Purpose: We sought to automate R.E.N.A.L. (for radius, exophytic/endophytic, nearness of tumor to collecting system, anterior/posterior, location relative to polar line) nephrometry scoring of preoperative computerized tomography scans and create an artificial intelligence-generated score (AI-score). Subsequently, we aimed to evaluate its ability to predict meaningful oncologic and perioperative outcomes as compared to expert human-generated nephrometry scores (H-scores). Materials and Methods: A total of 300 patients with preoperative computerized tomography were identified from a cohort of 544 consecutive patients undergoing surgical extirpation for suspected renal cancer at a single institution. A deep neural network approach was used to automatically segment kidneys and tumors, and geometric algorithms were developed to estimate components of R.E.N.A.L. nephrometry score. Tumors were independently scored by medical personnel blinded to AI-scores. AI- and H-score agreement was assessed using Lin's concordance correlation and their predictive abilities for both oncologic and perioperative outcomes were assessed using areas under the curve. Results: Median age was 60 years (IQE 51e68), and 40% were female. Median tumor size was 4.2 cm and 91.3% had malignant tumors, including 27%, 37% and 24% with high stage, grade and necrosis, respectively. There was significant agreement between H-scores and AI-scores (Lin's -0.59). Both AI- and Hscores similarly predicted meaningful oncologic outcomes (p <0.001) including presence of malignancy, necrosis, and high-grade and -stage disease (p <0.003). They also predicted surgical approach (p <0.004) and specific perioperative outcomes (p <0.05). Conclusions: Fully automated AI-generated R.E.N.A.L. scores are comparable to human-generated R.E.N.A.L. scores and predict a wide variety of meaningful patient-centered outcomes. Purpose Acute kidney injury often leads to chronic kidney disease in the general population. The long-term functional impact of acute kidney injury observed after partial nephrectomy has not been adequately studied. Materials and Methods From 2004 to 2014 necessary studies for analysis were available for 90 solitary kidneys managed by partial nephrectomy. Functional data at 4 time points included preoperative serum creatinine, peak postoperative serum creatinine, new baseline serum creatinine 3 to 12 months postoperatively and long-term followup serum creatinine more than 12 months postoperatively. Adjusted acute kidney injury was defined by the ratio, observed peak postoperative serum creatinine/projected postoperative serum creatinine adjusted for parenchymal mass loss to reveal the true effect of ischemia. The long-term change in renal function (the long-term functional change ratio) was defined as the most recent glomerular filtration rate/the new baseline glomerular filtration rate. The relationship between the grade of the adjusted acute kidney injury and the long-term functional change was assessed by Spearman correlation analysis and multivariable regression. Results Median patient age was 64 years and median followup was 45 months. Median parenchymal mass preservation was 80%. Adjusted acute kidney injury occurred in 42% of patients, including grade 1 injury in 20 (22%) and grade 2/3 in 18 (20%). On univariable analysis the degree of the adjusted acute kidney injury did not correlate with the long-term glomerular filtration rate change (p = 0.55). On multivariable analysis adjusted acute kidney injury was not associated with a long-term functional change (p >0.05) while diabetes and warm ischemia were modestly associated with a long-term functional decline (each p <0.05). Conclusions Acute kidney injury after partial nephrectomy was not a significant or independent predictor of long-term functional decline in our institutional cohort. A prospective study with larger sample sizes and longer followup is required to evaluate factors associated with long-term nephron stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose Uric acid nephrolithiasis is associated with an elevated visceral fat area in kidney stone formers. Hepatic steatosis has also been linked to visceral obesity and nephrolithiasis. We evaluated the association of noncontrast computerized tomography based diagnosis of visceral obesity and hepatic steatosis with 24-hour urine parameters and stone composition in kidney stone formers. Materials and Methods A total of 98 kidney stone formers were included in study who had computerized tomography imaging and 24-hour urine studies available. For each patient a single computerized tomography axial area measurement was obtained of the visceral fat area. Hepatic steatosis was diagnosed by comparing the HU of regions from the liver and spleen. Univariate analysis was performed to compare patients with or without an elevated visceral fat area and hepatic steatosis. Multivariate linear and logistic regression was done to assess for variables associated with 24-hour urine parameters and stone composition. Results An elevated