The development of pesticides has significantly advanced global agricultural production, but the ensuing problem of pesticide residues poses a severe threat to human health. So, there is an urgent need to establish a rapid, accurate, sensitive, cost-effective and on-site method for large-scale detection of pesticide residues. Electrochemical paper-based analytical devices (ePADs) represents a highly sensitive and portable microanalysis system, which uses paper as a substrate and relies on a capillary force to drive the fluid for the separation and detection of samples. The diversity of pesticides and agricultural products and the complexity of matrices impose high requirements on the sample preparation procedure. This article summarizes the preparation process of ePADs from the aspects of paper selection, the establishment of hydrophilic and hydrophobic channels, the integration of separation zones, and electrode printing. Subsequently, this paper establishes the relationship between pesticide detection and chip preparation based on the mechanism of electrochemical detection of pesticides. Finally, it discusses the advantages, challenges and future prospects of ePADs with a view to providing theoretical reference for enhanced application of ePADs in the field of pesticide residue detection.

Microbially contaminated food can cause serious health hazards and economic losses, therefore sensitive, rapid, and highly specific visual detection is called for. Traditional detection of microorganisms is complex and time-consuming, which cannot meet current testing demands. The emergence of paper-based biosensors provided an effective method for efficient and visual detection of microorganisms, due to its high speed, all-in-one device, low cost, and convenience. This review focused on 5 biomarkers, namely nucleic acids, proteins, lipopolysaccharides, metabolites, and the whole microorganism of microorganisms. Besides, the recognition methods were summed up in 5 forms, including immunological recognition, aptamer recognition, nucleic acid amplification-mediated recognition, DNAzyme recognition and clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats mediated recognition. In addition, we summarized the applications of paper-based biosensors in the detection of microorganisms thoroughly. Through the exploration of different biomarkers, identification methods, and applications, we hope to provide a reference for the development of paper-based biosensors and their application in safeguarding the food chain.

We prepared tea tree essential oil microcapsules, and the microcapsules and pullulan were coated on kraft paper to prepare an antibacterial paper. The antibacterial activity, structural characterization, and thermal stability of the prepared microcapsules and packaging paper were then tested. We found that the retention rate of microcapsules reached 87.1% after a 70 min of high-temperature treatment. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of microcapsules to S. aureus and E. coli were 112 mg/mL and 224 mg/mL, and the bacteriostatic zones of the packaging paper to E. coli and S. aureus were 17.49 mm and 22.75 mm, respectively. A ratiometric fluorescence sensor platform with easy-to-use and accurate is nanoengineered for NH3 quantitative detection and visual real-time monitoring of chicken freshness using smartphones. The ratiometric fluorescent probe formed by combining the zinc ion complex and carbon dots has a double-emitted fluorescence peak. The fluorescence intensity of the complex changed can be clearly observed with the increase of the concentration of ammonia solution under 365 nm wavelength excitation. In order to detect NH3 concentration in gaseous phase, a portable paper-based sensor was designed. The sensor had a good linear relationship with NH3 concentration ranging from 10.0 to 90.0 μmol/L and the LOD value was 288 nM. This fluorescent paper-based sensor was used to check the freshness of chicken breast refrigerated at 4 °C, revealed observable shifts from blue to green. The fluorescent paper-based sensor can detect NH3 concentration in real time and simplify the monitoring process of meat freshness while ensuring accuracy and stability.

BackgroundIn this study, we aimed to address the low utilization of straw and poor fermentation quality of paper mulberry silage (under natural fermentation conditions). Straw was combined with paper mulberry for ensiling, and the fermentation characteristics, bacterial community, and metabolite composition of the mixed straw and paper mulberry silage were investigated. Four treatment groups were established: corn-straw treatment 2 (3:7 ratio of corn straw to paper mulberry), corn-straw treatment 3 (5:5 ratio of corn straw to paper mulberry), wheat-straw treatment 2 (3:7 ratio of wheat straw to paper mulberry), wheat-straw treatment 3 (5:5 ratio of wheat straw to paper mulberry), and a control group (ensiling of paper mulberry alone).ResultsThe control group demonstrated the highest pH and ammonia (AN) and acetic acid (AA) content compared with all the treatment groups. Corn-straw treatment 2 had the highest lactic acid content (54.70 g/kg dry weight) compared with the control and other treatment groups. A flexible wipe paper for rapid nondestructive detection of ferbam residues on the surface of fruits and vegetables by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) was prepared using filter paper as the substate by a simple soaking method. The synthesis and storage conditions were optimized to ensure that the SERS method has excellent performance. The results showed that concentration factor of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), soaking time in AgNP solution and drying method greatly affected the performance of the SERS wipe paper. The performance under the condition of soaking for 8 h in a 5-fold concentrate of AgNP solution was significantly better than that under other conditions. The SERS wipe paper prepared by vacuum drying had better performance that those prepared by other drying methods. After 9 days of storage at −20 ℃, the optimized substrate retained approximately 50% of the original peak value. Besides, it exhibited good sensitivity, uniformity, and repeatability. The limit of detection (LOD) for ferbam on a glass plate was 4.07 × 10-6 mg/mL, and the LOD for ferbam on the surface of spinach and nectarine were 0.043 and 0.062 mg/kg, respectively. This study provides an excellent basis for the development and utilization of SERS wipe paper.

