Murex Vindobonensis Hoernes — Mayer 1864: 71. Discussion. As with the species above, this determination was based on two small fragments from Feteirinhas (= Ponta das Salinas) and said to belong to the Murex erinaceus group. Today, this species is placed in the genus Ocenebra Gray, 1847. Two sub-species are recognized O. vindobonensis vindobonensis (Ĥrnes, 1853), present in the Lower and Middle Miocene Paratethys and eastern Proto-Mediterranean, and O. vindobonensis ligeriana (Tournouër, 1875) from the Atlantic middle Miocene of the Loire Basin, France. Three new species of the neogastropod family Raphitomidae Bellardi, 1875, are described from the Croatian waters of the Adriatic Sea: Raphitoma petanii Prkic, Giannuzzi-Savelli & Pusateri n. sp., R. pusaterii Prkic & Giannuzzi-Savelli n. sp. and R. stanici Prkic, Giannuzzi-Savelli & Pusateri n. sp. The new species are diagnosed by teleoconch characters and by genetic data (COI sequences) in an integrative taxonomy framework. They belong to a group of species with microgranules on the external surface of all teleoconch whorls and all three have a multispiral protoconch indicating a planktotrophic larval phase. The first two species are so far known only from material found in Croatia. R. petanii Prkic, Giannuzzi-Savelli & Pusateri n. sp. and R. stanici Prkic, Giannuzzi-Savelli & Pusateri n. sp. are predominantly shallow-water species, whereas R. pusaterii Prkic & Giannuzzi-Savelli n. sp. has been so far collected only from deeper bottoms with presence of the red coral, Corallium rubrum (Linnaeus, 1758). Syntypes of Murex echinatusBrocchi, 1814 are figured and commented.

Murex (Muricantha) trunculus var. propeconglobata Bellini, 1902a: 99���100 Type locality: Capri Island (Naples, Tyrrhenian Sea, Italy). Original description: ���rigonfio, varici mutiche. Material examined: a single shell, presumably fossil, labelled by Monterosato ��� M. trunculus v. propeconglobata Bell���Boll. Della Soc. Remarks: having been instituted on the basis of insignificant morphological characteristics, we rank it infrasubspecific, and thus not available (ICZN 2012: Art. 10.2, 45.5, 45.6, glossary). Despite this, it was listed as a variety of Hexaplex trunculus (Linneus, 1758) by several subsequent authors (Dollfus 1926; Priolo 1964; Settepassi 1970; Sabelli et al. 1992; Houart 2001). This taxon was not figured by Bellini (1902a); however, shell characters highlighted in the original description clearly point to H. trunculus. Excellent heterogeneous catalyst was developed from waste murex turnispina shell and used in the transesterification of waste cooking oil (WCO) with methanol to obtain fatty acid methyl ester (FAME), otherwise known as bio-diesel. Finely ground murex turnispina shell was subjected to controlled calcination temperatures ranging from 500 to 900ºC for 4h at a ramping rate of 4ºC/min. The characterization results indicate that this process substantially improved both BET specific surface area and the amount of basic sites. Transesterification of waste cooking oil was used to determine the activity of developed catalyst. The effects of different reaction parameters such as the calcination temperature, molar ratio of methanol to WCO, catalyst loading and reaction time on the transesterification reaction were investigated. The data obtained showed that at 830ºC calcination temperature, catalyst amount of 3 wt. %, methanol/oil mole ratio of 6:1, 2 h reaction time and at methanol reflux reaction temperature of 65ºC, 99% FAME yield was obtained. The catalyst showed good stability during the recycling experiments and it was sustained for four consecutive runs. Murex turnispina shell-derived catalyst is cost effective catalyst for FAME production via transesterification of WCO with methanol and it offers a novel opportunity to utilize both waste cooking oil and waste murex turnispina shells.

Po-pu-re (porphyra) denotes the deep red/ purple colour delivered from sea shells extraction and processing of five species and conversion to dye has been practice in ancient world, especially in the Mediterranean Sea. Archaeological excavations have shown that murex was used in Greece and in other areas, such as Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Italy, Spain and generally throughout the Mediterranean basin. The colour of murex was priceless and used in wall-paintings and textiles. Many fabrics have been found in Crete, Egypt and Israel. Considering the ancient texts, including those of Plutarch, Pliny, Aristotle, Herodotus and Xenokrates, it has been shown that its identification can be advanced by studying chemical production of purple-dye, while using spectroscopy and chemical analysis the basic chemistry, the dibromoindigotin (DBI), is identified. The present report reviews major murex producing workshops in the Mediterranean and archaeometrical analyses that identify this marine shell.

Murex tautiranus Curtiss, 1938, a synonym of Monoplex nicobaricus (R��ding, 1798) Original description (pp. 189, 190). ���The Tahiti murex, which shares with many other sea-snails the name of pupu, is a slug-like animal, which, when it goes into its shell, has the gray bottom of its foot across the opening. Its shell is very rough, but not spiny; it is solid and heavy. It is spiral, and spindle-shaped; it is an inch and seveneighths in length. The color is variegated, greenish, brown, and lavender. The outer edge of the opening is green, while the inner side has elevated whitish streaks, like flat teeth, the ground color being orange. The opening ends in a straight canal, seven-sixteenths off an inch long, behind. This is found in the sea below tide-mark. ��� (Murex tautiranus. (In the sea, near Tautira.))���. Identity. Based on Curtiss���s rather detailed descriptions of the conchological characteristics (i.e. spindleshaped, very rough, solid and heavy shell; colour variegated, greenish, brown, and lavender; aperture [inner side] with elevated teeth-like whitish streaks on an orange ground colour; siphonal canal straight [about a quarter of the total shell length]), the ���Tahiti murex ��� is very likely Monoplex nicobaricus (R��ding, 1798), albeit a rather small specimen. DISTRIBUTION. — Coral Sea, bathymetric range unknown for living specimens. This is the 4th known specimen; all were collected as shells only. This record extends the geographical distribution southwards. The type material range is 19°36’- 19°42’S, 158°30’- 158°32’E. REMARKS The shell of Murex protocrassus is similar to those of the various subspecies of M. brevispina (M. brevispina brevispina Lamarck,1822, M. brevispina macgillivrayi Dohrn, 1862, M.brevispina senilis Jousseaume,1874, and M.brevispina ornamentalis Ponder&Vokes,1988) but differs from them in its more numerous axial ridges on the early teleoconch whorls and in its more spinose siphonal canal. Other differences are its large and broad protoconch, which indicates intracapsular larval development, and the absence of a labral tooth. Due to the lack of the labral tooth it cannot be classified in Murex s.s. It is therefore included in Promurex as in Merle et al. (2011). The French fossil Murex spinicosta Bronn, 1831 (Fig. 4C), another species without a labral tooth, was classified in Promurex by Ponder & Vokes (1988: 15), and was illustrated by Landau et al. REMARKS. — Murex tenuirostrum is probably the most common species in the genus. It has been wrongly identified as M. tribulus Linné, 1758 in many publications but differs from M. tribulus in having a more nodose (cancellate) sculpture, fewer spines on the siphonal canal, and more rounded and nodose first teleoconch whorls (Ponder & Vokes 1988: 24). REMARKS. — At first sight, the Fiji specimens seem to differ from typical M. troscheli (in their heavier varices, narrower axial ribs, and absence of brown colouration at the top of the spiral cords); however, a careful study of the protoconch, spiral and axial sculpture of the teleoconch whorls, and organization of the spines leaves no doubt about their correct identification. The shells from Fiji are uniformly whitish, smaller and more slender than the typical form.
