Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental process known to play a crucial role in electron acceleration and heating, however, the mechanism of electron energization during reconnection is still not fully understood. This study introduces a novel electron acceleration mechanism in which electrons can be accelerated by secondary reconnection in the separatrix region. The secondary reconnection occurs in a thin current sheet resulted from the shear of the out‐of‐plane Hall magnetic fields of the primary magnetopause reconnection. It results in the intense electron energy fluxes toward the primary X‐line. This mechanism will likely be an important piece in the puzzle of particle acceleration by reconnection. This paper presents the magnetospheric multiscale (MMS) observations of three flux ropes (FRs) sequentially in a reconnection exhaust at Earth's magnetopause. Three active X‐lines, which are responsible for the formation of these FRs, were also detected by MMS, providing strong evidence that the FRs were generated by multiple X‐line reconnection. We find that the core field inside the FRs considerably affects the Hall current in the adjacent X‐lines. The intense core field of the FRs deflected the electron outflow jet, forming the electron‐scale Hall magnetic field on the magnetosheath side. Additionally, an active secondary reconnection was observed at the center of one FR. This secondary reconnection split the FR into two smaller FRs and produced sharp density gradients and intense fluctuations of electric field and current within the FR. These observations advance the understanding of the formation and evolution of FRs during multiple X‐line reconnection at magnetopause. Using high‐resolution measurements from the magnetospheric multiscale mission, we present a case study that all active X‐lines expected at the edges of three successive FRs were observed. These observations confirm that reconnection could simultaneously occur at multiple sites to produce the FRs at Earth's magnetopause. Interestingly, the electron‐scale Hall magnetic field was observed at the magnetosheath side in this multiple X‐line reconnection. This is due to the electron outflow jet deflected into the magnetosheath side by the strong core field of FR. Additionally, an ongoing secondary reconnection was observed at the center of one FR. Intense waves and current perturbations were observed in a smaller FR which was produced by this secondary reconnection. Despite a growing number of observations of whistler waves in/around the reconnection diffusion region, the origin of the whistler waves in the diffusion region and their role in reconnection remain elusive. This paper investigates the whistler‐mode waves within an electron‐scale reconnecting current sheet observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission on 23 December 2016. These whistlers were observed in both the electron diffusion region (EDR) and the immediate inflow region of the electron‐scale magnetic reconnection site. The dispersion relation of these whistlers is measured and compared to predictions from linear theory for the first time in these regions. The comparison shows that the field‐aligned drifting electron component critically modifies the dispersion relation of whistlers in the EDR due to the Doppler‐shift effects. We demonstrate that these whistlers propagated into the EDR from outside rather than locally excited, however, they did not provide sufficiently large anomalous dissipation in this EDR. Summary: lncRNAs play crucial roles in fat metabolism in animals. Previously, we have compared the mRNA transcriptome profiles between seven fat‐type Chinese pig breeds and one lean‐type Western breed (Yorkshire, YY). The associations between differentially expressed (DE) genes and phenotypical traits were investigated. In the present study, to further explore the underlying regulatory mechanisms, lncRNAs were sequenced and compared between YY and Chinese indigenous breeds. The results showed 9114 and 7538 DE lncRNAs between at least one Chinese breed and the YY breed in the adipose and muscle tissue respectively. KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that the target genes of these DE lncRNAs mainly influenced the glucolipid metabolism, which is an important process affecting meat quality. Correlation analyses between the DE lncRNA and DE mRNA genes related to meat quality and growth traits were performed. The results showed that LTCONS_00073280 was associated with intramuscular fat content. Four lncRNAs (LTCONS_00101781, LTCONS_00037879, LTCONS_00088260 and LTCONS‐00128343) might mediate backfat thickness. Overall, this study provides candidate lncRNAs that potentially affect meat quality, which might be useful for molecular breeding of pig breeds in future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate whistler‐mode waves and broadband electrostatic waves (EWs) within an ion diffusion region (IDR) at the magnetopause. The quasi‐parallel whistlers are observed in the separatrix regions associated with the electron anisotropy or loss cone, while the oblique whistlers, the Buneman‐type waves, and the oblique EWs are observed in the center of the current sheet associated with the accelerated electron or ion beams. The whistlers are linked with Buneman‐type waves by the electron Pacman distribution rather than the wave‐wave process. The accelerated cold electron beams excite the Buneman‐type instabilities and make the anisotropy or loss cone of hot electrons less apparent, which led to the conversion of the whistlers from quasi‐parallel to oblique. Additionally, the oblique EWs are associated with the ion beams produced by the multiple X‐line reconnection. These results provide a further understanding of the relation between plasma waves and plasma kinetics in the IDR. Magnetic reconnection and turbulence are the two most important energy dissipation processes in plasma. These two