Artificial compound eye (CE) draws inspiration from nature, offering advanced imaging capabilities and an expansive field of view. In this work, an innovative technique is developed for the creation of CE with tunable dimensions. A solution‐based process is employed that involves in situ polymerization of surface nanodroplets prior to soft lithography to produce CE consisting of millions of ommatidia. The fabricated CE comprised of a densely arranged array of microwells, each with a base radius of 5 µm. Situated on a millimeter‐sized spherical dome, the CE can be tailored to arbitrary dimensions, enhancing its adaptability with a wide angular field of view up to 118°. The CE is used to enhance signal detection in fluorescent compounds, reaching a detection limit of 107 times lower concentration than that without using CEs in bulk solution. The signal enhancement capabilities are further utilized for surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy by using a portable handheld device, with an enhancement factor of 2. The fabrication technique underscores the advantages of the approach in simplicity, reproducibility, and efficiency in creating CE. As a type of diverse and structurally adjustable metal‐oxo clusters, polyoxometalates (POMs) based materials have been extensively applied as a catalysis in various valuable reactions. This review summarized recent progress in the application of POMs‐based catalysts for various carbonylation reactions including (1). Carbonylation of olefins, (2). Carbonylation of formaldehyde, (3). Carbonylation of methanol or dimethyl ether, (4). Oxidative carbonylation of methane, (5). Oxidative carbonylation of phenol and (6). Reductive carbonylation of nitrobenzene. BACKGROUND: Potentilla anserina L. is rich in various nutrients, active ingredients and unique flavor, comprising a natural nutrition and health food. However, its application in aquatic food has been rarely reported. Therefore, the effects of Potentilla anserina L. powder (PAP) on gel properties and volatile flavor profile of silver carp surimi were investigated. RESULTS: The gel strength and water‐holding capacity of the surimi gels were significantly improved (P < 0.05), and the whiteness and cooking loss of all the samples decreased slightly with the increase in PAP content. The addition of PAP shortened the relaxation time (T2) of the surimi gels and converted some of the free water into immobile or bound water, which resulted in a better immobilization of water in the surimi. Scanning electron microscopy images demonstrated that the network of surimi gels with PAP added was denser and had a smoother surface compared to the control. Volatile components (VCs) analysis showed that 33 VCs were identified in the surimi gel samples with different additions of PAP, among which aldehydes, alcohols and esters were the major VCs, accounting for more than 50% of the VCs in the surimi gels. PAP addition reduced the fishy and rancid flavor compounds in surimi gels, such as 1‐propanol, 1‐octen‐3‐ol, etc., and promoted the production of aldehydes, alcohols, esters and other flavor substances. Hydrogenation of N‐heteroarenes to saturated N‐heterocycles is an important reaction in organic synthesis. Hydrogen is a green reducing reagent and has been widely applied in industrial production. The development of an appropriate catalyst to realize hydrogenation at low pressure and temperature is desired. In this study, we developed a cobalt‐based catalyst derived from ZIF‐67 that exhibits high activity for N‐heteroarene hydrogenation under 5–20 bar hydrogen, which is a relatively low pressure as compared to reported catalytic systems. The ability to transfer microdroplets between fluid phases offers numerous advantages in various fields. This study focuses on the stability and morphology of a sessile oil microdropletduring the transfer from underwater to air. A distinct transition in microdroplet dynamics is observed, characterized by a shift from a scenario dominated by Marangoni forces to one dominated by capillary forces. In the former regime, the oil microdroplets spread in response to the contact between the water‐air interface and the water‐oil interface. The spreading distance follows a power law relationship of t3/4, reflecting the balance between Marangoni forces and viscous forces. On the other hand, in the capillarity‐dominated regime, the oil microdroplets remain stable at the contact line and after being transferred into the air. The crossover between these two regimes is identified in the parameter space defined by three factors: the approaching velocity of the solid‐water‐air contact line (vcl), the radius of the