Whether the Yangtze Block was involved in the global late Mesoproterozoic orogeny remains contentious. The Mesoproterozoic Huodiya Group exposed in the Hannan‐Micangshan Massif on the northwestern margin of the Yangtze Block could provide sufficient evidence to further clarify the regional tectonic affinity. However, quantitative insights into the depositional age, provenance and basin tectonic setting of the Huodiya Group still lack comprehensively constraining. This study presents a combined analysis of zircon U–Pb dating for meta‐sedimentary rocks of the Shangliang Formation of the upper Huodiya Group and intruded gabbroic dykes. Intergraded dating results constrain the late Mesoproterozoic maximum depositional age at ca. 1050 Ma. Ca. 900 Ma formation age for the intruded gabbroic dyke, plus the minimum formation age of the overlying Xixiang Group at ca. 950 Ma, further suggests its deposition should be prior to ca. 950–900 Ma. Concordant detrital zircon ages define pronounced age clusters of ca. 2229–1741 and 2950–2388 Ma and few age populations of ca. 3232–3082 and 1069–1033 Ma, consistent with the tectonothermal events in proximal domains at the northwestern and northern Yangtze Block. Detrital zircon age distribution patterns and cumulative curves, coupled with the stable carbonate platform and shallow‐marine facies sedimentation, suggest a passive continental margin setting for the Huodiya Group on the Yangtze Block margin at the late Mesoproterozoic. Comparative insights into the contemporaneous passive continental margin from north to southwest argue against the existence of a late Mesoproterozoic orogeny along the exterior periphery of the Yangtze Block. The ductile shear deformation of Precambrian basement rocks in Wuyishan provides a crucial perspective on intraplate orogeny in the South China Block (SCB). This study focuses on the Longquan‐Badu ductile shear zone in southeastern Zhejiang, employing field observations, thin section analysis, quartz electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), zircon U–Pb dating and 40Ar/39Ar geochronology. Two distinct phases of deformation, referred to as D1 and D2, have been identified. D1 is primarily characterized by a WNW–ESE striking foliation within a NE‐plunging lineation, indicating top‐to‐SSW shearing. The paragneiss within the Badu complex that experienced D1 deformation has been dated to 247–239 Ma through zircon U–Pb analysis, corresponding to the prevalent high‐pressure metamorphic age in the region. This correlation suggests that the D1 deformation event coincided with crustal thickening during the Early Triassic. D2 deformation exhibits folds, foliation, S‐C fabrics and mylonitic microstructures and is mainly characterized by striking NNE–SSW with steeply dip, demonstrating a dominant dextral strike–slip component. Quartz c‐axis orientations in mylonitic rocks indicate deformation temperatures between 350°C and 550°C with asymmetric girdle patterns suggesting simultaneous basal and prism slip. The plateau ages of muscovite from mylonitic rocks obtained through 40Ar/39Ar dating are approximately ~228 Ma implying that the D2 deformation occurred under retrograde amphibolite to greenschist facies metamorphic conditions during Middle Triassic. Collectively these data along with regional geological evidence signify two distinct intracontinental orogenic processes occurring in eastern SCB. Considering Early Mesozoic tectonothermal events in Cathaysia Block, it can be inferred that intraplate orogeny in Wuyishan resulted from plate‐margin collisions between SCB and peripheral plates following scissors closure of Palaeo‐Tethys from east to west. The Feidong Complex, located on the northeastern margin of the Yangtze Craton, exposes Precambrian basement rocks and is the subject of debate regarding its tectonic affinity. In this study, we conducted in situ U–Pb dating and Hf isotope analyses of zircons from basement rocks within the Feidong Complex. The results reveal crystallisation ages of ca. 2.45, 2.0 and 0.8 Ga for the granitic gneiss, amphibole biotite plagiogneiss and mylonitised monzonitic granite, respectively. The basement rocks with ages of ca. 2.45 and 2.0 Ga exhibit negative zircon εHf(t) values (−10.48 to −0.13) and older two‐stage model ages (TDM2 = 2974 to 3296 Ma). We compared the zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotopic characteristics of the basement rocks from the Feidong Complex with those of the southern margin of the North China Craton and the northern margin of the Yangtze Craton. Additionally, we also compared the metamorphic grades of rocks between the Feidong Complex and Susong Complex of the Dabie orogenic belt. We found that the Feidong Complex and the northern margin of Yangtze Craton share comparable zircon U–Pb ages and Hf isotopic characteristics. However, the metamorphic grades of the Feidong Complex were distinct from those of the Susong Complex. In particular, the basement rocks with an age of ca. 2.45 Ga formed within a subduction setting; those with an age of ca. 2.0 Ga formed during the subduction and collision associated with the assembly of the Columbia supercontinent; and those with an age of ca. 0.8 Ga experienced extensional processes before the breakup of the Rodinia supercontinent. Based on U‐Pb dating of zircon crystals and petrographic analysis, this study provides new insights into the paleogeographic and accretion evolution along SW Japan. Our data are consistent with an older submarine fan identified from drilling in the Shikoku Basin (Kyushu Fan ∼14.7–12.2 Ma), having a mixed sand provenance from the paleo‐Yangtze/Yellow rivers and the Shimanto Belt, and the younger Zenisu Fan (∼9.2–7.6 Ma), which is mainly sourced from the Shimanto Belt and the Izu‐Bonin/Honshu arc collision. Our results are in agreement with the hypothesis of very oblique subduction or strike‐slip motion between the northern Shikoku Basin and mainland Honshu from ∼12.2 to 9.2 Ma, after which essentially orthogonal subduction occurred after ∼8 Ma. The two main sandbodies drilled at IODP Site C0002 within the inner Nankai Accretionary Prism have similar petrographic signatures to those of the Zenisu and Kyushu submarine fans in the Shikoku Basin. The incorporation of the Shikoku Basin deposits most likely resulted from the seaward propagation of in‐sequence thrusts forming an outer accretionary wedge. The incorporation of the Kyushu Fan into the inner accretionary prism implies that the décollement was located in the hemipelagic interval beneath the Kyushu Fan at least until ∼2 Ma, whereas it is now located in the hemipelagic intervals below the Zenisu Fan. Such shifts in décollement location are most likely related to changes in physical properties of the hemipelagic interval due to significant compaction and diagenesis during subduction. Based on U/Pb dating of zircon and petrographic analyses, this study focuses on the provenance, transport and accretion of sediments along SW Japan where a large‐magnitude earthquake occurred. U/Pb dating of zircon from sand sampled in the Shikoku Basin and in the frontal Nankai accretionary prism indicates a significant sediment input from SE China and from the Shimanto Belt from ∼14.7 to ∼8 Ma. The youngest submarine fan of the Shikoku Basin was mainly sourced from the Shimanto Belt and the Izu‐Bonin/Honshu arc collision. The deformed submarine fans observed in the accretionary prism show similar petrographic signatures to sandbodies of the Shikoku Basin located on the incoming plate. This indicates that the Shikoku Basin deposits were incorporated by seaward propagation of thrusts, likely after resurgence of orthogonal subduction ∼8 Ma. To our knowledge, this is the first time that any study has correlated stratigraphy on a subducting oceanic plate to the internal stratigraphy of a linked accretionary prism. The Rochechouart impact structure in the northwestern part of the French Massif Central (FMC) has a great diversity of impactites, including monomict impact breccias, suevite, and impact melt rocks (IMRs). The structure is strongly eroded, which allows the study of impactites of the crater fill and the transition into the crater floor. The FMC has had a multistage geological evolution from the late Neoproterozoic to the Ordovician (600–450 Ma) until the later stages of the Variscan orogeny (~300 Ma). Previous geochronological work on Rochechouart has been focused mainly on the impactites and constraining the impact age, and scarce work has been done on the FMC‐related target rocks. Here, U‐Pb isotope analysis by LA‐MC‐ICP‐MS has been conducted on zircon from two IMRs from the Recoudert and Montoume localities, and from a monzodiorite, a paragneiss, and two amphibolite samples of the basement to the impact structure. Zircon from the target rocks yielded mainly Neoproterozoic to Carboniferous ages (~924 to ~301 Ma) that can mostly be correlated to different stages of the geological evolution of the FMC. The monzodiorite also yielded a Permian age of 272 ± 12 Ma. Zircon from the IMRs, and especially from the Montoume sample, gave a comparatively higher diversity of Neoproterozoic to Jurassic ages (~552 to ~195 Ma). Provenance analysis for the zircon age populations of the impactites compared to those of the basement rocks shows overall poor correlation between the two age groups. This suggests that other target lithologies were involved in the formation of these impact melts as well. Post‐Variscan and preimpact ages (281–226 Ma) obtained for both melt rocks probably reflect a previously unconstrained event in the evolution of the regional geological history. Ages similar to the currently most widely accepted impact age of ~204–206 Ma were obtained from both IMR samples. In addition, the Montoume melt rock yielded several post‐204 Ma ages, which might reflect a to date unconstrained, about 194 Ma postimpact thermal/hydrothermal event. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Continental alkaline magmatism has been suggested to play a significant role in releasing deep mantle carbon into the atmosphere, which can greatly impact the global climate. However, the temporal variations of alkaline magmatism and their potential to modulate climate over geologic time remain poorly constrained. The detrital zircon record is a frequently used proxy for tracking secular variations in particular magmatism. Here, we use a novel machine‐learning technique to discriminate zircon from carbonatites, kimberlites, and other alkaline rocks. A global compilation of detrital zircon yields continental alkaline magmatic flare‐ups between 1,050−850, 650−500, 250−200, and 50−0 Ma. Our estimates indicate relatively elevated contributions of total magmatic carbon outgassing from alkaline magmatism during the aforementioned magmatic flare‐ups. We infer that anomalous alkaline magmatism may influence global warming during specific intervals of geologic time, but when they are not that voluminous or persistent extensive arc magmatism may drive warming conditions. The Tongbai complex plays an important role in the understanding of the tectonic evolution of the Tongbai‐Dabie orogenic belt. By detailed structural analysis, new zircon U–Pb dating, zircon Lu–Hf analysis and whole‐rock elements for the rocks in the Tongbai complex and the wrapped shear zones, we suggested that the Tongbai complex was derived from the partial melting of the basement of Yangtze Block and experienced a uniform orogen‐parallel extension with a top‐to‐NW shearing at 142–133 Ma. The migmatites yield a migmatization age of 116 ± 2 Ma and are identical to the metamorphic age of 115–111 Ma from the L and LS tectonites in the Tongbai complex. The late Early Cretaceous migmatization may give rise to the severance of the uniform top‐to‐NW shear zone and lead to an antiform folding of the Tongbai complex. The similar deformation and migmatization of the complexes in both the Tongbai and Dabie orogenic belts suggest that the Tongbai‐Dabie orogenic belt is likely to have a similar tectonic transformation from orogen‐parallel to orogen‐perpendicular extension in the Early Cretaceous, namely a uniform orogen‐parallel extension of the ductile lithosphere during the early Early Cretaceous and a widespread migmatization during the late Early Cretaceous. The amalgamation of Laurentia was initiated along the western margin of the Rae craton. However, the tectonic setting that generated magmatic rocks along this margin has long been debated, with the Thelon tectonic zone in the north having formed in an arc setting, and the Taltson magmatic zone in the south variably attributed to either continental arc or intracratonic magmatism. The magmatic rocks of the Great Slave Lake shear zone (GSLsz) lie between these two tectonic belts and, thus, may be critical to the interpretation of the evolution of the western Rae margin. To understand the origin of the rocks in the GSLsz, we have applied U‐Pb geochronology, trace‐element geochemistry, and O and Hf isotope analyses to zircons from a suite of samples that transect the La Loche River fault (LRf)—a major structure that bisects the GSLsz. Samples collected to the north of the LRf are Neoarchean in age, have mantle‐like δ18O (4.7–5.8‰) and chondritic to juvenile εHf values (0–4.5), whereas those to the south are exclusively Paleoproterozoic in age and have more elevated δ18O (6.3–7‰) and much more evolved εHf values (−12 to −6); these results indicate that the LRf marks a crustal‐scale suture between the Slave craton and the Taltson magmatic zone. Our isotopic data, together with other regional constraints from the area, are most consistent with the Taltson magmatic zone having formed in a continental arc setting emplaced into ca. 2.3 Ga juvenile basement crust. While basaltic volcanism is dominant during rifting and continental breakup, felsic magmatism may be a significant component of some rift margins. During International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 396 on the continental margin of Norway, a graphite‐garnet‐cordierite bearing dacitic unit (the Mimir dacite) was recovered in two holes within early Eocene sediments on Mimir High (Site U1570), a marginal high on the Vøring Transform Margin. Here, we present a comprehensive textural, petrological, and geochemical study of the Mimir dacite in order to assess its origin and discuss the geodynamic implications. The major mineral phases (garnet, cordierite, quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar) are hosted in a fresh rhyolitic, vesicular, glassy matrix that is locally mingled with sediments. The major element chemistry of garnet and cordierite, the presence of zircon inclusions with inherited cores, and thermobarometric calculations all support an upper crustal metapelitic origin. While most magma‐rich margin models favor crustal anatexis in the lower crust, thermobarometric calculations performed here show that the Mimir dacite was produced at upper‐crustal depths (<5 kbar, 18 km depth) and high temperature (750–800°C) with up to 3 wt% water content. In situ U‐Pb analyses on zircon inclusions give a magmatic crystallization age of 54.6 ± 1.1 Ma, consistent with emplacement that post‐dates the Paleocene‐Eocene Thermal Maximum. Our results suggest that the opening of the Northeast Atlantic was associated with a phase of low‐pressure, high‐temperature crustal anatexis preceding the main phase of magmatism. This included the rifting and formation of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean, known in particular for producing considerable magmatism during continental break‐up. In summer 2021, Expedition 396 of the International Ocean Discovery Program drilled the oceanic floor off the coast of present‐day Norway to collect volcanic and sedimentary rocks deposited at this time. Their main goal was to investigate the cause of the excess magmatism and its potential implications for the global climate. While sampling sediments on the expedition, an unexpected volcanic unit, a glassy garnet‐cordierite dacite, was recovered. To determine its origin, we combined multiple methods (petrography, stratigraphy, thermodynamic calculations, petrochronology, in situ compositional analyses) and showed that the unit is a product of melting of in the continental crust at shallow depth during the rifting process and likely later emplaced in shallow water. Our results demonstrate that the rifting process in the Northeast Atlantic included a long and intense period of continental crustal thinning. This research provides evidence needed to reconstruct the evolution of the Northeast Atlantic Ocean. The Hesar pluton in the northern Urumieh–Dokhtar magmatic arc hosts numerous mafic‐microgranular enclaves (MMEs). Whole rock geochemistry, mineral chemistry, zircon U‐Pb and Sr‐Nd isotopes were measured. It is suggested that the rocks are metaluminous (A/CNK = 1.32–1.45), subduction‐related I‐type calc‐alkaline gabbro to diorite with similar mineral assemblages and geochemical signatures. The host rocks yielded an U‐Pb crystallization age of 37.3 ± 0.4 Ma for gabbro‐diorite. MMEs have relatively low SiO2 contents (52.9–56.6 wt%) and high Mg# (49.8–58.7), probably reflecting a mantle‐derived origin. Chondrite‐ and mantle‐normalized trace element patterns are characterized by LREE and LILE enrichment, HREE and HFSE depletion with slight negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu* = 0.86–1.03). The host rocks yield (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios of 0.70492–0.70510, positive εNd(t) values of +1.55–+2.06 and TDM2 of 707–736 Ma, which is consistent with the associated mafic microgranular enclaves ((87Sr/86Sr)i = 0.705014, εNd(t) = +1.75, TDM2 = 729 Ma). All data suggest magma‐mixing for enclave and host rock formation, showing a complete equilibration between mixed‐mafic and felsic magmas, followed by rapid diffusion. The TDM1(Nd) and TDM2(Nd) model ages and U‐Pb dating indicate that the host pluton was produced by partial melting of the lower continental crust and subsequent mixing with injected lithospheric mantle‐derived magmas in a pre‐collisional setting of Arabian–Eurasian plates. The northeastern periphery of the Qaidam Basin is a crucial region for comprehending the northeastward growth of the Tibetan Plateau, as it documents Late Cenozoic crustal deformation that elucidates the plateau's growth process. In this study, we reconstruct three stages of crustal deformation in the northeastern periphery of the Qaidam Basin during the Late Cenozoic based on interpretation of growth strata from five seismic profiles, structural mapping of the typical superimposed folds and detailed detrital zircon analysis within the study area. (1) During the Early Miocene to Late Miocene period (23–8.6 Ma), there was NW–SE extensional deformation in the northeast margin of the Qaidam Basin, which exerted control over the deposition of the Youshashan Formation. (2) The NW–SE shortening occurred during the Late Miocene period (8.6–8.1 Ma), subsequent to the deposition of the Youshashan Formation and preceding the deposition of the Shizigou Formation, resulting in a parallel unconformity between these two geological units. (3) The intense shortening of the NE–SW direction occurred during the Late Miocene and Pliocene epochs (8.1–2.5 Ma). The timing of this deformation aligns with the sedimentary age of the Shizigou Formation, suggesting that the initial deformation age may represent the onset of NE extrusion from the Tibetan Plateau towards the northeast margin of the Qaidam Basin. The present study not only delineates a Late Cenozoic structural dome resulting from two‐stage crustal shortening in the northeastern periphery of the Tibetan Plateau, but also provides a crucial evidence for reconstructing the Late Cenozoic intracontinental deformation process in this region. Distinguishing between shallow‐water delta and fluvial fan deposits in the subsurface of lacustrine basins is challenging due to their similar depositional characteristics and distribution patterns. This study focuses on the Middle Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in the central Sichuan Basin using core observations, seismic analyses, petrology analyses, zircon analyses, palaeoclimate indicators and palaeocurrent analyses to address this