Aim: Enzymatic antioxidants are the primary line of defense against oxidative and nitrosative stress. However, their involvement in the progression of periodontitis is still not well understood. The study aimed to determine the activity of enzymatic antioxidants in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) and saliva of patients with periodontitis. Materials and methods: The study group of 56 patients with periodontitis (stage III and IV) and 28 healthy controls were involved. The modified plaque index, probing depth, the clinical attachment level, the percentage of sites with bleeding on probing, papilla bleeding index, and maximum value of tooth mobility (Periotest®) were tested. Saliva (stimulated and non‐stimulated) and GCF were collected from the participants, and activity of peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione reductase were determined colorimetrically. Results: Lower activity of peroxidase (p < 0.0001), catalase (p < 0.0001), superoxide dismutase (p = 0.0188), and glutathione reductase (p < 0.0001) was noted in non‐stimulated saliva of patients with periodontitis compared to healthy subjects. Peroxidase (p < 0.0001), catalase (p < 0.0001) and superoxide dismutase (p < 0.0001) showed lower activity in stimulated saliva of patients with periodontitis compared to healthy subjects. The peroxidase (p < 0.0029), catalase (p < 0.0001), and glutathione reductase (p = 0.0028) activity in GCF of stage III + IV were significantly higher compared to healthy controls. Superoxide dismutase (p < 0.0001) showed lower activity in GCF of patients with periodontitis. Conclusions: The demonstrated decrease in activity of all analyzed enzymatic antioxidants in non‐stimulated saliva may result from long‐lasting periodontitis and exhaustion of the safeguard mechanism against reactive oxygen species. The results of a study on latexes obtained by emulsion copolymerization of acrylic, methacrylic and vinyl monomers without surfactants are presented. The monomers included ethyl acrylate and butyl acrylate, methyl and butyl methacrylate and methacrylic acid. The yield of the copolymerization reaction, the polymer concentration in the latex, the pH, surface tension, intrinsic viscosity number, Huggins constant, the molecular weight of the polymer and the particle size in the latex were determined. The stability of the latexes was tested by determining the values of non‐overt and overt coagulation thresholds. The values of the limiting equivalent conductivity and the anode zeta potential were determined. The relative hardness of latex membranes and their mass change after hot water extraction were investigated. The relationships between the properties of individual latexes were established. The main aim of the research was to determine the influence of copolymer composition on the electrokinetic properties of polymer particles in latex. Research Question/Issue: The desire to structure bankers' remuneration in a way that it is risk sensitive and aligned with the long‐term incentives of their institutions was at the center of the post Global Financial Crisis (GFC) regulatory reforms. A decade later, it is unclear whether the reforms achieved what they were intended for and whether they have resulted in some unintended consequences. The issue of unintended consequences is particularly important given that the banking sector needs to embrace technological innovation (Fintech) and the sustainable banking agenda. Research Findings/Insights: We are still far from understanding the real costs and benefits of the remuneration reforms because it is difficult to isolate the impact of remuneration restrictions from the impact other regulations and policies had on restricting risk taking, banking structures and bonus culture. However, even if it is questionable whether the remuneration reforms contributed significantly towards improving the stability of the banking sector, they seem unsuitable for promoting Fintech and the sustainable banking agenda. Theoretical/Academic Implications: The post‐GFC remuneration reforms may not sufficiently align bankers with stakeholders' interests which is essential to promote adoption of Fintech and sustainable banking agenda. Practitioner/Policy Implications: The lack of in‐depth understanding of the effects of the remuneration reforms creates a barrier to understand the impact of the reforms on how banks innovate to adopt Fintech and the sustainable banking agenda. We investigated links between temperament traits described in Strelau's Regulative Theory of Temperament (Emotional Reactivity, Briskness, Activity, Endurance, Perseveration and Sensory Sensitivity) and subjective well‐being (SWB)—Positive Affect, Negative Affect and Life Satisfaction as conceptualised by Diener. Participants representing early (n = 166) and late adolescence (n = 199), early (n = 195) and mid‐adulthood (n = 156) filled out Formal Characteristics of Behaviour—Temperament Inventory, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule and Satisfaction with Life Scale. Results showed that higher Briskness, Endurance, Activity, lower Perseveration and Emotional Reactivity corresponded with higher SWB. They predicted 16% of affective components' and 7% of satisfaction variance. Each well‐being component had a unique set of predictors; however, predictors of affective components varied across age groups. Higher Positive Affect was predicted by traits responsible for energetic regulation (higher Endurance and Activity and lower Emotional Reactivity) and by higher Perseveration, but their role (excluding Emotional Reactivity) was age‐dependent. Higher Negative Affect was predicted by higher Emotional Reactivity and dimensions expressing temporal characteristics, lower Briskness and higher Perseveration (Perseveration was not significant among younger adolescents). Higher Satisfaction was steadily predicted by lower Emotional Reactivity and higher Activity. Diabetes is considered a major public health problem affecting millions of individuals