oil microdroplet (ro), and the radius of the water drop (rw). Furthermore, how to use the four‐phase contact line for shaping oil microdroplets is demonstrated using a full liquid process by the contact line lithography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Designing of innovative technologies for the development of functional materials remain crucial for achieving sustainable technological advancements. In this regard, nanoparticles (NPs) possessing enormous potential properties can be obtained using various facile methods for several applications. Adopting NPs as primitive building blocks can initiate the formation of complex entities named supraparticle (SP) to create several advanced functional materials. Additionally, SPs enable entirely new material characteristics to the system, owing to their individual entities, intrinsic properties such as coupling, spatial arrangement, and co‐localization. Indeed, methods such as template‐induced evaporation‐based assembly of NPs direct the shape, size, and morphology of SPs from their respective colloidal dispersions on a solvent‐repellant solid surface. Therefore, it is important to comprehend the formation of SPs and their structure‐property relationship with respect to practical application. This review presents a brief overview of SPs assembly by outlining the templated‐assisted evaporation‐based methodologies for synthesizing SPs. Further, the effect of various factors on the interaction between colloidal entities, solvent, and substrate, leading to the genesis of SPs is elaborated. Conclusively, specific properties are described and applications of SPs for energy storage, generation, and environmental remediation are reported, which collectively brings many interdisciplinary research fields to the same podium. A low palladium‐loading heterogeneous catalyst has been developed for the hydrolysis of hydrosilanes to silanols and alkoxysilanes under mild and neutral reaction conditions with broad substrate scope. Lithium‐mediated electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (Li‐NRR) completely eschews the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) occurred in aqueous system, whereas the continuous deposition of lithium readily blocks the active sites and further reduces the reaction kinetics. Herein, we propose an innovative in situ Li migration strategy to realize that Li substitutes Mn sites in λ‐MnO2 instead of evolving into the dead Li. Comprehensive characterizations corroborate that the intercalation of Li+ at high voltage breaks the structural integrity of MnO6 octahedron and further triggers unique Jahn–Teller distortions, which promotes the spin state regulation of Mn sites to generate the ameliorative eg orbital configuration and accelerates N≡N bond cleavage via eg‐σ and eg‐π* interaction. To this end, the resulted cationic disordered LiMnO4 delivers the recorded highest NH3 yield rate of 220 μg h−1 cm−2 and a Faradaic efficiency (FE) 83.80 % in organic electrolyte. Solar‐driven water treatment suffers from low efficiency due to the solar energy loss during the energy conversion, especially in the scale‐up operation. One promising solution is using microlenses (MLs) to enhance the photodegradation of organic contaminants in water. However, most MLs fabrications apply to 2D planar surface only, which restricts their potential applications. In this study, a flexible and scalable technology is presented to fabricate MLs on curved surfaces. Precursor microdroplets form in a dilution process and are converted to MLs by photopolymerization. Optical simulations and experiments are combined to establish the correlation between optical properties of MLs and the performance of ML‐functionalized reactors in photodegradation. It is demonstrated that surface MLs on all‐shaped reactors significantly enhance the photodegradation efficiency of organic contaminants under simulated solar light or natural indoor light, with a maximum improvement of 83 folds. The surface coverage and size distribution of MLs can be adjusted by varying the solution concentration and the dilution rate when generating microdroplets. In addition, fabrication of MLs on a larger scale is achieved over an area up to 250 cm2 $\left(\text{cm}\right)^{2}$. In this work, a coherent and cost‐effective method is developed to achieve superhydrophobicity and excellent corrosion resistance on Q345B steel surfaces. The method involves sequential etching with hydrochloric acid and hydrofluoric acid, passivation with potassium permanganate, treatment with bis‐(γ‐triethoxysilylpropyl)‐tetrasulfide (KHSi69，BT), and modification with hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles. The