visceral fat area was associated with higher 24-hour urine sodium (175 vs 157 mg per day, p <0.036) and lower 24-hour urine pH (5.724 vs 6.478, <0.0001). Urine pH less than 6 (OR 2.52) was associated with hepatic steatosis. Low urine pH less than 6 (OR 11.1, p = 0.004) and stone volume greater than 65 mm 3 (OR 5.12, p = 0.023) were associated with an elevated visceral fat area. Low urine pH less than 6 (OR 5.87) and visceral fat area greater than 48% (OR 5.33) were associated with uric acid stones. Linear regression demonstrated that the percent of visceral fat area was associated with lower 24-hour urine pH (β-coefficient –0.438, p <0.0001). Conclusions Noncontrast computerized tomography based diagnosis of visceral obesity is associated with low urine pH, high urinary sodium and uric acid stone formation. Purpose Parenchymal mass loss is the predominant factor associated with functional outcomes after partial nephrectomy. It is primarily due to excised and/or devascularized parenchymal mass. We evaluated the importance of excised and devascularized parenchymal mass relative to functional recovery after partial nephrectomy. Materials and Methods In 168 patients who underwent partial nephrectomy the necessary studies were done to determine excised and devascularized parenchymal mass, and evaluate parenchymal mass changes and functional loss of the operated kidney. Parenchymal mass loss in the ipsilateral kidney was measured on contrast enhanced computerized tomography less than 2 months before and 3 to 12 months after partial nephrectomy. Excised parenchymal mass was estimated by subtracting tumor volume from specimen volume. Devascularized parenchymal mass was defined as total parenchymal mass loss minus excised parenchymal mass. We used the Pearson correlation to evaluate relationships between glomerular filtration rate preservation and parenchymal mass loss. Multivariable analysis was done to assess factors associated with devascularized parenchymal mass. Results Median tumor size was 3.4 cm and median R.E.N.A.L. (radius, exophytic/endophytic tumor properties, nearness of tumor to collecting system or sinus, anterior/posterior and location relative to polar lines) score was 7. Warm and cold ischemia was used in 100 and 68 patients, respectively. Median excised parenchymal and devascularized parenchymal mass was 9 and 16 cm 3 , respectively (p <0.001). Total parenchymal mass loss and devascularized parenchymal mass were associated strongly with glomerular filtration rate preservation in the operated kidney (each r ≥0.55, p <0.001). However, excised parenchymal mass was only weakly associated with functional outcomes (r = 0.23). The preoperative glomerular filtration rate and endophytic status were associated with devascularized parenchymal mass on multivariable analysis. Conclusions To our knowledge we report the first study to specifically evaluate the relative contributions of devascularized and excised parenchymal mass to functional recovery after partial nephrectomy. Our study suggests that devascularized parenchymal mass has more impact, which may have implications regarding surgical technique. Purpose With the incidence of renal cell carcinoma on the rise treatment options for the small renal mass have broadened. Cryoablation is increasingly used as a therapeutic option for renal tumors in select cases. However, studies with long-term oncologic outcomes are sparse. We evaluated the long-term oncologic outcomes of laparoscopic renal mass cryoablation. Materials and Methods We reviewed our laparoscopic cryoablation database for patients treated with laparoscopic cryoablation from October 1997 to February 2005. Patients with less than 3 months of followup were excluded from study. Patient and tumor characteristics, and perioperative outcomes, including complications, were recorded. Recurrence-free, cancer specific and overall survival was analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves. Results A total of 142 tumors in 138 consecutive patients were treated with laparoscopic cryoablation. Mean age of the cohort was 66.35 years. Of the patients 99 (71.7%) were male and 39 (28.3%) were female. Mean body mass index was 29.15 kg/m 2 and median ASA® score was 3. A solitary kidney was present in 23 patients (16.2%). Mean tumor size on cross-sectional imaging was 2.4 cm. The mean preoperative and postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate was 66.72 and 61.00 ml per minute, respectively. The postoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate was determined at a mean ± SD of 15.17 ± 10.99 months of followup. The median R.E.N.A.L. nephrometry score was 5. Of the 142 tumors 100 were diagnosed as renal cell carcinoma after histopathological examination of the biopsy specimen. At 3, 5 and 10 years in patients diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma estimated recurrence-free survival was 91.4%, 86.5% and 86.5%, estimated cancer specific survival was 96.8%, 96.8% and 92.6%, and estimated overall survival was 88.7%, 79.1% and 53.8%, respectively. Mean