processes intertwine with each other and play important roles in their respective dynamic evolution. Here, we present the first evidence that secondary reconnections occur in the turbulent outflow driven by a primary reconnection in the Earth's magnetotail. We have identified 14 secondary reconnections in a large number of current filaments in the turbulent outflow, which persisted for about one and half an hour. Most of these secondary reconnections were electron‐only reconnection that has recently been discovered in the magnetosheath. These secondary reconnections entangled the magnetic field lines and dissipated the magnetic energy in the outflow region far away from the primary X line. Two‐dimensional Hall reconnection model can explain the fast release of magnetic energy and most of its predictions have been demonstrated by in situ satellite observations. However, the three‐dimensional effect to reconnection remains poorly known. Recent numerical simulations have shown that three‐dimensional evolution is more complex than two‐dimensional in that reconnection occurs in multiple sites that are not necessarily in the primary neutral current sheet. Here, we present the first observational evidence for localized secondary reconnection at the separatrix surface of a magnetic flux rope (MFR). This secondary reconnection occurs between the axial magnetic field of the MFR, which points out‐of‐plane of the Earth's magnetopause reconnection, and the magnetospheric field. This three‐dimensional electron‐scale reconnection in the exhaust facilitates the cross‐scale energy conversion from the macro‐scale down to electron‐scale. Background: The prognosis of patients with biliary atresia (BA) after Kasai portoenterostomy (KPE) varies, and precisely predicting the outcomes of KPE before surgery is still challenging.Methods: A total of 158 patients who underwent KPE in our hospital were included in this study. The patients in the training cohort were recruited from January 2012 to October 2017 (n = 118), and then, those in the validation cohort were recruited from November 2017 to April 2019 (n = 40). Combined nomogram models were developed based on two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D SWE) values and other biomarkers. The utility of the proposed models was evaluated by C-index.Results: 2D SWE played a potentially important role in predicting native liver survival (NLS) of BA patients with a C-index of 0.69 (0.63 to 0.75) in the training cohort and 0.76 (0.67 to 0.85) in the validation cohort. The nomogram A based on 2D SWE values, age, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio (APRI) had a better C-index in the training cohort [0.74 (0.68-0.80) vs. 0.66 (0.60-0.73), P = 0.017] and in the validation cohort [0.78 (0.70-0.86) vs. 0.60 (0.49-0.71), P = 0.002] than the nomogram B (without 2D SWE). Using risk score developed from nomogram A, we successfully predicted 88.0% (22/25) of patients in the training cohort and 75.0% (9/12) in the validation cohort to have survival time of less than 12 months after KPE.Conclusion: The combined nomogram model based on 2D SWE values, age, GGT and APRI prior to KPE can effectively predict NLS in BA infants. We report a Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission observation of magnetic reconnection occurring at the edge of a large‐scale magnetic flux rope (MFR), the cross‐section of which was about 2 RE. The MFR was observed at the duskside in the Earth's magnetotail and was highly oblique with its axis approximately along the XGSM direction. We find an electron‐scale current sheet near the edge of this MFR. The Hall magnetic and electric field, super‐Alfvénic electron outflow, parallel electric field, and positive energy dissipation were observed associated with the current sheet, which indicates that MMS detected a reconnecting current sheet with a large guide field. Interestingly, ions were not coupled in this reconnection, akin to the electron‐only reconnection observed in the turbulent magnetosheath. We further find that the electron‐only reconnection is commonly associated with a macroscopic MFR. This result will shed new light on understanding the multiscale coupling associated with an MFR in space plasmas. High‐speed railway (HSR) is becoming one of the most effective and important transportation modes. To ensure the safety of HSR, a stable communication system is necessary. The understanding of propagation characteristics of radio channel is important for HSR communication system design. In this paper, a wideband measurement in suburban HSR scenarios at 460 MHz is presented. Some typical channel parameters such as the large‐scale fading, Ricean K factor, power‐delay profile, and root‐mean‐square delay spread are extracted from the measurement data. The different distributions of small‐scale fading are also compared. The relationships between the channel parameters and the distance of transmitter (base station) and receiver are also explored. The results could provide a reference for the design and evaluation of HSR communication network, especially for the Long‐Term‐Evolution (LTE)‐railway system. Dipolarization fronts (DFs) are important for energy conversion, particle acceleration, and flux transport in the magnetotail. The partition of energy conversion between ions and electrons and the energy dissipation at DFs are not well understood. In this paper, we present a statistical study of energy conversion and dissipation of 122 DFs observed by Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the magnetotail. Statistically, electromagnetic energy transfers to plasma at DF. The released energy is mainly transferred to ions rather than electrons. On average, ions gain energy across the whole DF, while electrons gain energy at the leading part but lose energy at the trailing part of DFs. Joule dissipation J · (E+ve × B) can be either positive or negative at DFs, and its average value is very small. The