effects of etching and passivation time, including SiO2 doping ratio on the wettability and corrosion resistance of the prepared surfaces are investigated. The results demonstrate that the surface exhibits a micro–nano multilayer and modified nano‐multiscale cluster structure which has a contact angle (CA) of 155.8 ± 1.7° and a sliding angle (SA) of 5 ± 0.5° by employing the following conditions: hydrochloric acid etching time of 10 min, hydrofluoric acid etching time of 25 min, passivation time of 300 min, and a 3 wt% SiO2 doping ratio. Moreover, the surface displays extremely weak droplet adhesion and excellent self‐cleaning properties. Furthermore, the corrosion inhibition of the prepared steel surface is evaluated using potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results indicate that the corrosion inhibition efficiency of the superhydrophobic surface is enhanced by about 89.95% compared to the traditional two‐step processing involving etching and modification. Switchable hydrophilicity solvents (SHSs) are a unique class of chemical compounds that can be switched between their hydrophobic and hydrophilic forms. The switchable characteristics allow SHSs to be used as emerging, green solvents for sustainable extraction and separation technology. In the production of polymeric microparticles from recycled plastics, SHSs are used to dissolve the polymer and then are switched to the hydrophilic form for separation from the generated polymeric microparticles. However, it is extremely difficult to fully recover the SHS residue from the mixtures. In this work, we will identify the key parameters that determine the level of the solvent residue during the switched‐on dissolution of emulsion microdroplets. The SHS N,N‐dimethylcyclohexylamine from solvent–polymer binary emulsion droplets was switched to the hydrophilic, water‐soluble form, triggered by addition of an acid in the surrounding aqueous phase. By applying a sensitive detection method developed in this work, we compared the levels of SHS residue in polymer microparticles obtained under 30 different dynamical and chemical conditions for the switching processes. The quantitative analysis revealed that residue levels remained constant at varied addition rates and concentration of the trigger solution, but decreased with the increase in organic phase fractions or the decrease in the emulsion temperature. Trapped water in the drops during switched‐on dissolution may have contributed to the high level of solvent residue. The understanding of the new possible mechanism for residual solvent reported in this work may help develop effective approaches for the recovery of switchable solvents in environmentally friendly separation processes. Recently, the need for miniaturization and high integration have steered a strong technical wave in developing (micro‐)electronic devices. However, excessive amounts of heat may be generated during operation/charging, severely affecting device performance and leading to life/property loss. Benefiting from their low density, easy processing and low manufacturing cost, thermally conductive polymer composites have become a research hotspot to mitigate the disadvantage of excessive heat, with potential applications in 5G communication, electronic packaging and energy transmission. By far, the reported thermal conductivity coefficient (λ) of thermally conductive polymer composite is far from expectation. Deeper understanding of heat transfer mechanism is desired for developing next generation thermally conductive composites. This review holistically scopes current advances in this field, while giving special attention to critical factors that affect thermal conductivity in polymer composites as well as the thermal conduction mechanisms on how to enhance the λ value. This review covers critical factors such as interfacial thermal resistance, chain structure of polymer, intrinsic λ value of different thermally conductive fillers, orientation/configuration of nanoparticles, 3D interconnected networks, processing technology, etc. The applications of thermally conductive polymer composites in electronic devices are summarized. A seamless and tough interface to integrate incompatible/immiscible soft materials is highly desired for flexible/wearable electronics and many soft devices with multi‐layer structures. Here, a surfactant‐mediated interfacial chemistry is introduced to achieve seamless and tough interfaces in soft multi‐layer structures, with an ultra‐high interfacial toughness up to ≈1300 J m−2 for the architectural gel hybrid (AGH). The reversible noncovalent interfacial interactions efficiently