Based on the selective quenching effect of the flavonoid rutin on the fluorescence of carbon dots prepared by asparagine pyrolysis, a method for rapid detection of rutin content in the flower buds of Sophora japonica by using chitosan-based carbon dot paper chip was developed. A filter paper was immersed in the casting solution of carbon dots and chitosan. After drying, a carbon dot chitosan film was formed on the surface of the filter paper, so that the chitosan-based carbon dot paper chip was obtained. After samples were dripped on the chip, chromogenic reaction occurred uniformly within a limited region, and pictures were taken under an ultraviolet (UV) lamp at 365 nm for analysis of the red (R), green (G), and blue (B) values of the colored spots in order to optimize the preparation conditions and detection conditions. The results showed that the optimal conditions were as follows: chitosan concentration of 20 mg/mL, carbon spot concentration of 1.0 mg/mL, 50% ethanol as sample solvent, and reaction time of 20 min. Under these conditions, the difference (ΔG) in G-value between sample and solvent spots had a linear relationship with rutin concentration (C) in the range of 4 to 120 mg/mL. Using this method, the average contents of rutin in the flower buds of S. japonica from three batches were determined to be 23.85%, 22.83% and 20.30%, the average relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 6.1%, 5.6% and 6.7%, and the recoveries were 91.27% to 107.5%, which were close to the results of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The proposed method is simple and rapid, and can be used for rapid on-site determination of rutin content in the flower buds of S. japonica.

Foodborne spores are ubiquitous with extremely strong resistance, and pose a serious threat to food safety and human health. Therefore, rapid, sensitive, and selective detection of spores are crucial. In this study, a fluorescent probe was developed based on lanthanide ion (Eu3+)-labeled nano-silver-modified graphene oxide (GO-AgNPs-Eu3+) for the detection of 2,6-dipicolinic acid (DPA), a biomarker unique to spores, to allow quantitative spores detection. The GO-AgNPs-Eu3+ nano-fluorescent probe was loaded onto a polyvinylidene fluoride microfiltration membrane, and a smartphone-assisted portable GO-AgNPs-Eu3+ nanoparticles-based paper visual sensor was designed for rapid on-site quantitative and real-time online detection of spores. The results indicated that the developed probe achieved equilibrium binding with DPA within 5 min, and enhanced fluorescence emission through antenna effect. The fluorescence detection presented a good linear relationship in the DPA concentration range of 0–45 μM, with a DPA detection limit of 4.62 nM and spore detection limit of 104 cfu/mL. The developed sensor showed a change in fluorescence from blue to red with increasing DPA concentration, and this color change was quantitatively detected through smartphone RGB variations, with a detection limit of 13.1 μM for DPA and 6.3 cfu/mL for Bacillus subtilis spores. Subsequently, the sensitivity and selectivity of the developed sensor were verified using actual milk and water samples spiked with B. subtilis spores. The results of this study provided objective technological support for rapid detection of spores, which is important for reducing the occurrence of foodborne diseases and improving food safety.

“Lab on paper” is a paper-based microanalytical system with unique advantages such as high sensitivity, low cost, portability, and mass production, which breaks through the limitations of traditional detection technologies and shows great potential in the field of rapid on-site food detection. In this paper, the typical “labs on paper”, including chromatographic paper, chemical test chip, lateral flow assay (LFA), microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), and synthetic biological paper, are systematically reviewed. Special emphasis is put on the application of “lab on paper” in the field of food detection. Finally, the advantages, challenges, and future prospects of paper-based analytic methods are discussed, which may provide theoretical support for better application of “lab on paper” in the field of food detection.

New paper-based microfluidic technology has been widely used in many fields due to their advantages such as easy preparation, low cost, and non-toxic environmental protection, compared with the shortcomings of other food analysis and detection techniques such as complex production method and high cost of preparation. The outline of new paper-based microfluidic technology is briefly summarized and the probes including organic molecules, nanomaterials and polymers their structural activity with regard to sensing performances along with their limit of detection are also discussed. This review is expected to assist readers for better understanding of the sensing mechanisms of various chemo and bio-probes utilized in µPADs, as well as promote their advancement in the field. The detection mechanism and its advantages in the whole detection system at the same time to get the ideal experimental results of new paper-based microfluidic technology in the food analysis of pesticide residues, pathogenic bacteria, additives, heavy metals and other substances are mainly introduced. This study would provide the theoretical basis and references for fast detection field. The future challenges and application prospects of this technology are prospected.