worldwide. Remarkably, scientific reports regarding salivary glands sphingolipid metabolism in diabetes are virtually non-existent. This is odd given the well-established link between the both in other tissues (e.g., skeletal muscles, liver) and the key role of these glands in oral health preservation. The aim of this paper is to examine sphingolipids metabolism in the salivary glands in (pre)diabetes (evoked by high fat diet feeding or streptozotocin). Wistar rats were allocated into three groups: control, HFD-, or STZ-diabetes. The content of major sphingolipid classes in the parotid (PSG) and submandibular (SMSG) glands was assessed via chromatography. Additionally, Western blot analyses were employed for the evaluation of key sphingolipid signaling pathway enzyme levels. No changes in ceramide content in the PSG were found, whereas an increase in ceramide concentration for SMSG of the STZ group was observed. This was accompanied by an elevation in SPT1 level. Probably also sphingomyelin hydrolysis was increased in the SMSG of the STZ-diabetic rats, since we observed a significant drop in the amount of SM. PSG and SMSG respond differently to (pre)diabetes, with clearer pattern presented by the later gland. An activation of sphingomyelin signaling pathway was observed in the course of STZ-diabetes, that is, metabolic condition with rapid onset/progression. Whereas, chronic HFD lead to an inhibition of sphingomyelin signaling pathway in the salivary glands (manifested in an inhibition of ceramide de novo synthesis and accumulation of S1P). Objective: There is no study evaluating the influence of morbid obesity and bariatric surgery on antioxidant/oxidant homeostasis of the unstimulated and stimulated human saliva.Materials and Methods: Salivary flow rate, total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative status index (OSI), the total amount of uric acid (UA), polyphenols (pPh), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2), specific activity of peroxidase (Px), as well as malondialdehyde (MDA), and advanced glycation end products (AGE) concentrations were determined in the unstimulated (UWS) and stimulated (SWS) whole saliva of patients with morbid obesity before and after bariatric surgery.Results: In both UWS and SWS, the total amount of TOS, OSI, SOD2, and MDA was statistically higher in patients with morbid obesity as compared to the healthy controls, as well as significantly lower in the patients treated surgically as compared to the obese patients. The median values of the total amount of TAS, CAT, UA, pPh, and specific activity of Px were significantly reduced in UWS and SWS in patients with morbid obesity as compared to the control group and also statistically elevated in patients after bariatric surgery as compared to the patients with morbid obesity.Conclusions: In morbid obesity, reduced unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow can be observed. Bariatric surgery restored only unstimulated salivary flow to normal values. Manuscript Type Conceptual Research Questions/Issues Executive remuneration, whether as a tool for resolving agency problems or as a sign of them, has been discussed in the literature for decades. The discussion, however, has been focused on non-financial firms, and bankers' remuneration, particularly in the context of corporate governance, has been overlooked until recently. However, following the financial crisis, regulators have begun intervening into banking boards' responsibilities, including remuneration. This raises numerous questions, in particular, how far the existing non-financial literature applies to banks, and if not, why and how this impacts on appropriate corporate governance in banking, and what challenges this brings? Research Findings/Insights The paper argues that due to numerous externalities, notably the interconnectivity and systemic risk of the banking sector, a traditional approach to remuneration based on resolving the principal-agent conflict is inappropriate. Active involvement of regulators is needed to balance the short-term performance of the banking sector with the long-term needs of society. This, however, means that remuneration and corporate governance of banks is no longer an individual bank issue but is a national and probably an international phenomenon. In some cases this may require fundamental changes to the national governance structure, culture, and practices. Theoretical/Academic Implications The analysis questions the suitability of the common idea of assessing corporate governance in banks in the same way as is done for non-financial institutions. Given that several traditional non-financial board responsibilities have been partially passed over to regulators in the banking sector, a new theoretical model of corporate governance is needed for banks. The paper examines relational contracts (echoed to some extent in stewardship, stakeholder, and network theories), and argues that these cannot be expected to be successful in the banking environment. Practitioner/Policy Implications The paper highlights the importance of tying the corporate governance of banks with other regulatory measures employed to restrict risk taking. Background However, there are some informations on the salivary glands involvement in systemic sclerosis, and there is a lack of any data about salivary glands function depending on systemic sclerosis subsets. Methods The unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow, the activity of peroxidase, the total amount of lactoferrin, lysozyme and s Ig A were determined in two subgroups of systemic sclerosis and healthy controls. Results In the unstimulated saliva of both patients groups, the salivary flow, the output of total protein and peroxidase activity were significantly lower; the total: s Ig A and lactoferrin were significantly higher as compared with the control. In the stimulated saliva of the patients with limited form, the total lysozyme and peroxidase activity were significantly higher than in the control. In the stimulated saliva of