dissipate energy at the interface, thereby providing excellent durability. The interfacial toughness only decreases by ≈6.9% after 10 000 tensile cycles. This strategy can be universally applied to hybrid systems with various interfaces between an interior hydrogel (PAA, PVA, PAAm, and gelatin) and an exterior hydrophobic soft matter (ionogel, lipogel and elastomer). The AGH‐based mechano‐sensor presents high robustness and stability in a wide range of conditions, including open air, underwater, and various solvents and temperatures. Epidermal bio‐monitoring, tactile trajectory, and facial expression recognition are demonstrated using the AGH sensors in various environments. This work demonstrates an original and ultrasensitive approach for surface‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection based on evaporation of self‐lubricating drops containing silver supraparticles. The developed method detects an extremely low concentration of analyte that is enriched and concentrated on sensitive SERS sites of the compact supraparticles formed from drop evaporation. A low limit of detection of 10−16m is achieved for a model hydrophobic compound rhodamine 6G (R6G). The quantitative analysis of R6G concentration is obtained from 10−5 to 10−11m. In addition, for a model micro‐pollutant in water triclosan, the detection limit of 10−6m is achieved by using microliter sample solutions. The intensity of SERS detection in this approach is robust to the dispersity of the nanoparticles in the drop but became stronger after a longer drying time. The ultrasensitive detection mechanism is the sequential process of concentration, extraction, and absorption of the analyte during evaporation of self‐lubrication drop and hot spot generation for intensification of SERS signals. This novel approach for sample preparation in ultrasensitive SERS detection can be applied to the detection of chemical and biological signatures in areas such as environment monitoring, food safety, and biomedical diagnostics. Osthole, a coumarin compound derived from Fructus Cnidii, exerts anti-inflammatory effects in an asthma model. But the effect of osthole on epithelial injury and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in asthma remains unclear. 16HBE cells were incubated with TGF-β1 with or without osthole in vitro. Ovalbumin (OVA)-induced asthmatic mouse model was established in vivo. Cell counting kit-8 was carried out to evaluate the viability of 16HBE cells. The impact of osthole on TGF-β1-evoked cell apoptosis and EMT process was measured by flow cytometry based on Annexin V-FITC/PI staining, transwell assay, immunofluorescence, and Western blot. The regulatory role of osthole in TGF-β1/Smad and p38, ERK1/2, and JNK MAPK signaling was detected via Western blot. Osthole treatment significantly suppressed TGF-β1-induced 16HBE cell apoptosis, verified by a reduced percentage of apoptotic cells, decreased expression of proapoptotic proteins (cleaved-caspase3 and Bax), and enhanced antiapoptotic factor (Bcl-2) expression. In addition, the promotive impact of TGF-β1 on the migration of 16HBE cells was reversed by osthole, accompanied by elevated E-cadherin expression and reduced Snail and N-cadherin expression. The activation of the Smad2/3 and MAPKs pathway evoked by TGF-β1 was inhibited by osthole in 16HBE cells. We also found that osthole mitigated airway epithelium injury and subepithelial fibrosis in OVA-challenged asthmatic mice in vivo. Osthole could mitigate TGF-β1-induced epithelial cell injury and EMT process by suppressing the activation of MAPK and Smad2/3 pathways separately. Our present study showed a new insight into understanding the underlying mechanism of osthole injury on epithelium injury and subepithelial fibrosis in airway remodeling. Droplets are excellent platforms for compartmentalization of many processes such as chemical reactions, liquid–liquid extraction, and biological or chemical analyses. Accurately controlling and optimizing the composition of these droplets is of high importance to maximize their functionality. In this work, the formation of multicomponent droplets with controllable composition by employing a continuous flow‐in setup is demonstrated. Multiple streams of different oil solutions are introduced and mixed in a passive flow mixer and the outcoming mixture is subsequently fed into a flow chamber to form surface nanodroplets by solvent exchange. This method is time‐effective, enabling programmable continuous processes for droplet formation and surface cleaning. The surface nanodroplets are formed within 2.5 min in one cycle, and the droplet formation is reliable with similar size distribution over multiple cycles. The composition of the resulting surface nanodroplet can be tuned at will simply by controlling the flow rate ratios of each stream of the oil solution. Using fluorescence imaging, it is shown that the composition of the binary surface nanodroplets agrees well with theoretical values predicted using the phase diagram. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tunneling dynamics are investigated theoretically in ring shaped lattice with a site shifted periodically with respect to the others. A surprising finding on parity‐induced localization suggests that localization in the driven ring lattice can be generally divided into two types: odd‐parity‐induced localization and even‐parity‐induced localization, depending on the parity of number of quasi‐energy levels. Moreover, odd‐parity‐induced localization is proved to have its own distinct feature and it is not the crucial requirement to be an exact zero quasi‐energy state of classic dark state form for broad suppression of tunneling. Canola (Brassica napus) is the major oilseed crop in Canada. Blackleg (Leptosphaeria maculans) causes yield losses annually, with a larger impact in the last two decades caused by breakdown of resistance in growers' fields. A 4‐year small‐plot field study from 2014 to 2017 in Manitoba investigated the impact of the B. napus–L. maculans interaction on the emergence of virulent isolates towards specific R genes. Doubled haploid B. napus 'Topas' introgression lines carrying single R genes were used, with a 2‐year canola–wheat rotation. Blackleg incidence was reduced by 40% in 2017 compared to 2014 for all R genes tested except Rlm4. In 2017, disease severity was reduced between 21% and 52% compared to 2014 for all R genes tested except Rlm2. There was a significant shift from AvrLm2 and AvrLm4 to virulent alleles avrLm2 and avrLm4, respectively, which led to the gain of virulence toward Rlm2 and Rlm4 Topas introgression lines within a year. Sequencing of the AvrLm2 gene of isolates from 2014 and 2015 revealed a shift of AvrLm2 to avrLm2 allele due to accumulation of point mutations. Masking of AvrLm3 phenotype by the presence of the AvrLm4‐7 allele was also confirmed by analysing phenotypes and genotypes of the isolates collected from 2014 to 2017. Based on these and previous findings, we demonstrate the need for an epidemiological model that takes into account complex molecular mechanisms allowing plant breeders to select appropriate R genes, including balanced cultivar rotation strategies to maintain blackleg resistance in the Canadian Prairies. In this work, the solvent‐exchange crystallization processes of beta‐alanine in mixture of isopropanol and water on solid surfaces are reported. As the antisolvent isopropanol displaces the alanine solution pre‐filled in a microchamber, liquid–liquid phase separation occurs at the mixing front. The alanine‐rich subphase forms surface microdroplets that subsequently crystallize with during the solvent exchange. It is found that the flow rates and solid surfaces have significant influence on the droplet size, growth rate, and crystal size and morphology. At fast flow rates, the droplets solidify rapidly, forming spherical‐cap structures resembling the shape of droplets, in contrast to crystal microdomains or thin films formed at slow flow rates. On a highly hydrophilic surface, the crystals form thin film without droplets formation. It is further demonstrated that by the solvent exchange, the crystals, generated by using a stock solution with a very low concentration of the precursor, can be used as seeds to facilitate crystallization in bulk solution. The results suggest that the solvent exchange has the potential to be an effective approach for controlling oiling‐out crystallization, and to be wider applied in, such as, separation and purification of many food, medical, and therapeutic ingredients. Summary: Electrocatalytical conversion of CO2 into various chemicals like hydrocarbons and CO is regarded as a promising approach to mitigate carbon emission and, meanwhile, to provide sustainable energy and value‐added chemicals. Two different reactors are used in this work. One is based upon the two‐electrode configuration powered by a DC power supply or Si solar cell, which is suitable for practical applications. Another is three‐electrode one powered by a potentiostat, which is feasible to study the electrode performance. Polycrystalline Cu electrode is used as the cathode, and hematite is the anode. Performance of CO2 reduction using the two‐ and three‐electrode configurations is studied by measuring electrode potential, cell voltage, current density, Faradaic