kinetic energy dissipation parameter Pi − D does not exhibit clear signatures at the DFs; hence, it is not suitable for quantifying the energy dissipation at DF. Through phase‐space analysis of Dumond diagrams for a flat Bragg crystal, a single bent Laue crystal and a monochromator consisting of double‐bent Laue crystals, this work shows that it is possible to match the flat Bragg crystal to both the single‐crystal and double‐crystal Laue monochromators. The matched system has the advantage that the phase space of the bent crystal's output beam is much larger than that of the flat crystal, making the combined system stable. Here it is suggested that such a matched system can be used at synchrotron facilities to realize X‐ray dark‐field imaging, analyzer‐based imaging and diffraction‐enhanced imaging at beamlines using double‐Laue monochromators. Summary: Elucidation of the pig microRNAome is essential for interpreting functional elements of the genome and understanding the genetic architecture of complex traits. Here, we extracted small RNAs from skeletal muscle and adipose tissue, and we compared their expression levels between one Western breed (Yorkshire) and seven indigenous Chinese breeds. We detected the expression of 172 known porcine microRNAs (miRNAs) and 181 novel miRNAs. Differential expression analysis found 92 and 12 differentially expressed miRNAs in adipose and muscle tissue respectively. We found that different Chinese breeds shared common directional miRNA expression changes compared to Yorkshire pigs. Some miRNAs differentially expressed across multiple Chinese breeds, including ssc‐miR‐129‐5p, ssc‐miR‐30 and ssc‐miR‐150, are involved in adipose tissue function. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that the target genes of the differentially expressed miRNAs are associated mainly with signaling pathways rather than metabolic and biosynthetic processes. The miRNA–target gene and miRNA–phenotypic traits networks identified many hub miRNAs that regulate a large number of target genes or phenotypic traits. Specifically, we found that intramuscular fat content is regulated by the greatest number of miRNAs in muscle tissue. This paper reports magnetospheric multiscale (MMS) observations of the sub‐ion‐scale dynamics within the ion diffusion region (IDR) in the Earth's magnetotail. MMS crossed the IDR from the southern to the northern hemisphere, at about two ion inertial length earthward of the X line with a small guide field. Electrons were anisotropic in the inflow region of the IDR and turned into isotropic within the IDR. The isotropization of the electrons was probably due to the pitch angle scattering in highly curved magnetic field lines. We suggest that the thickness of the electron isotropic region strongly depends on the horizontal distance to the X line. The out‐of‐plane current bifurcated in the IDR. It peaked at the boundaries between the inflow and outflow electrons around the separatrices. Magnetic energy conversion and dissipation predominantly occurred at the peak of the out‐of‐plane current instead of at the neutral sheet center where BL = 0. Both the energy dissipation and normal electric field EN exhibited evident asymmetry with respect to the neutral sheet. The energy dissipation was larger around the northern separatrix than around the southern separatrix. The electric field EN showed a tripolar variation across the neutral sheet, that is, a unipolar EN around the southern separatrix and a bipolar EN around the northern separatrix. Magnetic holes have been widely observed in various space plasma systems. The origin of magnetic holes and their influence to background plasma are under debate. In this paper, we show a kinetic‐scale electron vortex magnetic hole in a nonideal region of an active X line, which was observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission at the dayside magnetopause. Intense current and nonideal electric field in the electron frame were observed within the magnetic hole, which led to a strong energy dissipation. Thus, the electron vortex magnetic hole probably provided an additional energy dissipation channel besides the electron diffusion region adjacent to the hole. We suggest that magnetic reconnection provided favorable conditions for the formation of this kinetic‐scale magnetic hole and is an important source of magnetic holes in space plasma. Recent studies have revealed a global, poleward migration trend of tropical cyclones (TCs) in terms of annual‐averaged latitude of lifetime maximum intensity under the global warming. The TCs in the western North Pacific (WNP) make the largest contribution to this trend. One existing hypothesis is that there is a linkage between poleward migration of TCs and anthropogenic forcing. Here we introduce a new measurement, the lifetime‐averaged latitude weighted by TC destructive potential, to detect the meridional migration of the WNP TCs, which is more reliable and meaningful as it considers not only past data uncertainty but also public concerns. Our results show that the trend of WNP TC migration reversed during the recent warming slowing‐down period (after ~1999). Different from the existing hypothesis, it is the change of regional pattern of sea surface temperature that contributes greatly to the meridional migration of WNP TCs. However, utilizing our new measurement, we find that the poleward migration of WNP TCs reversed direction during the recent warming slowing‐down period (after ~1999). We thus propose a new mechanism associated with the regional pattern of sea surface temperature change, which is characterized by a relatively warm or cold sea surface temperature pool in the region (20–40°N, 140–160°E). Compared with the previous theory based on anthropogenic forcing and well‐known dominant modes of variability, the new mechanism provides a more convincing explanation for the migration of WNP TCs since 1980, especially for the recent warming slowing‐down period. Abstract: It has been proposed that, in the near‐Earth magnetotail, earthward propagating flux ropes can merge with the Earth's dipole magnetic field and dissipate its magnetic energy. However, the reconnection diffusion region related to this process has not been identified. Here we report the first in situ observation of magnetic reconnection between an earthward propagating flux rope and the closed magnetic field lines connecting to Earth. Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) spacecraft crossed a vertical current sheet between the leading edge of the flux rope (negative Bz) and the geomagnetic field (positive Bz). The subion‐scale current sheet, super‐Alfvénic electron outflow, Hall magnetic and electric field, conversion of magnetic energy to plasma energy (J·E > 0), and magnetic null were observed during the crossing. All the above signatures indicate that MMS detected the reconnection diffusion region. This result is also relevant to other planets with intrinsic magnetosphere. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: From the literature concerning the traditional nonproportional (NP) multiaxial cyclic fatigue prediction, special attentions are usually paid to multiaxial constitutive relations to quantify fatigue damage accumulation. As a result, estimation of NP hardening effect decided by the entire history path is always proposed, which is a challenging and complex task. To simplify the procedure of multiaxial fatigue life prediction of engineering components, in this paper, a novel effective energy parameter based on simple material properties is proposed. The parameter combines uniaxial cyclic plastic work and NP hardening effects. A methodology is presented to characterize the crystallographic texture of atomic configurations on the basis of Euler angles. Texture information characterized by orientation map, orientation distribution function, texture index, pole figure and inverse pole figure is obtained. The paper reports the construction and characterization of the texture of nanocrystalline configurations with different grain numbers, grain sizes and percentages of preferred orientation. The minimum grain number for texture‐free configurations is ∼2500. The effect of texture on deducing grain size from simulated X‐ray diffraction curves is also explored as an application case of texture analysis. In addition, molecular dynamics simulations are performed on initially texture‐free nanocrystalline Ta under shock‐wave loading, which shows a ⟨001⟩ + ⟨111⟩ double fiber texture after shock‐wave compression. The borrowing of historical control data can be an efficient way to improve the treatment effect estimate of the current control group in a randomized clinical trial. When the historical and current control data are consistent, the borrowing of historical data can increase power and reduce Type I error rate. However, when these 2 sources of data are inconsistent, it may result in a combination of biased estimates, reduced power, and inflation of Type I error rate. In some situations, inconsistency between historical and current control data may be caused by a systematic variation in the measured baseline prognostic factors, which can be appropriately addressed through statistical modeling. In this paper, we propose a Bayesian hierarchical model that can incorporate patient-level baseline covariates to enhance the appropriateness of the exchangeability assumption between current and historical control data. The performance of the proposed method is shown through simulation studies, and its application to a clinical trial design for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is described. The proposed method is developed for scenarios involving multiple imbalanced prognostic factors and thus has meaningful implications for clinical trials evaluating new treatments for heterogeneous diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Lumbar spinal surgery is most commonly performed under general anaesthesia. However, spinal anaesthesia has also been used. We aimed to systematically review the comparative evidence. We only included randomised, controlled trials in this meta-analysis and calculated the risk ratio or standardised mean difference for haemodynamics, blood loss, surgical time, analgesic requirement, nausea and/or vomiting, and length of hospital stay. Eight studies with a total of 625 patients were included. These were considered to be at high risk of bias. Compared with general anaesthesia, the risk ratio (95% CI) with spinal anaesthesia for intra-operative hypertension was 0.31 (0.15-0.64), I2 = 0% (p = 0.002); for intra-operative tachycardia 0.51 (0.30-0.84), I2 = 0% (p = 0.009); for analgesic requirement in the postanaesthesia care unit 0.32 (0.24-0.43), I2 = 0% (p < 0.0001); and for nausea/vomiting within 24 h postoperatively 0.29 (0.18-0.46), I2 = 12% (p < 0.00001). The standardised mean difference (95% CI) for hospital stay was -1.15 (-1.98 to -0.31), I2 = 89% (p = 0.007). There was no evidence of a difference in intra-operative hypotension and bradycardia, blood loss, surgical time, analgesic requirement within 24 h postoperatively, and nausea/vomiting in the postanaesthesia care unit. Background Children who are neglected can experience serious and lifelong consequences. Earlier identification of children at risk for child neglect might reduce the individual, medical and societal costs. Methods A cross-sectional survey using multi-stage stratified cluster random sampling was conducted in Shaanxi and Chongqing from September 2012 to April 2013. The child neglect was measured by scale on child neglect in Rural China. The neglect rates between groups were compared with a chi-squared test. Factors possibly associated with neglect were analysed with binary logistic regression. All analyses were conducted in 2014. Results A total of 4131 eligible participants (2094 boys and 2037 girls) from 