The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is a critical process that limits the efficiency of fuel cells and metal-air batteries due to its slow kinetics, even when catalyzed by platinum (Pt). To reduce Pt usage, enhancing both the specific activity and electrochemically active surface area (ECSA) of Pt catalysts is essential. Here, ultrafine, grain boundary (GB)-rich Pt nanoparticle assemblies are proposed as efficient ORR catalysts. These nanowires offer a large ECSA and a high density of concave GB sites, which improve specific activity. Atoms at these GB sites exhibit increased coordination and lattice distortion, leading to a favorable reduction in oxygen binding energy and enhanced ORR performance. Furthermore, boron segregation stabilizes these GBs, preserving active sites during catalysis. The resulting boron-stabilized Pt nanoassemblies demonstrate ORR specific and mass activities of 9.18 mA cm -2 and 6.40 A mg -1 Pt (at 0.9 V vs. RHE), surpassing commercial Pt/C catalysts by over 35-fold, with minimal degradation after 60 000 potential cycles. Colloidal metal nanoparticles exhibit interesting catalytic properties for the hydrogenation of (hetero)arenes. Catalysts based on precious metals, such as Ru and Rh, proceed efficiently under mild reaction conditions. In contrast, heterogeneous catalysts based on earth-abundant metals can selectively hydrogenate (hetero)arenes but require harsher reaction conditions. Bimetallic catalysts that combine precious and earth-abundant metals are interesting materials to mitigate the drawbacks of each component. To this end, RuNi nanoparticles bearing a phosphine ligand were prepared through the decomposition of [Ru(η4-C8H12)(η6-C8H10)] and [Ni(η4-C8H12)2] by H2 at 85°C. Wide angle X-ray scattering confirmed a bimetallic segregated structure, with Ni predominantly on the surface. Spectroscopic analyses revealed that the phosphine ligand coordinated to the surface of both metals, suggesting, as well, a partial Ni shell covering the Ru core. Recent trends in addressing the impending water crisis focus on the development of innovative water treatment methods. This work utilizes pollen as a core template to synthesize highly efficient onion-like photocatalysts for pollutant mineralization. The study showcases a novel electrochemical synthesis method that maintains the structural integrity of pollen, resulting in increased surface area and enhanced photocatalytic activity. After 90-min of visible light irradiation, over 99% mineralization is achieved. These hybrid photocatalysts demonstrate exceptional stability and efficacy in degrading pollutants. The used photocatalysts can be recycled into biopellets with an ash content of less than 7% (weight), moisture content of less than 8% (weight), and a calorific value of ≈22.1 ± 0.3 MJ kg -1 . Additionally, the resulting ashes serve as effective peroxymonosulphate activators for pollutant mineralization. This process offers sustainable waste management while minimizing waste production, providing a practical solution for water purification. Using single-crystal to single-crystal solid/gas reactivity the gold(I) acetylene complex [Au(L1)(η 2 -HC≡CH)][BAr F 4 ] is cleanly synthesized by addition of acetylene gas to single crystals of [Au(L1)(CO)][BAr F 4 ] [L1=tris-2-(4,4'-di-tert-butylbiphenyl)phosphine, Ar F =3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 C 6 H 3 ]. This simplest gold-alkyne complex has been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, solution and solid-state NMR spectroscopy and periodic DFT. The tert-butyl group is a common aliphatic motif extensively employed to implement steric congestion and conformational rigidity in organic and organometallic molecules. Because of the combination of a high bond dissociation energy (~100 kcal mol -1 ) and limited accessibility, in the absence of directing groups, neither radical nor organometallic approaches are effective for the chemical modification of tert-butyl C-H bonds. Herein we overcome these limits by employing a highly electrophilic manganese catalyst, [Mn( CF3 bpeb)(OTf) 2 ], that operates in the strong hydrogen bond donor solvent nonafluoro-tert-butyl alcohol (NFTBA) and catalytically activates hydrogen peroxide to generate a powerful manganese-oxo species that effectively oxidizes tert-butyl C-H bonds. Leveraging on the interplay of steric, electronic, medium and torsional effects, site-selective and product chemoselective hydroxylation of the tert-butyl group is accomplished with broad reaction scope, delivering primary alcohols as largely dominant products in preparative yields. Late-stage hydroxylation at tert-butyl sites is demonstrated on 6 densely functionalized molecules of pharmaceutical interest. It is well-known that people suffering from hyperglycemia have a higher propensity to develop Parkinson's disease (PD). One of the most plausible mechanisms linking these two pathologies is the glycation of neuronal proteins and the pathological consequences of it. α-Synuclein, a key component in PD, can be glycated at its fifteen lysine. In fact, the end products of this process have been detected on aggregated α-synuclein isolated from in vivo. However, the consequences of glycation are not entirely clear, which are of crucial importance to understand the mechanism underlying the connection between diabetes and PD. To better clarify this, we have here examined how methylglyoxal (the most important carbonyl compound found in the cytoplasm) affects the conformation and aggregation propensity of α-synuclein, as well as its ability to cluster and fuse synaptic-like vesicles. The obtained data prove that methylglyoxal induces the Lys-Lys crosslinking through the formation of MOLD. However, this does not have a remarkable effect