issue. Fifteen sedimentary lithofacies and eight lithofacies associations were established, corresponding to channelized fluvial deposits, non‐channelized fluvial deposits and shallow‐water delta deposits. Shallow‐water deltas are dominated by channels and mouth‐bar complexes with grey, red and green interbedded mudstone. Shingled seismic reflection, green mud clasts, small burrows and wave ripples are common with occasional palaeosols. Fluvial fans are dominated by channels and crevasse‐splays with pink colour and accompanied by red coloured floodplain deposits. Bright spot seismic reflection, red mud clasts, big burrows, current ripples and palaeosols are common. The increased uplift of the Dabashan Mountains controls the palaeocurrent direction, promoting the evolution from a shallow‐water delta in relatively humid environments to a fluvial fan in relatively arid environments. The channel widths in shallow‐water deltas are wider than those in fluvial fans, whereas the opposite applies for the channel amalgamation rate. Highly frequent channel‐width variations are controlled by short‐cycle climate fluctuation, corresponding to chemical index of alteration value fluctuations in different sandstone groups. The channel width in the relatively humid environments is wider than that in arid environments for both shallow‐water deltas and fluvial fans. It is likely that the sedimentary evolution from shallow‐water deltas to fluvial fans is relatively common in lacustrine basins in relatively arid environments with wide and gentle slope landforms. Competing hypotheses attribute the regional loss of 1.2–1.0 Ga detrital zircon from the Cambrian Sauk Sequence in southwestern North America to differing tectonic controls on surface topography. We test three hypotheses with source‐to‐sink detrital zircon provenance analysis via tandem in situ and isotope dilution U–Pb geochronology paired with geochemical and Hf‐isotope tracers. Our data indicate that the lower‐to‐middle Sixtymile Formation in Grand Canyon was derived from ca. 1.1 Ga rocks of the Llano Uplift and the ca. 539–523 Ma Wichita igneous province, approximately 1400 km away. In contrast, new U–Pb geochronology links the upper Sixtymile and Tapeats formations to the 513–510 Ma Florida Mountains intrusive complex, southern New Mexico, and proximal 1.4 and 1.7 Ga basement approximately 650 km away. We attribute a regional provenance shift to plume–lithosphere interactions on the Iapetan margin, tectonism along 'leaky' intracratonic transverse fault zones and the rift‐to‐drift transition on the Cordilleran margin. The North Qinling Orogenic Belt (NQB) records the pivotal geological information for understanding the Palaeozoic evolution of the Qinling Orogenic Belt (QOB). Previous studies mainly focused on the subduction–collision process along the Shangdan suture zone before the Early Devonian. However, as the significant interim period between the Early Palaeozoic and Mesozoic orogeny, the Late Palaeozoic tectonic evolution of the NQB remains poorly understood. Fortunately, the Carboniferous magmatic rocks discovered this time provide substantial geological evidence for revealing the Late Palaeozoic tectonic history of the Qinling Orogenic Belt. This paper will provide a detailed analysis of zircon U–Pb ages, geochemical characteristics and Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopic compositions of Carboniferous rocks. The Carboniferous magmatic rocks are categorized as highly differentiated S‐type granite and monzodiorite, formed at 350 ± 2.4 Ma and 353 ± 5.2 Ma, respectively. The granite shows weak peraluminous (A/CNK = 1.02–1.11) and shoshonite nature. Based on the isotopic composition and trace element characteristics, we propose that the Qinling Group paragneiss is the primary source of the Carboniferous granite. Monzodiorite is characterized by enriched LREEs and LILEs (Ba, K and Pb), depleted HFSEs (Th, Nb, Ta and Ti) and enriched Sr‐Nd isotopic composition. Monzodiorite magma source region consists of continental crustal material and lithospheric metasomatized mantle. Carboniferous magmatic rocks are the product of an extensional tectonic setting, which indicates the NQB tectonic regimes transition from compression to extension during the Carboniferous. Provenance tools, particularly detrital zircon U–Pb analysis, have been widely employed to test drainage network evolution in southeast Tibet and its linkage with the growth of the Tibetan Plateau. Numerous provenance studies have been conducted on the sediments in the paleo‐Yangtze and paleo‐Red River drainage basins. Nevertheless, it is still hotly debated as to whether a "Mississippi" (dendritic) pattern Greater paleo‐Red River, originating from southeast Tibet and draining to the South China Sea, existed in the early Cenozoic, and was subsequently captured by the paleo‐lower Yangtze due to uplift of southeastern Tibet. In this study, in addition to presenting new data from the Gonjo and Jianchuan basins along which the Greater paleo‐Red River is proposed to have flowed, we compiled all the published detrital zircon U–Pb data from the paleo‐upper Yangtze and paleo‐Red River drainage basins from Triassic and younger rocks. Our large database of detrital zircon U–Pb analyses shows that the different terranes in the paleo‐upper Yangtze and paleo‐Red River drainage basins have similar zircon U–Pb signatures since the Late Triassic closure of the Paleo‐Tethys Ocean. Therefore, most of the sediments in the Cenozoic sedimentary basins in southeast Tibet could have been either deposited by long‐distance transport in large rivers from southeast Tibet or recycled from local bedrock. Given the potential importance of sedimentary recycling that we have demonstrated, this poses challenges to the use of detrital zircon U–Pb analyses to determine paleodrainage in this region. We therefore further explored the previously relatively limited use of Sr–Nd isotopes on mudstones and detrital mica 40Ar/39Ar ages, with new analyses from the Gonjo and Jianchuan Basins, to determine if these techniques were better suited to reconstruct paleodrainage evolution. Whilst these techniques do show some promise, more analyses and strategic sampling are required to obtain a full understanding of the extent of their potential utility. Overall, our integrated provenance study indicates that the available data are not sufficiently conclusive to support or refute the Greater paleo‐Red River capture model. Plain Language Summary: In the southeast margin of the Tibetan Plateau, five large‐scale rivers (Yangtze, Mekong, Salween, Irrawaddy, and Yarlung‐Brahmaputra) flow through central Tibet to southeast Asia. How these rivers evolved during the Cenozoic uplift of the Tibetan Plateau remains a controversial issue. It has been hypothesized that, in the early Cenozoic, all the upper reaches of the five rivers flowed to the south and connected to the Red River flowing to the South China Sea, forming a "Mississippi" pattern Greater paleo‐Red River; this Greater paleo‐Red River was later captured by the lower Yangtze due to uplift of the Tibetan Plateau. Here we test the Greater paleo‐Red River model by adding new data from Cenozoic sedimentary basins and providing a comprehensive compilation of available detrital zircon U‐Pb data from different terranes of southeast Tibet. With this large data set, we found that the source signatures for the various terranes from southeast Tibet are indistinguishable due to zircon recycling. Moreover, we explored the use of Sr–Nd isotopes and detrital mica 40Ar/39Ar ages as potential alternative provenance tools to test the river capture model. The overall provenance data are insufficient to test the validity of the Greater paleo‐Red River capture model. Detrital geochronology employing the widely‐used zircon U‐Pb proxy is biased toward igneous events and metamorphic anatexis; additionally, zircon is highly refractory and frequently polycyclic. Garnet, a rock‐forming and thus commonly occurring mineral, is predominantly metamorphic and much less refractory. Here, we report in situ U‐Pb and Lu‐Hf ages from detrital garnet hosted in ancient and modern sediments of the European Alps. Both geochronometers are biased toward the most recent garnet‐crystallizing metamorphic event in the source area, with fewer inherited ages. This likely reflects efficient removal of inherited garnet during diagenesis and metamorphism, and is in contrast to detrital zircon, apatite, and rutile U‐Pb data, which largely record pre‐Alpine ages. Neither the U‐Pb nor Lu‐Hf system in garnet exhibits a relationship between age recovery and composition. However, the Lu‐Hf system in garnet yields significantly better age recovery than the U‐Pb system. Estimated initial 238U/206Pbc values at the time of crystallization are near unity, suggesting that garnet does not significantly partition U from Pb during crystallization, at least for the generally almandine‐rich garnets analyzed in this study. Hence, Lu‐Hf geochronology of detrital garnet offers an effective method to detect and date the most recent phase of mid‐grade metamorphism in sub‐anatectic source areas, in which detrital zircon U‐Pb analysis may be of less utility. Plain Language Summary: Mountain ranges are characterized by rapid changes in their constituent rocks as these undergo metamorphism to adjust to increasing pressure and temperature during tectonic burial. These metamorphic processes drive mineral crystallization. Once cooled, each mineral acts as a geochemical reservoir isolated from the surrounding environment. Therefore, if a mineral has incorporated a radioactive isotope during crystallization, it can be dated to constrain the timings and rates of metamorphism. As erosion ultimately converts crystalline bedrock to sediment, the geological histories of these processes are preserved in the sediment shed during erosion. Consequently, these histories can be read from sedimentary rocks in adjacent sedimentary basins. Minerals traditionally used to study the sources of these sediments, such as zircons, largely grow from molten rock rather than during metamorphism, and are tough enough to