Background: Assessment of correlation between peri-implant parameters and C-reactive protein levels among patients with different obesity levels. Materials and Methods: Evaluation of 60 subjects was performed who were scheduled to undergo dental implant therapy for missing mandibular first molars. Three study cohorts were formed, namely, Group A: obese group (BMI between 30 Kg/m2 and 34.9 Kg/m2), Group B: high obese group (BMI over 34.9 Kg/m2), and Group C: non-obese group (BMI under 25 Kg/m2). Each cohort comprised 20 subjects. Dental implant therapy was carried out in all the patients. Peri-implant variables were evaluated in all the patients. Blood samples were obtained, and C-reactive protein levels in subjects having different obesity levels. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results: Mean serum C-reactive protein levels among patients of groups A, B, and C occurred to be 3.28 mg/L, 3.65 g/L, and 3.61 g/L, respectively. On comparing numerically, noticeable outcomes were achieved. Mean probing depth among subjects of groups A, B, and C occurred to be 2.9 mm, 3.2 mm, and 1.3 mm, respectively. Mean marginal bone loss among subjects of groups A, B, and C occurred to be 2.1 mm, 2.7 mm, and 0.8 mm, respectively. On comparing numerically, noteworthy outcomes were gathered. Aim: The present study was undertaken for assessing the C-reactive proteins (CRP) levels and IL-6 levels in patients with peri-implantitis. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 patients with confirmed clinical and radiographic diagnosis of peri-implantitis were included in the present study. Another set of 20 subjects who reported for routine health check-up were included as healthy controls. All the subjects were recalled in the morning and fasting (minimum of 12 h) venous blood samples were obtained. Plain vials were used for collecting the venous blood which was sent to the laboratory for biochemical analysis. In the laboratory, levels of CRP were assessed by means of latex enhanced nephelometric method, and interleukin 6 (IL-6) was assessed by means of Elisa kit. Results: Mean levels of CRPs in patients of the peri-implantitis group and the control group was found to be 0.795 mg/dL and 0.294 mg/dL respectively. Mean IL-6 levels among the patients of the peri-implantitis group and the control group was found to be 12.178 pg/ml and 6.458 pg/ml respectively. While analyzing statistically, significant results were obtained. Conclusion: Enhanced periodontal inflammation in peri-implantitis patients is accompanied by a considerable increase in the concentration of CRPs and IL-6. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Corona virus disease 2019 (Covid-19) has high infectivity and mortality rate. Covid-19 patients can suddenly deteriorate and develop life threatening complications. Hence, there is a need to identify laboratory biomarkers in order to categorize high risk patients. The main purpose of the study is to investigate the role and correlation of laboratory parameters such as total leucocyte count (TLC), absolute lymphocyte count, platelet count, C-Reactive Proteins (CRP), serum ferritin, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), serum procalcitonin and D-dimer in severe and non-severe Covid-19 patients. Methodology: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at Latifa Women and Child Hospital in the UAE after obtaining ethical committee clearance. Based on the symptoms and the criteria by National Institute of Health, USA, 109 patients were divided into three groups: Non-severe with 75, severe with 18 and critical with 16 patients. Laboratory data of these patients were assessed through the electronic medical records (SALAMA). Statistical analysis was done using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25.0 (SPSS/PC; SPSS-25.0, Chicago, USA). Laboratory test profiles were expressed as mean (SD). Independent 't' test and ANOVA were used to study the significance of means. P value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Result: Males were more severely affected than females. Severe and critically ill Covid-19 patients had a significantly higher TLC, serum LDH, ferritin and CRP and lower absolute lymphocyte count. PCT and D-dimer were significantly elevated in critical group. Conclusion: Along with clinical presentation and radiological findings, biochemical parameter may also be considered as important predictors for assessing severity in covid-19 patients. Background: Conventional non-surgical periodontal therapy is carried out in quadrant basis with 1-2 week interval. This time lag may result in re-infection of instrumented pocket and may impair healing. Therefore, a new approach to full-mouth non-surgical therapy to be completed within two consecutive days with full-mouth disinfection has been suggested. In periodontitis, leukocyte counts and levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) are likely to be slightly elevated, indicating the presence of infection or inflammation. The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of one stage and two stage non-surgical therapy on clinical parameters along with CRP levels and total white blood cell (TWBC) count. Materials and Methods: A total of 20 patients were selected and were divided into two groups. Group 1 received one stage full mouth dis-infection and Group 2 received two stages FMD. Plaque index, sulcus bleeding index, probing depth, clinical attachment loss, serum CRP and TWBC count were evaluated for both the groups at baseline and at 1 month post-treatment. Results: The results were analyzed using the Student t-test. Both treatment modalities lead to a significant improvement of the clinical and hematological parameters; however comparison between the two groups showed no significant difference after 1 month. Conclusion: The therapeutic intervention may have a systemic effect on blood count in periodontitis patients. Though one stage FMD had limited benefits over two stages FMD, the therapy can be accomplished in a shorter duration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Periodontal subgingival pathogens affect local and systemic immune responses and initiate an acute phase systemic inflammatory response characterized by the release of C-reactive proteins (CRPs). This study has been carried out to evaluate the serum concentration of CRPs, which can be used as a marker of periodontal disease as well as a risk indicator for cardiovascular diseases. Materials and Methods: In a retrospective study a total number of 45 subjects were selected from the outpatient department of periodontics a mean age of 40 years. Based on the periodontal status, the subjects were divided into 3 groups of 15 subjects each. Group I: Control group [with attachment loss (AL) ≤ 2 mm and pocket depth (PD) < 3 mm], Group II: Generalized aggressive periodontitis (AL ≤ 5 mm), Group III: chronic periodontitis (AL ≥ 2 mm, PD ≥ 5 mm), which includes moderate and severe periodontitis. The clinical parameters recorded were plaque index,gingival index, bleeding index, probing PD, and clinical attachment levels and scoring was done on 6 surfaces of all teeth. For the CRP assessment, blood samples were collected from subjects at the time of clinical examination. Analysis of covariance was used for comparison of mean values between the groups to adjust the ages (P value < 0.05). Results: Overall, the mean CRP levels were high in subjects with generalized aggressive and chronic periodontitis compared with controls. This was found to be statistically significant. A statistically significant difference (P = 0.012) was found in the CRP level between groups I and II and between groups II and III, and between groups I and III. Conclusion: The results of the present study indicated an increase in serum CRP levels in subjects with generalized aggressive periodontitis and chronic periodontitis as compared with the controls. Background: Numerous cross-sectional studies have suggested that chronic periodontitis is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. There is evidence that periodontitis and cardiovascular diseases are linked by inflammatory factors including C-reactive protein. The purpose of the study was to investigate the levels of CRP and PNM cells as a marker of inflammatory host response in the serum of chronic periodontitis patients and in patients with CVD. Materials and Methods: Study population included 75 patients; both male and female above 35 years were included for the study. The patients were divided into three groups of 25 each - Group I: Chronic periodontitis patients with CVD, Group II: Chronic periodontitis patients without CVD and Group III: Control subjects (without chronic periodontitis and CVD). Patients with chronic periodontitis had ≥8 teeth involved with probing depth (PD) ≥5 mm involved. The control group had PD ≤ 3 mm and no CVD. Venous blood was collected from the patients and C-reactive protein levels were analyzed by immunoturbidimetry. PMN was recorded by differential count method. Results: On comparison, OHI-S Index, GI, mean PD, CRP and PMN values showed significant difference from Group I to III. CRP level was highly significant in Group I when compared with Group II and Group III. PMN level was highly significant in Group I when compared with Group III PMN level which was not significant. Conclusion: This study indicated that periodontitis may add the inflammation burden of the individual and may result in increased levels of CVD based on serum CRP levels. Thus, controlled prospective trials with large sample size should be carried out to know the true nature of the relationship if indeed one exists. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
