In the chemical industry, formaldehyde is an important bulk chemical. The traditional synthesis of formaldehyde involves an energy intensive oxidation of methanol over a metal oxide catalyst. The selective electrochemical oxidation of methanol is challenging. Herein, we report a catalytic system with an immobilized TEMPO electrode that selectively oxidizes methanol to formaldehyde with high turnover numbers. Upon the addition of various organic and inorganic bases, the activity of the catalyst could be tuned. The highest Faradaic efficiency that was achieved was 97.5 %, the highest turnover number was 17100. Additionally, we found that the rate determining step changed from the step in which the carbonyl specie is created from the methanol-TEMPO adduct to the oxidative regeneration of the TEMPO + species. The challenge of moving to a carbon-free energy economy is highlighted in the context of technology and materials restrictions. Many technologies needed for the so-called energy transition depend on critical metals such as platinum, lithium, iridium and cobalt. Here we focus on solid borohydride salts as hydrogen carriers, studying catalysts for hydrogen release. We combine metal 3D printing technology and a Raney-type leaching process to make structured macroscopic catalyst/reactor monoliths of cobalt, aluminium and stainless steel with well-defined micropores. Remarkably, the blank catalyst samples, which are made only from aluminium and stainless steel (Al-SS), show high activity and, importantly, high stability in borohydride hydrolysis, with no mass loss and no surface poisoning. The batch results are confirmed in a continuous setup running for 96 h. Catalyst performance is attributed to the stable porous structure, the mechanical stability of the stainless steel macrostructure, and the presence of accessible Al(OH)x sites. This research shows a clear contribution to sustainability based on multi-factor comparison: The Al-SS catalyst outperforms the state-of-the-art on mechanical and chemical durability, it is both PGM-free and CRM-free, and its preparation follows a simple, scalable and low-waste procedure., (© 2024 The Authors. Controlling the coordination sphere of heterogeneous single-metal-site catalysts is a powerful strategy for fine-tuning their catalytic properties but is fairly difficult to achieve. To address this problem, we immobilized supramolecular cages where the primary- and secondary coordination sphere are controlled by ligand design. The kinetics of these catalysts were studied in a model reaction, the hydrolysis of ammonia borane, over a temperature range using fast and precise online measurements generating high-precision Arrhenius plots. The results show how catalytic properties can be enhanced by placing a well-defined reaction pocket around the active site. Our fine-tuning yielded a catalyst with such performance that the reaction kinetics are diffusion-controlled rather than chemically controlled., (© 2023 The Authors. Immobilizing molecular catalysts on electrodes is vital for electrochemical applications. However, creating robust electrode-catalyst interactions while maintaining good catalytic performance and rapid electron transfer is challenging. Here, without introducing any foreign elements, we show a bottom-up synthetic approach of constructing the conjugated C-C bond between the commercial Vulcan carbon electrode and an organometallic catalyst. Characterization results from FTIR, XPS, aberration-corrected TEM and EPR confirmed the successful and uniform heterogenization of the complex. The synthesized Vulcan-LN 4 -Co catalyst is highly active and selective in the oxygen reduction reaction in neutral media, showing an 80 % hydrogen peroxide selectivity and a 0.72 V (vs. RHE) onset potential which significantly outperformed the homogenous counterpart. Based on single-crystal XRD and NMR data, we built a model for density functional theory calculations which showed a nearly optimal binding energy for the *OOH intermediate. Alkaline water electrolysis (AWE) is among the most developed technologies for green hydrogen generation. Despite the tremendous achievements in boosting the catalytic activity of the electrode, the operating current density of modern water electrolyzers is yet much lower than the emerging approaches such as the proton-exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). One of the dominant hindering factors is the high overpotentials induced by the gas bubbles. Herein, the bubble dynamics via creating the superaerophobic electrode assembly is optimized. The patterned Co-Ni phosphide/spinel oxide heterostructure shows complete wetting of water droplet with fast spreading time (≈300 ms) whereas complete underwater bubble repelling with 180° contact angle is achieved. Besides, the current collector/electrode interface is also modified by coating with aerophobic hydroxide on Ti current collector. Thus, in the zero-gap water electrolyzer test, a current density of 3.5 A cm -2 is obtained at 2.25 V and 85 °C in 6 m KOH, which is comparable with the state-of-the-art PEMWE using Pt-group metal catalyst. No major performance degradation or materials deterioration is observed after 330 h test. Plastics are ubiquitous in our society. They are in our phones, clothes, bottles, and cars. Yet having improved our lives considerably, they now threaten our environment and our health. The associated carbon emissions and persistency of plastics challenge the fragile balance of many ecosystems. One solution is using biodegradable plastics. Ideally, such plastics are easily assimilated by microorganisms and disappear from our environment. This can help reduce the problems of climate