21 schools were recruited. The overall prevalence of child neglect was 55.50%. Significant differences were found between children of Han nationality (53.07%) and children of minorities (68.76%) (P<0.01); un-leftbehind children (49.10%) and left-behind children (61.65%) (P<0.01); first-born children (52.90%) and non-first-born children (59.04%) (P<0.01); and children from one-child families (47.87%) and children from multi-child families (58.20%) (P<0.01). Protective factors included one-child families, being a girl and having a father with higher education. However, factors such as being left behind; being from a minority, step family or one-parent family; or having a mother who rarely returns home placed children at increased risk of neglect. Conclusions The neglect rate of school-aged children in rural areas of western China is much higher than that in urban areas and eastern China. Children belonging to minorities, step families and multi-child families, whose mother seldom goes home, are at a higher risk of being neglected. Background Fetal or neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia ( FNAIT) results from a maternal alloimmunization against fetal platelet antigens. Since the implementation of serological methods for the detection of antiplatelet alloantibodies, it has been demonstrated that anti- HPA-3a alloantibodies have considerable heterogeneity. Consequently, the serologic diagnosis of FNAIT may be hampered, despite severe clinical signs and the absence of other causes of thrombocytopenia. Here, we report the first HPA-3a feto-maternal alloimmunization observed in the Chinese population. Case study A 28-year-old woman gave birth to her first child. After 2 h of life, the newborn presented signs of multiple subcutaneous bleeding and severe thrombocytopenia (7 × 109 platelets/l). Three years later, the woman gave birth to a second newborn, with petechial and signs of bleeding at 15 min of life. Brain ultrasound revealed the presence of an intracranial haemorrhage. The newborn recovered after 23 days. Results Investigations revealed the presence of a feto-maternal HPA-3a incompatibility (mother: HPA-3bb; newborn: HPA-3ab). Maternal anti- HPA-3a alloantibodies were detected using the MAIPA method. Both children were transfused with compatible HPA-3bb platelets and perfused with intravenous immunoglobulins associated with corticoids. Conclusions This case shows that anti- HPA-3 maternal alloimmunization is a potentially devastating disease. The detection of anti- HPA-3 alloantibodies may be a challenge for platelet immunologists to ascertain the diagnosis. In case of bleeding, platelet transfusion is the therapy to be used in an emergency. Plant growth in semi-arid ecosystems is usually severely limited by soil nutrient availability. Alleviation of these resource stresses by fertiliser application and aboveground litter input may affect plant internal nutrient cycling in such regions. We conducted a 4-year field experiment to investigate the effects of nitrogen (N) addition (10 g N·m−2·year−1) and plant litter manipulation on nutrient resorption of Leymus chinensis, the dominant native grass in a semi-arid grassland in northern China. Although N addition had no clear effects on N and phosphorus (P) resorption efficiencies in leaves and culms, N fertilisation generally decreased leaf N resorption proficiency by 54%, culm N resorption proficiency by 65%. Moreover, N fertilisation increased leaf P resorption proficiency by 13%, culm P resorption proficiency by 20%. Under ambient or enriched N conditions, litter addition reduced N and P resorption proficiencies in both leaves and culms. The response of P resorption proficiency to litter manipulation was more sensitive than N resorption proficiency: P resorption proficiency in leaves and culms decreased strongly with increasing litter amount under both ambient and enriched N conditions. In contrast, N resorption proficiency was not significantly affected by litter addition, except for leaf N resorption proficiency under ambient N conditions. Furthermore, although litter addition caused a general decrease of leaf and culm nutrient resorption efficiencies under both ambient and enriched N conditions, litter addition effects on nutrient resorption efficiency were much weaker than the effects of litter addition on nutrient resorption proficiency. Taken together, our results show that leaf and non-leaf organs of L. chinensis respond consistently to altered soil N availability. Our study confirms the strong effects of N addition on plant nutrient resorption processes and the potential role of aboveground litter, the most important natural fertiliser in terrestrial ecosystems, in influencing plant internal nutrient cycling. Objective To identify predictors of moderate-to-severe systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) flare in 562 patients treated with standard therapy alone in phase III belimumab trials, and to evaluate the impact of standard therapies on preventing flares. Methods Post hoc analysis assessed baseline demographics, disease activity, and biomarkers in patients with and those without flare at treatment weeks 24 and 52. Severe flare was defined by the modified SLE Flare Index (SFI) and the development of any new British Isles Lupus Assessment Group (BILAG) A domain score. Severe and moderate flare was defined by development of 1 new BILAG A domain score or 2 new BILAG B domain scores. Baseline characteristics associated with a ≥10% absolute difference or a ≥50% increase in flare rates were considered predictive. Results Frequencies of flares over 52 weeks according to the SFI, any new BILAG A domain score, and 1 new BILAG A domain score or 2 new BILAG B domain scores were 23.7%, 23.1%, and 32.0%, respectively. Flare predictors by univariate analysis on all 3 indices at weeks 24 and 52 were a score ≥12 on the Safety of Estrogens in Lupus Erythematosus National Assessment version of the