be recycled through multiple tectonic events. The mineral garnet more commonly grows under metamorphic conditions and is thus more effective at directly recording the most recent phases of significant mountain building. Here, we present uranium‐lead and lutetium‐hafnium ages of garnet in modern and ancient sediment from the Alps. We show that garnet preferentially records Alpine events and is thus suitable for provenance studies targeting the most recent mountain building event. The Jiamusi Block is a crucial geological unit joining multiple tectonic regimes, including the Late Palaeozoic Palaeo‐Asian Ocean and the superposition of the Early Mesozoic Palaeo‐Pacific tectonic domain. However, the duration of the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate subduction beneath the Jiamusi Block has long been controversial. In this paper, we focus on clastic rocks from the Nanshuangyashan and Yunshan formations on the east margin of the Jiamusi Block and use the modal analysis of sandstones and detrital zircon U–Pb dating to trace the subduction history of the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate. Our analysis results suggest that the two groups of samples are characterized by a high content of monocrystalline quartz and a low content of lithic and feldspar, indicating that the sedimentary provenances were stable continental blocks and magmatic arcs. The detrital zircon ages of the Nanshuangyashan Formation have a major peak at ca. 245 Ma and two secondary peaks at ca. 470 and 228 Ma, respectively. The Yunshan Formation has a major peak at ca. 494 Ma and a secondary peak at ca. 265 Ma. The provenances of the Nanshuangyashan Formation were attributed to the Jiamusi Block, Khanka Block, and a Late Triassic magmatic arc. Similarly, the provenances of the Yunshan Formation were attributed to the Jiamusi and Khanka blocks. Detrital zircon analysis results show that the eastern margin of the Jiamusi Block was in the same back‐arc basin settings in the Late Triassic and the Late Jurassic. Thus, we propose that the eastern margin of the Jiamusi Block had been affected by the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate subduction in the Late Triassic and had continued to the Late Jurassic. The duration and extent of sediment routing systems are intrinsically linked to crustal‐ to mantle‐scale processes. Therefore, distinct changes in the geodynamic regime may be captured in the detrital record. This study attempts to reconstruct the sediment routing system of the Canning Basin (Western Australia) during the Early Cretaceous to decipher its depositional response to Mesozoic‐Cenozoic supercontinent dispersal. Specifically, we reconstruct source‐to‐sink relationships for the Broome Sandstone (Dampier Peninsula) and proximal modern sediments through multi‐proxy analysis of detrital zircon (U–Pb, Lu–Hf and trace elements) and detrital rutile (U–Pb and trace elements). Multi‐proxy comparison of detrital signatures and potential sources reveals that the majority of the detrital zircon and rutile grains are ultimately sourced from crystalline basement in central Australia (Musgrave Province and Arunta region) and that proximal sediment supply (i.e., Kimberley region) is negligible. However, a significant proportion of detritus might be derived from intermediate sedimentary sources in central Australia (e.g., Amadeus Basin) rather than directly from erosion of crystalline basement. Broome Sandstone data are consistent with a large‐scale drainage system with headwaters in central Australia. Contextualization with other broadly coeval drainage systems suggests that central Australia acted as a major drainage divide during the Early Cretaceous. Importantly, reorganization after supercontinent dispersal is characterized by the continuation of a sediment pathway remnant of an earlier transcontinental routing system originating in Antarctica that provided a template for Early Cretaceous drainage. Review of older Canning Basin strata implies a prolonged denudation history of central Australian lithologies. These observations are consistent with the long‐lived intracontinental tectonic activity of central Australia governing punctuated sediment generation and dispersion more broadly across Australia and emphasize the impact of deep Earth processes on sediment routing systems. Over 10,000 published detrital zircon ages have been reprocessed (applying a +10% normal and reverse concordance range) and analysed to understand the evolution of the detrital zircon record of north‐west Africa during the Phanerozoic. Using dissimilarity and clustering analysis, shifts in detrital zircon populations allow interpretation of the evolution of source regions and source to sink systems throughout the Phanerozoic within the West Gondwana superfan. Previous thermochronology and field studies conducted across north‐west Africa indicate significant and sustained shifts in source regions in Meso‐Cenozoic times which are not recorded in the detrital zircon geochronology record. This discrepancy is most notable for Mesozoic to modern source to sink studies focused on the evolution of the Atlasic rift and opening of the Atlantic and Tethyan Oceans to the west and north respectively. Our results indicate a high degree of similarity between samples from Cambrian times onwards due to successive phases of sediment recycling. This highlights the need to integrate detrital zircon analysis with other techniques to provide confident reconstruction of sediment routing systems across Morocco. This systematic review also reveals the ubiquitous occurrence of Mesoproterozoic zircons within Moroccan sediment. No basement of this age is known from north‐west Africa—often described as the 'Mesoproterozoic Gap', which was thought to be a diagnostic feature of sediment derived from the West African Craton. However, zircons of this age form 7% of all analysed zircons and are present in sediments from at least 700 Ma. The presence of this population is interpreted as strongly diagnostic of provenance from either the Amazonian Craton or the Eastern Gondwana Orogen within Central Africa. Their presence in the Moroccan detrital record from the Neoproterozoic onwards raises questions about the position of the West African Craton in the Proterozoic, and for the spatial extent of Mesoproterozoic orogeny within north Africa. Reconstructing the tectonic architecture of the southern Altaids is of great importance to piece together the continental growth history of the Central Asian continent. In this paper, we address the subduction‐accretion process of the Paleo‐Tianshan Ocean, one branch of the South Tianshan Ocean, in the southern Altaids, through a detailed geological and geochemical investigation of the Wulanmoren Accretionary Complex (WAC). The WAC is composed of ophiolitic mélanges, ocean plate stratigraphy mélanges, and turbiditic coherent units. In this study, we present key geological, petrological, and geochemical evidence indicating back‐arc and ocean island affinity of the igneous rocks of the WAC. Zircon U‐Pb dates of these rocks ages range between 380.2 ± 1.3 and 302.0 ± 5.3 Ma. The sedimentary matrix units of the mélanges were deposited in the Early Devonian (∼405 Ma) to the Late Triassic (∼222 Ma), rather than Silurian strata as previously thought. However, the ages of some detrital zircons in the sedimentary matrix are Precambrian, pointing to a complex evolution involving multiple ocean island terrains and island arcs of different ages that accreted from the mid‐Paleozoic to the Early Mesozoic. Plain Language Summary: Well‐exposed rock outcrops of the Wulanmoren Accretionary Complex (WAC) offer an ideal opportunity to solve the enigma of the evolutionary history of the Paleo‐Tianshan Ocean (PTO) of Central Asia. We report field observations, geochemistry, and geochronology of the WAC in the southern Altaids, pointing to multiple tectonic settings of ages spanning from the Early Devonian (∼405 Ma) to the Late Triassic (∼222 Ma). The northeastern Siberian craton stores numerous placers of diamonds that differ in morphology and texture, and originate from different types of primary deposits, primarily kimberlites. Analyses of mantle zircons selected from samples of alluvial and coarse clastic sediments in the watersheds of the Olenek and Kyutyungde rivers in the Anabar‐Olenek subprovince of the Yakutian diamond province provide constraints on kimberlite magmatism events in the area. The new U–Pb ages and typical kimberlitic signatures of the Kyutyungde zircons trace‐element patterns reveal three main magmatic events that produced kimberlites: Middle Paleozoic (Late Devonian to Early Carboniferous), Jurassic and Triassic. The Jurassic zircons (177–149 Ma) are mainly related to kimberlites in the proximal Kuoika‐Molodo and Khorbusuon fields. Triassic zircons (240–221 Ma) were probably released during large‐scale erosion of the eastern Anabar shield, however, the presence of such zircons in the Kyutyungde area indicates that kimberlites of the respective magmatic stage may exist within the immediate vicinity of the area. The only Middle Paleozoic zircon sample (358.6 Ma, D3‐C1 boundary) may originate from a proximal kimberlite within the Kyutyungde area. The presence of Middle Paleozoic kimberlitic zircons, along with harzburgite–dunitic pyropes, indicates that the primary deposit of diamonds and related minerals may exist near or within the Kyutyungde area. Late Ediacaran–Early Cambrian (573–473 Ma) mantle zircons found in Early Cambrian conglomerates of the area, along with other mantle minerals including Cr spinel of a diamond assemblage, record another Precambrian event of potentially diamondiferous magmatism in the Kyutyungde basin. The Cenozoic development of the Scotia Sea and opening of Drake Passage evolved in a complex tectonic setting with sea‐floor spreading accompanied by the dispersal of continental fragments and the creation of rifted oceanic basins. The post‐Eocene tectonic setting of the Scotia Sea is relatively well established, but Late Mesozoic palaeo‐locations of many continental fragments prior to dispersal are largely unknown, with