Objective: This study aimed to solve the problem of cigarette flavoring technology that the surface taste of splicing paper weakens over time. Methods: A rapid method for the simultaneous determination of two kinds of sweeteners was established based on ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC). The change of the content of the sweetener on the surface of the tipping paper was analyzed, and the induced migration experiment was used to analyze the migration of sweeteners. The surface porosity, air permeability and surface water absorption of aluminized splice paper were analyzed by scanning electron microscope, air permeability tester and surface water absorption tester. Results: A method for rapid determination of two kinds of sweeteners simultaneously was established by UHPLC. The results of induced migration experiment showed that the sweeteners in the tipping paper migrated from the surface to the inside of the paper gradually. The results of scanning electron microscope, air permeability tester and surface water absorption tester showed that pores distributed on the surface of the aluminized tipping paper, and the high air permeability thereby led to the surface water absorption capacity. Therefore, the sweetener migrated in the aluminized tipping paper. After 42 days of induced migration, the migration rates of acesulfame and saccharin sodium in the paper were 48.47% and 49.65%, respectively. Conclusion: The pores and cracks spreading on the surface of the aluminized tipping paper made it have high permeability and strong water absorption, and the concentration differences between the two sides of the paper resulted in a conducive migration of the sweeteners.

Fruit paper is a paper-shaped snack made from fresh fruit after pulping, boiling and drying. Drying, one of the oldest methods for food preservation, removes water from fruit and extends its shelf-life for year-round consumption. The most commonly used drying methods include hot air drying, vacuum drying, freeze drying, and their combinations. The energy efficiency of drying process and the quality of fruit paper are both important to be considered in fruit pulp drying. This article updates the research status of drying technologies applied in fruit paper production, including hot air drying, freeze drying, vacuum drying, microwave drying, infrared radiation drying, and refraction window drying. In addition, the influence of the pretreatments and drying process on fruit paper's shape, texture, and nutrients are also summarized. This work aims to improve the drying efficiency of fruit paper and retain the active ingredients of fruit to the maximum extent, and to provide reference for further research on drying processing of fruit paper in food industry.

Antimicrobial properties of biochar have been attributed to its ability to inactivate foodborne pathogens in soil, to varying degrees. High concentrations of biochar have reduced E. coli O157:H7 in soil and dairy manure compost, based on alkaline pH. Preliminary studies evaluating 31 different biochars determined that two slow pyrolysis biochars (paper biochar and walnut hull cyclone biochar) were the most effective at inactivating E. coli in soil. A study was conducted to determine the lowest percentages of paper and walnut hull cyclone biochars needed to reduce E. coli O157:H7 in soil. A model soil was adjusted to 17.75% moisture, and the two types of biochar were added at concentrations of 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5, 5.5, and 6.5%. Nontoxigenic E. coli O157:H7 were inoculated into soil at 6.84 log CFU/g and stored for up to 6 weeks at 21°C. Mean E. coli O157:H7 counts were 6.01–6.86 log CFU/g at all weeks between 1 and 6 in soil-only positive control samples. Populations in all soil amended with 1.0 and 1.5% of either type of biochar (as well as 2.0% of the walnut hull biochar) resulted in ≤0.68 log reductions at week 6, when compared with positive controls. With the rising trend of valuing flavor complexity of coffees, means to distinguish the properties of individual coffee sources is vital to the sustainable growth of the coffee industry. Herein, paper spray mass spectrometry (PS–MS), a simple technique with little sample preparation, was used to collect mass data from aqueous extracts of coffees from various sources. Thereafter, principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis were used to successfully classify coffee samples (with 80–100 % accuracy) from various studies including the differentiations of Arabica and Robusta coffees, Arabica coffees from different countries, Robusta coffees from different geographical locations, and Arabica coffees from different locations within the same province in Thailand. With further insight from significant test via Fisher weight determination, this method was proved to be practical for differentiating coffees based on types and geographical origins, thus paving the way for broader applications.

Objective: In order to solve the quality problems of YB517 transparent packaging machine, such as folds and unevenness of transparent paper on the sides of cigarette packages, a new cigarette-packaging side seal and shaping device was developed. Methods: After the improvements, the drive shaft of cigarette receiving plate of output turntable of YB517 was used as a power source, and the heating and shaping of cigarette package side seals were achieved by designing reciprocating mechanisms, heater components, cigarette package positioning components, and optimizing push seats; and using Solidworks software to simulate and analyze the displacement, velocity and acceleration of the shaping device. At the same time, it was connected to the temperature measurement and control system of "Heat sealer for Drawstring" so that the temperature parameters can be displayed and adjusted on the IPC control surface. Finally, the method of sampling in the test was used to compare and analyze the wrinkle of boxed transparent paper before and after the transformation. Results: The side seal shaping device had the advantages of no interference, gentle velocity and acceleration curve, no obvious impact and stable operation. The wrinkle ratio of boxed transparent paper decreased from 11.58% to 2.50%, which decreased 78.40%. Conclusion: It ensures product quality and improves consumers satisfaction.

