Department of Chemistry, Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, West Bengal, India Manuscript received 21 January 1980, revised 5 September 1980, accepted 5 November 1980 The extraction of uranium from acetate solution with Versatic 10 in benzene was investigated. Uranium was quantitatively extracted at pH 5.6-5.8 from 0.1Macetic acid solution. The study included the effects of pH, extractant concentration, diluent, acetate ion concentration, ammonium sulphate concentration and contact time on the extraction of uranium. The probable composition or the extracted species was UO2R2-2HR (HR=Versatic 10). Uranium was separated from magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, manganese, cobalt, silver, cadmium, lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neo-dymium, samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, mercury, thallium, lead and thorium. Important quantitative separations or uranium from synthetic mixtures were also carried out.