change, microplastics, and littering. However, biodegradable plastics are still only a tiny portion of the global plastics market and require further efforts in research and commercialization. Here, a critical overview of the state of the art of biodegradable plastics is given. Using a material flow analysis, the challenges of the plastic market are highlighted, and with it the large market potential of biodegradable plastics. The environmental and socio-economic impact of plastics, government policies, standards and certifications, physico-chemical properties, and analytical techniques are covered. MAX (M n+1 AX n ) phases are layered carbides or nitrides with a high thermal and mechanical bulk stability. Recently, it was shown that their surface structure can be modified to form a thin non-stoichiometric oxide layer, which can catalyze the oxidative dehydrogenation of butane. Here, the use of a Ti 2 AlC MAX phase as a support for cobalt oxide was explored for the dry reforming of butane with CO 2 , comparing this new catalyst to more traditional materials. The catalyst was active and selective to synthesis gas. Although the surface structure changed during the reaction, the activity remained stable. Under the same conditions, a titania-supported cobalt oxide catalyst gave low activity and stability due to the agglomeration of cobalt oxide particles. The Co 3 O 4 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst was active, but the acidic surface led to a faster deactivation. The less acidic surface of the Ti 2 AlC was better at inhibiting coke formation. We present a new device for quantifying gases or gas mixtures based on the simple principle of bubble counting. With this device, we can follow reaction kinetics down to volume step sizes of 8-12 μL. This enables the accurate determination of both time and size of these gas quanta, giving a very detailed kinetic analysis. We demonstrate this method and device using ammonia borane hydrolysis as a model reaction, obtaining Arrhenius plots with over 300 data points from a single experiment. Our device not only saves time and avoids frustration, but also offers more insight into reaction kinetics and mechanistic studies. One of the main initiatives for fighting climate change is to use carbon dioxide as a resource instead of waste. In this respect, thermocatalytic carbon dioxide hydrogenation to high-added-value chemicals is a promising process. Among the products of this reaction (alcohols, alkanes, olefins, or aromatics), light olefins are interesting because they are building blocks for making polymers, as well as other important chemicals. Olefins are mainly produced from fossil fuel sources, but the increasing demand of plastics boosts the need to develop more sustainable synthetic routes. This review gives a critical overview of the most recent achievements in direct carbon dioxide hydrogenation to light olefins, which can take place through two competitive routes: the modified Fischer-Tropsch synthesis and methanol-mediated synthesis. Both routes are compared in terms of catalyst development, reaction performance, and reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, practical aspects of the commercialization of this reaction, such as renewable hydrogen production and carbon dioxide capture, compression, and transport, are discussed. It is concluded that, to date, the catalysts used in the carbon dioxide hydrogenation reaction give a wide product distribution, which reduces the specific selectivity to lower olefins. More efforts are needed to reach better control of the C/H surface ratio and interactions within the functionalities of the catalyst, as well as understanding the reaction mechanism and avoiding deactivation. In this short critical perspective, we outline the serious problems caused by air pollution in Europe. Using two types of metrics, level assessment and trend assessment, we quantify the contribution of ammonia, NO x , SO x , non-methane volatile organic compounds, and particulate matter in terms of years of life lost per capita and explain the connection between the various pollutants and their effects on human health and the environment. This is done on the basis of data collected by individual European Union (EU) member states as well as by the EU as a whole. We examine general emission trends as well as sector-specific emissions and discuss the effectiveness of current legislation in reducing health risks and environmental damage. We consider the factors that govern the activity of bifunctional catalysts comprised of active particles supported on active surfaces. Such catalysts are interesting because the adsorption and diffusion steps, which are often discounted in "conventional" catalytic scenarios, play a key role here. We present an intuitive model, the so-called "active doughnut" concept, defining an active catalytic region around the supported particles. This simple model explains the role of adsorption and diffusion steps in cascade catalytic cycles for active particles supported on active surfaces. The concept has two important practical implications. First, the reaction rate is no longer proportional to the number of active sites, but rather to the number of " communicative" active sites-those available to the reaction intermediates during their respective lifetimes. Second, it generates an important testable prediction concerning the dependence of the total reaction rate on the particle size. With these tools at hand, we examine six experimental examples of catalytic oxidation from the literature, and show that the active doughnut concept gives valuable insight even when detailed mechanistic information is hard to come by.