followup was 98.8 ± 54.2 months in those diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma. Mean time to recurrence was 2.3 years. The latest experienced recurrence was 4.4 years after laparoscopic cryoablation. There was a postoperative complication rate of 10.6% with a total of 15 complications. Conclusions Laparoscopic cryoablation achieves good long-term oncologic outcomes for localized small renal masses. It can safely be used in patients who cannot undergo or are unwilling to accept the risks of partial nephrectomy. Purpose Partial nephrectomy is the reference standard for the management of small renal tumors and is commonly used for localized kidney cancer. A primary goal of partial nephrectomy is to preserve as much renal function as possible. New baseline glomerular filtration rate after partial nephrectomy can have prognostic significance with respect to long-term outcomes. Recent studies provide an increased understanding of the factors that determine functional outcomes after partial nephrectomy as well as preventive measures to minimize functional decline . We review these advances, highlight ongoing controversies and stimulate further research . Materials and Methods A comprehensive literature review consistent with the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) criteria was performed from January 2006 to April 2014 using PubMed®, Cochrane and Ovid Medline. Key words included partial nephrectomy, renal function, warm ischemia, hypothermia, nephron mass, parenchymal volume, surgical approaches to partial nephrectomy, preoperative and intraoperative imaging, enucleation, hemostatic agents and energy based resection. Relevant reviews were also examined as well as their cited references. An additional Google Scholar search was conducted to broaden the scope of the review. Only English language articles were included in the analysis. The primary outcomes of interest were the new baseline level of function after early postoperative recovery, percent decline in function, potential etiologies and preventive measures. Results Decline in function after partial nephrectomy averages approximately 20% in the operated kidney, and can be due to incomplete recovery from the ischemic insult or loss of nephron mass related to parenchymal excision or collateral damage during reconstruction. Compensatory hypertrophy in the contralateral kidney after partial nephrectomy in adults is marginal and decline in global renal function for patients with 2 kidneys averages about 10%, although there is some variance based on tumor size and location. Irreversible ischemic injury can be minimized by pharmacological intervention or surgical approaches such as hypothermia, limited warm ischemia, or zero or segmental ischemia. Excessive loss of nephron mass can be minimized by improved preoperative or intraoperative imaging, use of a bloodless field, enucleation and vascular microdissection. Hemostatic agents or energy based resection that minimizes the need for parenchymal and capsular suturing can also optimize preservation of the vascularized nephron mass. Conclusions Our understanding of the decline in renal function after partial nephrectomy has advanced considerably, including better appreciation of its magnitude and impact in various settings, possible etiologies and potential preventive measures. Purpose We assessed compensatory hypertrophy in the contralateral kidney after partial and radical nephrectomy in adults. We also examined predictive factors to facilitate more accurate estimation of global renal function after surgery. Materials and Methods We analyzed the records of 172 patients who underwent partial or radical nephrectomy with appropriate studies to determine function and parenchymal mass specifically in the operated and contralateral kidneys. All patients required renal scans to provide split renal function preoperatively and postoperatively. Parenchymal volume was measured by computerized tomography. All studies were done less than 2 months preoperatively and 4 to 12 months postoperatively. Results A total of 113 and 59 patients underwent partial and radical nephrectomy, and median tumor size was 3.5 and 7.0 cm, respectively (p <0.0001). Of patients treated with partial nephrectomy 19% had high complexity tumor compared to 80% of those treated with radical nephrectomy (p <0.0001). Median ipsilateral parenchymal volume was reduced 18% after partial nephrectomy and the median glomerular filtration rate in this kidney decreased 24.4%. The median contralateral kidney function increase after partial nephrectomy was 2.3% vs 21.1% after radical nephrectomy (p <0.0001). Median global function decreased 9.6% after partial nephrectomy vs 32.2% after radical nephrectomy (p <0.0001). A larger percent parenchymal volume loss (p = 0.0001) and fewer comorbidities (p = 0.0072) significantly correlated with greater compensatory hypertrophy in the contralateral kidney on multivariable analysis. Conclusions Compensatory hypertrophy in adults was limited after partial nephrectomy and