In order to prolong the shelf life of fresh leaves of Perilla frutescens and ensure the storage quality of leaves during storage and retail, a newly developed coating fresh-keeping paper bag was used to package the leaves of Perilla frutescens in this study. The composite coating solution used in the experiment was prepared by dissolving chitosan, sodium D-isoascorbate, tea polyphenols and calcium chloride in acetic acid aqueous solution in a certain ratio. The effects of different component concentrations in the composite coating solution of fresh-keeping paper bags on the sensory quality, VC content and weight loss rate of Perilla frutescens were investigated by single factor and orthogonal experiments, and the optimal component concentration ratio of the composite coating solution was determined as follows: Chitosan concentration 2.0%, sodium D-isoascorbate concentration 2.4%, tea polyphenols concentration 0.25%, and calcium chloride concentration 0.6%. The physical, chemical and antibacterial properties analysis showed that when the coating amount was 30 g/m2, the composite coating solution had formed uniform coating on the surface of the paper. At this time, the coated paper had strong antibacterial ability, and the coating penetrated into the fiber gap of paper, so that the weight, thickness, elongation and moisture content of paper were improved, the water vapor permeability decreased, and the tensile strength and wettability decreased slightly, which met the packaging requirements of Perilla frutescens leaves and would have broad prospects for development in the field of fruit and vegetable packaging.

In this paper, 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) controlled release packaging paper was prepared by mixing 1-methylcyclopropene with different proportions of ethyl cellulose ether (EC) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) and then coating it on the paper base. The release mechanism was studied. Saimaiti apricot fruits stored at 2 ℃ were treated with 1-MCP controlled release packaging paper. The effects of 1-MCP controllable slow-release packaging paper on respiratory intensity, hardness, titratable acid, soluble solids, peel color and commodity rate of apricot fruit during storage were studied in order to obtain a kind of fresh-keeping paper which could effectively prolong the storage period of apricot fruit. The results showed that under the conditions of 95% RH, 2 ℃ and 80% polyacrylic acid (PAA), the particle collapse of 1-MCP powder made the gas release slowly, and the release mechanism parameter was 0.49, and the release rate increased with PAA content. Controlled release 1-MCP-coated paper could inhibit the arrival of the peak of respiration intensity of apricot fruit, delay the decrease of hardness, titratable acid and soluble solid content, and maintain the color of peel. The results showed that controlled release 1-MCP-coated paper could effectively maintain the quality of apricot fruits stored in low temperature environment, and would provide some reference for the application of controlled release 1-MCP-coated paper to the storage of other fruits and vegetables.

Objective: Established a group of models used to quickly distinguish anti-counterfeit cigarette packaging paper. Methods: The model based on the same color oil on packaging paper from 3 different brands: Yunyan, Yuxi, and Hongtashan. The Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy （FTIR） spectrum were collected from 116 samples totally by Attenuated Total Reflection （ATR） accessary. 56 spectrum were used to build the models and 20 samples of each brand were used to verification. Spectrum were second derivative processed and spectral ranges were selected as 3 200~2 700, 1 800~1 580, and 801~720 cm-1. Results: Using Mahalanobis distance discriminant method to establish 4 models （3 brands and 1 multiple）, all of the accuracy of models reached to 100%. Conclusion: This is the first time to use the same color oil FTIR spectrum to distinguish real and fake cigarette packaging paper which were highly improve selection efficiency for large number of samples.

Objective： A method for simple and rapid determination of potassium content in cigarette paper will be built for workshops of cigarette factory. Methods: An ion-selective electrode method was used by comparing with the pretreatment methods for cigarette paper samples and potential response behaviors of potassium ion-selective electrodes in different buffer solutions. Results: The potassium ion selective electrode possessed excellent response performance for K+ in lithium acetate buffer solution （0.1 mol/L, pH 7.0） with a linear response range of 1.0×10-5 ~1.0×10-2 mol/L, a slope of 55.79 mV/dec （25 ℃）, and a lower limit of detection of 2.14×10-6 mol/L. The average relative standard deviations of the K+ selective electrode on cigarette paper samples were 0.55% for intra-day test and 2.8% for inter-day test, both less than 5%. The test results of the electrode method were in well agreement with that of ion chromatography, with an average relative deviation of 4.1% （n=10） and recoveries between 95.0% and 101.9%. It was demonstrated effectively through a consecutive test over one week. Conclusion: Among the pretreatment methods for cigarette paper samples, the ultrasonic extraction of potassium ions with 1% diluted acetic acid for 30 min has been found to be fast, simple and environmentally friendly. The ion-selective electrode method is accurate and reliable, which is suitable for the rapid detection of potassium in cigarette paper.

Objective: To improve the accuracy and validity of the measurement data of solvent residues in food packaging paper. Methods: Taking the HS GC-MS measurement system as the research object, variation sources in the measurement process was separated by using the measurement system analysis, and the traditional control chart and EWMA control chart of repeatability and reproducibility were established respectively to effectively monitor the detection error of the measurement system. Results: ① HS GC/MS had high measurement accuracy, with GRR of about 9.76%, and the gauging ability of the measurement system was relatively good. ② Through the combination of periodic measurement system analysis and control chart method, the effective separation and monitoring of repeatability and reproducibility variance components can be realized. ③ The repeatability can be monitored in real time through the daily gauging data, which was helpful to find the fault of measurement equipment in time and ensure the reliability of gauging results. ④ EWMA chart of repeatability can give early warning of measuring equipment fault faster than traditional control chart. Conclusion: Separating and monitoring variation sources of the measurement system by using variance analysis method can effectively ensure the stability of HS GC-MS equipment and improve the effectiveness of solvent residue detection.

