Die Schulchronik von Uetz beschäftigt sich einführend mit dem Geschlecht derer von der Schulenburg, die langjährig das Kirchenpatronat in Cobbel und Uetz ausübten. Da der Chronist Karl Beneke zugleich Küster, Kantor und Schulmeister war, beschäftigen ihn auch einige Kirchen- und Glaubensangelegenheiten. Eine kurze Erwähnung finden zunächst die Amtsvorgänger Benekes, bevor er über die eigentlichen Schulangelegenheiten schreibt. Dabei thematisiert er jährlich die Schülerzahlen, das Personal sowie auftretende Krankheiten wie Scharlach, Diphterie, Influenza oder Masern. Besonderheit dieser Chronik ist eine spätere Berichterstattung über schulärztliche Untersuchungen und die Bestellung eines Schularztes. Die Schulinstandhaltung sowie später der Schulneubau werden ausführlich berichtet. Die Nachfolger Benekens (Raymund Schneider, Otto Sonnemann *1900, Gerlinde Schreneke) greifen dann mit dem Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg auch kurz politische Ereignisse auf. Bemerkenswert ist die lange Fortsetzung der Chronik, die bis weit in die DDR-Zeit reicht. Hier werden Beziehungen zu Betrieben als Patenbrigaden, Ferienlager, Sport, die Entwicklung der LPG und eine Beteiligung an der Agra (Markleeberg) erwähnt. Namen von Schülerinnen dieser Zeit wurden geschwärzt. Die Chronik endet in den 1970er Jahren. Nach einigen freien Seiten wird davon abgesetzt das 25jährige Schuljubiläum im Jahr 1987 aufgeführt. The school chronicle of Uetz deals with the family of the von der Schulenburgs, who were the church patrons in Cobbel and Uetz for many years. Since the chronicler Karl Beneke was also the sexton, cantor and schoolmaster, he also deals with some church and religious matters. Beneke's predecessors are mentioned briefly before he writes about the actual school affairs. Each year he discusses the number of pupils, the staff and diseases such as scarlet fever, diphtheria, influenza and measles. A special feature of this chronicle is a later report on school medical examinations and the appointment of a school doctor. The maintenance of the school and later the construction of a new school are reported in detail. Beneken's successors (Raymund Schneider, Otto Sonnemann, Gerlinde Schreneke) then briefly address political events such as the First and Second World Wars. Remarkable is the long continuation of the chronicle, which reaches far into the GDR era. Here, relations with companies as sponsor brigades, holiday camps, sports, the development of the LPG and a participation in the Agra (Markleeberg) are mentioned. Names of schoolgirls from this period have been blacked out. The chronicle ends in the 1970s. After a few blank pages, the 25th anniversary of the school in 1987 is listed. The list of persons present at this celebration has been blacked out. However, a handwritten note lists the "roles" of the invited guests.