it correlated significantly with the amount of parenchymal volume excised. Purpose Poorly functioning kidneys may not recover from ischemia as well as strongly functioning kidneys. This could impact surgical approaches to partial nephrectomy. Materials and Methods We analyzed the records of 155 consecutive patients treated with partial nephrectomy who underwent appropriate studies to facilitate analysis of function and parenchymal mass in the operated kidney, including computerized tomography and glomerular filtration rate measurement within 2 months preoperatively and 4 to 12 months postoperatively. Patients with a contralateral kidney also underwent renal scan in the same time frame to provide split renal function. Computerized tomography was done to measure functional parenchymal volume before and after partial nephrectomy. Recovery from ischemia, defined as percent glomerular filtration rate saved/percent volume saved, was considered 100% if all nephrons recovered from the ischemic insult. Results The median R.E.N.A.L. nephrotomy score was 8. Cold ischemia was used in 64 patients and limited warm ischemia was used in 91 (median 27 and 20 minutes, respectively). The median percent glomerular filtration rate saved in the operated kidney was 80% and the median parenchymal volume saved was 83%. The overall median rate of recovery from ischemia was 95%, including 100% for cold ischemia and 92% for limited warm ischemia. Recovery from ischemia was approximately 100% and was similar for all strata of preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rates in the operated kidney (p = 0.24), even in the warm ischemia subgroup. Conclusions Our results suggest that the quantity of parenchyma preserved is the main determinant of the postoperative glomerular filtration rate after partial nephrectomy as long as limited warm ischemia or hypothermia is used. Purpose: The precision of excision and reconstruction to optimize vascularized parenchymal preservation is a major determinant of renal function after partial nephrectomy. We assessed partial nephrectomy surgical precision using volumetric computerized tomography and analyzed predictive factors. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the records of 122 patients treated with partial nephrectomy in whom detailed analysis of the precision of excision and reconstruction specific to the operated kidney could be performed. We used volumetric computerized tomography to measure functional parenchymal volume before and after partial nephrectomy in the operated kidney. The glomerular filtration rate in the operated kidney was determined by the MDRD2 (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease 2) equation along with renal scan in patients with a contralateral kidney. Surgical precision was defined as actual postoperative parenchymal volume/predicted postoperative parenchymal volume, presuming loss of a 5 mm rim of normal parenchyma related to excision and reconstruction. Results: Median patient age was 61 years and 64 patients (52%) underwent an open procedure. Cold ischemia was used in 50 patients (median 26 minutes) and limited warm ischemia (median 20 minutes) was used in 72. The R.E.N.A.L. (radius, exophytic/endophytic, nearness of tumor to collecting system or sinus, anterior/posterior and location relative to polar line) nephrometry score indicated low, intermediate and high complexity in 43 (35%), 55 (45%) and 24 patients (20%), respectively. A total of 45 patients (37%) with a solitary kidney were included in analysis. The median precision of excision and reconstruction was 93%. The median preserved glomerular filtration rate was 80% in the operated kidney. A solitary kidney was the only significant predictor of excision and reconstruction precision on univariable and multivariable analysis. Conclusions: A solitary kidney significantly impacted partial nephrectomy surgical precision. This was likely related to the recognized need to preserve as much renal parenchyma as possible to optimize renal function in the absence of a contralateral kidney. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose: We evaluated the oncological and functional outcomes of computerized tomography guided percutaneous cryotherapy or radio frequency ablation of kidney tumors in patients with a solitary kidney. Materials and Methods: We reviewed the medical charts of patients with a solitary kidney who underwent percutaneous probe ablation for renal masses at our institution from April 2002 through March 2010. Followup consisted of computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging 1 day postoperatively, at 3, 6 and 12 months, and annually thereafter. Serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate were used to measure renal function. The cryotherapy and radio frequency ablation groups were compared for demographics, the 2-year actuarial survival rate and renal function. Results: Overall 65 patients were included in this retrospective analysis, of whom 29 (44.6%) underwent cryotherapy and 36 (55.4%) underwent radio