Introduction: The relative citation ratio (RCR), a novel bibliometric tool supported by the National Institute of Health, provides a standardized approach to evaluate research productivity and impact across different fields. This study aims to evaluate RCR of fellowship-trained foot and ankle orthopaedic surgeons to analyze the influence of various surgeon demographics., Methods: Fellow names listed on the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society website were extracted from the year 2008 to 2009 to the year 2022 to 2023. Demographic information for each fellow was collected including sex, degree type, and academic title. The iCite database developed by the National Institute of Health was used to obtain total publications, mean RCR, weighted RCR, and change in RCR after fellowship graduation for each fellow. Univariate and multivariate analysis was conducted to predict these four parameters based on sex, degree type, academic position, and career longevity., Results: Of the 820 fellows, 674 (82%) were male. Most fellows (n = 587, 71%) did not go on to hold academic positions. Multivariate analysis revealed that male sex (β = 2.32, P < 0.001), holding an academic position (β = 6.44, P < 0.001), holding a PhD (β = 22.96, P < 0.001), and a shorter length time since graduation (β = -0.50, P < 0.001) were independent predictors of number of total publications. Holding a DO degree was an independent predictor of decreased mean RCR (β = 0.39, P = 0.039). Finally, multivariate analysis revealed that male sex (β = 4.05, P = 0.003), a career in academics (β = 4.61, P < 0.001), and a shorter time since graduation (β = -0.45, P = 0.001) were associated with a larger weighted RCR., Discussion: The findings highlight the importance of addressing gender disparities and promoting research opportunities across different programs. Moreover, academic institutions should provide adequate support and mentorship to early-career foot and ankle-trained orthopaedic surgeons to foster sustained research productivity., (Copyright © 2024 The Authors. Lateral ankle sprains and instability are an increasingly identified pain point for patients, accounting for 20 to 25% of musculoskeletal injuries. Lateral ankle injuries are especially concerning given the propensity for patients to develop chronic lateral ankle instability and for the high risk of reinjury on an unstable ankle. With the complex articulation of the tibiofibular syndesmosis, subtalar, and talocrural joints, pinpointing ankle dysfunction remains difficult. Multiple reviews have evaluated management and diagnosis of lateral ankle instability, but with newer treatment options available, a more comprehensive assessment of the current literature was conducted. Although multiple surgical options exist, many nonsurgical functional options have also been developed for patients that may help patients prevent the development of chronic lateral ankle instability. In recent times, many new options have come up, including in-office needle arthroscopy and continual advancements in diagnosis and our understanding of this difficult topic. Multiple reviews have evaluated the management and diagnosis of lateral ankle instability, but with newer treatment options available, a more comprehensive assessment of the current literature was conducted. Introduction: Mentorship is an invaluable facet of medical education. The purpose of this study was to analyze medical student perspectives of mentorship they received and the influence this has on their participation in the field of orthopaedic surgery., Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of medical students interested in pursuing orthopaedic surgery through an 18-question survey distributed through social media and e-mail., Results: Two hundred fifteen students completed this survey, with over 50% of students reporting that they have a mentor in orthopaedic surgery while 34% were actively seeking one. Most students found mentors through research opportunities (25%) and cold e-mails (20%). Common hurdles to mentorship were access (38%) and finding common time (30%). Peer mentorship had a higher mean satisfaction score in all domains, except facilitating matching, and there was a significant difference between groups (e.g., peer mentor versus program director; P < 0.001). Sex, race, and degree type were not significantly related to students' access to or their evaluation of mentors (P > 0.05 for all)., Conclusion: Overall, this study demonstrates that medical students across the nation rely on mentorship to guide them on their path to becoming an orthopaedic surgeon., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Introduction: The purpose of this study was to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on rising fourth-year medical students' plans to apply to residency in orthopaedic surgery., Methods: We conducted a survey of rising fourth-year medical students. Primary outcome was the change in students' plans to apply to residency in orthopaedic surgery as measured by Likert scale response. Secondary outcomes were students' concerns about applying to residency during the pandemic., Results: A total of 462 students were planning to apply to residency in orthopaedic surgery. Women said that they were "less likely" to apply to orthopaedic surgery because of the pandemic (14.9% versus 5.5% of men, P < 0.001). Students identifying as Black/African American said that they were "less likely" to apply (16.9% compared with 8.8 of non-Hispanic White, P < 0.001). Students said that they had "somewhat fewer" or "many fewer" opportunities to get adequate exposure to orthopaedic surgery to make a specialty choice (88.9% of students)., Discussion: We support the development of robust student advising and mentorship networks to address the uncertainty inherent in applying to residency during a global pandemic and curtail the racial and sex disparities discovered in this survey., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors.
