Spin-transfer torque (STT) and spin-orbit torque (SOT) form the core of spintronics, allowing for the control of magnetization through electric currents. While the sign of SOT can be manipulated through material and structural engineering, it is conventionally understood that STT lacks a degree of freedom in its sign. However, this study presents the first demonstration of manipulating the STT sign by engineering heavy metals adjacent to magnetic materials in magnetic heterostructures. Spin torques are quantified through magnetic domain-wall speed measurements, and subsequently, both STT and SOT are systematically extracted from these measurements. The results unequivocally show that the sign of STT can be either positive or negative, depending on the materials adjacent to the magnetic layers. Specifically, Pd/Co/Pd films exhibit positive STT, while Pt/Co/Pt films manifest negative STT. Spin current, converted from charge current via spin Hall or Rashba effects, can transfer its angular momentum to local moments in a ferromagnetic layer. In this regard, the high charge-to-spin conversion efficiency is required for magnetization manipulation for developing future memory or logic devices including magnetic random-access memory. Here, the bulk Rashba-type charge-to-spin conversion is demonstrated in an artificial superlattice without centrosymmetry. The charge-to-spin conversion in [Pt/Co/W] superlattice with sub-nm scale thickness shows strong W thickness dependence. When the W thickness becomes 0.6 nm, the observed field-like torque efficiency is about 0.6, which is an order larger than other metallic heterostructures. First-principles calculation suggests that such large field-like torque arises from bulk-type Rashba effect due to the vertically broken inversion symmetry inherent from W layers. The result implies that the spin splitting in a band of such an ABC-type artificial SL can be an additional degree of freedom for the large charge-to-spin conversion., (© 2023 The Authors. Orbital anisotropy at interfaces in magnetic heterostructures has been key to pioneering spin-orbit-related phenomena. However, modulating the interface's electronic structure to make it abnormally asymmetric has been challenging because of lack of appropriate methods. Here, the authors report that low-energy proton irradiation achieves a strong level of inversion asymmetry and unusual strain at interfaces in [Co/Pd] superlattices through nondestructive, selective removal of oxygen from Co 3 O 4 /Pd superlattices during irradiation. Structural investigations corroborate that progressive reduction of Co 3 O 4 into Co establishes pseudomorphic growth with sharp interfaces and atypically large tensile stress. The normal component of orbital to spin magnetic moment at the interface is the largest among those observed in layered Co systems, which is associated with giant orbital anisotropy theoretically confirmed, and resulting very large interfacial magnetic anisotropy is observed. All results attribute not only to giant orbital anisotropy but to enhanced interfacial spin-orbit coupling owing to the pseudomorphic nature at the interface. They are strongly supported by the observation of reversal of polarity of temperature-dependent Anomalous Hall signal, a signature of Berry phase. This work suggests that establishing both giant orbital anisotropy and strong spin-orbit coupling at the interface is key to exploring spintronic devices with new functionalities., (© 2022 The Authors.