efficiency, and reduction selectivity of CO2. Cu cathode used here exhibits a low overpotential for CO2 reduction, specifically for the cell with two‐electrode configuration. No obvious difference can be observed between the two types of configurations at a low bias like −0.3 and −0.4 V; while the reactor with two‐electrode configuration exhibits better performance at a high bias like −0.8 V than the one with three‐electrode configuration. Thus, the reactors with two‐electrode configuration are desirable for practical applications, specifically considering solar cells can be used as the power source to provide green and sustainable energy. The acid‐aided heterobimetallic ruthenium‐cobalt catalytic system for the reductive hydroformylation with carbon dioxide was established. Various alkenes, including waste from biomass and petroleum industry, could be upgraded to valuable alcohols with this protocol. Acid‐promoted reverse water‐gas shift (RWGS), thereby accelerating the hydroformylative synthesis of alcohol. The theoretical computations revealed that acid promoted RWGS by facilitating the dehydroxylation of ruthenium hydroxy carbonyl intermediate. Accelerated by acid: The acid‐aided heterobimetallic ruthenium‐cobalt catalytic system exhibited good performance in the hydroformylative synthesis of alcohols with carbon dioxide. The applicability of the valorization of industrial waste was highlighted. Experiments and theoretical computations demonstrated that addition of acetic acid could effectively accelerate the reductive hydroformylation by promoting reverse water‐gas shift. Abstract: Leptosphaeria maculans is the most important fungal pathogen of canola (Brassica napus, oilseed rape) that causes the devastating stem canker in canola fields of western Canada. The population genetic structure of L. maculans, represented by nine subpopulations from a 6‐year period and three different provinces in western Canada, was determined using ten minisatellite markers. Isolates collected at different locations in six consecutive years had an even distribution of MAT1‐1 and MAT1‐2 across the nine subpopulations. All subpopulations of L. maculans exhibited a moderate gene diversity (H = 0.356–0.585). The majority of the genetic variation occurred within subpopulations. Approximately 8% and 4% of the variations were distributed between sampling year and location, respectively. Genetic distance (FST) results, using analysis of molecular variation (AMOVA), indicated that subpopulation pairing within isolates by year ranged from FST = 0.010 to 0.109, and the location subpopulation ranged from FST = 0.038 to 0.085. Bayesian clustering analyses of multiloci inferred two distinct clusters in all the subpopulations examined. This study indicates a relatively high degree of gene exchange between the different L. maculans isolates. Our results suggest that this can occur in the wide growing areas of canola fields in western Canada. This gene exchange produced different gene allele frequencies and divergence between populations. Recently, solvent exchange has been demonstrated as a simple solution-based approach for the controlled formation of surface nanodroplets over large areas. The as-formed surface nanodroplets provide new opportunities for a wide range of droplet-based applications. Herein, it is demonstrated that surface nanodroplets can be used as versatile structural templates for the fabrication of functional surfaces with tailored wettability and morphology. Guided by the microstructural and wetting properties of desert beetle's back and cactus spine, two types of functional surfaces have been prepared. The first biomimetic surface of desert beetle's back, with hydrophilic lumps on a hydrophobic background, was obtained by independent selective surface modification of polymerized surface nanodroplets and the background surface. The second surface, with anisotropic wetting microstructures, was fabricated by controlled deposition of droplets on the rim of polymer lenses. The results showed systematic improvement of wettability and efficiency of water collection by using the as-prepared biomimetic surfaces, compared with substrates without the designed microstructures. The hemibiotrophic fungal pathogen Leptosphaeria maculans is the causal agent of blackleg disease in Brassica napus (canola, oilseed rape) and causes significant loss of yield worldwide. While genetic resistance has been used to mitigate the disease by means of traditional breeding strategies, there is little knowledge about the genes that contribute to blackleg resistance. RNA sequencing and a streamlined bioinformatics pipeline identified unique genes