SLE Disease Activity Index (SELENA-SLEDAI); anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA) positivity; proteinuria (≥0.5 gm/24 hours); BILAG renal, vasculitic, and hematologic scores; elevated C-reactive protein levels; and B lymphocyte stimulator (BLyS) levels ≥2 ng/ml. Independent predictors by multivariate analysis at week 52 were SELENA-SLEDAI and/or BILAG renal involvement and anti-dsDNA ≥200 IU/ml (on all 3 indices); SELENA-SLEDAI and/or BILAG neurologic and vasculitic involvement (on 2 indices: any new BILAG A domain score and 1 new BILAG A domain score or 2 new BILAG B domain scores); BLyS levels ≥2 ng/ml (on 2 indices: the SFI and 1 new BILAG A domain score or 2 new BILAG B domain scores); and low C3 level (on the SFI). Baseline medications did not significantly decrease or increase moderate-to-severe SLE flare risk. Conclusion Patients who were receiving standard SLE therapy and had renal, neurologic, or vasculitic involvement, elevated anti-dsDNA or BLyS levels, or low C3 had increased risk of clinically meaningful flare over 1 year. BACKGROUND Psoralea corylifolia L. ( PC) was commonly used to treat miscarriages clinically. The aim of this study was to examine its embryotoxicity in mice and embryonic stem cells ( ESCs). METHODS Quality control of PC extract including reference marker compounds, pesticide residues, and heavy metals was authenticated with HPLC, Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Pregnant mice were randomly assigned into five groups and dosed with distilled water ( G1), PC extract of 2 ( G2), 4 ( G3), or 8 g/kg/day ( G4), and vitamin A ( G5). Meanwhile, half maximal inhibitory concentration values for ESCs and 3 T3 cells were identified in a cytotoxicity assay, and apoptosis in neuroepithelium was assessed by transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS In the G4 group, a statistically significant decrease in the total fetus, live fetus, and gravid uterine weight, and increase in the resorbed fetus, postimplantation loss, and neuroepithelial apoptosis as well as maternal liver-weight were found ( p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS PC extracts at 8 g/kg/day might cause fetal toxicity and maternal liver damage in mice, although it did not cause typical malformation and ESC's cytotoxicity in this experiment. We prospectively evaluated the CEL-100 videolaryngoscopeTM for insertion of double-lumen tracheal tubes in 48 consecutive patients who had been found to have an unanticipated Cormack and Lehane grade 3 (n = 43) and grade 4 (n = 5) laryngeal view and in whom two attempts at tracheal intubation using the Macintosh laryngoscope had failed. When the CEL-100 was subsequently employed, the glottic view improved in 45 (94%) patients. The view improved by one grade in 15 (31%) patients and by two grades in 30 (63%) patients, compared with the Macintosh blade (p < 0.001). Double-lumen tracheal tube insertion was successful when using the CEL-100 in 43 out of 48 patients (90%; 95% CI 81-98%). This occurred on the first attempt in 27 (56%) patients, 14 (29%) on the second and two (4%) on the third. We conclude that the CEL-100 videolaryngoscope is an effective device in this context, and we therefore propose that this device can be used in circumstances when double-lumen tube insertion proves difficult. A new optimization design of the boil-off gas (BOG) reliquefaction process for liquefied ethylene (LEG) vessels is proposed in order to reduce the reliquefaction process energy cost and improve its cold exergy efficiency. The exergy loss of each component is calculated and the efficiency of the available energy utilization is evaluated on the basis of a detailed thermodynamic analysis. The exergy analysis results indicate that the exergy efficiency of the improved BOG reliquefaction process is about 19.0 % higher than that of the existing process, and the amount of refrigerant used in the improved process is reduced by about 44.9 % per hour. The power consumption could be decreased by 16 %. The circulation volumes of the refrigerant and BOG are both significantly reduced, thus lowering the equipment and operation costs of the BOG reliquefaction process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective To evaluate the safety profile of long-term belimumab therapy combined with standard therapy for systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in patients with active disease. Methods Patients who were randomized to receive intravenous placebo or belimumab 1, 4, or 10 mg/kg, plus standard therapy, and completed the initial 52-week double-blind treatment period were then allowed to enter a 24-week open-label extension phase. During the extension period, patients in the belimumab group either received the same dose or were switched to 10 mg/kg and patients in the placebo group were switched to belimumab 10 mg/kg. Patients who achieved a satisfactory response during the 24-week extension period were allowed to participate in the long-term continuation study of monthly belimumab 10 mg/kg. Adverse events (AEs) and abnormal laboratory results were analyzed per 100 patient-years in 1-year intervals. Results Of the 364 patients who completed the 52-week double-blind treatment period, 345 entered the 24-week extension, and 296 continued treatment with belimumab in the long-term continuation study. Safety data through 4 years of belimumab exposure (1,165 cumulative patient-years) are reported. Incidence rates of AEs, severe/serious AEs, infusion reactions, infections, malignancies, grades 3/4 laboratory abnormalities, and discontinuations due to AEs were stable or declined during 4-year belimumab exposure. The most common AEs included arthralgia, upper respiratory tract infection, headache, fatigue, and nausea. Serious infusion reactions were rare: only 1 occurred during the 4-year followup period. Rates of serious infection decreased from 5.9/100 patient-years to 3.4/100 patient-years, and no