We study the allylic oxidation of cyclohexene with O 2 under mild conditions in the presence of transition-metal catalysts. The catalysts comprise nanometric metal oxide particles supported on porous N-doped carbons (M/N:C, M=V, Cr, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Nb, Mo, W). Most of these metal oxides give only moderate conversions, and the majority of the products are over-oxidation products. Co/N:C and Cu/N:C, however, give 70-80 % conversion and 40-50 % selectivity to the ketone product, cyclohexene-2-one. Control experiments in which we used free-radical scavengers show that the oxidation follows the expected free-radical pathway in almost all cases. Surprisingly, the catalytic cycle in the presence of Cu/N:C does not involve free-radical species in solution. Optimisation of this catalyst gives >85 % conversion with >60 % selectivity to the allylic ketone at 70 °C and 10 bar O 2 . We used SEM, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and XRD to show that the active particles have a cupric oxide/cuprous oxide core-shell structure, giving a high turnover frequency of approximately 1500 h -1 . We attribute the high performance of this Cu/N:C catalyst to a facile surface reaction between adsorbed cyclohexenyl hydroperoxide molecules and activated oxygen species.

Dehydrogenation or oxidative dehydrogenation (ODH) of alkanes to produce alkenes directly from natural gas/shale gas is gaining in importance. Ti 3 AlC 2 , a MAX phase, which hitherto had not been used in catalysis, efficiently catalyzes the ODH of n-butane to butenes and butadiene, which are important intermediates for the synthesis of polymers and other compounds. The catalyst, which combines both metallic and ceramic properties, is stable for at least 30 h on stream, even at low O 2 :butane ratios, without suffering from coking. This material has neither lattice oxygens nor noble metals, yet a unique combination of numerous defects and a thin surface Ti 1-y Al y O 2-y/2 layer that is rich in oxygen vacancies makes it an active catalyst. Catalytic biomass conversion is often hindered by coking. Carbon compounds cover active surface and plug pores, causing catalyst deactivation. Material design at the nanoscale allows tailoring of the catalytic activity and stability. Here, we report a simple synthesis of nanosized ZSM-5 materials by using a silicalite-1 seeding suspension. ZSM-5 crystals were grown from a deionized silica source in the presence of ammonia. By using silicalite-1 seeds, crystalline ZSM-5 is synthesized without any structure-directing agent. This method allows parallel preparation of a range of ZSM-5 samples, eliminating time-consuming ion-exchange steps. Mesoporosity is introduced by formation of intercrystallite voids, owing to nanocrystal agglomeration. The effects of crystal sizes and morphologies are then evaluated in the catalytic dehydration of glycerol to acrolein, with results compared against commercial ZSM-5. The most active nanosized ZSM-5 catalysts were five times more stable compared with commercial ZSM-5, giving quantitative conversion and twice the acrolein yield compared with the commercial catalyst. The influence of the catalyst structure on the chemical diffusion and the resistance to coking are discussed.

We report a facile and general approach for preparing ultrafine ruthenium nanocatalysts by using a plasma-assisted synthesis at <100 °C. The resulting Ru nanoparticles are monodispersed (typical size 2 nm) and remain that way upon loading onto carbon and TiO 2 supports. This gives robust catalysts with excellent activities in both organosilane oxidation and the oxygen evolution reaction.

