is introduced. The results indicate that, under the same conditions, (1) the baffle effect on PIEC performance is significant at a lower inlet air velocity, and the wet bulb efficiency of the PIEC with baffles can be improved by 22.8%; (2) the baffle effect on PIEC performance is negative if its relative length exceeds 60% or the primary air inlet velocity surpasses 4 m/s under the conditions specified in this paper; and (3) the baffle effect on PIEC performance is significant when its channel height is lower and its channel width is larger, and the wet bulb efficiency of the PIEC with baffles can be improved by 29.3%. The current flat-plate solar collectors perform best when their absorbers rotate around their axis. However, with their concentrators, reflectors, and tracking mechanisms, they take up a lot of space and are thus commercially speaking, not the best solutions. This paper proposes a novel solar collector design which employs the (relative) rotation of absorbers, but strives to combine the benefits of fixed and (absolute) tracking solar systems, i.e. volume occupancy from the former and thermal performance from the latter. The findings of our numerical analysis show that, the solar irradiance efficiency of this novel design is 20% higher than that of a fixed flat-plate collector during clear-sky days, and it is equally lower than that of an absolute tracking collector. This paper also introduces a new criterion for describing single-axis tracking solar collectors which should be included in the classifications of solar collectors. Finally, the article, which represents a continuation of our research in the field of solar energy utilization, can contribute to the future development of solar technologies and solve some of the current challenges. Deployable and foldable tape-spring booms are widely used in aerospace technologies, especially for large-scale membrane structures. Semi-circular (STEM) and lenticular (CTM) boom cross-sections were invented for specific applications since these configurations have either a concise structure or a high twisting stiffness. Moreover, a triangular cross-section (TRAC) boom was proposed years ago, as its more scattered configuration could afford a higher bending stiffness after deployment. Meanwhile, blossoming is one of the most serious failure modes during boom deployment, and is commonly caused by a relatively high load acting on the boom tip. For the sake of avoiding blossoming failure, the highest load a boom can withstand should be found theoretically for a better design. This paper aims at acquiring the highest tip load (i.e., driving force) a TRAC boom can withstand through establishing an analytical model. Furthermore, a numerical analysis is carried out to provide some verification, whose modeling and analysis method has been verified by a comparison with the experimental data from previous investigations. The paper aimed to investigate the influence, on the assessment of the structural safety level of an existing r.c building, of the different choices that the technician in charge of a structural evaluation (the "analyst") can make regarding the structural elements to be tested to obtain a prescribed level of knowledge. To this end, the case study of a reinforced concrete framed structure built in the 1960s in Italy was investigated by means of numerical analyses. The probability distribution of the estimated safety levels was evaluated in the paper by means of a Monte Carlo approach, considering the alternative selections of elements done by a large number of analysts, and the probability of unsuccessful safety estimations is discussed for the knowledge levels considered in the Italian technical codes and the Eurocodes. This paper presents numerical methods for solving the one-dimensional fractional reaction-diffusion equation with the fractional Caputo derivative. The proposed methods are based on transformation of the fractional differential equation to an equivalent form of a integro-differential equation. Most power transformers are oil-immersed transformers for which its insulation system consists of oil and cellulosic solid. The insulation liquid impregnates the solid-covering air spaces, which improves the efficiency of the insulation system. Not only does the oil ensure electrical insulation but it also works as coolants transferring the heat generated during transformer operation to the exterior of the transformer. Throughout normal operation conditions, transformers experience multiple stresses that degrade their insulation. Since the lifetime of oil-immersed transformers is defined mainly by the state of the insulation paper, it is critical to understand the behavior and degradation mechanisms of new insulation systems that try to overcome the drawbacks of mineral oil as well as to improve power transformer performances. The current increased prevalence of the nonlinear loads additionally stresses power transformers, which generates their premature ageing or even failure. Consequently, new materials and assessment methods are required to guarantee the suitable management of power transformer populations. Fuzzy logic is becoming one of the most-influential fields of modern mathematics with applications that impact not only other sciences, but society in general. This newly found interest in fuzzy logic is in part due to the crucial role it plays in the development of artificial intelligence. As a result, new tools and practices for the development of the above-mentioned field are in high demand. This is one of the issues this paper was composed to address. To be more specific, a sizable part of fuzzy logic is the study of fuzzy connectives. However, the current method used to generalize them is restricted to the use of basic automorphisms, which hinders the creation of new fuzzy connectives. For this reason, in this paper, a new method of generalization is conceived of that aims to generalize the fuzzy connectives using polynomial automorphism functions instead. The creation of these automorphisms is achieved through numerical analysis, an endeavor that is supported with programming applications that, using mathematical modeling, validate and visualize the research. Furthermore, the automorphisms satisfy all the necessary criteria that have been established for use in the generalization process and, consequently, are used to successfully generalize fuzzy connectives. The research hypothesis states that the impregnation of the honeycomb paper core of lightweight sandwich panels with modified starch, sodium silicate and epoxy resin (LiquidWood®) resin has a significant effect on its elastic properties. In this study, a recycled paper was used in three thicknesses, seven types of cell shapes, including two after numerical optimization and three types of impregnating agents. The method of digital image analysis determined the elastic constants of manufactured paper cores, which were subjected to axial compression in two directions. Based on the experimental results, elastic constants of the cores were calculated and compared with the results of numerical calculations. It has been shown that each of the impregnating solutions used improved the stiffness of the paper core. The best results were obtained for LiquidWood® epoxy resin and modified starch. An important parameter of cell geometry affecting their rigidity is the angle of the cell wall φ, as well as the arrangement of the common cell wall in relation to the direction of load. This paper proposes a new method to improve re performance of intra-field interpolation which is the mos~ important element of deinterlacing method. Traditional edge- based methods were poor at determining accurate edge iirection which decides interpolation performance. The 7roposed method decides the direction and slope of edge based on locally adaptive-thresholded binary image to mprove efficiency and accuracy, and it also increased the ~orizontal size of search window to 15 for better direction ietermination at gentle slope. Compared to traditional edge- based methods, interpolation based on binary image, which is ,`enerated using the proposed method, leads to great erformance improvement.