on the averaged conformational ensemble of α-synuclein, although it completely depletes its native propensity to form soluble oligomers and insoluble amyloid fibrils. Developing a desirable ethanol dehydrogenation process necessitates a highly efficient and selective catalyst with low cost. Herein, we show that the "complex active site" consisting of atomically dispersed Au atoms with the neighboring oxygen vacancies (Vo) and undercoordinated cation on oxide supports can be prepared and display unique catalytic properties for ethanol dehydrogenation. The "complex active site" Au-Vo-Zr3+ on Au1/ZrO2 exhibits the highest H2 production rate, with above 37,964 mol H2 per mol Au per hour (385 g H2 g-1 Au h-1) at 350 oC, which is 3.32, 2.94 and 15 times higher than Au1/CeO2, Au1/TiO2, and Au1/Al2O3, respectively. Combining experimental and theoretical studies, we demonstrate the structural sensitivity of these complex sites by assessing their selectivity and activity in ethanol dehydrogenation. Our study sheds new light on the design and development of cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts for ethanol dehydrogenation. Precise control of substrate positioning and orientation (its proximity to the reactive unit) is often invoked to rationalize the superior enzymatic reaction rates and selectivities when compared to synthetic models. Artificial nonheme iron (IV) oxo (Fe(IV)=O) complexes react with C(sp 3 )-H bonds via a biomimetic Hydrogen Atom Transfer/Hydroxyl Rebound mechanism, but rates, site-selectivity and even hydroxyl rebound efficiency (ligand rebound versus substrate radical diffusion) are smaller than in oxygenases. Herein, we quantitatively analyze how substrate binding modulates nonheme Fe(IV)=O reactivity by comparing rates and outcomes of C-H oxidation by a pair of Fe(IV)=O complexes that share the same first coordination sphere but only one contains a crown ether receptor that recognizes the substrate. Substrate binding makes the reaction intramolecular, exhibiting Michaelis-Menten kinetics and increased reaction rates. In addition, C-H oxidation occurs with high site selectivity for remote sites. Analysis of Effective Molarity reveals that the system operates at its maximal theoretical capability for the oxidation of these remote sites. Remarkably, substrate positioning also affects Hydroxyl Rebound, whose efficiency only increases on the sites placed in proximity by recognition. While multi-junction geometries have the potential to boost the efficiency of organic solar cells, the experimental gains yet obtained are still very modest. This work proposes an alternative spectral splitting device concept in which various individual semiconducting junctions with cascading bandgaps are laid side by side, thus the name RAINBOW. Each lateral sub-cell receives a fraction of the spectrum that closely matches the main absorption band of the given semiconductor. Here, simulations are used to identify the important material and device properties of each RAINBOW sub-cell. Using the resulting design rules, three systems are selected, with narrow, medium, and wide effective bandgaps, and their potential as sub-cells in this geometry is experimentally investigated. With the aid of a custom-built setup that generates spectrally spread sunlight on demand, the simulations are experimentally validated, showing that this geometry can lead to a reduction in thermalization losses and an improvement in light harvesting, which results in a relative improvement in efficiency of 46.6% with respect to the best sub-cell. Finally, a working proof-of-concept monolithic device consisting of two sub-cells deposited from solution on the same substrate is fabricated, thus demonstrating the feasibility and the potential of the RAINBOW solar cell concept., (© 2023 The Authors. A bulky, tridentate phenolate ligand (Im Ph2 NNO tBu ) was used to synthesise the first example of a mononuclear, facial, N,N,O-bound iron(II) benzoylformate complex, [Fe(Im Ph2 NNO tBu )(BF)] (2). The X-ray crystal structure of 2 reveals that the iron centre is pentacoordinate (τ=0.5), with a vacant site located cis to the bidentate BF ligand. The Mössbauer parameters of 2 are consistent with high-spin iron(II), and are very close to those reported for α-ketoglutarate-bound non-heme iron enzyme active sites. According to NMR and UV-vis spectroscopies, the structural integrity of 2 is retained in both coordinating and non-coordinating solvents. Cyclic voltammetry studies show that the iron centre has a very low oxidation potential and is more prone to electrochemical oxidation than the redox-active phenolate ligand. Complex 2 reacts with NO to form a S= 3 / 2 {FeNO} 7 adduct in which NO binds directly to the iron centre, according to EPR, UV-vis, IR spectroscopies and DFT analysis. Upon O 2 exposure, 2 undergoes oxidative decarboxylation to form a diiron(III) benzoate complex, [Fe 2 (Im Ph2 NNO tBu ) 2 (μ 2 -OBz)(μ 2 -OH) 2 ] + (3). A small amount of hydroxylated ligand was also observed by ESI-MS, hinting at the formation of a high-valent iron(IV)-oxo intermediate. We have quantum chemically investigated the boron-boron bonds in B 2 , diborynes B 2 L 2 , and diborenes B 2 H 2 L 2 (L=none, OH 2 , NH 3 ) using dispersion-corrected relativistic density functional theory at ZORA-BLYP-D3(BJ)/TZ2P. B 2 has effectively a single B-B bond provided by two half π bonds, whereas B 2 H 2 has effectively a double B=B bond provided by two half π bonds and one σ 2p-2p bond. This different electronic structure causes B 2 and B 2 H 2 to react differently to the addition of ligands. Thus, in B 2 L 2 , electron-donating ligands shorten and strengthen the boron-boron bond whereas, in B 2 H 2 L 2 , they lengthen and weaken the boron-boron bond. The aforementioned