Recent developments in real‐time, in vivo micro‐imaging have allowed for the visualization of tissue pathological changes, facilitating rapid diagnosis. However, miniaturization, magnification, the field of view, and in vivo image stabilization remain challenging factors to reconcile. A key issue for this technology is ensuring it is user friendly for surgeons, enabling them to use the device manually and obtain instantaneous information necessary for surgical decision‐making. This descriptive study introduces a handheld, actively stabilized, miniaturized epi‐fluorescence widefield microscope (MEW‐M) for real‐time observation in vivo with high resolution. The methodology of MEW‐M system includes high resolution microscopy miniaturization technology, thousandfold shaking suppression (actively stabilized), ultra‐photosensitivity, and tailored image signal processing cell image capture and processing technology, which support for the excellent real‐time imaging performance of MEW‐M system in brain, mammary, liver, lung, and kidney tissue imaging of rats in vivo. With a single‐objective and high‐frame‐rate imaging, the MEW‐M system facilitates roving image acquisition, enabling contiguous analysis of large tissue areas. Objective: To test the feasibility and reproducibility of a handheld ultrasound device (HUD) compared to a standard ultrasound machine for muscle thickness measurements in healthy participants. Methods: A prospective cross‐sectional study was designed where two novice operators tested the thickness of the vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, and vastus intermedius muscles on recruited asymptomatic participants with no history of muscle diseases. The anterior–posterior thickness of each muscle was measured three times per operator to evaluate intra‐operator reproducibility and using two machines to evaluate inter‐system reproducibility. Scanning started using the HUD followed by the standard system. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and simple linear regression were used to test for reproducibility and proportional bias respectively. Results: A total of 33 male participants volunteered to take part in this study with a mean age of 22.7 years (6.8). Intra‐operator reproducibility was almost perfect for both operators on both machines (ICC > 0.80). The measurements difference percentage between the machines ranged from 1.8% to 6.6% and inter‐system reproducibility ICC ranged from 0.815 to 0.927 showing excellent reproducibility. Inter‐operator reproducibility was poor to moderate on both machines (ICC: 0.522–0.849). Regression analysis showed no proportional bias in the measurements. All measurements were completed successfully using the HUD. Conclusion: The HUD demonstrated excellent accuracy compared to the standard ultrasound machine for measuring thigh muscle thickness. Objective: The aim of this study is to compare a portable ultrasound (US) device and a traditional US for performing transcranial ultrasonography (CCT) in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Methods: This is a cross‐sectional, observational, and analytical study. The study recruited a total of 129 individuals from two public hospitals in the city of Rio de Janeiro in a prospective and non‐randomized manner between September 2019 and July 2021 as follows: group A with 31 patients with PD, group B with 65 patients with PD, and group C with 64 healthy individuals. Group A was used to collect data to establish the agreement analysis of the TCS measurements between the two devices. Groups B and C provided data for constructing the receiver operating characteristic curve for the handheld US. The subjects underwent the assessment of the transtemporal bone window (TW) quality, the mesencephalon area, the size of the third ventricle, and the substantia nigra (SN) hyperechogenicity area. Results: There was a good agreement between the methods regarding the quality of the TW–Kappa concordance coefficient of 100% for the right TW and 83% for the left, the midbrain area—intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) of 69%, the SN area ICC = 90% for the right SN and 93% for the left and the size of the third ventricle ICC = 96%. The cutoff point for the SN echogenic area in the handheld US was 0.20 cm2. Conclusions: The handheld US is a viable imaging method for performing TCS because it shows good agreement with the measurements performed with traditional equipment, and the measurement of SN echogenic area for PD diagnosis presents good sensitivity and specificity. Comparison of laboratory versus in situ visible/near‐ (visNIR) and mid‐infrared (MIR) spectroscopy for prediction of various soil properties is required to demonstrate trade‐offs between accuracy and efficiency. Field measurements were made on an arable field in Germany (silt loam Haplic Luvisol) using visNIR (ASD FieldSpec 3 Hi‐Res) and MIR (Agilent Technologies 4300 Handheld FTIR) and material was collected for lab visNIR (Foss XDS Rapid Content Analyzer) and MIR (Bruker‐TENSOR 