Splanchnotrophidae Norman and Scott, 1906 is a family of parasitic copepods that infest nudibranchian and sacoglossan sea slugs. In this study, a new species of splanchnotrophid copepod, Lomanoticola nishiharai n. sp., is described based on specimens of both sexes collected from the facelinid nudibranch, Sakuraeolis enosimensis (Baba, 1930), in the Seto Inland Sea off Hiroshima, central Japan. It represents the third species of Lomanoticola Scott and Scott, 1895 and is characterized by the following female characters: the cephalosome distinctly protruded; the second and third lateral processes on the body originated from same bases; the caudal rami bears a seta V which almost same as long as the rami. Ultrastructural observations revealed that the cuticular surface of the lateral process on the female body is covered with numerous protuberances that may have protective functions against the cellular immune system of the host. Integumentary and alimentary tissues were ultrastructurally examined in two pycnophyid kinorhynchs, Pycnophyes oshoroensis and Kinorhynchus yushini, to elucidate some aspects of their ecology. The body is entirely enveloped by an epicuticle layer with no gaps between cuticle plates and joints. The cuticular layer has a structure dense enough to prevent invasion by foreign organisms. The cuticular surface is overlaid by a mucus layer that may form a hydrophilic surface. The alimentary contents were heterogeneous, probably including some cellular components, such as chloroplast-like structures. Kinorhynchs likely break down food particles in the pharyngeal bulb by pressing it between the cuticulated epithelia. The pharyngeal crown was located in front of the pharyngeal bulb and had a thick wall with a striated sub-structure. Contraction of the pharyngeal bulb probably increases the internal pressure of the pharyngeal crown; this may be one reason for the thick wall of the pharyngeal crown. Nutrients appear to be taken up by midgut epithelial cells through both absorption via microvilli and endocytosis. Mihbaicola sakamakii is a mesoparasitic copepod that infests the branchiostegal membranes of groupers (Perciformes: Serranidae). In this study, we observed M. sakamakii within host tissue. Histologically, copepods were found enclosed inside a pouch composed of the thickened epidermis of the host, tightly encased on all sides by the host epidermal pouch wall. There were no host blood cells or other food resources in the pouch lumen. Since the host epidermis was intact and continuous, even in the vicinity of the oral region of the parasite, the copepod would not have access to the host blood in this state. However, the stomach (ampullary part of the mid gut) was filled with granular components, the majority of which were crystalloids that likely originated from fish erythrocyte hemoglobin. We supposed that the parasite drinks blood exuded from the lesion in the fish caused by copepod entry into the host tissue. Invasion of the parasite may elicit immune responses in the host, but there were no traces on the copepod of any cellular immune reactions, such as encapsulation. The array of minute protuberances on the copepod cuticle surface may be involved in avoidance of cell adhesion. After the lesion has healed, the copepod is enclosed in a tough epidermal pouch, in which it gradually digests the contents of its stomach and continues egg production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new photosymbiotic didemnid, Lissoclinum midui sp. nov., is described from coral reefs in the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. Colonies of the didemnid are green due to Prochloron algal symbionts, which are distributed solely in the tunic. The new species is placed in Lissoclinum because of its uncoiled vas deferens and the presence of globular spicules. However, two unique characters distinguish this species from all other didemnid ascidians: the absence of a common cloacal system, and the presence of an unknown organ in the bottom wall of the branchial sac. In the phylogenetic trees inferred from partial sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, the new species diverged at the basal point of the clade of four photosymbiotic Lissoclinum species analyzed here. Terpios hoshinota is a black-colored sponge encrusting both live and dead corals. On examination, we determined that in the mesohyl, unicellular cyanobacteria were distributed extracellularly in dense populations; roughly half of the area in the histological sections was occupied by the cyanobacterial cells in the mesohyl of the inner zone. Pigment extraction tests of whole sponges and microspectrophotometrical analysis of cyanobacterial symbionts showed that the black coloration of the sponge is attributable to extremely densely packed cyanobacteria expressing R-phycoerythrin. Spermatic follicles were found in the mesohyl of specimens collected in summer, indicating seasonal reproduction, which is likely to play a crucial role in long-distance dispersal. Didemnum molle, a colonial ascidian that harbors the symbiotic cyanophyte Prochloron spp., is distributed throughout the coral reefs of the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. Several morphotypes of D. molle are characterized by the color and size of their colonies. Previous molecular phylogeny inferred from gene sequences for the cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COl) identified four morphotypes (i.e., gray, brown, white, and large) from several sites in the Ryukyu Islands, Japan. With the addition of 17 specimens, including another morphotype (small), from several collection sites (Taiwan and the Ryukyus), the present report demonstrates genetic separation among the five morphotypes based on COl sequences. A number of sexually mature specimens of the different morphotypes were collected at the same times and sites, indicating reproductive isolation among morphotypes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Partial sequences of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COl) gene were determined for six species of the genus Diplosoma (Ascidiacea, Didemnidae) to develop tools for species identification. Because each Diplosoma species has distinctly different COI haplotype(s), the gene sequence seems to be usable for species discrimination in this ascidian genus. The phylogenetic hypothesis supported by the COI data is congruent with the distribution of character states of the retractor muscle. In this paper, we describe a new Diplosoma species harboring symbiotic cyanophytes, found on Miyakojima Island, Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan. Diplosoma aggregatum sp. nov. forms mosaic-like aggregates of small colonies. Although the zooids of D. aggregatum are similar to those of D. virens, these species are differentiated by colony form and COI sequences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two new species of Diplosoma are described from coral reefs in the Ryukyu Archipelago, Japan: D. watanabei sp. nov. and D. gumavirens sp. nov. Colonies of both species are green due to algal symbionts of Prochloron, which are distributed in the common cloacal cavity. Both species are characterized by the point of emergence of the retractor muscle end e unique combination of stigma numbers among the four rows of the branchial sac. There are three adhesive pepillae in the embryos of D. watanabei, as in most ascidian embryos and larvae, whereas the pre-hatching embryos of D, gumavirens sp. nov. posses 12-16 adhesive papillae.