variations in boron-boron bond length and strength become more pronounced as the Lewis basicity of the ligands L increases., (© 2023 The Authors. Cobaltabis(dicarbollides), ferrabis(dicarbollide), and their halogenated derivatives are the most studied metallacarboranes with great medical potential. These versatile compounds and their iodinated derivatives can be used in chemotherapy, radiotherapy, particle therapy, and bioimaging when isotopes are used. These metallacarboranes have been evaluated in vitro and recently in vivo with complex animal models. Lately, these studies have been complemented using the invertebrate Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a nematode largely used in toxicology. When evaluated at the L4 stage, cobaltabis(dicarbollides), ([o-COSAN] - and [8,8'-I 2 -o-COSAN] - ), exhibited a higher mean lethal dose (LD 50 ) than ferrabis(dicarbollides) ([o-FESAN] - and [8,8'-I 2 -o-FESAN] - ). In this work, we used the C. elegans embryos since they are a complex biological barrier with concentric layers of polysaccharides and proteins that protect them from the environment. We assessed if the metal atom changes their biointeraction with the C. elegans embryos. First, we assessed the effects on embryo development for metallacarboranes and their di-iodinated derivatives. We observed changes in color and in their surface structure. An exhaustive physicochemical characterization was performed to understand better this interaction, revealing a stronger interaction of ferrabis(dicarbollide) compounds with C. elegans embryos than the cobaltabis(dicarbollide) molecules. Nowadays, an active research topic is the connection between Clar's rule, aromaticity, and magnetic properties of polycyclic benzenoid hydrocarbons. In the present work, we employ a meticulous magnetically induced current density analysis to define the net current flowing through any cyclic circuit, connecting it to aromaticity based on the ring current concept. Our investigation reveals that the analyzed polycyclic systems display a prominent global ring current, contrasting with subdued semi-local and local ring currents. These patterns align with Clar's aromatic π-sextets only in cases where migrating π-sextet structures are invoked. To interrogate neural circuits and crack their codes, in vivo brain activity imaging must be combined with spatiotemporally precise stimulation in three dimensions using genetic or pharmacological specificity. This challenge requires deep penetration and focusing as provided by infrared light and multiphoton excitation, and has promoted two-photon photopharmacology and optogenetics. However, three-photon brain stimulation in vivo remains to be demonstrated. We report the regulation of neuronal activity in zebrafish larvae by three-photon excitation of a photoswitchable muscarinic agonist at 50 pM, a billion-fold lower concentration than used for uncaging, and with mid-infrared light of 1560 nm, the longest reported photoswitch wavelength. Robust, physiologically relevant photoresponses allow modulating brain activity in wild-type animals with spatiotemporal and pharmacological precision. Computational calculations predict that azobenzene-based ligands have high three-photon absorption cross-section and can be used directly with pulsed infrared light. The homolytic elimination of two H atoms from two adjacent carbons in benzene results in the aromatic product o-benzyne. In a similar way, the homolytic elimination of two H atoms from the two adjacent carbons in 1,2-C 2 B 10 H 12 results in the aromatic product o-carboryne. In this work, we provide experimental and computational evidences that despite the similarity of o-carboryne and o-benzyne, the nature of the C-C bond generated between two adjacent carbons that lose H atoms is different. While in o-benzyne the C-C bond behaves as a triple bond, in o-carboryne the C-C bond is a double bond. Synthetic strategies to access high-valent iridium complexes usually require use of π donating ligands bearing electronegative atoms (e. g. amide or oxide) or σ donating electropositive atoms (e. g. boryl or hydride). Besides the η 5 -(methyl)cyclopentadienyl derivatives, high-valent η 1 carbon-ligated iridium complexes are challenging to synthesize. To meet this challenge, this work reports the oxidation behavior of an all-carbon-ligated anionic bis(CCC-pincer) Ir III complex. Being both σ and π donating, the diaryl dipyrido-annulated N-heterocyclic carbene (dpa-NHC) Ir III complex allowed a stepwise 4e - oxidation sequence. The first 2e - oxidation led to an oxidative coupling of two adjacent aryl groups, resulting in formation of a cationic chiral Ir III complex bearing a CCCC-tetradentate ligand. A further 2e - oxidation allowed isolation of a high-valent tricationic complex with a triplet ground state. A cavity-shaped gold(I) complex derived from a bulky tri-(ortho-biaryl)-phosphine ligand shows preferred selectivity towards terminal functionalities in the gold(I)-catalysed hydration of alkynes under mild heating due to a well-defined pocket as catalytic active site. The confinement-induced size-exclusion selectivity investigated for eight alkynes contrasts with other gold(I) complexes bearing bulky phosphine ligands that show reduced selectivity or even similar behaviour towards both internal and terminal alkynes. An approach to modulating the properties of carbon nanorings by incorporating pyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole units is of particular interest due to the combined effect of heteroatom and antiaromatic character on electronic properties. The inclusion of units other than phenylene leads to the formation of stereoisomers. In this work, we computationally study how the spatial orientation of monomeric units in the ring