Abstract

International audience; In this paper we demonstrate the effectiveness of an active optical detuning circuit for magnetic resonance imaging endoluminal receiver coil. Three endoluminal coils prototypes were built: a coil without any detuning circuit, a coil with a galvanic (classic) detuning circuit using a PIN diode, and a coil with an optical detuning circuit using two photodiodes in parallel with a PIN diode. These coils were built and characterized on a laboratory experimental bench. Then, an in vitro experiment was performed with a 3.0 T MR system to evaluate the impact of the endoluminal receiver coils in detuned phase on the image uniformity distribution measured using the body coil. Next, the endoluminal coil was used as a receiver coil to compare the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) distribution based on iso-contour maps. On experimental bench, the results show an increase delay of the switching times (tuned-detuned or detuned-tuned) for optical-detuned coils of about 10 μs due to the electro-optical circuits, delay still compatible with requirements. When the body coil is used as a transceiver, the SNR uniformity is similar whether the galvanic or the optical detuning circuit is used. Finally, the SNR iso-contours of the different endoluminal coils prototypes are comparable.

Abstract

International audience; In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the real time measurement of electrical field E associated with the radiofrequency (RF) magnetic field B1 is important to quantify the energy absorbed by the tissues and to assess possible safety hazards due to local heating phenomenon. E-field could effectively increase the temperature in the tissues nearby by inducing RF currentsin any implant or metallic cables used for signal transmission and placed inside the transmit body-coil1, 2. For the measurement of the intensities and the distribution of E-field, the adequate probe should be non-magnetic and non-perturbative regarding the E-field and must have a large working frequency range depending on B0. The commonly used probes have either a metallic structure or a large dimension which limits their bandwidth3, 4 and may disturb the electromagnetic field with bias measurements. Others optical probes do not measure directly the Efield 5. In the following, the E-field measurement experiment using a sub-cm electro-optical (EO) probe in a preclinical 4.7-T MR system is presented.

Abstract

International audience; The use of metallic coaxial cables in MRI could induce local high Specific Absorption Rate. Optical fiber link could be an alternative to coaxial cables to ensure patient safety. In order to assure a complete optical endoluminal receiver coil, an optical system for decoupling the receiver coil was made. The MRI for a phantom of ionized water was taken with three endoluminal coils with different decoupling system: classical, optical and without decoupling system. The SNR and the uniformity of signal distribution were studied and compared. The results show that the decoupling system works perfectly and does not induce field inhomogeneity.

Abstract

International audience; Despite the enhanced image provided by multiple-channels array coils, an accurate exploration of bowel diseases and detailed information about the gastrointestinal wall layers are still not available. The use of endoluminal RF coil located in the region of interest could potentially allow good evaluation of tumor invasion or depth of inflammatory processes [1]. However, since metallic coaxial cables are used, patient safety is threatened due to local electric field concentration that can happen and the associated local high Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) [2]. Moreover, in this case, cable isolation and traps cannot be straightforwardly employed due to limited dimension. Signal transmission based onoptical fiber is an alternative to coaxial cables to solve definitively the electromagnetic issues. On a receiver coil, both signal transmission and decoupling have to be insured. For MR signal transmission, the electro-optical conversion has been partially validated based on electro-optic effect of some crystals [3]. In this work, an active optical decoupling circuit for endoluminal coil is presented and compared to a reference coil with regular decoupling using bias signal though coaxial cable.