specific type of infection predominated. Conclusion Belimumab added to standard therapy was generally well-tolerated over the 4-year treatment period in patients with SLE, which suggests that belimumab can be administered long term with an acceptable safety profile. Transparent conductive gallium-doped zinc oxide (Ga-doped ZnO) films were prepared on glass substrate by magnetron sputtering. The influence of substrate temperature on structural, optoelectrical and surface properties of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spectrophotometer, four-point probe and goniometry, respectively. Experimental results show that all the films are found to be oriented along the c-axis. The grain size and optical transmittance of the films increase with increasing substrate temperature. The average transmittance in the visible wavelength range is above 83% for all the samples. It is observed that the optoelectrical property is correlated with the film structure. The Ga-doped ZnO film grown at the substrate temperature of 400 °C has the highest figure of merit of 1.25 × 10−2 Ω−1, the lowest resistivity of 1.56 × 10−3 Ω·cm and the highest surface energy of 32.3 mJ/m2. Objective To assess the effects of the B lymphocyte stimulator (BLyS)-specific inhibitor belimumab on immunologic biomarkers, including B cell and T cell populations, and maintenance of antibody titers to prior vaccines in autoantibody-positive systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Methods Pooled data from 2 phase III trials, the Study of Belimumab in Subjects with SLE 52-week (BLISS-52) and 76-week (BLISS-76) trials, comparing belimumab 1 mg/kg or 10 mg/kg versus placebo (plus standard SLE therapy for each group) were analyzed for changes in autoantibody, immunoglobulin, and complement levels. BLISS-76 patients were also analyzed for changes in B cell and T cell populations and effects on prior vaccine-induced antibody levels. Results Belimumab-treated patients experienced significant sustained reductions in IgG and autoantibodies and improvement in C3/C4 levels, resulting in greater positive-to-negative conversion rates for IgG anti-double-stranded DNA (anti-dsDNA), anti-Sm, anticardiolipin, and anti-ribosomal P autoantibodies and normalization of hypergammaglobulinemia and low C3/C4 levels. Belimumab-treated patients experienced significant decreases in the numbers of naive and activated B cells, as well as plasma cells, whereas memory B cells and T cell populations did not decrease. Belimumab did not substantially affect preexisting antipneumococcal or anti-tetanus toxoid antibody levels. Post hoc analysis showed greater reductions in SLE disease activity and the risk of severe flares in patients treated with belimumab 10 mg/kg ( P ≤ 0.01) who were anti-dsDNA positive and had low C3/C4 levels at baseline. Normalization of the C3 or anti-dsDNA level by 8 weeks, irrespective of therapy, was predictive of a reduced risk of severe flare over 52 weeks. Conclusion Belimumab appears to promote normalization of serologic activity and reduce BLyS-dependent B cell subsets in serologically and clinically active SLE. We performed a randomised trial comparing the CEL-100 videolaryngoscopeTM with the Macintosh laryngoscope blade in 170 patients undergoing double-lumen tube placement for thoracic surgery. Compared with the Macintosh laryngoscope blade, use of the CEL-100 resulted in significantly more patients with a Cormack and Lehane Grade-1 laryngeal view (90.4% vs 61.0%, p < 0.001), a higher rate of successful intubation on the first attempt (92.8% vs 79.3%, p = 0.012), a lower median (IQR [range]) intubation difficulty score (0 (0-0 [0-60]) vs 15 (0-30 [0-80]), p < 0.001), a higher incidence of correct positioning of the tube (90.3% vs 79.2%, p = 0.041) and significantly fewer patients requiring external laryngeal pressure (19.3% vs 32.9%, p = 0.046). Median (IQR [range]) time to successful intubation was 45 (38-55 [22-132]) s with the CEL-100 compared with 51 (40-61 [30-160] s using the Macintosh laryngoscope blade. Objective To assess the efficacy/safety of the B lymphocyte stimulator inhibitor belimumab plus standard therapy compared with placebo plus standard therapy in active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods In a phase III, multicenter, randomized, placebo-controlled trial, 819 antinuclear antibody-positive or anti-double-stranded DNA-positive SLE patients with scores ≥6 on the Safety of Estrogens in Lupus Erythematosus National Assessment (SELENA) version of the SLE Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) were randomized in a 1:1:1 ratio to receive 1 mg/kg belimumab, 10 mg/kg belimumab, or placebo intravenously on days 0, 14, and 28 and then every 28 days for 72 weeks. The primary efficacy end point was the SLE Responder Index (SRI) response rate at week 52 (an SRI response was defined as a ≥4-point reduction in SELENA-SLEDAI score, no new British Isles Lupus Assessment Group [BILAG] A organ domain score and no more than 1 new BILAG B score, and no worsening in physician's global assessment score versus baseline). Results Belimumab at 10 mg/kg plus standard therapy met the primary efficacy end point, generating a significantly greater SRI response at week 52 compared with placebo (43.2% versus 33.5%; P = 0.017). The rate with 1 mg/kg belimumab was 40.6% ( P = 0.089). Response rates at week 76 were 32.4%, 39.1%, and 38.5% with placebo, 1 mg/kg belimumab, and 10 mg/kg belimumab, respectively. In post hoc sensitivity analyses evaluating higher SELENA-SLEDAI score thresholds, 10 mg/kg belimumab achieved better discrimination at weeks 52 and 76. Risk of severe flares over 76 weeks (based on the modified SLE Flare Index) was reduced with 1 mg/kg belimumab (34%) ( P = 0.023) and 10 mg/kg belimumab (23%) ( P = 0.13). Serious and severe adverse events, including infections, laboratory abnormalities, malignancies, and deaths, were comparable across groups. The aim of