The synthesis of supported multielement transition metal phosphides (TMPs) to exploit the synergistic interplay between electronic and geometric effects resulting from the presence of different metals in the material and the arrangement of heterogeneous atoms is pivotal for reducing metal content while offering multiple active sites. However, the integration of Ni, Co, and P, for example, into a nanostructured carbon network to develop self‐supporting NixCoyP bimetallic phosphides is limited by several factors, including the synthesis and the discrepancy between the crystal structure of the respective monometallic phosphides. Moreover, conventional synthesis of supported TMPs often separates nanoparticles, support and phosphidation steps, which do not allow tailoring of physical and catalytic properties via particle support, electronic and geometric interactions. Herein, an innovative solid‐state, ex situ phosphidation‐free approach tailored to synthesize a library of self‐supporting NixCoyP TMPs in N,S,P‐modified nanostructured carbon networks generated together with NixCoyP particles is presented. Extensive multivariate characterization validates the unique properties of NixCoyP bimetallic materials with enhanced electrocatalytic performance for the hydrogen evolution reaction and the selective electroconversion of biomass‐derived 5‐hydroxymethylfurfural (5‐HMF) to value‐added 2,5‐furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) with 90–100% Faradaic efficiency. Overall, the synthesis expands the possibilities for tailoring the microstructure of supported TMPs for improved physical/catalytic properties.

Environmental and energy concerns surrounding the use of fossil fuels are driving an increasingly rapid transition to sustainable and eco‐responsible processes. Electrochemical processes can provide the necessary sustainability and economic roadmap for storing intermittent and renewable electricity by synthesizing, in cogeneration electrolyzers, energy carriers and/or synthetic chemicals (hydrogen, ammonia, etc.) via flagship reduction reactions (hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR), etc.). To balance the electrochemical process, these cathodic processes have long been coupled to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which ultimately consumes almost 90% of the energy input. Recent years have witnessed an overwhelming development of anode scenarios based on biomass substrates, because OER cannot be driven below a certain potential threshold, while organics are thermodynamically more favorable. Therefore, paired electrolysis, which refers to cases where electrochemical oxidation and reduction are desired, embraces the electrocatalysis community for the electrolytic production of hydrogen, ammonia, etc. (cathode side), in parallel with value‐added chemicals (anode side), all with a modest electricity input. The trade‐off is selectivity at relevant current densities. This review discusses, the progress, challenges, and potential of biomass‐fueled paired electrosynthesis of valuable chemicals and fuels. Fundamental principles, main biomass solubilization methods, and different scenarios for paired electrosynthesis are presented.

Abstract The synthesis of catalytic materials containing active sites of various oxidation states (metal, oxide, etc.) for the dual use in reduction and oxidation reactions remains challenging because most of the reported methods for the metallic state are often incompatible with those for the oxide state. A new methodology is reported for the synthesis of a library of bimetallic metal‐oxide materials containing three crystalline phases Ir‐Ru‐IrxRu1‐xO2 by combining the calcination under air and the polymerization of aniline in the presence of IrCl3 and RuCl3 precursors. Morphology, structure, and surface oxidation state studies (XRD, SEM/EDX, S/TEM, XPS) confirm the hypothesis that IrCl3 evolves to Ir while RuCl3 evolves to RuO2 during the calcination under air. An Ir:Ru atomic ratio of 50:50 can be converted into a heterogeneous nanostructure composed of Ir, Ru, and IrxRu1‐xO2 to date, with remarkable catalytic activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with a small overpotential of 40 mV and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with a small overpotential of 290 mV at the metric current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 m H2SO4. The results can serve as a platform for the development of efficient multifunctional materials for practical use in both catalytic oxidation and reduction reactions.

Abstract Glycerol is a cheap, non‐toxic, and renewable by‐product of the rapid expansion of biodiesel and soap producers around the world. Glycerol electroforming is a method of oxidizing glycerol into valuable chemicals of interest to the pharmaceutical, cosmetics, polymer, and food industries. One of the technologies that have been studied over the past decades is to couple glycerol oxidation with the production of pure hydrogen in an electrolysis cell (so‐called electrolyzer), which has shown the advantage of consuming a much lower theoretical amount of electricity than conventional water electrolysis. The efficiency of this device is influenced by the nature, structure, and composition of the electrode material. This mini‐review concerns the understanding of glycerol electro‐oxidation, a brief state of the art of nanomaterials currently used to prepare electrode materials, and some results concerning the performance of electrolyzers in alkaline conditions that combine the efficient production of value‐added chemicals and hydrogen.

Abstract Investigations focusing on electrical energy storage capacitors especially the dielectric ceramic capacitors for high energy storage density are attracting more and more attention in the recent years. Ceramic capacitors possess a faster charge‐discharge rate and improved mechanical and thermal properties compared with other energy storage devices such as batteries. The challenge is to obtain ceramic capacitors with outstanding mechanical, thermal and storage properties over large temperature and frequencies ranges. ABO3 as a type of perovskites showed a strong piezoelectric, dielectric, pyroelectric, and electro‐optic properties useful as energy storage and environmental devices. CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) perovskite with cubic lattice (Im3 symmetry) was discovered to have a colossal dielectric constant (104) that is stable over a wide range of frequencies (10 Hz–1 MHz) and temperature independence (100–300 K). The origin of this high dielectric constant is not fully established, specially because it is the same for single crystal and thin films. In this review, the history of CCTO will be introduced. The synthesis and the sintering approaches, the dopant elements used as well as the applications of CCTO will be reported. In addition to dielectrical properties useful to energy storage devices; CCTO could serve as photocatalytic materials with a very good performance in visible light.