Background: One of the possible carcinogenic substances found in foods is Acrylamide (AA). This study aims to combine and innovate sea grapes (Caulerpa racemosa) extract with activated carbon into paper towels that can absorb AA levels in fried foods. Methods: The paper towel was created with composition of activated carbon: sea grapes extract: paper pulp using following formula: F0=0:0:100; F1=5:5:100; F2=10:5:100; F3=20:5:100. The optimal paper towel formulation was chosen based on AA reduction, fat absorption, and organoleptic properties. Data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 26. Results: Wrapping a fried potato using the sea grapes paper towel enriched with activated carbon for a min decreased significantly the levels of AA and oil. Although, it significantly reduced the levels of AA and percent of oil in the fried potato, but it did not change the taste and texture (p=0.566 and p=0.330). The best formulation of paper towels with composition of activated carbon, sea grapes extract, and paper pulp of 20:5:100 had the best AA level reduction, oil absorption properties, and a good taste score. Conclusion: This study is the first to successfully combine and innovate sea grapes extract with activated carbon as a food tissue that can reduce AA in fried foods. DOI: 10.18502/jfqhc.9.2.10647

The North American pawpaw (Asimina triloba) is a tropical fruit that is known to be the largest edible fruit native to the United States. The fruit has remained uncommercialized because of the rapid changes in quality that occur after the fruit is harvested. However, only a few studies have evaluated the quality of the fruit during postharvest storage. This study aimed to assess the effect of different concentrations of chitosan and sodium alginate coatings, and freshness paper treatments on the quality characteristics of pawpaw fruits during storage and use TOPSIS-Shannon entropy analyses to determine which treatment best maintains the quality of the fruits from three cultivars. The results show that the chitosan coatings were more effective in slowing moisture loss in Sunflower fruits than in Susquehanna and 10–35 fruits over time. Similarly, the freshness paper treatment controlled moisture loss more effectively than sodium alginate coatings. The 10–35 fruits with 1% chitosan coating had very little change in skin color and physical appearance compared to all the other treatments. The TOPSIS-Shannon entropy analyses showed that the 10–35 fruits with 1% chitosan had the most stable quality over time, followed by the Susquehanna and Sunflower fruits with 2% chitosan coatings. The experimental data from different cultivars, treatments, and storage conditions, proved the shelf-life of pawpaw fruit could be extended from 5 days to 15–20 days depending on the cultivar. These findings will enable the creation of markets for pawpaw fruits and allow countries that grow them to generate revenue from this underutilized specialty crop.

According to the results of this study, the paper strip biosensor can detect pesticide at very low concentration like fungicide, organochlorine, organophosphate, carbamate, and herbicide group ranges from 1 to 10, 1–50, 250–500, 1–50, and 1 μg/L, respectively in animal feed, water, milk and soil. This is a significant improvement from the previous study, which found that the paper strip biosensor could only detect pesticide levels of up to 500 or 1000 μg/L. A total of 436 samples were collected from the dairy farm, including 58 samples of green feed, 54 samples of dry feed, 45 samples of concentrated feed, 41 samples of fermented feed, 49 samples of manure, 54 samples of soil, and 86 samples of milk. PSA (Primary Secondary Amine) and MgSO4 (1:2 ratio) were used to remove pigments from dairy farm samples to prevent the enzyme–pesticide interaction leading to colour development on the strip, which was successfully achieved. Using a strip-based test and an optimized extraction protocol, pesticides were detected in 38.49% in the samples. Limit of Detection of 15 pesticides from the organochlorine, organophosphate, carbamate, neonicotinoid, pyrethroid, ryanoid, strobilurins, and triazole groups recommended for use in dairy farms were evaluated in feed/fodder. Pesticides were being detected in various dairy farm matrices using the newly developed test. The developed technology can be used as a semi-quantitative test for pesticides monitoring in the dairy farm as well as for screening of primary produce under field condition for organic certification of various food/feed commodities.

Research background. Fish freshness and quality monitoring are of high importance for consumers, retailers and fishing industry. Therefore, developing novel approaches that are simple, fast, non-destructive and inexpensive to monitor fish freshness in real time is of great value. One alternative is using Intelligent or smart packaging to monitor the freshness or conditions of packaged fish. Experimental approach. On-package dual indicator label based on paper-based pH sensors was developed for real-time monitoring of the milkfish (Chanos chanos) freshness. The paper-based pH sensor was prepared using bromocresol purple (BCP) and bromothymol blue (BTB) that were immobilized onto a filter paper by dip coating. Herein, the fish degradation could be monitored visually by the dual indicator label, where the BCP changes from yellow to pink, then finally to purple, while the BTP changes from orange to green-yellow, and finally to green-blue to indicate fresh, medium fresh or spoiled product, respectively. Results and conclusion. The label responds to the pH change caused by the fish degradation and the colour of dual indicator changes to show the fish freshness at room temperature and chiller conditions. This pH change was followed by changes in the other parameters related to fish freshness, such as total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN), total viable count (TVC), texture and odour. The threshold of fish spoilage at room temperature was observed at 8 h and under chiller conditions at 7 days when the deterioration time point was indicated by the colour changes. Thus, it can be concluded that the dual indicator label can be applied as a simple and low-cost on-package active label for fish freshness monitoring. Novelty and scientific contribution. Increasing consumer concerns about quality and safe food worldwide has boosted the search for a novel approach to food monitoring. In this work, a simple and practical on-package dual indicator label for real-time monitoring of fish freshness was developed. The colorimetric pH sensor was obtained simply by dip-coating of filter paper, yet it enables easy and accurate detection of fish spoilage with the naked eye. Similarly, the dual indicator label changes colour for other freshness parameters, such as TVBN, TVC, texture and odour.