affects the properties of cyclic dibenzopyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrroles and their complexes with C 60 fullerene. For [4]PP and [4]DHPP, the most symmetrical AAAA isomer is the most stable and forms stronger interactions with fullerene than the isomers where one or two monomeric units are flipped, mostly due to less Pauli repulsion. π-Electron delocalization in the monomeric unit is crucial for directing the electron transfer (from or to nanoring). The energy of excited states with charge transfer depends on the HOMO-LUMO gap, which varies from one stereoisomer to another only for [4]DHPP⊃C 60 with aromatic 1,4-dihydropyrrolo[3,2-b]pyrrole units. For decades there were many attempts to dispense with stoichiometric amounts of metal reagents for the synthesis of secondary alcohols. In 2021, the synthetic results of Newman and collaborators pioneered a synthesis still with metals, but not as reactants. Instead, they serverd as catalytic engines. Here we present a description by means of Density Functional Theory calculations of how this process can occur, and an attempt is made to shed light on the mechanism that facilitates the attainment of secondary alcohols, emphasizing the eternal cross-coupling debate of whether the catalytically active species is Ni(0) or they are really taking shortcuts following the course of Ni(II). Effective Orbital analyses give a clear picture. Scope: Polyphenols health effects on obesity are mainly attributed to their metabolites generated after their gastrointestinal digestion, in which gut microbiota plays an important role. Moreover, gut microbiota composition and polyphenols bioavailability are influenced by differences in day light length (photoperiod). Thus, this study evaluates if a grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSPEs) extract bioavailability is influenced by different photoperiod exposure via gut microbiota modulation in an obesogenic context., Methods and Results: Cafeteria diet-induced obese Fischer 344 rats are housed under different photoperiod conditions (6, 12, or 18 h of light per day) during 9 weeks and administered with GSPE (25 mg kg -1 ) or GSPE and an antibiotic cocktail (ABX) for the last 4 weeks. Serum GSPE-derived metabolites are quantified by HPLC-MS/MS., Conclusion: A higher bioavailability is observed under 6 h light/18 h darkness (L6) compared to 18 h light/6 h darkness (L18). Individual metabolites, especially those from the gut microbiota, are affected by photoperiods. ABX treatment alters these photoperiod-mediated changes. Scope: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) provide a useful and minimally invasive source of biomarkers. Here to identify PBMC transcriptomic biomarkers predictive of metabolic impairment related to increased adiposity is aimed., Methods and Results: The study analyzed the global PBMC transcriptome in metabolically healthy (normoglycemic) volunteers with overweight-obesity (OW-OB, n = 12), and in subjects with metabolically obese normal-weight (MONW, n = 5) phenotype, in comparison to normal-weight (NW, n = 12) controls. The study identifies 1072 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in OW-OB versus NW and 992 in MONW versus NW. Hierarchical clustering of the top 100 DEGs clearly distinguishes OW-OB and MONW from NW. Remarkably, the OW-OB and MONW phenotypes share 257 DEGs regulated in the same direction. The top up-regulated gene CXCL8, coding for interleukin 8, with a role in obesity-related pathologies, is of special interest as a potential marker for predicting increased metabolic risk. CXCL8 expression is increased mainly in the MONW group and correlated directly with C-reactive protein levels., Conclusions: PBMC gene expression analysis of CXCL8 or a pool of DEGs may be used to identify early metabolic risk in an apparently healthy population regardless of their BMI, i.e., subjects with OW-OB or MONW phenotype and to apply adequate and personalized nutritional preventive strategies., (© 2023 The Authors. Despite the central role of aromaticity in the chemistry of expanded porphyrins, the evaluation of aromaticity remains difficult for these extended macrocycles. The presence of multiple conjugation pathways and different planar and nonplanar π-conjugation topologies makes the quantification of global and local aromaticity even more challenging. In neutral expanded porphyrins, the predominance of the aromatic conjugation pathway passing through the imine-type nitrogens and circumventing the amino NH groups is established. However, for charged macrocycles, the question about the main conjugation circuit remains open. Accordingly, different conjugation pathways in a set of neutral, anionic, and cationic expanded porphyrins were investigated by means of several aromaticity indices rooted in the structural, magnetic, and electronic criteria. Overall, our results reveal the predominance of the conjugation pathway that passes through all nitrogen atoms to describe the aromaticity of deprotonated expanded porphyrins, while the outer pathway through the perimeter carbon atoms becomes the most aromatic in protonated macrocycles. In nonplanar and charged macrocycles, a discrepancy between electronic and magnetic descriptors is observed. Two oxoiron(IV) isomers ( R 2a and R 2b) of general formula [Fe IV (O)( R PyNMe 3 )(CH 3 CN)] 2+ are obtained by reaction of their iron(II) precursor with NBu 4 IO 4 . The two isomers differ in the position of the oxo ligand, cis and trans to the pyridine donor. The mechanism of isomerization between R 2a and R 2b has been determined by kinetic and computational analyses uncovering an unprecedented path for interconversion of geometrical oxoiron(IV) isomers. The activity of the two oxoiron(IV) isomers in hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions shows that R 2a reacts one order of magnitude faster than R 2b, which is explained by a repulsive noncovalent interaction between the ligand and the substrate in R 2b. The mechanism and the reactive species involved in the oxidation of alkenes, and alcohols with H 2 O 2 , catalysed by an in situ prepared mixture of a Mn II salt, pyridine-2-carboxylic acid and a ketone is elucidated using substrate competition experiments, kinetic isotope effect (KIE) measurements, and atom tracking with 18 O labelling. The data indicate that a single reactive species engages in the oxidation of both alkenes and alcohols. The primary KIE in the oxidation of benzyl alcohols is ca. 3.5 and shows the reactive species to be selective despite a zero order dependence on substrate concentration, and the high turnover frequencies (up to 30 s -1 ) observed. Scope: Some very-low density lipoprotein (VLDL) properties may render them more pro-atherogenic. We aimed to assess whether a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) or an energy-reduced MedDiet with increased physical activity improves them., Methods and Results: In a sample of the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea (PREDIMED) study, a 1-year intervention with MedDiet with extra-virgin olive oil (n = 89) or nuts (MedDiet-Nuts; n = 79) is compared with a low-fat diet (n = 90). In the PREDIMED-Plus study, a 1-year intervention with energy-reduced MedDiet and physical activity (n = 103) is compared with an ad libitum MedDiet (n = 101). VLDL levels of apolipoprotein C-I, C-III, triglycerides, and cholesterol; the apolipoprotein E-/C-I ratio; and VLDL ex-vivo triglyceride transfer are measured. In PREDIMED participants in both MedDiet groups combined, VLDL apolipoprotein C-III levels are nominally reduced (-0.023 SD units, 95% CI -0.44 to -0.014, p = 0.037). VLDL triglyceride transfer is nominally increased in the MedDiet-Nuts group (+0.39 SD units, 95% CI 0.012-0.78, p = 0.045). In PREDIMED-Plus, no inter-group differences are detected., Conclusions: In older adults at high cardiovascular risk, MedDiet is associated with lower VLDL atherogenicity versus a low-fat diet. Scope: Consumption of meat has been associated with a higher risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), but if plasma metabolite profiles associated with these foods reflect this relationship is unknown. The objective is to identify a metabolite signature of consumption of total meat (TM), red meat (RM), processed red meat (PRM), and fish and examine if they are associated with T2D risk., Methods and Results: The discovery population includes 1833 participants from the PREDIMED trial. The internal validation sample includes 1522 participants with available 1-year follow-up metabolomic data. Associations between metabolites and TM, RM, PRM, and fish are evaluated with elastic net regression. Associations between the profiles and incident T2D are estimated using Cox regressions. The profiles included 72 metabolites for TM, 69 for RM, 74 for PRM, and 66 for fish. After adjusting for T2D risk factors, only profiles of TM (Hazard Ratio (HR): 1.25, 95% CI: 1.06-1.49), RM (HR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.07-1.52), and PRM (HR: 1.27, 95% CI: 1.07-1.51) are associated with T2D., Conclusions: The consumption of TM, its subtypes, and fish is associated with different metabolites, some of which have been previously associated with T2D. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of deaths worldwide and their prevalence is continuously increasing. Available treatments may present several side effects and therefore the development of new safer therapeutics is of interest. Phenolic compounds have shown several cardioprotective properties helpful in reducing different CVD risk factors such as inflammation, elevated blood pressure, hyperlipidemia, or endothelial dysfunction. These factors are significantly influenced by biological rhythms which are in fact emerging as key modulators of important metabolic and physiological processes. Thus, increased events of CVD have been observed under circadian rhythm disruption or in winter versus other seasons. These rhythms can also affect the functionality of phenolic compounds. Indeed, different effects have been observed depending on the administration time or under different photoperiods. Herein, a library of trifluoroethyl substituted aminomaleimide derivatives are reported with small size and enhanced emissions in both solution and solid-state. A diCH 2 CF 3 substituted aminochloromaleimide exhibits the most efficient dual-state emission (Φ f >50 % in solution and solid-state), with reduced quenching from protic solvents. This is attributed to the reduction of electron density on the maleimide ring and suppressed π-π stacking in the solid-state. This mechanism was explored in-depth by crystallographic analysis, and modelling of the electronic distribution of HOMO-LUMO isosurfaces and NCI plots. The formation of supramolecular complexes between C 60 and a molecular nanographene endowed with both positive and negative curvatures is described. The presence of a corannulene moiety and the saddle shape of the molecular nanographene allows the formation of complexes with 1:1, 1:2, and 2:1 stoichiometries. The association constants for the three possible supramolecular complexes were determined by 1 H NMR titration. Furthermore, the stability of the three complexes was calculated by theoretical methods that also predict the photoinduced electron transfer from the curved nanographene to the electron acceptor C 60 . Time-resolved transient absorption measurements on the ns-time scale showed that the addition of C 60 to NG-1 solutions and photo-exciting them at 460 nm leads to the