almost no geological control on the submerged banks. Detrital zircon analysis of dredged metasedimentary rocks of Bruce Bank from the South Scotia Ridge demonstrates a geological continuity with the South Orkney microcontinent (SOM) and also a clear geological affinity with the Trinity Peninsula Group metasedimentary rocks of the Antarctic Peninsula and components of the Cordillera Darwin Metamorphic Complex of Tierra del Fuego. Kinematic modelling indicates an Antarctic Plate origin for Bruce Bank and the SOM is the most plausible setting, prior to translation to the Scotia Plate during Scotia Sea opening. The Cenozoic geological hallmark of Western Yunnan is the characteristic voluminous Late Cretaceous‐Eocene granites; however, their geological background and petrogenesis have not been well constrained and elucidated. In this study, we present new zircon U‐Pb dating, along with geochemical and Sr‐Nd‐Hf isotopic data for granites from the Tengchong–Lianghe granitoid belt (as abbreviated to Tengliang belt) and West Yingjiang batholiths from the Tengchong block. The mineralogical and geochemical features of the Tengliang granites and the West Yingjiang batholiths are ascribed to aluminous S‐type granites and weak peraluminous I‐type, respectively. Zircon U‐Pb analyses yielded consistent ages ranging from 67.5 Ma, 68.4 Ma and 66.2 Ma from the Tengliang granitoid belt and 50.4 Ma to 60.8 Ma for three samples from the west Yingjiang batholiths. The Tengliang granites were emplaced during the Late Cretaceous (68–66 Ma) and demonstrate negative εHf(t) values (–24 to –4) and initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7101–0.7139 and significant negative εNd(t) values from –8.91 to –13.2, indicating a Proterozoic sedimentary source or enriched components. The hornblende‐bearing I‐type granites from West Yingjiang are characterized by lower initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios of 0.7076–0.7106, compared to Tengliang granite and negative whole‐rock εNd(t) values from –4.0 to –11.9. The early Eocene west Yingjiang gneissic granites show wide ranges of εHf(t) values from +7.4 to –8.5 and T2DM of 1.30–0.65 Ga, indicating partial melting of ancient crust with contributions of depleted mantle materials. In combination with the regional background and previous studies, we propose that such a spatio‐temporal distribution of the Tengchong granitoid belt might be related to the rollback or angle‐switching of the Neo‐Tethyan subducting slab. Full‐plate reconstructions describe the history of past continental motions and how plate boundaries have evolved to accommodate these motions. Traditionally, tectonic reconstructions relied on geophysical data from the oceans and paleomagnetism as the primary quantitative constraints. However, these data do not directly constrain the paths of subduction zones or other plate boundaries, so reconstructing the complete configurations of tectonic plates in the past must rely on alternative methods. Here, we investigate the applicability of detrital zircon age spectra to characterize tectonic settings in deep time using a much larger data set than previously considered. We analyzed the proximity between reconstructed plate boundaries and sample sites assigned to different tectonic categorizations based on the proportion of zircon ages close to the depositional age and found that the categorization has an ∼70% success rate in distinguishing convergent settings. Results are not strongly influenced by factors such as the number of zircon grains available within each detrital sample or uncertainty in the depositional age of the sample. The ability of the categorization to define extensional settings, such as rift basins, is less clear. Nonetheless, the broader pattern of results at the scale of Pangea shows that categorized zircon samples form a coherent pattern, where samples with dominantly young zircons lie at the supercontinent periphery while samples in the core of Pangea are dominated by grains much older than the age of deposition. This result suggests that zircon data could help to quantify uncertainties in full‐plate reconstructions and discriminate between competing models for Proterozoic supercontinents. Identifying where plates moved together or apart is a fundamental part of reconstructing Earth history. One novel approach is by analyzing the ages of individual crystals of zircon, a mineral found in many rocks. Previous studies put forward the idea that, in rocks where most zircons are not much older than the rock itself, these rocks likely formed close to the area where volcanos were active. Conversely, rocks formed far from active volcanos would lack these young zircons. We tested this idea using a much bigger data set of rock samples than previously considered. We found that the analysis of zircon ages can fingerprint volcanic activity with a reasonable success rate. Around 300 million years ago, most landmasses on Earth came together to form a supercontinent called Pangea. When viewed at the scale of Pangea, our results show that rocks divided into different groups using their zircon characteristics form coherent patterns distinguishing the periphery of Pangea from the core of it. The same method may help us to study other supercontinents that existed billions of years before Pangea. The Geo‐chronology of the Mesozoic sequences from the northern Ordos Basin provides an excellent window for understanding the source‐to‐sink analysis and tectonic settings. In this study, nine groups of detrital zircon U–Pb ages from the Middle Triassic to Lower Cretaceous strata of the northern Ordos Basin are presented. Three dominant age groups are revealed through the kernal density estimation: ca. 2,300 ~ 2,500 Ma (Siderian), ca. 2,050 ~ 1,800 Ma (Orosirian), and ca. 358.9 ~ 298.9 Ma (Carboniferous). Significant differences are distinguished according to multidimensional scaling analysis and cumulative distribution function. The Middle Triassic sample is the closest to the Yin Mts and the upper Triassic and lower Jurassic samples have significant similarities with the Jining area. The samples YA‐1 and ZL‐1 from the Middle Jurassic sequences are the closest to the Daqing Mts (DQS) and Wula Mts (WLS), respectively. The sample ZL‐1 is the second closest to the DQS. The sample YJ‐1 from the Lower Cretaceous sequences has apparent affinities with multiple resources, including the DQS, WLS and samples EM‐1 and AD‐1, while the sample LH‐1 only resembles the sample YA‐1. Overall, the northern Ordos Basin experienced three stages of transformations in the source areas: (a) Southward migration during the Middle Triassic and the Early Jurassic; (b) Westward migration during the Early Jurassic and latest Middle Jurassic; (c) Southward migration during the latest Middle Jurassic, and multiple resources and recycled sediments for the Cretaceous sequences. The transition to the North China Craton's (NCC) extensional tectonic setting was closely related to the transformation from the Palaeo‐Asian Ocean's closure to the Palaeo‐Pacific Plate's subduction during the Early Jurassic. The Kalatag area contains many intrusive rocks of Late Ordovician to Permian age and hosts polymetallic deposits that are associated with magmatism. It is a key area for revealing the nature and genesis of the Palaeozoic rocks in East Tianshan. The intrusive rocks of different periods preserve useful information regarding the tectonomagmatic history of the Kalatag area. Zircon U–Pb geochronological, Hf isotopic, Sr–Nd isotopic, and whole‐rock geochemical analyses are reported for the intrusions from the Meiling ore district, Yudai ore district, and Kalatag pluton to reveal their petrogenesis and geodynamic setting. The LA–ICP–MS zircon U–Pb analyses suggest that the quartz diorite from the Kalatag pluton formed at 420–432 Ma, and the quartz diorite porphyry from the Yudai ore district formed at 436–439 Ma. The zircons from the quartz diorite and quartz diorite porphyry mainly yield high εHf(t) values (12.2–16.2) and very young Hf model ages (TDM = 0.41–0.56 Ga; TDMC = 0.49–0.56 Ga), which are consistent with a depleted mantle origin. The geochemical characteristics of the granites and quartz diorites from the Kalatag pluton and diorite porphyry from the Meiling ore district exhibit typical subduction‐related features such as enrichment in LILEs and LREEs and depletion in HFSEs. These diorites have moderate Mg# (30–47), positive εNd(t) values (4.2–5.6), and young Nd model ages (0.62–0.83 Ga), which are consistent with a depleted mantle origin that is accompanied by limited crustal assimilation. Based on the regional geology and geochemical evidence and previous studies, the Ordovician–Carboniferous rocks from the Kalatag area are considered to have formed in an island‐arc setting and were probably formed by a subduction event. The Cathaysian Coastal Mountains are thought to be an ancient high‐topographic feature that existed along the margin of South China. They are characterised by extensive Jurassic–Cretaceous magmatism; however, their formation mechanism and timing remains uncertain. In this paper, we present sedimentological and detrital zircon analyses from Cretaceous–Eocene strata and drainage sediments from Hainan Island. Our analyses show a change in provenance from a proximal Cathaysian Coastal arc source in Cretaceous strata to a widely distributed intra‐island granite source in the Eocene strata and modern river sediments. Reconstruction of the crustal thickness evolution for the South China margin from Eu/Eu*‐in‐zircon proxy shows significant crustal thickening during the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous, thereby suggesting the existence of the Cathaysian Coastal Mountains. Together with a compilation of detrital zircon U‐Pb ages in the northern basins of the South China Sea margin, we conclude that the Cathaysian Coastal Mountains extended from the Red River region to Taiwan along the South China margin during the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous and then collapsed/eroded from northeast to southwest during the Eocene–Miocene. This large mountain range