Manzano Vargas, Jorge. Chapter Thirteen. Recapitulation. In his thesis, Jorge Manzano set out to understand Bergson on Bergson's own terms. He mined insights by carefully studying the philosopher's works while also listening respectfully to the harsh critiques of his adversaries. He finally succeeded in demonstrating exactly what Bergson asserted and the reasons underlying his theses by unifying the first look-original, understanding-and the Bergsonian critiques of the idea of nothingness. Manzano contends that both paths, the first positive and the second negative, complement one another and get to the heart of the French thinker's whole philosophy. If the term "nihilism" appeals to a kind of intellectual shipwreck where Western man suddenly finds himself, the term "anxiety" evokes the existential facet of that shipwreck. Whatever the word "anxiety" meant before the Romantic period makes little difference now. What is being examined here is a particular way of living and thinking anxiety, an approach that gives the concept a new meaning and role as a concept that intervenes--t might be more precise to say that it barges right in-to the practice of philosophical thinking. Manzano Vargas, Jorge. Chapter twelve: Objections to the critique of the idea of nothingness. Jorge Manzano devoted this chapter of his thesis to analyzing and weighing the critiques aimed at Bergson regarding his critique of the idea of nothingness. Among the authors he reviewed are Jacques Maritain, Gaston Bachelard, François d'Hautefeuille, Blais Romeyer and Emile Rideau. Manzano also looked at the interventions of Jeanne Delhomme, Jean Guitton and Étienne Gilson at the 1959 Bergson Conference that commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Bergson's birth. In his philosophizing Bergson maintains the comprehensive look as a condition of faithfulness to the reality that is apprehended by intuition. In this way, the understanding of inner duration --which Jorge Manzano addresses in the second chapter of his thesis-- calls for seeing it in its unity as a qualitative multiplicity of interpenetrated and organized states of consciousness; this effort up against resistance generated by our obstinacy in measuring time and movement by assimilating them into space, which implies immobilizing them and introducing gaps into their reality, i.e., it implies losing the reality of duration. Manzano, Jorge. First look and criticism of the idea of Nothingness in Bergson. The First Look and the Original Contact. In memory of Dr. Jorge Manzano SJ (September 05,1930-September 21, 2013), founder and director of this journal, we have decided to publish his doctoral thesis in a series of installments. This issue starts with the prologue and chapter I. The author sets out to understand Bergson from Bergson himself, which implies taking part in the first look and diving into his critique of the idea of nothingness. The former is the positive, comprehensive route, but since it is not revealed and proves to be ineffable even for the philosopher himself, it becomes necessary to take a roundabout way and participate through the mediating image (if there even is one, adds Manzano) that draws directly on the original intuition; the latter, a counterpart to the former, is also the confirmation of presences and never absences in all encounters with what is real, but by way of a negative route. These two routes constitute the primordial source of all bergsonian affirmations and metaphors: they unify, penetrate, clarify and explain all of his thinking. It would seem to be a daunting challenge, but Jorge Manzano believes that the task is possible, not to mention promising and unavoidable if one wishes to understand and explain the philosophy of this French thinker in its truth before judging it, something that many of his critics and followers have not bothered to do. Sevilla, Héctor.The perpendicularity between the aristotelian proton kinoun and the concepts of divinity and absolute Nothingness. This essay addresses the specific perpendicularity of Aristotle's concept of proton kinoun and that of Absolute Nothingness. To this end, it looks at the problem of substance in the philosophy proposed in Metaphysics, along with the solution offered by Stagira's most famous son in response to the dilemma of non-being. It also analyzes the goodness that Aristotle posited in the ultimate end and the impossibility of linking current conceptions of divinity with the explanation of the finalism of the mutable. Finally, it offers a proposal in the conclusion: a conception of Nothingness that opens up a particular space in the hermeneutic development of contemporary thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