27) measurements on dried and ground soil and determination of total, labile (>63 μm light), stabilized (>63 μm heavy + <63 μm oxidizable) and resistant organic carbon (OC) content, total nitrogen (Nt), pH and texture. Partial least squares regression models were calculated for five repeated partitions of the dataset (n = 238) into training (75%) and test (25%) sets. Lab spectral models outperformed in situ models for total OC (root mean squared error [RMSE] = 0.24–1.0 g kg−1), Nt (RMSE = 0.026–0.088 g kg−1), pH (RMSE = 0.12–0.28) and texture (RMSE = 0.53–1.5%). For both lab and field spectra, the accuracy of visNIR models was comparable or slightly better than MIR for sand, silt and clay. Spectral estimations for labile (RMSE = 0.34–0.47 g kg−1) and stabilized OC (RMSE = 0.41–0.85 g kg−1) were slightly (lab spectra) to substantially (field spectra) inferior to estimations from multiple linear regressions using total OC, Nt, clay and pH as predictors. Variable importance in the projection scores elucidated differences in spectral prediction mechanisms by spectrometer and OC fraction, and found mineral spectral signatures were highly important. For this field‐scale study with 14% median soil gravimetric water content (GWC), the loss of accuracy from lab to field measurement was lower for visNIR than MIR. Analysis of the driest soils (<9% GWC) found field MIR outperformed field visNIR for OC and Nt estimation and vice versa for the wettest soils (>18%), demonstrating the moisture dependence of performance rankings. Highlights: Lab vs field visible/near‐ (visNIRS) and mid‐infrared (MIRS) spectroscopy require comparison for prediction of soil C fractions, N, pH and texture.Lab MIRS prediction of C, N and pH were superior, while texture estimations were comparable or slightly inferior to lab visNIRS.At 14% median soil water content, the loss of accuracy from lab to field measurement was lower for visNIRS than MIRS.The ranking of field visNIRS vs MIRS performance for C and N estimation is moisture dependent. Objective: A handheld device was developed and qualified for in vivo human skin evaluation using laser speckle imaging technology. Methods: Each laser speckle device prototype allows the choice of up to three different laser wavelengths in the range of 400 nm to 800 nm in total. Speckle pattern analysis gives various speckle parameters, for example, speckle contrast, speckle size, speckle modulation or fractal dimension. The developed laser speckle device prototypes were evaluated investigating three skin issues. Results: We receive reproducible results from the speckle imaging device. For skin ageing, we found significant changes within three age groups. The effect of a methyl nicotinate treatment was clearly visible and quantifiable using a moorFLPI device as well as our speckle imaging device. In terms of basal cell carcinoma diagnosis, we found significant differences between normal and diseased skin, even though the number of samples was limited. Background: Visualization of the lesions in the lower genital tract is the mainstay for diagnosis of the four lesions found in female genital schistosomiasis (FGS), but colposcopes are generally not available in low‐resource settings. Objective: We sought to review handheld devices that could potentially be used for FGS diagnosis. Search strategy: We searched Medline and Embase 2015–2019 for handheld devices used in cervical cancer screening and FGS diagnosis. Selection criteria: We excluded studies that did not compare the device to standard‐of‐care colposcopes or histopathology. Main results and conclusion: In 11 studies, four handheld colposcopes, two smartphones, and one compact digital camera were evaluated. Two handheld colposcopes were found to be potentially adequate for FGS diagnosis, namely Gynocular and Mobile ODT. The smartphones and digital camera did not have sufficient magnification to diagnose grainy sandy patches, one of the FGS lesion types. Customized software should be made to support the diagnosis of both FGS and cervical neoplasia. Real‐time postgraduate training and quality control should be considered in future studies of handheld colposcopes. For patients from schistosomiasis endemic areas, we recommend that handheld devices are used for FGS. Studies are needed to determine which of the two devices is most adequate for FGS diagnosis in schistosomiasis endemic areas. Aims and objectives: This study investigated older adults' experiences of using the Appetitus app with support from healthcare professionals. Background: Good nutrition status is important for good health when ageing. However, as undernutrition remains a prevalent and persistent problem among older adults, the study explored whether technology affords innovative support for nutritional self‐care among older adults. Design: The study was explorative and qualitative in approach. Methods: Appetitus was developed as a tablet‐based application to prevent and alleviate undernutrition among older adults. Eighteen home‐dwelling older adults