BACKGROUND: Iron deficiency (ID) is considered a common health condition among military personnel, particularly soldiers during a period of high-intensity workouts. The causes, prevention, and treatment of ID anemia (IDA) remain the subject of ongoing and extensive research in various populations. AIM: This is the first research to study the outcome of 14 weeks of intensive physical exercise on the prevalence and factors associated with ID and IDA among Saudi military male trainees. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among n = 101 trainees who completed a questionnaire on sociodemographic data, dietary habits, current or past diagnoses of medical conditions, and physical activity. Two blood samples were collected from each participant to estimate (1) C-reactive protein and iron profile and (2) complete blood counts by the CellDYN Sapphire automated blood cell counter. Hemoglobin (Hb) fractions were identified and quantified by high-performance liquid chromatography using the TOSOH G8 analyzer to exclude hemoglobinopathy and thalassemia. RESULTS: The prevalence of ID, comprising both ID erythropoiesis and IDA among trainees, was found to be 65.3%. The occurrence of IDA was 5%, while ID erythropoiesis was detected among 60.4%. The prevalence of ID was statistically significantly higher among those drinking coffee during military training (P = 0.048). CONCLUSIONS: Further studies are recommended to validate this study’s findings by incorporating a larger sample and extending the duration of the training period and examine the mechanisms that explain the increased risk of ID during vigorous military training.

Essential thrombocythemia (ET) is a malignant hematological disease that has the ability to progress to acute leukemia or transform into other myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). The coexistence of ET and other MPNs with pituitary adenoma (PA) is rare. There are no reports of cases of secretory PA of prolactin hormone in combination with ET. This case was reported in a young woman from Saudi Arabia who had the secretory PA present in combination with ET. The 20-year-old patient was treated for a micro-PA with hyperprolactinemia. The patient was referred to the hematological service for thrombocytosis. There was no history of thrombosis, cardiovascular risk factors, or constitutional symptoms. Laboratory tests showed that platelet levels consistently lagged from 700 × 103/µL to 1000 × 103/µL for 1 year. Hemoglobin 13 g/dL, white blood cells (WBCs) 6 × 103/µL, and normal WBC differential. The peripheral blood smear was inconclusive. A peripheral blood sample was sent for the cytogenetic study of myeloproliferative diseases, which came to be positive for c.1849G>T p.(V617F) mutation in the EXON 14 Janus kinase 2 (JAK2) gene. The patient was diagnosed with a MPN, ET with positive exon 14 JAK2, at low-risk category. Evidence suggests that MPNs in combination with endocrinological diseases are rare. However, there is a high incidence of MPN and unrelated tumors such as PA. Further research is recommended to thoroughly investigate endocrine tumors and look beyond secondary thrombocytosis that leads to thrombocythemia as in ET.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited autosomal recessive disorder with bone mineral density (BMD) as a common clinical manifestation of SCD. With a prevalence of 2.6%, Saudi Arabia is among the highest incidence of SCD worldwide. The purpose of this research was to examine how SCD evolves and how it affects bone density in Saudi patients from an Eastern Province tertiary hospital. METHODS: This was an observational prospective study conducted in the tertiary care hospital among 119 SCD patients. BACKGROUND: Thrombosis and acute respiratory failure are among the leading causes of mortality in COVID-19 patients. The von Willebrand factor (VWF) is one of the main components in the blood coagulation system. It has been hypothesized that the increased VWF level results from vascular damage because VWF is stored in endothelial cells. Infection of endothelial cells with SARS-CoV-2 can stimulate the release of VWF. This study aimed to determine the level of VWF activity among the Saudi population affected by COVID-19 and investigate the correlation between VWF level and D-dimer level. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is an analytical, retrospective, observational study conducted in a single-center tertiary hospital at King Fahad Military Medical Complex (KFMMC). A study sample of 80 hospitalized patients (aged ≥18 years) diagnosed with COVID-19 confirmed by nasopharyngeal SARS-COV was randomly included in this study. Frozen blood samples were used to measure VWF antigen (Ag) level and activity for all patients. Historical data on hemostasis markers such as platelets (PLTS), fibrinogen, and D-dimer were obtained retrospectively, as well as demographic and clinical data. RESULTS: Data of 80 patients were analyzed to assess VWF Ag level and activity in correlation to D-dimer level. The mean age of the patients was 58.3 (standard deviation 16.18), with nearly two-thirds being females (62.6%). The most common comorbidities were arterial hypertension (67.5%), diabetes (56.3%), and dyslipidemia (22.5%). Only 10% of patients were obese. The mean values of were 3.25 for D-dimer, 3.55 for fibrinogen, 226.4 for PLTS, 9.88 for white blood cell, 237.04 for VWF Ag, 253.21 for VWF activity, and 70.45 for C-reactive protein. Pearson's correlation coefficient revealed that the correlation between D-dimer and VWF Ag and D-dimer and VWF activity was statistically insignificant (P > 0.05). Only six patients had overt thrombosis, but this has no significant correlation with VWF Ag, activity, D-dimer, or platelet count. VWF Ag and activity were higher in intensive care unit (ICU) than non-ICU patients. However, it is not significant statistically. VWF Ag and activity were significantly higher in deceased patients than in survivors. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study showed that there was no significant correlation between VWF Ag and activity with D-dimer among Saudi patients with confirmed COVID-19.

