A rapidly growing interest in organic bioelectronic applications has spurred the development of a wide variety of organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors. While these new mixed conductors have enabled the community to interface organic electronics with biological systems and efficiently transduce biological signals (ions) into electronic signals, the current materials selection does not offer sufficient selectivity towards specific ions of biological relevance without the use of auxiliary components such as ion-selective membranes. Here, we present the molecular design of an n-type (electron-transporting) perylene diimide semiconductor material decorated with pendant oligoether groups to facilitate interactions with cations such as Na + and K + . Using the cyclic 15-crown-5 oligoether motif, we find that the resulting mixed conductor PDI-crown displays a strong dependence on the size of the electrolyte cation when tested in an organic electrochemical transistor configuration. In stark contrast to the low current response on the order of 1 μA observed with aqueous sodium chloride, a nearly 200-fold increase in current is observed with aqueous potassium chloride. We ascribe the high selectivity to extended molecular aggregation and therefore efficient charge transport in the presence of K + due to a favourable sandwich-like structure between two adjacent 15-crown-5 motifs and the potassium ion., (© 2024 The Authors. The charge transport of crystalline organic semiconductors is limited by dynamic disorder that tends to localize charges. It is the main hurdle to overcome in order to significantly increase charge carrier mobility. An innovative design that combines a chemical structure based on sulfur-rich thienoacene with a solid-state herringbone (HB) packing is proposed and the synthesis, physicochemical characterization, and charge transport properties of two new thienoacenes bearing a central tetrathienyl core fused with two external naphthyl rings: naphtho[2,3-b]thieno-[2''',3''':4'',5'']thieno[2″,3″:4',5']thieno[3',2'-b]naphtho[2,3-b]thiophene (DN4T) and naphtho[1,2-b]thieno-[2''',3''':4'',5'']thieno[2'',3'':4',5']thieno[3',2'-b]naphtho[1,2-b]thiophene are presented. Both compounds crystallize with a HB pattern structure and present transfer integrals ranging from 33 to 99 meV (for the former) within the HB plane of charge transport. Molecular dynamics simulations point toward an efficient resilience of the transfer integrals to the intermolecular sliding motion commonly responsible for strong variations of the electronic coupling in the crystal. Best device performances are reached with DN4T with hole mobility up to μ = 2.1 cm 2 V -1 s -1 in polycrystalline organic field effect transistors, showing the effectiveness of the electronic coupling enabled by the new aromatic core. These promising results pave the way to the design of high-performing materials based on this new thienoacene, notably through the introduction of alkyl side-chains., (© 2022 The Authors. Molecular doping-the use of redox-active small molecules as dopants for organic semiconductors-has seen a surge in research interest driven by emerging applications in sensing, bioelectronics, and thermoelectrics. However, molecular doping carries with it several intrinsic problems stemming directly from the redox-active character of these materials. A recent breakthrough was a doping technique based on ion-exchange, which separates the redox and charge compensation steps of the doping process. Here, the equilibrium and kinetics of ion exchange doping in a model system, poly(2,5-bis(3-alkylthiophen-2-yl)thieno(3,2-b)thiophene) (PBTTT) doped with FeCl 3 and an ionic liquid, is studied, reaching conductivities in excess of 1000 S cm -1 and ion exchange efficiencies above 99%. Several factors that enable such high performance, including the choice of acetonitrile as the doping solvent, which largely eliminates electrolyte association effects and dramatically increases the doping strength of FeCl 3 , are demonstrated. In this high ion exchange efficiency regime, a simple connection between electrochemical doping and ion exchange is illustrated, and it is shown that the performance and stability of highly doped PBTTT is ultimately limited by intrinsically poor stability at high redox potential., (© 2021 The Authors. While the charge transport properties of organic semiconductors have been extensively studied over the recent years, the field of organics-based thermoelectrics is still limited by a lack of experimental data on thermal transport and of understanding of the associated structure-property relationships. To fill this gap, a comprehensive experimental and theoretical investigation of the lattice thermal conductivity in polycrystalline thin films of dinaphtho[2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene (Cn-DNTT-Cn with n = 0, 8) semiconductors is reported. Strikingly, thermal conductivity appears to be much more isotropic than charge transport, which is