frequency ablation. Median followup was 15.1 (IQR 4.4 to 32.9) and 38.8 months (13.8 to 50.7), respectively. The 2 groups were comparable in median age, body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiologists score, tumor size and preoperative estimated glomerular filtration rate. The 3 primary treatment failures, including 1 after cryotherapy and 2 after radio frequency ablation, were successfully re-treated with thermal ablation. There were 14 recurrences after radio frequency ablation and 3 after cryotherapy. Two-year actuarial overall, cancer specific, recurrence-free and metastasis-free survival rates for cryotherapy vs radio frequency ablation were 89% vs 93%, 100% vs 96%, 69% vs 58% and 86% vs 91%, respectively. For each group no significant decrease in renal functional parameters was found at the latest followup visit. Conclusions: Computerized tomography guided percutaneous probe ablation represents a safe treatment option in surgical patients at high risk with a solitary kidney. Purpose: We present 5 to 11-year (median 8) oncological outcomes after laparoscopic renal cryoablation. Materials and Methods: Between September 1997 and October 2008 we performed renal cryoablation in 340 patients, of whom 80 treated laparoscopically by a single surgeon before October 2003 had a minimum 5-year followup. Followup involved magnetic resonance imaging on postoperative day 1, at 3, 6 and 12 months, and annually thereafter. Cryolesion biopsy was performed at 6 months. All data were prospectively accrued. Results: In the 80 patients with minimum 5-year followup mean age was 66 years, mean tumor size was 2.3 cm (range 0.9 to 5.0), median American Society of Anesthesiologists score was 3 and mean body mass index was 28 kg/m2. Five patients had local recurrence, 2 had locoregional recurrence with metastasis and 4 had distant metastasis without locoregional recurrence. Six patients died of cancer. In the 55 patients with biopsy proven renal cell cancer at a median followup of 93 months (range 60 to 132) 5-year overall, disease specific and disease-free survival rates were 84%, 92% and 81%, and 10-year rates were 51%, 83% and 78%, respectively. On multivariate analysis previous radical nephrectomy for RCC was the only significant predictor of disease-free and disease specific survival (p = 0.023 and 0.030, respectively). Conclusions: Laparoscopic renal cryoablation is effective oncological treatment for a renal mass in select patients. A disease specific survival rate of 92% at 5 years and 83% at 10 years is possible. Preceding radical nephrectomy for renal cell carcinoma was the only independent factor predicting disease-free and disease specific survival. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose: Percutaneous imaging guided tumor ablation has an increasingly prominent role as minimally invasive treatment for renal tumors. Precise cryoprobe placement is essential for successful ablation. CT-Nav® is a novel stereotactic surgical navigation system with the potential to achieve precise percutaneous cryoprobe placement while decreasing radiation exposure compared to conventional computerized tomography guided procedures. Materials and Methods: We performed a prospective pilot study to evaluate the technical feasibility, safety and accuracy of the system during renal cryoablation. Patients with enhancing renal masses amenable to renal cryoablation underwent preoperative computerized tomography with a preplaced tracking sensor taped to the body. Using a stereroscopic infrared camera the tracking sensor was located 3-dimensionally and a tracking handle was used to guide the cryoprobe percutaneously based on preoperative preloaded computerized tomography. Demographic and perioperative data were added prospectively to an institutional review board approved database. Immediately after cryoprobe placement computerized tomography was repeated to confirm placement accuracy. Results: A total of 13 tumors in 10 patients were successfully cryoablated with the novel navigational system. Mean tumor size was 2.2 cm. Preoperative biopsy revealed renal cell carcinoma in 9 cases. Mean operative time was 155 minutes. No intraoperative or postoperative complications were noted. Mean length of stay was 9.5 hours. Mean targeting registration error was 4.2 mm. Conclusions: Stereotactic percutaneous cryoablation for renal tumors offers the potential for safe, precise needle placement. