Porous materials are widely employed in a large range of applications, in particular, for storage, separation, and catalysis of fine chemicals. Synthesis, characterization, and pre- and post-synthetic computer simulations are mostly carried out in a piecemeal and ad hoc manner. Whilst high throughput approaches have been used for more than 30 years in the porous material fields, routine integration of experimental and computational processes is only now becoming more established. Herein, important developments are highlighted and emerging challenges for the community identified, including the need to work toward more integrated workflows., (© 2020 The Authors. A chiral, octahedral M 12 L 12 cage, which is charge neutral and contains an internal void of about 2000 Å 3 , is reported. The cage was synthesised as an enantiopure complex by virtue of amino-acid-based dicarboxylate ligands, which assemble around copper paddlewheels at the vertices of the octahedron. The cage persists in solution with retention of the fluorescence properties of the parent acid. The solid-state structure contains large pores both within and between the cages, and displays permanent porosity for the sorption of gases with retention of crystallinity. Hydrogenases (H 2 ases) are benchmark electrocatalysts for H 2 production, both in biology and (photo)catalysis in vitro. We report the tailoring of a p-type Si photocathode for optimal loading and wiring of H 2 ase through the introduction of a hierarchical inverse opal (IO) TiO 2 interlayer. This proton-reducing Si|IO-TiO 2 |H 2 ase photocathode is capable of driving overall water splitting in combination with a photoanode. We demonstrate unassisted (bias-free) water splitting by wiring Si|IO-TiO 2 |H 2 ase to a modified BiVO 4 photoanode in a photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell during several hours of irradiation. Connecting the Si|IO-TiO 2 |H 2 ase to a photosystem II (PSII) photoanode provides proof of concept for an engineered Z-scheme that replaces the non-complementary, natural light absorber photosystem I with a complementary abiotic silicon photocathode., (© 2018 The Authors. This work showcases the 1,3-haloboration reaction of alkynes in which boron and chlorine add to propargyl systems in a proposed sequential oxazoliumborate formation with subsequent ring-opening and chloride migration. In addition, the functionalization of these propargyl esters with dimethyl groups in the propargylic position leads to stark differences in reactivity whereby a formal 1,1-carboboration prevails to give the 2,2-dichloro-3,4-dihydrodioxaborinine products as an intramolecular chelate. Density functional theory calculations are used to rationalize the distinct carboboration and haloboration pathways. The synthesis of metal-organic frameworks with large three-dimensional channels that are permanently porous and chemically stable offers new opportunities in areas such as catalysis and separation. Two linkers (L1=4,4',4'',4'''-([1,1'-biphenyl]-3,3',5,5'-tetrayltetrakis(ethyne-2,1-diyl)) tetrabenzoic acid, L2=4,4',4'',4'''-(pyrene-1,3,6,8-tetrayltetrakis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))tetrabenzoic acid) were used that have equivalent connectivity and dimensions but quite distinct torsional flexibility. With these, a solid solution material, [Zr6 O4 (OH)4 (L1)2.6 (L2)0.4 ]⋅(solvent)x , was formed that has three-dimensional crystalline permanent porosity with a surface area of over 4000 m(2)  g(-1) that persists after immersion in water. Nucleophilic attack of an alkoxide on an alkynyl sulfonamide leads to displacement of the sulfonamide at the sp centre and isolation of the ynol ether in good yield in a single operation. High-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) has been used to image the surface structure of nano- and micrometer-sized synthetic crystals of zeolite-Linde-L (LTL). Columnar holes and rotational, nano-sized, wheel-like defects were observed within the crystals, where the hole has a minimum size equal to that of the rotational defect. Predictions of surface structure from atomistic computer simulation concur with the observations from HREM and provide insight into the crystal growth mechanism of perfect and defective LTL. Analysis of the energetics of the formation of rotational defect structures reveals that the driving force for defect creation is thermodynamic and furthermore, the rotational defects could be created in high concentrations. Formation of a columnar hole is found to be slightly energetically unfavourable and therefore we speculate that the incidence of both rotational and nano-sized vacancy defects is strongly dependent on kinetic factors and reaction conditions. The morphology of nano- and microcrystalline LTL is contradistinct and we use insights from simulation to propose an explanation of the disparity in crystal shape.

We report here on the solvothermal synthesis and crystal structure of the hybrid organic-inorganic framework material Al(2)[O(3)PC(3)H(6)PO(3)](H(2)O)(2)F(2).H(2)O (orthorhombic, Pmmn, a = 12.0591(2) A, b = 19.1647(5) A, c = 4.91142(7) A, Z = 4), the second member of the Al(2)[O(3)PC(n)H(2n)PO(3)](H(2)O)(2)F(2).H(2)O series. The structure consists of corrugated chains of corner-sharing AlO(4)F(2) octahedra in which alternating AlO(4)F(2) octahedra contain two fluorine atoms in a trans or a cis configuration. The diphosphonate groups link the chains together through Al-O-P-O-Al bridges and through the propylene groups to form a three-dimensional framework structure containing a one-dimensional channel system. The linkage of the corrugated inorganic Al-O-P layers within the structure results in the formation of two types of channel that differ in size, shape and composition. The smaller channel is unoccupied; the larger channel is more elongated and contains two extra-framework water molecules per unit cell. A computational investigation into the driving force that controls the stacking arrangement of the Al-O-P inorganic layers within this series of compounds reveals that the stacking is found to be controlled by thermodynamic factors, arising chiefly from the conformation of the organic linker molecule used to connect the inorganic sheets. It is found that the registration of the inorganic layers can be engineered by selecting an appropriate, simple organic spacer or linker alkyl chain, where an even number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain directs formation of aligned, stacked, inorganic sheets (AAAAAA), and an odd number directs formation of unaligned, stacked sheets (ABABAB) and the formation of one or two channel types in the resultant structure, respectively. This combination of alkyl-chain linkers in conjunction with corrugated inorganic layers is an effective tool to rationally design the pore system of hybrid framework materials.
