Photoresponsive DNA nanomaterials represent a new class of remarkable functional materials. By adjusting the irradiation wavelength, light intensity, and exposure time, various photocontrolled DNA-based systems can be reversibly or irreversibly regulated in respect of their size, shape, conformation, movement, and dissociation/association. This Review introduces the most updated progress in the development of photoresponsive DNA-based system and emphasizes their advantages over other stimuli-responsive systems. Their design and mechanisms to trigger the photoresponses are shown and discussed. The potential application of these photon-responsive DNA nanomaterials in biology, biomedicine, materials science, nanophotonic and nanoelectronic are also covered and described. The kinetics of water oxidation by K 2 FeO 4 has been reinvestigated by UV/Vis spectrophotometry from pH 7-9 in 0.2 m phosphate buffer. The rate of reaction was found to be second-order in both [FeO 4 2- ] and [H + ]. These results are consistent with a proposed mechanism in which the first step involves the initial equilibrium protonation of FeO 4 2- to give FeO 3 (OH) - , which then undergoes rate-limiting O-O bond formation. Analysis of the O 2 isotopic composition for the reaction in H 2 18 O suggests that the predominant pathway for water oxidation by ferrate is intramolecular O-O coupling. Scope: We have previously shown that loss of miR-140 has a pro-fibrotic effect in the mammary gland. This study aims to investigate whether miR-140 loss and obesity act synergistically to promote non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and to identify the underlying mechanisms., Methods and Results: Liver tissues were isolated from lean-fat-diet and high-fat-diet fed wild-type and miR-140 knockout mice. Using molecular staining and immunohistochemistry techniques, increased development of NAFLD and fibrotic indicators in miR-140 knockout mice were identified. Utilizing an in vitro model system, miR-140 was demonstrated to target TLR-4, and miR-140 overexpression was shown to be sufficient to inhibit palmitic acid signaling through the TLR-4/NFκB pathway., Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that loss of miR-140 results in increased expression of TLR-4, sensitizing cells to palmitic acid signaling and in increased inflammatory activity through the TLR4/NFκB pathway. This study reports biosensing using graphene field-effect transistors with the aid of pyrene-tagged DNA aptamers, which exhibit excellent selectivity, affinity, and stability for Escherichia coli (E. coli) detection. The aptamer is employed as the sensing probe due to its advantages such as high stability and high affinity toward small molecules and even whole cells. The change of the carrier density in the probe-modified graphene due to the attachment of E. coli is discussed theoretically for the first time and also verified experimentally. The conformational change of the aptamer due to the binding of E. coli brings the negatively charged E. coli close to the graphene surface, increasing the hole carrier density efficiently in graphene and achieving electrical detection. The binding of negatively charged E. coli induces holes in graphene, which are pumped into the graphene channel from the contact electrodes. The carrier mobility, which correlates the gate voltage to the electrical signal of the APG-FETs, is analyzed and optimized here. The excellent sensing performance such as low detection limit, high sensitivity, outstanding selectivity and stability of the graphene biosensor for E. coli detection paves the way to develop graphene biosensors for bacterial detection., (© 2017 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The Os VI nitrido complex, Os VI (N)(quin) 2 (OTs) (1, quin=2-quinaldinate, OTs=tosylate), is a highly selective and efficient catalyst for the ring hydroxylation of alkylbenzenes with H 2 O 2 at room temperature. Oxidation of various alkylbenzenes occurs with ring/chain oxidation ratios ranging from 96.7/3.3 to 99.9/0.1, and total product yields from 93 % to 98 %. Moreover, turnover numbers up to 6360, 5670, and 3880 can be achieved for the oxidation of p-xylene, ethylbenzene, and mesitylene, respectively. Stimuli-responsive DNA-based materials represent a major class of remarkable functional nanomaterials for nano-biotechnological applications. In this review, recent progress in the development of stimuli-responsive systems based on self-assembled