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose: Angiomyolipomas classically present radiographically as fat containing lesions but some fail to demonstrate fat content. Histologically confirmed angiomyolipomas uniformly follow a benign course but rare epithelioid variants of angiomyolipoma can recur and metastasize. We investigated the clinical, radiographic and histological characteristics of each angiomyolipoma subtype. Materials and Methods: Pertinent data were recorded for 209 patients surgically treated for angiomyolipoma in 219 kidneys from 1981 to 2007. Classic and fat poor angiomyolipomas were classified radiographically based on the presence or absence of fat and classified histologically based on the presence of triphasic, monophasic or epithelioid histology. Results: Median radiographic size was 3.2, 4.9 and 10 cm in patients with a single angiomyolipoma (59% of patients), multiple angiomyolipomas and tuberous sclerosis (probable or definite), respectively. In these 3 groups 65%, 47% and 33% of lesions were not suspected radiographically (fat poor angiomyolipoma). Fat poor angiomyolipomas were more commonly single, smaller and in older patients. Triphasic histology was evident in 76% of angiomyolipomas with 16% demonstrating a predominance of 1 component and 8% containing epithelioid features. Despite potentially aggressive findings in 18% (eg presence within the perinephric fat, lymph node involvement) no angiomyolipoma recurred during a mean followup of 3.4 years (range 0 to 24). A total of 28 (13%) patients with angiomyolipoma had concomitant renal cell carcinoma. Conclusions: A surprisingly high number of resected angiomyolipomas was not suspected radiographically indicating the importance of precise radiographic characterization to minimize nephrectomy for fat poor angiomyolipoma, which should remain a research priority. In this sizeable single institution series no triphasic, monophasic or epithelioid angiomyolipoma recurred despite potentially aggressive findings in a substantial proportion of cases. Purpose: We assessed the correlation between reduced renal function and parenchymal volume following partial nephrectomy. Materials and Methods: In 21 of 42 patients with tumors in a solitary kidney who were enrolled in a study measuring function before and after surgery underwent computerized tomography, and measurement of the glomerular filtration rate and estimated glomerular filtration rate (the latter at baseline and 2 to 6 months) before and after surgery. A segmentation algorithm was used to measure renal parenchymal volume. The percent of renal parenchymal volume loss was correlated with the percent loss in glomerular filtration rate using the Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: Mean ± SD net preoperative volume was 284 ± 67 cc (range 179 to 413) and mean net postoperative volume was 240 ± 61 cc (range 119 to 346) with an absolute functional volume loss of between 5 and 160 cc. The average percent of parenchymal volume loss was 15% (range −2% to 47%). The mean loss of the measured glomerular filtration rate 3 days postoperatively was 33.9% (range −70.7% to 74.4%) and the estimated glomerular filtration rate 2 to 6 months postoperatively was 19.7 % (−6.0% to 45.5%). There was a low degree of correlation between the percent volume loss and the percent measured glomerular filtration rate loss at 3 days (r = 0.28, p = 0.22). However, there was a moderate degree of correlation between the percent volume loss and the percent estimated glomerular filtration rate loss at 2 to 6 months (r = 0.48, p = 0.03). Conclusions: In patients with partial nephrectomy the renal parenchymal volume loss correlates best with the renal function loss several months after surgery. Purpose: Followup after radio frequency ablation and cryotherapy for small renal lesions lacks pathological analysis. The definition of successful tumor ablation has been the absence of contrast enhancement on posttreatment magnetic resonance imaging or computerized tomography. We hypothesized that adding post-ablation kidney biopsy would help confirm treatment success. Materials and Methods: From April 2002 to March 2006 a total of 109 renal lesions in 88 patients were ablated with percutaneous radio frequency ablation and from September 1997 to January 2006 a total of 192 lesions in 176 patients were treated with laparoscopic cryoablation. Patients were followed with radiographic imaging and post-ablation biopsy at 6 months. Results: Radiographic success at 6 months was 85% (62 cases) and 90% (125) for radio frequency ablation and cryoablation, respectively. At 6 months 134 lesions (45%) were biopsied and success in the radio frequency ablation cohort decreased to 64.8% (24 cases), while cryoablation success remained high at 93.8% (91). Six of 13 patients (46.2%) with a 6-month positive biopsy after radio frequency ablation demonstrated no enhancement on posttreatment magnetic resonance imaging or computerized tomography. In patients treated with cryoablation all positive biopsies revealed posttreatment enhancement on imaging just before biopsy. Conclusions: We observed a poor correlation between radiographic imaging and pathological analysis. We recommend post-radio frequency ablation followup biopsy due to the significant risk of residual renal cell cancer without radiographic evidence, although to our knowledge the clinical significance of these viable cells remains to be determined. In contrast, radiographic images of renal lesions treated with cryotherapy appeared to correlate adequately with corresponding histopathological findings in our series. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