solvent-dependent formation of new species, in particular the formation of the one-electron reduced form of C 60 in benzonitrile was observed., (© 2021 The Authors. Precise delivery of a proton plays a key role in O 2 activation at iron oxygenases, enabling the crucial O-O cleavage step that generates the oxidizing high-valent metal-oxo species. Such a proton is delivered by acidic residues that may either directly bind the iron center or lie in its second coordination sphere. Herein, a supramolecular strategy for enzyme-like H 2 O 2 activation at a biologically inspired manganese catalyst, with a nearly stoichiometric amount (1-1.5 equiv) of a carboxylic acid is disclosed. Key for this strategy is the incorporation of an α,ω-amino acid in the second coordination sphere of a chiral catalyst via remote ammonium-crown ether recognition. The properly positioned carboxylic acid function enables effective activation of hydrogen peroxide, leading to catalytic asymmetric epoxidation. Modulation of both amino acid and catalyst structure can tune the efficiency and the enantioselectivity of the reaction, and a study on the oxidative degradation pathway of the system is presented., (© 2021 The Authors. Predictive catalysis must be the tool that does not replace experiments, but acts as a selective agent, so that synthetic strategies of maximum profitability are used in the laboratory in a surgical way. Here, nanotechnology has been used in olefin metathesis from homogeneous Ru-NHC catalysts, specifically annulating a C 60 fullerene to the NHC ligand. Based on results with the C 60 in the backbone, a sterile change with respect to the catalysis of the metal center, an attempt has been made to bring C 60 closer to the metal, by attaching it to one of the two C-N bonds of the imidazole group of the SIMes (1,3-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)imidazolin-2-ylidene) ligand (reference NHC ligand of the 2 nd generation Grubbs catalysts) to increase the steric pressure of C 60 in the first sphere of reactivity of the metal. Large conjugated rings with persistent currents are novel promising structures in molecular-scale electronics. A six-porphyrin nanoring structure that allegedly sustained an aromatic ring current involving 78π electrons was recently synthesized. We provide here compelling evidence that this molecule is not aromatic, contrary to what was inferred from the analysis of 1 H-NMR data and computational calculations that suffer from large delocalization errors. The main reason behind the absence of an aromatic ring current in these nanorings is the low delocalization in the transition from the porphyrins to the bridging butadiyne linkers, which disrupts the overall conjugated circuit. These results highlight the importance of choosing a suitable computational method to study large conjugated molecules and the appropriate aromaticity descriptors to identify the part of the molecule responsible for the loss of aromaticity., (© 2021 The Authors. A number of non-covalently bound donor-acceptor dyads, consisting of C 60 as the electron acceptor and cycloparaphenylene (CPP) as the electron donor, have been reported. A hypsochromic shift of the charge transfer (CT) band in polar medium has been found in [10]CPP⊃Li + @C 60 . To explore this anomalous effect, we study inclusion complexes [10]CPP⊃Li + @C 60 -MP, [10]CPP⊃C 60 -MPH + , and [10]CPP⊃C 60 -PPyMe + formed by fulleropyrrolidine derivatives and [10]CPP using the DFT/TDDFT approach. We show that the introduction of a positively charged fragment into fullerene stabilizes CT states that become the lowest-lying excited states. These charge-separated states can be generated by the decay of locally excited states on a nanosecond to picosecond time scale. The distance of the charged fragment to the center of the fullerenic cage and its accessibility to the solvent determine the strength of the hypsochromic shift., (© 2021 The Authors. Pro-aromatic molecules have higher-energy diradicaloid states that are significantly influenced by resonance structures in which conjugated rings take on Hückel-aromatic character. Recently, it has been argued that there are also pro-aromatic molecules that adopt central units with 4nπ-electron Baird-aromatic character in the T 1 state, although detailed analysis suggests that these compounds are better labelled as T 1 Hückel-Baird hybrid molecules where Hückel-aromaticity dominates. Herein, we consider a series of symmetrically substituted conjugated rings with potential Baird aromaticity in the lowest excited triplet and singlet states. Our computational results allow us to establish general guidelines for the rational design of molecules with excited state Hückel/Baird aromaticity in pro-aromatic quinoidal compounds. We found two main strategies to promote high Baird aromatic character: 1) anionic and small conjugated rings with electron donating groups as substituents and small exocyclic groups with electron withdrawing substituents, or 2) electron deficient conjugated rings with exocyclic electron-donor substitution., (© 2021 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Photodynamic therapy has been used to treat a variety of diseases, however, there is continuing search for new biocompatible photosensitizers. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time that imidazo[1,2-a]pyrimidine compounds are able to generate singlet oxygen species and can act as photosensitizers in the intracellular environment. Our results show that this class of compounds absorb and emit in the 400-500 nm region, present low cytotoxicity in the dark, are efficiently uptaken by cells, are fluorescent in intracellular medium, and generate singlet oxygen upon irradiation, killing cancer cells within 2 h at low concentration (2.0 μm). Scope: To examine the association between milk and dairy products intake and the prevalence of cognitive decline among Spanish individuals at high cardiovascular risk., Methods and Results: Cross-sectional analyses are performed on baseline data from 6744 adults (aged 55-75 years old). Intake of milk and dairy products is estimated using a food frequency questionnaire grouped into quartiles. The risk of developing cognitive impairment is based on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). A higher prevalence of cognitive decline was found in subjects who consumed more grams. Patients with worse MMSE score (10-24) consumed a mean of 395.14 ± 12.21 g, while patients with better MMSE score (27-30) consumed a mean of 341.23 ± 2.73 g (p < 0.05). Those subjects with the lower milk consumption (<220 g/day) had a higher MMSE score (28.35 ± 0.045). Higher intake of fermented dairy products was observed in participants with a lower MMSE score (OR 1.340, p = 0.003). A positive correlation was found between the consumption of whole milk and the MMSE score (r = 0.066, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: These findings suggest that greater consumption of milk and dairy products could be associated with greater cognitive decline according to MMSE. Oxoiron(IV) complexes bearing tetradentate ligands have been extensively studied as models for the active oxidants in non-heme iron-dependent enzymes. These species are commonly generated by oxidation of their ferrous precursors. The mechanisms of these reactions have seldom been investigated. In this work, the reaction kinetics of complexes [Fe II (CH 3 CN) 2 L](SbF 6 ) 2 ([1](SbF 6 ) 2 and [2](SbF 6 ) 2 ) and [Fe II (CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 L] ([1](OTf) 2 and [2](OTf) 2 (1, L= Me,H Pytacn; 2, L= nP,H Pytacn; R,R' Pytacn=1-[(6-R'-2-pyridyl)methyl]-4,7- di-R-1,4,7-triazacyclononane) with Bu 4 NIO 4 to form the corresponding [Fe IV (O)(CH 3 CN)L] 2+ (3, L= Me,H Pytacn; 4, L= nP,H Pytacn) species was studied in acetonitrile/acetone at low temperatures. The reactions occur in a single kinetic step with activation parameters independent of the nature of the anion and similar to those obtained for the substitution reaction with Cl - as entering ligand, which indicates that formation of [Fe IV (O)(CH 3 CN)L] 2+ is kinetically controlled by substitution in the starting complex to form [Fe II (IO 4 )(CH 3 CN)L] + intermediates that are converted rapidly to oxo complexes 3 and 4. The kinetics of the reaction is strongly dependent on the spin state of the starting complex. A detailed analysis of the magnetic susceptibility and kinetic data for the triflate complexes reveals that the experimental values of the activation parameters for both complexes are the result of partial compensation of the contributions from the thermodynamic parameters for the spin-crossover equilibrium and the activation parameters for substitution. α-Amino acids represent a valuable class of natural products employed as building blocks in biological and chemical synthesis. Because of the limited number of natural amino acids available, and of their widespread application in proteomics, diagnosis, drug delivery and catalysis, there is an increasing demand for the development of procedures for the preparation of modified analogues. Herein, we show that the use of bioinspired manganese catalysts and H 2 O 2 under mild conditions, provides access to modified α-amino acids via γ-C-H bond lactonization. The system can efficiently target 1°, 2° and 3° γ-C-H bonds of α-substituted and achiral α,α-disubstituted α-amino acids with outstanding site-selectivity, good to excellent diastereoselectivity and (where applicable) enantioselectivity. The isolated-pentagon rule (IPR) is a determining structural feature that accounts for hollow fullerene stabilization and properties related to C n (n≥60) cages. The recent characterization of an unprecedented non-IPR hydrofullerene, C 2v C 66 H 4 , bearing two heptagons with adjacent fused-pentagon motifs, largely dismisses this feature. Herein, employing DFT calculations, the 13 C NMR spectroscopy and aromatic behavior of C 2v C 66 H 4 are explored. The results show the presence of three π-aromatic circuits at the bottom boat section of C 66 H 4 , indicating the unique features of this hydrofullerene in comparison to those of pristine C 60 . In addition, under specific orientations of the external field, certain π-aromatic circuits are enabled, resulting in a more aromatic fullerene than that of C 60 , but lower than that of the spherical aromatic C 60 6- fulleride. Notably, under a field aligned with the saturated carbon atoms, nonaromatic characteristics are exposed. Enzyme-powered micro/nanomotors have myriads of potential applications in various areas. To efficiently reach those applications, it is necessary and critical to understand the fundamental aspects affecting the motion dynamics. Herein, we explored the impact of enzyme orientation on the performance of lipase-powered nanomotors by tuning the lipase immobilization strategies. The influence of the lipase orientation and lid conformation on substrate binding and catalysis was analyzed using molecular dynamics simulations. Besides, the motion performance indicates that the hydrophobic binding (via OTES) represents the best orienting strategy, providing 48.4 % and 95.4 % increase in diffusion coefficient compared to hydrophilic binding (via APTES) and Brownian motion (no fuel), respectively (with C [triacetin] of 100 mm). In the last 30 years, fullerene-based materials have become popular building blocks for devices with a broad range of applications. Among fullerene derivatives, endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs, M@C x ) have been