Petrochemical refineries must separate hydrocarbon mixtures on a large scale for the production of fuels and chemicals. Typically, these hydrocarbons are separated by distillation, which is extremely energy intensive. This high energy cost can be mitigated by developing materials that can enable efficient adsorptive separation. In this critical review, the principles of adsorptive separation are outlined, and then the case for C 4 separations by using zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is examined. By analyzing both experimental and theoretical studies, the challenges and opportunities in C 4 separation are outlined, with a focus on the separation mechanisms and structure-selectivity correlations. Zeolites are commonly used as adsorbents and, in some cases, can separate C 4 mixtures well. The pore sizes of eight-membered-ring zeolites, for example, are in the order of the kinetic diameters of C 4 isomers. Although zeolites have the advantage of a rigid and highly stable structure, this is often difficult to functionalize. MOFs are attractive candidates for hydrocarbon separation because their pores can be tailored to optimize the adsorbate-adsorbent interactions. MOF-5 and ZIF-7 show promising results in separating all C 4 isomers, but breakthrough experiments under industrial conditions are needed to confirm these results. Moreover, the flexibility of the MOF structures could hamper their application under industrial conditions. The specific capacitance of a highly porous, nitrogen-doped carbon is nearly tripled by orthogonal optimization of the microstructure and surface chemistry. First, the carbons' hierarchical pore structure and specific surface area were tweaked by controlling the temperature and sequence of the thermal treatments. The best process (pyrolysis at 900 °C, washing, and subsequent annealing at 1000 °C) yielded a carbon with a specific capacitance of 117 F g -1 -nearly double that of a carbon made by a typical single-step synthesis at 700 °C. Following the structural optimization, the surface chemistry of the carbons was enriched by applying an oxidation routine based on a mixture of nitric and sulfuric acid in a 1:4 ratio at two different treatment temperatures (0 and 20 °C) and different treatment times. The optimal treatment times were 4 h at 0 °C and only 1 h at 20 °C. Overall, the specific capacitance nearly tripled relative to the original carbon, reaching 168 F g -1 . The inherent nitrogen doping of the carbon comes into interplay with the acid-induced surface functionalization, creating a mixture of oxygen- and nitrogen-oxygen functionalities. The evolution of the surface chemistry was carefully followed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and by N 2 sorption porosimetry, revealing stepwise surface functionalization and simultaneous carbon etching. We introduce the concept of using site-specific sulfation of various lignins for increasing their aqueous solubility and thereby their processability. Using p-nitrophenylsulfate as a sulfate source and an aryl sulfotransferase enzyme as catalyst, lignins are easily sulfated at ambient conditions. We demonstrate the specific sulfation of phenolic hydroxyl groups on five different lignins: Indulin AT (Kraft softwood), Protobind 1000 (mixed wheat straw/Sarkanda grass soda) and three organosolv lignins. The reaction proceeds smoothly and the increase in solubility is visible to the naked eye. We then examine the reaction kinetics, and show that these are easily monitored qualitatively and quantitatively using UV/Vis spectroscopy. The UV/Vis results are validated with 31 P NMR spectroscopy of the lignin phenol groups after derivatization with phosphorylation reagent II. We explored the depolymerisation of several lignins in liquid ammonia at relatively high temperatures and pressures (120 °C and 88 bar). Five different lignins were tested: Indulin AT kraft, Protobind 1000 soda, wheat straw organosolv, poplar organosolv and elephant grass-milled wood lignin (EG MWL). In pure liquid ammonia, all lignins underwent slow incorporation of nitrogen into their structure, resulting in higher molecular weight and polydispersity index. Subsequently, we show a reductive depolymerisation by solvated electrons at room temperature by adding sodium metal to the liquid ammonia without any external hydrogen donor. The netto yields of bio-oil are low for technical lignins (10-23 %), but with higher yields of alkylphenols. In the case of native EG MWL, netto yields of 40 % bio-oil were achieved. Finally, when the room temperature method was applied to poplar wood fibre, we observe improved delignification upon the addition of sodium compared to poplar wood fractionation in pure liquid ammonia., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) monolithic stationary phases with two different domain sizes were synthesized by a thermally initiated free-radical copolymerization in capillary columns. The morphology was investigated at the meso- and macroscopic level using complementary physical characterization techniques aiming at better understanding the effect of column structure on separation performance. Varying the porogenic solvent ratio yielded materials with a mode pore size of 200 nm and 1.5 μm, respectively. Subsequently, nano-liquid chromatography experiments were performed on 200 