supplied detrital sediments to the marginal basins in the northern South China Sea and formed a topographic barrier that prohibited moist Pacific air to reach the relatively arid inland area of South China during the Late Jurassic–Cretaceous. The Lohit Plutonic Complex (LPC) represents Trans‐Himalayan magmatic rocks in the easternmost sector of the Himalayan Orogen. It is divided into leucogranite‐granodiorite‐diorite dominant suite in the NE and the gabbro‐diorite‐granodiorite‐granite–trondhjemite suite in the SE by the Walong Thrust. U–Pb geochronological analyses of euhedral zircon grains from different magmatic phases of LPC reveal episodic magmatism. Zircon U–Pb age of 153.4 ± 1.4 Ma of a garnetiferous granite gneiss suggest that the crustal sourced magmatism was active in Arunachal Trans‐Himalaya during the late Jurassic. U–Pb ages of subduction induced magmatic rocks of LPC range between 117 ± 0.6 Ma and 49.5 ± 0.3 Ma. A significant contribution in crustal recycling during the Oligocene–Miocene is evident from crustally derived leucogranites having U–Pb ages ranging from 35.6 ± 0.3 Ma to 30 ± 0.3 Ma. A comparison of the crystallization ages of the Western Trans‐Himalayan units with those of eastern Trans‐Himalayan units reveals an earlier onset of Tethyan arc magmatism in the eastern sector. We present structural analysis and zircon and monazite geochronology of the Greater Himalayan Sequence (GHS) in the Kali Gandaki valley, central Nepal. Although the foliation is moderately NE‐dipping, the upper GHS shows a top‐to‐WNW shear sense, whereas the lower GHS developed top‐to‐SW ductile shear zones. Quartz fabrics from mylonitic gneisses indicate deformation temperature from >650°C to ~450°C. Monazite from the GHS recorded anatexis at "near peak" conditions from ~43 to 28 Ma and exhumation near the sillimanite‐kyanite transition at 25–21 Ma. Ages of zircon rims constrain the onset of exhumation. From the upper GHS to the Main Central Thrust zone, pervasive deformation and anticlockwise rotation of the lineation from the orogen‐parallel to orogen‐perpendicular direction suggest exhumation of the GHS by general shear from ~31 to 21 Ma. The Early Pennsylvanian land plant community is characterized by widespread forests consisting of lycopsids, ferns, and seeds fern in swampy wetlands. The contemporaneous palynological assemblages are mainly composed of spores of Lycospora spp., Densosporites spp., and Laevigatosporites spp. and monosaccate prepollen of Florinites spp. Taeniate bisaccate pollen appeared for the first time during the Early Pennsylvanian but never prevailed in the coeval palynological assemblages. Here, we report a taeniate bisaccate pollen‐dominated palynological assemblage from the Jiamuhe Formation of Well Ke 85 in the Zhongguai Uplift, northwestern Junggar Basin, Xinjiang. Nineteen miospore species belonging to 14 genera were identified from the assemblage. Based on their relative abundance, one assemblage is nominated informally as Calamospora breviradiata–Lunatisporites tersus (BT) assemblage. SIMS U–Pb geochronological analysis of zircons from two volcanic ash beds from the basal and upper parts of the formation yields weighted mean 206Pb/238U dates of 316.3 ± 2.2 Ma (MSWD = 1.2, n = 19) and 316.5 ± 2.8 Ma (MSWD = 0.85, n = 20) in an ascending order. A Bashkirian age is thus assigned to the BT assemblage. Our combined palynological and geochronological investigations reveal an early stage of the rise of conifers in the Kazakhstan Plate and offer a rare glimpse into the Early Pennsylvanian land vegetation in the subtropical area at the northern hemisphere. The evolution of the western Kunlun‐Pamir region involved the opening and closing of several branches of the Paleo‐Tethys Ocean, although the specific timing of these events is poorly constrained. Here, we present a synthesis of sedimentary, magmatic, and metamorphic records associated from the Mazar‐Kangxiwa suture zone in the western Kunlun‐Pamir that is generally regarded as the main Paleo‐Tethys Ocean suture. These data show that the Paleo‐Tethyan oceanic basin opened at ca. 340 Ma and closed by ca. 250 Ma, and there is no record of a magmatic arc between ca. 300–250 Ma. The absence of a magmatic arc was a result of oceanic crust underthrusting, rather than oceanic subduction, which is consistent with a narrow back‐arc basin. Our study provides an important example of how an oceanic basin opened and closed without oceanic subduction, and highlights a potential mechanism to account for the absence of a magmatic arc. However, there are no magmatic arcs associated with the closure of some oceanic basins in the Paleo‐Tethys realm. In order to understand the detailed history of ocean basins in the Paleo‐Tethys oceans, we carry out an integrated in situ analysis of zircon U‐Pb age and Hf‐O isotopes, along with whole‐rock geochemistry for sedimentary, magmatic, and metamorphic records from the Mazar‐Kangxiwa suture zone in the western Kunlun‐Pamir that is widely regarded as the main Paleo‐Tethys Ocean suture. Our data reveals that there is no record of a magmatic arc associated with Paleo‐Tethys Ocean closure during the Permian (ca. 300–250 Ma). This Paleo‐Tethyan oceanic basin was closed by oceanic crust underthrusting, rather than oceanic subduction. Thus, not all Paleo‐Tethyan oceanic basins were closed by subduction with development of arc magmatism. It is unclear whether the South China blocks have an affinity with continental Gondwana due to a lack of direct Pan‐African magmatic and metamorphic features. In this study, we conducted U‐Pb geochronological and Lu‐Hf isotopic analyses for detrital zircons from a sandstone of the Chang'an Formation of the Nanhua Group in the Longsheng region of northern Guangxi, with the aim of constraining the timing of sedimentation and information as to its source, as well as seeking evidence for Pan‐African events in the South China blocks. The results show that the ages of detrital zircons peaked at 654.7 ± 6.2 Ma, 773.2 ± 4.1 Ma and 821.9 ± 6.5 Ma, with some at 920–870 Ma; the youngest age indicates the existence of the Pan‐African thermal event. The ∊Hf(t) and TDM2 values demonstrate that the study area has experienced three stages of crustal growth at 3.0–2.4 Ga, 2.1–1.5 Ga and 1.3–0.9 Ga. With intensively distributed Neoproterozoic mafic‐ultramafic and granitic plutons emplaced at 830–810 Ma along the southwestern section of the Jiangnan Orogenic Belt and positive ∊Hf(t) values from a large group of zircon grains, it is proposed that the sediments of the Chang'an Formation (of Nanhua Group) were largely sourced from the southeastern margin of the Yangtze block. Comparison with the zircon age spectra of the Cathaysian block shows that about 79% of the Pan‐African aged detrital zircon grains that have TDM2 = 1352–1031 Ma and ∊Hf(t) = 3.68–8.79, were sourced from the recycled Grenvillian crust of the Cathaysian block, suggesting that the Cathaysian block had a close connection with Gondwana. A study of heavy mineral assemblages, rutile compositions, and detrital zircon age populations in Namurian to Westphalian sandstones in North Wales, deposited in the southwestern part of the Pennine Basin of the United Kingdom, has revealed considerable complexity in their provenance history. The Pendleian to Marsdenian Cefn‐y‐fedw Sandstone Formation, which is known to have been derived from the Wales–Brabant Massif (WBM) to the south on the basis of palaeocurrent and petrographic information, has a heavy mineral assemblage characteristic of this southerly provenance, and includes Late Neoproterozoic zircons apparently of local WBM origin. However, the formation is dominated by zircons that were most probably recycled from sandstones of northern origin from the Caledonian Belt that had been previously deposited over the massif during Late Devonian times, and, as such, has a comparable history to the sedimentologically‐equivalent Morridge Formation of the English Midlands. Heavy mineral analysis shows that sandstones in the Brigantian Minera Formation and Yeadonian part of the Bowland Shale Formation are of similar southern provenance. The Yeadonian Gwespyr Sandstone, previously interpreted as having a northern origin, similar to the time‐equivalent Rough Rock, has variations in heavy mineral analysis and zircon spectrum that suggest a complex provenance history and includes sand bodies with northern, western, and southern origins. As a record of oceanic subduction, an accretionary complex plays a key role in the reconstruction of plate tectonic history. The Kekesentao ophiolitic mélange between the Chinese Altai orogen to the north and the Kazakhstan collage to the south played an important role in the subduction–accretion of the Chinese Altai in the Palaeozoic. This article provides new structural field relations, and petrographic, geochemical, and geochronologic data for the Kekesentao ophiolitic mélange, and detrital zircon analyses of turbidites that are imbricated with the mélange. The Kekesentao mélange consists of ultramafic rocks, meta‐gabbros, pillow basalts, cherts, and imbricated trench turbidites, tuffaceous sandstones and quartz schists (ocean plate stratigraphy). The mélange shows a 'block in matrix' structure in the field, and the general imbricated dip of the thrust system is to the N‐NE, indicating southward accretion. Pillow basalts and meta‐gabbros have a typical N‐MORB geochemical signature, and the U–Pb zircon age of a meta‐gabbro, interpreted as the age of pre‐subduction oceanic crust, is Early Devonian (399–393 Ma). The upper time limit of accretion of the mélange is constrained by a Late Devonian (361 Ma) intrusive granitic pluton. Detrital zircon ages of surrounding turbidites range from 369 to 3,114 Ma, which is typical of magmatic 540–460 Ma zircons from the Chinese Altai, suggesting that the Chinese Altai arc was the source of zircons in the mélange. The Kekesentao ophiolite was accreted to the accretionary complex before the Late Devonian. Our analysis of structures, ocean plate stratigraphy, and zircon isotopic provenance of the Kekesentao ophiolitic mélange and turbidites provides a robust conclusion