This study describes important components of the reproductive biology of the Amazonian amphibian fish Copella arnoldi. The species sex ratio biased to female 1.8 to 1 male and the length‐weight relationship also shown differences between sexes (b value = 1.854 for females and 2.235 for males), although both presented allometric growth (b < 3), "being lighter for its length". The results also show the importance of the histological analysis to describe the gametogenesis and, consequently, define the reproductive cycle of a fish species. It showed both, males and females, spawning capable during a whole year, whereas the gonadosomatic index pointed spawning capable females during the winter and summer, and spawning capable males only in the autumn. The species presents the rare type of semicystic spermatogenesis and the spermatids complete their differentiation into the tubular lumen, forming a Type I spermatozoa. Both the characteristics are described for the first time for the Lebiasinidae family. Such data can contribute to the discussions about the position of the Lebiasinidae family within the Characiform order, which still does not have a conclusion. This paper explores the nationalist conflict in Catalonia and how it is lived and experienced by actors within it. It focuses on the people mobilised against independence who see themselves primarily as defenders of the Spanish Constitution and not of Spanish nationalism. Critics of civic nationalism in political theory and Nationalism Studies argue that anti‐nationalist rhetoric tends to be the expression of structural or hegemonic nationalism. Drawing on fieldwork carried out in Barcelona, I look at how the conflict has influenced discourse and language used in everyday life, how participants negotiate their identity, why people do (and do not) get involved in organisations that defend their political ideas, how they see themselves within the conflict and their perceptions of public space and its significance in relation to the constitution. An ethnographic approach explores these issues and discovers that although anti‐independence actors base their mobilisation in nationalism, civic nationalism cannot be reduced to just another form of nationalism. I aim to go beyond critics of civic nationalism to explore how my interlocutors act within and against nationalism, reproducing nationalist discourse in some aspect (boundaries of the nation) in order to challenge it in others (content and relevance of nationalism in everyday life). Breast cancer continues to be the major cause of cancer death among women. The high genetic heterogeneity and chemoresistant phenotypes of breast tumors require the search for new compounds to expand the options for the treatment of this disease. Kaurenoic acid (KA) is an ent‐kaurane type‐diterpene with cytotoxic and genotoxic effects against gastric and cervical cancer cells. In the present study, we report the antiproliferative effects of KA in the breast tumoral cell line MCF‐7 and the normal breast counterpart MCF‐10 A. The long‐term cytotoxic effects of KA were observed by the reduction of survival fraction at 50 and 100 μM. At these concentrations, the treatment with KA increased the extension of DNA damage followed by G1 cell cycle phase accumulation and induction of apoptosis in both cell lines. Jeffamines® are a family of polymers containing primary amine groups attached to the extremities of polyether backbone which can be used as biomaterials. They have been used in combination with polyethylenimine (PEI) to improve biocompatibility in drug and gene delivery systems. Despite these facts, very few studies have been done on cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of pure Jeffamines® or compared with PEI. The present study aimed to evaluate and compare the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of Jeffamines® and PEI in CHO-K1 cells. Specifically, polypropylene oxide 2000 (PPO 2000, Jeffamine® D series), polyethylene oxide 1900 (PEO 1900, Jeffamine® ED series), branched 25 kDa PEI, and linear 20 kDa PEI were evaluated at different concentrations. Cell viability and proliferation were assessed by 2,3-bis-(2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)−2H-tetrazolium-5-carboxanilide (XTT) and 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) assays, respectively. Genotoxicity was evaluated using single cell gel electrophoresis assay and the cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus assay. PPO 2000 was the most cytotoxic Jeffamine®, whereas PEO 1900 did not caused significant cell death at any tested concentration. Branched PEI was more cytotoxic than linear PEI (LPEI) and both were more cytotoxic than Jeffamines®. Only PPO 2000 induced DNA damage when evaluated in comet assay probably due to its cytotoxicity. PPO 2000, PEO 1900, and PEI did not increase the frequency of micronuclei when tested at sub-cytotoxic concentrations. This work provides new insights about biocompatibility of Jeffamines® and PEI and suggests the genotoxicological safety for further investigations of PEO 1900 in drug and gene delivery systems. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A high percentage of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) patients are also affected by dyslipidemia and chronic periodontitis (CP), but no studies have determined the gene expression in patients that are simultaneously affected by all three diseases. We investigated the systemic expression of immune-related genes in T2D, dyslipidemia, and CP patients. One hundred and fifty patients were separated into five groups containing 30 individuals each: (G1) poorly controlled T2D with dyslipidemia and CP; (G2) well-controlled T2D with dyslipidemia and CP; (G3) normoglycemic individuals with dyslipidemia and CP; (G4) healthy individuals with CP; (G5) systemic and periodontally healthy individuals. Blood analyses of lipid and glycemic profiles were carried out. The expression of genes, including IL10, JAK1, STAT3, SOCS3, IP10, ICAM1, IFNA, IFNG, STAT1, and IRF1, was investigated by RT-qPCR. Patients with dyslipidemia demonstrated statistically higher expression of the IL10 and IFNA genes, while IFNG, IP10, IRF1, JAK1, and STAT3 were lower in comparison with nondyslipidemic patients. Anti-inflammatory genes, such as IL10, positively correlated with parameters of glucose, lipid, and periodontal profiles, while proinflammatory genes, such as IFNG, were negatively correlated with these parameters. We conclude that dyslipidemia appears to be the primary disease that is associated with gene expression of immune-related genes, while parameters of T2D and CP were correlated with the expression of these important immune genes. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between polymorphisms in the estrogen-metabolizing genes CYP17, CYP1B1, CYP1A1, and COMT and genomic instability in the peripheral blood lymphocytes of 62 BC patients and 62 controls considering that increased or prolonged exposure to estrogen can damage the DNA molecule and increase the genomic instability process in breast tissue. Our data demonstrated increased genomic instability in BC patients and that individuals with higher frequencies of MN exhibited higher risk to BC when belonging Val/Met genotype of the COMT gene.We also observed that CYP17 and CYP1A1 polymorphisms can modify the risk to BC depending on the menopause status. We can conclude that the genetic background in estrogen metabolism pathway can modulate chromosome damage in healthy controls and patients and thereby influence the risk to BC. These findings suggest the importance to ally biomarkers of susceptibility and effects to estimate risk groups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