used the app for 8 weeks. Older adults received home care, and local healthcare professionals introduced the app and gave support during the study. Results: Appetitus served as a source of inspiration and a reminder of available, relevant food options. Appetitus encouraged some participants to eat or drink more by the end of the day while others became more aware of selecting food options to ensure sufficient protein, energy and fluids. However, some participants made no active effort to change their diet despite feedback from the app that suggested they did not eat or drink enough. Technical support from healthcare professionals facilitated participants' use of the app and tablet. Some participants also received more specific nutritional follow‐up that helped to make their experience of using the app more meaningful. Conclusion: Older adults' awareness about the importance of keeping a diet that helps prevent undernutrition was reinforced through the use of Appetitus and discussing nutrition with healthcare professionals. Aerial parts containing cannabidiol can be purchased in a legal way but cannabis used as recreational drug is illegal in most European countries. Δ9‐tetrahydrocannabinol is one of the main cannabinoids responsible for the psychotropic effect. European Union countries and Switzerland authorize a concentration of THC of 0.2 % and 1.0 % w/w, respectively, for smoking products and industrial hemp. Public health inspectors and law enforcement officers need to check the legality of samples. Therefore there is a need for innovative approaches, allowing quality control of these products in an easy way and preferably on site. In many countries, cultivation of industrial hemp is permitted if the THC content does not exceed 0.2 % w/w. A portable equipment could be a useful measuring tool for farmers to check for the THC content at regular time. In this work, 189 samples were analysed with a benchtop and a handheld NIR device in order to create two classification methods according to European and Swiss laws. All samples were also analysed by GC‐FID to determine their THC concentration. Supervised analysis was applied in order to establish the best model. For the first classification, the accuracy was 91% for the test set with the benchtop data and 93 % for the test set with the handheld data. For the second classification, the accuracies were respectively 91 % and 95 %. The obtained models, hyphenating spectroscopic techniques and chemometrics, enable to discriminate legal and illegal cannabis samples according to European and Swiss laws. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The near‐infrared (NIR) models for canola quality were developed with samples from Canadian canola seeds harvested in 2016 and 2017. All calibration models were first tested on a 2017 external validation sample set. The handheld NIR spectrometer used in this study has a limited wavelength range 908.1–1676.2 nm; however, the validation results showed that it could be used to predict several important parameters that defined canola seed quality. Final testing was performed using calibration models with the least number of factors on a second external canola validation sample set (2018 harvest). Some calibration models showed excellent stability and predictive powers with R2val values of 0.94–0.99 (i.e., oil, protein, oleic acid and iodine value) and low SEPs for both external validation sample sets. The α‐linolenic acid model had an R2val of 0.93 when applied to the 2017 external validation set, the correlation fell slightly to 0.88 when applied to the 2018 external validation sample set, potentially indicating a slight instability in the model. The prediction model for total glucosinolate was not very good, but still could be used to segregate the samples into low or high glucosinolate samples. Finally, the predictive models for chlorophyll and total saturates were unusable. The chlorophyll model was very unstable, likely due to the instrument's limited wavelength range. Abstract: Surface‐enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) has been emerging as a powerful tool for the detection of a variety of analytes due to its very high sensitivity and fingerprinting recognition capabilities. Technological progresses in the equipment for Raman analysis are contributing to its transition from a technically demanding research method to a more widely available analytical technique. In particular, the commercialization of portable or handheld instruments has opened up the possibility of performing in situ analysis. In this review, a selection of the SERS substrates that are expected to be more suitable for use in combination with portable instruments is presented: Substrates are compared, for example, in terms of performance, reproducibility, ease of fabrication, and surface area. Moreover, this paper provides a survey of the current diffusion of portable Raman instruments in the SERS detection of food contaminants: The investigation of several analytes is summarized (mainly toxins, virus, bacteria, pesticides, forbidden food dyes, and preservatives), reporting on the limits of detection and on the eventual coupling with concentration or separation techniques. Spatially offset Raman spectroscopy (SORS) provides chemical analysis at depth even when obscuring barriers such as plastic or tissue are present. As the collection probe is moved further away from the point of laser excitation, scattered photons from deeper layers begin to dominate the acquired spectra, thus giving rise to through barrier detection. Here, we demonstrate the potential of conventional Raman (CR) and SORS for through barrier detection using handheld spectrometers. We report the collection of Raman signals from an ethanol solution through plastic at thicknesses of up to 21 mm using SORS in combination with multivariate analysis. SORS is compared to CR, where we also demonstrate impressive through barrier detection of ethanol at depths up to 9 mm. We also highlight the advantage of applying multivariate analysis for through barrier detection using CR or SORS, particularly when peaks with similar spectral features are present in both the barrier and analyte spectra. In addition, to the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the assessment of the maximum level of through barrier detection using handheld CR and SORS instruments with a backscattering geometry. Introduction: The authors propose that tablet computers could benefit patients with acute stroke in the remote care setting, where time to and accuracy of CT interpretation greatly influences patient outcome.Methods: One hundred and fifty consecutive patients who presented to the Emergency Department of a tertiary referral neurosciences centre within a time window suitable for intravenous thrombolytic therapy were included. Images were wirelessly transmitted to a tablet computer (iPad 3rd Generation, model = A1430, Apple, Cupertino, CA) and were reviewed by radiologists with three levels of experience for signs of intracranial haemorrhage, large vessel occlusion and parenchymal infarction. Reference standard interpretation was performed by two neuroradiologists using a diagnostic monochrome display.Results: Consensus neuroradiologist review on the tablet display found and correctly classified all of the 23 cases of intracranial haemorrhage including 21 cases of parenchymal haematoma, two cases of petechial haemorrhage and one patient with an acute subdural haematoma. Less experienced readers missed cases of petechial and subdural haematomas. There was excellent agreement between the tablet and diagnostic monochrome display in cases with no infarct or extensive parenchymal infarction.Conclusions: Tablet computers can be used to facilitate rapid preliminary CT interpretation in patients with acute stroke in the remote setting. We applied a linear-array-based photoacoustic probe to detect melanin-containing melanoma tumor depth and volume in nude mice in vivo. This system can image melanomas at five frames per second (fps), which is much faster than our previous handheld single transducer system (0.1 fps). We first theoretically show that, in addition to the higher frame rate, almost the entire boundary of the melanoma can be detected by the linear-array-based probe, while only the horizontal boundary could be detected by the previous system. Then we demonstrate the ability of this linear-array-based system in measuring both the depth and volume of melanoma through phantom, ex vivo, and in vivo experiments. The volume detection ability also enables us to accurately calculate the rate of growth of the tumor, which is an important parameter in quantifying the tumor activity. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has long been used as a diagnostic tool in the field of ophthalmology. The ability to observe microstructural changes in the tissues of the eye has proved very effective in diagnosing ocular disease. However, this technology has yet to be introduced into the primary care office, where indications of disease are first encountered. We have developed a portable, handheld imaging probe for use in the primary care setting and evaluated its tissue site accessibility, ability to observe diseased tissue, and screening capabilities in in vivo human patients, particularly for pathologies related to the eye, ear and skin. Various stages of diabetic retinopathy were investigated using the handheld probe and early-stage diabetic retinopathy was flagged as abnormal from the OCT images. At such early stages of disease, it is difficult to observe abnormalities with the limited tools that are currently available to primary care physicians. These results indicate that OCT shows promise to transform from being a diagnostic technology in the medical and surgical specialities to a screening technology in the primary care office and at the front-line of healthcare. Point-of-care testing ( POCT) refers to any laboratory testing performed outside the conventional reference laboratory and implies close