On Feb. 2, 1899, I was called to see a two-year-old child who had been ill for four days, without medical attention, and found I had to deal with a grave case of scarlet fever. The temperature was 105 F.; there was a severe angina with the characteristic exudate in the pharynx, on the tonsils and soft palate, and the cervical glands were moderately enlarged. The subsequent course of the disease was severe. The pharyngeal exudate extended into the posterior nares and, finally, into the middle ear, with perforation of both tympani; accompanied by a profuse purulent discharge from the external auditory canals and from the nose. The rectal temperature was alone taken, and ranged from 104 to 105, and, Feb. 15, rose as high as 106.5. In previous articles, 1 I have described gram-positive diplococci, isolated in anaerobic cultures from the blood of measles and rubella patients. The measles diplococcus is small and round; the rubella diplococcus is larger, elongated, with pointed ends and a capsule. Diplococci similar to those isolated from the blood were also cultivated from the throat, nose, eye and ear of measles patients, and from the throat of rubella patients. Examination of smears made early in these diseases from the tonsils and anterior pillars of the fauces has been found to show large numbers of diplococci corresponding morphologically to those found in the cultures. The patient was a healthy young man, aged 18. He awoke in the morning with a severe sore throat. He used hydrogen peroxid as a gargle and went to work as usual. In the evening his throat was not much better, so he used the peroxid gargle again. The next morning I was summoned and found him with a temperature of 106 F. and a very severe membranous angina. Owing to the presence of scarlet fever in the near neighborhood, I made a provisional diagnosis of scarlet fever, but took a culture for diphtheria nevertheless. Some four years ago, at the meeting of this Congress in the City of Mexico, I had the honor of addressing you upon the subject of "International Responsibility with Regard to Epidemic Diseases." Quite in line with the thoughts then expressed, I have chosen for my subject to-night "Sanitation and Progress," and it will be my effort to show the interdependence of municipal, national, and international effort in the great undertaking of the elimination of contagious disease, and that the twentieth century should witness this achievement. The only notable thing in this case is the age of the patient. She was born March 8, 1900, so that she was 8 months old at the time of contracting the fever. When I began taking her temperature, regularly, I found it ranging between 102.5 and 103 in the mornings, and 103.5 and 104 in the afternoons. I was attending an older brother who had scarlet fever, and the mother called my attention to the baby, saying that she had had considerable fever of nights for over a week. On examination, I found rose spots on the trunk, and a dry, brown tongue. Although the clinical picture was so plain, I was skeptical, and asked Dr. J. N. Hall to see the patient with me. There are many features of resemblance between simple herpes and herpes zoster, but there are also strong points of dissimilarity. In extreme cases of herpes, particularly about the face, it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the zoster and simple forms. The clusters of firm vesicles on an erythematous base are identical in both. Histologically, the lesions in the skin and those in the affected nerve structures are practically the same in the two varieties. Thus far simple herpes might almost be regarded as a circumscribed abortive zoster; but there are other differentiating clinical features. The most important is the tendency to recurrence in simple herpes, contrasted with such a rarity of second attacks in herpes zoster as almost to suggest an immunity conferred. As a great majority of my cases of sickness in children have been of malarial origin, I will at least make an attempt to give some of my ideas, or rather mode of treatment, of such diseases. Certain families are more susceptible to scarlet fever than others. Physicians in active practice in contagious hospitals and elsewhere are familiar with this fact, because all the children in some families have the disease, whereas the rule is for but one or two of a number of brothers and sisters exposed to have scarlet fever. Besides this, physicians know that certain types of children—fat, flabby, overnourished and pasty children—bear the disease badly, and this gives rise to the knowledge that there is a variation in individual susceptibility. Could these differences in family and individual susceptibilities account for differences in fatality between different small epidemics of scarlet fever? Owing to its reliability, the Schick test has found a constantly increasing field of application. In the Research Laboratory of the New York City Department of Health it has given us the greatest possible help in connection with work carried on at the Willard Parker Hospital during the past eighteen months. We 1 have tested 1,300 scarlet fever cases and have found 700 which gave a negative reaction. Not one of the negatively reacting patients developed clinical diphtheria, although they had received no immunizing injections of antitoxin and were constantly exposed in the wards to cases of diphtheria, and a certain proportion of them had become carriers of virulent diphtheria bacilli. We therefore feel confident that