β-Branched chiral amines with contiguous stereocenters are valuable building blocks for preparing various biologically active molecules. However, their asymmetric synthesis remains challenging. Herein, we report a highly diastereo- and enantioselective biocatalytic approach for preparing a broad range of β-branched chiral amines starting from their corresponding racemic ketones. This involves a dynamic kinetic resolution-asymmetric reductive amination process catalyzed using only an imine reductase. Four rounds of protein engineering endowed wild-type PocIRED with higher reactivity, better stereoselectivity, and a broader substrate scope. Using the engineered enzyme, various chiral amine products were synthesized with up to >99.9 % ee, >99 : 1 dr, and >99 % conversion. The practicability of the developed biocatalytic method was confirmed by producing a key intermediate of tofacitinib in 74 % yield, >99.9 % ee, and 98 : 2 dr at a challenging substrate loading of 110 g L -1 . Photocatalytic syngas (CO and H 2 ) production with CO 2 as gas source not only ameliorates greenhouse effect, but also produces valuable chemical feedstocks. However, traditional photocatalytic systems require noble metal or suffers from low yield. Here, we demonstrate that S vacancies ZnIn 2 S 4 (V S -ZnIn 2 S 4 ) nanosheets are an ideal photocatalyst to drive CO 2 reduction into syngas. It is found that building S vacancies can endow ZnIn 2 S 4 with stronger photoabsorption, efficient electron-hole separation, and larger CO 2 adsorption, finally promoting both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR). The syngas yield of CO and H 2 is therefore significantly increased. In contrast to pristine ZnIn 2 S 4 , the syngas yield over V S -ZnIn 2 S 4 can be improved by roughly ≈4.73 times and the CO/H 2 ratio is modified from 1:4.18 to 1:1. Total amount of syngas after 12 h photocatalysis is as high as 63.20 mmol g -1 without use of any noble metals, which is even higher than those of traditional noble metal-based catalysts in the reported literatures. Security inks based on photoluminescent materials are mostly investigated for security applications, such as information encryption and decryption, anti-counterfeiting, and data storage. Although they are invisible to the naked eye under ambient light, they can be detected under ultraviolet or near-infrared light. Herein, a new kind of secret paper made from network-structured ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires and cellulose fibers has been developed. White vinegar, a common cooking ingredient, is used as an invisible security ink. Covert information on the secret paper written with white vinegar is totally invisible under natural light, but it can be decrypted and clearly read after exposure to fire; the response time to fire is short (<10 s). In vivo mineralization is a multistep process involving mineral-protein complexes and various metastable compounds in vertebrates. In this complex process, the minerals produced in the mitochondrial matrix play a critical role in initiating extracellular mineralization. However, the functional mechanisms of the mitochondrial minerals are still a mystery. Herein, an in vitro enzymatic reaction strategy is reported for the generation of biomimic amorphous calcium phosphate (EACP) nanominerals by an alkaline phosphatase (ALP)-catalyzed hydrolysis of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in a weakly alkalescent aqueous condition (pH 8.0-8.5), which is partially similar to the mitochondrial environment. Significantly, the EACP nanomineral obviously promotes autophagy and osteogenic differentiation of human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells by activating an AMPK related pathway, and displays a high performance in promoting bone regeneration. These results provide in vitro evidence for the effect of ATP on the formation and stabilization of the mineral in the mineralization process, demonstrating a potential strategy for the preparation of the biomimic mineral for treating bone related diseases., (© 2018 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Efficient utilization of abundant solar energy for clean water generation is considered a sustainable and environment friendly approach to mitigate the global water crisis. For this purpose, this study reports a flexible fire-resistant photothermal paper by combining carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and fire-resistant inorganic paper based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires (HNs) for efficient solar energy-driven water steam generation and water purification. Benefiting from the structural characteristics of the HN/CNT photothermal paper, the black CNT surface layer exhibits a high light absorbability and photothermal conversion capability, the HN-based inorganic paper acts as a thermal insulator with a high temperature stability, low thermal conductivity, and interconnected porous structure. By combining these advantages, high water evaporation efficiencies of 83.2% at 1 kW m -2 and 92.8% at 10 kW m -2 are achieved. In