In the food quality and safety arena, there is a need to develop novel and sustainable methodologies that can help in the prevention of foodborne diseases. Herein, we report the development of a rapid conducting polymer strip-based sensor using Polyaniline-pectin (PANI-PEC) for the detection of Escherichia coli in milk and milk products. Polyaniline-pectin nanoparticles stabilized with biopolymer pectin were synthesized and its characterization studies such as FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, electrical conductivity and particle size analysis were done. The assay parameters were optimized for the selective detection of E. coli in milk and milk products. The concentration of PANI-PEC solution immobilized/strip was optimized to be 3 mg/mL as it exhibited good sensitivity and colour intensity. Based on acid production and selectivity for E.coli, concentrations of media components like lactose, tryptophan, yeast extract, chondroitin sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphate, potassium chloride, tergitol-7, gentamycin sulphate and ampicillin trihydrate were optimized as 0.9, 0.1, 0.45, 0.015, 0.1, 2, 0.0125, 0.00016 and 0.015 respectively and sample volume was optimized to 500 μL. The developed PANI-PEC colorimetric strip-based sensor detects 0.52 ± 0.17 log CFU/mL E. coli within 10: 21 h (h). Further shelf-life study revealed that the developed PANI-PEC colorimetric sensor strips are stable at room temperature up to six months exhibiting the same sensitivity. The results obtained here indicate that this novel and simple paper based colorimetric sensor holds potential for application in food industries as a reliable and rapid method for detection of E. coli in milk and milk products at various stages of production and processing.

The article presents a study on the changes occurring in the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of “Korivka” fondant candies when replacing traditional paper wrapper with edible coating. Paper industry refers to sources of intensive pollution. It is expedient to use edible films and coatings for confectionery products in order to comply with the requirements of the Directive 94/62 /EU of the European Parliament and Union on Packaging and Packaging Waste, aimed at minimizing packaging materials waste. Edible coating is made of natural polymers – starch, gelatin together with plasticizer – urea or glycerol and hydrophobic component – linseed oil and solvent. The proposed composition of edible coating is completely utilized due to its use along with candies. Candies have been studied according to organoleptic parameters, humidity and mass change, as well as substances in view of reducing 3 month-shelf life. In addition, the change in sucrose crystals size during the storage period through a microscope with further image rendering by computer program has been determined.

Vaccine is the best way to tackle the virus outbreak, because vaccines could reprogram immunity systems to create their own antibodies. Muslims are obliged to consume only halal product. Vaccine needed to follow halal standardization to be used in Islamic countries. This study has a purpose to observe the connection between halal and vaccine in research papers indexed by Scopus website. This study uses papers indexed in Scopus website as secondary data. There are two kinds of data, based on the organization of co-authorship, and co-occurrence of authors’ topic. There are 46 numbers of data the organization of co-authorship and 68 of co-occurrence of authors’ topic. The data is analyzed using Vosviewer software. The result shows that topic of vaccine has connection to halal and fatwa/ or ulama council’s statement. Thus, non muslim countries such as USA and Australia have more relevance points than Muslim countries. Based on the keywords, there are topic about vaccine and COVID-19. In can be concluded that halal and vaccine is intertwined each other, especially in muslim countries.

Cabbage (Brassica oleracea) seeds were germinated and grown for 35 days in an organic standard substrate contained in either plastic, peat, paper, or newspaper containers to determine whether the container material might affect growth. Days to emergence, days to first leaf, and developmental morphological traits and physiological characteristics were monitored. Differences in evaporation and pH of water in contact with the containers were measured in separate experiments. Evaporation was lowest from plastic and highest from peat containers, while pH was lowest with water in contact with peat containers. Plant growth was fastest and most robust in plastic containers as demonstrated by their shoot height, stem diameter, and root and shoot dry weights. Seedlings grown in newspaper containers presented exceedingly poor growth and showed signs of stress.