widely studied owing to their unique properties and reactivity. For real applications, fullerenes and EMFs must be exohedrally functionalized. It has been shown that encapsulated metal cations facilitate the Diels-Alder reaction in fullerenes. Herein, the Bingel-Hirsch (BH) addition of ethyl bromomalonate over a series of ion-encapsulated M@C 60 (M=Ø, Li + , Na + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , and Cl - ; Ø@C 60 stands for C 60 without any endohedral metal) is quantum mechanically explored to analyze the effect of these ions on the BH addition. The results show that the incarcerated ion has a very important effect on the kinetics and thermodynamics of this reaction. Metalla-bis-dicarbollides, such as the cobalta-bis-dicarbollide (COSAN) anion [Co(C 2 B 9 H 11 ) 2 ] - , have attracted much attention in biology but a deep understanding of their interactions with cell components is still missing. For this purpose, we studied the interactions of COSAN with the glucose moiety, which is ubiquitous at biological interfaces. Octyl-glucopyranoside surfactant (C8G1) was chosen as a model as it self-assembles in water and creates a hydrated glucose-covered interface. At low COSAN content and below the critical micellar concentration (CMC) of C8G1, COSAN binds to C8G1 monomers through the hydrophobic effect. Above the CMC of C8G1, COSAN adsorbs onto C8G1 micelles through the superchaotropic effect. At high COSAN concentrations, COSAN disrupts C8G1 micelles and the assemblies become similar to COSAN micelles but with a small amount of solubilized C8G1. A metal-free C-H allylation strategy is described to access diverse functionalized ortho-allyl-iodoarenes. The method employs hypervalent (diacetoxy)iodoarenes and proceeds through the iodane-guided "iodonio-Claisen" allyl transfer. The use of allylsilanes bearing electron-withdrawing functional groups unlocks the functionalization of a broad range of substrates, including electron-neutral and electron-poor rings. The resulting ortho-allylated iodoarenes are versatile building blocks, with examples of downstream transformation including a concise synthesis of the experimental antimitotic core of Dosabulin. Species with adaptive aromaticity are aromatic in the ground and lowest-lying triplet excited states and they have normally intermediate singlet-triplet gaps. Few examples of compounds with adaptive aromaticity are known to date, including 16-valence-electron (16e) metallapentalenes. A sweeping search could be conducted to discover new members of this group, but efficient designs with an explicit strategy would facilitate the quest for new members of this elusive family. Density functional theory calculations and aromaticity evaluations have been performed to reveal the nature of triplet-state aromaticity in 16e metallapentalenes. Our results show that coordination of strong σ- or π-donor ligands helps achieving adaptive aromaticity of 16e metallapentalenes by means of a spin delocalization mechanism. Scope: To assess whether following a Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) improves atherothrombosis biomarkers in high cardiovascular risk individuals., Methods and Results: In 358 random volunteers from the PREvención con DIeta MEDiterránea trial, the 1-year effects on atherothrombosis markers of an intervention with MedDiet, enriched with virgin olive oil (MedDiet-VOO; n = 120) or nuts (MedDiet-Nuts; n = 119) versus a low-fat control diet (n = 119), and whether large increments in MedDiet adherence (≥3 score points, versus compliance decreases) and intake changes in key food items are associated with 1-year differences in biomarkers. Differences are observed between 1-year changes in the MedDiet-VOO intervention and control diet on the activity of platelet activating factor acetylhydrolase in high-density lipoproteins (HDLs) (+7.5% [95% confidence interval: 0.17; 14.8]) and HDL-bound α 1 -antitrypsin levels (-6.1% [-11.8; -0.29]), and between the MedDiet-Nuts intervention and the control arm on non-esterified fatty acid concentrations (-9.3% [-18.1; -0.53]). Large MedDiet adherence increments are associated with less fibrinogen (-9.5% [-18.3; -0.60]) and non-esterified fatty acid concentrations (-16.7% [-31.7; -1.74]). A triquinoline cationic moiety (TQ⋅H + ) has recently been designed as a novel molecular unit for supramolecular chemistry. In addition to some useful features, TQ⋅H + has strong electron-acceptor properties, which renders the molecular cation a unique element in nanochemistry. TQ⋅H + is found to form complexes with coronene (COR) and cycloparaphenylene (CPP). In this work, we report a computational study of photoinduced electron transfer in supramolecular complexes TQ⋅H + -COR, TQ⋅H + ⊂[12]CPP and (TQ⋅H + -COR)⊂[12]CPP. The electron-transfer rates are estimated by using the semi-classical approach. The results are compared with the data previously obtained for a structurally similar inclusion complex Li + @C 60 ⊂[10]CPP. In particular, we found a red solvatochromic shift for charge-shift bands in the TQ⋅H + -complexes unlike a blueshift showed by Li + @C 60 ⊂[10]CPP. However, prediction (and control) of reaction selectivity is usually challenging, especially for complex substrate structures and elusive transformations such as remote C(sp 3 )-H oxidation, as it requires distinguishing a specific C-H bond from many others with similar reactivity. Developed here is a strategy for predictable, remote C-H oxidation that entails substrate binding to a supramolecular Mn or Fe catalyst followed by elucidation of the conformation of the host-guest adduct by NMR analysis. These analyses indicate which remote C-H bonds are suitably oriented for the oxidation before carrying out the reaction, enabling prediction of site selectivity.