addition, the HN/CNT photothermal paper has a stable water evaporation capability during recycling and long-time usage. The promising potential of the HN/CNT photothermal paper for efficient production of drinkable water from both actual seawater and simulative wastewater samples containing heavy metal ions, dyes, and bacteria is also demonstrated. To date, the scaled-up production and large-area applications of superhydrophobic coatings are limited because of complicated procedures, environmentally harmful fluorinated compounds, restrictive substrates, expensive equipment, and raw materials usually involved in the fabrication process. Herein, the facile, low-cost, and green production of superhydrophobic coatings based on hydroxyapatite nanowire bundles (HNBs) is reported. Hydrophobic HNBs are synthesised by using a one-step solvothermal method with oleic acid as the structure-directing and hydrophobic agent. During the reaction process, highly hydrophobic C-H groups of oleic acid molecules can be attached in situ to the surface of HNBs through the chelate interaction between Ca 2+ ions and carboxylic groups. This facile synthetic method allows the scaled-up production of HNBs up to about 8 L, which is the largest production scale of superhydrophobic paint based on HNBs ever reported. In addition, the design of the 100 L reaction system is also shown. The HNBs can be coated on any substrate with an arbitrary shape by the spray-coating technique. The self-cleaning ability in air and oil, high-temperature stability, and excellent mechanical durability of the as-prepared superhydrophobic coatings are demonstrated. A novel method for the highly efficient and reversible capture of CO in carbanion-functionalized ionic liquids (ILs) by a C-site interaction is reported. Because of its supernucleophilicity, the carbanion in ILs could absorb CO efficiently. As a result, a relatively high absorption capacity for CO (up to 0.046 mol mol -1 ) was achieved under ambient conditions, compared with CO solubility in a commonly used IL [Bmim][Tf 2 N] (2×10 -3  mol mol -1 ). The results of quantum mechanical calculations and spectroscopic investigation confirmed that the chemical interaction between the C-site in the carbanion and CO resulted in the superior CO absorption capacities. Furthermore, the subsequent conversion of captured CO into valuable chemicals with good reactivity was also realized through the alkoxycarbonylation reaction under mild conditions. The templated synthesis of hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires@metal-organic framework (MOF) core/shell nanofibers (named HAP@MIL-100(Fe) nanofibers) is demonstrated. The ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires are adopted as a hard template for the nucleation and growth of MIL-100(Fe) (a typical MOF) through the layer-by-layer method. The Coulombic and chelation interactions between Ca 2+ ions on the surface of the HAP nanowires and the COO - organic linkers of MIL-100(Fe) play key roles in the formation process. The as-prepared, water-stable HAP@MIL-100(Fe) nanofibers exhibit peroxidase-like activity toward the oxidation of different peroxidase substrates in the presence of H 2 O 2 , accompanied by a clear color change of the solution. Furthermore, a flexible, recyclable HAP@MIL-100(Fe) test paper is prepared successfully by using HAP@MIL-100(Fe) nanofibers as building blocks. A simple, low-cost, and sensitive colorimetric method for the detection of H 2 O 2 and glucose is established based on the as-prepared, flexible, recyclable HAP@MIL-100(Fe) test paper. More importantly, the HAP@MIL-100(Fe) test paper can be recovered easily for reuse by simply dipping in absolute ethanol for just 30 min, thus showing excellent recyclability. With its combination of advantages such as easy transportation, easy storage and use, rapid recyclability, light weight, and high flexibility, this HAP@MIL-100(Fe) test paper is promising for wide applications in various fields., (© 2017 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The promise of DNA vaccines is far-reaching. However, the development of potent immunization methods remains a key challenge for its use in clinical applications. Here, an approach for in vivo DNA vaccination by electrically activated plasmonic Au nanoparticles is reported. The electrical excitation of plasmonic nanoparticles can drive vibrational and dipole-like oscillations that are able to disrupt nearby cell membranes. In combination with their intrinsic ability to focus and magnify the electric field on the surface of cells, Au nanoparticles allow enhanced cell poration and facilitate the uptake of DNA vaccine. Mice immunized with this approach showed up to 100-fold higher gene expression compared to control treatments (without nanoparticles) and exhibited significantly increased levels of both antibody and cellular immune responses against a model hepatitis C virus DNA vaccine. This approach can be tuned to establish controlled and targeted delivery of different types of therapeutic molecules into cells and live animals as well.