Ethiopia is believed to have the largest livestock population in Africa. Livestock subsector makes the major contribution to the overall economy. The livestock sector accounts for 19% of the GDP and generates 16–19% of the foreign exchange earnings of the country. It constitutes around 35% of the agricultural GDP, or 45% if indirect contributions are taken into account. With the rapidly growing population, increasing urbanization, and rising incomes, the domestic demand for meat, milk, and eggs is expected to increase significantly in the foreseeable future. The livestock production system in Ethiopia is traditional and contributes to both subsistence and cash generation. Hide is the raw skin of mature animals of larger kinds, example cattle, horse, and also other large animals. Skin is the skin of fully grown animals of smaller kinds. Hide and skin in the subsector is constrained by various structural, production, information exchange, and quality problems, as well as financial constraints. The opportunities of hides and skins sector in Ethiopia are raw material availability due to the large livestock base in pastoral areas, ready market, there is a growing national and international market for hides. To improve the hide and skin sector situation in Ethiopia, training needs to be provided for producers and collectors, collection and marketing of hide and skin should be done immediately after slaughtering, and household, government, and national and international organizations need to work together.

In order to explore the effect of bagging on the wax compositions and storage quality of ‘Yali’ pear fruit, the differences and correlations of wax content and distribution, nutrition and quality indicators, and antioxidant properties of the two different treatments (polyethylene, (PE) plastic film bags and three-layer paper bags) stored at 25 ℃±1 ℃ were analyzed. The fruits were bagged at day 60 after blooming, then the bags were removed at harvest, and no-bagged fruit acted as the control. The results showed that the highest rate of fruit weight loss was found in PE plastic film bags-treated fruit, while there was no difference in fruit hardness, brittleness and compactness between the control and the two treatments within 14 days of storage. The increases in contents of wax compositions alkenes, fatty aldehydes, fatty alcohols, esters, and total wax were significantly delayed in the two treatments. The contents of alkanes C27 and C29, alkenes C24-C26, fatty acid C18:1, fatty aldehydes C26 and C34, even number fatty alcohols C22-C28, seven esters, and triterpenoids (such as α-farnesene, β-amyrin, lupeol, and β-amyrenone) in the two treatments were lower than the control. In addition, compared to the PE plastic film bags treatment, the decline in contents of wax compositions alkene C26, fatty acids C16 and C18:1, even number fatty aldehydes C28-C32, two esters (C22:1 alcohol-C18:1 acid and C24:1 alcohol-C18:1 acid), triterpenoids (Urs-12-en-28-al,3-(acetyloxy)-,(3á)-and Urs-12-en-28-al) were delayed by the three-layer paper bags treatment. Furthermore, in comparison with PE plastic film bags treatment, higher contents of peel flavonoids, peel total phenols (at day 14), fruit titratable acid and Vc (at day 14), and higher DPPH clearance rate were found in three-layer paper bags-treated fruit. According to PCA analysis of wax components, the control and the three-layer paper bags treatment were belonged to one group, while PE plastic film bags treatment was divided into the other group. 3-Monochloro-1,2-propandiol (3-MCPD) is a carcinogenic food contaminant. 3-MCPD is formed during food processing, and can also be derived from food contact packaging materials, including paper. Wet-strength resin is often added into paper food packaging to provide moisture resistance and thus enhancing food shelf-life and consumer usage. The wet-strength resins which are manufactured from epichlorohydrin-based starting materials, are known to initiate the formation of 3-MCPD. Thus, the objectives of this study were: 1) to validate an analytical method for the analysis 3-MCPD in duplex paper packaging, 2) to analyze3-MCPD content in duplex paper, and 3) to analyze 3-MCPD migration from duplex paper packaging into food simulants. 3-MCPD content in duplex paper was analyzed by a validated GC-MS method with linearity value (R2) of 0.993, limit of detection (LOD) of 6.65 ppb, limit of quantification (LOQ) of 22.15 ppb, and recovery range of 83.00–114.13%. The 3-MCPD content of five sample duplex papers obtained from different packaging paper manufacturers were ranging from 753.43 to 825.36 ppb, and there was no significant differences between the samples. Direct contact between food simulants and duplex paper for 24 hours at 40°C generated migration of 3-MCPD at levels of 40.55 to 57.61%.

In this work, Pinus masoniana and Saxifraga stolonifera (L.) Meerb. essential oils were employed to develop preservative materials (i.e., preservative paper and preservative tablet), and effects of the preservative material treatments on Shine Muscat grapes under different temperatures (room temperature and low temperature) were also investigated. The results showed that the preservative paper was more effective than the preservative tablet to maintain the quality of the Shine Muscat in storage time. In addition, grapes treated with the preservative paper under low-temperature storage exhibited the optimum quality among all. Pinus masoniana-Saxifraga stolonifera (L.) Meerb. essential oils preservative paper effectively inhibited the weight loss rate, maintained the color and hardness, slowed down the decrease of total soluble solids, acidity and reducing sugar. After storage for 5 weeks under low temperature with the preservative paper, the weight loss rate of the grapes was 0.36%, significantly lower than that of the control group (0.81%, P

The cell-free biosensor is a tool designed to detect trace substances based on a cell-free system, which solves the problems of the traditional cell-based biosensor including having no ability to detect toxic substances, long response time, being controlled by living cells, and inconvenient operation. In recent years, cell-free biosensors have attracted extensive attention for their wide detection range, fast response speed, high sensitivity and portability. In this paper, the construction and characteristics of different types of cell-free sensors are reviewed. In addition, their applications in the detection of metal ions, pesticide residues and veterinary drug residues are introduced, and future prospects also are discussed.