Background: The numbers of musculoskeletal injuries and related risk factors are high, especially in military representatives, since they perform constant physical activities. One of the most common injuries is the knee injury. Although there are many studies relating to knee injuries in the military personnel, none of them have been conducted to estimate the incidence of this injury in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Objectives: This study aimed to explore the incidence of knee injuries and risk factors among the military personnel on active duty in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: This study included n = 2230 patients with knee injuries with a mean age 42.73 and standard deviation ± 16.343 from military branches of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) between 2010 and 2016. Data were collected from Saudi military hospitals and statistically analyzed using descriptive statistics and regression models. During the study, no injuries aggravations of existing injuries or conditions were reported. Results: The frequency distribution showed that anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries were the most common of knee injuries (45.2%) followed by meniscus injury (24.9%) and internal derangement (10.1%) with an incidence rate 4.57, 0.25, and 0.10 respectively. Chi-square test revealed that sports are the most significant factor relating to all knee injuries (30.5%), followed by twisting injuries at 25% (P = 000). Conclusion: Future studies are recommended to generate effective measures to reduce the influence of preventable risk factors, such as sports and related physical activities, that contribute to knee injuries.

OBJECTIVES: This study's objectives are to (1) determine the current prevalence of iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and risk factors for female college students at Prince Sultan Military College of Health Sciences (PSMCHS) in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia and (2) address the gap in the current literature. A written survey in both Arabic and English was administrated to 214 female students, and only 201 students completed the survey. It was randomly selected from all registered female students. A number of factors possibly associated with IDA were examined using the Chi-square test. CONTEXT: Globally, iron deficiency is known to be the most common nutritional disorder. About 30% of the world's population are iron deficient (ID). Women seem to be more affected with IDA than men, which constitute an epidemic public health issue. AIMS: The aim of the study was to determine the prevalence of IDA and the risk factors among healthy Saudi undergraduate female college students studying at PSMCHS in Dhahran. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A cross-sectional study on 201 female students (18–25 years) was conducted between January and March 2019. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A questionnaire which contains sociodemographic data was completed by each participant. Two blood samples were collected from each participant to estimate the iron profile and to analyze the complete blood counts. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: The statistical analysis was carried out using the Statistical Packages for the Social Sciences software. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of IDA was 35.3%. The questionnaire analysis of the dietary habit and clinical characteristics revealed that family history of hereditary disease and physical activity have a significant effect on the development of IDA. Statistical analysis showed that having breakfast regularly significantly reduced the development of IDA compared with irregularly having breakfast. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of IDA in this study was moderately high, and our results suggest that further education regarding IDA is highly encouraged. This is the first study that demonstrated the prevalence and risk factors of IDA among undergraduate female college students in PSMCHS, and the data generated will provide a database for further studies.