this investigation was to determine whether tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) has any effect on endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). Total mononuclear cells were isolated from peripheral blood by Ficoll density gradient centrifugation, and then the cells were plated on fibronectin-coated culture dishes. After 7 days culture, attached cells were stimulated with tumour necrosis factor-α (final concentrations: 0, 10, 20, 50 and 100 mg/l) for 0, 6, 12, 24 and 48 h. EPCs were characterized as adherent cells double positive for DiLDL-uptake and lectin binding, by direct fluorescence staining. EPC proliferation and migration were assayed using the MTT assay and modified Boyden chamber assay, respectively. EPC adhesion assay was performed by re-plating those cells on fibronectin-coated dishes, and adherent cells were counted. Tube formation activity was assayed using a tube formation kit. Levels of apoptosis were revealed using an annexin V apoptosis detection kit. Vascular endothelial growth factor Receptor-1 (VEGF-R1) and stromal derived factor-1 (SDF-1) mRNA, assessed by real-time RT-PCR inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) were assayed by western blot analysis. Incubation of EPCs with tumour necrosis factor-α reduced EPC proliferation, migration, adhesion, tube formation capacity, iNOS and eNOS in concentration- and time-dependent manners. Tumour necrosis factor-α reduced proliferation, migration, adhesion and tube formation capacity of EPCs. Foliated (garnet-bearing) (FGB) granites are associated closely with and are usually the major wall rocks of the high-pressure (HP) and ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks in the Tongbai-Dabie region, the mid segment of the Qinling-Dabie-Sulu orogenic belt in central China. These granites appear either as small plutons or as veins, which commonly intrude into or surround the HP and UHP metamorphic eclogites or gneisses. The veins of FGB granites usually penetrate into the retrograded eclogites or gneisses along the foliations. Condensation rims can occasionally be found along the margins of granite veins. These granites are rich in Si and alkali with high Ga/Al ratios, and depleted in Ca, Mg, Al, Ti, Sc, V, Ni, Co, Cr and Sr, which are similar to A-type granites. In a chondrite normalized diagram, the samples are light rare earth elements enriched with different extent of negative Eu anomaly. Moreover, Rb, Nb, Ta, Sr, P and Ti show different degrees of negative anomalies, whereas Ba, K, La, Zr and Hf show positive anomalies in the primitive mantle normalized diagram. Negative anomalies of Eu and Sr indicate strong influence of plagioclase. In conventional discrimination diagrams, these FGB granites belong to the A-type granite, with geochemical characteristics affinitive to post-collisional granites. The εNd (230 Ma) values (−15.80 to −2.52) and TDM values (1.02–2.07 Ga) suggest that magma for the FGB granites were derived from a heterogeneous crustal source. Therefore, the FGB granites may provide clues for deciphering the formation of post-collisional granites. It is proposed that the magma of the FGB granites both in the HP and UHP units was formed in an extensional tectonic setting slightly post-dating the HP and UHP metamorphism, most likely as a result of decompressional partial melting of UHP retrograded eclogites during exhumation. Diffuse X-ray scattering has been an important tool for understanding the atomic structure of binary systems for more than 50 years. The majority of studies have used laboratory-based sources providing 8 keV photons or synchrotron radiation with similar energies. Diffuse scattering is weak, with the scattering volume determined by the X-ray absorption length. In the case of 8 keV photons, this is not significantly different from the typical extinction length for Bragg scattering. If, however, one goes to energies of the order of 100 keV the scattering volume for the diffuse scattering increases up to three orders of magnitude while the extinction length increases by only one order of magnitude. This leads to a gain of two orders of magnitude in the relative intensity of the diffuse scattering compared with the Bragg peaks. This gain, combined with the possibility of recording the intensity from an entire plane in reciprocal space using a two-dimensional X-ray detector, permits time-resolved diffuse scattering studies in many systems. On the other hand, diffraction features that are usually neglected, such as multiple scattering, come into play. Cold drawing of steel wires leads to an increase of their mechanical strength and to a drop in their ductility. The increase of their mechanical strength has long been related to the reduction of the various material scales by an intense plastic deformation. Besides, it was discussed in the companion paper that large plastic deformation leads to the loss of the material hardening capabilities and that, in such a case, residual stresses preserve the elongation to failure of wires. Experimental measurements of residual stresses inside the wire have therefore been undertaken. In this paper, lattice parameters as measured using synchrotron diffraction are compared with those calculated using the residual stress fields as determined by the finite-element method. There is a major disagreement between experimental and numerical results that is too large to be attributed to the errors of the finite-element analyses. Therefore, neutron diffraction experiments have also been performed. These measurements show that there is a significant variation of the lattice parameter with the drawing level, which is not inherited from residual stresses, and that variation is very sensitive to the cooling rate after processing. It is therefore proposed that cold drawing would induce a phase transformation of the steel, possibly a martensitic transformation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