Objective: To reduce the rejection rate of ZJ17 cigarette machine, shorten the adjustment time and improve the production efficiency. Methods: The rubber roller phase alignment device was developed to accurately measure the position of the rubber line by the sensor, and the measurement signal was transmitted to the industrial computer in real time. The shaft encoder signal was used to judge the offset of the rubber line, and the servo motor was driven to automatically adjust the phase of the rubber roll, so as to realize the real-time control of the position of the rubber line. Results: The rubber roller phase alignment device was easy to install and easy to maintain. The debugging time of the equipment was significantly shortened, and the debugging smoke branches are reduced from more than 30 000 before the transformation to within 1 000. Conclusion: The application of rubber roller phase alignment device improves production efficiency, and the cost reduction and efficiency are significantly effective.

Objective: The pyrolysis transfer rate of aglycones from 7 kinds of glucosides added to cigarette paper in mainstream and sidestream smoke was studied. Methods: 5-methylfurfuryl alcohol glucoside, menthol glucoside, anisyl alcohol glucoside, leaf alcohol glucoside, phenylethanol glucoside, ethyl vanillin glucoside and vanillin glucoside were applied to the surface of cigarette paper and inject into cigarette according to the 0.01% of the weight of cut tobacco respectively. The transfer rates of aglycones in mainstream smoke and side stream smoke were determined under two kinds of flavoring methods. On this basis, the transfer rules of seven aglycones in mainstream smoke and sidestream smoke were studied when the concentration of 0.001%, 0.010% and 0.050% was applied to cigarette paper. Results: In mainstream smoke, the transfer rates of seven aglycones in cut tobacco were higher than those added to cigarette paper, but the opposite was true in sidestream smoke; 5-methylfurfuryl alcohol had the highest transfer rate of aglycones in mainstream smoke and sidestream smoke, and menthol had the lowest transfer rate, followed by leaf alcohol, anisyl alcohol, phenylethanol, ethyl vanillin and vanillin. Under the condition of 0.001% addition, the transfer rates of seven aglycones in mainstream and side stream smoke were 0.27%~1.24% and 0.42%~1.71% respectively, 0.010% addition were 0.38%~1.87% and 0.54%~2.52% respectively, 0.050% addition were 0.31%~1.56% and 0.47%~2.19% respectively. Conclusion: The transfer rates of seven aglycones in side stream smoke were higher than those in mainstream smoke at three additive gradients, the transfer rates of aglycones in mainstream and side stream smoke showed a trend of first increasing and then decreasing with the increase of addition.

Abstract The application of the paper‐based microfluidic device (µPAD) as a potentially significant platform for clinical diagnoses has gained a great interest during the recent years. This work presented a technically ultrasimple, low‐cost, effective, and rapid method for the µPADs fabrication by pasting a hydrophilic flower‐like paper mask to a hydrophobic PVC substrate, which was purchased with adhesive on it. The whole manufacture process could be implemented in a few seconds by untrained personnel. To demonstrate the feasibility of this method in real‐world situations, the developed paper device was employed for colorimetric assays of glucose in artificial urine and nitrite in artificial saliva. The main analysis parameters, for example, the optimum volumes of reagents, reaction time, and so forth, were seriatim optimized. Under optimal conditions, the detection limits were 0.9 mM and 19.5 µM for glucose and nitrite, respectively; the detection ranges were 0.9–30 mmol/L and 19.5–312.5 µmol/L for glucose and nitrite analyses, respectively. These results showed that this equipment‐free µPAD had great potentials for the qualitative or semiquantitative detection of glucose and nitrite in real samples.

The purpose of this activity is to guide high school/equivalent teachers in Bintan regency in order to capable to make correct scientific papers good free from plagiarism with the help of Mendeley reference management. Implementation of activities in the form of workshop or training with lecture methods, discussions, question and answer, and projects. The activity was carried out for two days in the form of workshop and two days in the form of independent assignments. This community service activity was considered successful since 80% participants increasing their knowledge of Mendeley's reference management and being able to apply the knowledge in writing free plagiarizm scientific paper.

Agent-Based Models (ABMs) have been adopted to simulate very different kinds of complex systems, from biological systems to complex coupled human-natural systems. In particular, when used to simulate man-managed systems, they have the advantage of allowing human behavioral aspects to be considered in the modelling framework. This paper provides a literature review of the application of ABMs for agricultural and land use modelling. One section is specifically devoted to the coupling of ABMs and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models. The aim of the paper is to give a perspective of the different “modelling blocks” one needs to take into account to build an ABM, dealing with general issues that must be considered regardless of the domain of application (such as validity, uncertainty, parameter sensitivity, agent definition, data provision), and providing concrete examples related specifically to ABMs applied to agricultural and land use modelling. The paper highlights the difficulties that the modelers can encounter in dealing with each of these modelling blocks, and presents the solutions that can be envisioned (mentioning those that have been applied in certain cases in the literature). As a general conclusion, we can observe that solutions based on complex systems simulations are starting, to some extent, to be influential in policymaking; however, practical user-friendly tools that allow scenario simulations also to non-expert users are clearly still lacking.