μm id × 200 mm columns using unretained markers, linking structure inhomogeneity to eddy dispersion. Although small-domain-size monoliths feature a relatively narrow macropore-size distribution, their homogeneity is compromised by the presence of a small number of large macropores, which induces a significant eddy-dispersion contribution to band broadening. The small-domain size monolith also has a relatively steep mass-transfer term, compared to a monolith containing larger globules and macropores. Structural inhomogeneity was also studied at the mesoscopic level using gas-adsorption techniques combined with the non-local-density-function-theory. This model allows to accurately determine the mesopore properties in the dry state. The styrene-based monolith with small domain size has a distinctive trimodal mesopore distribution with pores of 5, 15, and 25 nm, whereas the monolith with larger feature sizes only contains mesopores around 5 nm in size., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The activation of dioxygen for selective oxidation of organic molecules is a major catalytic challenge. Inspired by the activity of nitrogen-doped carbons in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, we combined such a carbon with metal-oxide catalysts to yield cooperative catalysts. These simple materials boost the catalytic oxidation of several alcohols, using molecular oxygen at atmospheric pressure and low temperature (80 °C). Cobalt and copper oxide demonstrate the highest activities. The high activity and selectivity of these catalysts arises from the cooperative action of their components, as proven by various control experiments and spectroscopic techniques. Replacing platinum as an oxygen reduction catalyst is an important scientific and technological challenge. Herein we report a simple synthesis of a complex carbon with very good oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity at pH 13. Pyrolysis of magnesium nitrilotriacetate yields a carbon with hierarchical micro/meso/macro porosity, resulting from in situ templating by spontaneously forming MgO nanoparticles and from etching by pyrolysis gases. The mesopores are lined with highly graphitic shells. The high ORR activity is attributed to a good balance between high specific surface area and mass transport through the hierarchical porosity, and to improved electronic conductivity through the graphitic shells. This novel carbon has a high surface area (1320 m(2) g(-1) ), and high nitrogen content for a single precursor synthesis (∼6 %). We present a new metal-organic framework (MOF) built from lanthanum and pyrazine-2,5-dicarboxylate (pyzdc) ions. This MOF, [La(pyzdc)1.5(H2O)2]⋅2 H2O, is microporous, with 1D channels that easily accommodate water molecules. Its framework is highly robust to dehydration/hydration cycles. Unusually for a MOF, it also features a high hydrothermal stability. This makes it an ideal candidate for air drying as well as for separating water/alcohol mixtures. The ability of the activated MOF to adsorb water selectively was evaluated by means of thermogravimetric analysis, powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction and adsorption studies, indicating a maximum uptake of 1.2 mmol g(-1) MOF. These results are in agreement with the microporous structure, which permits only water molecules to enter the channels (alcohols, including methanol, are simply too large). We study the catalytic condensation of furfuryl alcohol with 1-butanol to butyl levulinate. A screening of several commercial and as-synthesized solid acid catalysts shows that propylsulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica outperforms the state-of-the-art phosphotungstate acid catalysts. The catalyst is prepared via template-assisted sol-gel polycondensation of TEOS and MPTMS. It gives 96 % yield (and 100 % selectivity) of butyl levulinate in 4 h at 110 °C. Reaction profiles before and after a hot filtration test confirm that the active catalytic species do not leach into the solution. A method is presented for the high-throughput monitoring of reaction kinetics in homogeneous catalysis, running up to 25 coupling reactions in a single reaction vessel. This method is demonstrated and validated on the Sonogashira reaction, analyzing the kinetics for almost 500 coupling reactions. First, one-pot reactions of phenylacetylene with a set of 20 different meta- and para-substituted aryl bromides were analyzed in the presence of 17 different Pd-phosphine complexes. In addition, the temperature-dependent Sonogashira reactions were examined for 21 different ArX (X=Cl, Br, I) substrates, and the corresponding activation enthalpies and entropies were determined by means of Eyring plots: ArI (DeltaH(not equal)=48-62 kJ mol(-1); DeltaS(not equal)=-71--39 J mol(-1) K; NO(2)-->OMe), ArBr (DeltaH(not equal)=54-82 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS(not equal)=-55-11 J mol(-1) K), and ArCl (DeltaH(not equal)=95-144 kJ mol(-1), DeltaS(not equal)=-6-100 J mol(-1) K). DFT calculations established a linear correlation of DeltaH( not equal) and the Kohn-Sham HOMO energies of ArX (X=Cl, Br, I) and confirmed their involvement in the rate-limiting step. However, despite different C--X bond energies, aryl iodides and electron-deficient aryl bromides showed similar activation parameters.