proximity to patients. Instrumental POCT systems consist of small, handheld or benchtop analyzers. These have potential utility in many veterinary settings, including private clinics, academic veterinary medical centers, the community (eg, remote area veterinary medical teams), and for research applications in academia, government, and industry. Concern about the quality of veterinary in-clinic testing has been expressed in published veterinary literature; however, little guidance focusing on POCT is available. Recognizing this void, the ASVCP formed a subcommittee in 2009 charged with developing quality assurance ( QA) guidelines for veterinary POCT. Guidelines were developed through literature review and a consensus process. Major recommendations include (1) taking a formalized approach to POCT within the facility, (2) use of written policies, standard operating procedures, forms, and logs, (3) operator training, including periodic assessment of skills, (4) assessment of instrument analytical performance and use of both statistical quality control and external quality assessment programs, (5) use of properly established or validated reference intervals, (6) and ensuring accurate patient results reporting. Where possible, given instrument analytical performance, use of a validated 13s control rule for interpretation of control data is recommended. These guidelines are aimed at veterinarians and veterinary technicians seeking to improve management of POCT in their clinical or research setting, and address QA of small chemistry and hematology instruments. Quantification of ciprofloxacin in proprietary Ciproxin tablets and generic ciprofloxacin tablets was made using handheld Raman spectroscopy. Powder dilutions of ciprofloxacin or crushed Ciproxin tablets with excipient(s) were made. The spectra were taken either from the powder dilutions or from pellets compressed from these dilutions and were stored in the instrument library. Methods were created from these powder dilutions: each representing a separate model. The spectra of the tablets were identified within each method using the inbuilt algorithm of the instrument. The results showed that only the models made with the crushed Ciproxin tablets were semi-quantitative for the analysis of Ciproxin tablets. On the other hand, none of the models could identify generic ciprofloxacin tablets. Thus, the spectra were exported to MATLAB for off-line quantification. Whereas, univariate regression models were hardly linear, partial least square regression models gave linear calibrations with correlation coefficients above 0.99 and root mean square error of calibration below 3.75% m/m. For the prediction of tablets, the models varied in their results with the one created with ciprofloxacin and lactose giving the most satisfactory results. However, in total the method did not give the pharmacopoeial accuracy of ±5% and stays a semi-quantitative approach although a satisfactory identity of the constituents was achieved. In handheld communications devices there is not much room for the placement of antennas. This problem is exacerbated when more than one antenna is needed for use in a MIMO communications system. It is then useful to be able to utilize some of the existing device structure to form the required antennas. Research exploring the ways in which information communication technologies (ICTs) could improve access to, and the quality of, teacher education in the global south (Leach et al., 2006) showed that when teachers were given sustained training, support and access to laptop and handheld computers, they found the handheld and laptop computers equally useful, both as tools for their own professional development and as tools for supporting classroom practices. Those who expressed a preference for one device over the other identified the handheld computer as the best tool for supporting teacher professional development and practice, particularly in rural communities. This article reports the findings of a recent one-year project which built on the previous research, but which focused solely on the potential of handheld computers for teacher professional development. Many studies have investigated the use of handheld computers in classroom settings but most of these focus on pupil learning (e.g. Fung et al., 1998; Yarnall et al., 2003). There is not yet a substantial body of literature on the potential of handhelds for teacher education, although Soloway (2002) argues that handhelds provide an opportunity for making major changes in educational settings. In this study, the teachers themselves used the analytical framework for teacher professional knowledge developed by Banks et al. (1999) to consider their own experiences with the handheld computers. This study finds that handheld digital tools offer a number of pedagogic and pragmatic advantages over laptop or desktop computers for teachers, especially in rural communities. BranchSampler is a system for computer-assisted manual stereology written for handheld devices running