and plant defense pathways specific to plant resistance in the B. napus-L. maculans LepR1-AvrLepR1 interaction over time. We complemented our temporal analyses by monitoring gene activity directly at the infection site using laser microdissection coupled to quantitative PCR. Finally, we characterized genes involved in plant resistance to blackleg in the Arabidopsis- L. maculans model pathosystem. Data reveal an accelerated activation of the plant transcriptome in resistant host cotyledons associated with transcripts coding for extracellular receptors and phytohormone signaling molecules. Functional characterization provides direct support for transcriptome data and positively identifies resistance regulators in the Brassicaceae. Spatial gradients of gene activity were identified in response to L. maculans proximal to the site of infection. This dataset provides unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution of the genes required for blackleg resistance and serves as a valuable resource for those interested in host-pathogen interactions. We report the synthesis of highly flexible and mechanically robust hybrid silica nanowires (NWs) which can be used as novel building blocks to construct superhydrophobic functional materials with three-dimensional macroporous networks. The hybrid silica NWs, with an average diameter of 80 nm and tunable length of up to 12 μm, are prepared by anisotropic deposition of the hydrolyzed tetraethylorthosilicate in water/n-pentanol emulsions. A mechanistic investigation reveals that the trimethoxy(octadecyl)silane introduced to the water-oil interface in the synthesis plays key roles in stabilizing the water droplets to sub-100 nm and also growing a layer of octadecyl groups on the NW surface. This work opens a solution-based route for the one-pot preparation of monodisperse, hydrophobic silica NWs and represents an important step toward the bottom-up construction of 3D superhydrophobic materials and macroporous membranes. This paper explores how and why Chinese courts became involved in regulating pollution by aiding administrative agencies in executing sanction decisions and collecting pollution levies. It also studies the effects of their regulatory involvement, both in terms of deterrence inferred from available information, as well as the compliance behavior of regulated actors defined as payment of regulatory penalties. It finds that judicial involvement in regulatory enforcement proved to be short-lived and depended on a particular context at a particular period of time when a regulatory need coincided with administrative and financial judicial needs and particular judges. The paper also finds that court involvement enhanced deterrence in terms of certainty of punishment and to some extent the severity of punishment; however that deterrent effect was undermined by the close relationship between the courts and the regulated entities as fines and levies were almost always negotiated. Hyzetimibe (HS-25) is a new cholesterol absorption inhibitor. We performed the first-in-human study to assess the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics (including the effect of food) and pharmacodynamics (effect on blood lipid level) following single (1, 3, 5, 10, 20, and 30 mg) and multiple (5, 10, and 20 mg) ascending-dose of hyzetimibe in healthy subjects. An increase of exposure (area under the plasma concentration-time curve and maximum plasma concentration) to hyzetimibe and hyzetimibe-glucuronide (HS-25M1) was observed in an approximately dose-proportional manner. A terminal half-life of approximately 21 hours was observed with doses ranging between 5 and 30 mg. Steady state was achieved by day 8 of once-daily dosing with 1.6- and 1.2-fold accumulation for hyzetimibe and hyzetimibe-glucuronide, respectively. Food did not have any effect on hyzetimibe and hyzetimibe-glucuronide exposure. Administration of hyzetimibe once daily for 10 days reduced the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in healthy subjects and these recovered after discontinuation of this drug. All of the adverse events were mild or moderate in severity, and the majority of them were unrelated to hyzetimibe, with no dose-dependent trends. Monolithic and crack-free disks of PDMS-modified CaO-SiO2 hybrids were obtained by a hydrolysis and polycondensation of poly (dimethylsiloxane), tetraethoxysilane, calcium nitrate. The bone-forming bioactivity of the as-obtained hybrids was influenced by some parameters, including surface morphology, microstructure and mesophase. It should be mentioned here that the heat treatment temperature plays an important part on the microstructural property