the patients with diffused form, the salivary flow was significantly lower and the total s Ig A and peroxidase activity were significantly higher than in the control. Conclusion Systemic sclerosis regardless of its subset affects salivary defense system of human unstimulated and stimulated saliva. Patients with the limited form experience the same impairment of the submandibular glands function as compared with patients with the diffused form. Only patients with the diffused form are deficient in respect of stimulated saliva secretion; the parotid glands of the patients with the limited form have a good secretory capacity in comparison with the healthy control. Background In spite of relatively large amount of evidence that oxidative stress is implicated in the pathogenesis of systemic sclerosis, there is no study analyzing antioxidants profile of the saliva of these patients. The aim of this study was to compare salivary antioxidants in subjects with systemic sclerosis and the healthy controls. Methods The unstimulated and stimulated salivary flow and the specific activity of peroxidase, superoxide dismutase 1, the total amount of uric acid, and total antioxidant status were determined in two subgroups of systemic sclerosis women and healthy controls. Results A significant increase in the specific activity of peroxidase, a significant decrease in the total amount of uric acid and total antioxidants status in unstimulated saliva as well as a significant increase in all antioxidants examined in stimulated saliva of group with normal salivary flow rate as compared to the healthy controls were observed. Our results showed a significant decrease in the specific activity of peroxidase in unstimulated and a significant decrease in all antioxidants examined in stimulated saliva of the group with hyposalivation as compared to the group with normal salivary flow rate. Conclusions Our results prove that impairment of the salivary glands in the course of systemic sclerosis may be attributed to free radicals, and it is correlated with disease duration. ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to develop a new capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) method for determination of enzymatic activity of hyaluronidase. The method permits monitoring of the process of hyaluronic acid digestion by hyaluronidase. Studies were performed using CZE instrument equipped with capillary of 64.5 cm total length, 56 cm effective length and internal diameter 75 µm. Separation was performed in the phosphate buffer (pH 8.10) in the electric field of 20 kV, λ = 220 nm. The procedure was based on mixing a known quantity of hyaluronic acid and an aliquot of hyaluronidase solution, followed by obtaining CZE profiles after a known period of incubation (0.5 h). The activity of hyaluronidase was calculated using multiple regression analysis in which sizes of the peaks of the main degradation products were used. The newly developed method was fully validated and it is appropriate to evaluate the activity of hyaluronidase originating from different sources with high precision and accuracy. t-Tests showed that there were no significant differences between results obtained using turbidimetric, viscosimetric and the new CZE method. The developed method is characterized by a short duration of analysis, low volume of analyzed sample, small amount of buffers used and low cost of analysis. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Background/purpose: Dendritic cells (DC) play a major role in the afferent immune response. They are found as a minor cell population in the blood as three main subtypes that can be distinguished phenotypically: plasmacytoid DC (PDC), and myeloid DC1 and 2 (MDC1 and 2). The aim of the study was to examine the effect of repeated whole-body suberythemal ultraviolet (UV) B irradiation on the percentages of DC subsets in the blood and skin, and to test for photoadaptation by the subsequent administration of a local erythemal UV dose. Methods: Thirty subjects in each group were irradiated with either 0.7 personal minimal erythema dose (MED) UVB daily for 10 days (whole body), or for the 10 days followed by a single three MED UVB exposure of a local body site, or with the single three MED UVB exposure of a local body site only. Blood was collected before and after the exposures and the percentage of DC and DC subtypes assessed by flow cytometry. Skin biopsies were collected at the same times, and the number and position of the DC subsets examined by immunofluorescent microscopy. Results: The whole-body repeated UVB irradiations did not result in a change in the blood DC (BDC) or the subsets percentages in the blood, except that there was a small but significant rise in the percentage of the MDC2 subset. No alteration occurred following the local erythemal UVB exposure. The total number of BDC in the skin was small, with the PDC being located mainly in the dermis and the myeloid subtypes mainly in the epidermis. No change in cutaneous numbers or distribution was revealed following the irradiation protocols. Conclusions: Repeated whole-body suberythemal UVB irradiation does not cause a change in BDC or BDC subsets in the blood or skin, except for a small increase in the percentage of MDC2 in the blood. This article focuses on the XXVth Congress of the Polish Dermatological Society held in Lódź, Poland on June 22-26, 1995. More than 1000 dermatologists from Poland and about 100 guests from abroad took part in this scientific event. Anastazy Omulecki, the head of the Dermatology Department of the Lódź Medical University, in cooperation with Andrzej Kaszuba, the head of the Dermatology Department of the Military Academy in Lódź, were the chief organizers of the Congress. John H. Epstein of San Francisco, discussed the role of UVA and UVB irradiation in the induction of skin cancer, Willem A. van Vloten of Utrecht, the Netherlands, presented a very modern classification of skin lymphomas and Robert A. Schwartz of New Jersey, the latest data on Kaposi sarcoma.