Windows CE. The system has been designed specifically to streamline data collection and optimize sampling of tree-like branching structures, with particular aims of reducing user errors, saving time, and saving data in formats suited for further analysis in other software, for example, a spreadsheet. The system can be applied in a wide range of applications, from biomedical science to agriculture and horticulture. It can be applied for sampling nested generations of lung bronchioles and renal arterioles or for collection and optimizing sampling of crops for precision agriculture. Although the system has been designed specifically for sampling branching structures, it is sufficiently flexible to be used for other applications involving nested stereological designs. We describe the system specifications, software and Graphical User Interface development, functionality and application of the handheld system using four examples: (a) sampling monkey lung bronchioles for estimation of diameter and wall thickness (b) sampling rat kidney for estimating number of arteries and arterioles in a specific generation (c) mapping fruit (apple) tree yield in an orchard and (d) estimating the total leaf surface area of chrysanthemum plants in a greenhouse. Context The administration of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) using paper checklists presents problems such as illegible handwriting, missing student names and/or numbers and lost checklists. Calculating and entering results is not only time-consuming, but is subject to human errors, and feedback to students is rarely available. To rectify these problems, personal digital assistants (PDAs) and HaPerT software were acquired to replace paper checklists and provide automated results and feedback. This study sought to determine the usability of the PDA assessment system. Methods The usability of the PDA system was evaluated according to effectiveness, efficiency and user satisfaction. Effectiveness was judged by comparing the results of an OSCE conducted in 2003 (paper-based method) and repeated in 2004 and 2005 (PDA method). Efficiency was determined by calculating the amount of time required to organise the logistics for 2 consecutive PDA OSCEs and deliver results and grades, compared with the time required for the paper-based OSCE. User satisfaction was established by using questionnaires to obtain feedback on the assessors' experiences during their first assessments. Results An independent groups t-test used to compare the means of scores achieved by students in the PDA and paper-based OSCEs, respectively, showed that the difference in effectiveness was not significant. In terms of efficiency, 77% less time was used for the PDA OSCE in 2004 and 93% less in 2005. Assessor feedback on PDA assessment was overwhelmingly positive. Assessment by PDA was found to be just as effective as and more efficient than paper-based assessment in practical examinations, and was highly rated by assessors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Wireless and mobile devices are beginning to offer stunning new technical capabilities for collaborative learning. Yet, researchers in this field must recognise the importance of complementing these technical advances with improved understanding of the patterns of classroom activity that most need support. The approach taken in the work reported in this paper has been to create conceptual tools that help thinking and talking about technology-supported collaborative learning. A particularly powerful tool is Collaborative Design Patterns, which captures common learning situations and benefits in written form. This paper uses four classroom scenarios to describe eight patterns. These patterns fall into two categories: whole-activity patterns, which suggest ways to organise one or more class periods, and smaller-grained support patterns. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract This paper illustrates the educational implications of the design features of public anonymity and private accountability in a classroom network of handheld devices. The author draws from four years of observations of classes using two early network prototypes. Themes discussed are anonymity of data submission to the group, the ability for students to see their data displayed in the group space, the ability for the teacher to instantly assess how all students are doing at any time during a lesson, and that the ability of the network to let all students answer all questions may have an impact upon student engagement in the classroom. The paper goes on to highlight research done in the field of communications using synchronous electronic submission systems and relates this to the use of similar networks in the classroom. Abstract H ow should nomadic web content be designed to improve and transform user experiences in a hands-on museum? In this study, 15 users were studied while using an electronic guidebook designed to augment user experiences via wireless technologies at the Exploratorium, an