A highly flexible and free-standing paper with high antibacterial activity made from silver nanoparticle (AgNP)-decorated ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAPNWs) is reported. The HAPNWs@AgNPs nanocomposites were obtained from a facile one-step solvothermal process and utilized for the construction of highly flexible and free-standing inorganic paper through a simple vacuum-filtration procedure. The structure and properties of the HAPNWs@AgNPs paper were characterized in detail. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) micrographs show that AgNPs are highly dispersed and stabilized in the nanocomposite and exhibit a narrow particle size distribution. The effects of the concentration of silver nitrate, solvothermal temperature and time on the product were systematically investigated. This method is simple, convenient and reproducible. The as-prepared HAPNWs@AgNPs paper shows long-time sustained silver-ion release, high antibacterial activity against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, and good biocompatibility. A new strategy for multi-molar absorption of CO2 is reported based on activating a carboxylate group in amino acid ionic liquids. It was illustrated that introducing an electron-withdrawing site to amino acid anions could reduce the negative inductive effect of the amino group while simultaneously activating the carboxylate group to interact with CO2 very efficiently. An extremely high absorption capacity of CO2 (up to 1.69 mol mol(-1) ) in aminopolycarboxylate-based amino acid ionic liquids was thus achieved. X-ray microtomography and serial block face scanning electron microscopy are used to reveal independent clusters of inorganic particles embedded within a polymer. These clusters are interpenetrating, of varying size, and have fractal dimensions that strongly influence transport and structure-property relations. Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) had been prepared by precipitation polymerization method using acrylamide as the functional monomer, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker, acetonitrile as the porogen solvent and protocatechuic acid (PA), one of phenolic acids, as the template molecule. The MIPs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared, and their performance relative to non-imprinted polymers was assessed by equilibrium binding experiments. Six structurally similar phenolic acids, including p-hydroxybenzoic acid, gallic acid, salicylic acid, syringic acid, vanillic acid, ferulic acid were selected to assess the selectivity and recognition capability of the MIPs. The MIPs were applied to extract PA from the traditional Chinese medicines as a solid-phase extraction sorbent. The resultant cartridge showed that the MIPs have a good extraction performance and were able to selectively extract almost 82% of PA from the extract of Rhizoma homalomenae. A novel ultra-performance LC-photodiode array-el-ESI-MS/MS screening method was developed for the detection and identification of natural antioxidants from radix et rhizoma Rhei. Nine compounds were found to possess a potential antioxidant activity, and their free radical-scavenging capacities were investigated in detail. The nine compounds were identified as 1-O-galloyl-2-O-cinnamoylglucose, 6-hydroxymusizin-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, (+)-catechin, gallic acid 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside, trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene- 4'-O-β-D-(2"-O-galloyl)-glucopyranoside, sennoside A, 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-2- butanone-4'-O-β-D-(2"-O-galloyl-6"-O-p-coumaroyl) glucopyranoside, emodin-8-O-(6'-Omalonyl) glucopyranoside, and physcion-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside. The reactivity and SC(50) values of those compounds were investigated, respectively. 1-O-Galloyl-2-O-cinnamoylglucose showed the strongest capability for scavenging 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazylfree radical; trans-3,5,4'-trihydroxystilbene-4'-O-β-D-(2"-O-galloyl) glucopyranoside showed the strongest capability for scavenging superoxide radical; 4-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone- 4'-O-2-D-(2"-O-galloyl-6"-O-p-coumaroyl) glucopyranoside exhibited the highest reactivity in the lipid peroxidation processes. The use of the analytical screening method based on ultra-performance LC-photodiode array-el-ESI-MS/MS would provide a new way for rapid detection of radical-scavenging natural compounds from radix et rhizoma Rhei or complex matrices.

Facile functionalization of multilayer fullerenes (carbon nano-onions, CNOs) was carried out by [2+1] cycloaddition of nitrenes. The products were further derivatized by using the "grafting from" strategy of in situ ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Using one-step nitrene chemistry with high-energy reagents, such as azidoethanol and azidoethyl 2-bromo-2-methyl propanoate, in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone at 160 degrees C for 16 h, hydroxyl and bromide functionalities were introduced onto the surfaces of CNOs. These hydroxyl CNOs (CNO-OH) and bromic CNOs (CNO-Br) were extensively characterized by various techniques such as thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS). TGA measurements indicated that the surface hydroxyl and bromide group density reached 1.49 and 0.49 mmol g(-1), respectively. The as-functionalized CNOs showed much better solubility in solvents than pristine CNOs. The CNO-OH were also observed to fluoresce at lambda = 453 nm in water. The CNO-OH and CNO-Br can be conveniently utilized as macroinitiators to conduct surface-initiated in-situ polymerizations. Poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL, 45 wt%) and polystyrene (PS, 60 wt%) were then grafted from surfaces of CNOs through the ROP of epsilon-caprolactone with the macroinitiator CNO-OH and the ATRP of styrene with the macroinitiator CNO-Br, respectively. The structures and morphology of the resulting products were characterized by (1)H NMR, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), TEM, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The polymer functionalized CNOs have good solubility/dispersibility in common organic solvents. The facile and scalable functionalization approaches can pave the way for the comprehensive investigation of chemistry of CNOs and fabrication of novel CNO-based nanomaterials and nanodevices.