a negative reaction means immunity, while a positive reaction indicates a probable susceptibility to diphtheria. D. S., a girl, aged 6 years and 10 months, gave no history of illness, except that she had scarlet fever in 1921. She is said to have complained of occasional pain in the abdomen, but it was not thought serious, and she appeared normal. July 9, 1922, she accidentally fell over a small rocking chair, and soon developed severe pain in the umbilical and left abdominal regions. July 30, examination revealed general abdominal rigidity and tension, tenderness over the appendix and a distinct tumor in the left abdomen. The temperature was 101. The bowels were obstinately constipated. July 31, the general condition was worse; pain had increased and vomiting had occurred. The patient was removed to a hospital for further observation and probable operation. The blood count revealed 23,350 leukocytes. The patient was prepared for operation, which was performed, July 31. Scarlet fever made its appearance in Valparaiso, Ind., September, 1908, and continued until June, 1911. It is estimated that during this time there were 400 cases, of which only 255 were reported to the city board of health, 145 were not reported and most of them were not subjected to quarantine regulations. Beginning in February, 1911, a special study of the epidemic was begun to determine, if possible, what steps were necessary to terminate this epidemic. The question whether the infection was being spread through the medium of books was considered. If books were carriers of scarlet fever infection, the opportunity for the spread of the disease in this city by them was very great, as Valparaiso is a residence and school city with about 10,000 population. Summary The chief conclusions to be drawn from this investigation are:— o 1. The alleged return cases include some coincidences as well as true cases, but the proportion of the former is small. Among scarlet fever outbreaks arising after the discharge of scarlet fever cases, the proportion is probably less than 10 per cent. Among diphtheria outbreaks following diphtheria, and in outbreaks where the diseases are different, the proportion is probably higher than in the former group. 2. The convalescent hospitals discharge fewer scarlet fever infecting cases in proportion than the acute hospitals. 3. Classification in scarlet fever has not yet caused any notable reduction in the infectivity rate. 4. In diphtheria cases the adoption of routine bacteriological examination before discharge has not caused any reduction in the infectivity rate. 5. The connection between a high infectivity rate and the weather is not close enough to permit of any notable reduction of return cases by withholding the discharge of patients on bad days. 6. In regard to Group C—diphtheria following discharge of a scarlet fever case—it has been suggested that a routine examination of scarlet fever patients for diphtheria bacilli before discharge would abolish such outbreaks. In the light of the very inconclusive results obtained hitherto by bacteriology in reducing return diphtheria cases, I cannot recommend its adoption for scarlet fever. These conclusions as a whole are disappointing. Had a positive result been obtained in each of the above lines of enquiry, we might have hoped to adopt measures to seriously reduce the percentage of infecting cases discharged. The lower proportion at the convalescent hospitals is undoubted; and past experience leads to the hope that return cases might be reduced to about two-thirds or less of the present number by discharging all cases from the convalescent hospitals. The experience of the three years does not lead to any similar hope as regards further classification or bacteriological examination. It is true that classification has hardly had a fair trial, and other systems, or a further trial of those already in use, may give better results.

About two years ago Dr. Weaver and I 1 showed that the blood serum from patients with scarlet fever has no streptococcidal power during life in any stage of the disease. Through the researches of Lemoine, Slawyk, Hektoen and others we know that streptococci occasionally are found circulating in the blood of these patients and that the patients in whose blood cocci are found often make an uneventful recovery. Jochmann, 2 however, is of the opinion that the prognosis is very bad when streptococci are found in the blood. What is true of scarlet fever may equally well be said of tonsillitis. Here, too, streptococci may invade the blood stream, but, in spite of this fact, the patient may make a rapid and satisfactory recovery. 3 In erysipelas and in many wound and puerperal infections the tissues are invaded by virulent streptococci, but in a great majority of these cases

History. A boy, aged 12, had an ordinary case of scarlet fever with only a moderately high temperature and well-defined rash; was out of bed on the tenth day, feeling well and showing no signs of any complications. Urinalysis, made on the fifteenth day, showed no trace of albumin or sugar; specific gravity of 1023. Twenty days after the onset of the fever the boy was taken with severe vomiting; twelve hours later he had a hard convulsion, and passed a small amount of bloody urine heavily loaded with albumin. The boy was put in hot packs with hot linseed poultices over the kidneys, pilocarpin and digitalin given hypodermatically. This treatment was followed four successive days with no apparent benefit.