interactive science museum. Several recurring themes emerged from the analysis, such as users' sense of isolation and users' attempts to make a seamless transition between real-place and virtual contexts. Abstract This paper reports on a current project, KNOWMOBILE, that explores how wireless and mobile technologies, in this case how Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) may be useful in medical education and clinical practice, particularly to access net-based information. KNOWMOBILE is a research collaboration involving academic and industrial partners which aims to support Problem-Based Learning (PBL) and the integration of Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) in medical education reform in Norway. What does ‘just-in-time’ access to information mean in clinical settings? How can health professionals be helped with access to the most up-to-date medical information? From a preliminary analysis of the problems of Personal Digital Assistants in use — and nonuse — problems regarding information and communication infrastructure discussed that require work from a social historical interpretation of ‘infrastructures’ in order to enhance design perspectives and directions for future research. It is concluded that the PDAs should not be regarded as Personal Digital Assistants, but rather as gateways in complicated webs of interdependent technical and social networks. Abstract This paper describes a mobile learning project, where mobile devices are used for educational activities. The main focus of this paper is teacher training. Experiences on the use of mobile technology and how it was used in teacher training, especially how trainees and supervising teachers felt about it, are presented. The pilot study was carried out at the Department of Home Economics and Craft Science in University of Helsinki. The idea of the pilot was that the supervising teacher and trainee students could discus and share their ideas about teaching methods through the mobile device and use of a short message service (SMS) and digital pictures as a part of the supervising process. The use of digital pictures which were delivered via the mobile device proved to be surprisingly successful. The goal of these innovative pilot projects is to create flexible teaching solutions, which will enable access to information using different devices, and support learning in a variety of situations. Abstract This investigation describes the concept of mobile learning and the design of Ad Hoc and Mobile classrooms. Four classes of mobile learning and implementation of Ad Hoc and eSchoolbag systems are presented. The paper discusses the development of advanced wireless technologies for building an ad hoc classroom to create a modern and new learning environment. As in a traditional classroom, information technology is developed to provide the teacher with aids, such as a blackboard, a board rubber, coloured chalk, a microphone, a voice recorder, a video recorder, and so on, to support teaching and discussions. Additionally, students are provided with an electronic schoolbag which contains electronic books, a notebook, a parents' contact book, a pencil case, writing materials, sheets, a calculator, an address book, and other items. Taking lessons in a lively, vivid and new learning environment, it is expected that students will improve their learning performance with perhaps less attendance in a physical classroom and they gain the flexibility of being able to learn at their own convenience. Abstract The general aim of this study was to develop a platform-adaptive learning environment (xTask) and to evaluate its use. The software environment can be accessed by PC's or mobile devices, such as PDA's or Communicator. The empirical part of the study was carried out during May 2002 with 10 students between 21 and 50 years of age participating in a course on mobile device usability. In the study the xTask interface proved functional. The working processes show clearly that there were phases when the work was efficient with mobile devices, but students also felt that mobile devices were not ready to be the only platform for learning. They preferred PC's with wired networks, but admitted that PDA's could be used to support aspects of the learning processes. Generally, mobile technologies can bring some added value for network based learning, but they cannot replace traditional computers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Based on experience in orchestrating collaborative learning scenarios with ubiquitous computing technology, three approaches for extending co-constructive modelling and discussion environments with Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) connected through a wireless network are described. One application is an annotation tool, the second one replicates a modelling system on the PDA and the third one makes use of a wireless optical reader in addition to the PDA. They all provide ‘lightweight’ synchronisation mechanisms in PC-based environments.