confined to the 2D molecular layers. A direct comparison between experimental measurements (3ω-Völklein method) and theoretical estimations (approach-to-equilibrium molecular dynamics (AEMD) method) indicates that the in-plane thermal conductivity is strongly reduced in the presence of the long terminal alkyl chains. This evolution can be rationalized by the strong localization of the intermolecular vibrational modes in C8-DNTT-C8 in comparison to unsubstituted DNTT cores, as evidenced by a vibrational mode analysis. Combined with the enhanced charge transport properties of alkylated DNTT systems, this opens the possibility to decouple electron and phonon transport in these materials, which provides great potential for enhancing the thermoelectric figure of merit ZT., (© 2021 The Authors. Charge transport in organic semiconductors is notoriously extremely sensitive to the presence of disorder, both internal and external (i.e., related to interactions with the dielectric layer), especially for n-type materials. Internal dynamic disorder stems from large thermal fluctuations both in intermolecular transfer integrals and (molecular) site energies in weakly interacting van der Waals solids and sources transient localization of the charge carriers. The molecular vibrations that drive transient localization typically operate at low-frequency (-1 ), which makes it difficult to assess them experimentally. Hitherto, this has prevented the identification of clear molecular design rules to control and reduce dynamic disorder. In addition, the disorder can also be external, being controlled by the gate insulator dielectric properties. Here a comprehensive study of charge transport in two closely related n-type molecular organic semiconductors using a combination of temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering and photoelectron spectroscopy corroborated by electrical measurements, theory, and simulations is reported. The molecular properties of [1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (BTBT) are vulnerable to structural modifications, which in turn are determined by the functionalization of the backbone. Hence versatile synthetic strategies are needed to discover the properties of this molecule. To address this, we have attempted heteroatom (oxygen) functionalization of BTBT by a concise and easily scalable synthesis. Fourfold hydroxy-substituted BTBT is the key intermediate, from which the compounds 2,3,7,8-bis(ethylenedioxy)-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene and 2,3,7,8-bis(methylenedioxy)-[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene are synthesized. The difference in ether functionalities on the BTBT scaffold influences the ionisation potential values substantially. The crystal structure reveals the transformation of the herringbone motif in bare BTBT towards π-stacked columns in the newly synthesized derivatives. The structural and electronic properties of four isomers of didodecyl[1]-benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene (C12-BTBT) have been investigated. Results show the strong impact of the molecular packing on charge carrier transport and electronic polarization properties. Field-induced time-resolved microwave conductivity measurements unravel an unprecedented high average interfacial mobility of 170 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) for the 2,7-isomer, holding great promise for the field of organic electronics., (© 2016 The Authors. Host-guest complexes are formed by the creation of multiple noncovalent bonds between a large molecule (the host) and smaller molecule(s) or ion(s) (the guest(s)). Ion-mobility separation coupled with mass spectrometry nowadays represents an ideal tool to assess whether the host-guest complexes, when transferred to the gas phase upon electrospray ionization, possess an exclusion or inclusion nature. Nevertheless, the influence of the solution conditions on the nature of the observed gas-phase ions is often not considered. In the specific case of inclusion complexes, kinetic considerations must be taken into account beside thermodynamics; the guest ingression within the host cavity can be characterized by slow kinetics, which makes the complexation reaction kinetically driven on the timescale of the experiment. This is particularly the case for the cucurbituril family of macrocyclic host molecules. Herein, we selected para-phenylenediamine and cucurbit[6]uril as a model system to demonstrate, by means of ion mobility and collision-induced dissociation measurements, that the inclusion/exclusion topology ratio varies as a function of the equilibration time in solution prior to the electrospray process., (© 2016 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. A series of bulky end-capped [1]benzothieno[3,2-b]benzothiophenes (BTBTs) are developed in order to tune the packing structure via terminal substitution. A coupled theoretical and experimental study allows us to identify 2,7-di-tert-butylBTBT as a new high-performance