DNA nanostructures is introduced and classified. Representative examples are presented in terms of their design, working principles and mechanisms to trigger the response of the stimuli-responsive DNA system upon expose to a large variety of stimuli including pH, metal ions, oligonucleotides, small molecules, enzymes, heat, and light. Substantial in vitro studies have clearly revealed the advantages of the use of stimuli-responsive DNA nanomaterials in different biomedical applications, particularly for biosensing, drug delivery, therapy and diagnostic purposes in addition to bio-computing. Although FeO4(2-) (ferrate(IV)) is a very strong oxidant that readily oxidizes water in acidic medium, at pH 9-10 it is relatively stable (<2 % decomposition after 1 h at 298 K). However, FeO4(2-) is readily activated by Ca(2+) at pH 9-10 to generate O2. The reaction has the following rate law: d[O2]/dt=kCa [Ca(2+) ][FeO4(2-)](2). (18)O-labeling experiments show that both O atoms in O2 come from FeO4(2-). These results together with DFT calculations suggest that the function of Ca(2+) is to facilitate O-O coupling between two FeO4 (2-) ions by bridging them together. The first example of mitochondrial delivery of the anticancer drug doxorubicin (Dox) is presented by lipid-functionalized DNA nanocages (LNCs). Dox localized in mitochondria induces significant cytotoxicity and cellular apoptosis in MCF-7 compared with Dox localized in lysosomes. We demonstrate the use of two different wavelength ranges of excitation light as inputs to remotely trigger the responses of the self-assembled DNA devices (D-OR). As an important feature of this device, the dependence of the readout fluorescent signals on the two external inputs, UV excitation for 1 min and/or near infrared irradiation (NIR) at 800 nm fs laser pulses, can mimic function of signal communication in OR logic gates. Their operations could be reset easily to its initial state. Furthermore, these DNA devices exhibit efficient cellular uptake, low cytotoxicity, and high bio-stability in different cell lines. They are considered as the first example of a photo-responsive DNA logic gate system, as well as a biocompatible, multi-wavelength excited system in response to UV and NIR. Exploring new reactivity of metal nitrides is of great interest because it can give insights to N2 fixation chemistry and provide new methods for nitrogenation of organic substrates. In this work, reaction of a (salen)ruthenium(VI) nitrido complex with various alkynes results in the formation of novel (salen)ruthenium(III) imine complexes. Kinetic and computational studies suggest that the reactions go through an initial ruthenium(IV) aziro intermediate, followed by addition of nucleophiles to give the (salen)ruthenium(III) imine complexes. Peptide-functionalized DNA nano-objects selectively target mitochondria and the nucleus by means of nanoneedle-assisted delivery. This technology preserves the cell viability and structural integrity of nanostructures and assists the nano-objects in escaping degradation by endocytosis. Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) overexpression leads to mammary tumorigenesis and its elevated levels lead to increase in cancer stem cells (CSCs), invasion, and metastasis. CSCs are resistant to radiation/chemotherapeutic drugs and are believed to be responsible for recurrence/relapse of cancer. CSCs are isolated using flow cytometry based sorting, although reliable, this technology hinders the convenient identification of molecular targets of CSCs. Therefore to understand the molecular players of increased CSC through HER2 overexpression and to develop meaningful targets for combination therapy, we isolated and characterized breast CSCs through convenient tumorsphere culture. We identified the altered protein expression in CSC as compared to non-CSC using LC-MS/MS and confirmed those results using qRT-PCR and Western blotting. Ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1) was identified as a candidate gene, which is involved in iron metabolism and iron depletion significantly decreased the self-renewal of CSCs. We further performed in silico analysis of altered genes in tumorsphere and identified a set of genes (PTMA, S100A4, S100A6, TNXRD1, COX-1, COX-2, KRT14, and FTH1), representing possible molecular targets, which in combination showed a promise to be used as prognostic markers for breast cancer., (© 2012 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