that southward growth of the accretionary complex in the Kekesentao area of the Chinese Altai was semi‐continuous from the Early Palaeozoic to Devonian. The South Altyn Block (SAB), located along the southern margin of the Altyn Tagh in Qaidam Basin, has a significant relationship with the tectonics of the Qaidam Basin basement. This study presents the petrological features, geochemical compositions, and zircon U–Pb and Hf isotope data of four granitic plutons from the eastern segment of the SAB to constrain the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of this region during the Palaeozoic. Basing on previous U–Pb dating results, the zircon U–Pb analysis in this study suggests that Palaeozoic magmatic events can be subdivided into four episodes: Late Cambrian (approximately 502 Ma), Late Ordovician (approximately 444 Ma), Early Devonian, and Middle Permian (approximately 271 Ma). The Palaeozoic granitoids were derived mainly from Neoproterozoic juvenile crustal components, with minor palaeoproterozoic ancient materials. The S‐ and I‐type granitoids in Late Cambrian indicate a compressional tectonic environment with respect to subduction, and A‐type granitoids suggest post‐collision regime. The Late Ordovician granodiorites of A‐type imply typical magmatism within a post‐collision extensional setting. Ascribing to the subduction of Palaeo‐Tethys Ocean during the Devonian, S‐type granites were emplaced in the Early Devonian accompanied with the crust thickening. The Jiangshan gold deposit is the largest, most recently‐discovered gold deposit in the Bengbu Uplift. The ore bodies are located in the structural fracture zone of the Zhuangzili Formation (Ar3), with major Pb‐Zn and Au reserves. In this study, LA‐ICP‐MS zircon U‐Pb analyses yielded a crystallization age of 111.5 ± 1.8 Ma for the quartz diorite porphyry in Jiangshan. The quartz diorite porphyry has high Ba and Sr content, with low Y and Yb content, which is similar to the characteristics of adakitic rocks. They are enriched in large ion lithophile elements (LILEs, e.g., Ba, U) and light rare earth elements (LREEs), while depleted in high field strength elements (HFSEs, e.g., Nb, Ti) and heavy rare earth element (HREEs). They have zircon ∊Hf(t) values of –23.52 to –21.14 (mean = –22.32). and Hf model ages of 2419.76 to 2569.39 Ma. The magma source area is the lower crust. Magma primarily came from the partial melting of the lower crust, with the addition of some mantle material. The quartz diorite porphyries are characterized by high zircon TTi‐in‐zircon values (608–757°C), Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios (71.97–1387.10) and Eu/Eu∗ ratios (0.46–1.08), indicating high temperature and magmatic oxygen fugacities. High temperatures can provide heat to fluids and highly oxidized magmas can control the behavior and speciation of sulfides, thus controlling the behavior of Au. The South China Block (SCB) has been regarded by many as an integral part of Gondwana, but proposed timing and processes for its accretion to Gondwana vary and remain contentious, largely owing to the lack of reliable Pan‐African age paleomagnetic data and tectono‐magmatic records from the SCB. Integrated in situ U‐Pb ages and Hf‐O isotope analyses of detrital zircons from geochronologically well‐calibrated Ediacaran‐Cambrian sedimentary rocks of western SCB reveal age populations of 2.51, 1.85, 1.20, 0.80, and 0.52 Ga. Detrital zircon age spectra indicate a major tectonic transition for the SCB during 0.56–0.54 Ga, interpreted to reflect the beginning of the collision between SCB‐Indochina and NW India blocks. The collisional event lasted until early Ordovician, leading to the suturing of the SCB‐Indochina to the northern margin of East Gondwana. The Sanshilipu monzogranites is located in the northern margin of the South Qinling Block, with an outcrop of about 10 km2, and as an intrusion into Palaeozoic Danfeng ophiolitic mélange. The samples consist mainly of plagioclase, K‐feldspar, quartz, biotite, and minor titanite, apatite, magnetite, with contents of SiO2 (61.73–68.49%), Al2O3 (14.58–16.61%), K2O + Na2O (5.79–8.87%), MgO (1.07–2.91%), and low TiO2 (0.55–0.83%), similar to those of I‐type granite. They also show high concentrations of LREE, Pb, and Sr, slightly negative Eu, but low HREE, Nb, Ta, and Y. High Sr and Sr/Y, low Y characteristics are similar to those of adakite. High precision LA‐ICP‐MS U–Pb dating and trace element analysis of zircon in the Sanshilipu granite yielded a concordant age of 205 ± 1 Ma. This age is apparently younger than the closure age of the Mian‐Lue Ocean (242–221 Ma). We propose that the Sanshilipu monzogranites formed by magma mixing of thickened lower crust and limited mantle‐derived mafic magma during post‐collision of the South China and North China blocks. To detect the exhumation history of the southwestern South China Block (SCB), we performed fission track (FT) analysis on zircon and apatite grains in granitoid and sedimentary samples. From east to west, the study area includes the Yunkai Massif, Lingshan granitic belt, Shiwandashan Basin, and eastern margin of the Youjiang Basin. The granite sample of the Yunkai Massif has two peaks of 75 and 92 Ma for zircon FT dating. The Lingshan granitic belt samples yield zircon FT central ages from 135 to 132 Ma. The Permian bauxite samples of the Youjiang Basin yield zircon FT central ages from 109 to 93 Ma and display age peaks at ~97–93 Ma. The Yunkai Massif granite sample has two peaks at 74 and 104 Ma for apatite FT dating, while the Lingshan granitic belt sample has two peaks at 81 and 111 Ma. The cooling paths of the Yunkai Massif sample started with an Early Cretaceous (~120–100 Ma) cooling event that brought the granitoids into the apatite partial annealing zone (PAZ). Through comparative studies, we suggest that the southwestern SCB underwent three periods of crustal uplift during ~135–132, ~111–92, and ~ 81–74 Ma, respectively, which is consistent with the regional stratigraphic unconformity and crustal extension. Only the Yunkai Massif and Lingshan granitic belt were uplifted during ~135–132 Ma. During ~111–92 Ma, the southwestern SCB experienced crustal uplift, and the basal conglomerate began to deposit in the Shiwandashan Basin. Late Cretaceous uplifted occurred during ~81–74 Ma, and the Yunkai Massif was uplifted throughout the Cretaceous. From 97 to 92 Ma, the Permian bauxite deposits in the Youjiang Basin were uplifted, which provided the basis of the later transformation to Quaternary bauxite. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Structural analysis and new zircon U/Pb geochronology were performed in the Cuonadong Dome in order to test the hypothesis that the top‐to‐North deformation in the North Himalayan Gneiss Domes (NHGD) has been correlated with deformation along the South Tibetan detachment system (STDS). Structural analysis suggests that the X‐axes of sheath folds at the different flanks of the dome are consistent, and show average a trend and plunge of 350° and 18°. Many shear sense indicators are recorded in the ductile shear zone during the top‐to‐north deformation, including the augen structure, σ‐type and δ‐type rotating porphyroclast, S–C fabric and pressure shadow structure. The development of the sheath folds first provide a direct‐field structural evidence that represents a deeper ductile manifestation of the STDS, and further suggests that the top‐to‐north deformation in the NHGD have been correlated with deformation along the STDS. The emplacement of the synkinematic granites at ca. 32 Ma exposed at the core of the sheath folds is also interpreted as the initiation of slip along the STDS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The eastern Hexi Corridor, northwest China, is located at the tectonic junction of the Alxa Block, the North China Craton, and the Qinling‐Qilian Orogen. The early Paleozoic Xiangshan Group record critical information regarding paleoenvironment, paleoclimate and paleotectonic setting, from which we here present a focused study on the chert beds within the Xiangshan Group. Through field mapping, microstructural observation, whole‐rock geochemistry analyses and detrital zircon dating, we suggest that the Xiangshan Group chert was deposited along a passive continental margin, formed primarily through biological activity with minor hydrothermal influence and terrestrial input. The characteristics of the chert support a low latitude sedimentary paleoenvironmental origin, and reveal the fact that the Alxa Block was separated from the North China craton, while emerged some paleogeographic affinity with the Qilian region in the Middle‐Late Cambrian. Analysing the provenance changes of synorogenic sediments in the Turpan‐Hami basin by detrital zircon geochronology is an efficient tool to examine the uplift and erosion history of the easternmost Tian Shan. We present detrital zircon U‐Pb analysis from nine samples that were collected within marginal lacustrine Middle‐Late Jurassic and aeolian‐fluvial Early Cretaceous strata in the basin. Middle‐Early Jurassic (159–172 Ma) zircons deriving from the southern Junggar dominated the Middle Jurassic sample from the western Turpan‐Hami basin, whereas Permian‐Carboniferous (270–330 Ma) zircons from the Bogda mountains were dominant in the Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous samples. Devonian‐Silurian (400–420 Ma) and Triassic (235–259 Ma) zircons from the Jueluotage and Harlik mountains constituted the subordinate age groups in the Late Jurassic and Early Cretaceous samples from the eastern basin respectively. The temporal duration of lunar‐evolved magmatism is still poorly constrained. In lunar meteorite Northwest Africa (NWA) 10049, a melt inclusion‐bearing zircon fragment provides a new tool to understand the composition and age of the melts from which zircon directly crystallized. The studied zircon‐hosted melt inclusions are silica rich and iron poor (e.g., ~80–90 wt% SiO2; <0.5 wt% FeO), compositionally similar with immiscible silica‐rich melts found in Apollo rocks. Nano‐SIMS U–Pb analyses of the zircon yielded a minimum crystallization