The pros and cons of oxidative dehydrogenation of propane are outlined and a new catalytic system based on metal-doped cerianite catalysts is introduced. These novel materials catalyze the selective combustion of hydrogen from a mixture of hydrogen, propane, and propene at 550 degrees C. This gives three key advantages: energy is supplied directly where needed, product separation is made easier, and the dehydrogenation equilibrium is shifted to the desired products. A set of eighteen doped cerianites was synthesized in parallel, characterized, and screened for activity, selectivity, and stability in a cyclic redox system. The best results were obtained with Ce(0.89)Cr(0.02)Fe(0.09)O(2), Ce(0.98)Sn(0.02)O(2), and Ce(0.96)Cu(0.02)Zn(0.02)O(2), which gave 98 %, 91 %, and 98 % selectivity, respectively. Ce(0.89)Cr(0.02)Fe(0.09)O(2) also shows excellent stability in over 120 cycles (66 h on stream at 550 degrees C). Importantly, these doped cerias are monophasic crystalline materials. The dopants are incorporated as solid solutions throughout the fluorite lattice. This means that these catalysts are very stable (they do not sinter during reduction) as opposed to traditional supported metal oxides. The results show that both activity and selectivity towards hydrogen combustion can be tuned (increased or decreased) by selecting the appropriate dopant. Furthermore, the trends in selectivity differ from those measured on supported oxides of the same elements, which indicates that these novel materials indeed contain unique active sites. The factors governing selectivity towards hydrogen oxidation and the nature of the active site are discussed.

Leaching of palladium species from Pd nanoparticles under C--C coupling conditions was observed for both Heck and Suzuki reactions by using a special membrane reactor. The membrane allows the passage of palladium atoms and ions, but not of species larger than 5 nm. Three possible mechanistic scenarios for palladium leaching were investigated with the aim of identifying the true catalytic species. Firstly, we examined whether or not palladium(0) atoms could leach from clusters under non-oxidising conditions. By using our membrane reactor, we proved that this indeed happens. We then investigated whether or not small palladium(0) clusters could in fact be the active catalytic species by analysing the reaction composition and the palladium species that diffused through the membrane. Neither TEM nor ICP analysis supported this scenario. Finally, we tested whether or not palladium(II) ions could be leached in the presence of PhI by oxidative addition and the formation of [Pd(II)ArI] complexes. Using mass spectrometry, UV-visible spectroscopy and 13C NMR spectroscopy, we observed and monitored the formation and diffusion of these complexes, which showed that the first and the third mechanistic scenarios were both possible, and were likely to occur simultaneously. Based on these findings, we maintain that palladium nanoparticles are not the true catalysts in C--C coupling reactions. Instead, catalysis is carried out by either palladium(0) atoms or palladium(II) ions that leach into solution.

Combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput experimentation (HTE) have revolutionized the pharmaceutical industry-but can chemists truly repeat this success in the fields of catalysis and materials science? We propose to bridge the traditional "discovery" and "optimization" stages in HTE by enabling parallel kinetic analysis of an array of chemical reactions. We present here the theoretical basis to extract concentration profiles from reaction arrays and derive the optimal criteria to follow (pseudo)first-order reactions in time in parallel systems. We use the information vector f and introduce in this context the information gain ratio, chi(r), to quantify the amount of useful information that can be obtained by measuring the extent of a specified reaction r in the array at any given time. Our method is general and independent of the analysis technique, but it is more effective if the analysis is performed on-line. The feasibility of this new approach is demonstrated in the fast kinetic analysis of the carbon-sulfur coupling between 3-chlorophenylhydrazonopropane dinitrile and beta-mercaptoethanol. The theory agrees well with the results obtained from 31 repeated C-S coupling experiments.
