Today, computed tomography (CT) is often available and provides detailed information about the exact location and extent of dentigerous cysts, allowing for the description of new findings.This is a case series outlining the clinical, radiographic and computed tomographic features of dentigerous cysts in seven horses presented to the Equine Clinic at the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Zurich, Switzerland.The aim of this case series was to describe the radiographic and computed tomographic findings, and the occurrence of exostoses arising from the temporal bone, in horses with dentigerous cysts.The medical records of the Equine Hospital at the University of Zurich were reviewed for horses admitted with dentigerous cysts between 2007 and 2023. Data collected and analysed included patient signalment, clinical history, clinical signs and their duration prior to referral, diagnostic imaging results, treatment and outcomes.The most common location for the cysts was the base of the ear, although in one case, the maxillary sinus was involved. Of the seven cases, four were Icelandic horses. CT proved superior to standard radiography for determining the extent and precise location of the cysts, as well as for identifying dental material and exostoses in the temporal region. CT also facilitated detailed surgical planning. All cysts were surgically removed with good long‐term outcomes.Overall, the incidence of dentigerous cysts in horses was low. The relatively high occurrence of dentigerous cysts in Icelandic horses in this study is an interesting finding, though the small sample size calls for further research.Two of the cases in this series were similar to a recently described variant of a ‘temporal dentigerous cyst associated with an exostosis in the temporal region’ and were closely connected to the bony structure and draining tract. Summary: A 3‐year‐old Comptois gelding with a history of chronic fistulation at the base of the right ear was referred for the treatment of a unilateral ectopic tooth in the right temporal region. Cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) confirmed the presence of an ectopic tooth in the right mandibular fossa. The ectopic tooth was associated with a draining tract running through the zygomatic process of the right temporal bone. A total mandibular condylectomy provided a direct approach to the ectopic tooth, which was subsequently successfully removed. Long‐term follow‐up confirmed a satisfactory outcome despite the need for repeated debridement and persistence of a small draining tract 15 months postoperatively. Computer‐assisted surgery (CAS) provided precise anatomical intraoperative orientation for the condylectomy and subsequent removal of the ectopic tooth close to the calvarium. Supernumerary teeth are those that form in excess to the normal dental formula and while there is no clear pathogenesis for their formation, they are known to vary in size, morphology, location and presentation. We present two cases of otherwise healthy patients who presented with pain, discomfort and discharge from the nasal passages. CT imaging identified a tooth-like density present in the bone of the nasal floor in both patients. In both cases, the tooth was extracted surgically under anaesthetic. A symptomatic supernumerary in the nasal floor might cause a plethora of symptoms and complications, decreasing the overall quality of life for a patient. Patients who present with a supernumerary tooth in the nasal floor should be further investigated with a simple nasal speculum examination and a CT scan. Local anaesthetic is a key tool for all dentists in achieving painless treatment. Many complications have been reported secondary to a dental local anaesthetic, however those pertaining to the orbit and ocular muscles have been infrequent. This article describes three incidents when inadvertent abducens nerve palsy secondary to a dental local anaesthetic occurred during removal of an upper wisdom tooth, resulting in paresis of the lateral rectus muscle and diplopia. The patients were reassured and managed conservatively and there were no long‐term complications. The anatomical course of the abducens nerve from its origin to the lateral rectus muscle are discussed as well as potential mechanisms for the dental local anaesthetic to impact upon the nerve. Finally, following input from Opthalmology colleagues, recommendations for appropriate management are made to ensure a good outcome. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Twenty to thirty per cent of wisdom teeth are partially or completely retained. A displacement of such teeth into the ascending ramus of the mandible is far less frequent with few reported cases in the literature. The case of a young lady and a review of the literature are presented. A 27-year-old woman was referred to the specialist department by her dentist. At the age of 22, a panoramic radiograph had been taken for an agenesis of the patient's lower left second molar. At this time, the lower left third molar was situated slightly submucosally at the angle of the mandible. In the present radiograph, the tooth had migrated into the ascending ramus of the mandible. Clinically, there was no pain, sensation disorder, disturbed occlusion, limited mouth opening or any other complaint. Due to significant tooth migration within the last 6 years, operative removal of the displaced tooth was recommended. Computed tomography showed that the distal root was in direct relation with the inferior alveolar nerve. Treatment was performed via a transoral approach. Post-operative follow-up was uneventful. Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts associated with the crowns of deciduous, permanent or supernumerary teeth. When dentigerous cysts surround impacted teeth, they often displace the teeth into ectopic positions; ectopic teeth in the maxilla may be displaced into the maxillary sinus. A review of the literature on this condition is provided, and we report on six consecutive cases of dentigerous cysts associated with an ectopic third molar in the maxillary sinus, focusing on their conservative surgical treatment. Aim The incidence of impacted maxillary canines in Caucasians reportedly ranges from 1% to 3%. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence and determine the characteristics of impacted maxillary canines in southern Chinese children and adolescents. Methods This retrospective audit involved 533 subjects with impacted maxillary canines that had been treated between February 1982 and February 2009. A customized data entry form was prepared to record and evaluate the status of impacted canines. Results The 533 subjects (327 females and 206 males) with impacted maxillary canines, who were identified from the population of 26 039 subjects, represented a prevalence of 2.1%. Four hundred and forty-two (82.9%) of these subjects had unilaterally impacted canines, while 91 (17.1%) of them had bilateral impactions. In 442 subjects with unilateral canine impactions, 220 (49.8%) were buccally placed, 194 (43.9%) were palatally placed, and 28 (6.3%) of the canines were found to lie within the arch. Conclusions The overall prevalence of impacted maxillary canines in this study of 2.1% was similar to the figures quoted for Caucasian populations. In subjects with unilateral impactions, buccally impacted canines demonstrated a slightly higher incidence (49.8%) compared to palatally impacted canines (43.9%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We describe the case of a 53-year-old patient who presented with an intermittent discharging sinus on his face which, following a number of investigations, was found to be secondary to an ectopic third molar in the condylar region. The ectopic tooth was surgically removed with complete resolution of the facial swelling. This case highlights the possibility of dental pathology presenting with completely unrelated signs and symptoms, and the importance of the clinician maintaining an open mind when it comes to the differential diagnosis of such a presentation.