age of 4,382 ± 40 Ma, older than the ages for Apollo highly evolved alkali suite lithologies (~3.8–4.33 Ga). Our study shows that the melt inclusion‐bearing zircon in NWA 10049 is the oldest microscale evidence for documenting immiscible silica‐rich melts in lunar samples, suggesting that lunar‐evolved silica‐rich melts were prevalent as early as ~4.38 Ga. This work implies that there would be a prolonged silicic magmatism occurred on the Moon. The Denali Fault is an active strike‐slip fault system responsible for the highest topography in North America, yet there are conflicting constraints on the fault's Cenozoic slip history. The long‐term slip rate constraint of the eastern Denali Fault is ~400 km since 57 Ma. In apparent conflict, the long‐term slip rate of the western Denali Fault is 38 km since 38 Ma based on the reconstruction of the Foraker and McGonagall plutons. Tests of the genetic relationship of the plutons with bulk rock geochemical and paired U‐Pb and Hf zircon analysis suggest a disparate origin. The McGonagall pluton, despite having a lower SiO2, has lower εHf values inconsistent with chemical and isotopic variations between the two being the result of contamination. The Denali Fault is a highly strain partitioned system, but the amount of Cenozoic slip dispersed east to west is likely significantly less than the previous ~360 km constraint. As an important part of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB), Chinese western Tianshan contains voluminous Late Palaeozoic volcanic rocks. Here, we present geochronological, geochemical, and in situ Lu–Hf isotopic data from the Atengtao sanukitic high‐Mg andesites (HMAs) of the western Yili Block. LA‐ICP‐MS zircon U–Pb analyses indicate that the Atengtao high‐Mg andesites were generated in the Early Carboniferous (346 ± 2 Ma). All the studied rock samples are characterized by high MgO (3.30–5.45 wt.%), SiO2 (53.25–60.10 wt.%), Cr (90.3–157 ppm), and Ni (31.0–46.7 ppm) contents, with geochemical characteristics analogous to those of sanukitoids of the Setouchi Volcanic Belt (SVB), SW Japan, and Bieluagaxi area, West Junggar. The Atengtao sanukitic HMAs are enriched in LILE and LREE but depleted in HFSE, similar to those of typical arc‐related magmatic rocks. They are also characterized by high Nb (11.4–15.8 ppm) concentrations, high Th/La (0.3) and Th/Yb (2.6–4.0) ratios, and varying zircon εHf(t) values (−2.3 to +4.3). These features are suggested to result from the partial melting of a relatively enriched mantle wedge metasomatized by subducting oceanic slab‐derived sediments. Considering the occurrence of sanukitic HMAs, combined with the contemporaneous special rock assemblages (such as slab‐derived adakite, Nb‐enrich basalt, A‐type granite/rhyolite, and bimodal volcanic rocks) found in the western part of Yili Block, we propose that the generation of the Carboniferous sanukitic HMAs in Atengtao Mountain were most likely related to the slab break‐off following the southern Tianshan Ocean slab northward subduction beneath the Yili–Central Tianshan Block. This mechanism not only produces intense magmatism with compositional diversity but also gives rise to a local extension in the western part of Yili Block. The fundamental approach for the confirmation of any terrestrial meteorite impact structure is the identification of diagnostic shock metamorphic features, together with the physical and chemical characterization of impactites and target lithologies. However, for many of the approximately 200 confirmed impact structures known on Earth to date, multiple scale‐independent tell‐tale impact signatures have not been recorded. Especially some of the pre‐Paleozoic impact structures reported so far have yielded limited shock diagnostic evidence. The rocks of the Dhala structure in India, a deeply eroded Paleoproterozoic impact structure, exhibit a range of diagnostic shock features, and there is even evidence for traces of the impactor. This study provides a detailed look at shocked samples from the Dhala structure, and the shock metamorphic evidence recorded within them. It also includes a first report of shatter cones that form in the shock pressure range from ~2 to 30 GPa, data on feather features (FFs), crystallographic indexing of planar deformation features, first‐ever electron backscatter diffraction data for ballen quartz, and further analysis of shocked zircon. The discovery of FFs in quartz from a sample of the MCB‐10 drill core (497.50 m depth) provides a comparatively lower estimate of shock pressure (~7–10 GPa), whereas melting of a basement granitoid infers at least 50–60 GPa shock pressure. Thus, the Dhala impactites register a strongly heterogeneous shock pressure distribution between <2 and >60 GPa. The present comprehensive review of impact effects should lay to rest the nonimpact genesis of the Dhala structure proposed by some earlier workers from India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Baleigong granites, located in the western part of the southwestern Tianshan Orogen (Kokshanyan region, China), records late Paleozoic magmatism during the late stages of convergence between the Tarim Block and the Central Tianshan Arc Terrane. We performed a detailed geochronological and geochemical study of the Baleigong granites to better constrain the nature of collisional processes in the Southwest Tianshan Orogen. The LA‐ICP‐MS U‐Pb zircon isotopic analyses indicate that magmatism commenced in the early Permian (∼282 Ma). The granite samples, which are characterized by high contents of SiO2 (67.68–69.77 wt%) and Al2O3 (13.93–14.76 wt%), are alkali‐rich and Mg‐poor, corresponding to the high‐K calc‐alkaline series. The aluminum saturation index (A/CNK) ranges from 0.93 to 1.02, indicating a metaluminous to slightly peraluminous composition. Trace element geochemistry shows depletions in Nb, Ta, and Ti, a moderately negative Eu anomaly (δEu=0.40–0.56), enrichment in LREE, and depletion in HREE ((La/Yb)N=7.46–11.78). These geochemical signatures are characteristic of an I‐type granite generated from partial melting of a magmatic arc. The I‐type nature of the Baleigong granites is also supported by the main mafic minerals being Fe‐rich calcic hornblende and biotite. We suggest that the high‐K, calc‐alkaline I‐type granitic magmatism was generated by partial melting of the continental crust, possibly triggered by underplating by basaltic magma. These conditions were likely achieved in a collisional tectonic setting, thus supporting the suggestion that closure of the South Tianshan Ocean was completed prior to the Permian and was followed (in the late Paleozoic) by collision between the Tarim Block and the Central Tianshan Arc Terrane. The Salem Mafic–Ultramafic Complex occurs within the northern part of Cauvery Suture Zone (CSZ), Southern Granulite Terrane (SGT), India. The complex occurs as semicircular to elongated linear body with a thick mantle section and comparatively well‐developed crustal section comprising different lithological units, also referred to as the Chalk Hills of Salem. The major rock types in the complex comprise ultramafic cumulates of dunite, peridotite, wherlite, pyroxenite, and hornblendite, mafic and felsic intrusions of gabbros and amphibolites, and quartzo–feldspathic alkaline rocks together with several ultrapotassic dykes. Geochemical studies of amphibolites from this complex indicate tholeiitic parent magma with enrichment of LIL elements (Rb, Ba, Th, and Sr) and are relatively more enriched than N‐MORB as compared with arc‐related rocks. The enrichment of LIL elements over the HFS elements and with distinct Nb, Ta, and Ti depletion relative to other HFS elements suggest the involvement of subduction‐related components in the depleted mantle source and that the magmatism occurred in an oceanic convergent realm. The mineral chemistry of dunite and peridotite shows high content of forsterite (86.9–92.2) in olivine and high Cr# value (80.85–98.73) for spinel. The tectonic discrimination plots of spinel and olivine mineral chemistry together with clinopyroxene chemistry of amphibolites reveal arc signature typical of Alaskan type of complex. The U–Pb zircon analysis of quartz monzonite intrusion within the hornblendite from the complex yielded a weighted mean age of 819 ± 2.4 Ma, suggesting that the complex formed during the Neoproterozoic and can be correlated to the Alaskan‐type complexes described from the Arabian–Nubian Shield. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma‐mass spectrometry (LA‐ICP‐MS) U–Pb geochronology of shocked zircon grains in a vesicular‐fluidal impact melt rock from the ≥54 km Charlevoix impact structure, Québec, Canada, suggests an Ordovician to Silurian age of 450 ± 20 Ma for the impact. This age is anchored by concordant U–Pb results of ~450 Ma for a U‐rich, cryptocrystalline zircon grain in the melt rock, interpreted as a recrystallized metamict zircon crystal; the U–Th–Pb system of the metamict grain was seemingly chronometrically reset by the Charlevoix impact, but withstood later tectonometamorphic events. The new zircon age for Charlevoix is in agreement with a stratigraphically constrained Late Ordovician maximum age of ~453 Ma and corroborates earlier suggestions that the impact occurred most likely in the Ordovician, and not ~100 Myr later, as indicated by previous K/Ar and 40Ar/39Ar geochronologic results. The latter may reflect postimpact thermal overprint of impactites during the Salinian (Late Silurian to Early Devonian) and/or Acadian (Late Devonian) orogenies. U–Pb geochronology of zircon crystals in anorthosite exposed in the central uplift of the impact structure yielded a Grenvillian crystallization age of 1062 ± 11 Ma. The preferred Ordovician age for the Charlevoix impact structure, which is partially overthrusted by the Appalachian front, suggests the impact occurred during a phase of Taconian tectonism and an episode of enhanced asteroid bombardment of the Earth. Our results, moreover, demonstrate that (recrystallized) metamict zircon grains may be of particular interest in impact geochronology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