organic semiconductor with large and well-balanced transfer integrals, as evidenced by quantum-chemical calculations. The structural organization of three different families of semicrystalline π-conjugated polymers is reported (poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-alkyl-4H-cyclopenta-[2,1-b;3,4-b0]-dithiophene)-alt-4,7-(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)](cyclopentadithiophene-benzothiadiazole) (CDT-BTZ) and poly(N,N"-bis-2-octyldodecylnaphtalene-1,4,5,8-bis-dicarboximide-2,6-diyl-alt-5,5-2,2-bithiophene (P(NDI2OD-T2))). These have triggered significant interest for their remarkable charge-transport properties. By performing molecular mechanics/dynamics simulations with carefully re-parameterized force fields, it is illustrated in particular how the supramolecular organization of these conjugated polymers is driven by an interplay between the length and nature of the conjugated monomer unit and the packing of their alkyl side chains, and to what extent it impacts the charge-carrier mobility, as monitored by quantum-chemical calculations of the intermolecular hopping transfer integrals. Noncovalent interactions between several protonated amines and an original ditopic receptor, nor-seco-cucurbit[10]uril, are investigated by combining mass spectrometry-based methods and computational chemistry. Electrospray ionization is used to transfer the intact supramolecular assemblies from their acidic solution to the gas phase, provided fine-tuning of the source parameters is achieved. Ternary complexes, associating two guest molecules and one host cavity, are observed systematically in the mass spectrometry analyses and the quasi-exclusive occurrence of these 2:1 associations reveals the allosteric nature of the complexation reaction. It is demonstrated that the binary 1:1 complex ions that are detected arise from collision-induced dissociation processes undergone by the ternary complex ions inside the ion source. Based on ion mobility experiments supported by theoretical calculations, the inclusion nature of the gas-phase ternary complexes is clearly evidenced independent of the size of the probed guest molecule and the charge state of the complex ions. The allosteric nature of the complexation reactions is dictated by size criteria. This is demonstrated on the basis of mass spectrometry experiments by analyzing solutions containing ligands of different sizes in competition for inclusion within the guest cavity. Molecular modeling shows that longitudinal displacement of the backbones by a couple of ångströms has a profound impact on the electronic coupling mediating charge transport in a conjugated copolymer. Ion mobility spectrometry coupled with mass spectrometry was used to experimentally determine the three-dimensional structure of multiply charged sodium cationized polylactides (PLA). In particular, the experiments were conducted to evaluate the influence of the charge state and the size on the gas-phase conformation of cationized PLA. The measured collision cross sections were then compared to calculated values obtained by computational chemistry methods. The most striking feature was the experimental and theoretical observation of a breaking point in the quasilinear relationship between the average collision cross sections and the number of monomer units for the triply charged cations. This breaking point was theoretically demonstrated, for the doubly and triply charged cations, to be associated with a significant folding of the polymer chains around the cationizing agents. The occurrence of such breaking points could be exploited to correlate the charge state of the most intense ion series observed upon electrospray ionization with the number-average molecular mass of a polymer., (Copyright © 2011 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Hexaazatrinaphthylene (HATNA) derivatives with six alkylsulfanyl chains of different length (hexyl, octyl, decyl and dodecyl) have been designed to obtain new potential electron-carrier materials. The electron-deficient nature of these compounds has been demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry. Their thermotropic behaviour has been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry and polarised optical microscopy. The supramolecular organisation of these discotic molecules has been explored by temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction on powders and oriented samples. In addition to various liquid crystalline columnar phases (Col(hd), Col(rd)), an anisotropic plastic crystal phase is demonstrated to exist. The charge-carrier mobilities have been measured with the pulse-radiolysis time-resolved microwave-conductivity technique. They are found to be higher in the crystalline than in the liquid crystalline phases, with maximum values of approximately 0.9 and 0.3 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1), respectively, for the decylsulfanyl derivative. Mobilities strongly depend on the nature of the side chains.