and the bioactivity of the hybrids. The bioactivity of the hybrids was also evaluated by immersing the specimen in the simulated body fluid (SBF), and results indicate that it can be significantly improved by the porosity of the hybrids, which can be tuned by controlling the solvent evaporation temperature during the thermal process rigorously. Preconcentration is key for detection from an extremely low concentration solution, but requires separation steps from a large volume of samples using extracting solvents. Here, a simple approach is presented for ultrafast and sensitive microanalysis from a tiny volume of aqueous solutions. In this approach, liquid–liquid nanoextraction in an evaporating thin liquid film on a spinning substrate is coupled with quantitative analysis in one step. The approach is exemplified using a liquid mixture comprising a target compound to be analyzed in water, mixed with extractant oil and co‐solvent ethanol. With rapid evaporation of ethanol, nanodroplets of oil form spontaneously in the film. The compounds are highly concentrated by liquid evaporation and meanwhile extracted to nanodroplets. A detection limit of nanomolar to picomolar is demonstrated for fluorescent model compounds in only ≈5 µL of solution with the entire process taking ≈10 s. The combination of nanoextraction and infrared microscopy also enables simultaneous chemical identification. The dynamics of thin film evaporation are revealed using fast imaging. The principle behind this approach is general, providing a powerful technique for fast and sensitive chemical analysis of a vast library of compounds for environment monitoring, national security, early diagnosis, and many other applications. Microdents fabricated on solid substrates have numerous applications, such as containers for cell growth, reactors for chemical reactions, and nucleation sites for growing photonic crystals. In this study, a new method is developed to fabricate microdents on polystyrene (PS) film deposited on a solid surface. The process relied on Ouzo effect in a ternary solution consisting of three solvents exhibiting different volatilities. In the ternary solution, precursor water droplets are first nucleated when a good solvent of water evaporated. The nucleated water droplets then act as templates for microdent formation during PS film deposition. After water droplets eventually evaporates, microdents are generated on the PS film. The detailed process of microdent formation is experimentally revealed. By controlling the nucleation of water droplets and PS concentration, the lateral size and the depth of microdents are systematically tuned. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the microdent decorated films obtained with the proposed method can be used to fabricate lubricating surfaces, which exhibit a low contact angle hysteresis of 2°. Schizandrin is a major bioactive constituent of Schisandra chinensis (Turcz.) Baill with antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory properties. The objective of this study was to explore the potential effects of schizandrin on a cell model of myocarditis. The H9c2 cells were treated with schizandrin alone or in combination with lipopolysaccharide (LPS), after which, cell survival, migration, and the release of inflammatory cytokines were assessed. Moreover, downstream effectors and signaling pathways were studied to reveal the possible underlying mechanism. As a result, LPS stimulation induced significant cell damage as cell viability was repressed and the apoptosis was induced. In the meantime, LPS promoted the release of proinflammatory cytokines including interleukin 1β (IL‐1β), IL‐8, IL‐6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF‐α) while repressing the release of the anti‐inflammatory cytokine IL‐10. Schizandrin could promote H9c2 cell migration and long‐term treatment (7 days) enhanced cell viability. More interestingly, pretreatment with schizandrin attenuated LPS‐induced cell loss and inflammatory response. Besides this, Smad3 was a downstream effector of schizandrin. The beneficial effects of schizandrin on the H9c2 cells were attenuated when Smad3 was overexpressed. Moreover, the silencing of Smad3 deactivated c‐Jun N‐terminal kinase (JNK) and nuclear factor κB (NF‐κB) pathways. This study preliminarily demonstrated that schizandrin prevented LPS‐induced injury in the H9c2 cells and promoted the recovery of myocardial tissues by enhancing cell viability and migration. Schizandrin conferred its beneficial effects possibly by downregulating Smad3 and inhibiting the activation of JNK and NF‐κB pathways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
